The gorgeous and dramatic stretch of the Amalfi Coast is like no other place in Italy, or indeed the world. Best explored over several days to truly soak up the area’s ambience, sample a smattering of local dishes, and enjoy several gorgeous sunsets, here’s your ultimate Amalfi Coast Itinerary .
I have created a one-day in the Amalfi Coast suggested itinerary (see below), but if you’re staying longer, there are suggestions for 5 days or 7 days on the Costiera Amalfitana .
The first five days will concentrate solely on the Amalfi Coast, while day six and seven will be spent at nearby attractions and destinations. If you don’t have a full week available, then you can follow just the first five days of this itinerary.
Where is the Amalfi Coast?
What if you only have one day on the amalfi coast, day 1 on the amalfi coast suggested itinerary: positano and the path of the gods , day 2 on the amalfi coast suggested itinerary: furore, praiano & san michele , day 3 on the amalfi coast suggested itinerary: amalfi, atrani, ravello & pontone , day 4 on the amalfi coast suggested itinerary: minori, maiori, vietri sul mare & cetara, day 5 on the amalfi coast suggested itinerary: capri or boat ride & dinner in sorrento, day 6 on the amalfi coast suggested itinerary: pompeii and herculaneum, day 7 on the amalfi coast suggested itinerary: naples.
The Amalfi Coast is in Southern Italy, just south of the city of Naples (the 4th largest metropolitan area in Italy). Located in the Province of Salerno (which is one of the largest towns on the stretch of coastline), Amalfi is a particular length of coastline of the Salerno Gulf on the Tyrrhenian Sea.
The Amalfi Coast draws millions of visitors every year thanks to its dramatic coastal towns, stunning turquoise blue waters, and winding narrow streets. Please note that the name Amalfi is not only used to designate the stretch of coastline but is also the name of one of the most prominent towns on the coastal stretch.
If you only have one day to spend on the Amalfi Coast then I recommend focusing on the major sites that the area has to offer: Amalfi, Ravello, and Positano. I would personally start by heading to Ravello, where hilltop villas overlook the mountainous sea cliffs that the region is so famous for.
Then, you’ll want to head on to Amalfi where the glitzy glamour of the town soon becomes apparent. Some of the must-see things to do in town include a visit to the Paper Museum , sipping on limoncello at the Amalfi Lemon Experience and wandering through the Cloisters of Paradise .
If you would prefer for all of the transport details to be taken care of for you, then I would opt for a boat cruise (cruises depart from Salento regularly, but typically a full-day one begins first thing in the morning).
Amalfi Coast suggested itinerary
For this itinerary, you’ll want to have access to your own vehicle. I recommend renting the smallest car possible (which is typically a Fiat 500) so that you can complete this suggested driving route at your leisure.
Start your travels by visiting undoubtedly the most famous town on the Amalfi Coast, Positano. Nestled between an enclave of mountainous hills, the town is famed for its splash of colourful pastel-hued houses that are dreamily painted across the jagged coastline.
Positano is abundant with things to do , however, the town itself is quite small so can easily be seen in a day, still leaving time for you to explore the Path of Gods hiking trail and soak up breathtaking views.
Begin your day by simply wandering around and getting lost in Positano’s winding maze of narrow streets, from here you are likely to come across a cosy cafĂ© where you can start by indulging in a traditional Italian breakfast .
After breakfast head to see the little miniature village models (generally small shrines to honour the Virgin Mary), which can be found scattered across the towns of the Amalfi Coastline and are often tucked away in a roadside.
Then, head to the beach! Of course, one of the greatest joys of visiting coastal towns is their abundance of beautiful beaches. Spiaggia Grande is the main beach of Positano, but there are four beaches in total to choose from. Generally, Arienzo Beach Club is the quietest as it’s only reachable by boat or a steep set of stairs.
Enjoy a seaside lunch, thanks to the obvious proximity to the sea, here is where you’ll find some of the finest and freshest seafood you can imagine! Although, it’s worth noting that if you wish to have a sit-down meal in the town be sure to book in advance, particularly during the peak season.
Spend the afternoon doing one of the most popular activities in the town, shopping. Positano is particularly well-known for its clothing boutiques, handmade sandals, and colourful ceramics which feature local motifs such as lemons and olives.
Once the temperatures have cooled a little in the late afternoon, take yourself on the Amalfi Coast’s most popular hiking route and marvel at stunning views that are sure to take your breath away! The Path of Gods is considered to be a moderately challenging route so wear comfy shoes and bring lots of water.
End your day with a limoncello spritz, a sunset view and a delicious dinner! Many people say that the best time to see Positano is after dark when the pastel houses are illuminated and moonlight is reflected across the water…and to be honest, I couldn’t agree more.
Travel to a âtown that doesnât existâ thanks to the fjord-like gorge that sits bang in the middle of it. As there’s no main square, or town for that matter, your visit to Furore will be centred around visiting the natural landscape and beach.
Furore is famed for its impressive huge stone arch that connects over a magnificent sparkling gorge. Spend the morning here hiking, exploring the hidden coves and taking a dip in the warming waters of the Mediterranean Sea on the hidden pebble beach below the arch.
Next, head to another quiet town which is perched high above on the cliffs, Praiano. Find somewhere to grab lunch, Ristorante Il Pino offers spectacular views overlooking the azure sea, or you could head to a shop and pick up some local delights to enjoy on the main beach Marina di Praia tucked between two looming cliff faces.
Spend a little time exploring Praiano, the village is pretty small so you’ll only need 2-3 hours depending on how long you choose to sit and soak up the leisurely pace of life here. A particular highlight not to be missed when visiting is the beautiful Church of St. Gennaro, which stands as the only building of baroque architecture along the Amalfi Coast.
Head over to the neighbouring town, San Michele ******
What you may not know is that the Amalfi Coast takes its name from the jewel town, Amalfi itself. According to legends, the Roman god Hercules fell in love with a nymph called Amalfi. When she died, Hercules wanted to bury her in the most beautiful place on earth and thus decided on this town.
First, stop for coffee and a sweet pastry and enjoy breakfast like a local! Then, start exploring Amalfi town by visiting some of its most unique sights. You’ll likely need to set aside 2-3 hours to see the town, possibly more time if you want to relax on the beach as well.
See centuries-old machinery at work for yourself at The Paper Museum, then learn and taste sun-kissed lemons at the Amalfi Lemon Experience. Also not to be missed is the small pocket of peace, The Cloister of Paradise, which is set within the town’s Duomo and was built between 1266 and 1268.
On the street, Ruga Nova Mercatorum , youâll find shops selling treasures such as traditional homemade ceramics , which make for the perfect souvenir to bring home and remember your trip!
Next, take a short ten-minute walk through a not-so-obvious pedestrian tunnel (as if walking through a secret passageway) and youâll find the charming fishing village, Atrani. This tiny village is attached to that of Amalfi, so many people often think of it as the same place.
Here you can spend some time relaxing on the beach, which is often quieter than that of the bustling Amalfi Town and grab a bite to eat at one of the restaurants by the waterfront. Le Palme serves mouthwatering Italian pizza and offers vegan options.
After filling up with delicious Italian food, you can either hike to the next town or drive (the hike from Amalfi to Ravello takes approximately 50 minutes one-way).
Walking along paths rich with history which boast spectacular views is truly an enchanting way to reach the beautiful town of Ravello . However, the route can be quite challenging, with quite a few steep inclines at points, so be sure to wear comfortable shoes.
Once in Ravello, you will be able to explore treasures such as the immaculate gardens of a historic villa which dates back to the 11th century and is a beautiful example of Italianate architecture. Here, you will also find the Terrace of Infinity, which is as romantic as the name suggests, offering views overlooking the picture-perfect town and beyond.
Ravello is full of charm and ideally, you’ll want to set aside 3-4 hours for your visit. Particularly if you happen to be visiting during July and August as the town comes to live with a two-month-long festival celebrating all things music!
End your day in the hilltop village of Pontone, the oldest settlement of the Amalfi Coast. Thanks to its position atop the hillside of Mount Pontone, the village boasts stunning views as well as being an idyllic spot for (even more) hiking in the surrounding nature trails!
The village can be reached by foot from Amalfi if you are willing to climb the steep ascent of 750 steps (which may be a lot considering the amount of hiking already). The picturesque medieval village is the prime spot to watch the sunset, and there are a few local restaurants where you can have dinner.
Begin another delightful day on the Amalfi Coast in the charming town of Minori. This small town is a little lesser known so start the day off wandering the narrow maze of streets and soaking up the tranquility of the town as you sip on morning coffee.
One of the must-see sights in the quaint town is the lemon-coloured cathedral, Basilica of Saint Trofimena which is dedicated to the female saint, Trofimena. Then, book yourself on a âLemon Tourâ and immerse yourself in the old rural life, learning all about the cultivation and importance of lemons to the coastline heritage.
You can walk from Minori to Maiori via the Path of Lemons, which is one of the most evocative trails that takes you through an abundance of lemon groves (the walk takes 1.5 hours and is moderately challenging).
In Maiori stop for lunch and soak up the views, then head to the beach, which is the biggest stretch of beach in the whole of the Amalfi Coast! A historic Norman Tower looms over the beach. Here you can relax, go for a dip and explore Grotta del Pandora , which are hidden coves only reachable by sea.
Spend the afternoon in the ‘Ceramic Capital of the Coastâ , Vietri sul Mare . You’ll want to set aside at least 2-3 hours minimum to fully experience the charm of this town. And, the best way to experience Vietri sul Mare is to simply wander around and get lost down the narrow winding streets.
A highlight, of course, is a visit to the Vietri Ceramics Museum which is dedicated to the heritage and history of all things ceramic. And, if time allows, this town is one of the best places to get your hands deep in some clay and make your very own ceramics!
Before leaving the ceramic haven, shop for a souvenir or two and head to the viewpoint of the town where you can take in panoramic views of Vietri sul Mare before heading over to the final stop of the day.
End your day in the delightful fishing town of Cetara , which is most famous for its seafood and is known as the ‘World Tuna Capital’ . Of course no trip to Cetara would be complete without a visit to a tuna shop, where you can taste the delights and learn more about the importance of the town’s maritime heritage.
Full of character and charm, thereâs only one main street that runs along the town, where youâll find an abundance of vibrant and colourful restaurants, shops and cosy cafes and here you will also see the beautiful Saint Peterâs Church.
You can also visit the 16th-century defensive tower which houses a small museum dedicated to the fishing roots of Cetara as well as Anchovy Colatura (where you can see the ancient barrels in which the amber liquid was once stored) .
Find a restaurant to have dinner in by Cetara’s beautiful port area and enjoy dinner by the sea eating some of the freshest Italian cuisine!
Opt to take a boat ride and spend the day visiting the beautiful island of Capri! Simply hop on a ferry from Sorrento to Capri. The island is famed for its fascinating rock formations, stretches of dramatic coastlines and crystal clear waters, its natural beauty alone is enough reason to visit!
Aside from its breathtaking natural beauty, the island is scattered with churches, museums, delicious cuisine and world-class shopping. Start here by watching the world go by at the main Piazzetta and grab a coffee and pastry to fuel up for a day of exploring.
Next, head to the luscious green oasis, the Garden of Augustus , which is a terraced garden sprinkled with statues, overlooking breathtaking views. Then hike up the steep trail to see (and photograph) the iconic view overlooking Via Krupp .
Another popular attraction to visit while in Capri is the Blue Grotto, a sea cave which illuminates blue when the sun shines through. Spend a long and lazy afternoon at one of the many beaches, boasting sparkling blue waters that are dreamy to take a dip in.
Once you’ve got your fill of sunshine and swimming, go back into town and find a spot to have lunch before heading to the main shopping street, Via Camerelle . This elegant street might just be for window shopping as it’s quite a high end strip, but well worth a visit!
Take the ferry back to Sorrento , you’ll want to get there a little before dinner time so that you have enough time to explore the town. Sunny Sorrento is filled with treasures and is best known for its abundance of sun-kissed citrus fruits , namely lemons.
Wander around Sorrento’s historic old town which is known as Centro Storico , and find somewhere to enjoy a refreshing pre-dinner drink, I recommend a limoncello spritz!
Then you can head down to the Marina Grande and soak up views of the pastel-hued houses at the waterfront, before going down the narrow cobbled lanes to the main square Piazza Tasso and stopping at one of the many terraced cafés for a delicious and hearty Italian dinner.
For even more Sorrento inspiration, check out our guide on how to spend one day in Sorrento .
Coming to the end of your trip, spend your penultimate day stepping in time and exploring some of Italy’s most important archaeological sites. Both ancient Roman cities are easily reached via public transport and the best place to take the train from is Sorrento.
It has to be said that the sheer size of Pompeii alone can seem vast and overwhelming, so you could either spend a whole day there or prioritise the main things to see before you visit. Herculaneum is much less visited and only a fraction of the site has been excavated so far, so there is much less to see, but it’s still worth the trip if you have time.
We’ve put together a guide on how to visit Pompeii and Herculaneum , including advice on the best way to get there as well as options for self-guided and guided tours to take.
If you have a final day to spend in the south of Italy, then I highly recommend taking the time to visit the wonderful and vibrant city of Naples . A gritty city with a lot of character and heaps of charm, Napoli (as it’s known in Italian) is one destination that youâll remember for years to come.
Filled with an array of historic monuments, churches, museums and galleries, Naples is brimming with cultural delights. A trip to this charming Italian city would be remiss without sampling the famed Neapolitan pizza ! Naples is indeed the birthplace and origin of one of the world’s most popular and comforting foods.
One day is sufficient time to see Naples, although it has to be said that it will be quite a packed day as there’s a lot to see and enjoy. Luckily we’ve already made a one-day in Naples itinerary youâll want to steal , to make your travels that bit easier and get the most out of your trip.

There’s no lack of beauty and culture in Italy, so when I say that this is one of the most impressive places I’ve ever been in the country, it’s saying a lot.
Starting off early in the morning, you’ll have all day to enjoy 3 of the hottest tourist destinations in the area. If that sounds like fun to you, I highly recommend signing up for the Private Amalfi Coast Deluxe Ful-Day Trip from Naples Tour before it sells out.
Your trip starts out with your guide picking you up from your hotel, so you don’t have to worry about booking and paying for your own transportation anywhere.
Just sit back, relax, and enjoy the scenery from outside the window as your guide tells you and your party interesting tales about the area.
This vehicle was one of the best I’ve traveled in anywhere in Europe, complete with a non-alcoholic mini bar so you can stay comfortable and hydrated as you travel from one location to the next.
The first stop of the day is Sorrento, known for its charming cobblestone streets, elegant architecture, and friendly locals. Oh, they also have incredible food and coffee, so if you’re into that make sure to try a freshly-made espresso.
Have some free time to explore Sorrento as you best see fit, or you can choose to go on a historical tour with your guide – whatever you prefer.
Then, head on over to the pastel-colored cliffside town of Positano, where you’ll go on another tour through this slice of heaven stacked like a painter’s palette.
While the postcard-perfect views are certainly magnificent, make sure to enjoy the laidback sophistication on every corner and the delicious seafood.
Ravello is a fantastic respite from the hustle and bustle of more “famous” coastal destinations, where you’ll really be able to appreciate the Italian culture, with art, music, villas, and more.

The truth is that there are a ton of people who’d like to visit the Amalfi Coast while in Naples, but they don’t know how to go about it. After all, Naples has some insane traffic and the roads to the coast are winding and intense at times.
How about have an expert lead the way and take care of everything on the Amalfi Coast Day Trip from Naples: Positano, Amalfi, and Ravello Tour .
This tour has also been one of the most educational for me, with our guide teaching us so much about everything we saw in each of the 3 spots.
After all, if you’re going to explore the Amalfi Coast, you can’t just dip your toe in the water – you have to go all-in! What better way than with a day tour that will actually show you these 3 iconic places the way they deserve?
The gorgeous hilltop retreat of Ravello is the first of the bunch, where you’ll be able to wander among the beautiful gardens of Villa Cimbrone and Villa Rufolo.
The views here were simply breathtaking, which makes a lot of sense as to why it’s known to be a haven for artists who come from all around the globe. Next is Positano, which is known for its dramatic cliffs, sun-kissed beaches, and famous pastel-painted buildings.
I loved the balance of laidback lifestyle combined with a sophistication that I didn’t see in many of the bigger “fashion-focused” cities. Here, you can snag some of the most chic Moda Positano clothes and jewelry, enjoy fresh seafood, and wander around the charming streets.
The grand finale of Amalfi awaits, where you’ll see everything from beaches to a magnificent cathedral while enjoying a handmade Italian ice cream or coffee.
4. Amalfi Coast Full-Day Trip From Naples

If you’d like to see the Amalfi Coast the right way, while still sticking to your budget, this is the one for you. I can’t believe how budget-friendly the tour was, especially when you consider the quality that these guides offer.
The Amalfi Coast Full-Day Trip from Naples Tour is perfect if it’s your first time in Italy and want to experience this magical place with professional local guides. I don’t know about you, but I sometimes get bored if a tour only consists of the guide taking us around on a specific itinerary.
Sometimes I’d like to go out on my own and explore each location after learning about it, which is what you’ll get the opportunity to do with this experience.
It balances guided tours along with free time very well, allowing you to ask your guide questions or recommendations if you’d like them.
Our driver-slash-guide was absolutely incredible on the winding coastal roads, which put me at ease in what would’ve been an otherwise very stressful situation.
The small bus was very comfortable, and you’ll get to enjoy plenty of amazing views of the beach, explore the cafe-lined streets, and take time shopping for souvenirs.
The boat transfer (available during the summer only) only elevated the tour experience further, followed up by a delicious lunch consisting of gourmet sandwiches.
I enjoyed exploring the towns on our own after learning about each one, seeing the famous Sant’Andrea Cathedral, the 13th-century Villa Rufolo with pristine gardens that look like from another time, among many other sites.
Whether you’re just a casual traveler or a history buff who wants to soak up as much knowledge as possible, I know you’re going to love this one.

Towns You Will See on the Amalfi Coast
Italy is just a small fraction of the size of the United States, but it’s impressive how much culture and beauty can fit into just the Amalfi Coast, alone. Let’s go over the sites you can expect to see on your Amalfi Coast tour!
1. Positano – This westernmost town is known as being a fishing village with plenty of charm. It’s also known for its trendy fashion, being a celebrity destination, and is no stranger to yacht parties. The pastel-colored villas are beautiful, and we’ve never seen anything quite like it. The 13th-century Santa Maria Assunta church is of particular draw, with its dome sporting majolica tiles and the Byzantine Black Madonna.
2. Amalfi – Couldn’t have guessed this one, huh? Amalfi is so rich in flavor, culture, art, and natural beauty. We hope you enjoy the smell of flowers, because they seem to be cascading everywhere, with the blue sea in the background. The Duomo di Sant’Andrea sits overlooking it all, with a very similar dom to that of the Santa Maria Assunta. Learn all about its centuries-old paper-making traditions as well as Limoncello!
3. Ravello – Ravello feels like you’ve been transported back in time, with its lush gardens surrounding very old, traditional Roman architecture. Churches, monasteries, villas, palaces – it’s packed with 12th-and-13th-century icons.
4. Salerno – Now we’re at the eastern end of the peninsula, which was once the seat of the Fascists during WWII. While the inevitable bombing and invasion left much of it in ruins, you can still see the Castello di Arechi up on a hill, as well as some Roman aqueduct sections, and a beautiful cathedral.

Travel Tips for Taking an Amalfi Coast Boat Tour
- Choose the Perfect Time: The Amalfi Coast tends to be less crowded during the shoulder seasons (April to June and September to October). The weather is still warm, and you’ll avoid the summer rush.
- Dress Appropriately: Be ready to get a tad wet! Bring along a windbreaker or light jacket to protect yourself from the spray, and don’t forget your swimsuit if you plan on swimming.
- Bring Sun Protection: The Mediterranean sun is very strong. Hats, sunglasses, and a good sunscreen are must-haves.
- Stay Hydrated: Itâs easy to forget about hydration when the limoncello is flowing, but no one wants to end up with heat exhaustion. Bring along bottled water to keep dehydration at bay.
- Donât Forget Your Camera: The views are breathtaking and you’ll want to capture them, but just make sure you have a dry bag to put it in when not in use.
- Check Weather Forecasts: Sea conditions can change rapidly, so it’s always a good idea to check the weather before your tour. If it’s not looking like ideal weather, you can always contact your operator about rescheduling.
- Consider a Private Tour: If you are traveling in a group or want a more personalized experience, consider booking a private boat tour. It’ll be more expensive, but it can be quite romantic if you’re traveling with your partner or way more fun in my opinion if you have a big group of your friends going.
- Respect the Sea: Remember, youâre a guest in a natural environment. Always follow the instructions of your guide, keep the sea clean, and respect marine life. No trash should end up off the boat!

FAQ: Amalfi Coast Boat Tours
In this section, I’ll be providing some helpful information for your boat excursion around the Amalfi Coast including the average cost of a boat tour, how long the tours are, and even if you’re allowed to rent your own boat for the day!
Are Amalfi Boat Tours Worth It?
A boat tour of the Amalfi Coast is undoubtedly worth it. It offers a distinctive perspective of the region’s stunning beauty from its dramatic cliffs and sparkling turquoise waters to its picturesque coastal towns.
Apart from the impressive sights, many tours also include opportunities to swim or snorkel in the clear Mediterranean waters, explore captivating sea caves, or even stop at popular sites like the island of Capri.
A boat tour is a fantastic way to experience the best of what the Amalfi Coast has to offer, delivering a memorable adventure that’s well worth the investment.
What is the Best Boat Tour for the Amalfi Coast?
The Amalfi Coast Small Group Boat Tour From Sorrento is widely regarded as one the best boat tours for experiencing the Amalfi Coast’s most iconic sights. This full-day excursion takes you on a scenic voyage along the coast with stunning views of renowned destinations like Positano, Bagni Regina Giovanna, Baia di Ieranto, Li Galli, and Amalfi.
It also includes some light snacks, beverages, and all snorkeling equipment should you choose to take a jump in the gorgeous blue water! This tour has earned Viator’s Badge of Excellence thanks to the amazing company that runs it and it’s consistent 5-star reviews from travelers around the world.
How Much is a Boat Tour on the Amalfi Coast?
The cost of a boat tour on the Amalfi Coast can vary significantly depending on a variety of factors including the duration, the time of year, if food or beverages are included, and whether it’s a private or group tour. On average, you can expect to pay anywhere from $100 to $500 per person.
I’m not going to lie to you… some luxury private tours can even exceed this range! There’s no doubting that Amalfi boat tours will cost you a pretty penny, but you can make it more affordable by choosing a group tour with fewer inclusions.
It’s also worth noting that if you do choose a tour with more inclusions, sure… it’s going to cost more, but these complimentary refreshments, snorkeling gear, or expert skipper may be the difference in your overall experience and could end up making the cost more worthwhile.
How Long is a Boat Ride to Capri from Amalfi?
The boat ride length from Amalfi to Capri can vary depending on the type of boat and the weather, but on average, it typically takes around 1 to 1.5 hours (though you will likely see estimates of between 1-3 hours).
This can stretch to 2 hours or more if the tour includes sightseeing stops along the way or the sea is rough. Therefore, it’s always a good idea to check the specific details with the tour operator when you book and follow up with them the day prior to departure.
Is it Better to See the Amalfi Coast by Car or Boat?
Seeing the Amalfi Coast by boat presents a uniquely breathtaking perspective that a car journey simply cannot offer. The undulating coastline reveals hidden coves, secluded beaches, and dramatic cliff faces only visible from the water.
Of course, you can’t spend your entire visit on a boat, but I would certainly say it’s a “piece of the puzzle” so to speak, that shouldn’t be overlooked.
A car journey also allows for spontaneous stops at charming coastal towns, local eateries, and panoramic viewpoints, providing a more intimate feel of the region’s culture and lifestyle. They allow you to be entirely on your own time and provide the flexibility that you miss on a group tour.
Ultimately, both options deliver distinct and worthwhile experiences, but do your best to get out on the water even if it’s only for an hour or two!
How Much Does a Private Boat Tour to Capri Cost?
The cost of a private boat tour to Capri can vary greatly depending on factors, but on average, a private boat tour to Capri may cost between $500 to over $1000 per group.
Luxury tours featuring larger boats, gourmet meals, or limoncello, can cost significantly more (think $2,000-$3,000 USD).
Can I Rent My Own Boat and Drive it Around the Amalfi Coast?
Yes, renting your own boat is an option for exploring the Amalfi Coast. Numerous rental agencies along the coast offer a range of boats for hire, from small motorboats to luxury yachts. No special license is required for small boats, making it an accessible choice for many visitors.
It’s an exciting way to set your own pace, explore less crowded areas, and have a personalized adventure. However, it’s imperative to keep in mind that you’ll – quite literally – be navigating unchartered waters on your own, so you’ll want to have experience with driving boats on the ocean, in narrow, busy areas with numerous other boaters and swimmers around, all while being aware of the local maritime rules to ensure everyone’s safety on the water.
Keep in mind that boat availability can be limited during peak tourist season, so booking in advance is advisable.
Pssst… if you want to enjoy Capri or Positano by consistently sipping on local beers and limoncello while baking in the hot sun all day, please join a tour and pay a skipper – don’t try to drive yourself! You’ll remove your liability and no one will have to worry about who the designated driver is going to be – everyone in your group can let loose and have fun! Sure, it’s more expensive, but it will keep everyone safe and if you split the cost between everyone in your group it can actually be quite reasonable.

Sean Finelli Last Updated: November 20, 2022
The Amalfi Coast is an amazing destination that warrants up to seven days of your vacation. That said, it’s in our nature to want to see it all! I went down to the Amalfi Coast and spent 48 action-packed hours filled with adventure, beautiful views, delicious cuisine, and unforgettable tours. Here’s how to make the most of two days on the Amalfi Coast.
Pro Tip: Itâs easier to organize your trip when you have all your resources in one place. Bookmark this post along with our guide to the Amalfi Coast for more planning resources, our best Amalfi Coast tours for a memorable trip, and the top things to do on the Amalfi Coast .
How To Spend 48 Hours on the AmalfI Coast
If you only have 48 hours on the Amalfi Coast, you may be wondering how best to spend your time. It’s one of the most beautiful parts of Italy, so you’re going to want to make the most of the time you have here.
We went to the Amalfi Coast for two days and you may be surprised by just how much you can do! Here’s an itinerary for how to spend 48 hours on the Amalfi Coast.

Amalfi Coast Itinerary: Day One
5 amâstart in rome.
We started our adventure in Rome. If you’re coming from Europe and flying into Italy, I recommend flying to Naples International Airport (NAP). If you’re coming from an international destination and staying in Italy for a longer period of time, it will likely make more sense to fly into Rome (FCO).
My mantra is to sleep less and do more, so we got up at 5 am and were on a train to Naples by 6 am. The major train company in Italy is Trenitalia, but Italotreno is normally less expensive and has good departure times. We took an Italo train, which cost about âŹ30 per person and the journey was about an hour
We were at the rental car agency by 7:15 am at Napoli Centrale train station. I recommend renting a car unless you’re a terrible driver. There are almost no rules in Naples, which makes driving both easy and difficult at the same time.
One thing to consider is that the Amalfi Coast road is very narrow with a lot of curves. Prepare to concentrate as you drive and definitely pick up the body damage insurance just in case. I wouldn’t normally purchase insurance for a rental, but you always pick up a few scratches on the coast somehow.
9 amâBagni della Regina Giovanna near Sorrento
We wanted to catch the 6 am train so we could jump in the Bagni della Regina Giovanna before our boat trip to Capri, which departed from the port of Sorrento at 10:30 am.
The Bagni is a fantastic spot with gorgeous views and ruins of a Roman villa. People go there to enjoy its secluded beach and it’s a very popular spot for swimming.
We arrived at the Bagni at around 9 am and parked the car. Keep in mind, there are no defined parking spots. We took some liberties here and luckily we didn’t get a ticket. We were only going to be there for 30 minutes and figured a ticket would be about âŹ30, which is only âŹ10 more than the parking garage a mile away.
The walk to the Bagni from where we parked was about a kilometer (0.7 miles) and it was quite nice. We passed beautiful olive groves and we had an amazing view of the coast. I’d seen pictures of the area before but I was still shocked by how amazing it was.
I got to jump off the cliff as I’d hoped and it was an exhilarating replacement for my first espresso! Next, on to the port of Sorrento.
10:30 amâBoat Trip to Capri from the Port of Sorrento
We arrived at the Porto di Sorrento aka Marina Piccola (small marina) at about 10:15. There was a parking garage right in the main Piazza . The people there were really nice and reasonably professional. We learned that parking always costs âŹ20 on the Amalfi Coast regardless of how long you stay.
One guy even said, “Yea, I don’t wear a watch so it’s easier for me if it’s a flat âŹ20.” You could get frustrated, but when you only have 48 hours, there’s no time to get upset. Have fun and don’t bother sweating the small stuff.
We jumped on a half-day trip to Capri with You Know Boat who are awesome! Our tour was about 4 hours and departed from Sorrento to Capri. We did a full circle around Capri with tons of stops to go snorkeling, check out different grottos, and even jump off some cliffsâmy personal favorite thing to do!
They have a longer 8-hour trip to Capri, which includes a 4-hour stop, which I would recommend if you are staying on the Amalfi Coast longer. With just 48 hours, we did the 4-hour trip.
We got a Caprese sandwich for lunch, included in the cost. They also gave us wine and other snacks. All in all, the trip was really well done and we had a great time.

3:30 pmâPositano
We got back to Sorrento at 2:30 pm, said goodbye to the boat people, and got our car. Next, we drove to Positano, which is where we were booked for the night at Hotel Eden Roc . They were nice enough to offer us a free stay since we featured them in this article and our video, but I have paid for rooms here in the past. It’s a great hotel!
We took a quick shower and got ready for an aperitivo at their bar. They have an amazing view and make incredible drinks. There’s even a nice-sized rooftop pool, which we didn’t have time to enjoy but I definitely will on my next stay.
Aperitivo is a quintessential part of an Italian night out and is normally a cocktail or glass of wine with some finger food. This normally happens between 6:30 pm and 8 pm. After aperitivo, we headed out for dinner.
7:30 pmâDinner at La Tagliatta
I wanted to get to La Tagliatta before sunset because they have an incredible terrace view overlooking the Amalfi Coast.
This massive restaurant is family-run. They are quite literally farm-to-table as the restaurant is located on their cliff-side farm. It is a really cool experience!
That said, if you’re looking for seafood, this is not your place. They have a strict meat and vegetable menu, which is unlike the typical Amalfi Coast diet. I really enjoyed the meal and would definitely recommend the experience to visitors.
10 pmâDrinks at Positano Spiaggia
I was incredibly tired and didn’t make it down to town for drinks. If you’re a night owl, I would recommend getting a bottle of wine or drinks down by the beach of Positano.
There are lots of restaurants, which function as bars throughout the evening. I recommend a very cool place called Music on the Rocks .
Amalfi Coast Itinerary: Day Two
8 amâbreakfast and go.
As usual, we got up pretty early and got going. We had a delicious breakfast at Hotel Eden Roc . Look out for a really fun waiter named Toni. He’s been there for years and is really lighthearted and fun. You can’t mistake him.
We checked out and went to the main beach in Positano to do a little exploring. Essentially, there’s only one winding road in Positano that leads to the beach so it’s difficult to miss.
We then headed to our Kayaking tour in Amalfi Town . Normally, I would recommend spending both nights in one hotel. We wanted to see a lot, so we decided to spend a night in Praiano.
10:15 amâAmalfi Kayak
We signed up for a 10:30 am Kayak tour, which departed from Il Duoglio Spiaggia (beach), which is part of Amalfi Town. The beach is below a cliff and you can reach it in two ways.
The first way is to go down 400+ stairs, which is easy on the way down but murder on the way up. The second is to take a âŹ2 ferry that goes from beach to beach along the Amalfi Coast.
I recommend the second. However, I’m no stranger to exercise and I took the stairs. We also had the car and parked above the beach at this snack bar parking lot .
This is the parking lot where the guy said he doesn’t look at his watch and it cost âŹ20 again. When I came back, our car had a massive scratch on it that cost me âŹ270 to fix. I only had 48 hours and didn’t really see the local police helping much so decided to not try to fight over it and enjoy my time in paradise.
The kayak tour
The Kayak tour was epic. Our guide, who is also an owner, was Antonio. He’s a really interesting local who’s fun and exciting. He does a really good job preparing everyone and is really serious about safety. Best of all, he finds a way to make it all fun.
Antonio also does all the hard work for you other than paddling. He brings the boats in and out of the water and helps everyone get around. If you’re mildly athletic, you’ll be fine and will enjoy yourself.
He took us a few miles down the coast stopping at beaches, grottoes, and rock formations and explaining history and folklore along the way. At one point, we stopped and had some fruit and a swim, which was much needed on a very hot day in June.
I definitely recommend wearing tons of sunscreen and bringing a floppy hat or anything that provides a lot of shade. I forgot my hat and regretted it immensely. All in all, the Kayak tour was awesome. We got a unique perspective and a lot of exercise, plus we had a lot of fun.
2:30 pmâLunch at Lido Degli Artisti
After our tour, we had lunch at Lido Degli Artisti , which has a nice restaurant with a great view. We drank white table wineâan inexpensive yet refreshing wine served in a carafe. I ate Pacchheri, which is a large rigatoni with muscles and clams and it was delicious. Everything tastes better with a good view!
4 pmâFiordo di Furore
After lunch, we decided to head to Fiordo di Furore . It’s an amazing sort of inland beach with bluffs on either side. I’m so happy we did it because it was absolutely incredible. Unfortunately, at this point, we were exhausted. But we kept pushing forward!
5:30 pmâCheck In at Casa Angelina
We checked into 5-star luxury resort Casa Angelina at about 5:30 pm, which left has no time to rest. When we got there, we immediately noticed that it was nicer than we expected! We rolled up sweaty after a day of kayaking so we took showers and started to explore.
The first thing you notice is the scent that follows you around the hotel, which is the key to a luxury experience. The hotel is set high up on the mountain in Praiano so it has amazing views. Praiano faces west, unlike Positano, so you get to watch the sunset from the hotel.
They have multiple restaurants, a bar, a great pool, a gym, and other great amenities. The gym has a therapeutic bath, sauna, and personal trainerâall of which are included in your stay from what I understood.
Casa Angelina hooked us up with two free rooms but did not pay for our recommendation. We never accept money to recommend anything to travelers. We earn money by selling our tours, so you know all our recommendations are non-biased.
I must add that not every complimentary stay we get comes with a recommendation. Casa Angelina was an entirely different situation. The hotel is just so incredible that it makes our job very easy. It does come at a high cost, but if you have the budget for a very luxurious hotel, I would spend it here!
8:30 pmâSeaside Dinner in Praiano
We enjoyed a cocktail at the hotel bar, a limoncello mojito, and then went to dinner at Il Pirata in Praiano. The hotel arranged a water taxi, which is totally the way to go. The restaurant is on the waterâwe literally stepped off the boat and sat at our table!
Il Pirata is a cool restaurant that is family-run and has been since before Praiano was as built up as it is today. They have a lot of tables but make a reservation in advance.
They also have a cool bar that they built themselves! Ok, maybe you need more context for that to sound as impressive as it is. They used dynamite to create a cave inside the mountain and converted it into a bar. The bartenders are great and I don’t throw around these types of compliments lightly.
I can’t stand it when I ask a bartender what the best drinks are and they say, “What do you like?” These guys just said, ci penso io , which means “I’ll take care of it.” They made me an amazing rosemary gin drink that was so far from what I would normally have ordered and I was so happy when I tried it!
At dinner, we ate a ton of seafood including raw ricci (sea urchins). I’m always looking for strange new foods and was excited to see they had ricci on the menu as I had never tried them raw. Amazing!
We took a water taxi home, which might have been the highlight of the evening! We took a super fun detour into a grotto and it just shows you how proud Italians are of their incredible country.
Amalfi Coast Itinerary Bonus: Pompeii
8 amâbreakfast and pompeii.
We were absolutely committed to getting the most out of our 48 hours so we got up, ate breakfast, and headed back to Naples train station to drop off the carâbut not without a stop in Pompeii.
We hooked up with one of our guides there and did a 2-hour tour of what is commonly referred to as the best-preserved archeological site on Earth.
The Pompeii tour we took starts in Pompeii, but there is also another tour that leaves from Rome, hits Pompeii, and stops in Sorrento before returning to Rome. Both are great options that I highly recommend depending on your travel plans!
And that’s how you can spend 48 hours on the Amalfi Coast experiencing a bit of everything. From scenic drives to boat cruises, idyllic beaches, Roman ruins, delicious cuisine, gorgeous hotels, kayak tour adventures, and a pitstop at Pompeii, there’s a lot you can do with two days!

You will have to ascend or descend (depending which way you come about) and the terrain is quite uneven so make sure you wear appropriate shoes. A sun hat would be handy if is a warm day and plenty of water. Our guide was very informative and friendly. Thank you Enzo.â -Tripadvisor Reviewer

- Beginning in 2025, U.S. and Canadian passport holders must register for an ETIAS travel authorization in order to enter many European countries.
- Passport holders from over 60 visa-exempt countries (including the U.S. and Canada) will need to apply for an ETIAS travel authorization in order to visit 30 European countries. That means that even if youâve previously traveled to any of these European countries without a visa, starting in 2025, youâll need to get ETIAS authorization to visit them again. If youâre traveling to multiple countries with this requirement, you only need to complete the form once. All Go Ahead travelers are responsible for obtaining their own ETIAS travel authorization before departure. For more details, please visit our Help Center .
- If you are not a U.S. or Canadian citizen, you must contact your destination countryâs consulate for your specific entry requirements.
