The Best Solo Travel Destinations in the United States for an Unforgettable Adventure

Whether you're looking for activity or relaxation, your dream trip awaits.

preview for 15 of the Best Solo Getaways for a Little You Time

While traveling with friends and family can be a lot of fun, going somewhere alone has its perks. You get to choose everything — the destination, the hotel, the itinerary, the restaurants, how much money you spend and beyond. Only one opinion matters...yours. It's also a great way to push yourself out of your comfort zone, meet new people (if you so choose), unplug, rejuvenate and bask in moments of reflection — or even just escape reality for a few days.

Whether you're planning your first adventure on your own or are a solo travel veteran, choosing a destination can be overwhelming, especially if you still have a lot of places to check off your bucket list . The good news is, you don't have to go far for the adventure or relaxation you crave, because there are plenty of options across the U.S.

Weighing variables such as walkability, safety, self care opportunities, number of historic sites and museums and access to nature, we've come up with a list of the best places in the U.S. for solo travelers — ranging from mountain and beach destinations to small towns and large cities. Time to book your ticket for one, plan your itinerary (or don't, remember, it's your trip!) and answer to no one except yourself for a few days.

Saratoga Springs, New York

saratoga springs, new york

This beautiful upstate New York town is a short Amtrak ride from the city, so it's ideal for NYC residents looking for a quick solo escape. Watch a horse race at the historic Saratoga Race Track, jam out at a concert at the Saratoga Performing Arts Center and enjoy the mineral spring baths (where the city gets its name!) at the Saratoga Spa State Park. Oh and don't miss the fabulous dining and shopping up and down Broadway.

Waco, Texas

waco, tx, usa march 18, 2017 the entrance to magnolia seed and supply overlooking plants in the garden area of magnolia silos

Ideal for the Fixer Upper fan looking for a low-key getaway, the heart of Chip and Joanna Gaines's Magnolia empire is a fun Texas town that's a short drive from both Austin and Dallas. Stop at Magnolia Market for tasty treats and farmhouse chic shopping. Beyond Magnolia, there's boutique shopping, wine and beer tastings and an impressive nightlife downtown. For more fun, tour the Dr. Pepper Museum, check out the Mammoth National Monument or visit the Texas Ranger Hall of Fame and Museum.

Carmel-by-the-Sea, California

fairy tale like small store with straw roof

You'll feel like the main character in a storybook in Carmel-by-the-Sea — but in addition to marveling at the fairytale-like village, there's plenty to do. You'll find the famous Pebble Beach golf course, the Carmel Mission Basilica Museum, Point Lobos State Natural Reserve and the white-sand Carmel Beach all nearby. Pro tip: Carmel Bakery and The Cottage of Sweets are great treat-yourself stops.

Santa Fe, New Mexico

inn and spa at loretto hotel, santa fe

Santa Fe is a prime destination for art lovers, as it's home to both the Georgia O'Keeffe Museum and the original Meow Wolf (an experimental, immersive art exhibit that doubles as something of a psychedelic escape room). Art galleries, antique stores and craft shops line picturesque downtown Santa Fe, which is also a great place to try New Mexico's famous red and green chiles. Don't forget to book a spa day at the Inn & Spa at Loretto .

Burlington, Vermont

burlington skyline on the banks of lake champlain

If relaxation is what you crave, Burlington is a bucolic little town with a laid-back atmosphere. Saunter through the lovely Church Street Marketplace, tour the Ben & Jerry's factory, grab a cold drink at a craft brewery or take a cooking class at Essex Resort & Spa (just a short 20-minute drive away). When the weather's warm, partake in all of Lake Champlain's fun — from boating and sunbathing at the beach to hiking along the shore. Or visit during the fall, when the foliage is nothing short of superb.

Flagstaff, Arizona

downtown flagstaff

Flagstaff has as many activities as a big city, but with a small town vibe. It's close to natural and historical wonders, like the Grand Canyon, Walnut Canyon and the Wupatki National Monument, but you won't need a car to see them — plenty of tour operators are located in Flagstaff. If you're into space, the famous Lowell Observatory — a.k.a. where astronomers first discovered the ex-planet Pluto — is just outside of town. The city's downtown is a destination in its own right, with restaurants and bars to fill your time between adventures in the desert.

Portland, Maine

Ranked one of the 25 safest places to live by U.S. News , Portland is a pristine New England seaside city with beautiful lighthouses, an art museum and opulent Victorian mansions. Stop by any of the waterfront restaurants for the fresh catch of the day, or pop into a local brewpub for a pint.

New York City, New York

brooklyin bridge's pedestrian walkway at sunrise, new york city

Big city energy seekers, this one's for you! Solo travelers will never run out things to do in the city that never sleeps. Visit some of the world's best museums, catch a Broadway show or join the hunt for the "best" slice of pizza or bagel in the city — both matters of some dispute. You'll need the extra carbs to explore the vast city by subway, from Central Park and Battery Park to the hipster enclaves of Brooklyn and the multi-cultural offerings of Queens.

The Poconos, Pennsylvania

fire pits at sunset at lake resort

The Poconos, a mountainous region in northeastern Pennsylvania filled with ski slopes and charming small towns, is a great option for adventure and relaxation seekers alike. You'll need a car to get around, but driving through the scenery — especially in the fall — is one of the area's highlights. Hit hiking trails, like the one to Bushkill Falls, and stop at local gems, like Callie's Candy Kitchen. If you're seeking relaxation (and a spa) more than action, stay at one of the many resorts in the Poconos, like Skytop Lodge.

Savannah, Georgia

Savannah is best known for its historic district, filled with beautiful architecture, museums, art galleries and lush green squares — all ideal for solo exploration. Plus, the "Hostess City of the South" is a foodie paradise, with a diverse range of restaurants and cafes serving all sorts of delicious cuisine. But don't forget to make time for Southern food while you're there!

Boise, Idaho

hot air balloons

Another one of the U.S.'s 25 safest places to live , Boise is surrounded by mountains, making it a scenic location and hiker's paradise. The city itself has quite a few green spaces, including the Idaho Botanical Garden and Camel's Back Park. On Saturdays from mid-April to mid-December, it hosts the Capital City Public Market, filled with local food and craft vendors. If you happen to visit in late summer, don't miss the magical annual Spirit of Boise Balloon Classic held in Ann Morrison Park.

Ann Arbor, Michigan

liberty street scene in ann arbor

Ann Arbor is an under-the-radar town perfect for museum lovers, thanks to the University of Michigan. Worth a visit are the institution's Museum of Art, Museum of Natural History and Museum of Archaeology. We also suggest strolling through the Matthaei Botanical Gardens and catching a show at the Hill Auditorium. Off campus, visit the Nickels Arcade for shopping and eats.

Oklahoma City, Oklahoma

bricktown, oklahoma city

To put it simply, Oklahoma City is an underrated destination. Between its boisterous Bricktown neighborhood, unique Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum, beautiful Myriad Botanical Gardens and whitewater rafting and kayaking facility, you might be surprised by how much there is to do. For food and accommodations, check out the newly-opened National Hotel, housed in a former bank (psst, there's a cocktail bar in the old vault).

Reno, Nevada

welcome to reno

Sure, Las Vegas might get most of the attention in Nevada, but Reno is a more approachable destination for a solo trip. Yes, there are casinos here, but you'll also find impressive art and automobile museums, a lovely rose garden and the Nevada Historical Society. In the winter, skiing is nearby, and in the early fall, Reno hosts the world's largest free hot air balloon event. "The Biggest Little City in the World" certainly lives up to its moniker.

Tampa, Florida

tampa florida skyline

Most travelers are familiar with South Florida's hotspots, but Tampa to the west (also considered one of the safest cities to live in the U.S. ) is rightfully drawing attention. Its most famous attraction is Busch Gardens, but the city has more to offer than roller coasters. Head to the Tampa Riverwalk for waterfront dining, or visit Ybor City for lively nightlife, classic cigar lounges and the original 118-year-old Columbia Restaurant — home to one of the tastiest house salads you'll ever eat and a must-see flamenco show.

Asheville, North Carolina

house on the hill

Asheville has an impressive range of offerings for all types of interests. Are you a fan of history? There's the Biltmore Estate.Shopper? Head for the Grove Arcade. Hiker? The Blue Ridge Mountains are yours to explore. Art Lover? Stroll through the River Arts District. Oh, and did we mention the local breweries and exceptional Southern comfort food?

Boulder, Colorado

pearl street mall, downtown boulder

Before you hit the ski slopes or hiking trails (depending on the season), check out the Pearl Street Mall in Boulder, filled with quirky shops and tasty eats. You might not expect it, but Boulder is also home to a landmark tea spot called the Boulder Dushanbe Teahouse (a solo afternoon tea sounds divine to us), a contemporary art museum and the Shelby American Collection of classic cars.

Chicago, Illinois

cloud gate sculpture at att plaza, chicago

Chicago may be a big city, but it's easy to navigate on foot — or on the "L" train system. There's no shortage of activities, whether you're interested in taking an architectural history boat tour, visiting the Art Institute of Chicago or Field Museum or taking a selfie with the famous "Bean." This should go without saying, but make sure to take yourself on a deep-dish pizza tour, because you deserve it (and you'll have the whole pie to yourself).

Harpers Ferry, West Virginia

harpers ferry, west virginia

If you're interested in hiking part of the Appalachian Trail, hit the region around Harpers Ferry. The visitor center is considered the "psychological midpoint" of the trail, and there are a number of scenic day hikes in the area. The town itself — which boasts small-town charm — is part of the Harpers Ferry National Historical Park and has an antique shop (called The Gilded Flea) and a historic candy shop.

South Bend, Indiana

morris performing arts center in south bend

College towns make for perfect weekend getaways for solo travelers, with lively downtowns and impressive museums — and South Bend is no exception. There's a three-story automotive museum, two art museums, a gorgeous neo-Gothic church, the Morris Performing Arts Center and a scenic riverfront park to fill your itinerary. It also has several chocolate shops, the Indiana Whiskey Company for tastings and restaurants serving cuisine from all around the world.

Considering Solo Cruise: Worth It? ( self.solotravel )

submitted 4 months ago by Normal_Coconut_2379

I'm a 26-year-old guy who's no stranger to cruising, having been on about a dozen trips, but always with family. This year, I'm contemplating the idea of going solo on a 4-day Bahamas cruise, yet I find myself torn between the thrill of solo adventure and the comfort of family vacations.

The cruise package, including flights and the lowest accommodations, would amount to around $1500. While the idea of exploring the Bahamas solo sounds fun, the solo surcharge for double occupancy gives me pause. Despite having visited the Bahamas many times before, the idea of experiencing it solo adds a new dimension.

So, fellow solo travelers, I seek your advice: Is cruising solo as enjoyable as with family or friends? Is the experience worth the extra cost? Alternatively, do you have any other suggestions for a solo trip for someone like me?

I’ve found that cruises and other sorts of all inclusive hotels not great for solo travel.

If you can swing it and the itinerary meets your needs, go for it.

[–] KyloRenTheNightKing 17 points 18 points 19 points 4 months ago   (0 children)

If you want to do it and you can afford it, do it. Life is short my friend

[–] Illustrious_Can_5826 33 points 34 points 35 points 4 months ago   (6 children)

I want to go on a solo cruise but I keep chickening out. I've done solo trips before but when I'm dining alone I feel like such a loser lol. I get weird sympathy stares

[–] 70redgal70 19 points 20 points 21 points 4 months ago   (3 children)

The cruise ship will assign you to a table of people for dinner unless you request a more private table like a two seater.

[–] Bright-Friendship356 12 points 13 points 14 points 4 months ago   (1 child)

Yes, cruise ships aren’t really formulated with solo travelers in mind. If this sounds like spontaneous fun for you, go for it. If you’re like myself and thinks this sounds excruciating, I’d try to build my own itinerary to mimic the excursions, then do it myself without the cruise facet.

[–] 70redgal70 0 points 1 point 2 points 4 months ago   (0 children)

I've been on cruises. They are fine for solos. They have advantages like having transportation, hotel, food, entertainment all in one place.

[–] AcademicMaybe8775 1 point 2 points 3 points 4 months ago   (0 children)

you could also just eat the buffet stuff and forego the restaurant meals if the idea of sitting with a bunch of randoms isnt your idea too

[–] sigdiff 9 points 10 points 11 points 4 months ago   (0 children)

I mentioned this in another comment here, but Norwegian Cruise lines have specially designed solo rooms without a supplement. You also have access to a solo lounge to meet other solo travelers, and a coordinator who helps you and the other solos organize things like getting to know each other, making dinner reservations together, booking shows. Things like that so if you want to spend your time alone you can, but you can also make friends and do a lot of activities that way. The first time I booked a solo cruise, I didn't need a single meal myself the whole week. I was always out with my new friends and it was really fun.

[–] Tacos314 4 points 5 points 6 points 4 months ago   (0 children)

Get a solo cabinet on NCL, it's supper nice, they setup a group table for meals, etc... so you can chose to go it a lone or hang with the group.

I have traveled solo a lot, not sure I have ever gotten sympathy stares, you may be projecting a bit.

[–] ajinnc 10 points 11 points 12 points 4 months ago   (0 children)

I loved my solo cruise, also to the Bahamas. I had use or lose pto and my wife, while a bit jealous, was all for it.

If I wanted to be social, it was easy. If I wanted to not interact with people, it was just as easy. I read 4 books on that cruise, met a bunch of interesting people, gambled in the casino, enjoyed the social piano bar, caught whatever shows I felt like and played golf at the Atlantis golf course.

I ate dinner in the MDR by myself and almost always ended up engaging in conversation with people next to me who couldn’t imagine going on a solo cruise. I also people watched during dinner and made up my own version of what they were talking about. 🤣

One thing I found interesting is how many miserable people and people arguing I saw at dinners.

I would do it again in a heartbeat.

[–] ChequeOneTwoThree 9 points 10 points 11 points 4 months ago   (1 child)

So, fellow solo travelers, I seek your advice:

The thing with Solo travel, is that the only person you are trying to please is yourself. There can be tremendous upsides, it's cheap, you don't waste time doing things that aren't interesting, and you can change your plans whenever you want. Every traveller is different, and something that I believe is that you won't really understand 'how' you are going to enjoy solo travel until you actually do it.

Alternatively, do you have any other suggestions for a solo trip for someone like me?

No ideas on other trip suggestions for you, since the only thing we know about you is 26m and you like cruises. But what I can do is offer a little perspective. You say you're looking at $1500 for a cruise around the Caribbean. I, just today, flew back from a solo trip from California to Taipei, Taiwan, flights were just over $800, hotel was just under $700, and I spent less than $60 on food, drinks and metro tickets.

There are a lot of options at that price. But the thing to remember is that there's no right or wrong way to do this. My mom never goes to the same place twice, my father has been going back to his favorite vacation spot every year for the last 15 years... it's all about how you enjoy life.

Cruising is familiar to you, and it's absolutely a smart idea to embrace that familiarity if you don't like the idea of figuring out a whole new city on your own, or don't want a bunch of stress when traveling solo.

[–] Normal_Coconut_2379 [ S ] 0 points 1 point 2 points 4 months ago   (0 children)

thank you for your thoughts. Great response.

[–] tealcandtrip 4 points 5 points 6 points 4 months ago   (0 children)

It can be, especially if you like the ports or just need an enforced disconnect from life for a week. Even when I cruise with my parents, I usually have at least a couple nights/meals to myself so they can do a date night. It’s never awkward, though I tend to avoid the main sitdown restaurants when I am by myself. I just prefer the quick service options.

Shows, pools, trivia, ship tour, excursions, lounging, all that I regularly see people chilling by themselves and have done by myself even when traveling in a group.

[–] Awanderingleaf 6 points 7 points 8 points 4 months ago   (0 children)

I would never do one of those giant city sized cruises solo or otherwise. I have done one cruise, solo or otherwise, and that was an 18 day expedition cruise through Chilean patagonia and Antarctica with Seabourn. 220 people onboard, no kids. All inclusive with the exception of a few excursions (free ones were available as well.) Kayaked in Chile and Antarctica. Hung out with penguins. Vibed with never ending cappaccinos.

[–] sigdiff 3 points 4 points 5 points 4 months ago   (0 children)

I LOVE solo cruising. I strongly recommend Norwegian cruise lines. They have custom designed solo rooms that allow access to a special solo cruiser lounge, and they do not charge a single supplement for that. There is also an activity coordinator specifically for solo cruisers, which is really helpful for you to meet people and make plans to see shows, go out to dinner, or whatever else. You don't have to participate in that, but I've made some really awesome friends doing it.

I've done 2 solo Norwegian cruises, and I'm going on a third in September. It's a great way to meet people if that's what you want to do, or do your own thing without having to pay a ridiculous fee just for being by yourself. Go to norwegian's website and search for solo cruises. Not all of their ships allow it, but most do now. And you can go almost anywhere. Also recently they've started allowing solo cruisers access to a limited number of regular rooms where you can have a larger room or a room with a balcony for example, and still get the solo benefits. Until this year, you could only book in the tiny solo rooms.

If you have any specific questions about the Norwegian solo cruises, feel free to DM me.

[–] Powerful_Chef_5683 2 points 3 points 4 points 4 months ago   (0 children)

Sometimes you gotta do shit solo just to figure out if it’s for you or not

[–] Mental-Judgment-9499 2 points 3 points 4 points 4 months ago   (0 children)

I solo cruise yearly and love it. I’m on no one’s time and prefer it that way

[–] thaisweetheart 0 points 1 point 2 points 4 months ago   (0 children)

Personally never been but I have heard virgin is a good cruise line solo because the have singles meet ups!!! If i did it would be something like that because my worst nightmare is to be on a cruise filled with littles families and kids (i like kids, just not the cruise vibe i go for)

[–] flyingcircusdog 0 points 1 point 2 points 4 months ago   (0 children)

I did a solo cruise to Alaska and it was overall great, with a few small cons. Food was good, excursions were easy to book and accommodate solos, and while the single supplement sucked I still was happy with what I paid. The only downside is I got a little bored on the last two sea days, which on Alaska are basically the ride back down to Seattle after you've seen all the ports and glaciers. I would gladly do it again, just bring some movies or games for the last few days. I don't think this will be a problem on a 4 night cruise.

[–] anoeba 0 points 1 point 2 points 4 months ago   (0 children)

If you want to try a solo cruise but aren't married to a specific date, search around for sales where the supplement is waived.

[–] arabesuku 0 points 1 point 2 points 4 months ago   (1 child)

Keep in mind that unlike most other places, you will likely be the only solo traveler there. If that doesn’t bother you, go for it. But I think as a first time solo traveler it might not be the best option.

[–] Gullible_Concept_428 0 points 1 point 2 points 4 months ago   (0 children)

I’ve done 5 solo cruises and am never the only solo traveler. On at least 2 of them there were at least 2 tables of solo travelers at my dinner time.

[–] RainOk8664 0 points 1 point 2 points 4 months ago   (0 children)

Maybe there are cruises designed for this sort of thing? I would have similar hesitations to you. But that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t do it! Otherwise a normal solo travel trip staying in hostels and you can still go to beach towns and such. Just remove the cruise part I guess

[–] HereForVibes27 0 points 1 point 2 points 4 months ago   (0 children)

I did a solo cruise to the Bahamas earlier this year and had a blast! I highly recommend it!!!

[–] Tacos314 0 points 1 point 2 points 4 months ago   (0 children)

I really like solo cruises, but I don't find a cruises to the Bahamas to be worth it if that's the only stop. I also find four days to be way to short to make a cruise worth the effort.

[–] ElysianRepublic 0 points 1 point 2 points 4 months ago   (0 children)

The idea has crossed my mind, but honestly, a cruise is my favorite type of family reunion trip and my least favorite type of solo trip.

Basically all cruisers are with someone else, doing other stuff, and not always open to socializing. You have to pay the double occupancy rate anyway, internet is spotty at best, etc.

Basically, in terms of social environment, the opposite of a good hostel, despite the ample activities.

[–] Blackavar89 0 points 1 point 2 points 4 months ago   (0 children)

I wouldn't recommend. Here in Europe they punish solo travelers, making them pay way too much. (I do not know what the US lines do). For some cruises Solo travelers are even excluded.

[–] [deleted] 0 points 1 point 2 points 4 months ago   (0 children)

Do it. I do solo trips everywhere often. It’s so nice to be free without debating on what to do etc.

I take solo cruises frequently. I live near a port so it’s a relatively inexpensive way to take a vacation when I just want to relax. I look for ones where I don’t have to pay 100% of the occupancy— it’s usually a “50% off the 2nd person” sale. There doesn’t have to be a 2nd person, it’s a discount on the price of the room.

There are always other solo travelers. Lots of people are willing to include the solos in activities so if I’ve gone to trivia or something I always get asked to join a table.

I like solo cruises because it gives me a few days to focus on doing only what I want. I spend most of my time taking care of others. It’s nice to have a break where everything is taken care of and I can just get some rest and relaxation.

I always get a room with a balcony. I like to sit outside in the morning and read and drink my coffee. At dinner, you can either eat in the dining room and they’ll put you at a table with other solo diners or you can just eat on the Lido deck.

Sometimes I do shore excursions and sometimes I don’t. It depends on my mood and whether I have already been to that port or not.

I think whether or not you will enjoy a solo cruise depends on your personality. I like spending time alone. I do not feel lonely when traveling by myself.

[–] RDRD35 0 points 1 point 2 points 4 months ago   (0 children)

Which cruise line are you planning to use?

[–] pb_sandiego 0 points 1 point 2 points 4 months ago   (0 children)

I have always wanted to go on a cruise but won’t do solo can I join u if the time is right

[–] Muted-Station2771 0 points 1 point 2 points 19 days ago   (0 children)

I'm going to try a solo cruise trip because I want to explore and try out new things by myself. I have no family close to where I live, yes I have friends from work and outside but now that I'm a widow I'd like to be more brave and be able to do things without relying on family or friends. Once I've done a solo cruise trip I'm sure I would feel better as a person. The bottom line is my happiness and enjoyment in life should not stop just because my husband passed away. I think I deserve a nice break in life.

I went on a solo cruise with Virgin Voyages and had a great time. I stayed at a solo no-window cabin where I spent most of my time inside watching movies, napping, writing, and reading books. I emerged only for mealtimes (and snacktimes), if I feel like going for a dip at the pool, and for the one class I signed up for.

We docked first at Puerto Plata in the Dominican Republic. I walked towards the town and must have said NO to the touts at least twenty times. I walked around and then came back to the ship about two hours later.

Our second stop was at Bimini in the Bahamas. It was just a beach, so I found a spot to sun myself, and again went back to the ship once I felt like I had enough sun.

My interactions were kept to a minimum—talking to fellow cruisers was fun though!—which I would not have any other way.

[–] PrunePlatoon 0 points 1 point 2 points 4 months ago   (0 children)

It sounds like hell. Literally anything else seems more appealing than a cruise to me so yeah maybe not the best person to chime in. The whole tacky, culture-less, environment destroying concept makes my skin crawl.

I only recommend the Bahamas if you are sailing on a small sailboat or some other small watercraft. It's the only way to experience the islands. Otherwise I would look for somewhere more affordable and of better general quality. Mexico and most Caribbean islands are more fun as a solo, the Bahamas is just... well it's shit unless you know what you're doing.

[–] lockdownsurvivor -1 points 0 points 1 point 4 months ago   (0 children)

I do not consider cruises to be solo travelling. One is just on a big boat with hundreds of the same people.

Why not just go to the Bahamas on your own?

The Southern states of the US are famous for their hospitality, and nowhere is that more true than in the charming coastal City of Mobile, Alabama .

It is one of the best places to travel alone in the US as you won’t have any trouble making friends with the locals here because it’s quite common for Mobilians to say hello and even strike up a conversation with strangers they pass on the street.

While I would personally say that Portland is less of a site-seeing city and more of a town to experience – that doesn’t mean there isn’t plenty to do there! This City’s vibe is off the charts.

When you first arrive, head over to  Forest Park   – the City’s most prominent. Walk around the miles of trails in beautiful evergreen woods before finishing at the Pittock Mansion for one of the best views of Portland and Mt. Hood.

Best places to travel alone in the US

When you’ve walked yourself hungry, you can head to any of the great food truck pods (or take a food tour!) around Portland’s trendy neighbourhoods.

The  Pearl District, Mississippi, Hawthorne,  and  Alberta  are all great areas to just walk through and appreciate the weird but awesome (and very different) vibes.

After this, you can head to the local brewpub for one of the best craft beer scenes you can come across. Also, if you come during the summer, definitely check out the  local farmer’s markets .

Where to stay in Portland?

There are plenty of great accommodation options, but I’d recommend staying in the Pearl District at the McMenamins Crystal Hotel . When you get up the next morning, be sure to walk the three blocks to get your classic Blue Star Doughnuts.

Bayfield, Wisconsin

A town in Northern Wisconsin that is often overseen is Bayfield, which is one of the best places to travel alone in the US.

Bayfield is the gateway to one of the most scenic National Parks in Wisconsin:  the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore .

Also, home to  Madeline Island  and the  Apostle Islands , Bayfield is known as the crown jewel of the Bayfield Peninsula. Bayfield is thus mostly a city for solo travel if you are an outdoor lover.

From here you can set out and explore the beaches of the area, discover the sea caves, rent a kayak or do one of the endless hikes. The City is entirely safe, and thus it’s perfect for solo travelers.

Other things to do here are camping, fishing, visiting pristine orchards and fine dining. No wonder that visiting Bayfield is often considered as one of the  best things to do in Northern Wisconsin .

Don’t forget to do a city walk through Bayfield and fall in love with the historic character of the town. A number are listed on the National Register of historical sites.

Where to stay in Bayfield?

There are plenty of excellent places to choose from in Bayfield. Some of the recommended options are Old Rittenhouse Inn and Pinehurst Inn Bed & Breakfast .

ENJOY THE OUTDOORS IN BOULDER, COLORADO

If you love adventure, one of the best places to travel alone in the US is Boulder, located in the beautiful state of Colorado.

We discovered Boulder on our  Colorado road trip , and it quickly made an impression on us as a hip mountain town with lots of things to do.

Do you know? Boulder is also the home of over 45,000 acres of  designated trails, perfect for hiking or cycling . Just a short while away is the iconic  Rocky Mountain National Park, perfect for Ziplining   and many ski hills.

You could spend a lifetime exploring the mountainous regions around Boulder – it’s truly a one-of-a-kind area.

It is one of the best places for solo travelers in the USA as they can enjoy the plethora of tours Boulder has to offer , the abundance of entertainment options, great hiking, and shopping.

Pearl Street Mall  is where the centre of the action happens in Boulder. It is a hub of restaurants, shops, and street performers.

If you are visiting Boulder for the first time, I highly recommend joining this private guided tour of the highlights of Boulder , where a local expert will show you the best of the city, including Pearl Street Mall, Hotel Boulderado, and Boulder Theater.

Tours of the craft beer scene often descend on the Pearl Street Mall and are a great way for solo travelers to meet other visitors.

Asheville, North Carolina

Asheville in North Carolina is one of the best places to travel alone in the US. Downtown Asheville is busy, arty and bourgeois bohemian.

Pedestrians bump against each other along narrow sidewalks past fair-trade and organic clothing boutiques, crowded cafes, a Three Dog Bakery, and street performers including the ‘World’s Most Okayist’ poet.

The printed page beckons at the  Battery Park Book Exchange and Champagne Bar  – three levels of towering stacks, a coffee counter, cheeseboards at tables among the books, and brunch on the patio.

Dog friendly too. Want to see it all without walking? Greyline Trolley Tours offers a hop-on-hop-off 75-minute round-trip tour of Asheville .

Recommended tour: Asheville Insider Guided Walking Tour

Downtown is cool, but the crowning jewel at Asheville’s edge is the  Biltmore Estates , a six-story castle, built in 1895 by George Vanderbilt. It took six years to construct.

With indoor plumbing, electricity, heating and 43 bathrooms (all unheard of at the time), it was the most technologically advanced house in the country.

Best places to travel alone in the US

Biltmore Estates isn’t only a historic house – it’s a destination. Property around the house is massive: acres of gardens, riding trails (yes, horses on-site), a tourist village with shops and taverns.

Two hotels and a winery complete this entrepreneurial endeavour. In the 1930s, the Vanderbilt family opened the property to visitors (to finance the upkeep), and it’s still owned by family members living somewhere onsite.

Where to stay in Asheville?

One of the best places to stay in Asheville would be Red Roof Inn Asheville West located conveniently.

Travelling Alone: Reddit Users Give Top Tips For Solo Travel

Beat the blues.

Travelling Alone: Reddit Users Give Top Tips For Solo Travel

Credit: YakobchukOlena

Whether you’re clutching a backpack in the middle of the Sahara or feeling invisible in a party hostel, it’s rare you’ll find someone who enjoys the ‘clutch moments’ of being lonely. And while getting the blues can lead to increased confidence once the ordeal is over, in those bleak moments it can be hard to remember why you put yourself in the situation in the first place.

Fortunately for any solitary travellers out there, a trending thread in Reddit’s r/solotravel community has some smart advice on how to beat lonliness while travelling.

“I embark on my first solo journey next week,” Reddit user ‘Canvaseyes’ recently posted. “After being on this and similar threads for a few days (and especially in the wake of covid), I think it’s time to have a broad discussion. This will apply more broadly than to just our solo travels, but given I’m about to depart on one, I could benefit from the focused discussion.”

The topic of discussion? Loneliness.

“Have you experienced profound loneliness, especially if on the road? How did you manage it? Especially if you’re someone who is single/without involved family or even a like-minded friend group. Any advice on how to really settle into yourself while solo traveling, or even in the aftermath of it?”

“For those of us still figuring it out: Where are you at with your feelings of connection? Any thoughts or concerns? Anything we can help you with?” the author of the thread added.

The best insight, we’d argue, was buried in response to these questions, halfway down the thread: “There will be times on your trip when you’ll feel lonely. When that happens take a second to try and relax, to understand what makes you feel that way right then, and that’s it’s okay to feel that.”

“You could try not to think too much about it when those thoughts cross your mind. I find moments like those helpful for understanding myself better.”

View this post on Instagram   A post shared by Matt Kepnes | Nomadic Matt (@nomadicmatt) on Jun 23, 2020 at 1:07pm PDT

Another interesting insight, courtesy of another user, is that being physically alone isn’t the only thing that can make you feel lonely: “I never felt lonely when I was on a solo trip. But felt lonely when traveling with friends. I think it has a lot to do with expectations.”

Another solo traveller lent their advice to others, writing: “A big part of enjoying travel is not trying to see everything. Instead try to really enjoy what you are experiencing in the moment. If you didn’t hit everything you planned for, you have a reason to come back.”

Not to mention: there are various benefits to being the master of your own itinerary, which the same user pointed out: “After the joy of solo travel, I could never again subject myself to a 6am wakeup and run for a tour bus. That’s not pleasure, that’s a morning commute!”

Another user touted the benefits of going with the flow – a broader travel tip which can help you avoid bouts of loneliness too: “Sometimes the best parts are when things don’t work out as expected. A few years ago I was camping my way around Iceland, and the forecast one rainy day was for 90kph+ winds. I managed to get the last hostel bed in the country that night, and although I had to skip a planned stop to make it to the hostel, the experience at that hostel changed the way I travel, and I wouldn’t change it for the world.”

View this post on Instagram   A post shared by Ciara | Solo Female Travel (@hey_ciara) on Aug 31, 2020 at 10:30pm PDT

Another said, in their experience, lowering your expectations on socialisation when travelling at the beginning of the trip can help too: “When I am on a solo trip, I do not expect engaging with anyone socially. Which in a way, makes me open to anyone approaching me.”

“A short conversation feels like a lot. And, if that short conversation leads to having a meal or a drink or a destination visit, it feels great. Like 0 to 100. After that, I can just go back to my solitude state.”

Of course, being Reddit, a few users took the chance to brag. It wasn’t all hot air though; in doing so they revealed another way to find social connections when travelling: dating apps (and staying in the right kind of accommodation).

“I’ve travelled solo extensively and never felt lonely, but I’m very comfortable being alone. I view it as a positive, not a negative. But I also enjoy being in the company of others when I feel like it, and that’s always available via hostels and Tinder.”

This then led into a discussion around how to make your Tinder profile more attractive as a traveller, with the key insights, from one Tinder using traveller, is to come across as interesting, authentic, and self-sufficient.

“My personal advice is to make your profile interesting, especially if you’re into travelling, have someone (for example a couple you photographed) snap a pic of you in front of a nice view too.”

The key themes of a successful profile? According to this Reddit user: “action, beautiful nature and fun.”

“It’s exciting to meet someone who’s self-sufficient enough and capable of making travel plans and executing them successfully. Also show your main interests (Are you a foodie? Do you love coffee/ music/ dance? Bikepacker, backpacker? Ride horses? Love a certain destination? We want to kinda get an advertisement for you if that makes sense) I (now 22f) personally was on Tinder for the sole purpose of finding travel buddies (my parents didn’t want to let me go alone when I was younger) and with reasonable success.”

“You can’t go wrong with a picture with a large dog, some active sport activity (your face/body can look like crap here, all that matters is the fun/excitement and joy you’re having) (water-splashing pictures such as water-skiing, rafting or bathing in waterfalls always made good contrast) picture in front of a scenic panorama or with children in a foreign country,” the same user added.

Bringing the discussion back to travel, further users discussed the kinds of trips that made them loneliest.

View this post on Instagram   A post shared by Matt Kepnes | Nomadic Matt (@nomadicmatt) on Sep 4, 2020 at 9:02am PDT

“I have been traveling for 5 years, and the only time I felt lonely, like really lonely, was when I spent 10 months in Australia living in a campervan by myself.” There was a silver lining though, they said, to being lonely – personal growth.

“It was a very tough year, but it was very enlightening too. As hard as it was to be so alone most of the time, I recommend everyone to, at least once in your life, spend a couple of months alone, with minimum contact with other people, like a personal retreat. You will learn things about yourself that you couldn’t if you never do it, it was such a hard and dark time in my life, but I was always hopeful because I was choosing the way I was living, and now I understand why it happened.”

“You will feel stronger than ever, afraid of nothing, you will realize that you can be happy by yourself, you don’t need people anymore, so your relationships will be a lot healthier, no attachments. When something or someone is not good for you, you will leave right then and there, because you are not afraid of loneliness, you can easily let go of anything or anyone.”

Finally, one user’s comment sums the thread up well: “Keep yourself busy exploring the place… Initiate contact… [And] solitude isn’t for everyone.”

12 best solo trips in the US for 2024

Tarah Chieffi

Editor's Note

Traveling solo is one of life's greatest adventures. Freedom, flexibility, empowerment and reflection are just some of the reasons to plan a solo trip.

Over the last decade, solo travel stereotypes have evolved from gap year students backpacking the Gringo Trail in South America to trips encompassing a wide variety of travel themes, experiences and budgets.

With the rise of the digital nomad, greater connectivity via social media and a growing "what am I waiting for?" mindset that tends to occur during tumultuous times, solo travel looks poised to be one of this year's biggest trends. More than 50% of travelers are looking to plan a solo adventure in 2024, and married women are one of the largest drivers of the market, according to a recent Skift report .

Whether you choose to travel as part of a group tour or independently, it's never been easier (or more affordable) to chart your own course. Many hefty single supplements are now being waived or reduced for both overland journeys and cruises .

For first-time solo travelers , there are plenty of U.S. destinations that combine easy access, relative affordability, welcoming vibes and diverse experiences to help streamline a solo vacation. This enables you to step out of your comfort zone and experience travel in a new way.

With that in mind, here are 12 of our favorite destinations for solo travel in the U.S. for 2024.

San Luis Obispo, California

solo travel us reddit

Best for: Surfing by day, wine tasting by night

Equidistant from San Francisco and Los Angeles , San Luis Obispo County combines lush scenery, coastal adventures, historic charm and superb wine-tasting within a relatively small and easy-to-navigate area. Often referred to as "Little Santa Barbara," the city is a charming, laid-back stopover for solo travelers embarking on a Pacific Coast Highway road trip.

The unpretentious downtown area is studded with historic landmarks, including the 18th-century San Luis Obispo de Tolosa Mission, now a museum housing artifacts from Native American and Mission-era history. Foodies should time their stay with the bustling farmers market (Thursday from 6 to 9 p.m.), where more than 100 vendors purvey a bounty of farm-fresh produce, flowers and even farm-to-table dinners.

Downtown SLO's welcoming wine bars and tasting rooms are a cozy backdrop for solo travelers looking to make new friends. They provide a fun initiation into coastal California's prized pinot noir and chardonnay varieties.

Just a 10-minute drive from town, family-owned vineyards and tasting rooms dot the lush rolling hills of the Edna Valley. Some 30 miles north, the Paso Robles wine region is often touted as an affordable and more laid-back dupe for Napa.

At Pismo Beach, adventure lovers can surf, boogie board or ride an ATV across the largest swath of coastal dunes in California. This classic California beach town is surrounded by the Pismo Preserve, which provides sanctuary to owls, hawks, peregrine falcons and other wildlife.

Where to stay

If you are looking for a coastal base for exploration, the Vespera Resort on Pismo Beach, an Autograph Collection property, has reasonable room rates for its prime beachfront position. Rooms start at $344 or 65,000 Marriott Bonvoy points per night.

Best for: History buffs

From its crucial role in the Revolutionary War to longstanding icons like Fenway Park, Quincy Market and its many museums, Boston hosts a wealth of attractions for solo travelers who fancy themselves history buffs.

For a firsthand look at Boston's early days, step onto The Freedom Trail , a walking tour of 16 sites that played integral roles in the birth of our nation. You can continue your exploration in some of Boston's historic neighborhoods, including Beacon Hill and the North End (Boston's Little Italy).

If you plan to spend an evening cheering on the Boston Red Sox, staying at The Verb Hotel (starting at $431 per night) will put you within walking distance of Fenway.

Or, for a points-friendly option, book a room at The Liberty, A Luxury Collection Hotel , where rates start at $275 or 53,000 Marriott Bonvoy points per night. The building once served as the home of Boston's Charles Street Jail, and you can dine among the preserved jail cell facades at the hotel's restaurant, Clink.

Santa Fe, New Mexico

Best for: Artistic enlightenment

Santa Fe has long been a haven for solo travelers in search of spiritual fulfillment and ethereal natural wonders. Nestled beneath the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, the sacred ruins, shrines, New Age institutes and yoga centers offer healing and enlightenment for those at a crossroads in life.

As one of the world's greatest art centers, the New Mexico capital is celebrated for its rich tricultural heritage (Puebloan, Spanish and Anglo-American), vibrant arts scene and striking adobe architecture.

Art lovers can spend a day perusing the galleries and artisan studios lining Canyon Road. Then, they can head to an open-air concert at the world-famous Santa Fe Opera, which draws opera devotees from all across the globe.

Santa Fe's mystical desert landscapes are immortalized by the late painter Georgia O'Keeffe, the "Mother of American Modernism." The Georgia O'Keeffe Museum, housed in a former Baptist church, holds the world's largest repository of the late artist's works.

The city has also become a mainspring for innovative Southwestern flavors and cuisine, and you can find some of the West's most acclaimed restaurants here.

Marriott loyalists can earn and burn points at the pueblo-inspired La Posada de Santa Fe , a Tribute Portfolio Resort & Spa. From 54,000 points or $332 per night, you can stroll freely over its 6 acres while still being close to downtown's cultural attractions.

For those looking to indulge, the Auberge-affiliated Bishop's Lodge features luxurious rooms with traditional kiva fireplaces. It offers a number of experiences perfect for solo travelers, such as the Healing Art Journey designed to eliminate inner stress. Plus, a resident "chile host" helps gourmands find the perfect pepper and chili oil combination to accompany their meal.

Rates start from $749, but the hotel is currently offering a third-night-free promotion (until April 30), which brings the rate down to $500 plus taxes and fees.

Asheville, North Carolina

solo travel us reddit

Best for: Hiking, biking and beer

Asheville truly has it all for outdoor enthusiasts. You can hike and mountain bike trails through the hazy vistas of the Blue Ridge Mountains (the city provides a " hike finder " to help you find the perfect trail) and paddle down the French Broad River. Or, simply check out Asheville's outdoor shopping districts, like the River Arts District or Biltmore Park, by foot. (Shopping counts as cardio in my book.)

When it's time for some apres-hike brews and bites, head to one of Asheville's breweries. There are plenty to choose from, but Wicked Weed and Hi-Wire top the list for spots to satisfy your thirst and hunger in a fun setting.

For an upscale boutique stay in downtown Asheville, check into The Foundry Hotel , a Curio Collection by Hilton property that starts at $362 or 76,000 Hilton Honors points per night. Another solid option, the budget-friendly Hotel Indigo Asheville Downtown starts at $135 or 27,000 IHG One Rewards points per night.

New Orleans

solo travel us reddit

Best for: Live music and livelier crowds

Even if you visit the Big Easy by yourself, you are never truly alone. Whether you're vibing with the throngs of tourists on Bourbon Street, standing in line for beignets at Cafe du Monde or learning about the city's rich history on a group walking tour, you're likely to be surrounded by friendly faces with similar interests (and a taste for powdered-sugar-covered fried dough).

If you've never been to New Orleans , make time to hit up hot spots like Pat O'Briens for a rum-soaked hurricane; Central Grocery, where the famous muffuletta sandwich was invented; and Preservation Jazz Hall for live jazz. If you still have time during your trip, venture farther from the French Quarter to City Park and Mardi Gras World. Or, take a guided tour of New Orleans' hauntingly beautiful mausoleums.

For a hotel that's close but not too close to the French Quarter, stay at The Eliza Jane (starting at $150 or 28,000 IHG One Rewards points per night) or the Kimpton Hotel Fontenot (starting at $150 or 17,000 World of Hyatt points per night) — two of New Orleans' many points-friendly hotels .

Best for: Music lovers and foodies

The Texas state capital is known for many things — delicious barbecue, a stellar music scene, gorgeous green spaces, lakes where you can stay active and the world's largest urban colony of bats, to name a few. Visiting Austin as a solo traveler is convenient because there are various neighborhoods you can visit to enjoy dining, drinks and entertainment all in one place.

Sixth Street closes down to traffic on weekends and is a great spot for creative cocktails and neon-lit music venues. For something a little more laid back, head to Rainey Street. Also, South Congress, with its unique boutiques and variety of dining options, is a must-visit for both locals and tourists.

Zilker Park puts more than 350 acres of outdoor fun at your fingertips. You can swim in the spring-fed Barton Springs Pool, explore on a rented bike or canoe, or time your visit to annual events like the Austin City Limits Music Festival or the Austin Kite Festival.

Some of the best points hotels in Austin are close to downtown. This includes The Driskill, a World of Hyatt property starting at $369 or 21,000 World of Hyatt points per night, and the Austin Proper Hotel , which starts at $400 or 42,000 Marriott Bonvoy points per night.

Zion National Park, Utah

solo travel us reddit

Best for: Breathtaking scenery and an accessible gateway town

One of the nation's most popular national parks, Zion makes for an awe-inspiring solo adventure with breathtaking landscapes, epic hiking and bike trails and fascinating wildlife.

In terms of transportation logistics, accessibility and accommodation offerings, planning a trip to Zion National Park is relatively straightforward. The gateway for exploration is charming Springdale, a small town just steps from the park's main entrance that has maintained its quirky vibe despite its soaring popularity.

Amid the winding canyon of sandstone buttresses, sheer red-rock cliffs and slot canyons, you'll find lush evergreen forests, kaleidoscopic wildflowers and mystical hanging gardens. If you are short on time, the Zion Canyon Scenic Drive (accessible only by shuttle bus from March through October) provides a glorious glimpse of the park's red rocks and easy access to several visitor-approved trailheads.

Angels Landing is an iconic hike you won't want to miss. Not for the faint of heart, some 21 hair-raising switchbacks, built into the rift, weave their way to Scout Lookout, which affords jaw-dropping panoramas of Zion Canyon.

Due to increased popularity, hikers need to enter a lottery in order to secure a permit. Depending on your fitness level (and traffic on the trail), it takes between three and five hours to ascend the canyon's east wall.

Just 1 mile from the park's entrance, the SpringHill Suites Springdale Zion National Park is one of the brand's finest iterations. The property offers modern, well-equipped suites that are both large and comfortable; it also offers complimentary breakfast every day and an outdoor pool with phenomenal views of Zion National Park. As a Bonvoy property, you can expect to redeem 40,000 to 60,000 points here; or you can use a 50,000-point Marriott certificate for a lower-rate stay. Cash rates generally start at $275 a night.

Another option is the luxe tents provided at Under Canvas' glamping site in nearby Virgin. The 60 luxe tents and suites come in different sizes and layouts, but all are kitted out with plush king-size beds, en suite bathrooms with hot showers and organic products, and in-tent wood-burning stoves. Rates start from $399 per night.

Portland, Oregon

solo travel us reddit

Best for: Exploring the unique landscape of the Pacific Northwest

Portland is surrounded by natural beauty on all sides. Though the city lies in a valley, you can often see Mount Hood, Mount St. Helens and the towering green firs and pines surrounding it. To best enjoy these natural wonders, visit Powell Butte for panoramic mountain views or the outlook behind Pittock Mansion for city views with Mount Hood in the background.

You'd be remiss to skip all things weird and wonderful within Portland's city limits. Voracious readers could spend hours in Powell's City of Books, the country's largest independent bookstore. There's also the outdoor Portland Saturday Market , which is considered the largest continually operating arts and crafts market in the country. The city has so many food carts it created a handy guide to help you find exactly what you're hungry for.

Many of Portland's hotels reflect the city's unique style. Choose the Kimpton Hotel Vintage Portland (starting at $170 or 32,000 IHG One Rewards points per night) or The Nines Hotel Portland (starting at $230 or 43,000 Marriott Bonvoy points per night), both downtown.

Best for: A mix of beach days and California history

San Diego is home to many beautiful beaches, but there's more to do than just spend lazy days in the sand (though I wouldn't blame you if you didn't leave the beach during your visit).

This year, the city is especially primed for discovery, as it has been designated the World Design Capital for 2024, along with Tijuana, Mexico. It's the first time that two neighboring cities in two different countries have shared the distinction. Both cities will celebrate the designation through unique experiences, events and festivals.

Many of San Diego's best-known attractions are in Balboa Park, including the San Diego Zoo, the San Diego Natural History Museum, the San Diego Air & Space Museum, and many splendid gardens and recreational areas.

About 2 miles west of Balboa Park on San Diego Bay is the USS Midway Museum , where you can learn about historic naval aircraft and helicopters on board the USS Midway aircraft carrier. Old Town San Diego — the first European settlement in California — and the Gaslamp Quarter are also worth peeling yourself away from the beach for.

If you prefer to stay close to downtown and the bay, reserve a room at the Embassy Suites by Hilton San Diego Bay Downtown , where rates start at $269 or 67,000 Hilton Honors points per night. If you want to be closer to the beach, head to the famed Hotel del Coronado . Expect nightly prices to start at $400 or 95,000 Hilton Honors points.

Best for: Legendary country music

From the 4,000-seat Grand Ole Opry to the rows of bars with live music along Lower Broadway, you are never too far from legendary country stars and up-and-coming crooners when you visit Nashville.

However, Nashville isn't only a hotbed of honky tonk. It's also where music fans go to immerse themselves in the history of country music. You can pay homage to the greats like Patsy Cline and Johnny Cash at the Country Music Hall of Fame. Or, you can visit RCA Studio B, where stars like Elvis Presley and Dolly Parton recorded country classics.

Nashville is also well known for its shopping scene. Visit The District in downtown Nashville for everything from record albums to cowboy boots. Then, head to the shops in Hillsboro Village or Gulch for local and nationally known fashion and accessory brands.

Sedona, Arizona

Best for: Reconnecting with nature

There are few places in the U.S. with more spectacular scenery than Sedona. Surrounded by striking red-rock buttes and majestic canyons, this desert destination is an ideal spot for communing with nature.

For some, that could mean a solitary day of hiking at the picturesque Bell Rock. Others may prefer a more spiritual experience like a yoga hiking tour of Sedona .

Sedona's art scene is as vibrant as its landscape. Peruse shops and galleries in the Tlaquepaque Arts and Crafts Village or the Sedona Artist Market. On the first Friday of every month , many galleries stay open into the evening, hosting special artist receptions and other events.

The Hilton Sedona Resort at Bell Rock (starting at $285 or 53,000 Hilton Honors points per night) is about as close as you can get to Sedona's best hiking trails. 31 BEST Places in the USA for Solo Female Travelers in 2024

06/20/2024 by Kristin Addis 28 Comments

The United States is gorgeous, from sea to shining sea. I love being from such a huge and varied country with all kinds of landscapes, cultures, and sights.

I’ve traveled to over 65 countries over the past decade, most of them alone, which only makes me appreciate the USA more. There’s nothing in the world quite like it.

Here are some of my favorite places for solo female travel in the USA, plus the advice of several other solo women travelers to get you started:

Table of Contents

1. Maui, Hawai’i

best places in usa for solo female travelers

I forgive you if you don’t think of Hawai’i when you think of great places to travel solo, and I wouldn’t have either until I actually went to Maui alone last year. It was fantastic! There was so much to do, from taking lessons at a women’s surf school to driving the Road to Hana and joining snorkeling trips.

I thought honeymooners would surround me, but I actually found that people were very outgoing and friendly, coupled off or not. So, all in all, I highly recommend going to Hawai’i solo , much to my surprise! If you are visiting for the first time, find out which island is the best for you .

Book your stay in Maui here.

2. The Big Island of Hawai’i

best places in usa for solo female travelers

While most people go to the more tourist-heavy islands like Oahu , the Big Island of Hawai’i is well worth considering instead. With volcanoes, world-class diving and snorkeling sites , interesting beaches, and miles of hiking trails, there’s more to discover than on any other island in the state. In fact, it’s larger than all of them, combined!

After visiting more than six times, my favorite things to do on the Big Island are swimming with the manta rays at night in Kona , hiking to the Captain Cook memorial, and joining boat tours.

It’s also one of the best places for adventurous solo female travelers. It’s easy to meet friends through activities, at the beach, and by going on day tours. On top of that, the island is easy to navigate with a rental car, as there is one main road that circles it.

Book your stay on The Big Island here , or consider staying in a real treehouse (!).

3. Alabama Hills, California

alabama hills sunrise

The Alabama Hills is Bureau of Land Management (BLM) land, meaning it’s owned by the public, with arches, beautiful views of the eastern Sierras , and lots of Hollywood history. I did a solo road trip here and enjoyed every minute of it.

If you are a photography lover , the Alabama Hills have plenty of photogenic stops, including the popular Movie Road (pictured above), Mobius Arch (go at sunset!), Boot Arch, and Miss Alabama herself.

As a solo traveler, you’ll get lots of solitude in the Alabama Hills and the other parts of my California deserts road trip , which I loved. Among the beautiful things about traveling in this part of the world are all the wide-open spaces and the spiritual vibe. Plus, you can’t beat the stargazing or the sunsets!

4. San Francisco, California

best places in usa for solo female travelers

Whenever people who aren’t from the state visit California , almost everyone ends up falling in love with San Francisco. As a native Southern Californian, it’s in my DNA to roll my eyes and find this offensive, but deep down, I silently agree. The Bay Area in general is beautiful and temperate and has a unique culture. My European friends often say it has a charm that reminds them of home.

I love it for the ease of getting around on the BART system, how small and contained the city itself is, and how picturesque and multicultural it is. Try a yoga or meditation class, head there during Pride, or see some live music at the Outside Lands Festival.

Other than that, San Francisco is the perfect place to jump off from or end up in when on a road trip along the Pacific Coast Highway too!

Book your stay in San Francisco here.

5. Big Sur, California

mcway falls

I’ve looked on every continent, and I still haven’t found anywhere as beautiful or majestic as Big Sur on the central coast of California, though it’s seen its fair share of disasters lately. Still, when accessible, McWay Falls in Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park is one of the dreamiest waterfalls I’ve seen.

Big Sur is a fantastic place to unwind. If you want to meet others, the campsites can be pretty social. However, when I’m out there, I find the best companions are the dolphins and whales jumping out of the gorgeous Pacific Ocean, and the squirrels and deer on the trails.

For more on my favorite state and national parks in California, check out my musings on Alamo’s Scenic Route.

6. Lake Tahoe, California

lake tahoe sand harbor overlook

One of my favorite spots to explore on my own is in my backyard: Lake Tahoe ! There are nearly limitless trails to discover here during the summer months, including Tallac , which is pictured above. Emerald Bay in the south of Lake Tahoe, also offers great hiking opportunities.

For those who don’t feel comfortable hiking or biking on their own, there are multiple companies that offer guided tours .

If you don’t like hiking, it’s good to know that there are many other things to do in Lake Tahoe . You can take pictures at some of the most beautiful parts of the lake , for example, or if you’re visiting Lake Tahoe in winter, you can go skiing or sledding.

Need a place to stay? We’ve got you covered with a list of the best Airbnbs and boutique hotels .

7. Mendocino, California

mendocino headlands state park

If you’re looking for moody coastline, crashing waves, spotted seals, incredible sunsets, adorable BnBs (with my favorite being the Sacred Rock Inn and Brewery Gulch Inn ), and an abundance of inspiration, Mendocino is the perfect spot for a weekend getaway.

This is more of a retreat for those who want some peace and quiet. Walk along the coastal bluffs, explore Van Damme State Park, check out the glass-sand beach in Fort Bragg, and eat delicious food at the Noyo Harbor Inn.

8. Mt. Rainier National Park, Washington

mount rainier national park pinnacle peak

When it comes to national parks in Washington , Mount Rainier is easily my favorite. It’s such a prominent volcano that you can see it from most major freeways and suburbs of Seattle. Hiking around it is also easy enough, with trails like the Skyline serving up beautiful views all along your way. It’s a popular national park, so if you’re hiking solo , you’ll rarely be truly alone.

9. Seattle, Washington

best places in usa for solo female travelers

If you want to visit a city teeming with activity but still find time for solitude, head to Seattle, where the various neighborhoods and activities provide opportunities for both, sometimes even on the same day.

Here you’ll find cultural foods , fantastic museums , and beautiful public parks. Talented local musicians perform throughout the city on most nights, so you can catch jazz, experimental, rock, punk, metal, baroque, blues, and hip-hop.

You can navigate the city via public transit by day, or taxi or ride-share by night. Seattle is very solo-traveler-friendly, so you’ll notice other people dining and enjoying the musical ambiance alone. Don’t hesitate to reach out and get past that “Seattle Freeze,” as people are friendly once you start the conversation.

Book your stay in Seattle here.

10. Portland, Oregon

best places in usa for solo female travelers

The beauty of Portland is that a solo traveler can be as social as they’d like in the city and then retreat to the forest for solitude at any time. The city is just a short drive from the Columbia River Gorge , where you’ll find the majestic Multnomah Falls, among others.

In town, you’ll enjoy bearing witness to all of Portland’s quirks, like its quintessential donut scene . Biking is quite popular too; you can join in on the cycling fun by taking a bike tour that focuses on the city’s vibrant art and poetry culture.

11. Las Vegas, Nevada

best places in usa for solo female travelers

Las Vegas wouldn’t have been the first place that I would have expected to be awesome traveling alone, but with so much to do, it’s actually perfect! People are in a good mood here. They’re there to be social and have a good time. I almost always make friends when I visit, whether with a group or by myself.

There are fun indoor activities, like the famous wax museum, Madame Tussaud’s , and there’s so much to see that isn’t on the strip, like the Grand Canyon and Hoover Dam . (These are my favorite day trips to take from Las Vegas .)

Las Vegas is also an excellent jumping-off point if you want to explore Reno (next on this list). You can plan your Highway 95 road trip based on this guide .

It’s also a great spot to start if you’re doing a bigger American Southwest road trip , which was one of my first big solo road trips , including Utah and Arizona .

12. Reno, Nevada

best places in usa for solo female travelers

My current hometown , Reno is truly the biggest little city in the world. Because of it’s pretty small size but excellent amenities, it’s a wonderful place to travel alone. It’s a hub for those looking to get lucky at casinos, and a great spot for events like the hot-air balloon race each September, when hundreds take to the sky. Thanks to the art, food, and culture boom of the last decade, there are tons of funky little cafés and restaurants as well.

If you love nature, there’s a place for outdoorsy people who want to hike or ski in and around Lake Tahoe too. Along the extraordinary lake, you’ll find bobcats, migratory birds, hiking trails, majestic mountains, and if you head into the Black Rock desert , salt pans, sand dunes, brilliant stars, and hundred-year-old trees. In Reno, you’ll have the time and space to take it all in.

13. Page, Arizona

arizona itinerary

Page is the jumping-off point for several of Arizona’s most beautiful places. I was blown away in particular by Horseshoe Bend and of course the famous Antelope Canyon. If you’re considering which of the two canyons to visit, I did a comparison of Lower and Upper Antelope Canyon , though both are worth checking out for different reasons!

Since this part of the world attracts so many travelers, I found it easy to have conversations with others who were free-camping with me and even made a friend when I ventured to the paid campsites for a shower (but not in the shower itself — we met in the parking lot later, I swear!).

Book your stay in Page, Arizona, here.

See tours available in Page here.

14. Moab, Utah

utah things to do

Utah is one of my favorite states to road-trip through solo . I’ve done it twice, and I’d do it again!

Although Zion National Park is gorgeous, and I love the national forests around Provo, it’s Moab that I find the best as a solo female traveler. It’s a mecca for outdoor enthusiasts. There is a multitude of parks, like Canyonlands and Arches National Parks , as well as Dead Horse Point State Park . Basically, it’s one of the most beautiful areas on earth, with a high concentration of incredible rock formations and free campsites, and plenty of things to do .

I find that when a place attracts people because of common interests, especially something outdoorsy, it tends to be social. Moab is no exception. It’s a favorite among van-lifers, which means you’ll have plenty of opportunities to meet others on the trails, in cafés, and at viewpoints .

Book your stay in Moab here.

15. Sun Valley, Idaho

best places in usa for solo female travelers

Idaho really must be one of the most beautiful states in the wintertime , when I stayed here and fell in love with the natural hot springs, the tranquil views, the spectacular sunsets, and snowmobiling when my legs were too tired from the fantastic snowshoeing and skiing around this quaint town.

Sun Valley locals are also more than happy to have a conversation with visitors and newcomers.

If you want to venture outside of Sun Valley , there are many amazing hot springs , like my favorite, Kirkham , to check out. You can find my Idaho itinerary here .

Book your stay in Idaho here , or stay in a cozy, heated treehouse !

16. Glacier National Park, Montana

glacier national park things to do lake mcdonald

Glacier National Park in Montana is a magical slice of outdoor heaven that is perfect for solo travelers with an adventurous spirit and who thrive in solitude. Here you’ll find crystal-clear lakes, abundant greenery as far as the eye can see, and some of the best stargazing in the US.

If you’re into hiking, you will be happy to hear that there are plenty of hikes in Glacier National Park too.

Don’t be intimidated by the park’s size, because it’s totally doable to visit for just a couple of days. Check out everything you can do in Glacier National Park in just 48 hours for inspiration.

17. Santa Fe, New Mexico

Santa Fe seems like the more upscale, artsy, and design-focused part of New Mexico — and I love it! While other areas of the state have their own character, Santa Fe serves up that quintessential Southwestern vibe that most people picture when they think of New Mexico.

This is where you’ll find some of the finest restaurants, the Georgia O’Keeffe Museum, and the IAIA Museum of Contemporary Native Arts (MoCNA). The Meow Wolf Museum is a trippy wonderland, and the galleries of Canyon Road had me enchanted. It’s a solo traveler’s paradise, with many awesome things to do.

18. Bayfield, Wisconsin

apostle islands

Midwesterners are known for being friendly, and they lived up to their reputation when I visited Bayfield, Wisconsin. It’s an artsy town with outgoing residents, and it’s small enough that it feels intimate, yet big enough that there is plenty to do. I visited in August , and it was the perfect time to join a kayaking or boat trip, or take a drive around to the various orchards.

There are plenty of beaches and quirky hangouts as well, and camping opportunities abound. If you visit in December , January , or February , the famous caves ice over, which looks incredible. If you’re into photography and the outdoors, then you will absolutely love this little town on Lake Superior, the jumping-off point for the Apostle Islands .

19. Chicago, Illinois

best places in usa for solo female travelers

Visiting such a large city solo gives you a sense of anonymity that can be exciting. When I lived in Chicago, Illinois , I loved going on solo adventures all over town and discovering cultural gems, quirky restaurants, and unexpected museums.

Each neighborhood in Chicago has a personality of its own, filled with endless adventures. Whether you’re staying for a couple of days or a few weeks, you can be sure that Chicago lives up to the hype of being one of the most fascinating cities in the country (and it’s safe too).

No matter if you visit during the frigid winter or the lively summer, don’t miss out on an architecture boat tour — Chicago is bursting with history, and many stories come to the surface through its unique architectural history. You can also take a tour of the legendary Art Institute of Chicago before opening hours, for a VIP experience.

I recommend that solo travelers choose accommodations that are in the Loop (downtown) area or close to an L train (Chicago’s metro) for easy access to public transport. This will give you the freedom to move around town without having to navigate the buses or use rideshares, which can get expensive, especially if you’re on your own.

If you are looking for ways to save money, check out all these incredible things to do in Chicago for free !

20. Detroit, Michigan

best places in usa for solo female travelers

Although it’s known as the Motor City, there’s so much more to Detroit than cars and engines. It has a reputation for being one of the most historically rich destinations in the country, let alone the Midwest. It’s famous for its contributions to music, industry, and architecture especially.

Start your solo trip to Detroit with a walking tour that highlights the city’s beauty and architectural gems. You also won’t want to miss a trip to Belle Isle, a massive, 982-acre island park home to a conservatory, aquarium, museum, and nature center. Who knew you could find a peaceful green paradise in such an industrial place?

That’s what makes Detroit so special for a solo trip, though. You could spend hours walking around town, getting a feel for its urban flair, and then head somewhere else to connect with nature and find solitude.

There is so much to do in Detroit that you might find yourself going back over and over again for a solo trip or otherwise.

21. New Orleans, Louisiana

solo female travel in new orleans - Taken at Royal and Dumaine street in the French Quarter

New Orleans is just the right place for solo female travelers : there’s something for everyone here (check out our vegan guide , for example). You’ll find a fascinating and rich cultural history, one that you can discover over a long weekend.

If it’s your first trip, stay in a boutique hotel on Royal Street, right near the allegedly haunted LaLaurie Mansion , or check out our list of boutique hotels in New Orleans . While you may have heard of the Garden District and the French Quarter, you absolutely cannot miss the Bywater district , where you’ll find hipster art and culture with a Southern twist. Of course NOLA is best known for Bourbon Street and Mardi Gras .

Though New Orleans is a large city, you can easily get around via public transportation (bus or streetcar), or navigate on foot. You’ll be surrounded by tourists and locals — as with any city, exercise caution.

Our New Orleans packing list will help you get the most out of your trip.

Book your stay in New Orleans here.

22. Austin, Texas

girlfriend getaway austin texas

In recent years, Austin has completely exploded in popularity. More and more young people are choosing to transplant themselves to this hip Southern city, and I can’t blame them. There’s so much to do there — from catching live music to the summer street festivals and top-notch museums, this city has it all.

Austin is the perfect solo destination for travelers who enjoy meeting other people on the road. It’s very social, with bustling restaurant, café, and bar scenes. Go shopping at North Loop vintage stores, see the city on a bike tour , or connect with your inner child at the Museum of Ice Cream . It’s no wonder Austin is such a popular destination for travelers, solo or otherwise.

23. Big Bend, Texas

best places in usa for solo female travelers

They say everything is bigger in Texas, and that’s certainly how it felt exploring Big Bend National Park . The sky, the landscape, and the wide-open spaces felt endless. Plus, Texans are friendly.

Check out the Windows Trail, watch the sunset on the Rio Grande, and hike to your heart’s content in one of the biggest national parks in the system.

24. Nashville, Tennessee

best places in usa for solo female travelers

Famously a destination for girls’ trips and bachelor bashes, Nashville has a bit of a reputation for being a party city. Maybe as a solo traveler, this is exciting to you. No worries if it’s not! There is much more to Nashville than its vibrant nightlife.

The city is bubbling over with historical sites, street festivals, live shows, and much more. It’s also one of the cheapest destinations in the USA and has plenty of free things to do . The Tennessee State Museum and Cooter’s Place Museum are among many free museums one can visit; there are also plenty of parks and the legendary Music City Walk of Fame.

When you travel solo, you don’t have anybody to split transportation and accommodation costs with, so finding reasonably priced destinations makes a big difference in how much you can stretch your dollar. Nashville is my top pick for such an affordable solo trip.

25. Louisville, Kentucky

solo travel us reddit

Louisville is one of the USA’s most underrated cities, and a great destination for solo female travelers. Often nicknamed “the Gateway to the South,” the city is most famous for its bourbon culture, but there’s much more to discover here.

You can also visit museums (the Kentucky Derby Museum is one of the most famous), explore caverns, go to the farmers’ market, admire the landmarks, and take numerous day trips (horse farms, for example).

All in all, Kentucky has a lot to offer to lovers of culture, history, and the outdoors, and you will easily make friends over some delicious bourbon.

26. Islamorada, Florida

islamorada indian key islamorada things to do, florida keys one-week itinerary

Also known as the Village of Islands, Islamorada is a beautiful destination for a solo traveler. The best time to visit is during the winter or early spring, when hurricanes are raging somewhere else. When you get here, it’s super easy and affordable to navigate the town with the free electric-vehicle taxi service called Freebee .

Islamorada has beautiful snorkeling (interested in snorkeling in Key Largo ?), awesome fishing opportunities, and uninhabited mangrove islands to explore. If you rent your own boat, you can go to some of the best off-shore reefs and fishing spots; if you rent a kayak, you can check out the historic ghost town of Indian Key.

Water-based activities aren’t for everyone though, so hop on the road and drive over to Windley Key to walk along giant walls of carved limestone. Islamorada also has a thriving local arts culture, supported especially by the Morada Way Arts & Cultural District. Plus there are beautiful beaches (check out the best beaches in Key Largo ) and vibey restaurants where you can find freshly caught seafood, live entertainment, and activities like feeding the tarpon.

Since it’s uniquely situated among the rest of the Florida Keys , you can also conveniently take a bus north toward Key Largo or south to Key West , stopping at tropical destinations along the way, like those in Marathon and Big Pine .

Book your stay in Islamorada here (the hotel also offers fishing charters!).

27. Miami, Florida

best places in usa for solo female travelers

Colorful and vibrant, Miami stands out as one of the most unique cities in the US. Between hearing salsa at all hours of the day in Little Havana and finding murals by world-renowned artists throughout town, your senses will be delighted.

If you thought it was all about crowded beaches and roaring nightclubs here, think again. It’s a great place for solo female travelers, because of the abundance of things to do in Miami . Plus, the city has an excellent reputation for being extremely hospitable, and even quite safe in general.

Whether you are looking for a beach vacation on which you can soothe your worries with a dip in the ocean or a full-on intercultural experience, you’ll find it in Miami.

28. Savannah, Georgia

best places in usa for solo female travelers

Savannah is dripping with Southern charm and definitely has plenty to do to keep any solo traveler occupied. Some travelers describe it as the closest thing to a fairytale, and judging by the elaborate architecture, towering oak trees with Spanish moss, and overall historical atmosphere, I think they’re right.

Fall in love with Savannah by hopping on an e-bike tour to see the highlights. As it’s such a globally recognized soul-food destination, get a taste by taking a food tour . Both of these activities are great if you want to have a bit of social interaction with other travelers, but if you want to hit the town solo, make sure to spend time strolling through the Historic District and River Street.

Ready to be enchanted? Check out this ultimate Savannah guide for more ideas of what to do and where to eat.

29. Washington, DC

best places in usa for solo female travelers

Our nation’s capital city is undoubtedly the mega-hub for incredible historical sites and museums, such as those at the National Mall . Personally, I prefer going to museums solo, so I can move through each exhibit at my own pace. I’m that girl who needs to read every placard and see every little thing, so going by myself gives me the freedom to do that without holding anybody else up.

If this is also you, Washington DC will be heavenly to visit alone. Get up before dawn to see the way the rising sun illuminates the Lincoln Memorial, because nobody can stop you. This city is truly magical at sunrise, before the hustle and bustle of the day begins.

You can also grab a seat on a historic hop-on-hop-off landmarks tour for another self-paced option. Or, if you prefer your history lesson a bit spookier, check out this haunted history ghost tour .

30. Cape Cod, Massachusetts

best places in usa for solo female travelers

Cape Cod, Massachusetts, is a family-friendly beach destination. Because it’s safe, easy to explore, and absolutely stunning, it’s especially suited to solo female travelers. Parts of it are also only an hour from Boston and Providence.

If you have a car, you can more efficiently explore the ocean beaches and epic sand dunes. On the bay side, you’ll get breathtaking sunsets, which are even more spectacular at low tide, when the colors reflect off the sand-flat puddles.

If you like to hike, try the 25-mile Cape Cod Rail Trail , which runs from Wellfleet to Dennis. You can rent a bike in outposts along the trail and deviate to marshes, lakes, and cranberry bogs. Wellfleet has drive-in movies and a weekend flea market if you’re looking for a more relaxing adventure. Gay-friendly Provincetown boasts restaurants serving the legendary clam chowder, lively nightlife, shop-til-you-drop opportunities, and whale-watching excursions .

Book your stay on Cape Cod here.

31. Hudson Valley, New York

solo travel us reddit

The Hudson Valley is nothing like New York City , yet the Big Apple is only an hour away. Here you’ll find farmers markets and mom-and-pop shops in place of grocery stores and chain restaurants, and gorgeous views accessible via many outdoor activities, such as rock climbing (some of the best is at “the Gunks”) and hiking. Or you can explore trails at Harriman or Bear Mountain State Park or experience the Walkway over the Hudson .

There are so many pocket towns, called “hamlets,” where you can walk through orchards, browse art galleries, and skip along the railway. The valley is also an excellent place for a road trip, especially during the fall, when the leaves are starting to change color.

best places in the usa for solo female travelers

Though the United States is huge, and no list could ever do justice to the wealth of places to see and experience, these are a few of our favorites. I hope this list helped you to get a sense of where to start — or continue — your solo journey.

If you have some favorite solo spots to share, please tell me in the comments below!

I’ve actually been kind of thinking I wanted a list like this for a while! There are tons of articles about the best places in the USA to visit, but this list pertaining specifically to solo travel is great! And I love how many of these places don’t need a car to get around; I would much rather use public transport or my feet if possible

Which is a rarity back home, but I agree!

Hey there! Glad you have added a post about the US, this is awesome. I love the Western US in my travels, hard to believe it is the same country! Here are my thoughts to add to this nice post plus some Eastern US call-outs solo or with friends, hope this is helpful as I have traveled a lot of the East:

1. Minneapolis and New Orleans: travel 3-4 hours north of Minneapolis to Lake Itasca, and an hour downstream of New Orleans and you will get to see the beginning and end of the mighty Mississippi River! There is St. Paul, MN, Minneapolis’ sister city, interesting history and it is the capital of Minnesota. You can walk in comfort for miles through downtown Minneapolis even in winter through the Minneapolis Skyway System, an engineering achievement.

2. Oregon coast: One of the most breathtaking views and experiences I have ever had was a rare sunny day along the Oregon coast. I got to see the coastline specifically near Florence, Oregon with rocks sitting on the beach several stories tall, temperate rain forests (not all rain forests are tropical) with trees hugging the cliff sides maybe 1000 feet steep if not more, sliding down to the beautiful blue ocean. Then there are the huge sand dunes (not like Namibia, but really neat). June is the best time to get it to clear up, that is the catch, having the weather cooperate (visibility).

For those who are on the Eastern side of the US, besides Cape Cod you’ve got:

3. The warm ocean beaches stretching from North Carolina (south of Cape Hatteras) to Florida: NC is quiet/quaint, South Carolina lots to do, so need to avoid busy season, Charleston, SC my favorite for history, Georgia coast for nature (loggerhead nesting) or for rustic privacy (11 private islands) or resort fancy vacations, Florida for tropical feel or exciting Miami, or more relaxed feel of the Gulf coast, or see the Everglades, swim with manatees and dolphins. 4. The FL Keys: Drive it or bike it, includes incredible bridges like the Seven Mile Bridge over the water 5. Niagara Falls, 6. New York City (you can go solo here, I have, the food is great, Manhattan is fun, 15% is park land, can do it too at a reasonable price if flexible), 7. Washington, D.C (use mass transit you are set, so much history and history being made, Smithsonian, it’s all free! Saw every museum then they built 3 more!), 8. West Virginia-Virginia Blue Ridge Parkway down to NC Smoky Mountains: For those into mountains instead of beaches, not as steep as the West, but so green, lush, and prehistoric (most diverse species of trees in North America)! 9. Maine coastline up to Canadian border: Gorgeous, rocky coastline, ending your trip at Pembroke, ME and see the “Reversing Falls” (yes the tides are so big there that the roaring cascades stop and reverse, need to get there 1 hour or so before high tide). If go into Canada, Bay of Fundy tide change biggest in the world. You can do a lot of this by bike! I have this in my travel plans soon!

I’d love to visit the Keys

02/27/2018 at 6:25 am

Yes, the Keys are great and offer some fantastic diving opportunities among other things. Morehead City, NC as well as Flower Garden Banks off Texas are great options as well in this regard! (but nothing like Rajat Ampat I am sure and I can only speak for the East Coast, I bet you could list off the top of your head spots to go out West! 🙂 ).

04/25/2019 at 3:58 am

Omg – you have to go to the Keys. I think Key West is closer to New Orleans than Miami. And, while you are at it jump down to the BVI.

As a born-and-raised Cape Codder, I enthusiastically second it as a great destination for solo travelers! I take a solo trip to Martha’s Vineyard or Nantucket (sometimes both!) every year. Thanks for including me in this post!

GReat list! I would add Portland Oregon, and Eugene and Bend Oregon!

Wow, what a list! I’d have to agree on San Francisco. I definitely left my heart there last April! Have you considered exploring more in the prairie regions? I might have some suggestions!

Feel free to add them here!

Charleston SC is also a gorgeous destination & one easy to traverse solo. Historic neighborhoods are breathtaking.

One can easily walk much of the city, along with a free trolley and many bicycle cabs

Thanks for the addition! I’d love to check out the South.

Hi Kristin,

I’m planning a trip to Alaska for northern light in September, I want to visit some places in the west coast of US after 1 week in Alaska.

My questions are: 1. Can you share typical places suit for solo traveler in the west coast as I plan to spend 1 week there? I’m not into shopping 2. Is it safe for girl to travel alone there 3. Are there public transportation eg: subway, bus

The itinerary is : Ho Chi Minh city –> Alaska –> West Coast –> Ho Chi Minh city

Thank a lot advance. Leu

04/01/2019 at 5:14 pm

Hi Leu, There will probably not be dorms in Alaska that you can use. I wish that hotel availability was better there. It might be more expensive but worth it! I would travel there solo, though Anchorage does have some crime. Sadly the public transport in Vietnam is much better than in the US so renting a car is best!

I wish I’d read this post when I roadtripped the West coast of the US! So much adventure to be had, let alone epic sights to see. Can’t believe I’d never heard of Moab before, that’s been swiftly added to the bucket list!

05/01/2019 at 6:23 pm

Moab is soooo awesome!

Las Vegas is on my bucket list. This list is awesome to explore USA. What time do you recommend to visit Big Sur?

01/12/2020 at 9:32 pm

Probably September. The weather is still nice and the kiddies are back in school so fewer tourists. However that’s close to our burning season which seems to be a yearly thing now so hard to say.

02/07/2021 at 6:36 pm

I’ve been looking where to vacation as a solo female for a year now. I want to pull the trigger this March. I’ve narrowed it down to Utah or South Dakota. History and mountains are my interest. Thanks for the website. It was very informative

I am planning a little solo road trip around the Southwest this spring and am really wondering about the free campsites you mentioned around the desert, especially Utah! I am sure I would stumble upon them somehow during my wandering, but for the sake of some broad planning and peace of mind, could you reccomend some free campsite areas? How did you find them, asking around or a cool website or both? Any tips are greatly appreciated ??

03/07/2022 at 10:09 am

Yes, look specifically for Bureau of land management areas on maps. When you are on BLM land, look for little side roads. Those almost always lead to an area where you can camp. You just have to be at least a mile from the road and not visible from major roadways. You also have to leave no trace so keep in mind that these areas do not have any services including bathrooms. Quite often, you will also need a 4WD vehicle. You can also look at freecampsites.net or the dyrt. Sometimes those are decent resources.

The Ultimate Solo Travel Guide: Travel Alone & Love It

Janice Waugh

January 4, 2024 by Janice Waugh

image, solo traveler, travel alone and love it

What is solo travel? After 15 years of traveling solo, I've concluded that it is two things. Solo travel can be done independently or on a group tour. Essentially, solo travel is when you leave behind everyone you know and embark on a trip. Independent solo travel is when you plan and navigate the travel yourself. Group solo travel is when you join a tour or cruise alone. Both provide the unique experience of exploring the world without family and friends who have expectations of you. It's about discovering who you are when no one (that you know) is looking.

Traveling alone delivers access to the world in ways that other forms of travel don't. It is an essential mode of travel, at least some of the time.

However, not everyone takes to it naturally. Some worry about traveling solo. There are concerns around loneliness, safety, and more.

While we have hundreds of articles on the site that get into the details of how to travel solo, here, in one place, is the ultimate guide for those who want to travel alone. The tips in this post will help you have the best experience possible. They will help you travel alone and love it.

If you are traveling independently, read on.

If you plan to go on an organized tour, don't miss our page of tours with no or low single supplement . It's updated at least once a month and if you'd like to receive it via email you can sign up here .

Why You Will Love Solo Travel

When you travel alone, you travel on your terms. You get to do what you want, when you want. You can connect with people if you wish or avoid them completely. Those are the obvious benefits for going solo as a traveler.

But there are many benefits of solo travel that affect your whole life. The experience encourages you to stretch and grow as a person. You gain confidence and get better at problem solving. You understand yourself better, become more independent, and become a more interesting person.

Ultimate Tips to Travel Alone and Love It!

Let's get into the experience of traveling alone.

For some people, enjoying a solo trip comes naturally. Others have to work at how to travel alone. Most who do, fall in love with it. Here are a few things you can do to ensure a great solo adventure.

1. Visualize the trip you want. It's all about you.

Start thinking about the opportunities that are present when you travel alone long before you leave. Is it down time you really want? Build that into the plan. Are you after a creative travel experience ? Research the opportunities before you go and then dream on them until you get there.

2. Gather firsthand knowledge before you go. Personal stories tell you more.

Talk to people who have already traveled to your destination. Doing this was so incredibly helpful when planning my trip to Patagonia. At the time, no amount of research helped me plan the logistics. Talking to people who had made a similar trip gave me insight into the travel options and tips on how to avoid the mistakes they had made. Use your social network to find people. Join online meetup groups based in your destination. Find expat groups at your destination. By talking to people you will learn more about things to do as well as things that are not really for you.

3. Learn to chat with strangers.

Starting conversations with strangers can be a challenge, especially when you're an introvert like I am. However, these conversations can be trip-changing, if not life-changing. There are many skills that can be developed for this and one is never too old to learn them. In fact, it was only when traveling alone after my husband passed away that I learned how much I had grown and taken on the techniques of an extrovert. I learned that I could talk to strangers easily.

4. Tap the experience of the people you meet. Get current information.

As a solo traveler, you'll meet more travelers and locals than those who travel with a partner. Ask a traveler about the best thing they've done so far or a local for the best hidden gem restaurant in the area. The people you meet and the advice they offer will greatly enrich your trip.

5. Be flexible with your plans. Opportunities arise!

When suggestions or opportunities arise from these chance encounters, be flexible enough to act on them. There are times when flexibility must reign and the schedule should be thrown away. I do this most often on road or rail trips.

6. Don't over-plan. You will absolutely need relaxing time.

Managing your travels yourself takes more energy than if you are with someone else. It is important to have extra time in your itinerary to wander a market leisurely, linger over a coffee at an outdoor café, or take that trip into the mountains you hadn't considered.

7. Be patient. Take time to settle in and learn how the city works.

It can be difficult arriving in a new city alone. Take your time. Take a day to relax, watch the city function, and settle in. Read Solo Travel Confidence: How to Be Strong, Capable, and Safe .

8. Explore your destination at different levels. Gain different perspectives.

In London, it's natural to take the Tube. However, riding on the top of a double-decker bus gives you another perspective on the city. But you still wouldn't want to miss the Tube as it's an experience unto itself. My point is, explore the city in as many ways as possible: on foot, by bicycle, via public transit. Take a taxi and talk to the driver. Rent a car and learn what it's like to park or drive on the opposite side of the road. Every mode of movement offers new perspectives.

9. Take in local events. Get to know the daily life of a culture.

Whether it's a street festival or a sporting event, these are opportunities to rub shoulders with locals, offering insight into the culture and, potentially, fun conversations. Events made for tourism will not be as successful for this as events created by and for locals.

10. Be proactive if you’re unsure of yourself.

Ask for help. Standing around looking dazed will not get you where you want to go and it may get you noticed by the wrong people. Go ahead, smile, and ask for help. It's one of the fundamentals of staying safe as you travel solo .

11. Eat locally! Discover the culture through food.

There is nothing like exploring the local cuisine. It gives you a new path into your destination's culture, history, and geography. There is always a reason, historical or geographic, for a specific cuisine that can be explored through your tastebuds and your mind.

12. Shop where the locals shop.

Are you into home renovations? Then a hardware store in another country could be quite interesting. Are you a foodie? Go to the grocery store or the street where all the specialty vendors are located. Are you into fashion or interior decorating? Again, explore (you don't have to buy) where the locals shop.

13. Know which way is up. An old-school map is your friend.

Study a map of your destination. Get to know it. Get a sense of direction using major landmarks like Central Park in New York City or the CN Tower in Toronto. This will help you explore cities happily, with greater confidence. Read How to Navigate a New City Solo .

13. Find people who share your passion.

Whether it's chess or poetry or badminton or books, there will be hubs or groups that share your passion at your destination. Many destinations have an English bookstore which is typically a great resource for events you will want to attend. Google search or find them on meetup.com. What a great way to combine your love of travel with your love of other things.

14. Take day tours and classes.

There are many benefits to punctuating your independent trip with local tours such as cooking classes . You have new ways to better experience your destination, enjoy some social time (after all, solo travelers are not necessarily loners), and you get to take a break and let the tour company run the logistics and planning of the experience.

15. Have great evenings out.

Just because you're traveling solo doesn't mean you have to stay in at night with a book. There are many options for things to do in the evening. If you're in a country where you don't speak the language, music is a good bet. Read What to Do at Night When Traveling Alone and How to Enjoy Going to a Bar Alone When You Travel .

What If You Don't Love Solo Travel?

Let's face it, not everyone likes the same thing. Some people will travel alone and, for one reason or another, not enjoy it.

The first thing I suggest is that you be patient. You're not going to find your solo travel groove on the first day of your first trip. You need to give yourself some time to settle into your destination and apply some of the many travel alone tips above.

If, then, you're still not loving it, read  What If You Travel and You Don’t Love It ? and the advice of other solo travelers in Feeling Overwhelmed? How to Conquer First-Day Solo Travel Anxiety .

The Best And Worst Cities For Traveling Alone, According To Solo Travelers Who Have Been All Over The Globe

"I think people overlook this country when planning a trip, but it should be high on any solo traveler's radar."

Hannah Loewentheil

BuzzFeed Staff

Maybe you love traveling alone , or perhaps you're thinking of embarking on your first solo adventure. Whatever the situation, there are certain destinations that are especially great for solo travel and others that are best for visiting with a companion or group. So I rounded up responses from the subreddit r/travel of the best and worst destinations for anyone thinking of traveling alone.

And of course, there's always risk involved with any type of travel, so it's important to do your own research and take precautions whether going solo or with a group.

1. Best: Japan

A man in a bamboo forest in Japan.

"Japan is a great place to travel alone. The country is clean, safe, has great food, lots to see, cool night life, and people will even approach you to you and ask if need help. I've never experienced that while traveling anywhere else!"

— u/margikarp

"Even if you don't speak the language, people will gladly help you. The food is amazing (and it's very common to eat alone). Plus, I never felt afraid or unsafe even after dark."

— u/UnimpressionableBot

2. Best: Ireland

Temple Bar in Dublin.

"I had a blast in Ireland by myself. I took a week-long bus trip, spent another week in a hostel in Dublin, and in both places I was surrounded by other tourists so I always had people to hang out with. Plus, if you're outgoing in just about any pub you'll become instant friends with a bunch of Irish people."

— u/ihopeyoulikeapples

3. Worst: Paris

A quiet street in Paris.

"I did not enjoy traveling alone in Paris. I found the people to be rude, and it was one of the most expensive cities I've ever visited."

— u/ tastesliketurtles

"Having lived in Paris, I wouldn’t naturally say it’s safe for a woman traveling alone. I’ve been followed many times, I've had random men approach me, and I have even had a few try to grab me or a friend. There are definitely certain areas I wouldn’t go to unless I was accompanied by someone else. Paris is also a pretty racist city for a capital city, so for Black Asian travelers especially, there is a lot of covert prejudice and discrimination."

— just a harmless potato

4. Best: Taiwan

A sprawling view of Taipei

"I spent a month in Taiwan and had an amazing time. I spent more of my time in Taipei, but I also visited Tainan, Kaohsiung, and Taichung. I went solo and met lots of great people in my hostel in Taipei. Taipei boasts tons of things to do, great food, interesting culture, and it's not nearly as touristy as most popular destinations like Hong Kong and Tokyo. The only downside is that because it's less touristy, it can be a bit tricky to get around if you don't speak Chinese. That being said, it's really worth a visit and I'd go back to Taipei in a heartbeat."

— u/skincareaddiction987

5. Best: The Netherlands

Woman Standing On Footbridge Over Canal In City

"Holland is a fantastic place to visit alone. I've found Dutch people to be very welcoming and helpful, plus I've always felt safe in the three major cities I visited (Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Den Haag). Everyone speaks English, the streets are clean, and weed is legal. Things are organized and calm, but locals know how to party and get down. It was a great experience traveling there solo."

— u/Traveler2121

6. Worst: Colombia

A fruit market in Colombia

"I would not recommend visiting Colombia alone. I visited Bogota and was robbed at knife point on my first night there. I definitely recommend traveling to this country, but it's better with a travel partner or a local guide.

7. Best: Portugal

Boats in a river and a colorful city in the backdrop.

"Both Porto and Lisbon are great cities for solo travel. In fact, the country is just so wonderful, not to mention super affordable. I feel like people often overlook Portugal when planning European travel, but it should be high on your radar."

8. Best: Guatemala

An outdoor market in front of a church

"Guatemala was great solo, especially Lake Atitlan. There are so many calm, laid-back, and beautiful places to stay and relax. But Guatemala can also be a lot of fun if you're looking for adventure or a party scene."

— u/ silentsunfox

9. Best: Argentina

Horses with mountains in the background.

"When I was traveling in Argentina, there were a ton of backpackers on long-term trips who were interested in hanging out. There were tons of cheap activities and amazing yet affordable food (think: Argentinian steak). I even stayed at a hostel with free wine, which made conversations flow and friendships easy to make."

— u/ Andromeda321

10. Worst: Rome

Rome during the fall.

"IMO, Rome is tough for solo travel. It's very hard to find non-touristy places (it's doable, but you have to search hard), and everything is crowded with tourists. Wherever you go, people are hassling you trying to get you to buy things or eat at their restaurant. I was there in the off-season, so I can't imagine how unpleasant it is during the summer."

11. Best: New Zealand

A traveler looking at a glacial lake

"My first solo trip was to New Zealand, and I fell in love with the place. I came back three years later on a Working Holiday Visa and never left. It's a great place to travel on your own. There are tons of people traveling alone and backpackers (similar to hostels, but nicer) nearly everywhere. These accommodations are a great way to meet people."

— u/ ratguy

12. Best: Portland, Oregon

A beautiful fall sunset in Downtown Portland

"Everyone is so friendly. You'll have 10 new best friends within a few hours of arriving in the city."

— u/ Yazbremski

13. Best: Thailand

A young woman sitting on a wooden boat in the water

"I was there recently and met so many fellow solo travelers. The great thing about traveling in Thailand is that you can do so many things from chilling on a beach in the south to heading to Northern Thailand for delicious food and culture. The whole country was pretty cheap, felt safe, and it was relatively easy to get around."

14. Worst: Marrakesh

An alleyway in Marrakesh.

"Marrakesh still holds the record as my worst solo travel experience. I experienced lots of hasslers, threats, and unwanted stares while exploring alone in the Medina. I think Marrakesh isn’t the best place for exploring alone, and it's better to hire a reputable local tour guide. I also found it hard to meet others while staying at a riad."

— u/ Varekai79

15. Best: Crete, Greece

A Greek church surrounded by mountains.

"I spent two months this summer backpacking around Europe, and Crete was by far my favorite place. The island is so huge that you can't run out of places to explore. And the bus system is fantastic."

— robj4e3e3ff32

16. Best: Mexico

A colorful street in Mexico.

"Mexico has hugely diverse ecosystems and cultures so it will cater to any kind of traveller. You'll find a mix of ecotourism and all-inclusive hotels to stay at. There's pre-colonial history including well-preserved ruins you can visit, thriving Indigenous communities and artesian industries, world-class nightlife, museums, beautiful beaches, and some of the best food in the world, IMO. Plus, Mexico is easy to navigate and has several great bus systems. The whole country is quite affordable for travelers coming from western countries. No matter where you visit (even somewhere touristy like Cancun), you can always find incredible off-the-beaten-path experiences."

— u/eastvankitty

17. Worst: Ibiza, Spain

A busy beach with lots of umbrellas set up

"I went to ibiza alone, and while the festivals and clubs were lively and fun, I still felt extremely out of place going out by myself. I also had my phone stolen. I wouldn’t go back to Ibiza myself and wouldn't recommend it as a solo trip to others, but I think with a group, Ibiza would be one of the most fun places on the planet."

— u/c11anderson

18. Best: New York City

A person walking by the Brooklyn Bridge.

"I've been lucky enough to circle the globe a couple of times, and I still find that NYC is one of the most social cities I've ever visited, perfect for solo travelers. I'm pretty shy, but every single night in New York I ended up meeting a group of strangers to socialize with. It made my experience very memorable."

— u/AutoSuggestUsername2

19. Best: Hanoi, Vietnam

The streets of Hanoi

"I would say Hanoi is one of the best cities for solo travel, and it's the best option in Southeast Asia. The city has charm, culture, hospitality, and affordable prices, whereas other urban hubs like Bangkok and Kuala Lumpur are very heavily modernized. In Hanoi, there are many vibrant hostels filled with backpackers near the French Quarter and its beautiful architecture. It's really easy to meet fellow travelers here to travel to the northern reaches of Vietnam (Sapa, Ha Giang) or head down to Saigon.

20. Worst: Egypt

A busy shopping street in Cairo

"I was constantly hassled and physically touched. Kids grab you and beg for money, which is horribly sad. The country was stunning, but the experience was unsettling."

— u/Dreaming-of-books

"I remember a man said I was worth five camels while other men asked me where my father was. A man screamed at me at the pyramids of Giza because I asked him to stop following me, and I was heckled so badly at the Cairo Market. I absolutely loved the food, learning about the incredible history, and seeing how different the whole Egyptian way of life is, but as an American woman I never felt safe."

— u/lsigfrid

21. Worst: India

A busy street with traffic in India

"IMO, India is not a good place to travel alone. I felt that I was constantly being scammed, and at least in Delhi, it didn't feel entirely safe. Plus, it is so crowded and so loud that you'll experience a lot of confusion for the first few days. India has a ton to offer and so many beautiful sites that it's well worth a visit, but I would suggest going with others."

— u/i_don_wan

22. Best: Malta

An alleyway with colorful plants and shutters.

"Malta is insanely beautiful and serene. It's small and easy to get around by bus, and the locals are incredibly nice and helpful. I spent a total of 36 hours there during my two-week solo European vacation, and I can say without a doubt that it is the best place for soul searching. Most importantly, I felt extremely safe."

— sparklesmuggler

23. Worst: South Africa

Colorful houses in front of a mountain

"I loved South Africa, but it's better to visit this country with company. The personal safety concerns are real and something I was constantly aware of during my time there. I felt the most comfortable when I was with a local friend."

— u/ sfhkkkgftyg

24. Best: Iceland

A woman in a natural hot spring

"Iceland is a great country to choose for your first solo trip. There's lots to see, there's basically no crime, and it's easy to navigate. It is fairly expensive though, so be prepared. There's so much to see and do like the Golden Circle (Thingvellir National Park and Gulfoss), Southern Iceland loop (Vik, Jokulsarlon, Skaftafell), and, of course, the city of Reykjavik. Iceland was one of the travel highlights of my lifetime."

— u/ thuyghe

25. Best: Republic of Georgia

A church on a hill overlooking colorful buildings

"Georgia is home to super-welcoming people and amazing food and wine. I found other travelers tended to be incredibly friendly. You won’t be alone for long once you arrive, nor will you feel unsafe."

—Porgirella

26. Best: South Korea

People shopping in a large fish market

"As a solo traveler, South Korea was an extremely fulfilling experience. I never felt out of place, no one gave me any funny looks, and as a woman, I was never harassed or felt uncomfortable. Both Seoul and Busan have everything there is to offer in terms of sightseeing. And even in the metropolis of Seoul, you can easily get away from the city to do some hiking. In nature I think it would be an ideal place for other people who are embarking on their first solo travel adventure. In addition, Korea is more affordable than other popular Asian countries like Japan. You can eat well and use the public transportation on a budget."

Whether you’re into raves, relaxation, hiking or sightseeing, these spots are certain to get your solo travel adventure off on the right foot.

South America: best for solo adventures

With mountains to climb, rivers to raft, ancient ruins to uncover and jungles to explore, South America is the ultimate adventure destination. And the northern hemisphere's winter is South America's summer – the prime time to visit Patagonia and the Andes. From well-trodden paths in Argentina , Chile and Brazil to virgin jungle trails in Ecuador and Colombia , the continent has something for every kind of adventurer. You'll certainly never struggle for company on the trek to Machu Picchu !

Don’t let the continent's size daunt you – with easy border crossings and well-established traveler hubs, South America is ideal for solo overlanding. The well-worn Gringo Trail, which takes in the continent’s most popular destinations, ensures recurring rendezvous with fellow adventurers and ample opportunities to buddy up with travelers heading in the same direction. This, paired with the general warmth of local people and the continent’s premium hostel network, makes solo travel simple.

Epic solo travel experience : Mountain biking down Bolivia ’s infamous Death Road (the name is an exaggeration, in case you were worried) and debriefing with your fellow riders over a few beers afterward.

Pura Taman Saraswati temple in Ubud, Bali

Ubud, Indonesia: best for self-reflection

Whether you loved or loathed Elizabeth Gilbert’s seminal solo travel memoir Eat, Pray, Love , there’s no denying that Bali has a special magic. The island's artistic and spiritual center, Ubud , is where the author found love (and presumably ate and prayed) and it remains a wonderfully laid-back place for solo travelers to relax, reflect and recharge. And Bali is a year-round destination – summer is peak season, but the island has a quieter and calmer charm in winter.

Nestled among emerald rice fields ringed by mist-wrapped mountains, Ubud attracts throngs of solo travelers, meaning no probing glances if you arrive alone at a morning yoga class or ask for a table for one in one of the town’s salubrious vegetarian cafes. To really harness the healing power of Ubud (and for some serious solitude), check yourself into one of the many health retreats that dot the verdant hills around town.

Epic solo travel experience : Getting up super early before the heat climbs to join a holistic class – you find lessons in everything from yoga and meditation, and you can follow up with a massage at a tried and tested spa such as Taksu Spa .

Young people dancing at a Berlin club

Berlin, Germany: best for nightlife

Some say you are more likely to get into Berghain , the most famous nightclub in Berlin , if you arrive alone. Whether or not that’s the case, the rumor demonstrates the German capital’s natural affinity for solo travelers. Legions of solo citybreakers are drawn by Berlin's deserved reputation as one of the friendliest, most inclusive cities in Europe, and by its famous nightlife.

Berlin is one of the best places in Europe to party, offering a collection of colossal clubs and graffiti-spattered beer gardens, but going clubbing is just one of many things to do in Berlin. Thought-provoking history surrounds you from the moment you arrive, from the Brandenburg Gate to the Holocaust Memorial , while quirky cafes, cool boutiques, weekend flea markets and a growing food-truck scene provide more leisurely delights. Berlin is an easy place to wander alone, or join a walking tour for some company.

Epic solo travel experience : Heading out to a bar or nightclub and seeing where the night takes you. For some guided imbibing, join a beer tour with Brewer's Berlin Tours or Berlin Craft Beer Experience .

An elephant passes a safari jeep in Kenya

East Africa: best for a group tour

Have you always dreamed of viewing gorillas in the jungles of Rwanda , meeting a Maasai chief in Kenya  or spotting the “Big Five” in Tanzania , but were daunted by the logistics of tackling East Africa independently? A group tour can simplify the experience of visiting this stunning region of the world, and provide a buffer for the sometimes challenging experiences Africa can throw at first-timers.

East Africa’s tourism infrastructure is well developed and traveling solo in most countries here is quite achievable (particularly in Kenya and Tanzania), but joining a group tour means you can bundle together a string of big game-viewing safaris in multiple countries, without getting hit by additional lone traveler charges or facing the daunting prospect of arranging multiple tours and transport.

Best of all, tours in these bucket-list destinations attract a diverse group of travelers, meaning you’re much less likely to be the only solo traveler sandwiched between canoodling couples, or the only 20-something in a coach full of empty-nesters.

Epic solo travel experience : Catching the great migration from the Serengeti in Tanzania to the Masai Mara in Kenya – an almost Lion King -esque parade of wildebeest, zebras, gazelles and predators.

View from the walkway on The Supertree Grove at Gardens by the Bay, Singapore

Singapore: best for a solo stopover

With all manner of cultural attractions to explore, a growing collection of hostels and guesthouses, loads of free things to do , and one of the world’s best public transport systems (including excellent airport links), there are few more stress-free solo travel experiences than landing at Singapore 's award-winning Changi airport on a tropical afternoon.

Whether you choose to amble with an audio guide through the Chinatown Heritage Centre , gawp at the otherworldly Gardens by the Bay , plunge into a lavish rooftop pool, or join the hordes feasting in Singapore's hawker food courts , the city is perfectly suited to solo travel. An added bonus is the city's cosmopolitan attitude – locals don't bat an eyelid at the daily influx of international arrivals, and there are few hassles and scams to worry about.

Epic solo travel experience : Checking out the cozy cafes and quirky boutiques in the gentrified 1930s housing estate of Tiong Bahru .

Interior of Rome's Colosseum with a crowd of tourists

Rome, Italy: best for culture

From ancient icons such as the Colosseum and the Roman Forum to the towering masterpiece of Renaissance architecture that is St Peter’s Basilica , Rome ’s cityscape is a kaleidoscopic canvas of artistic flair, architectural wonderment and historical marvels. Whether you’re visiting for two days or two months, there's so much to see that there's little risk of becoming bored.

Though English is not as widely spoken as in some European nations, it’s hard to feel lonely among the 14 million other tourists who visit this cultural hub each year. And solo dining means you only have to worry about keeping one palate happy in Rome's fabulous restaurants . But don’t pack too much into your itinerary, as Rome rewards relaxation; mingling with strangers over a glass of vino at sunset is an essential pastime in The Eternal City.

Epic solo travel experience : Visiting St Peter’s Basilica and walking the 7km (4.3 miles) of artwork-filled halls that comprise the Vatican Museums .

A young woman orders food from a food truck in Portland, Oregon.

Portland, Oregon: best city break

One of the USA 's hippest hubs, Portland has all the cultural advantages of a major metropolis, but the down-home intimacy of a small town. This affable attitude reverberates in the town’s urban wineries, microbreweries and coffee shops, where conversation flows quicker than the drinks can be poured. And with its patchwork of small, friendly neighborhoods , it's easy to discover this easy-going city one district at a time.

There’s more to this bastion of counterculture than its love of a good chinwag, with a host of whimsical attractions highlighting its quirky streak, from a museum dedicated to vacuum cleaners to an urban herd of goats. It’s also a cinch to navigate, with good public transport and a popular bike-share scheme. And while Portland is famous for its artisan restaurants, a more sociable – and undeniably more fun – way to dine is at the city’s 500-or-so street food carts.

Epic solo travel experience : Exploring the Alberta Arts District; for the company of fellow art enthusiasts, time your visit to coincide with the Last Thursday art walk .

A group of tourists prepare ingredients during a Thai cooking lesson in Chiang Mai

Chiang Mai, Thailand: best for food

It's a close-run thing, but for solo foodie travel, one destination stands above all others for travelers who view the world through the prism of a knife and fork. The capital of northern Thailand – and once the center of an independent kingdom – Chiang Mai offers the entire Thai package in one compact location: stellar food, rich culture, ancient ruins, responsible elephant encounters , relaxed nightlife and an easy-going traveler scene that's easy to plug into.

Every time of day is snack time in Chiang Mai. From the city's impressive northern Thai restaurants to its fun-filled and frenetic night markets and hole-in-the-wall restaurants serving the city's famous kow soi soup, the city always has a fork or spoon in hand. What makes Chiang Mai especially suited to solo travelers is its collection of cooking schools – ideal places to meet new people and learn how to cook up a perfect bowl of phat thai , green curry or hot and sour tom yam soup.

Epic solo travel experience : Learning to cook Thai food, of course! Most courses start with a market trip so you can learn to identify local ingredients before you start pounding herbs and spices to make your own curry paste ( Small House Chiang Mai is one recommended school).

Palm trees and colorful houses line a beach in Caye Caulker, Belize

Caye Caulker, Belize: best for an island escape

Enchanting atolls aren’t reserved for honeymooners. Pastel-hued, car-free Caye Caulker has always been a great place for solo travelers thanks to its compact size and easy-going, backpacker-friendly vibe, which draws a relaxed, international crowd in search of a less commercialized slice of paradise.

It’s easy to lose days lounging at The Split , the island’s premier beach, but there are plenty of other activities on offer, from snorkeling and diving on teeming reefs to kayaking to lesser-visited parts of the island while keeping a beady eye out for crocodiles.

Join other travelers at local reggae bars during the afternoon happy hour before sampling Creole-style street food come nightfall. What's arguably the greatest blessing of solo travel? You don’t have to share your shrimp and swordfish dinner!

Epic solo travel experience : Snorkeling or diving in the Caye Caulker Marine Reserve , which teems with turtles and small sharks.

Car driving along a sandy beach on Fraser Island, Queensland, Australia

East Coast Australia: best for road-tripping

It would actually be hard to explore the East Coast of Australia alone. So many travelers follow the snaking stretch of road that runs from Sydney to Cairns that solitude is often harder to find than companionship. For travelers in search of natural wonders, excellent infrastructure, abundant tours and group activities and raucous late-night revelry, there are few places to match it.

But it’s not just the good-time vibe that makes this stretch of coastline so spectacular. The classic road trip route is studded with bucket-list attractions, from lolling on Sydney’s iconic Bondi Beach to rambling through the ancient Daintree Rainforest or blowing bubbles on the Great Barrier Reef . Consider renting a car to explore – the most memorable moments will likely come from interactions with locals in coastal surf towns and one-pub villages in the Outback an hour or two inland from the coast.

Epic solo travel experience : Joining a tour with the East Coast's Indigenous people. Tours led by guides from Aboriginal communities will show you a less-seen side to this well-explored land.

Do you prefer solo travel?

For some solo travelers, heading to a hidden mountain retreat or exploring an unknown city alone is like heaven. Moreover, for those who feel comfortable dining alone, this can be a great experience. As the trend becomes increasingly popular, solo travelers are seeking self-discovery and freedom away from their daily routines.

The following locations are in Europe , but watch this space for more introvert-recommended spots in Asia.

Alone in Scotland

“The Highlands are empty and beautiful, a perfect place for a contemplative holiday,” another Reddit says. Others mentioned hiking away from populated areas, especially in the Highlands, is really rewarding.

Meanwhile, some may avoid Scotland due to its rainy reputation, but one Reddit user said: “Great weather for reading and sleeping but also invigorating if you’re out in it.”

Travel solo in Switzerland

Another Redditor added that in Switzerland, no one will chat you up and there is little partying or noise here. They added that it is the “Most beautiful country on earth,” adding:

You can just take train rides through Switzerland and do nothing but look at the jaw-dropping scenery in silence and be completely entertained.

Discover introverted Finland

Meanwhile, another Redditor noted that people in Finland like their personal space and “probably won’t talk to you unless they are drunk.” Moreover, when it comes to cities, Finland’s capital, Helsinki is “safe, walkable and quiet.”

Travel solo in Iceland

Introvert visiting Iceland

Meanwhile, another recommended renting an RV and traveling around that gorgeous countryside, with its mountains, waterfalls, glaciers and more. One Redditor recommends flying Icelandair to “take advantage of its Stopover program.”

To get an idea, the airline allows travelers to add a one-to-seven-day stopover in Iceland on any of its transatlantic routes at no extra charge. This is a true bargain for solo travelers who are often hit with additional costs. Meanwhile, another user recommended basing your travels in Reykjavik and taking some of the many day trips to explore.

Have fun traveling solo this year and keep up with the r/solotravel subreddit for many more recommended locations for exploring the world alone.

25 Best International Destinations for Solo Travel

When you’re looking to travel alone, these are the safest, most exciting, and all-around best destinations for flying solo.

solo travel us reddit

Sometimes you are your own best company. Whether you want to plan a romp around Japan on your own terms, or your friends can’t fit that Scottish sojourn into their schedule at the moment, there are a variety of reasons to travel alone.

The benefits of traveling solo range from the freedom to fully indulge your every whim to a sense of empowerment to opportunities for reflection, self-discovery, and new friendships.

Whatever your reasons, traveling solo can be one of life's most rewarding experiences. And, whether you're about to embark on your first solo trip or your 20th, tackling a trip by yourself can be incredibly nerve-wracking.

We wouldn't want a lack of company to keep you from booking that ticket, so we've come up with a list of countries ideal for both first-time and experienced solo travelers, including safe destinations where you can expect a warm welcome. We take you through longtime favorites like Mexico, as well as destinations that are becoming increasingly popular with solo travelers like Egypt and Croatia.

From castle crawls in Germany to seeing the Northern Lights in Norway, here are the best countries for solo travel abroad.

There's a reason why Iceland has consistently ranked among the hottest destinations in recent years: The country is a haven for travelers who love the outdoors, with caverns and caves to explore, volcanoes and glaciers to hike, and geothermal spas to soak in — and since it's the most peaceful country in the world, according to a recent Global Peace Index report, solo travelers can explore the country worry-free.

If you're traveling to Reykjavík, consider taking a day trip to the ever-popular Blue Lagoon , or go whale watching in Faxaflói Bay. For those wanting to get out of the city, Thingvellir National Park  offers camping, hiking trails, horseback riding, and the freshwater Silfra fissure, considered one of the best diving spots in the world.

2. Costa Rica

Taylor McIntyre/Travel + Leisure

Costa Rica has long had a reputation as one of the happiest countries in the world, and it's easy to see why. In Costa Rica you'll find plenty of outdoor activities to please your adventurous side, from whitewater rafting down the Reventazón River and zip lining through gorgeous rainforests to rappelling down waterfalls and hiking in Arenal Volcano National Park .

If you need a bit of respite amidst all the activity, Arenal has hot springs perfect for relaxing, or you can enjoy the white sands and wildlife at Playa Manuel Antonio, a tropical beach in Manuel Antonio National Park .

3. New Zealand

New Zealand is a popular destination for backpackers, outdoor enthusiasts , and thrill-seekers striking out on their own — maybe because it's the second most peaceful country in the world, according to the Global Peace Index .

The country is a haven for outdoorsy types and one of the best places to meet fellow travelers. You can take a cruise through the fjords, rainforests, and waterfalls of Milford Sound; heli-hike your way through Franz Josef Glacier ; trek part (or all) of the Tongariro Alpine Crossing ; explore the Waitomo Glowworm Caves ; or go whale-watching in the Bay of Plenty .

If you need some down time from all your adventuring, take a day trip to Waiheke Island for wine tours or make your way to the Hobbiton Movie Set to wander the real-life version of the Shire. With so much to do, you won't miss having a travel buddy.

Christopher Larson/Travel + Leisure

With a thriving backpacker culture and accommodating resorts, Mexico is an optimal place for any type of solo trip. Locals are friendly and the country is dotted with cultural sites and a beautiful natural landscape — never mind all the tacos, empanadas, and tortas!

There are Mayan ruins near Cancun, whale watching in Los Cabos, Instagram opportunities in Tulum, tamales and mezcal in Oaxaca, and a thriving art scene in Mexico City.

5. Switzerland

Switzerland is known for its stunning beauty and there may be no better way to see the country than by train. Purchase a Swiss Travel Pass , which gives you unlimited travel by train, bus, and boat, and journey past stunning waterfalls, forests, and lakes. Then, hop off the train to hike the Alps, visit medieval castles, and drink Swiss wine.

In the country that invented milk chocolate, indulging in the decadent, creamy treat is a no-brainer. But instead of simply picking up a bar of Toblerone or Lindt Chocolate at the nearest grocery store, take a chocolate-themed walking tour in Lucerne or Zürich, or visit one of the area's several world-famous chocolate factories.

Rory Fuller/Travel + Leisure

Chile's landscape is as beautiful as it is diverse. Whether you explore Torres del Paine National Park or the San Rafael Glacier in Patagonia, climb an active volcano in the Lake District, or camp underneath the brilliant night sky in the Atacama Desert , you're sure to find an adventure that suits your fancy.

In Santiago, adventure meets culture, and the city is easy to navigate by foot or bicycle. You can hike San Cristóbal Hill or Santa Lucía Hill for panoramic views of the capital, browse the boutique shops, cafes, and cocktail bars in the Bellavista neighborhood, or explore the city's many museums and art galleries.

7. Netherlands

Michela Sieman/Travel + Leisure

For any first-time solo travelers, the Netherlands is a great place to get your newly-independent feet wet. In Amsterdam, with its laid-back and friendly culture, do as the locals do: Get around by bike. Start in Vondelpark , a popular urban park, then bike to world-famous museums like the Van Gogh Museum , passing the city's picturesque canals and bridges along the way.

Head to the Netherlands between mid-April and the first week of May, and you'll be welcomed by a glorious array of the country's most beloved flower: the tulip. The Keukenhof , also known as the Garden of Europe, is located just outside Amsterdam and boasts over seven million bulbs and hundreds of varieties of tulips. Or, go to Noordoostpolder to see even more colorful blooms during the annual Tulip Festival .

Spain has a little bit of everything to please everyone: art museums, gorgeous architecture, delicious food, stunning beaches, exciting nightlife, and jaw-dropping hikes.

In Barcelona, wander Park Güell , a public park that doubles as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It features modern architecture, sculptures, and mosaics designed by Catalan architect Antoni Gaudí. Continue your Gaudí tour at Sagrada Família before moving onto the Picasso Museum . When you start to get hungry, make your way to Mercado de La Boqueria , the oldest market in the city.

You can also find some of the world's best beaches in Spain, such as Ocata Beach near Barcelona and Socorro Beach in Tenerife. The brave and truly adventurous can join an organized hike through Caminito del Rey in Málaga or begin their journey along the famed Camino de Santiago.

Austria is a must-see for solo travelers with a taste for fine culture. See for yourself why Vienna is known as the City of Music and attend a concert at the State Opera House or the Musikverein . The city also boasts hundreds of museums, prime for exploring in between experiencing traditional Viennese coffeehouse culture.

In Salzburg, backdrop to "The Sound of Music," fans of the musical can take themed tours of the city and round out their trip by visiting Mozart's Birthplace and climbing to the top of Hohensalzburg Fortress for unforgettable views of the city.

10. Denmark

Denmark is another easy-to-tackle country for solo travelers. Start in Copenhagen and head to the Nyhavn district to see the city's iconic wooden ships and colorful townhouses lining the canal. Afterward, take a stroll through Tivoli Gardens . While beloved for its amusement park, the popular attraction also features flower gardens, bubble fountains, and an aquarium.

Shakespeare aficionados should head to Kronborg Castle : The UNESCO World Heritage site inspired Elsinore Castle in "Hamlet." While there, take the train to nearby Hillerød, where you'll find Frederiksborg Castle, home to the Danish Museum of National History .

First stop: Tokyo. Whether you shop in the luxurious Ginza neighborhood, ride to the top of one of the world's tallest towers , tour the Sensō-ji temple , dine on ramen at Ichiran Shibuya (the famous chain serves steaming bowls of ramen at no-frills booths), or take a leisurely stroll through a traditional Japanese garden, you'll never run out of things to do in the glitzy city.

If you need some rest from the hustle and bustle, you can take a bullet train to Kyoto, where you'll find a plethora of shrines, gardens, and temples. Since the tea ceremony has its roots in Kyoto , you may wish to partake in the tradition while you're there. Be sure to visit during the springtime to see the gorgeous cherry blossoms in bloom.

Lara D'agostino/Travel + Leisure

Visit Norway during the summer for warmer weather and lots of outdoor attractions and activities. In Oslo, you can explore the capital's many museums, restaurants, and parks by walking, cycling, or taking public transportation. Or, book a spot on a Hurtigruten coastal steamer — there's no single supplement on select voyages — and cruise through the country's famous fjords on a multi-day adventure, stopping at numerous ports of call along the stunning coastline to hike, kayak, safari, and more. You'll even cross the Arctic Circle!

On the other hand, if seeing the Northern Lights tops your list, a trip to Norway between November and March will land you there during peak aurora borealis season. For optimum viewing of the natural phenomenon, head to the heart of the aurora zone: the city of Tromsø.

13. Ireland

If the idea of traveling by yourself to a country where you don't speak the language makes you nervous, then opt to visit Ireland. In Dublin, you can take a literary walking tour of the UNESCO City of Literature , browse Grafton Street's bustling shops, and cozy up in the Guinness Storehouse with a pint of the world-famous stout.

With its stunning scenery and friendly inhabitants, Galway is not to be missed, either. While you're there, stroll along the lovely Salthill Promenade, or park yourself in a traditional pub in Eyre Square to listen to live Irish folk music. If you're looking to get out of the city, hop on a ferry to the nearby Aran Islands to explore medieval ruins and forts, or take a public bus to the iconic Cliffs of Moher for breathtaking views.

14. Uruguay

This South American country is perfect for those who just want to relax by the ocean and soak up the sun. Punta del Este may be best known for its gorgeous beaches, like Playa Mansa and Playa Brava. But, if you want to escape the crowds, consider visiting the more secluded beaches in Jose Ignacio and Rocha.

Montevideo isn't short on beaches, either, and for those who want to mix up sunbathing with cultural experiences, the capital also offers historical attractions, museums, and traditional Candombe music and dance performances.

15. Albania

Its friendly locals and gorgeous scenery makes Albania an up-and-coming destination for solo travelers. Journey to the Blue Eye spring near Saranda and you'll encounter some of the bluest, clearest water in the world. Since you might find the water too cold to swim in, head to the Albanian coast for fun and sun on any of the country's beautiful beaches, or soak in Përmet's Benja Thermal Baths — they're said to have healing properties.

You may also want to consider taking a day trip to Berat — nicknamed the "town of a thousand windows" — to marvel at the city's stunning architecture. From the Ottoman-era buildings and medieval castles to the mosques and Holy Trinity Church, you'll quickly see why the city has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage site .

16. Vietnam

Irjaliina Paavonpera/Travel + Leisure

Endless adventure awaits in Vietnam. Hop on a boat that departs from Hạ Long and cruise through Bai Tu Long Bay, home to some of the world's most striking blue water and natural landscapes. Take a guided tour of Hang Sơn Đoòng , the largest natural cave in the world. Visit Hội An during the full moon and you'll be welcomed by the awe-inspiring sight of hundreds of lanterns floating down the Thu Bồn River during the city's monthly full moon festival.

In Ho Chi Minh City, you can indulge in street food at Bến Thành Market, one of the city's earliest surviving structures, and brush up on Vietnam War history during a tour of the War Remnants Museum and the Củ Chi Tunnels. Travel to Hanoi to explore the capital's impressive historical and cultural sites, and take a leisurely stroll around Hoàn Kiếm Lake.

17. Germany

Germany has several major cities that are accessible to anyone traveling on their own. Hop on a bike in Berlin to explore the city's abundance of museums, historical sites, cafés, nightclubs, and parks. You can also visit Munich during Oktoberfest , but if you'd rather avoid the crowds, you can enjoy the city's beer gardens any time of year. And if you head to Frankfurt, you'll discover an eclectic array of museums, cafés, boutiques, restaurants, and a lush botanical garden in the increasingly popular city.

You should also consider planning side trips to see some of Germany's famous castles — there are over 20,000 of them. From the Gothic-style Liechtenstein Castle to the dramatic Neuschwanstein Castle, visiting any of Germany's magical old sites will have you feeling like you stepped straight into a fairy tale.

18. Finland

Thanks to the camaraderie of the traditional sauna experience , it's easy to meet people in Finland as a solo traveler — the country is home to over three million saunas, from Helsinki to Tampere and Savonlinna.

But there's more to Finland than saunas. In Helsinki, you'll find magnificent architecture, museums, parks, markets, and more — all easily accessible by foot or public transportation. Travel to the coasts to see a lovely array of lighthouses, or head to Rauma or Loviisa to spend a day in a wooden town. While it may be best to go to "The Land of the Midnight Sun" in the summer, visit during the winter for peak viewing of the Northern Lights.

19. Scotland

Jess Macdonald/Travel + Leisure

With extensive folklore, outdoor adventure, and stunning beauty around every corner, Scotland is the perfect place to reconnect with yourself. It’s a safe, cozy sojourn for anyone who loves postcard-perfect views. Explore Edinburgh by bike, stopping at the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art and Holyrood Park .

You’d be remiss not to try the country’s world-class golf while you’re there — you’ll have more than 550 courses to choose from.

Feeling brave? Head to the Scottish Highlands to seek out the legendary underwater monster at Loch Ness, and while you're there, visit Urquhart Castle , which dates all the way back to the thirteenth century.

20. Australia

This popular solo travel destination is considered to be an exceptionally safe place with a wide range of areas to explore. Start in Sydney, with its friendly vibe and thriving art, food, and sport scenes, where you can walk around Sydney Harbour or explore the white-sand shore at Bondi Beach. Hit the epic swells of Victoria and then ride the tram around Melbourne for a coffee shop crawl. You can also hit hiking trails in Tasmania to experience Australia's natural splendor by foot. Speaking of, the Great Barrier Reef awaits snorkelers off the coast of Far North Queensland.

You’ll probably want to fly between destinations — this is a huge country, after all — but you can also rent a car and indulge in an Australian road trip. Or, go old-school and traverse the country by train on The Ghan , where you can experience the outback on a journey from Adelaide to Darwin.

From the slopes of British Columbia to the cosmopolitan wonders of Toronto , Canada has tons to keep you entertained, even when you’re alone. Our neighbor to the north is a quick flight (or a reasonable drive depending on where you’re coming from and going to) and accessible in terms of language, exchange rate, and transportation.

If you opt for Canada's largest city, explore the arts and culture of Toronto’s Harbourfront Centre , eat your way through St. Lawrence Market , or get to know the city's eclectic range of neighborhoods. Over in Vancouver, you can bike your way through the waterfront city, or cross the vertigo-inducing Capilano Suspension Bridge , a 450-foot-long, 230-foot-high bridge cutting through lush woodland. Go straight to Alberta to explore Banff National Park ’s famous glacial lakes and Rocky Mountain vistas.

22. Thailand

Thailand has long been an affordable destination and, because of its safe, accessible atmosphere, it’s becoming just as popular with solo travelers. Explore the delicious food, thrilling nightlife, and tranquil spas of Bangkok. The tropical paradise also has beautiful beaches — we recommend those of Phuket, Krabi, and the Phi Phi Islands — for lounging the day away by the Andaman Sea.

Public transportation is easy and readily available, from trains, subways, buses, and taxis to long-tail boats and tuk-tuks. Head here in mid-April for the Songkran Water Splashing Festival to celebrate the Buddhist New Year with parades, street parties, and performances.

23. Croatia

If you’re feeling spontaneous, book a solo trip to Croatia, where you’ll be able to stretch your budget across spectacular beaches , rich history, and delectable cuisine. With a desirable exchange rate and friendly locals, this is perfect for any party of one. Become a beach bum on the unspoiled shores of the Dalmatian Islands. You’ll have the blue waters, white sands, and dramatic limestone cliffs to admire as you lounge by yourself. Then, eat your weight in white truffle pasta and fresh seafood before walking it off around Dubrovnik’s medieval Old Town.

Egypt is becoming more desirable for solo travel. A cruise down the Nile might be the best (not to mention safest and most convenient) way to see the African country alone. Eat delicious falafel in Cairo, explore the Great Pyramids in Giza, and discover ancient temples and tombs. And then return to your five-star accommodations before sailing off to the next archaeological wonder.

There are also new (or updated) sights to see in the ancient destination. In 2022, the Avenue of the Sphinxes in Luxor reopened after years of renovations. And, be on the lookout for the Grand Egyptian Museum in Giza, which should open sometime in 2023.

25. England

Take solitary strolls along stunning cliffs, around quaint, small towns, or down urban streets in England. London is a natural choice for any Americans traveling across the pond. Traipse around Trafalgar Square , see the Rembrandts and Cézannes at the National Gallery , or enjoy a proper afternoon tea service at The Lanesborough .

But, of course, there are also the charming English towns that will make you feel like you’ve stepped back in time. One of the best parts of traveling to England is the history and you’ll find plenty of that in its storybook castles and the industrial-age towns of Yorkshire.
