Denver’s eastern neighbor, and the larger city by land area (third largest in the state by population), Aurora, is a big place with plenty of things to do. Year-round, this vibrant, diverse city of 380,000 people is bustling with activity.

Those visiting or living in Aurora will find everything from lakes and hiking trails to some of the best eating in the metropolitan area. The climate features hot, dry summers that cool down nicely at night, and fairly mild, but chilly winters. Find slightly cheaper accommodations than the capital city, so consider its top hotels for easy access to the front range urban corridor and Denver International Airport.

With all the sunshine that Colorado gets, there are hundreds of blue sky days to enjoy “The Sunrise of Colorado” (that’s the town’s nickname ). Explore Aurora’s numerous parks and trails all year long.

Aurora Reservoir

Covering an area of over 800 acres, the Aurora Reservoir is a favorite destination for outdoor recreation. Boating is permitted seasonally, but no gas motors are allowed. 12 miles of multi-use trails are open to hikers, and many more miles are open to bikers and horseback riders. Horse rentals and riding lessons are available at the on-site 12 Mile Stables. The park is mostly dog-friendly, and there’s even a fenced, 107-acre off-leash area for dogs to enjoy.

Sand Creek Regional Greenway Trail

Spanning nearly 14 miles from Commerce City to Aurora through Denver, the Sand Creek Regional Greenway Trail is open to runners, walkers, bikers, and even horseback riders. The path is mostly flat, and much of it is paved, making it appropriate for visitors of all backgrounds. Parking is available at seven locations, but the most convenient options for Aurora are at Sand Creek Park or Morrison Nature Center.

The park is open from dawn to dusk each day, and leashed dogs are permitted. Visitors should keep in mind that the Denver section of the trail is not plowed during the winter months, so access can be tricky after a snowfall.

Dynamic Paintball Park

Offering paintball and airsoft for individuals and groups, Dynamic Paintball makes the perfect activity for adventure-seeking visitors. Multiple tiers of equipment rental packages are available, each including safety equipment. Visitors must be at least 10 years old to participate in regular gameplay. Paintballs must be purchased on-site.

For those hoping to play airsoft, keep in mind that it’s generally only available one day per month, and airsoft gun rentals are not available at the park.

For those traveling with a large group, think about booking either the 1, 2, or 3-star packages, all of which include everything needed for a day of fun for the entire group. All players must sign a waiver before participating, so, consider printing and signing it before arriving to save time.

With 250 ethnic restaurants serving food from all around the world, Aurora is a foodie’s paradise . For a new food experience, try dining at an authentic Yemeni restaurant like Yemen Grill, or head to Addis Ababa on Havana St. for delicious Ethiopian food. For those with less adventurous palates, grab a slice of pizza at Mama Alvino’s Pizzeria or a burger at Cedar Creek Pub .

For Asian cuisines, stop by Bua Traditional Thai Cuisine for top-tier Thai food or Sushi-Rama for a popular Japanese spot. Aurora is home to countless other brunch spots, fine dining establishments, and quick-serve restaurants, so be sure to check out as many as possible during a visit.

Both The Southlands and Stanley Marketplace are two exception places to dine out or shop for a wide array of goods. The former is your typical mall experience, but it’s also the hub of Aurora, so plenty of activities and fun exists here too. The latter has a lot of local stores and high-quality made products.

Aurora History Museum

First opened in 1979, the Aurora History Museum is dedicated to preserving and displaying artifacts relating to the history of Aurora and Colorado. Some exhibits rotate throughout the year, but the museum is also home to a permanent exhibit known as Growing Home. It features a restored 1913 trolley and over 100 photos and objects.

Admission to the museum is free, and it’s open every day except for Monday. For those unable to visit in person, consider checking out one of the free online exhibits.

The Wreck Room Escape Game

The perfect activity for dreary days, The Wreck Room Escape Game offers visitors the chance to break out from one of three rooms. Beginners should try their luck in The Upside Down room, while expert escape gamers should attempt the Area 51 room. Each room is designed to take approximately 60 minutes to complete, and they’re most suited to children over 12 years of age.

Reservations are required and must be made online. Each booking is private, so all groups will be alone during their adventure. All games start at their scheduled time, so plan to arrive approximately 10-15 minutes early to get settled.

Summer things to do

At 5,403 feet of elevation, Aurora is slightly higher than Denver, but you’ll still get those hot front range summer days. Luckily, the dry air makes it feel much more manageable, allowing you to still get outside and make the most of your days.

Arapahoe Park Racetrack

With live horse races occurring multiple days each week during the summer months, the Arapahoe Park Racetrack is the perfect place to visit for watching and betting on horse races near town. At the track, snacks and drinks are available on the Grandstand level.

There is no age requirement to enter the park, but visitors must be at least 18 to place a wager. For those who would like to bet on a race without visiting the park, off-track betting is also available.

Aurora is home to five municipal golf courses, all of which are open to the public. Aurora Hills was the first of the five to be established, and it remains one of the most popular courses in the area. With 18 holes, a pro shop, and a driving range, Aurora Hills is conveniently located and features all of the best amenities. After a game, stop by the Tin Cup Bar & Grill for a full menu of sandwiches, burgers, salads, and more.

Tee times for all five courses can be made online.

Winter things to do

Most of Colorado’s wintertime fun lies within the Rockies. Luckily, all the ski resorts near Denver , are also the closest ones to Aurora, just add 15-3o minutes to your drive. Otherwise, head to the Southlands for dining, shopping, and ice skating.

The Pond Ice Rink at Southlands

Located in Southlands, an expansive shopping center with popular shops like H&M, Sephora, and Torrid, The Pond is an outdoor ice rink offering skating during the winter months. The rink is open from November to February each year, and skate rentals are available.

Tickets must be purchased online. There is no age restriction, but all participants under 12 must be accompanied by an adult. Skating lessons are not available, but there are a limited number of skate aids available for novice skaters.

Colorado is home to four stunning national parks to visit–and despite the Centennial State’s reputation for its incredible Rocky Mountain landscapes, each park is incredibly unique and well worth a visit!

Rocky Mountain National Park

Welcoming more than 3 million visitors each year, Rocky Mountain National Park is not only the state’s most popular national park, it’s easily one of the top places to visit in Colorado as a whole!

From snowcapped mountains to alpine lakes, and from challenging hikes to relaxing scenic drives, Rocky Mountain National Park has options for all kinds of travelers–the only thing you truly need to justify a visit is an appreciation for alpine beauty.

Some of the most popular things to do in RMNP include visiting Bear Lake, hiking to Emerald Lake and Dream Lake, driving the beautiful Trail Ridge Road, and checking out Old Fall River Road (either by car or by foot depending on the season).

If you’re visiting in winter, don’t worry, much of the park is still accessible–just be prepared to lace up your cross country skis to visit some of the most popular lakes!

Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park

Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park  is an often-overlooked national park in Gunnison, Colorado–but if you add it to your list of beautiful places in Colorado to visit, there’s no doubt that you’ll be blown away.

It is one of the deepest canyons in North America at 8,043 feet deep.  It’s hard to imagine that, even when you’re there looking at it.  It’s easiest to visit the South Rim just outside of Gunnison which is also where you can access the river at the bottom of the canyon.

There is also access to the North Rim which is perfect if you want to get away from the already meager crowds. 

Keep in mind that though the two rims look close to each other on a map, they’re a couple hours worth of driving apart.

While the park isn’t bursting with hiking trails, there are quite a few to choose from and just as many amazing viewpoints to stop at. 

Keep your eyes peeled for bears while you’re exploring the park.  

Even if you just have a couple of hours, it’s totally worth visiting.  Most of the trails are short, under three miles round-trip. 

The Oak Flat Loop Trail is great for people looking to hike below the rim but not all the way to the river.  It’s two miles round-trip and can be narrow in some places, so be careful. 

Also make sure to drive down to the river, even if just for the experience.

Mesa Verde National Park

Mesa Verde National Park  is home to 600 cliff dwellings. 

The Ancient Puebloans built their villages in overhangs in the side of steep cliffs and climbed down from above, using hand and footholds carved directly into the cliff. 

Today, you can see many of them from overlooks at the top of the mesa and see some of them up close on guided tours.  Bear in mind that you need to climb down ladders or steep steps to visit them.

The cliff dwellings are truly incredible to see.  Highlights include Cliff Palace (the largest), Long House, and Balcony House (where you need to crawl through a very narrow tunnel to exit).

Each year, some of the other dwellings are also opened up to small group visits, with a ranger as a guide.  You need to hike to these, and often climb down the original hand and footholds (with the help of modern-day chains to make it safer). 

Whether you see the cliff dwellings from overlooks, on a guided tour, or a small group back-country hike, you are sure to be fascinated by them.

Great Sand Dunes National Park

Great Sand Dunes National Park, found in the Saguache and Alamosa Counties of southern Colorado, encompasses more than 100,000 acres of open-air adventure.

The fascination not only lies with the tallest sand dunes in North America, but also the surrounding landscape that features forests, snow-capped mountains, and rivers.

There is so much to do that 3 days is the minimum number of days to spend in and around the surrounding area. Top sights in the preserve include High Dune, Zapata Falls, Medano Pass.

Sandboarding is a popular activity and should not be missed. Other activities worth trying include sledding, horseback riding, and hiking to catch a beautiful sunrise .

The park is always open and no reservations are required. However, the best time to visit is during spring and fall.

The closest town is Mosca, but the park is easily reached from any major city as the San Luis Valley Airport is a mere 45-minute drive from the park’s entrance.

Known as the gateway to Rocky Mountain National Park, the charming small town of Estes Park easily ranks among the best places to visit in Colorado.

With its beautiful downtown (don’t miss a chance to stroll along the riverwalk!), its huge prevalance of elk living in and around the town, its beautiful lake, and the world-class nature of nearby hiking opportunities, Estes Park belongs on any Colorado bucket list.

While in Estes Park, be sure to stop by the historic Park Theatre, consider a whitewater rafting trip, go for a scenic drive, check out one of the town’s breweries, and pay a visit to the beautiful Stanley Hotel, which inspired Stephen King’s The Shining.

Even if you don’t check in, the hotel is still worth a peak!

And, of course, the main attraction lies just outside of town: no trip to Estes Park is complete without plenty of time spent in Rocky Mountain National Park!

It is famous as a ski resort and is also considered to be the capital of wildflowers, making Crested Butte a fantastic year-round travel destination in Colorado.

Colorado’s capital city is arguably one of the trendiest and fastest-growing cities in the country–and given that Denver offers a fantastic array of things to do while also being located within proximity of epic mountain hikes, it’s no surprise.

Known for its breweries, parks, and proximity to Rocky Mountain National Park as well as popular mountain towns like Boulder and Estes Park, Denver makes a fantastic weekend getaway destination .

While you’re in Denver, consider catching a game at Coor’s Field, seeing a show at the iconic Red Rocks Amphitheatre, strolling down the 16th Street Mall, stopping by Larimer Square, and–of course–hitting up a few of those popular breweries.

If you’re looking to add some museum-hopping to your Denver itinerary , the city also has you covered, from classics like the Denver Art Museum to more unique options like the Wings Over the Rockies Air & Space Museum.

Steamboat Springs

Steamboat Springs might be a popular ski town in Colorado and home to many former Olympians, but a visit here can feel less like your typical Colorado ski resort vacation and more like an adventure.

This is a town with a vibrant local community, humorous traditions, and lively Western history.

A four-season destination, there’s plenty of things to do year-round in Steamboat. But for many, winter is the most magical time.

Winter sports are everywhere, not just the main ski resort.

The locals even have their own hill in the center of town and during the Winter Carnival each February, the town comes alive with ski contests (complete with light-up costumes and fireworks), outdoor concerts, sculptures, and parades where horses pull thrill-seekers on skis over jumps right through the middle of town!

After all of that winter fun, take a soothing dip in one of the  hot springs around town , such as Strawberry Hot Springs, a local favorite for its natural scenery tucked back in a canyon.

• Chalet Val d’Isere is also a fabulous option but with more of a homely vibe. There are just a few rooms and it is a classic ski lodge style cabin complete with plenty of cozy features.

Breckenridge

Glenwood Springs

Glenwood Springs is a city right by the Rocky Mountains famous for being home to some of the best hot springs in Colorado .

It’s renowned as an excellent Colorado vacation spot for just about everyone, including families and would-be adventurers. 

If you’re looking to soak in hot springs, you need to visit Iron Mountain Hot Springs. There are 16 hot springs you can enjoy while getting a scenic view of the Rocky Mountains.

If you’re looking to go hiking, then the Glenwood Canyon is readily available with hikes like the Grizzly Creek and the Hanging Lake. 

There are also plenty of other outdoor thrilling activities you can do like paragliding and rafting.

If you’re visiting as a family, there are plenty of outdoor kid-friendly activities children can participate in.

With such a huge opportunity for children to receive an outdoor education, it’s no surprise that there are numerous summer camps in the state  and city. 

Apart from outdoor adventures to partake in, be sure to visit the famous comedy shows that go on at the Glenwood Vaudeville Revue.

Where to Stay in Glenwood Springs

• Glenwood Springs B&B: Fancy staying in a piece of history? This quaint B&B is over 100 years old and is exceptionally well maintained. Many of the rooms have deep claw-foot bathtubs and if that isn’t enough water for you there is a huge jacuzzi for guests.
• Hanging Lake Inn: For something more classic this Inn is a great option. Facilities are fresh and modern, and there is a lovely porch area with views of the hills.

Manitou Springs

Manitou Springs is a historic city located just outside of Colorado Springs with roots tracing back to the Pikes Peak gold rush.

It is the perfect Colorado bucket list destination for some small-town charm, natural beauty, culture, and fun!

A visit to Manitou Springs would not be complete without taking a  self-guided walking tour of the springs. There are eight springs in total along a 1.4-mile trail through town, each with its own unique mineral content.

The Manitou Cliff Dwellings, authentic relocated Pueblos, is another must-visit spot in Manitou Springs.

For some more hiking, climb the Incline near Pikes Peak for some stunning views, or if you prefer not to hike, drive the Pikes Peak Highway to the summit.

After a long day of exploring, find plenty of food and bar options in downtown Manitou Springs.

If traveling with kids, be sure to check out the world-famous Penny Arcade for games, kiddie rides, and prizes! And finally stop in at Pike’s Peak Ice Cream for some tasty treats and ice cream! 

Where to Stay in Manitou Springs

• Cliff House: Looking like something out of a fairy story this fabulous hotel has wonderful old-world charm, pretty views, and some rooms even have working fireplaces!
• Magnuson Grand : For more of a classic modern hotel this is a great option. The facilities are lovely and there are mountain views throughout. It is also minutes away from the waterfalls and Garden of the Gods.

Telluride is a small but mighty town with colorful mining history and unparalleled landscapes that draw visitors from all over the country. 

Tucked away in the box canyon in San Juan Mountains in southwest Colorado, Telluride is definitely an exclusive destination as it’s not easy to get to. It takes about 5-6 hours from Denver to get here, and the local airport doesn’t have big commercial flights. 

Telluride is a scenic destination that is renowned for its year-round outdoor opportunities, gorgeous nature, and a vibrant art scene, so it’s not just skiing that brings so many people here (Although Telluride does have some great slopes). 

Telluride also offers some of the best hiking trails in Colorado from the iconic Blue Lakes a short drive away to Jud Wiebe Memorial Trail that can be accessed from downtown Telluride.

For an amazing experience, take a free gondola between Telluride and Mountain Village from where you can get a panoramic view of the San Juan Mountains. 

Visitors also enjoy an ice rink at Hotel Madeline or get a tour of the area to learn about its history of silver mining.

Downtown Telluride is home to a big art scene with several galleries and you can easily participate in one of the organized tours. 

Where to Stay in Telluride

• Mountain Lodge: This classic chalet style aparthotel offers wonderful fully equipped, spacious apartments. It is nestled in the mountains and has onsite spa facilities and a great restaurant.
• The Bivvi Hostel: Don’t let the hostel name fool you! The facilities here are excellent are there is more to offer than crowded dorm-rooms. Private rooms are spacious and have private bathrooms. Shared facilities onsite feature billiards, a hot tub, garden and pretty terrace.

• Lodge at Lionscreek: The location for this hotel is perfect, it is right next to the transit point for the ski lifts. Ski equipment is also available for rental on site if you don’t bring your own. The facilities are excellent, rooms have views over Gore Creek and are all private apartment style with their own kitchen facilities, some of the larger ones also have beautiful dining spaces in case you want to host!
• Tivoli Lodge: For a hotel set up this is a great option, rooms are fabulous and quite large. The hotel itself is a few meters away from several slope and ski lifts, it also has an onsite cocktail lounge for après-ski!

Pagosa Springs

Pagosa Springs is a town picturesquely situated on the San Juan River in the southwestern part of Colorado.

It is worth adding it to the  road trip itinerary, especially when you plan also visit Durango and Great Sand Dunes National Park. Pagosa Springs will be the perfect stop for a longer break on the US-160W route.

The town is famous for its magnificent thermal springs, thanks to which it owes its name. In Ute, “pagosah” means “healing waters.” Pagosa is the home of the world’s deepest geothermal hot spring.

So, the best thing you can do in this town is soaked up the hot springs and relax.

The mineral-rich waters fill the baths at The Springs Resort & Spa, The Overlook Hot Springs, and Healing Waters Resort & Spa. Each of them is open to the public.

In addition to the hot springs resorts, there are interesting and picturesque hiking trails around Pagosa Springs. You can admire fabulous waterfalls like Treasure Falls or Piedra Falls. Moreover, rafting and kayaking trips are popular on the San Juan River.

Spend a weekend or even a long weekend exploring Colorado Springs . It’s the perfect amount of time to experience the highlights of this small town in Colorado.

Colorado Springs is well known for its Manitou Springs Incline which gains nearly 2,000 feet of elevation over less than 1 mile. Whether you’re looking for a tough workout to start training for Colorado 14ers (14,000-foot mountains), or just want to challenge yourself, this incline trail is a must.

Colorado Springs is also known for the beautiful Garden of the Gods park.

The Garden of the Gods is known for its bright orange rock formations. It’s a popular spot among rock climbers or you can spend some time biking around or even hiking around.

Next on the list of must-see places in Colorado Springs is Pikes Peak. Which is the only 14er in this area. You have the option of hiking to the top, which is 26.2 miles round trip with around 7,500 feet of elevation gain, or you could also hike one way and have someone pick you up at the top. The other alternative is to drive to the top. 

After you’ve had a good workout from all of that hiking, head over to the SunWater Spa and soak in their hot springs. This is a rewarding treat after a hard workout.

Mount Evans

If standing on the summit of a 14er is on your Colorado bucket list, don’t miss a trip to Mount Evans.

You can reach the 14,265-foot summit of this mountain in multiple ways, so you get to decide how hard you want to work to get to the top.

Mount Evans is located about 60 miles west of Denver, along Mount Evans Scenic Byway (aka Highway 5), which is the highest paved road in the whole country.

You can actually drive it straight to the top with only a short stroll to the true summit from the parking lot.

For the extra bragging rights and experience of hiking a 14er , pull off earlier on the road and park at Summit Lake trailhead.

From there, hike approximately 4.5 miles round trip (with 2300 feet of elevation gain) to get to the summit of Mount Evans.

If you prefer pedal power, you can bike to the summit as well.

Be aware that the road to the trailhead and summit is closed in winter, so plan to visit Mount Evans in spring, summer, or fall.

There is a flaw in this article, Grand Lake is a very nice small mountain town. And yes there is a lake called Grand Lake, but the big lake is called Lake Granby.

Not a flaw. Lake Granby is man-made. The article states that Grand Lake is the largest natural lake in CO, which is in fact, true.

I can’t believe Ouray wasn’t on the list.

Tourist from back east has visited Ouray several times. Great area to visit, hike and view mountains. Definitely an oversite! Friendly. Great camping nearby Norman and Linda

Colorado communities are prepared to illuminate the skies for Independence Day, with parades, traditional fireworks, laser shows, and drone displays across the state.

Fourth of July food trucks and fireworks

The annual 4th of July fireworks display will be held at Stenger Sports Complex, located at 11200 W. 58th Ave. Gates will open to vehicles at 6:30 p.m. and the fireworks show will begin at approximately 9 p.m. Parking will be available free of charge on a first-come, first-served basis. Handicap parking is accessible in the northeast lot. Food trucks will be on site from 5:30 to 9 p.m.

Fourth Of July Celebration 2024

Aspen’s celebration includes the traditional parade from 11:00 a.m. until noon, and a Community Village from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The theme for Aspen’s 2024 festivities is “Yeti to Party!” Organizers note: Look up at the sky before the parade starts for the Tiger Squadron Aircraft Flyover!

Fourth of July fireworks

The city of Aurora hosts a fireworks show at the Aurora Municipal Center, located at 15151 E. Alameda Pkwy. The event features musical performances and food trucks, in addition to the large fireworks display. Access to the Center's Great Lawn will open at 6 p.m. The fireworks will commence around 9:30 p.m. and will last for approximately 30 minutes.

38th Annual Salute to the USA on July 3rd  

Avon holds its big festivities the day before the 4th. The event takes place from 5 to 10:30 p.m. at Harry A. Nottingham Park, 414 W. Beaver Creek Blvd., and includes face painters, holiday-themed stilt walkers, balloon sculptors, magicians, inflatable fun houses and more. Bring your blanket and enjoy fresh squeezed lemonade, funnel cakes, turkey legs and roasted corn. Live music begins at 6 p.m. Melissa Etheridge headlines with Texas Hill as the opener.

4th of July festivities and fireworks

The day starts early, with the Bayfield Lion's Club hosting a pancake breakfast at 7 a.m. with the 17th Annual Firecracker 5K  at 8:00 a.m. There will be a flag raising at Mill and Pearl streets at 10:15am and Isabella Asebedo will sing the national anthem to kick off the Parade. Festivities continue with the Serrano's horseshoe tournament at Eagle Park and a beer garden, live music with Agave & Wild Country, and vendors in Joe Stephenson Park, where the day wraps up with  with fireworks at dusk.

July 3rd fireworks

The town of Berthoud will host an Independence Day celebration a day early, at Waggener Farm Park located at 1000 Berthoud Parkway. The event will feature music, food trucks and activities. Festivities will begin at 5 p.m. with fireworks at dusk. The musical lineup this year includes DJ Drake performing at 5 p.m. and Unauthorized Absence taking the stage at 7:30.

Beaver Creek

This all-day event at Beaver Creek Resort starts at noon and includes musical performances, food trucks, fireworks and an inflatable activity zone for kids. Organizers recommend parking in the Bear or Elk lot and taking the complimentary shuttle, which runs every few minutes, up to the village.

Stars & Stripes Celebration on July 3rd

The annual Stars & Stripes event kicks off Brighton’s Independence Day celebrations early, on Wednesday, July 3rd. Food and beer vendors will start serving at 4 p.m. Enjoy live entertainment with country singer Thomas Mac beginning at 7:30 p.m. and stick around for musical fireworks at 9:30 p.m. Parking at Riverdale Regional Park is free and attendees are asked to leave pets at home.

The City of Brighton's Fourth of July Celebration will be at Carmichael Park on July 4. The event will have a DJ, concert, food trucks, bubble tower, free face painting and a large firework display after dark.

The Great American Picnic on July 4th

Celebrate Fourth of July at the 2024 Great American Picnic and Fireworks show at Broomfield County Commons Park. Festivities start at 5 p.m. on the fourth, with activities for all ages, a Bike Parade, live music. Fireworkss start at 9:15 p.m.

Fourth of July rodeo and fireworks

The 69th annual Brush Rodeo is three days full of all the rodeo action a fan could hope for, from bronc riding, barrel racing and bull riding, to calf roping, steer wrestling and mutton bustin’. There’s also an art show, and on the 4th itself, a parade and evening fireworks to close it all out.

The Buena Vista Festival is an all-day event at McPhelemy Park, at Highway 24 and Main Street. The day starts at 7 a.m. with an Optimist Club pancake breakfast and includes a 5k, parade, festival and duck race before wrapping up with fireworks at dusk

Castle Rock

Castle Rockin' the Fourth of July

Castle Rock’s fireworks show for this year will be held at the Acme Brick facility on Prairie Hawk Drive, starting around 9:30 p.m. on the 4. The 15-minute high-flying fireworks display kicks off with a three-shot salute to start the show. Recommended viewing locations around Town include: Downtown, Metzler Ranch Community Park, Rock Park, Miller Activity Complex and portions of the Red Hawk neighborhood.

The fireworks start at dusk — around 9 p.m. — from the top of the famous Skyline Drive. While the show will be visible across most of Cañon City, organizers suggest the parking lot at Margaret Park CCHS as a good place to watch. The show is put on by Cañon City Fireworks, a group of friends and community organizers who’ve raised the funds for it over the past 14 months.

Fort Carson Freedom Fest, June 29

Get in the spirit of Independence Day early with Fort Carson Freedom Fest at Iron Horse Park. This free event is open to the public and includes a live concert, fireworks, festival entertainment, food trucks and activities for the whole family! 

Star Spangled Symphony on July 4th at 4:30 p.m. and fireworks at 9:15 p.m.

In the afternoon, the public can attend a free community concert from the Colorado Springs Philharmonic at the Pikes Peak Center. The event requires registration, but that doesn’t guarantee you a seat, which will be on a first come first served basis. 

In the evening, ten different fireworks shows will light up the sky around the city. Locations include Falcon Freedom Days, Banning Lewis Ranch, Patty Jewett Golf Course and Garden of the Gods Resort and Club ( find a full map here ). The public is invited to watch from their porches, or from nearby open spaces. The concert will be broadcast on several local radio stations, and the fireworks shows will be streamed on kktv.com.

The Colorado Springs Switchbacks fireworks display at Weidner Field  

The first 5,000 attendees will get LED light-up foam wands at the gate, so they can join the magic all night. After the Switchbacks take on FC Tulsa, the highlight of the evening is the Pikes Peak National Bank's 4th of July Star Spangled Fireworks Spectacular. Gates for the match open at 6 p.m. and the game starts at 7.

The Springs’ Pioneer League baseball team will have fireworks displays after its games on the Wednesday and Thursday at UCHealth Park!

Commerce City

Colorado Rapids' 4thFEST

The Rapids’ 28th annual fun-filled Independence Day celebration at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park starts with a free pre-game festival and block party put on by the team and the city. Activities include live music, soccer darts, a rock-climbing wall, a mobile ropes course, an alpine tubing slide, a mechanical bull, and entertainments for the younger set. An LED wall will stream that evening’s game. After the Rapids’ match against Sporting Kansas City, the night wraps up with what organizers claim is “the largest public fireworks show in Colorado.” 4thFEST kicks off at 5 p.m. and is open to the public, but you’ll need a ticket if you want to attend the game. 

4th of July festival and fireworks

Centennial Park on Mildred Avenue is the site for the town’s celebration, starting at 4 p.m. on the 4th. The evening celebration will feature a car show, live music and fireworks. The iconic rock band Flash Back performs at 7 p.m. after the car display. Mobile food vendors Smashed Lemonade, Sneaky Snacks, and Sweet Water Gypsies will be on hand too. Fireworks will begin at dusk and last 20 minutes. Fireworks will launch from Parque De Vida, much of which will be under a safety closure. This is an alcohol-free event.

Northwest Freedom Fest

The inaugural North West Freedom Fest kicks off July 4th in Breeze Street Park. The family friendly all-day event is alcohol and smoking-free, with games, face painting and bounce houses.

The VFW invites floats of all sorts to join, as long as they keep to the theme of Red, White & Blue. No pre-registration is required, but participants will be asked to donate to the VFW for their entry fee. Line up begins at 10 a.m. on Washington St between Victory and 7th, with the parade stepping off around 11 a.m. 

Independence Day Celebration with fireworks at dusk

Festivities begin at 10 a.m. on the 4th, with a parade, street vendors and a farmer’s market. At 6 p.m., visitors can watch a performance by Creede Repertory Theatre or “Young Frankenstein" or head to the ChuteOut Rodeo at the Fairgrounds. There will also be live music at various places around town. Fireworks begin at dusk south of town, near the Fairgrounds/RV Park.

Crested Butte

Independence Day Celebration and Fireworks July 3

Gates open at 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday for this free, family-friendly concert and Independence Day celebration at the Red Lady Stage in the CBMR Base Area. The event features live country music, BBQ by CBMR and children’s activities. The fireworks show starts at dark. 

Cripple Creek 

The fireworks show starts around 20 minutes after dusk (approximately 9:30 p.m.) from the south side of town, south of Myers Ave. on July 4th.  

The Colorado National Speedway hosts firework shows on July 6 and 7, after the Independence Day Sprint Car Spectacular races. Gates open at 4:00 p.m. and racing starts at 6:30.

The Delta Volunteer Fire Department puts on a fireworks on July 4th as part of the second annual Western Sky Balloon Festival. Fireworks start around 9:45 p.m. after the evening glow.

Independence Eve at Civic Center Park

The City and County of Denver presents a transformed, interactive event for 2024, with the launch of the Civic Center Night Market, music from emerging DJs, a live performance from the Colorado Symphony Brass & Percussion Ensemble, and Denver's largest-ever drone show. Visitors can enjoy food, music, and pop up shopping and then find a space on the grass to watch the drones.

Colorado Rockies Fireworks

The team hosts fireworks shows after its games on July 4 and 5. Getting inside Coors Field requires a ticket, but the display is visible from all around the ballpark.

Elitch Gardens Fireworks

On Friday, July 5, the park lights up the sky at closing time, around 9 p.m. For those outside the amusement park, there should be good views where 25th Ave. turns into Zuni in the Highlands.

Fourth of July festivities 

The city has three days of events stretching from July 3 to 6. On the Fourth, a full day of activities begins with breakfast  at 7:30 a.m. at Rotary Park, followed by the Freedom 5K Race. The town parade steps off at 5pm on Main Avenue. And after dark, Zambelli Fireworks will light up the sky with a big-boom fireworks show starting at 9:15 pm. The launch zone is the Durango Dog Park. Fireworks will be visible from most of Downtown Durango and along Rim Drive, with the Transit Center as the best viewing area. 

Independence Day fireworks

The City of Englewood presents its annual Independence Day Fireworks in Cornerstone and Belleview parks from 5 to 10 p.m. The event brings people together from Englewood, Littleton, Sheridan, and unincorporated Arapahoe County.

Erie Community Park will host food trucks and vendors on-site with live music. Starting around 9 p.m., weather permitting, the fireworks display will be choreographed to music. Fireworks will launch from the rooftop of the Erie Community Center.

4th of July Celebration with fireworks

Bring your blanket or lawn chair and find a spot along Lake Estes to enjoy the evening. It starts with a concert at 7 p.m. at Performance Park's outdoor auditorium. Fireworks around 9:30. Looking for something to do earlier in the day? There will be a display of classic cars at the American Legion Post 119, 850 N. Saint Vrain Ave., starting  at 11 a.m.

The celebration includes the Burro Buster 5K scholarship race and the “Strut Your Mutt” dog competition. There will be a community flea market with local food and beverages, as well as a free outdoor concert by Narrow Gauge. Line up for the parade begins at 4 p.m. in front of the courthouse on 4th street, with step off at 4:45. After dark, the firework show will take place over the Fairplay Beach. 

4th at Firestone festival with fireworks at dusk

Festivities for the 22nd annual 4th at Firestone kick off at 10 a.m. with a parade showcasing local talent and community spirit. The full day of activities includes from games to crafts, a vendor market and food trucks. The evening features live music performances capped off by a fireworks display after dark.

Start the day with a Wet and Dry parade on Main Street at 10 a.m., followed by a duck derby at noon. Musical entertainment runs from 4 to 7 p.m. and the day caps off with fireworks at Florence High School Hill.

Food, games, live music and more take place Saturday, July 6 from noon to 4 p.m. at Community Center Park at the Fort Lupton Recreation Center. The fireworks go off a bit after dark.

The July 3 spectacle may be seen throughout Fruita after dusk. Rotary Park, the Visitor Center, and James M. Robb State Park are popular viewing areas. Snooks Bottom Open Space will be closed for the day.  

Day-long festivities

The town is adding a new event to its roster of 4th of July entertainments this year — a SUP-athlon, combining a half mile of stand-up paddleboarding, a five mile bike ride and a 5k. The town’s parade steps off at 11 a.m. along 6th St. in the historic downtown. There’s also a community BBQ, beer garden, and live music around the town.

Fireworks Display on July 2

Fireworks will shoot off from Glendale’s Infinity Park Stadium at 9:30 p.m. on Tuesday, July 2.  If viewing from the park, you may arrive anytime you like, but be wary that parking is limited in the area. Street closures for the event will begin around 8:00 p.m. and remain in effect until approximately 10:30 pm. 

Glenwood Springs

Independence Day in Two Rivers Park with laser show

The celebration begins at 4:30 p.m. with activities like Super Fiesta Bounce Houses, wood & steel axe throwing, lawn games, face painting and food and drink. Live music begins at 5 p.m. Finally, a laser show will light up the night starting at 9 p.m.

4th of July Festival at Lions Park

The Golden Lions Club hosts this annual 4th of July community celebration in Lions Park, beginning at 11:30 a.m. The celebration is a day for families, friends, and neighbors to picnic or buy food and drink and enjoy the festivities, including live music, face painting and a 27-ft giant slide.

Rodeo at the Flying Heels Arena and fireworks on July 5 and 6

The Amazing Westernaires perform followed by fireworks between 9:15 and 9:30, conditions permitting.

Greeley Stampede parade and fireworks

The 102nd Greeley Stampede Independence Day procession has a theme of Western heritage this year.  The parade starts at 9am at the University of Northern Colorado campus at 19th Street and terminates on 5th Street outside historic Lincoln Park. In the evening, the fireworks show begins about 9:30 p.m. at Island Grove park.

Fourth of July fireworks after dark

The fireworks over Grand Lake start around 10 p.m. and last for 30 minutes. Expect traffic delays after the show, so plan to spend time in town. If you're watching from a boat, it may take a couple of hours to get off the lake. Bring food and drinks, and enjoy music and food at local establishments after the display.

4th of July Community Celebration

In the morning, both the Western Track & Field 5k Fun Run and the 1 mile Kids Fun Run start and end in Legion Park, while at Jorgensen Park, festivities start early with the annual balloon rally. In the afternoon at the park, there will be kids games, food vendors, music and more family fun. Live Music by Stoplight Observations starts at 6:30 p.m., at 9:15 p.m., a presentation by the color guard will be followed by fireworks.

The Cattlemen's Days Carnival is also going on at the Gunnison County Fairgrounds, with rides, food and entertainment.

The celebration at Lundgren Amphitheater Field includes live music at 7:30p.m. with free hot dogs and popsicles (while supplies last), lawn games, and fireworks at about 9:30 p.m. from the Gypsum Sports Complex.

Highlands Ranch

July 4th Parade and fireworks

The parade starts with a short Family Bike & Pet Parade, for children as young as 2, up through sixth grade, followed by the longer community parade. For the family parade, deck yourself, plus your kids, pets and bikes in patriotic attire. Afterward, families can find a place to watch the community parade. The fireworks take place at Highland Heritage Regional Park and attendees can bring food or buy it from food trucks. The fireworks show starts around 9:30 p.m., unless the weather is bad or there is a fire ban.

4th of July Celebration

The City of Idaho Springs is hosting a town party, featuring activities for the whole family from 10:45 a.m. until 8 p.m. along Miner Street. The event concludes with a fireworks show over the Charlie Tayler Waterwheel, set to music.

The town’s annual 3rd of July Celebration at the SEWC Fairgrounds will include a selection of food trucks this year. There will also be bouncy houses, balloon artists and face painting for the kids.

Fire Up The Cliffs on the 4th

The Kremmling Town Square will host fireworks at dark (after 9 p.m.) with a celebration in the park with live music, food and a beer garden.

Celebration June 29th

This ‘old fashioned Independence Day’ celebration is organized by the Lafayette Chamber of Commerce. The day features family-friendly activities, including free face painting, a performance by the 5280s Band, food trucks and a beer, cider and wine garden. The events run from 4 to 8:30 p.m. ending it a fireworks display at dusk.

The annual parade, games in the park, fireworks display and more take place at Lake City Town Park. From 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. there will be a street dance at Town Park with live music from Coal Creek Connection. Then at 9:30 p.m, fireworks begin from Memorial Park (weather permitting).

Big Belmar Bash on July 3 with drone light show at 9:15 p.m.

This community celebration starts at 5 p.m. and includes live music, kids' activities, local vendors, food and drinks. The gathering will take place throughout Belmar, including along South Teller Street and in the Belmar Plaza. The highlight of the night will be a drone light show, starting at approximately 9:15 p.m., rain or shine, featuring 300 drones with LED lights. Listen to the accompanying soundtrack on 100.3 FM or stream live from your phone. Note: Viewers south of Belmar Square Park will see the show in reverse.

July 4th festivities and fireworks

A Firecracker 5K fun run starts the day, followed by an old-fashioned parade down Harrison Avenue, Leadville’s main street. Along with the annual 4th of July Airport Cookout, there will be a Picnic and Planes event. The day concludes with fireworks at dusk, illuminating some of Colorado’s highest peaks, weather permitting.

The town celebrates Independence Day on July 1st at the Limon Public School, with vendors, food, music, kids activities and a watermelon roll. The festivities end with fireworks at dusk, around 9 p.m.

Red, White & You on July 3 with fireworks

The event starts in Clement Park at 5 p.m. with booths, a kids zone area, beer & wine gardens, and food vendors. At 7 p.m., attendees can take in a free concert featuring That Eighties Band in the amphitheater. The fireworks will start at 9:30 p.m., south of the amphitheater. Fireworks can be seen anywhere in the park. The show is weather and fire-ban dependent.

Independence Celebration with fireworks

The July 4th festivities start at 9 a.m. with a Family Fun Ride & Stroll, followed by a Family Fun Park with entertainment, food trucks and more. Online registration is required. Live music starts at 7 p.m., and fireworks begin at 9:30 p.m., visible from Prairie Sky Park and other spots in Lone Tree.

The annual fireworks show in Longmont will be at a new location this year - the Longmont Fire Training Center at 111 1st Avenue. Sponsored by Skyline Kiwanis, the fireworks will start after 9 p.m. and be complemented by a display from the St. Vrain Valley School District Drone Academy, sponsored by NextLight.

July 4th Festival with fireworks 

Celebrate Independence Day with music, entertainment, vendor booths and a fireworks show over Lake Loveland at North Lake Park. Vendors and food trucks will be open from 4 to 9 p.m. The Loveland Concert Band will perform at Hammond Amphitheater from 8 to 9:15 p.m., culminating with fireworks at 9:17 p.m.

Fireworks and Fourth of July celebrations at Coal Creek Golf Course include food trucks, bounce houses, face painting, and patriotic music. The fireworks launch at 9:30 p.m. from the golf course and can be seen from the sidewalks at the clubhouse and the tee boxes for the driving range.

The day begins with the Masonic Lodge Pancake Breakfast at 7 a.m. in the Downtown Plaza. Following that, there will be a parade down Main Street at 10 a.m., as well as many other events throughout the day. The fireworks display begins at dark, with great viewing available from the city park.

Independence Day Celebration July 3 and 4

On July 3rd, the Air Force Academy Band will perform at the Montrose Rotary Amphitheater at 6 p.m. The following morning, at 10 a.m., the Fourth of July parade starts at N. Pythian and proceeds down Main Street, concluding at N. Cascade Ave. The parade is followed by aday full of family activities and music, then a spectacular fireworks display at dusk.

The July 4th Festival at Northglenn's EB Rains Jr. Memorial Park includes a car show, bounce houses, community booths, food vendors and a beer garden starting at noon. Attendees can bring blankets and picnic baskets to secure a good spot for the annual fireworks show, which begins at dusk.

The day begins early with the 10k fun run known as Ourayce, followed by a parade and a flyover by Colorado Air National Guard. In an unusual twist, the parade has a dry side (the east side of Main Street) and a wet side (the west side). Choose the west if you want to get soaked by firefighters as they go by. And you can BYO water guns (no water balloons) if you want a shot at soaking them back. The fireworks show starts after dark, around 9:30.

Pagosa Springs

Last year, The Town of Parker introduced a remote-viewing fireworks display — meant to be watched from different spots around town — in place of a traditional, mass gathering show. The town is going with that format again this year, with fireworks launching from just north Salisbury Park. People can watch the show there, but parking is limited. However, according to residents, nearby open spaces with good viewing include Bar CCC Park, McCabe Meadows, Stroh Soccer Field and Tallman Meadow Park, as well as the Cherry Creek Trail. 

Falcon Freedom Days on June 29

Falcon Freedom Days returns this year, featuring local businesses, bounce houses, a DJ, and much more at the Falcon High School parking lot. Fireworks will be launched at 9:20 p.m. from an elevated site north of Falcon High School, making for great viewing from all over Falcon.

Rollin’ on the Riverwalk on July 4

Starting at 4 pm, celebrations along the Riverwalk will include boat rides, pedal boats, local food and retail booths and live music. Grizzly Gopher opens the entertainment, while headliner Triple Nickel plays up to the start of the fireworks show.

Pueblo West

Vintage 4th of July Celebration with fireworks

The full day of events includes a fun run, pancake breakfast and a water parade. From 2 to 8 p.m., visitors can explore a variety of vendors, food trucks and friendly games, with live music starting at 6 p.m. Fireworks are set for dusk near Civic Center Park. People can park their cars between Palmer Lake Drive and Civic Center Drive to see the show, or watch the display from Civic Center Park.

Silverton is marking its 150th anniversary — known as its sesquicentennial — this year, making these celebrations extra special. The day begins with an 8 a.m. blue ribbon 5k & 10k fun run. At 10:30, the parade steps off with the theme "Celebrating our past and present.” After the parade, the Silverton brass band concert plays on the courthouse lawn. In Memorial Park, there will be games and vendors, plus the annual ducky derby at 2 p.m. The day is capped off with fireworks at 9:30.

The Chamber of Commerce's summer event is billed as Old Fashioned 4th of July. Activities include horse and wagon rides, a bounce house, barbecue, live music and 4th of July parade. Fireworks at dusk.

The celebration starts with a parade at 3 p.m.. The South Fork Fire Department holds their annual Fish Fry and Ice Cream Social followed by the Rockin’ the Rio Grande Rodeo at 6:30 p.m. Check out the fireworks after dark (9:20 p.m.) from the golf course, although the show can be seen from just about anywhere in town. 

Enjoy live music, family activities, and local food trucks. Music starts at 6 p.m. At 9:30 p.m., the Tinmath reservoir will host a pyro-musical fireworks extravaganza.

4th of July with parachutists and fireworks

Carpenter Park Fields will have food, beer gardens, and two stages of entertainment, starting at noon. Parachutists will jump at 9:30 p.m., followed by a "Red, White & BOOM!" fireworks show at 9:30.

Vail Fourth of July Parade and Celebration with fireworks

The parade starts at 10 a.m. at Golden Peak on Vail Valley Drive, follows a route through town and wraps up around noon. The fireworks show starts at 9 p.m from Vail Mountain and can be seen from various locations around town with a clear view of the front side of Vail Mountain. Tune in to the Fireworks Show soundtrack on KZYR 97.7 on the radio or via streaming.

The day will start with a pancake breakfast at 7 a.m., followed by a parade at 10 a.m. There will be a beer garden and skate jam at Wellington Community Park from 10:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., and live music from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. The day will end with fireworks at 9:30 p.m.

Custer County’s Fourth of July celebration features a craft and flea market, pancake breakfast, parade, and a fireworks show put together by the Mortar Men. The fireworks will start at dark from the Mine Tailings in Silver Cliff, across from Tony’s Mountain Pizza.

Westminster

4th of July fireworks

Westminster City Park activities start at 4 p.m., with a concert at 7 p.m. and the fireworks go off at 9:15 p.m. There will be a free shuttle bus from various locations around Westminster.

Activities begin at 4 p.m. and the parade starts at 7 p.m. followed by fireworks at dusk.

Activities at Boardwalk Park begin at noon, featuring food trucks and vendors. The Greeley Philharmonic Orchestra will perform live music before the fireworks display from 7:15 p.m. to 9:15 p.m.

Woodland Park

July 4th festival and fireworks

The Independence Day celebrations run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. After enjoying watermelon and friendly competitions, visitors can find a comfortable spot in the park to set up a blanket or lawn chair and enjoy the free Symphony Above the Clouds. The gates open for the musical performance at 5 p.m.

Yuma’s fire department offers a ‘drive in’ fireworks show on July 3rd. Viewers are invited to park at Jeff Armstrong Ball Field and tailgate while they view the display. Fireworks will start at approximately 9 PM.

Colorado’s Aurora may give its camping ban more teeth in “tough love” approach to homelessness. Not everyone is on board

D ENVER — Wayne Wilkins has been homeless in Aurora for just over a year after failing to pay his $1,375 monthly rent at an apartment he used to lease in the city.

He now lives in a tent with his girlfriend — pitching it anywhere in Aurora where he thinks he will least likely be asked to move along. Last week, the couple slept in a field between Toll Gate Creek and the sprawling Rocky Mountain Regional VA Medical Center, with the roar of Interstate 225 just off to the east.

“We set up late in the afternoon and pack up first thing in the morning,” said Wilkins, who goes by the nickname Smokey.

While both Wilkins and his girlfriend have managed to avoid encounters with law enforcement, that may not be the case for much of Aurora’s homeless population in the coming months as elected leaders aim to toughen the city’s urban camping ban and decrease the number of tents that pop up.

It’s an approach to homelessness that integrates with other initiatives Aurora has launched, including a court created to specifically deal with those who have no roof over their heads and a soon-to-debut housing program that places conditions of employment on residency. Aurora’s work-first strategy contrasts with Denver’s, where a housing-first ethic infuses all of the city’s efforts to help the unhoused.

On Monday, the Aurora City Council will cast a final vote on an ordinance that eliminates the requirement that the city provide 72-hour notice to those camping illegally before disassembling and clearing their encampment. Backers of the measure say it’s too easy for people now to temporarily move down the street before reestablishing their camp where they were.

“In order to change behavior, we have to make it untenable to be on the street — or you are just going to stay there,” Aurora Mayor Mike Coffman said. “This is going to be a more aggressive approach.”

Aurora will target encampments — initially with plenty of no-camping and no-trespassing signs — in the I-225 corridor, though it could gradually expand enforcement to other parts of the city. Violations of the updated camping ordinance could result in sanctions ranging from a warning, a ticket or even arrest, depending on whether police find another crime being committed.

Coffman was the primary force behind the enactment of Aurora’s camping ban two years ago . He says elimination of the 72-hour warning doesn’t come without other measures being taken to help those unhoused find stability.

Earlier this month, the City Council established the HEART court — Housing Employment Assistance Recovery Team — in Aurora Municipal Court. It’s geared at individuals experiencing homelessness who have been charged with low-level, non-violent offenses, which the city says will hold “participants accountable while connecting them to assistance and service providers.”

And next year, a new regionwide navigation center is set to open in Aurora, providing beds and rooms to those without shelter in the former 255-room Crowne Plaza Hotel at 15500 E. 40th Ave. The city purchased the hotel and convention center in January for $26.5 million, using American Rescue Plan Act funds.

“It’s not good for you, it’s not good for the city, to have you on the street,” Coffman said. “This is a tough love approach.”

“Push people around faster”

But Councilwoman Alison Coombs said the new ordinance will do little to help people living on Aurora’s streets. She was one of three council members to vote against it on first reading nearly two weeks ago.

“The 72-hour notice gives people the choice of somewhere else to be,” she said. “All this is going to do is push people around faster.”

And farther out. While the city focuses on encampment hot spots along the I-225 corridor — on East Mississippi Avenue, East Iliff Avenue, Colfax Avenue and South Parker Road in particular — Coombs said people without housing will migrate to other parts of Aurora and away from their support networks.

“And that could make people experiencing homelessness harder to reach, harder to identify and harder to stay in touch with,” she said. “We don’t have shelter capacity to cover even the people that got counted in the Point In Time survey, which is widely acknowledged as an undercount.”

That survey, conducted on a single night in January 2023 , showed 572 people were without shelter in Aurora. The Metro Denver Homeless Initiative hasn’t yet released numbers from the 2024 count.

Cathy Alderman, public policy officer for the Colorado Coalition for the Homeless, said a housing-first approach — one that doesn’t come with a precondition like sobriety or a job — is what works best She worries that “putting up more barriers” for those living on the streets — like new restrictions or rules — will be counterproductive.

“Efforts to criminalize homelessness do nothing to solve homelessness,” she said. “It’s not just telling people they can’t be there — but telling them where they can be. Housing really needs to come first to provide the foundation for everything else.”

Aurora is home to the Comitis Crisis Center , which has been providing beds to homeless people for years. More recently, the city added nearly 100 prefabricated Pallet shelters at two sites to provide additional living spaces for those who don’t have them. Aurora has two safe parking operations, where people living out of their vehicles can get respite for the night without having to worry about their safety.

Hundreds more shelter beds will come online next year when Aurora’s regional navigation center opens in the former Crowne Plaza Hotel space. The city also has a mobile outreach team that it deploys to make contact with those living on Aurora’s streets.

Councilman Steve Sundberg said the new ordinance, which he supports, is “not designed to be punitive in nature.” It’s meant to get people off the streets and out of city parks, he said, which belong to everyone in the city.

“Our goal is healing,” he said. “We want to hold people accountable to help them. We want to get people back into society and working again.”

It’s a basic safety measure to curtail the health hazards that go along with living outdoors, Sundberg said, like people “defecating in public view and trashing these areas.” Wildfires fueled by unattended campfires are also a concern.

“Should they be sleeping on the street two feet away from where traffic is going past at 50 mph?” he said. “I don’t think so.”

Coupled with the new navigation center’s emphasis on providing private rooms exclusively to adults who are looking for work or engaged in job training, Coffman calls Aurora’s approach a “work-first” model. It could make for an interesting test case versus the housing-first approach neighboring Denver embraces, he said.

“Putting someone in a hotel room who’s suffering from addiction or mental health issues without any requirements just doesn’t make sense to me,” Coffman said. “In exchange for public assistance, someone should be doing something affirmative to change their behavior.”

“We don’t want to be out here”

Denver Mayor Michael Johnston launched his homelessness initiative — then called House 1,000 — on his second day in office last July. So far, what’s now called All In Mile High has moved more than 1,620 people off the streets and into at least temporary shelter, according to city data , though nearly 200 of those people are listed as “no longer indoors.”

The Point In Time survey counted more than 5,800 people without shelter in Denver in January 2023.

Last week, Denver announced that, after start-up costs, the All In Mile High homelessness initiative will cost the city $57.5 million a year to run, which breaks down to nearly $29,000 per person based on an anticipated volume of 2,000 people served.

Cole Chandler, the mayor’s senior adviser on homelessness, touted the program as a “housing-first approach” that works. There are fewer encampments in Denver today than there were last summer, he said, when Johnston took office.

“Once they have a door to lock, some consistency in their lives — we find they are more successful once you take care of their basic needs,” Chandler said of the city’s homeless population. “What’s worked for us was providing an indoor option and a pathway to stability and supportive services. Yes, we need laws. Yes, we need teeth — but we also need indoor options for people.”

Daniel Brisson, executive director for the Center for Housing and Homelessness Research at the University of Denver, said “putting people to work is good.” But he worries that demanding too much of people who are in tenuous situations to begin with could lead to bad outcomes.

“Yeah, give me some notice so I can find a better place to be,” he said. “People who don’t have houses don’t have many choices. Testing ideas is really good — testing them humanely would probably be my biggest concern.”

Wilkins, aka Smokey, said he hopes he never has to be a part of that test. The 42-year-old North Carolina native said he is about to start a job at a cannabis dispensary in Aurora and is in line to get housing through the Aurora Housing Authority’s Rapid Re-Housing program.

That should pull him, and his 45-year-old girlfriend Tahneaa Estes, off the streets. Wilkins calls himself a “go-getter” who wants more than anything to have a job and a home.

“Not everybody is a bad person in their tent. Remember, we’re still human,” he said. “They don’t want us out here and we don’t want to be out here.”
