Tour the underside of Cleveland’s Veterans Memorial Bridge
by: Laura Morrison
Posted: Jun 24, 2023 / 07:58 AM EDT
Updated: Jun 24, 2023 / 07:58 AM EDT
CLEVELAND (WJW) — It’s a side of Cleveland not seen by the public since 2019.
This weekend, the subway level of the Veterans Memorial Bridge, which connects downtown to Ohio City, is being opened by Cuyahoga County for a free tour.
The event hasn’t taken place since the pandemic but is back in action Friday, June 23 and Saturday, June 24. Last time, the event attracted around 17,000 visitors.
The first night it’s open 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., with the public welcome to eat dinner and offer up ideas for how the underside can be used.
The next day, people can go on a self-guided tour through the space from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. While you do not need reservations to attend, a release form must be signed and can be done ahead of time online. Those 18 and over must have a valid ID to get inside.
“The Veterans Memorial Bridge has so much historical significance in our community, serving as a major hub for commuter transportation until the discontinuation of streetcar service in 1954. Since then, the underside of the bridge has been primarily open for tours—but we know it has more potential,” County Executive Chris Ronayne said in a statement.
As the area does not have a ton of street parking, people should get creative with their transportation.
Find out more about the tour, which starts on 2433 Superior Viaduct, right here or by calling 216-348-3824.

Cuyahoga County to host tours of the historic Veterans Memorial Bridge
Posted on May 02 2024
Media Contact: Kelly Woodard: (216) 250-6146; [email protected]
The Rediscover Veterans Memorial Bridge event on June 21 and June 22 will feature an art installation with integrated music and performances called GO Dream , created by Cleveland artist Chuck Karnak . GO Dream will showcase a series of stunning kinetic sculptures, or Dream Sails, which will be suspended from the bridge's ceiling. The Dream Sails will move in random ways, creating endless possibilities in how they tip, twirl, and reflect light and breeze. The event is part of Cleveland History Days , an annual celebration of the city’s heritage hosted by Canalway Partners.
"The Veterans Memorial Bridge, a symbol of connection and unity, has long been admired for its stunning design. Cuyahoga County invites residents and visitors to discover this architectural gem and the beauty of the surrounding region,” said Cuyahoga County Executive Chris Ronayne. “This year’s Rediscover Veterans Memorial Bridge event is where history and art intertwine. The tours provide a unique opportunity to explore the area’s rich history, envision the limitless potential of the bridge’s lower level, and show support for our local artists.
TAKE A HIKE TOUR : Cuyahoga County has teamed up with the Historic Gateway Neighborhood Corporation to offer a spectacular Take a Hike Tours experience. The tour now includes the magnificent Veterans Memorial Bridge , where knowledgeable tour guides will take you along the streetcar level, from West 9th to West 25th Streets. As you walk, you'll be greeted by actors dressed as historical Clevelanders who will regale you with fascinating stories of the city's past. This 90-minute tour promises to be an unforgettable adventure!
The Take a Hike Walking Tours on the bridge will take place on Sundays: June 9, July 14, August 11, and September 8. The tours will be held at 1 p.m., 1:30 p.m., 2 p.m., and 2:30 p.m.
Registration is required. Sign up for a tour TODAY at takeahikecle.com .
“We're thrilled to collaborate with the Historic Gateway Neighborhood Corporation to extend the offerings of our bridge tours,” adds Annie Pease, Transportation Advisor to Cuyahoga County Executive Chris Ronayne. “These events allow us to journey back in time and imagine the bridge’s future role in multimodal transportation. We aim to find innovative ways to enhance connectivity and accessibility, ensuring the Veterans Memorial Bridge will again serve as a vital link for all.”
Event participants must sign a waiver. All minors must be accompanied by an adult. The waivers will be made available online in advance of the event.

Underside of Detroit-Superior Bridge is as dope as advertised
One of the region's most underutilized and visually striking spaces will be open to the public this weekend.
Driving the news: Visitors can traverse the historic underside of the Veterans Memorial (Detroit-Superior) bridge Friday 4-11pm and Saturday noon-11pm.
Catch up quick: County Executive Chris Ronayne has championed re-opening the bridge's lower level as a park and multi-modal transit pathway — Cleveland's answer to New York's "High Line."
- Streetcars operated there from 1918 to 1954.
- In recent years, the county and nonprofit partners have periodically opened the lower level for events and tours.
Zoom in: The space will feature a technical artist, Chuck Karnak, who will install it this weekend.
- His "Go Dream" exhibit will enliven the space with 120 fabric "sails" suspended along and throughout the bridge, colorfully lit and accompanied by a soundscape of digital and live musical performances.
- Karnak is an in-demand local lighting designer and audio engineer for festivals and events. He previously managed the Ingenuity Festival, which occupied the bridge in 2010 and 2011.
The latest: In March, the county received a $7 million federal grant for a feasibility study and an engineering plan to reimagine the bridge.
What they're saying: "It's a visually appealing space," Annie Pease, Cuyahoga County's senior advisor on transportation, tells Axios.
- "And it especially resonates with Clevelanders. The streetcars and the river and the lake are such a part of the city's story. This is an infrastructure asset that's telling that visual story and connecting us to our history."
By the numbers: Roughly 9,000 people visited the bridge during a rediscovery weekend in 2023, per Pease, and the county is anticipating greater numbers this weekend.
Stop by: Self-guided bridge tours will be free and open to the public, but attendees must sign a waiver .
Zoom out: The Rediscover Veterans Memorial Bridge event is part of Cleveland History Days .
- Through June 30, visitors can participate in more than 50 tours, lectures, and other events celebrating the city's history.

Veteran's Memorial Bridge tour in June gives you a glimpse into Cleveland's streetcar and subway past
CLEVELAND — It's a bridge that thousands of Clevelanders travel on a daily basis—chances are you've been on it recently— but have you ever gone under the Veteran's Memorial Bridge where streetcars used to take commuters to and from their destinations in the early to mid-twentieth century?
The Cuyahoga County Department of Public Works announced its annual Veteran's Memorial Bridge and Subway Station Tour will take place on June 22 as part city-wide events honoring the 50th anniversary of the infamous Cuyahoga River burning.
New this year is an event that will feature a special immersive, color-changing light exhibition designed by internationally renowned Squidsoup , a group of artists and designers based in the UK as part of Cleveland's Foundation's Creative Fusion.
Once the largest double-deck concrete bridge at the time of completion in 1918, the Veteran's Memorial Bridge continues to stand front and center among Cleveland's architectural wonders. Streetcars, tunnels and the four original tracks still stand as they were in 1917 when it opened to the public on Christmas Day. The subway contained six stations, four restrooms and pedestrian tunnels—serving as a major hub for commuter transportation until the discontinuation of streetcar service on January 24, 1954.
The bridge was also listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1976.
This free self-guided tour gives curious Clevelanders a chance to step back in time when the original streetcar station was a part of everyday life. Visitors will also get views of Lake Erie, the Flats and downtown Cleveland that are only available once a year from the bridge.
The tour is on Saturday, June 22 from 10 a.m. to 11 p.m.
Food trucks will be on site and there will be plenty of family-friendly activities on site.
What you should know before your visit:
- There is no parking available at the site due to construction in Ohio City. Limited street parking is available.
- The drop-off zone is 2433 Superior Viaduct in Cleveland.
- Handicap parking—2433 Superior Viaduct.
- Additional parking is available at Nautica Entertainment Complex Park— 2200 Elm St. Parking is cash only.
- Visitors must complete a release form prior to entering the bridge. Print and complete them to save time. Forms can be downloaded here .
- Bring comfortable walking shoes and a flashlight
- UH Bikes are allowing riders to use the bikes to get to the bridge and lock them up without incurring out-of-hub fees.

The lower levels of the Veterans Memorial Bridge that connects downtown to the near West Side were open for exploring on Friday and Saturday. Visitors learned about the bridge’s history as a main thoroughfare for streetcars in the early 20th century while being treated to an art show combined with live music and dance performances.
Cleveland artist Chuck Karnak created GO Dream, an art installation of Dream Sails, suspended from the bridge’s ceiling as part of Cleveland History Days .
Cleveland and Cuyahoga County officials have been asking for residents’ input about what to do with the streetcar-level space that sits most of the year unused. If you missed this event, small group tours are planned throughout the summer.

Detroit-Superior Bridge
Cleveland's First High-Level Bridge
Bathed in blue light at night, the Detroit-Superior Bridge (also known as the Veterans Memorial Bridge since 1989) is a striking feature on the Cleveland skyline just west of Public Square. Cleveland's King Bridge Company built the span between 1912 and 1917 at a cost of over five million dollars. This 3,112-foot-long compression arch, suspended-deck bridge was the first fixed high-level bridge in the city and, for a time, one of the largest steel and concrete reinforced bridges in the world. Its single steel span over the Cuyahoga River provides 96 feet of clearance above the water, allowing for uninterrupted vehicle traffic. At the time of its completion this was a vast improvement over the older Superior Viaduct, whose center span was forced to swing open several times a day in order to allow boats to pass underneath, stopping bridge traffic for five or more minutes.
Until the end of Cleveland's streetcar era in the mid-1950s, the lower deck of the Detroit-Superior Bridge carried streetcars on its four sets of tracks. To this end, a subway and underground passenger stations were built below its east and west approaches. Meanwhile, vehicular traffic on the upper deck of the bridge was heavy in the years following the bridge's opening on Thanksgiving Day 1917, and traffic tie-ups often occurred. These lessened with the opening of the city's second fixed high level span – the Lorain-Carnegie Bridge – in the 1930s. More recently, the development of the interstate highway system, with its various high-level spans over the Cuyahoga River, has further diminished the bridge's importance to commuters. However, the Detroit-Superior Bridge remains a key feature in Cleveland's built environment and an impressive example of architectural and engineering expertise.

Most People Have No Idea This Unique Tunnel In Cleveland Exists

Like any city that experienced an industrial boom and rapid slow-down, Cleveland is a modern urbex dream. There’s abandoned buildings everywhere, from massive warehouses to tiny homes. Every city has rumors of underground tunnels: the idea is so full of mystery and adventure, kids and adults alike enjoy the intrigue. But Cleveland actually does have abandoned underground tunnels. These tunnels were part of the Cleveland subway system that used to link west Cleveland to downtown.
The Detroit-Superior subway line was operational until 1954.

Are there other abandoned places to visit in Cleveland?
There are so many neat abandoned places in Cleveland to check out. As we said earlier, this city really is the dream of an urban explorer, and it's our hauntingly beautiful abandoned spaces that make it such. A visit to the now crumbling National Acme industrial plant will remind you of America's rich industrial past, and its massive size means there is a lot to be seen. Or you can visit the Warner and Swassey observatory that's just a little bit outside of Cleveland. This now defunct observatory is still quite the site with its large dome, and is a sad reminder of the views that city light pollution has taken from us. Only In Your State also put together a Cleveland road trip that takes you to multiple abandoned sites in just an hour of driving!
Does Cleveland have any haunted places to visit?
Believers and skeptics alike will enjoy visiting some of the most haunted places around Cleveland. A trip to Franklin Castle is guaranteed to scare the pants off of you. Believed to be the most haunted house in Ohio , this home saw six tragic deaths, and many claim to have encountered spirits. While you can't enter the building, just standing in its shadow is quite intimidating, and you never know what or who may walk past the windows. Another famed sight of hauntings in Cleveland is the House of Wills , a former funeral parlor. If you do your research you may be able to catch a tour of this terrifying spot that has a history as a hospital and speakeasy. So many spirits have been spotted here!
What hidden gems does Cleveland have?
Not everyone loves a crowd, so finding some of the hidden gems in Cleveland is the perfect way to explore the city but avoid the masses. Perfect for all seasons but even more ideal when gloomy weather is getting you down is the Rockefeller Park Greenhouse . There is an entire acre of dreamy and lush plant life inside the cozy greenhouse and three more acres outside. Another great choice is checking out the stunning Sanctuary Museum . This space looks like a church, but inside is a museum designed to protect and restore religious work. The collections hold statues, paintings, holy relics, and more.

Mikal Bridges trade rumors: Why Nets are hesitant to move their star and what landing spots would make sense
The nets, with bridges as their top player, are currently stuck in nba purgatory.
The Brooklyn Nets really want you to know that they're not trading Mikal Bridges . The Memphis Grizzlies offered four first-round picks as soon as the Nets acquired him. Brooklyn said no. The Rockets offered them their own picks back from the 2021 James Harden trade. Brooklyn said no. At virtually every opportunity, the Nets have painstakingly leaked to reporters that Bridges is not on the table.
And yet, a new Bridges rumor or trade idea seems to pop up every week or two. Half of the league wants him, and no matter how many times the Nets tell the world he's not available, nobody seems to believe them. So what's happening here? Why can't Bridges escape the rumor mill? Is he truly available? What teams might have enough to pry him away from the Nets this offseason?
Why he's in trade rumors
Because the Nets are in purgatory. It's really that simple. The Nets weren't good enough to seriously compete for even a Play-In spot last season. There's no reason to believe the current roster is going to be any better next season. Yet without control over any of their own first-round picks through 2027, the Nets have little incentive for being this bad. They either need to fully embrace a rebuild or find a way into contention. The latter seems less likely than the former.
There was a time in which the widespread expectation around the league was that Donovan Mitchell would force his way out of Cleveland. That was Brooklyn's path out of the bottom. Mitchell is a New York native. The Nets, with max cap space during Mitchell's free agency year of 2025, could leverage a good price for him. But if Mitchell stays put, there aren't any more readymade New York-born stars that would want to make the Nets their destination.
Bridges has a skill set that fits practically any team. He's a high-end 3-and-D wing that brings meaningful secondary shot-creation. More than that, he has a contract that fits any team. He's owed only $48.2 million over the next two seasons combined. The closer that contract gets to expiring, the less value Bridges has in a trade. The moment to move him for maximum value is now.
Why the Nets would keep him
Because if the Nets do manage to find a star, whoever it is, that player will enhance Bridges. The Nets may not currently have a player capable of being the best on a good team, but Bridges certainly fits the bill as a No. 2. Finding the top guy is obviously the hardest part, but sidekicks don't exactly grow on trees, either. The Nets are betting that their abundance of future draft picks from other teams (most notably, the Suns ) can be parlayed into the sort of player that would turn Bridges into a supercharged secondary option, and that together, they could form the backbone of a winner.
Is there another player like that out there if Mitchell stays put? Well, it's hard to say. Players like Trae Young , Brandon Ingram and Karl-Anthony Towns that have populated the rumor mill don't exactly hit that level, but NBA offseasons are unpredictable. Someone unexpected is suddenly unhappy. Some team with a hefty tax bill decides to save money. The names we're covering now are not necessarily the only ones that will become available. The Nets are betting that someone we don't expect hits the market.
And then there are the optics. Retaining Bridges at least maintains the illusion that this team is trying to win right now. Giving him away kicks off a multi-year rebuild that would mean admitting defeat fully on the promise of the Kevin Durant era that came before this one. This is, of course, not an intelligent way to run a franchise, but there are real people with jobs on the line here. Would the front office that failed to win it all with Durant feel confident that it could survive another lengthy reset? That matters here.
What destinations make sense?
Bridges fits anywhere. Basically anyone can absorb his salary. Basically everyone needs another wing. That means that our fits are going to be the teams with assets that appeal to Brooklyn, specifically. That's going to mean high-upside young players and draft picks. Here are three possibilities.
Houston Rockets: The Rockets are by far the best trade partner for Brooklyn because they control the the next four Nets first-round picks, including No. 3 in this year's draft. The Rockets tried to trade the Nets their picks back for Bridges in February and were rebuffed. Now that this year's pick has jumped into the top three, it looks even more enticing. A Bridges-to-Houston trade is Brooklyn's only real path towards the tank it so desperately needs. In Bridges, Houston would get a premium role player to put around its array of young players. The Rockets want to win now, and Bridges fits the defensive identity head coach Ime Udoka wants to build.
New York Knicks : Come on, this is the one the whole basketball world wants, right? Let the Villanova quartet of Jalen Brunson , Donte DiVincenzo , Josh Hart and Mikal Bridges reunite! The Knicks have all of their own picks plus several from other teams to dangle in a trade here, plus plenty of win-now players the Nets could conceivably flip elsewhere. Sadly, the Knicks and Nets haven't made a trade since 1983. Clearly, there's a rivalry here that the front offices have yet to breach, so for now, this one probably won't happen.
Utah Jazz : The Jazz aren't too dissimilar to the Nets. Both are non-playoff teams that could opt for the tanking route, but Utah controls its own picks, and the Jazz have reportedly sniffed around win-now upgrades lately (such as Jrue Holiday last offseason ). If Utah does want to win now, it could offer Brooklyn a diversified package of draft picks from the Cavaliers , Timberwolves and themselves. More pertinently for Bridges, the Jazz have so little money committed over the next few years that they could conceivably renegotiate-and-extend Bridges before he becomes a free agent in 2026, allowing him to get paid fairly early instead of waiting out his current, below-market deal.
What is the latest reporting?
The Athletic's Fred Katz is the most recent reporter to indicate that the Nets have given "expressed zero interest" in trading Bridges this offseason. Every team known to have tried to get him, most notably the Grizzlies and Rockets, has been rebuffed. There is no firmly reported reason to believe that the Nets will trade Bridges. We're operating with common sense here. The Nets should trade Bridges. But based on the information we now have, it seems they probably won't.

13 top trade candidates and their potential fits
Mark Feinsand
Identifying trade candidates in mid-June can be a tricky annual exercise, but this year’s standings have made it more difficult than ever before.
Entering play Friday, 12 teams in the American League were within 6 1/2 games of a postseason spot, while 13 teams in the National League were no more than 1 1/2 games out of a playoff spot.
- Trade Deadline Inbox: Who are the buyers and sellers?
With such a crowded field of potential contenders, trying to figure out which players might be on the move by July 30 is a challenge. Let’s take a look at 13 emerging trade candidates from the five teams that appear destined to become sellers -- the White Sox, Angels, Athletics, Marlins and Rockies -- along with potential fits for those players (listed alphabetically). All stats below are entering play on Friday.
Tyler Anderson , LHP, Angels Anderson has rebounded from a down year with the Angels in 2023, posting a 2.48 ERA in his first 15 starts of '24. He’s signed for $13 million this season and next, but given the need for rotation help around the league, the Angels figure to have suitors if they opt to move the southpaw. Anderson has been excellent of late, pitching to a 2.00 ERA in 45 innings over his past seven starts.
Potential fits: Astros, Cardinals, Red Sox
Miguel Andujar , LF, Athletics Andujar has hit well since making his season debut on May 24 , batting .330 with two homers and 14 RBIs in 23 games. The 29-year-old is on his third team since 2022, but given his $1.7 million salary and additional year of control, Andujar could be a low-cost acquisition for a club seeking a right-handed outfield bat.
Potential fits: Braves, Pirates, Twins
Garrett Crochet , LHP, White Sox The White Sox have several players they can move this summer, but Crochet is inarguably the one that will bring back the biggest return based on his production, age and club control. The lefty turned 25 on Friday, is earning only $800,000 this season and is arbitration-eligible for two more years, keeping him under club control through the 2026 season. Crochet’s conversion from the bullpen to the rotation was bumpy at first (6.37 ERA in his first six starts), but he’s posted a 1.68 ERA over his past 10, striking out 84 batters in 59 innings. His 124 strikeouts lead the AL , while his 12.6 strikeouts per nine innings lead all MLB qualified pitchers. Chicago’s asking price will be understandably high if it opts to move Crochet, but nothing gets a bidding war going like a young, controllable starter.
Potential fits: Brewers, Dodgers, Orioles
Paul DeJong , SS, White Sox DeJong has already matched his home run total from all of 2023, belting 14 in his first 70 games with Chicago. The 30-year-old's .751 OPS is his highest value since his lone All-Star season in 2019 (.762), providing great value for his $1.75 million contract . DeJong is slated to become a free agent at the end of the season, and given the dearth of middle-infield talent expected to be moved this summer, he could become a popular target for contenders.
Potential fits: Dodgers, Giants, Guardians

Elias Díaz , C, Rockies Díaz might be the best catcher available this summer, combining a solid mix of offense (.303/.352/.439) and defense (91% framing, 89% CS above average). Díaz was hot at the plate in recent weeks, posting an .838 OPS in 28 games since May 3, but he landed on the injured list with a left calf strain earlier in June. He’s earning $6 million this season, his last before becoming a free agent, but his recovery from the injury will determine his trade status as July approaches.
Potential fits: Cubs, Guardians, Tigers
Carlos Estévez , RHP, Angels Virtually every contender out there will be looking for bullpen help in the coming weeks, one reason the Angels should consider jumping the market with Estévez, who is earning $6.75 million this season and headed for free agency in the fall. The closer has a 0.79 ERA and .327 OPS allowed in his past 11 outings, successfully converting all seven of his save opportunities. He’s pitched in setup roles in past seasons, making him a prime trade-rental candidate for clubs seeking either a closer or a late-inning bridge to their current ninth-inning man.
Potential fits: Mariners, Royals, Yankees
Erick Fedde , RHP, White Sox Fedde’s return to the Majors has been solid, as the right-hander has a 5-1 record and 3.09 ERA over 87 1/3 innings in his first 15 starts. Fedde inked a two-year, $15 million deal , so an acquiring club would be taking on the remainder of his $7.5 million salary in 2024, plus $7.5 million next year -- a very reasonable price for a reliable starter.
Potential fits: Astros, Brewers, Cardinals
Matt Moore , LHP, Angels The Angels signed Moore to a one-year, $9 million deal on Jan. 27 , and while the 35-year-old struggled during the first month and a half (7.02 ERA in 16 2/3 innings through May 20), he’s allowed just two earned runs over his past 11 innings (1.64 ERA) dating back to May 21. Moore is still effective against lefties (.191/.292/.357), and he could provide bullpen depth for a contender.
Potential fits: Astros, D-backs, Royals
Cal Quantrill , RHP, Rockies It’s not common for the Rockies to have a starting pitcher to deal around Deadline time, and although Quantrill has another year of control (he’s arbitration-eligible for a fourth and final time next winter), Colorado might look to seize on his strong first half in a pitching-needy market. Quantrill has a 2.25 ERA over his past nine starts, lowering his season ERA from 5.34 to 3.43 in the process. The 29-year-old is earning $6.55 million this season.
Potential fits: Padres, Orioles, Twins
Kevin Pillar , OF, Angels Taylor Ward’s name is often mentioned as a trade candidate, but with two years of arbitration eligibility remaining, it will take a lot to pry him away from the Angels. Pillar, on the other hand, is owed only the league minimum. He will be a free agent after the season, and while the 35-year-old’s best days are behind him, he’s had a resurgence since joining Los Angeles, posting a .959 OPS with six homers and 25 RBIs in 33 games.
Potential fits: Braves, Orioles, Tigers
Luis Rengifo , INF, Angels Rengifo has four homers, 20 RBIs, 18 stolen bases and a .313/.359/.428 slash line this season, and he is among the most versatile players who figure to be available this summer. The 27-year-old switch-hitter has started 30 games at third base and 21 at second this season, along with one at shortstop; he’s also played all three outfield spots during his career. Rengifo -- who is earning $4.4 million this season and has one more year of arbitration eligibility -- is an ideal candidate for a club seeking infield help.
Potential fits: Braves, Mariners, Twins
Tanner Scott , LHP, Marlins Scott is having an excellent season, though he’s not being given many save opportunities with the last-place Marlins. Scott ranks in the top 10 percent of MLB in average exit velocity, expected batting average , whiff rate and ground ball rate, posting a 1.74 ERA in 31 innings. The southpaw is earning $5.7 million this season, his last before free agency, making him a prime rental candidate.
Potential fits: Orioles, Phillies, Yankees
Andrew Vaughn , 1B, White Sox Unlike DeJong, Vaughn isn’t headed for free agency this offseason, so the White Sox might not be inclined to deal the 26-year-old. But the first baseman could be one of Chicago’s most intriguing trade chips, because Vaughn is earning $3.25 million this season and will be arbitration-eligible for two more years after 2024. Vaughn bounced back from a slow start, slashing .289/.336/.528 (.864 OPS) with nine home runs and 27 RBIs in his past 36 games since May 8, after posting a .471 OPS with no homers and seven RBIs in his first 34 contests.
Potential fits: Astros, Mariners, Yankees
