Top 10 Canoeing Vacations in Europe

We provide a variety of fully guided canoe trips, ranging from single-day paddles to week-long adventures. Our operations span approximately 300 km around Brussels, giving us access to various rivers, lakes, and marshlands in Belgium, the Netherlands, Germany, and France. Canoeing offers an excellent means to explore the unspoiled landscapes of the lowlands while providing prime opportunities for observing wildlife. It’s common to encounter deer, beaver, otter, eagles, osprey, coypu, and other fascinating creatures. The Meuse Valley River Park, stretching 40 kilometers and marking the natural boundary between Belgium and the Netherlands, stands as a significant achievement in ecological river restoration within Europe. Remarkably, it’s the only unaltered section of the Meuse in the Low Countries, free from extensive dikes and embankments. As you paddle, the Meuse meanders through diverse terrain, with ancient river branches, charming banks, meandering channels, and gravel bars.

Why choose Nature Travels for your canoeing holiday?

Canoeing has been one of our main summer activities since Nature Travels started in 2006. In that time, more than 4,000 guests have been canoeing in Sweden and Finland with us, from families with young children to miltiary adventurous training expeditions. Where will I stay on my canoe tour?

All our canoe tours feature camping on all nights. For some tours, this may be fully wild camping, in accordance with the guidelines of the Right of Public Access in Sweden or Finland. For other tours, there is a network of designated camping spots, which offer the advantage of facilities such as fireplaces/firewood, wind shelters and possibly even dry outside toilets.

Do I need previous experience?

With one exception (Rogen Wilderness Canoe Expedition), none of our canoe tours requires previous experience of canoeing.

However, the tours vary greatly in terms of level of physical challenge and remoteness, and for the more challenging tours it is certainly necessary to have previous experience of travelling independently in remote areas and a good level of physical fitness. See "Good To Know" under each tour page for more information on requirements for each of the canoe tours.

France is considered one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world. Many tourists are attracted by the culture, the good food, the beautiful cities and the diverse regions with their castles and fortresses for a vacation. In addition to numerous trips to France, we ourselves have explored several paddling destinations there in recent years and can now say that France is a real paddler’s paradise. In the following we would like to introduce you to the most beautiful regions of the country where it’s worth going kayaking or canoeing. Some of them we have paddled ourselves and tour reports with maps will help you with your planning. Other paddling regions should serve as inspiration.

Kayaking and Canoeing in France

Canoeing enjoys great popularity in France and attracts not only its own citizens but also many tourists who want to explore the country’s beautiful waters during a vacation in nature. It is mainly the beautiful rivers that make the country so attractive among paddling enthusiasts. Compared to the rivers in other countries like Germany, they are often left in their natural state, making a canoe trip a lot more relaxed (less portages ) and natural. Many of the popular rivers are located in the south of the country. Thus, you often have the good weather on a canoe trip also on the side. In Provence, whitewater rivers are waiting, flowing through gorges rarely found in Europe.

Lake chains are rather not found in France. Likewise, the largest lakes in the country cannot compete with other big lakes in Europe. The only candidate here is Lake Geneva (Lac Léman in French), which the French share with Switzerland. There are also plenty of opportunities for coastal paddling. Especially the Mediterranean Sea in the south is a true paradise for sea kayakers. Beautiful bays, azure waters and steep cliffs, such as those found near Marseille, definitely make for a unique paddling experience in good weather conditions.

Multi-day canoe trips in France

Especially on the popular rivers, numerous campsites have settled, which also specialize in canoe tourism. Canoe rental stations also often offer camping equipment and it is very typical that at the end of a tour you are brought back to the starting point by a shuttle bus.

Wild camping is generally not allowed in most parts of France, but is often tolerated in the wilderness. Thus, it is common to see canoeists pitching their tents on the riverbanks. Of course, you should always leave the place as you found it.

Even those who do not like camping are well served in France. Idyllic accommodations with equally beautiful hotels and guesthouses await you along many stretches of river. A tour like this is really fun if you round off the evening with a visit to a restaurant to enjoy French cuisine.

Paddling with kids in France

For families with children, the country offers the best conditions. Good weather in the south allows swimming fun for the little ones and the numerous campsites have also adapted to families. Thus, most campsites have playgrounds, swimming pools, restaurants and a small grocery stores. Especially in the rural areas you can also find many affordable accommodations.

In addition, the country is quite densely populated and you are never really in isolated wilderness. If the worst comes to the worst, the next town or village is never too far away. Another big advantage are the mostly natural rivers. Especially the annoying portage for families can be completely avoided here.

Best time to go kayaking in France

In the south of the country, thanks to the Mediterranean climate, summer comes early and goes late. Above all, you should try to avoid the French school vacations, because the French also like to be on the rivers with their families for a canoe trip. In the south of France, the rivers often have very little water in high summer, which makes canoeing easier for inexperienced paddlers due to the lower currents. On the other hand, you will have to tow or carry your canoe in places where the water is too shallow. We recommend May and September as ideal travel months for the south of France. For the rest of the country, paddling is most fun in the summer outside the vacation season.

Ardèche – One of the most popular white water spots in Europe

The 27 km (16.8 miles) long Ardeche Gorge is the spot for whitewater sports par excellence in France. The river is also ideal for beginners in whitewater sports and sporty touring paddlers. That’s why there are numerous boat rentals at different places in the gorge.

At vacation times and in high summer, when the water level is quite low, the region is crowded with tourists. In spring until the end of May you can still travel relatively quietly by kayak. The highlight of this tour is without a doubt the famous Pont d’Arc rock passage.

We have already kayaked through the Ardeche Gorge twice and we are sure that it was not the last time. We did the first tour in May and there were some wild spots that were really fun. The second tour we did in July and the river had a nice current to go fast but there were no wild passages. Therefore, anyone who does not like it so wild, but still wants to marvel at the beautiful scenery from a kayak, should rather plan a tour later in the summer.

If you want to have the river for yourself a little bit, you should ideally use your own boat or see if a rental company gives out a boat very early in the morning. Because the masses come only in the later morning.

Dordogne – Paddling along picturesque villages, chateaux and castles

The Dordogne is a 490 km (305 miles) long river in the southwest of France. For paddling, the 150 km (93 miles) long section between Argentat and Limeuil is particularly interesting. The river is largely natural there and you don’t have to portage the boat at any point, as there are boat slides at weirs for this purpose. Especially for families with children the Dordogne valley is an excellent paddling region. There are numerous campsites along the route, the water is quite tame in summer and early autumn and there is really a lot to discover along the banks. Besides really beautiful villages, countless castles and chateaus await and there is even a cave or two.

The Dordogne is highly recommended for canoe trips lasting several days. It is so varied that one can never get bored. But if you have only one day for a paddle, you should paddle the section between Vitrac and Beynac. Here you can discover beautiful nature, idyllic villages and the most famous castles of the region within a short time. For such a day trip, however, it is better to avoid the vacations and weekends, as this route is very popular and accordingly very busy.

Gard – In the footsteps of the Romans

Nature is actually in the foreground of every paddling tour, but it is different on a tour on the Gardon. The highlight of this tour is the Roman aqueduct Pont du Gard, one of the best preserved bridges of the Roman Empire. The Pont du Gard is one of the most popular destinations in the south of France and there is nothing more beautiful to explore this historic structure from the water.

Since canoeing is a favorite pastime of many French people, there are many rental kayaks and canoes on the river during the vacations, which preferably head for the Pont du Gard. With your own inflatable canoe or folding boat, you can paddle to the historic bridge even after the rush hours and thus take in the surroundings at your leisure. Similar to the Ardeche Gorge, the water level is also quite low in high and late summer.

The canoe trip can be ideally combined with visits to some beautiful French cities. Nîmes, Avignon and Arles are in the immediate vicinity, all of which have their own charm and are well worth a visit.

Les Calanques – Mediterranean Coastal Paddling

For many French people, Les Calanques National Park is one of the most beautiful coastal regions in the country. High chalk cliffs, narrow bays and azure waters paint a picture of a paradisiacal landscape, which one associates with the Mediterranean.

Most tourists come to the national park for a hiking tour. We have also made numerous hiking tours in the national park and can only recommend a hike there to you. It is simply a unique experience to hike along such a beautiful coast and to rest in one of the beautiful bays.

In ideal weather conditions, which means no waves and stable weather conditions, the coast is suitable for wonderful sea kayak tours. The many small bays with their beaches invite you to stay.

If you are ambitious, you can paddle the entire national park from the coast, as we did. You start in the small harbor town of Cassis and head towards Marseille. We ended our tour directly in the old harbor “Vieux Port” of Marseille. On the way there are imposing rock formations and numerous bays, which entice you to stop and swim. In Cassis and Marseille there are also kayak rental stations. If you don’t want to paddle the whole route from Cassis to Marseille, you can also do only a part of it. However, it is recommended to start in Cassis, because from there you can reach the more impressive bays faster. A comfortable day trip in this case would be the route Cassis to Calanque d’en Vau.

Verdon – The Grand Canyon of France

The Verdon is an alpine river in southern France and is also called the Grand Canyon of France. No wonder, with chalk cliffs, which are up to 700 m (2300 feet) high, the gorge offers impressive scenery. Five dams have already been built here for energy production and flood protection, which means that nowadays some parts of the gorge have been “swallowed up” by these reservoirs.

Nevertheless, the region is a popular destination for many tourists, who use the reservoirs for summer bathing and go hiking and climbing in the gorge. The lakes are just as inviting for a leisurely canoe trip and parts of the Verdon Gorge are also easily navigable. In addition to good weather that you should bring, it is important that you find out in advance when from the hydroelectric power the flood wave is sent into the Verdon.

Lac d’Annecy – A mountain lake with alpine scenery

Among paddling enthusiasts, it is mainly the rivers that the country has to offer. Nevertheless, there are also some beautiful lakes that invite you to a day trip. The alpine lake Lac d’Annecy is a very good example here and is one of our favorite lakes in France. Since the lake is fed by mountain rivers with drinking water quality and no runoff is discharged into the lake, the lake is one of the cleanest waters in Europe.

On the north shore is the town of Annecy, which can be easily reached by train. The place is famous for paragliding. But it is equally worthwhile to explore the area by kayak from the water. The 14.6 km (9.1 miles) long lake offers beautiful views of the southern mountain panorama. Since it is an alpine lake, you should pay attention to good weather conditions, because it can also quickly become wavy and uncomfortable on the lake in wind and storm.

Around the lake there are very beautiful hiking trails that you can also explore. So you can hike up one of the mountains to admire the lake from a height. A bike ride along the lake is also a lot of fun, which you can rent at one of the many rental shops in Annecy.

Sorgue – canoe trip near the source

The Sorgue is known for its emerald waters in large parts of France. Ideally, you start your tour from the Fontaine de Vaucluse, where the river rises. It is about 8 km (5 miles) to the small town of L’Isle sur la Sorgue, so it is also perfect for families. Depending on the season and the amount of rain, the water level can vary greatly. Especially during dry periods in summer it is possible that the river has water only further downstream.

There are kayak stations near the Fontaine de Vaucluse, which also receive the boats back at the destination point and organize the return transport to the starting point.

The water is so crystal clear in many places that you can see right down to the bottom even in very deep places and observe the fish life. The river is mostly overgrown with trees and wild bushes and therefore offers enough shade on the water even on hot summer days.

Loire – An endless natural river

With a length of more than 1000 km (620 miles), the Loire is the longest river in France. The beautiful and special thing about this hiking river is that it is largely natural. Thus, the Loire divides at various points in several river arms, thus forming beautiful islands that are very popular with paddlers as a place to rest and spend the night. On the banks, sandy beaches, forests, fields and, of course, numerous castles await.

The upper course of the Loire is a real white water with class III-V and originates in the Massif Central. The middle course with class WW II is no problem for experienced river paddlers and the current ensures fast progress. The lower course of the river is characterized by a calm current and is also ideal for paddling beginners and families. The Loire is the ideal river for camping enthusiasts, because here you can paddle several weeks without any problems.

Hereford to Symonds Yat

The River Wye is great for a multi-day journey, and the section between Hereford and Symonds Yat is just perfect for a family paddle. This epic journey between the west and east coasts of Scotland runs through the spectacular Great Glen loch and river system, which also includes the legendary Loch Ness. Taking five days or more, and wild camping on route, the Great Glen Canoe Trail can be tackled by the unexperienced, but isn’t advised for young children, as days are long and if the weather comes in, cold too. Canoe the Klarälven

Traveller's Guide: Canoe & kayak holidays in Europe

"In walking you are bounded by every sea and river, and in a common sailing boat you are bounded by every shallow and shore; whereas a canoe [can] be paddled or sailed, or hauled, or carried over land or water". So wrote pioneering paddler John "Rob Roy" MacGregor in his 1866 book A Thousand Miles in the Rob Roy Canoe, summing up the early attraction of canoe adventures.

MacGregor, a barrister who discovered canoeing on a trip to North America, is credited with popularising the sport across Europe, and with developing the idea of sailing canoes, which had more space for equipment and enabled longer journeys to be made. In MacGregor's case these included navigations of the Rhine, Danube and Seine rivers, and a jaunt through the Suez Canal.

The collections at the National Maritime Museum in Falmouth, Cornwall (01326 313 388; nmmc.co.uk) include an original "Rob Roy" canoe from 1869, though it's not currently on display. What is – until September when it will be repatriated to Canada – is one of the world's oldest birch bark canoes. Recently found resting in a barn on a Cornish estate, the canoe is thought to be 250 years old, having been brought to the UK by a local soldier who fought in the American War of Independence.An even older canoe, a 10,000-year-old dugout, will take pride of place at the Drents Museum (00 31 592 377 773; drentsmuseum.nl) in Assen, Netherlands when it re-opens this autumn.

Before you explore the sport rather than its history, get the terminology right. The word "canoe" derives from the Carib word "canoa" or "cenu" and means an open vessel – sometimes termed a "Canadian" canoe. Kayak is an Inuit word, meaning dugout, even though modern-day kayaks are enclosed. To sum up: canoes are larger, open-topped and powered by a single-ended paddle while kayaks are smaller, closed and powered by a double-ended paddle.

Kayaking and canoeing trips vary from calm paddling on lakes and canals to racing down white water or powering through the waves on open water. While many holidays are open to complete beginners, it can really pay to practise before you go. The British Canoe Union (BCU) is the main point of contact for the sport in the UK (0845 370 9500; bcu.org.uk). An umbrella organisation for Canoe England, Canoe Wales, the Canoe Association of Northern Ireland and the Scottish Canoe Association, the BCU is the place to start if you want to find a club or centre near your home where you can get to grips with this exciting passtime.

Once you're ready to head off onto the water, one of the first choices you'll make is whether to opt for a trip by kayak or by canoe. Despite the obvious differences between the two, both can be used for a wide range of trips. Open canoes, however, hold more equipment so are better for longer touring trips; kayaks, being lighter, nippier and sealed, are well suited for short ventures into choppier waters.

North America remains fantastic territory for open canoes, but there are plenty of places to have a go closer to home. Wilderness Scotland (0131 625 6635; wildernessscotland.com ) runs three-night descents of the River Spey in open canoes. Costing from £445 per person, these include equipment, camping, meals, guiding and transport from and to Aviemore train station.

For a quick taster of canoeing to see if it is for you, several operators in the UK hire out open canoes by the half-day, including Wye Valley Canoes (01497 847213; wyevalleycanoes.co.uk ) situated just outside Hay-on-Wye in Powys, Wales. Here, two to three-hour trips meandering gently downstream cost just £20 per person, including all the equipment and pick-up by minibus at an agreed finish point.

An ocean wave

Sea kayaking can be as calm as river or lake kayaking but often it's a bit more challenging, and definitely warrants some pre-trip instruction.

The BCU's sea touring committee is a good source of information on local clubs and courses ( seakayaking.org.uk ).

If you'd rather learn on holiday, Ridgway Adventure (01971 521006; ridgway-adventure.co.uk ) in Scotland's northwest Highlands, runs excellent kayaking trips, from weekend trips for adults (from £355 per person for three nights) to longer family trips that involve time spent learning to kayak, as well as abseiling, raft building and other outdoor pursuits (from £480 per child and £580 per adult, for six nights). Both include full-board accommodation, equipment and instruction.

Regular sea kayakers might prefer to look to Northern Ireland, where the new North Coast Canoe Trail will be launching next month. Stretching from Magilligan to Waterfoot, past highlights such as the Giant's Causeway, it's set to be a great DIY trail for paddlers with existing sea kayaking experience ( canoeni.com ).

Borea Adventures (00 354 869 7557; boreaadventures.com ) is launching new "Hot Pools" kayaking trips in Iceland this year. Five-day trips explore the dramatic shores of the westfjords region, with evenings spent relaxing in natural hot pools. Trips cost from £805 per person for departures in July and August, including tents, food, equipment and guiding but not flights.

If you'd rather kayak in sunnier climes, Original Travel (020-7978 7333; originaltravel.co.uk ) offers the chance to paddle along Croatia's lovely Dalmatian Coast. Four-night trips cost from £798 per person, including accommodation, equipment, transfers and flights. Further south, there's Turkey's turquoise coast. Join one of the sea kayaking day trips offered by Bougainville Travel (00 90 242 836 3737; bt-turkey.com ), which involve paddling over ancient ruins submerged beneath the water around Kekova island, east of Kas. These cost from €30 per person, including guiding, equipment and transport from Kas or Kalkan.

Natural highs

Canoeing is a quiet, carbon-friendly way of getting around. Some proponents also believe that by being close to the water but tucked inside a craft, canoeists trick surrounding wildlife into believing they're "one of them", allowing them to get closer to birds and animals than they otherwise would.

Jurassic Kayak Tours (01305 835301; jurassic-kayaking.com ) in Dorset runs day trips around the Jurassic Coast that take nature-loving paddlers into caves and through arches that couldn't be accessed by bigger boats. The trips, which often go beneath the rock arch of Durdle Door, cost £50 per person for three hours. In neighbouring Devon, the Torbay Coast and Countryside Trust (01803 606035; countryside-trust.org.uk ) is running one-day ranger-led "Canoe the Coves" trips round the English Riviera Geopark this summer. Aimed at introducing visitors (over-12s only) to wildlife and coastal geology, the trips take place on 2 June, 22 July and 10 August and cost £45 per person.

Meanwhile Atlantic Sea Kayaking (00 353 282 1058; atlanticseakayaking.com ) in West Cork is known for night tours, where kayakers paddle over shimmering puffs of phosphorescence in an inland lake. They also offer seaweed foraging trips and nature safaris. One of its most popular trips at this time of year is a special dawn chorus tour taking kayakers out to enjoy birdsong before breakfast (€45 per person.)

Sweden (above) is great territory for nature-based trips. Nature Travels (01929 463774; naturetravels.co.uk ) runs a wide range of trips, from one-day sea kayaking in the Stockholm archipelago (£98 per person) to seven-day self-guided kayaking and wild camping trips in the country's High Coast (from £402 per person, including transfers and kayaks but not camping equipment or flights) and two-nighters that take in the Koster Archipelago, Sweden's first national marine park in 2009 (from £383 per person, including everything except flights).

Finally, several trips for families include kayaking as part of a week's package and are a great introduction to paddling. In France, Ardèche Adventures (020-8123 0076; ardecheadventures.com ) offers one-week "Family Adventures" costing £425 per adult and £325 per child, including kayaking through the Ardèche gorge. In July and August, the holidays include five days of activities, with instruction and equipment, but not transport or accommodation; the latter can be booked for an additional fee.

Paddling up an appetite

Fancy canoeing, rather than singing, for your supper? In Devon, Wild Wise (01803 868269; wildwise.co.uk ) is running "Wild Foods by Canoe" foraging day trips in April and September, for £65 per person. Starting and ending in Totnes, the trips will explore some of the more inaccessible places to find local, seasonal plants and teach participants different ways to prepare and cook them. If you're new to the game and want to try it out before buying kit, various operators offer specialist day trips. These include Jersey Kayak Adventures (07797 853033; jerseykayakadventures.co.uk ) whose kayak fishing trips (below) cost £45 per person, including all the equipment.

Urban kayaking

Canoeing may be associated with country, but it's also a great way to do some urban sightseeing. From the water you get a different perspective, and it's a relaxing way to take in the sights. Some of the best include Kajak Ole (00 45 40 50 40 06; kajakole.com ) in Copenhagen, which offers 90-minute trips from DK245 (£28) per person; Thames River Adventures (020-8361 3009; thamesriveradventures.co.uk ), which does hour-long trips from £49.99 per person; and Venice Kayak (00 39 346 477 1327; venicekayak.com ), which runs full-day tours from €120.

The 10 Best Canoe Trips (For Your World Travel Bucket List)

Mention the word “paddle” to most people and you may get references to “being up the creek without one,” the movie Deliverance , or corporal punishment handed out at Catholic schools in their childhood.

But when I hear the word “paddle,” it immediately conjures up indelible images from my favorite canoe trips around the world.

It brings up warm memories of mist coming off the shore at dawn. The calls of a loon or howler monkey reverberating throughout the surrounding wilderness.

The only human-made sound the “swish-plop” of a paddle as you propel your canoe (or kayak) along the river or across the lake.

It was paddling that introduced me to my first real travel adventure several decades ago in Ontario’s Haliburton Highlands. And, truth be told, I’ve been totally hooked on the hobby ever since.

These are my personal picks for the 10 Best Canoe Trips in the World, and I feel like I’ve barely touched the tip of the iceberg …

Bowron Lakes (British Columbia)

I used Bowron Lakes Provincial Park ‘s wilderness canoe circuit as a “relationship litmus test” the first summer I was dating a girl.

I figured if we were still speaking after a 4-day canoe trip, it would be a good sign. More than 25 years later, we’re still paddling together!

Set in the Cariboo Mountains of central B.C. amid gorgeous scenery, this 72-mile long, rectangular circuit of lakes and rivers is a great one for beginners.

The Cariboo River can be a bit tricky in spots . B ut if you pay attention it shouldn’t cause any grief, as there’s no whitewater. 

All the lakeshore campsites include bear caches for food. There are n’ t too many portages, and you can rent wheels that attach to the bottom of your canoe and roll it down the trails, which include boardwalks along rough, boggy sections.

We paddled it in 4.5 days, but you might want to allow a week for maximum enjoyment of the surrounding scenery.

Everglades National Park (Florida)

Although a good portion of Everglades National Park is swampland, there is a section that offers a different kind of paddling.

In the Ten Thousand Islands, you can kayak in and around a series of small islands on the Gulf of Mexico, camping, soaking up the sun and watching the wildlife that lives there.

During a trip there, I was lucky enough to see a rookery of young herons being fed by adults and watched a dolphin swim under my kayak and breach the surface right behind me. I also observed two ospreys in an aerial battle, and fought to keep the island’s persistent raccoons from stealing food right out of our kayaks!

The sunsets in the Everglades can be spectacular. I’ll never forget watching it set on the ocean at one end, while seeing the silhouette of a cruise ship far off in the distance at the other.

But it can be easy to get lost in the myriad canals and tributaries here. So it’s best to travel with a guide from a reputable tour company.

Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge (Georgia)

Referred to as “the swamp” by locals, Okefenokee National Park is another great place to see wildlife.. .  as long as you don’t mind keeping company with alligators.

There are a lot of alligators in the swamp. You can see them sunbathing on hummocks of swamp grass or even swimming underneath the wooden platforms you have to camp on . They generally don’t bother anybody unless you get too close.

But gators aren’t the only wildlife you’ll likely see there: Black bears call the Okefenokee home, as do white-tail deer, ospreys, herons, woodpeckers, hawks, and sandhill cranes.

Although you can paddle your own canoe or kayak through here– and many locals do– your best bet is to book an experienced outfitter to keep from getting lost.

Several outfitters guide day trips , but there are only a few that lead overnight canoeing and/or kayaking adventures.

Belize Barrier Reef (Belize)

Belize offers novice kayakers a great opportunity to enjoy paddling, sun, sand, snorkeling and culture. This was where my first kayak trip took place after years of paddling a canoe, and it was a great experience.

During the 5-day trip, we camped on three different islands. The first was a nameless mangrove island. which I dubbed “Crab Cay” because of all the hermit crabs roaming around.

The next was a larger island named Laughingbird Cay. Lastly, there was a group of islands known as the Silk Cays, which are just a short paddle away from the Belize Barrier Reef (the second largest reef in the world, and a UNESCO World Heritage Site) .

The snorkeling and Scuba diving there is fantastic, with all kinds of cool coral and multitudes of exotic-looking fish, including reef squid and the occasional barracuda. You may even be lucky enough to see a spotted ray, or perhaps a harmless reef shark.

Our base camp was near Placencia, a center of Garifuna culture , which features a conch-shell sidewalk and a bar/post office to visit before or after your kayak trip.

The Amazon (South America)

There’s still debate about what river is the world’s longest, but South America’s Amazon River is the largest in terms of total discharge.

While it is threatened by logging and other business interests, the Amazon still encompasses the world’s largest continuous cover of tropical rainforest.

Though I haven’t paddled on the actual Amazon, I did a canoe trip in a section of the Ecuadorian Amazon known as the Orienté, on a tributary called Rio Shiripuno.

Although wildlife abounds there, seeing it in the jungle is not easy. Still, we did see a caiman, several parrots, toucans, a harpy eagle and tracks of what looked like a jaguar along the muddy banks of the river.

The 5-day trip was led by Moi, chief of the Huaorani, the indigenous people on whose land we camped each night as part of our journey. And there’s nothing quite like the sound of a howler monkey waking you up for a pre-dawn photo excursion.

Boundary Waters Canoe Area (Minnesota)

Located on the border of northeastern Minnesota and the southwest border of northwestern Ontario, the Boundary Waters Canoe Area is considered the canoe mecca of North America.

Consisting of thousands of lakes, rivers, marshes and woodlands, and home to all the diverse wildlife that lives in the boreal forest, it has been on my bucket list for years.

Part of the park’s northern boundary borders on Ontario’s  Quetico Provincial Park , creating a huge international reserve of pristine wilderness that’s accessible from either country.

It’s very similar to the way that Glacier National Park and Waterton National Park meet on the Montana-Alberta border. This makes it an excellent area for paddlers to explore.

Okavango Delta (Botswana)

If you’re an avid paddler, but want to experience the wild adventure of an African safari , this canoe trip is the answer to your prayers.

The Okavango Delta is the largest inland delta in the world. Most river deltas lead to the open sea, or at least a large lake. But the Okavango River empties onto open land and floods the savannah.

The area is home to several highly endangered species, including cheetahs, white and black rhinos, and African wild dogs… which is probably why it’s a protected UNESCO World Heritage Site .

There are plenty of eco lodges and traditional safaris available for visitors to enjoy in this area. Some even offer native-powered dugout canoe rides through portions of the wetland.

Mekong River (Southeast Asia) 

If you want to “kayak like Kurtz,” the Mekong River is your best bet for trying to channel your inner Marlon Brando.

While the Mekong River is not the Nung, Asia’s seventh longest river does wind through six countries– Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand and China.

You can paddle past ancient temples, and many villages unchanged by the centuries. You can also paddle on Ha Long Bay and visit Cambodia’s Angkor Wat, another UNESCO World Heritage Site .

While there is plenty to do on a trip like this, you probably won’t run across any surfers playing “Ride of the Valkyries.” And you definitely don’t want to shoot any tigers. Just be careful about stepping out of the boat without your guide!

Vava’u Islands (Tonga)

This is another kayak trip that’s been on my bucket list for a while now.

Dreams of Vava’u ‘s crystal clear waters, sparkling sand beaches and hidden marine caves, combined with the chance of seeing whales and dolphins while plying the warm South Pacific waters, tug at my spray skirt in an enticing manner.

Then there’s the rich traditional Polynesian culture , with umu feasts and hula dancing on the beach as the sun goes down.

If that’s not enough, there’s excellent snorkeling on all of the islands you visit . It’s kind of like Tonga’s version of kayaking off the coast of Belize.

KERALA (INDIA)

The backwaters of Kerala is another exotric destination that I’ve dreamt of exploring by canoe for several years now.

The Kerala region of India is known for its restful spas and healing waters. But you can also kayak or canoe through its world-renowned backwaters, which can make a great experience even greater.

In addition to paddling, you can also enjoy various Kerala tours focused on bird watching, fishing,  and other activities. You will have plenty of opportunities to make new friends with the villagers you meet along the way.

Namyak Namibia, a tour operator based in a community crafts shop in the centre of Swakopmund, offers kayak trips in the bay. Canoeing among the seals in the early morning is a joyous experience: the seals surround the canoes and leap across the bows, while the pups look up at you like labradors waiting for a stick to be thrown. The dolphins are a little more circumspect, but will swim alongside, weaving this way and that only so long as you paddle furiously enough to keep up with them.

Exhilarating as paddling across Lake Malawi is, it’s important from time to time just to sit still and allow the waters around you to become calm. When that happens, it’s like peering down into a giant aquarium, filled with fish of every conceivable colour. The cichlids alone, of which Lake Malawi has six hundred species, are so dazzlingly various that they are sometimes given the name peacock fish.

Kayak Africa, based in laid-back Cape Maclear, employs fishermen from the nearby village of Chembe as guides, to share their lifetime’s understanding of the lake and the many islets and caves that line its shore. Accommodation is at exclusive bushcamps on either Mumbo or Domwe, otherwise deserted tropical islands so picture-perfect that the urge is to play Robinson Crusoe and not come home. Spend a few evenings on the empty beach, enjoying your freshly caught dinner and watching the lights from the fishermen’s boats flicker on the darkening horizon, and that feeling will only get stronger.

Paddling through the vast Danube delta, almost 3000km from where the river began in Germany’s Black Forest, offers the chance to combine some of the best birdwatching in Europe with visits to communities little touched by industrialization. Each spring hundreds of species ranging from spoonbills to warblers migrate here from the southern hemisphere, when the area’s vast silence is broken by their songs and mating calls. In the autumn, huge flocks again gather here to prepare for the long journey south. On canoe trips with Barefoot Tours through this vast maze of channels, forests, sand dunes and reeds, you’ll have the advantage of approaching on the water almost noiselessly, enabling you to get close to the birds without disturbing them or their habitat.

Much has been written about the celebrity highlife of Sardinia’s Costa Smeralda, as well as the island’s traditional cuisine and its distinctive character and customs. Less well known is that Sardinia has some of the best-conserved coastline in the Mediterranean, thanks to government legislation that bans building property within 2km of the sea around the entire island.

One of the best ways to enjoy Sardinia’s coastline is by sea kayak. Away from the hum of the pleasure boats, paddling under your own steam, you can reach some of the island’s most unspoilt beaches. In particular, the protected islands of the Maddalena Archipelago in the Straits of Bonifacio between Corsica and northeastern Sardinia provide excellent conditions for an island-hopping kayaking adventure. There are seven main islands (five are uninhabited) and over fifty islets around which you can paddle for days in warm, translucent water, searching for that ideal spot to land along the wind-blown granite coastline – home to gulls, cormorants and herons.

Little Loch Broom Scotland

The protected sandy beaches and shallow shores of the Summer Isles are perfect places to land a kayak and pitch a tent for the night. If you like the idea, canoeing tours organized by Wilderness Scotland make for an excellent choice: there can’t be many trips that leave so little trace behind them.

The journey begins and ends at Inverness train station, where you’re taken by minibus across the northwest of Scotland to Achiltibuie, the launchpad to the Summer Isles. Paddling 12–14km daily for five days, guests are led along the rugged coastline of this remote archipelago, under sea arches and over water surges between narrow channels of rocks. You pass the dramatic sandstone cliffs of Eilean Flada Mar and its outlying skurries, the dramatic peaks of Assynt, the island of Eilean Mullagrach and the wildlife reserve of Isle Ristol. Along the way, you may see dolphins, whales, seals and a huge variety of birds, including golden eagles. After setting up camp late in the afternoon on one of the many islands, dinner is prepared and eaten in a communal tipi before retiring to your tent under a clear night’s sky.

Over fifty million migratory birds visit Estonia each year, with many rare species – like the velvet scoter and red-breasted merganser – settling on the country’s northern islands to breed. These wildlife havens were the chance consequence of Soviet deportations in the 1950s to allow military tests to take place: when the locals were forced out, the birds began to move in.

You can explore this twitcher’s paradise on guided kayak tours with Reimann Retked, an adventure-holiday specialist certified by the Estonian Ecotourism Association. You can paddle from island to island, approaching the birds without disturbing them, or leave the canoes onshore and hike over the flat scrubland. The latter can be somewhat eerie, as these islands are still dotted with crumbling farmhouses and deserted Soviet watchtowers, half-rusted by the salty air. Covered in white gulls against a setting sun, though, they make for a great photograph.

As your guide paddles out of the dim, stalagtite-filled cave and onto the shimmering lake, the air fills with the roar of the distant Dau Dang waterfall. On all sides the tree-covered limestone cliffs loom overhead, their dense vegetation seeming to merge into the jade-coloured water. You’re a long way north of Hanoi and it feels like it.

Canoeing on the tranquil Ba Be Lakes with Footprints Vietnam (an operator staffed by local Vietnamese that works directly with the villages you visit) is a nature retreat like few others. Ba Be means “three seas” – a reference to the three natural lakes that spread over an area 7km long and 1km wide – and three-day boat trips on this wide expanse of water typically stop by caves and waterfalls, and include a stay in the homes of the Tay people who live beside the lake. The Tay, most of whom are farmers or fishermen, live in houses on stilts perched over the edge of the water – and it’s in one of these that you’ll eat and sleep, looking out over the bamboo-lined lake as fishermen pass by at dusk in their wooden canoes.

The ultimate guide about the major airports in Brussels

Brussels is home to two major airports that serve the busy city. Though both are international, they vary in size, amenities, and specialties, so there are several factors that can help you decide which of the Brussels airports is the right choice for your trip. Here’s what to consider when choosing between Brussels Airport – Zaventem (BRU) and Brussels South Charleroi Airport (CRL).

Brussels Airport – Zaventem (BRU) is the capital’s primary airport and by far the larger of the two. Many ask if Brussels National Airport is the same as Zaventem, and it is. The airport goes by many nicknames, including Brussels-Zaventem, Brussels Airport and Brussels-National. Because BRU is large and handles the majority of Brussels departures, security lines can be a bit longer here, so it’s important to follow recommended airport arrival times .

BRU is only about 7.5 miles from the Brussels city center. You can typically make this journey by taxi in under 20 minutes, making it my preferred method for maximum convenience at a reasonably low cost. Still, several public transportation options are available from this well-connected airport, including both trains and buses. They’re efficient, inexpensive, and quick, with buses taking around 30 minutes and trains as little as 15. If you prefer to drive yourself, there are several rental options available at the airport .

Typical flights from BRU

Brussels Airport is the hub for national flag carrier Brussels Airlines, and is a major airport for many other full-service airlines too. While these more upscale airlines tend to make flights more expensive on average at BRU, there are still some lower cost carriers that use the airport and many domestic flights operate from here too.

Lounge facilities

While the number of lounges at Brussels Airport isn’t staggering – there are just four – they’re all better appointed with more seating, services, and food options than those at CRL. Two of these are operated by Brussels Airlines and require same-day tickets on the airlines in addition to an entry fee, but you can buy entry to either of the two Diamond Lounges regardless of airline. Some airlines provide access to the Diamond Lounges with certain fare classes, but note that Priority Pass no longer offers entry to these. The superior lounge scene at BRU can make it a better choice than CRL for business travelers, but I find all of the lounges here a bit lacking, so it’s not worth basing a decision on this alone.

Visit the city center on a layover

Because Brussels Airport is so close to the city center, it’s easy to fit in some sightseeing on a layover of around three hours or more. If it’s your first visit to the city, I strongly recommend heading straight for the Grand-Place to admire the gilded guildhalls of this UNESCO World Heritage site and the bustle in the square between them, which often includes markets earlier in the day.

In the same area you’ll find amusing street art through the surrounding alleys. With a bit more time, you can also squeeze in the European Quarter and consider touring the European Parliament. Heading out during a connection is a great way to make the best use of your time, but be sure you understand what leaving the airport during a layover entails first.

Brussels South Charleroi Airport (CRL), often simply called Charleroi, is significantly smaller than BRU and therefore offers fewer services for fewer passengers. Still, it remains the second busiest airport in the country and welcomes more than eight million annual passengers. While luxury may be a bit harder to come by here, CRL still offers a full range of amenities, including lounges, dining, shopping, and services like car rentals, Wi-Fi and currency exchange. Charleroi Airport is considerably further from the Brussels city center than BRU. A drive will typically take between 45 minutes to an hour for the roughly 30-mile journey, and there is an inexpensive shuttle bus that completes the route in about an hour. It takes a bit of extra time and effort to reach the city from Charleroi Airport, but the inexpensive nature of average flights here makes it especially appealing to budget travelers, or those hopping around multiple cities. Typical flights from CRL

CRL is an international airport, but it primarily hosts low-cost and budget airlines like Wizz Air and Ryanair. Because it’s further from the city, this is a great airport for low-cost connecting flights with layovers, when you don’t intend to journey into Brussels anyway. But it's also a great choice for quick getaways like weekend trips, when maximizing your budget may be more important than airport and airline amenities.

Layover lounging

Though facilities are fewer and less luxurious at CRL, there are still two lounges here. You’ll find one in each of the airport’s two terminals, but only for flights remaining in the Schengen Zone (a free-travel collection of many European countries eliminating border control measures like passport checks). The Lounge (yes, that’s the official name of both) does offer a more comfortable place to rest, but I don’t find it worth the cost of entry. Though the fee is less than most airline or airport lounges charge, snacks here are often limited to generic grab-and-go items like whole fruit and small bags of chips and granola bars.

A local bite at CRL

Most of the food and beverage options at Charleroi Airport lean international, from American chains to Italian and British specialties. If you want some local flavor, especially if you’re just connecting here and won’t be leaving the airport at all, I strongly recommend La Belgique Gourmande in Terminal 1. At this sweet spot you can eat your fill of Belgian chocolate, Belgian waffles and all manner of locally made confectionary. Elsewhere, many of the bars serve local craft beers, but Charles’ Brewing Company also serves up traditional Belgian dishes to accompany your brews, and they change daily. Even better, there’s one in each terminal, so you’re in luck wherever you find yourself.

At the end of the day, the decision between BRU and CRL airports may be as simple as where you’re coming from or what your budget is. BRU best serves those looking for more services and comforts, and those taking longer-haul international flights. CRL is ideal for travelers looking to save as much as possible on flights and who are connecting to nearer destinations. Whichever one you choose, remember that it takes about 60 – 90 minutes to travel between BRU and CRL airports, depending on the time of day, so be sure to arrive at the right one when departing or you’ll likely miss your flight.
