Top Family Friendly Places in Bangkok to Bring Your Kids Including a Mini Safari & an Observation Deck Made of Glass

November 16, 2022 by Bino Leave a Comment

It goes without saying that Bangkok is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Asia. The Thai capital simply offers a plethora of things to see and do for any budget and for any type of traveler. This includes families – folks who are traveling with teenagers or kids. There is so much more to Bangkok than just shopping and food. From a safari that seems to jump straight out of Africa to thrilling amusement parks; this list has you covered with a variety of suggestions for your next Bangkok trip with the fam-bam.

King Power Mahanakhon

fam trip to bangkok

The King Power Mahanakhon – located in Sathorn – is one of Thailand’s tallest buildings. Measuring 314 meters in height, its rooftop is open to the public and houses a 360 degree observation deck as well as a glass tray that visitors can stand on. The latter’s transparent flooring gives visitors a thrill as it provides the feeling of being suspended in mid-air. Families can delight on the magnificent view of Bangkok. The kids can also enjoy the immersive Mahanakhon Skyrides, a virtual reality experience that simulates paragliding over the city or the mountains.

Ancient City Bangkok

Think of Ancient City as a gigantic outdoor museum. Instead of paintings or sculptures, visitors get to see replicas of some of Thailand’s most popular monuments and attractions. The sprawling 200 acre park houses copies of ancient ruins like those in Sukhothai, Ayutthaya and Chiang Mai. These replicas are linked together by bike paths, making for a pleasant area to do a bit of cycling with family members, even those without more than a passing interest in architecture.

  Safari World

The age of Instagram has turned Safari World into somewhat of a social media darling, especially with images of cute and friendly giraffes extending their necks all the way to the viewing deck for visitors to pet them. There’s plenty to keep the kids busy, including dolphin, bird and seal shows. Visitors can even simulate an African-style safari with a 7km stretch of open space teeming with wildlife that can be explored by private car or van.

  Sea Life

Learn about sharks, penguins, whales and other marine creatures at Sea Life Bangkok with numerous zones to explore. Start with the Shark Walk – a glass window with views of the majestic creatures swimming just inches away. The more daring visitors can opt for a VIP experience where they can snorkel with sharks. The Coral Reef zone on the other hand, presents a myriad of colors with various types of corals and exotic fish. Another highlight of Sea Life is the Penguin Ice Playground where visitors can catch these fluffy creatures taking a swim or just waddling in a snowy backdrop.

Dream World

With a tagline that reads “the world of happiness,” visitors can forget about all their worries for a day with Dream World’s dizzying array of rides, haunted houses and colorful parades. The park also has a Snow Town – essentially a large enclosure filled with snow which even come with occasional snowfalls and even an ice slide for kids (and adults) to play.

  Siam Amazing Park

Another theme park you can check out in Bangkok is Siam Amazing Park . It is one of the longest standing amusement parks in Southeast Asia. While there are no snow enclosures here, visitors can revel in a dedicated water zone with a wading pool, swirling slides and mini slides for the kids. Despite being around for a while now, new attractions are habitually added to the theme park. One of the more recent additions include the Africa Adventure – a boat trip that takes one around a fictional island filled with robotic animals as well as a variety of flora.

This large outdoor mall in Bangkok has something to keep both adults and kids busy. Parents and elders can sift thru the many stalls. Think of it as like a night market but without the cramped spaces that often plague such venues. Kids on the other hand, can take a ride on the ferris wheel or have a spin at the merry-go-round. At night, Asiatique is quite a spectacle with illuminations throughout the complex. Coupled with a riverside setting, this makes for one of the more pleasant shopping and entertainment complexes in Bangkok.

Chao Phraya Cruise

Cruising down the Chao Phraya is an effective way to escape from Bangkok’s notorious traffic jams and also keep the entire family entertained. Take it slow while admiring views of some riverside landmarks such as Wat Arun, Iconsiam and Asiatique. There are also a number of options to choose from for the boat trip – from a simple water taxi hire to bring you from point to point to a large boat that can seat dozens of people and comes with live entertainment and buffet. A popular one is the Chao Phraya Princess Cruise. The onboard buffet includes assorted sashimi, steak and even desserts.

Families who love pets will enjoy the wide variety of “dog cafes” in Bangkok. Depending on your interest – you could go for a breed-specific dog cafe or a generic one. I personally went for Dog in Town Cafe which has outlets in Ari and Ekkamai. I specifically chose them because they have a number of breeds roaming around the cafe including Samoyed, Corgi, Shiba Inu and more. If you’d like a breed-specific dog cafe, you can also check out TrueLove at Neverland which is known for their Huskies as well as Corgi in the Garden for, you’ve guessed it, their irresistibly cute Corgis.

  Family-friendly hotels

Pamper the entire family with wholesome digs and keep them entertained even without stepping out of your lodgings. Some of Bangkok’s most kids-friendly hotels include Anantara Riverside Bangkok which has a spacious Family Suite that can easily accommodate 3 persons even without a rollaway bed as well as a Kid’s Club and Siam Kempinski with its thematic Family Suite and customized itinerary by its “kiddy concierge.”

How to plan a family trip to Bangkok

First up you’ll need to work out how long you’ll stay in Bangkok for. You’re probably visiting Bangkok as part of a family trip to Thailand and are likely to fly into and depart from Bangkok at the start and end of your adventure. Whilst it can be tempting to fly off to the pristine beaches and jungle covered islands straight away, make sure you give yourselves at least three days in Bangkok to explore and get over your jet lag. We like to fly into Bangkok, spend a few days there then have a couple of weeks exploring before flying home from somewhere like Phuket or Chiang Mai.

Bangkok Visas

The good news is that you probably wont need to organise a visa to travel to Thailand. UK passport holders can stay in Thailand for up to 45 days without the need for a visa and US passport holders for 30 days as both countries are part of the Thai visa exemption scheme. For more information have a look at the Thai Embassy website or the check out the UK Governments Thailand travel advice . You will obviously need your passport, accommodation details, travel insurance and return flight itinerary.

Vaccinations

Always visit your doctor several months before you travel, they will be able to advise you on any additional vaccinations you will need before you visit.

piper quinn getting her nails done in a beauty parlour in bangkok

Make sure you get excellent travel insurance as soon as you book. If anything happens to stop you’re family trip to Bangkok being possible or if anything happens when you’re there you’ll need it.

Before you leave take copies of passports, travel insurance, international drivers license (if you’re hiring a car) and a credit card. Leave one with family or friends and home and keep one in your luggage just incase you need these details or loose anything.

Then you can get on with planning the fun part of your Bangkok family trip – the activities and accommodation.

If you don’t have time to read this now pin this guide to Bangkok with kids and come back to it later.

Best Areas to stay in Bangkok with kids

Bangkok is huge. There are so many different areas to stay, each with their own very unique vibe. A lot of the attractions are fairly spread out so it’s not a case of staying in just one neighbourhood and being able to pack everything in. I’ve covered my favourite areas below but what I would say is wherever you choose – make sure it has a pool. It’s the only way to cool off at the end of a busy day exploring or help ease the jet lag on arrival.

Pool At Sathorn hotel In Bangkok

This is probably the best area to choose for first timers. It’s super easy to get around with plenty of BTS Stations and has loads of Western style restaurants and huge shopping Malls like Terminal 21. This doesn’t make it boring or lacking in authentic Bangkok experiences. The Soi Cowboy is located in Sukhumvit but this is probably not somewhere you’ll want to visit with kids. Sukhumvit is probably the worst part of Bangkok for its traffic.

Family friendly hotel in Sukhumvit: Sofitel Bangkok Sukhumvit

Riverside is where you’ll find the sprawling resort style hotels which make great places to escape to if the hustle and bustle of the city gets too much. Although Riverside isn’t close to the BTS stations, it’s very easy to hop on and hop of the river boats to get around the city. It feels like an exciting part of the visit, not just a way to get around. Have a look at my review of my favourite Riverside hotel Bangkok .

Family friendly hotel in Riverside: The Ramada Plaza Wyndham Menam Riverside

Sathorn is an area wedged between the back of Riverside and the edge of Lumphini. It’s home to a couple of BTS stations making it very easy to get around the city. It’s also very close to the epic shopping malls in Siam. Whilst there are several gorgeous rooftop bars in Sathorn, there’s not a hugely bustling nightlife scene so good for families looking for a peaceful nights sleep. Kids will also love a visit to neighbouring Lumphini Park to play in the splash pools and spot the monitor lizards.

Recommended hotel in Sathorn for families: The luxurious Banyan Tree .

Siam is a great option if you enjoy shopping. It’s home to some epic malls like Siam Paragon (designer goods), MBK (market style, great value) and Central World (pretty much everything) which are also have plenty of family friendly activities inside.

Family friendly hotel near Siam Paragon: The Siam Kempinski

Khao San Road

This needs a bit of a caveat. It’s busy, it’s backpackery and it’s noisy. If you’re a seasoned travel family and used to the slightly grimier side of South East Asia, then go for it. It’s super cheap and easy to get to many of the best sights of the city. But you wont find the lovely luxury hotels or quiet spacious retreats that often make a city break a bit more bearable with kids.

Recommended Hotel near Khao San Road: The Chillax Resort

The Khao San Road In Bangkok

Near the airports

If you really can only squeeze in one night at the start of your trip or have a very early flight the next morning then staying close to the airport is always a good idea. There’s the Suvarnabhumi night market if you want a nearby Thai experience before you flight from Suvarnabhumi airport. Or there’s Mega Bangna shopping mall which has a great kids water play area and other activities. For stays near the Don Mueng airport there’s the Royal Thai Air Museum and the Central Lad Phrao shopping centre.

Things to do in Bangkok for families

There are so many amazing things to do I’ve written a whole separate post on Things to do with kids in Bangkok . Trust me, you will not get bored. We love getting deep into a cities culture so whenever we visit Bangkok we tend to visit the temples, palaces and street markets. But if that’s not going to entertain the kids then you’ll find plenty of waterparks, play areas, shopping centres and indoor activities.

statue at wat arun in bangkok

If you’re tight on time I recommend spending time exploring the area around the Grand Palace, here it’s easy to pop in to Wat Pho to see the reclining Buddha, visit Museum Siam and cross the river to explore Wat Arun. Make sure you spend some time shopping along the Khao San Road and head to Siam for some street food and a trip to MBK Mall. Try to squeeze in a leg massage at one of the walk in parlours. It’s great value, fabulous for jet lag and feels amazing. One of my top tips for visiting Bangkok for the first time with kids is a visit to Bangkok Asiatique Riverfront , it’s an open air market with a carousel, ferris wheel and loads of great restaurants. It’s a fresh, clean Bangkok attraction with a very Western feel.

If you have more time in the city, there are loads of fascinating tours available just a few hours drive from the city. Just have a look at my post on Bangkok Family Tours or click some of the options below.

Toilets in Bangkok

Yes, this may seem like a slightly strange one to have a whole section on but it’s definitely worth adding to ensure you’re prepared. First up toilets in hotels, high end restaurants and luxury malls will be just like at home so if you get caught out, just pop into one of those.

Make sure you always have small packs of tissues and hand sanitiser with you. Toilet roll and soap is not always guaranteed in Thai public toilets. Most will have a water spray to use which can take some getting used to. Dry yourself with a tissue and pop it in the bin, not down the drain. Most toilets will be normal sit down types but you may come across some squat style toilets. It’s probably worth practicing your squats before you visit to build up some muscles. Some places may charge to use the toilet so always make sure you have some low value coins on you.

How to get around Bangkok with kids

Traffic is a way of life in Bangkok, it can feel never ending. If you want to get somewhere in a taxi, double the time you think it will take to get there so you’re not disappointed. We’ve hired a car in Bangkok once and I would never do it again. Driving is erratic and the traffic is so bad that for us it just wasn’t worth it. Walking can also be a bit tricky with uneven pavements and scooters using walkways to dodge traffic. Plus it’s super hot – the kids won’t want to walk too far.

bangkok MRT map

I highly recommend getting a Thai sim card at the airport or before you arrive online . That way you can follow your maps as you get move around the city and also check public transport routes on the go.

Public transport in Bangkok

A far better way to get around Bangok is to use the exceptional MRT and BTS public transport systems. The BTS is a skytrain which crosses Bangkok from North to South East. MRT is a subway. The whole network is still in development so you wont be able to get round the whole city but it covers most areas. Using it is super easy and cost efficient. If you think you’ll use it a lot you can buy a day pass from the ticket machines in all the stations. Kids under 90 cm can travel for free and those 14 and under and under 120 cm are half price. Just ask at one of the ticket booths although we’ve just bought full price tickets as the machines as so cheap and convenient.

The Chao Phraya River Ferry

River ferries are another fantastic way to get across the city. The express ferries stop all along the river with piers outside many of the popular tourist attractions like The Grand Palace and Wat Arun. You can also link up with the skytrain at Central Pier so access downtown Bangkok. Find out more about the Chao Phraya Express boats and it’s various routes and costs here .

two young girls on a river boat in bangkok, a great thing to do with kids in bangkok

You can also get a day pass for the Chao Phraya tourist boat. It’s a bit more expensive but really not much. We found is so easy being able to jump on and off where ever we saw somewhere we wanted to stop. The guides at all of the piers will be able to tell you which boats your tickets are valid for and which way along the river they are headed. You’ll also receive a little guidebook and map with your ticket which is really useful.

Getting around Bangkok by car

As soon as you arrive I recommend you download the Grab App – it’s Thailands equivalent of Uber. I’ve always found it far cheaper than taxis and you input exactly where you want to go so nothing gets lost in translation. You’ll also see how much your ride will cost and having your card details stored on the App means you don’t need to carry too much cash. Taxis in Bangkok are notoriously unregulated and I’ve heard so many horror stories of drivers refusing to turn on their meter or taking you somewhere completely different to where you want to go. Grab takes away all the risk but unfortunately not the traffic. Bolt is another similar app you can try.

long line of traffic in bangkok

Tuk Tuks in Bangkok

And of course – try a tuk tuk trip at least once. They’re not the cheapest way to get around and can be uncomfortable over long distances but if your in Bangkok with kids they’ll absolutely love it. Bonus points if you use one after dark, they’re lit up with fairly lights. As ever, agree a price for your trip up front.

Where to eat in Bangkok with family

One thing is for sure – you won’t go hungry in Bangkok. There is literally a restaurant to suit every taste. You’ll find all the usual western fast food options dotted around the international malls but most of the restaurants will have a few western dishes if the kids are picky. Piper spent years pretty much only eating spaghetti bolognaise on our travels. We never had trouble finding it in Bangkok restaurants.

young girl dancing on stage at the hard rock cafe in Bangkok

When we’re in Bangkok we don’t tend to visit traditional restaurants, we start the day with a huge hotel breakfast then street food our way around the city. We eat when we get hungry, following our noses (easy to do in Bangkok!) and stopping at stalls that look clean and busy. This is incredibly cheap and fairly healthy and means the kids can try lots of different flavours without breaking the bank. Do not worry about stopping at smaller local restaurants if you want to sit down to eat, again food and hygiene standards seem high. It’s a great way to try some traditional Thai dishes very cheaply.

Is Bangkok safe for families

We have never had a problem with crime in Bangkok. There is rarely trouble in the city and most Thais absolutely adore children so will go out of their way to ensure they are safe. Pickpocketing and bag snatching is always something to be aware of in any big city so keep your valuables safe and wear a money belt or something similar.

ypung girl stood outside wat arun in bangkok

Scams are also something to be aware of. I’ve heard many stories of families getting in taxis or tuk tuks and being taken somewhere completely different to where they wanted, then having the fare doubled to go a different way. You may request to go to the Grand Palace and your driver will pull up to te back entrance telling you it is shut. Then they’ll take you somewhere else randomly and expect more money. ALWAYS agree a fare upfront or just use public transport or Grab. If someone tells you they will take you to an amazing gem shop or something similar for free, they are probably trying to get you to buy something – just don’t go.

back entrance to the grand palace

Bangkok Traffic

I think the traffic is one of the most dangerous parts of Bangkok. Crossing the road is terrifying and pedestrian crossings seem more of a suggestion than a rule. Keep your wits about you and only cross when you are sure its safe. Do not let the kids wander anywhere near a road and use the over road pedestrian walkways whenever possible.

Staying healthy in Bangkok

It’s important to look after everybody’s health in Bangkok, tropical climates can be tough on kids. Make sure you all drink more water than you thought possible and consistently remind the kids. Don’t drink the tap water, we also avoid using tap water to clean our teeth, using bottled to rinse instead. Ice is generally safe in drinks but if you are nervous about this just avoid it. Always ensure cooked food is piping hot when you eat it and that any meat is cooked through. Pick the busiest street food stalls and ones where you can see they have running water – this means properly washed plates and essentials. Use hand sanitiser often, before eating and after using public transport.

piper quinn at a restaurant in bangkok drinking a bottle of water through a straw

Apply suncream often even on cloudy days. The rays are strong and sunburn or worse can ruin a holiday. It’s a good idea to wear long, loose clothes which will give you an extra layer of protection. And a large sun hat to protect faces and scalps.

Shopping for kids in Bangkok

You can find everything you need for the kids in Bangkok. It really is a shoppers paradise. Whether you’re looking for cheap and cheerful or high end designer there will be a shop to suit you in Bangkok.

girl looking at a shopping mall in bangkok

Shopping for deals in Bangkok

My preferred way to shop for kids in Bangkok is at the street markets. If you’re low on time the Khao San Road is a good bet as you can tick off one of Bangkoks tourist sites while you’re there. Chatuchack weekend market is another good one and you can visit the park next door after your visit. For unique, artisan finds then the Plane market in Thonburi is your best bet.

High End shopping in Bangkok

For high end designer stores then Siam Paragon Mall has all the high end international brands you can think of and is home to Bangkoks Sea life Aquarium. Central World is another good place for designer shops and is absolutely huge as is the stunning Iconsiam Mall which is located right next to the river.

inside iconsiam shopping mall

Everyday finds in Bangkok

For something between the two I recommend trying the MBK mall which has a distinctly market like feel with small independent stalls with owners who don’t mind a bit of a haggle. They sell clothing, accessories, bags and luggage to furniture, mobile phones and electrical appliances, cameras and toys. Theres also a pretty decent food court if you’re peckish.

Shopping for essentials in Bangkok

For everyday essentials there’s a 7 Eleven on pretty much every corner. Here you can get toiletries and a limited range of make up, over the counter medicines such as painkillers and plasters. It’s my go to for picking up snacks like crisps and sweets, some of their freshly baked goods are amazing and cans of beer and soda to take back to the hotel. Always buy bottle of water when you stop at a 7 Eleven, you cannot drink the tap water in Bangkok and it is so important to keep you and the kids hydrated. You’ll also see plenty of Boots pharmacies which are great for a bigger range of medicine including for young kids and they all seem to have English speaking assistants.

Shopping for a baby in Bangkok

If you’re in Bangkok with a baby then you will be able to get nappies and formula from 7 Elevens or Tesco Lotus. Western brands are pretty expensive or unavailable. The nappies are fine but you might want to bring formula just incase.

Read my full guide to shopping for kids in Bangkok .

Packing for your family trip to Bangkok.

As I’ve mentioned you can buy pretty much everything you need in Bangkok so there really is no need to overpack. In addition to your favourite vacation outfits there are a few things I recommend bringing in your suitcase that you may struggle to find in Thailand.

And remember another reason not to over pack – there are super cheap laundry places everywhere. Drop your clothes off and they’ll be freshly washed, ironed and folded for you within 24 hours. Don’t feel you have to use the laundry service in your hotel, it’s always way more expensive and you’ll be giving small local people your business.

Essentials to bring from home

I always bring a really good mosquito spray and branded suncream . My daughter is allergic to most brands so I can’t risk being caught out when we arrive. Suncream should be 30 SPF at a very minimum, ideally SPF 50. This is the same for any other branded toiletries or make up you’re particularly fond of – there’s no guarantee you’ll find it in Thailand. Although if you do run out or forget – head to Siam Paragon and they’ll probably have something similar.

Feminine hygiene products are again something I throw in the case. Thailand brands are different. I also pack period swimwear for my teenage daughter.

If you have a spare mobile phone at home it’s a great idea to bring one. You can very cheaply pick up a Thai sim card when you arrive at Bangkok airport. We got ours at the baggage collection area but you’ll also find them in the arrivals hall past customs. If you miss this you can easily buy them from one of the many 7 elevens dotted around the city. Being connected was so useful to help navigate around the city, check routes on the go, make sure we had hotel and tour confirmation to hand and even for my daughter to hot spot to it and check in on her socials when we were out and about.

Two weeks of unlimited data cost us just over £20 which was great value and we had coverage all over Thailand. Some of the booths are cash only so make sure you have easy access to cash when you arrive.

where to buy a sim card at bangkok airport

Any prescription medicine will also need to be bought from home. Make sure you bring the original prescription with you as well. We also bring a bottle of Calpol and Piriton, brands we recognise and know work from home. We carry electrolyte sachets in our travel medicine kit to help with dehydration and imodium tablets for dodgy tummies. Most of these can be picked up from Thai pharmacies but you might not recognise the brand names.

Bring portable Power banks so you can charge phones and devices on the go and a multi socket plug to avoid arguments over the chargers back at the hotel.

young girl in long yellow dress posing infront of zoom bar sign at night in bangkok

Packing for babies

For a baby, formula, bottles, steriliser and swim nappies. If your baby sleeps in a grow bag bring one from home. You’ll also want to bring your car seat if you plan on getting taxis or hiring a car. I always got nervous renting one of these overseas. As Piper got older we used a Bubble bum . Baby friendly mosquito repellent and a mosquito net are a good idea. UV protective clothing and swimwear with long sleeves and legs will provide an additional layer of protection over baby friendly sun block. A cute hat is an absolute must.

Preparing kids for your Bangkok family trip

There are a few things you might want to pre warn your kids about before arriving on your family holiday in Bangkok.

There’s nothing quite like the smell of the Bangkok streets. I don’t even know how to begin to describe it. It’s sewers, food, fumes and goodness knows what else. It’s not everywhere in the city and will creep up on you without warning. Trust me, after a few days you won’t even notice but a dab of tiger balm under the nose definitely helps.

inside the local food markets in bangkok

The pavements

Bangkok is not an easy city to walk, many roads will have no pavements at all and some will have pavements that look like they’ve been exploded. It’s easy to get around the city without walking but when you do, watch your footing and always wear closed toe shoes. Stubbed toes can lead to epic meltdowns. This will make life easier in the toilets too!

shanty town on side of the river bangkok

The friendliness of strangers

The people of Thailand are super friendly, it is nicknamed the land of smiles after all! And Thai people absolutely love kids. They will sometimes ask to touch little ones – they sometimes wont even ask. Or they may try to take photos. It’s pretty much always completely innocent but can feel quite disconcerting, especially for young kids. A firm “no” and head shake will stop it, just remind the kids to stay close. There also isn’t much personal space and rarely a queueing system – just stand your ground.

The traffic

Traffic in Bangkok is horrendous. You’ll see traffic jams snake all around the city with tuk tuks and mopeds nipping in and out of spaces. There seems to be no rules and a lot of beeping. It can take hours to get from one part of the city to another. I recommend using the BTS and MRT whenever you can.

outdoor stall selling goods in bangkok

The heat in Bangkok feels inescapable. Sometimes dry, sometimes humid but also hot. High end Malls, restaurants and hotels will always have air conditioned which make for good places to cool down. Just take it very slow with kids, they will need more breaks than usual and plenty of water.

This is a tropical climate – you may see some cockroaches and we even saw a couple of rats. Just breathe and look away, they wont be in your hotel.

girls cooling their faces in front of a fan in a bangkok temple

Thai words to learn before your visit

Thai is the language spoken in Bangkok. Although all children are also taught English at school so most people have a general grasp. It puts us Westerners to shame! Most of the road signs and information sign will be in both Thai and English. It’s still a good idea to learn a few Thai words before you arrive. The locals you meet will really appreciate it.

Basically females end sentences with the word ka/kap and males with Khrup/krap. You (and the kids) will be met with delight, even if you get it a bit wrong.

HELLO – Sa Wat Dee ka/khrup – pronounced sa-wat-dee ka/khrup . Teach the kids this one and you’ll be met with nothing but smiles!

THANK YOU – Kawp Koon ka/khrup – pronounced kop-koon ka/khrup . Accompany this with the “Wai” which is small bow.

NO – Mai Chai – pronounced my-chai . This is a good one to know for any hagglers in the markets or over enthusiastic taxi drivers.

TOO EXPENSIVE – Phaeng Mark Pai – pronounced feng-mak-pie . Definitely one you’ll need for market days.

The best time to visit Bangkok

For me the best time to visit Bangkok is absolutely anytime you can. It’s always pretty hot, and often fairly grey. It can rain at anytime and will always be pretty busy. If you’re heading somewhere else in Thailand before or after your visit to Bangkok I would pick the best times for those. For instance Chiang Mai and the North is best avoided in the early months of the year. And rainy season starts on the southern islands in May/June until October.

Mother And Daughter Watching The Rain On The Khao San Road, Bangkok

Thailand is a great choice for the school summer holidays. But my favourite time to visit is during the Easter break and ideally over Songkran , Thailands New Year celebration (although this can be expensive and is when it is hottest). Bangkoks coolest season is November – February. Although by cool I still mean up to 30 degrees so it’s a great place for winter sun.

How to travel to Bangkok with kids

Bangkok has two airports Don Mueng to the North of the city and Suvarnabhumi to the East. With the usual Bangkok traffic and depending on where you’re staying in the city it will take you between forty minutes add an hour to get to your hotel from each airport in a taxi. If you’re arriving internationally you’ll likely land at Suvarnabhumi or domestically into either one. A taxi or Grab from the airport will cost around 400 Baht.

An easier way to get into the city from Suvarnabhumi is to take the airport link. Just follow the signs after arrivals. You’ll want to exit the train at Phaya Thai Station then transfer to the BTS line and find the station nearest your hotel. This way you beat the Bangkok traffic but it might not be easiest with little kids and lots of luggage. There is no easy public transport link from Don Mueng so a grab or taxi is still your best bet.

Movies and TV shows to watch before your trip to Bangkok

Most movies and shows I’ve found based in Bangkok are not particularly family friendly. You could check out the Hangover Part II , The Beach and the rather excellent The Serpent . all suitable for older teens. James Bond epic The Man with the Golden Gun is mainly based in Phuket but it does have some scenes filmed in Bangkok and is suitable for most kids. Jack Whitehall did an episode of Travels with my father in Bangkok. Yup, it’s a bit slim pickings when it comes to things to watch about Bangkok.

Books to read before your trip to Bangkok

There are plenty of books to read before your trip to Bangkok, some to read along with younger kids and some for older tweens and teens. Aya & Bobby Discover Thailand is a great picture book to help prepare younger kids for their visit to Bangkok. B is for Bangkok follows a day in the life of a Thai Child. For older readers have a look at Bangkok Wakes to Rain or try The Glass Kingdom which is set in the city. If you’re after some non-fiction informational guides then you can’t go wrong with Lonely Planets guide to Bangkok .

view of wat arun from across the river

I hope you’ve found this guide to Bangkok with kids helpful for planning your Bangkok family trip. It really is one of the best cities in the world to experience with children. The whole of Thailand is incredibly family friendly so don’t restrict yourselves to Bangkok. Chiang Mai in the North is a fabulous culture filled typical Thai city or head further south to the gorgeous family friendly Thai islands like Phuket or Koh Samui.

Family Trip to Bangkok: Where to stay, what to see and what to eat

December 10, 2019 By Abel Cheng

Ayutthaya, Thailand

Even though Bangkok is just 2 hours 5 minutes from Kuala Lumpur, I never stepped into the capital of Thailand before. I have been to other cities of Thailand but not Bangkok.

We went to Bangkok during the Deepavali holidays which stretched over 5 days including weekend. Besides our family, my parents in law are with us on the trip. Except my wife, J and K have never been to Bangkok as well.

My wife already planned for this vacation months before the trip. First by making a flight reservation, of course. Then booking of accommodation and planning out the itinerary.

We have planned the itinerary almost perfectly but as it turns out, not all are being followed. Below is what we do in Bangkok, written in chronological order, day by day.

Insider Tips

But first, let me share some insider tips that you should know when traveling to Bangkok.

  • Communication still a problem as majority of Thai people can’t speak basic English even taxi drivers and waitresses. Fortunately our hotel staff are quite fluent in the language.
  • Bangkok’s traffic is one of the most notorious in the world. Be prepared for it especially when you travel to the airport during peak hours. Make a buffer in case you’re caught in the jam.
  • The weather can be extremely hot during this time of year. Bring along your hat or umbrella. Wear breathable clothing. Even we go prepared, we still can’t stand the heat.
  • If you travel in a group (4 or 6), it’s cheaper to travel by taxi or Grab. If you travel alone, bus or train (BTS) is your best friend.
  • Bargain, bargain, bargain. Bargain and agree with a price when you shop at a market (eg: Chatuchak). It’s even more so for taxi. I find the fare of a taxi (who doesn’t use meter) is much higher than a Grab taxi . To give a proper perspective, I can take a Grab for 72 baht while a taxi not using meter or tuk tuk ask for 100 baht for the same ride. On one instance, they even ask for 200 baht!). The taxi drivers don’t usually use meters but if you can find one who does, grab it. For our group of six, Grab is our goto transportation. If we can’t get a SUV or MPV, we split into two sedan cars.
  • For those who want to be connected all the time in a foreign land and don’t want to pay an exorbitant price of international roaming, there’s a highly affordable solution that is to use a local SIM card provided by a local telco DTAC. Details below.
  • For accommodation, we use Agoda. Over there you can find any type of stay that suits your budget and lifestyle.
  • For other travel packages that make your life easier such as private transfers, group tour packages, entrance tickets, we use Klook. Sometimes, what you pay at Klook is cheaper than what you pay at the establishment.

Day 1: 25 October

Parking at airport and flight to bangkok.

KLIA2 car park

As with our Kuching trip last year, we park our car at the airport car park . As it turns out, based on our calculation, the car park fee is cheaper than if we were to take a cab to the airport and back. In this case, we need two cabs. So the fare is double. For 4 days of parking, the fee is RM178.

Flight from Kuala Lumpur to Bangkok takes 2 hours and 10 minutes. We reach Don Mueang International Airport (DMK) in Bangkok at 8.17 pm local time.

Immediately after exiting the arrival hall, I collect my pre-booked local SIM card at a counter in the airport. I purchased this “4G SIM Card for Thailand” via Klook . The price of RM18 (100 baht) is highly affordable and the SIM card lasts for 8 days with unlimited data, calls, and texts. I can even do Hotspot sharing with this card.

Checking in hotel

To get to our hotel, we have arranged for a private transfer before hand, also through Klook. The cost is RM131 but if you’re in a small group, taking a cab might be a cheaper alternative. We wait for the driver based on instructions in the email but nobody is there waiting for me. I immediately put the newly inserted SIM card to use.

meeting point

I contact Klook to seek clarification. Luckily there’s reply from them on WhatsApp. It happens that we are waiting at the wrong place due to an outdated instruction in the email. We are supposed to wait for the driver in front of Gate 2, the meeting point. There’s a Klook staff (with other operators as well) manning the makeshift kiosk with all the customers’ names pinned up.

Kritthai Residence

After the minor hiccup, we finally board a van. A huge, nicely decorated VIP van. We reach hotel in 40 minutes. After checking in and putting away our luggage, we go down to look for dinner. It’s already over 10 pm by then and the hotel receptionist tells us that all shops are closed by now.

McDonald's Pork Burger

Luckily, there’s a McDonald’s just next block, only one minute walk. I try the pork burger which is not available in Malaysia. Anyway I don’t find the burger good. That dinner wraps up our first day in Bangkok.

Day 2: 26 October

Chatuchak market.

fam trip to bangkok

Despite the reputation as the “world’s largest” market with 10,000 stalls, we almost skip Chatuchak Market as I think it’s too touristy and only cheap and low quality products are found there.

It turns out I was wrong after I go there.

Fortunately we go ahead somehow. The hotel receptionist advises us to call for a taxi instead of taking BTS train to Chatuchak Market as we are in a large group. It works out that the train tickets cost almost as much as a taxi, if not more expensive. By taking a taxi, we don’t need to walk so much as we will be dropped at the market entrance. The taxi fare arranged by our hotel costs 350 baht.

It is about 20 minutes of drive to Chatuchak from where we stay (Bangkok CBD).

Chatuchak Market

Chatuchak Market is seriously a huge area and we can get lost easily if not careful. You can get a map of Chatuchak Market at Gate 1. The market sells everything under the sun, literally. From foodstuff to pet stuff, from clothes to souvenirs, from medicine to aromatherapy, from Thai silk to Thai massage. You name it, they have it.

Chatuchak Market

We buy some bags, purses, and clothes. Plus Tiger balm for my mother; ChaTraMue green tea and Nestea.

Chatuchak Market

I hunt for roast pork which I read about while doing research about Chatuchak. It’s so tempting that I have to buy it and chew it down there and then.

Chatuchak Market

We spend about 4 hours here and still not done yet. Were it not for the hot weather, we might be able to finish walking the market. We give up and call a taxi back to hotel at Gate 2 of Chatuchak Market. The taxi driver offered 400 baht but we managed to bargain for 300 baht. They do have big taxi such as Innova for 6 persons which suits us perfectly well.

Note: We go to the Chatuchak in the morning around 9:30. But my wife’s Thai friend advises that the best time to go there is in the evening. While it’s not too hot and many peddlers are throwing discounts on their products before the day ends. That’s the right timing if you want to buy more with less.

Opening hours: Saturdays and Sundays, 09:00 – 18:00 Fridays 18:00 – 24:00

Lunch at Pordee

Pordee Pad Thai Bangkok

We ask the taxi to drop us at a pad Thai restaurant near our hotel so we can grab our lunch. Pordee Pad Thai’s specialty is pad Thai. About 90 baht per plate. After that we walk around the area where many shops sell sports equipment. We dropped by 7-Eleven to check out their products. We buy Oishi black tea lemon and Betagen yogurt drink.

Lay's tom yum flavor

My wife buys Lays potato chips with special Thai flavours such as tom yum, salted egg from Tesco. We find that the chips are so much cheaper at a supermarket than Chatuchak Market.

Thai Massage

Most people will agree with me that if we don’t go for a massage in Thailand, your trip will not be complete. Hence, my wife and I head to a nearby parlor (walking distance from hotel) for a neck and shoulder massage: 200 baht for a 30-minute session. It is reasonably well. Other than that, it offers various types of massages: foot, oil, Thai, neck and shoulder, and even manicure and pedicure. A great way to relax your stiff muscles after a day’s intensive walking.

Dinner with a Thai Friend

Ohkajhu Bangkok

We have dinner with my wife’s former colleague who lives in Bangkok. He takes us to a hugely popular restaurant called Ohkajhu . Why I say popular He is so kind to be there early and he has to wait for one hour to have a seat. You can’t make a reservation unless you’re somewhere near the restaurant and you can only do so with their app.

We walk there by following Google Maps. It’s about 20 minutes’ walk from our hotel. The restaurant is just opposite Hard Rock. The place is packed to the brim with people.

Ohkajhu Bangkok

Our friend orders on our behalf. He showers us with Thai’s warm hospitality and generosity by ordering a lot of food for us. It is so much that we can’t finish our food. Even K who always complain about not enough food surrenders.

Ohkajhu Bangkok

The portion is scaringly huge and the food is fresh and tasty and healthy without overpowering seasoning. We are really grateful to him for bringing us there.

Ohkajhu Bangkok

What makes this restaurant popular is the concept of farm to table. That means they plant their own vegetables in Chiang Mai and it’s transported to their restaurants around Thailand. And it’s all organic. It has 3 restaurants the same vicinity and yet it’s still very crowded.

Erawan Shrine

Erawan Shrine Bangkok

Later we walk to Erawan Shrine. It’s quite a distance from the restaurant; about 30 minutes. Erawan Shrine is one of the most popular Hindu shrines in downtown Bangkok. It’s in front of Grand Hyatt Erawan Hotel, at the corner of Ploenchit and Ratchadamri Road.

Erawan Shrine Bangkok

Throughout the day (and night), you’ll often see crowds (locals as well as foreigners) paying their respects, presenting flowers and incense sticks to a gold sculpture of Brahma God, Than Tao Mahaprom. Some prayers even dedicate dance to the four faced Lord.

We are too tired to walk back to our hotel and we try to hail a taxi that stuck in the jam. He quoted us 200 baht which I think is too expensive. We walk away and find a tuk tuk who also offered us 200. I too find the price is ridiculous and I slash the price to 50 baht but he rolls his eyes and drive away in an unbelievably look. I finally use Grab and the fare is only 72 baht. However we have to wait for about 15 minutes due to traffic congestion.

Lesson learned: It’s better to use proper taxi and negotiate for a more reasonable fare. Tuk tuk can be quite a risk unless you want the thrills of the ride.

Location: Ratchadamri Rd, Lumphini, Pathum Wan, Bangkok 10330, Thailand. ( In front of Grand Hyatt Erawan Hotel )

Opening Hours: Daily from 6am to 11pm

Admission: Free

BTS: Chidlom

Day 3: 27 October

Day trip to ayutthaya unesco town.

Before the trip, I contacted a driver I found on Facebook to book for a day trip. After comparing 3, I finally picked one with the best rating but not the cheapest. The transport from Bangkok to Ayutthaya costs 3400 baht (initial quote is 3500) for a 10-hour tour. The van is nicely decorated with lights and comfortable upholstery.

Ayutthaya is 80km north of Bangkok and the historical town is about an hour’s drive from the Thai capital. It’s awarded UNESCO world heritage status in 1991.

Bang Pa-in Summer Palace

Bang Pa-in Summer Palace

First stop is Bang Pa-in palace. An old palace with an area of 46 acres, a huge compound with a lake. The view is grandiose and serene but you have to walk a bit. With the hot weather it doesn’t help. If walking is not your thing, you can rent a buggy for 400 baht per hour. And you can choose to have a driver or you can choose to drive yourself.

Bang Pa-in Summer Palace

The palace has many interesting structures such as a Chinese temple, a lookout tower, a bridge. The palace is well maintained and clean. We sweat like hell and we can’t finish touring the whole palace.

Address: Bang Pa-In District Ayutthaya District.

Opening Hours: 8 am to 4 pm. Dress appropriately, no shorts and slippers.

Admission: 100 baht

Wat Yai Chai Mongkol

Wat Yai Chai Mongkol

The second stop is Wat Yai Chai Mongkol (Mongkhon). It was built by King U-thong in 1357 A.D. for the use of the monks who had returned from Ceylon after studying under Phra Vanarat Maha Thera. Wat Yai Chai Mongkol is located a few kilometers southeast of Ayutthaya (island). You’ll have to cross the Pridithamrong bridge out of the city.

Wat Yai Chai Mongkol

A totally different kind of view. The Buddhist monastery is majestic and breathtaking. And there’s huge statue of the Buddha with flight of steps. A nice spot for pictures.

Wat Yai Chai Mongkol

Also there’s a reclining Buddha near the entrance.

I am not sure if we need to pay for the entrance but when we are there, nobody asks us to buy any tickets.

Lunch at Kauy Tiew Pak Wan

I found a few places for lunch while in Ayutthaya and propose to the driver and he picks Kauy Tiew Pak Wan. I thought it was small outlet but boy was I wrong. The restaurant is huge and packed with hungry customers when we arrive. The place is extremely popular with the locals and its Ayutthaya specialty: kuay tiew. We wait for a while to be seated. Again, language is a problem here because they can’t explain to us what they have on the menu. We just guess our way through. Some we get it correct, some wrong. The food turns out okay but most of it very sourish and super hot.

In fact, there’s not much choice for food in Ayutthaya and we can’t be picky about what we eat.

Kauy Tiew Pak Wan

Restaurant, Thai, Halal, Asian, Vegetarian

Everyday 7.30 am to 9 pm

Wat Maha That

Wat Maha That

After lunch, we continue our tour and this time we stop at Wat Maha That.

Wat Maha That

Wat Phra Mahathat is mostly famous for having a buddha’s head entwined in the roots of a banyan tree. It’s more than that.

Wat Maha That

It’s a huge area with an ancient temple around it. It takes a while for us to complete the tour. It’s even longer if you stop and take pictures.

Admission 50 baht.

Wat Phra Si Sanphet

Wat Phra Si Sanphet

We walk until the entrance but we don’t go in. Too hot and too tired.

Elephant ride in Ayutthaya

Along the road to the entrance of this monastery, you can spot some elephants ferrying people on the roadside.

Locals free.

We can’t continue sight seeing anymore due to its super hot weather. We ask the driver to drop us at a cafe for us to cool down and relax.

Malakor Cafe

Malakor Cafe

Based on my research this is one of the best cafes in Ayutthaya. It has a restaurant and a cafe. We don’t dine at the restaurant but drink at the cafe. They serve coffee, cold drinks and pastries. We bump into a British who teaches in Ayutthaya at the cafe and he recommends us to go to Krungsri Night Market. He highly recommends it as its not too touristy and it’s beautiful. But it only opens at 6pm which is too late for us. We have to give it a skip this time as we need to reach the city before 8 pm.

Malakor Kitchen and Cafe

Tambon Tha Wa Su Kri Chang Wat Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya, 13000, Thailand

10 am -10 pm everyday

Chocolate Ville

Chocolate Ville Bangkok

Since we did not finish what we planned out to do in Ayutthaya, the driver is kind enough to suggest an alternative place we can visit before we call it a day. The place is in the suburb of Bangkok and it’s called Chocolate Ville.

Chocolate Ville Bangkok

When you’re there, it’s like you are transported to a European country. You don’t feel like in Bangkok anymore. You won’t find chocolate there but the view is breathtaking. It’s an excellent place to to take stunning pictures. Best of all, the entrance is free.

Chocolate Ville Bangkok

Inside the theme park is an open air restaurant, serving fusion food of Italian, Thai, and Asian. Chocolate Ville takes up a huge area and it takes at least an hour for you to enjoy the view on a stroll. The park cum restaurant is about 30 – 45 minutes from Bangkok CBD depending in traffic.

Soi Nawamin 74, Yak 3-8, Kaset-Nawamin Road, Klong Kum Subdistrict, Bueng Kum District.

Bangkok, Thailand 10230

Dinner at MBK Mall

We ask the driver to take us to MBK Mall which is near to our hotel for a quick dinner. After searching around, we finally settle at Yum Saap, a local Thai food chain. Unfortunately, overall we don’t like the food there.

After You Dessert

To compensate for that, we have dessert at After You, one of the up and coming dessert cafes in Thailand, on the third floor. Though the price is steep but we enjoy the desserts. K especially loves the Shibuya Honey Toast (195 baht). The toast is yummy and the butter smells good.

After You Dessert

Mango sticky rice kakigori shaved iced (265 baht) is another dessert we order which is fine too. It’s cooling and its melt-in-the-mouth goodness will make you forget where you are. After You can be found all over Bangkok in every mall. You won’t have a hard time looking for it.

Day 4: 28 October

Based on our original itinerary, we plan to go temple and palace hopping (Gand Palace, Wat Phra Kaew, Wat Pho, Wan Arun. And we will end up in Chinatown in the evening) today along the river. From our experience yesterday, we can’t stand the heat of Bangkok. With great sadness, we scrap the plan.

We have to go for an alternative instead.

Baan Silapin (The Artist’s House)

Baan Silapin (The Artist?™s House)

I wanted the driver to Ayutthaya to drive us to Baan Silapin on the way back from the ancient city but he refused as he claimed that it was out of the way. He will do it unless we pay extra. Of course I didn’t.

What we do instead is we get the help of hotel receptionist to rent a taxi to Baan Silapin. It turns out to be a Toyota Fortuner, for 400 baht. I read about this place while doing research and many tourists recommend this place. So I put in on my list of places to visit in Bangkok. The most popular activity there is puppet show and it’s free. Unfortunately, no puppet show that day.

Baan Silapin (The Artist?™s House)

So there’s nothing to do there really. You can get yourself some souvenirs or have a cup of coffee.

Baan Silapin (The Artist?™s House)

I just stroll along the river on the platform. You can have a closer look at the houses along the river. These are real people living there. The houses on tilt are old but some are well maintained.

Baan Silapin (The Artist?™s House)

Or you can buy colorful fish food to feed the fish in the river.

We also want to visit a nearby floating market but it’s not open that day.

Central World Shopping Mall

fam trip to bangkok

We go back to the city and do some shopping at Central World by Grab taxis. Almost the same price as we came here: 400 baht. Not easy to book a big taxi. So we book 2 Grab taxis. Due to heavy traffic we took 45 minutes to reach Central World Shopping Mall.

Nara Thai Cuisine

We have lunch at Nara Thai Cuisine on the 7th floor. The decor is cosy and feels luxurious. The restaurant is packed and full of customers.

Uniqlo x KAWS

We go to Uniqlo and are in shock to still find KAWS X UNIQLO t-shirts there. They are on sale. These t-shirts caused a huge stir in most Asian countries when they were launched about 6 months ago and it ran out of stock literally the minute the shops were opened.

Cha Tra Mue

We also try Thailand’s famous Thai milk tea, Cha Tra Mue. But I find the jasmine flavor is overpowering.

We take a Grab taxi back to hotel. Again it’s proven that normal taxi and tuk tuk are more expensive. They don’t want to use meter as it’s cheaper by 50 percent. The taxi and tuk tuk quote me 100 baht. But Grab only costs me 72 baht.

We plan to go to Chinatown in the evening but the hotel staff advise us not to as street food is not allowed to open on Mondays in Bangkok. The main attraction of Chinatown is food. If you go there and there’s not much food available, then it defeats the purpose of going there.

We end up having dinner at Tesco Lotus, near our hotel. We dine at MK Restaurant, a steamboat restaurant. The dinner sets us back by 1300 baht. Again, language is a huge barrier as not many waitresses speak English. We can’t even managed to get soy sauce for the dinner, for God’s sake.

Later we go to Tesco to buy more Lays chips with exotic Thai flavors (self consumed and as gifts) and Mama instant noodles – Thailand’s home brand.

Supper at Jeh O Chula

Jeh O Chula Bangkok

One of the hottest dining places in Bangkok. We are prepared to wait long for this. We walk to Jeh O Chula for its famous Mama tom yum noodles. We reach 10:14 pm and are told the waiting time is one hour.

Jeh O Chula Bangkok

First thing when you reach is to get a queue number. In anticipation of a huge crowd, there are stools provided while waiting. Have a drink first if you’d like.

Our number is called at 10.53 pm, quite a relief as it’s less than one hour. Besides tom yum noodles, they do serve other dishes.

Jeh O Chula Bangkok

We order roast pork (100 baht), Chinese sausage (40 baht), and the main attraction of the night tom yum noodle. There are 3 varieties (seafood, pork balls, roast pork, or all-in-one) but we order the all-in-one good for 3 with medium level of spiciness. It turns out the noodles are not spicy at all. So we can order the high spicy level next time. Though the Michelin rated restaurant is packed, the crowd is well organized. The service is excellent and prices are highly affordable. We are done in 30 minutes. Total bill is 450 baht.

Insider tip: you can call in to make booking. Waiting time is just 30 minutes.

Day 5: October 29

Last day of our trip. We have only first half of the day to spend in Bangkok before taking a taxi to the airport.

Jim Thompson House

Kritthai Residence Breakfast

As usual, we have breakfast at the hotel. After which, we walk to Jim Thompson House which is about 250m from where we stay.

Jim Thompson House

Jim Thompson is famous for Thai silk. From dresses to scarfs, from handkerchiefs to hats.

Jim Thompson House

If you like architecture and gardening, Jim Thompson House is a must go. It consists of a boutique, cafe, a Thai restaurant, and the main star attraction: museum. The admission is free except the museum. JTH is well maintained and it has a well-manicured garden.

Jim Thompson House

We take the elegant tuk tuk provided by JTH back to our hotel.

Address: Soi Kasemsan 2, opposite the National Stadium on Rama I Road.

Opening Hours: 09:00-17:00 (last guided tour at 17:00)

Bangkok Art and Culture Centre (BACC)

Bangkok Art and Culture Centre (BACC)

Another attraction that is close to where we stay. Only a 5-minute walk from our hotel and it’s located opposite MBK Mall. The Art and Cultural Centre is the hub of Bangkok’s burgeoning art scene and offers the widest range of contemporary art, design, music, theater and film in the city. Located only a few minutes walk National Stadium BTS it hosts a number of changing exhibitions from both Thai and International artists.

Bangkok Art and Culture Centre (BACC)

The architecture of Bangkok Art and Culture Centre is also unique with its spiral stairs. Many shops and cafes lined up the hallways of the art centre; selling handicrafts, stationery, jewelry, books, paintings.

9 things you should know before visiting Bangkok

Make the most of your time in bustling Bangkok with our 9 insider tips © Witthaya Prasongsin / Getty Images © © Witthaya Prasongsin / Getty Images

I moved to Bangkok in 1999, a time when most visitors to Thailand reluctantly did a night in this megacity before beelining to an island or the north. Synonymous with traffic jams, pollution and urban sprawl, the Thai capital was largely seen as an unwanted but obligatory stopover.

Decades later, things have changed and Bangkok is now the destination of choice for many visitors – with good reason. Easier to get around and cleaner than ever, with a vibrant eating and drinking scene that caters to just about every budget and an enviable spread of intriguing sights and fantastic-value shopping, the city has more to offer than ever before.

Yet like any big city, Bangkok has its quirks and surprises. Here's what you need to know before you go.

Find out what you should know in advance about Thailand , including important cultural, religious and legal issues, etiquette and health.

Bangkok is easier to get around than ever

Bangkok used to be synonymous with traffic jams and air pollution. The jams still happen, but the good news is that the city’s public transportation system has grown immensely. The various above and underground rail networks currently unite 10 different lines – with more in the works – and 192 stations, including trains linking both of Bangkok’s international airports and the city center.

On top of this, taxis remain ubiquitous and cheap – though subject to the issues that make the city’s traffic so infamous – while quirky public transportation systems such as the city’s river and canal taxis provide a slow but steady (and scenic) way to get around.

Crime happens but it's rare

Thailand has a low crime rate and is generally considered a safe country. Bangkok suffers from the same type of violent crimes as any big city, but anecdotally, is considered a safe place. Apart from occasional bag snatching and theft, the most dangerous thing in the city is its traffic (Thailand’s roads are some of the deadliest of any country). Solo women travelers and locals I’ve spoken to also report feeling safe in the city.

A particular Bangkok annoyance is scams directed at tourists. These typically involve taxi drivers who refuse to use their meters, or tuk-tuk drivers and/or well-dressed, English-speaking men who appear out of nowhere offering free tours that inevitably lead to dodgy gem shops or tailors. The good news is that most of these situations are easy to spot and relatively low-pressure; if something seems off, simply walk away.

It’s also worth noting that Bangkok’s police don’t have a great reputation. Steer clear of them unless you really need help.

Street food isn’t the only good food

Western chefs and food media have been raving about Bangkok’s street food for more than a decade. And it’s a fun, often delicious way to eat. But if you relegated yourself to street food alone, you’d miss the entire scope of Bangkok’s cuisine.

Supplement those streetside noodles with meals at the charming, decades-old restaurants in the old town – these are the places that get the most praise in the Thai-language media. In Bangkok’s newer districts, such as along Thanon Sukhumvit, consider a Japanese meal – the city is home to one of the largest populations of Japanese people outside of Japan.

If your budget allows, consider a splurge restaurant. While the rest of the world was obsessing over its street food, Bangkok's dining scene went in the opposite direction and today is home to several modern, cutting-edge upscale restaurants.

Sometimes it's too hot to handle

Bangkok is one of the hottest capital cities in the world, with an average mean temperature of 29°C (84°F). This heat is compounded by intense humidity and the urban environment, which reflects and retains heat, meaning the city often feels much, much ( much ) hotter. April is Bangkok's hottest month, with an average daily max temperature of 35°C (96 ° F) and during the “winter” in December and January, temperatures rarely dip below 20°C (68°F).

All of this means you shouldn't try to cover too much ground on foot – an already difficult task given the city’s lack of pedestrian infrastructure. If you do walk, learn the technique of regularly ducking into air-conditioned malls, hotel lobbies and 7-Elevens to cool off.

Likewise, pack light clothing, but remember – Thais are conservative when it concerns showing skin in public and Bangkok is not the beach.

Bangkok is a queer-friendly city

LGBTIQ+ people are made to feel welcome in Bangkok, which is generally considered Asia’s most queer-friendly city. The epicenter of the gay scene is Thanon Silom, especially in and around Soi 4, which is ostensibly Asia’s biggest queer nightlife area.

Thankfully, it looks like this queer-friendly vibe will extend to legislation. In 2023, the Thai parliament passed draft bills on same-sex marriage, which are expected to become laws, making Thailand the first country in Southeast Asia to allow same-sex marriage.

Keep in mind that public displays of affection between people of any gender are frowned upon in Thailand.

Man wearing a backpack looking at a map on a busy street in Bangkok

There are better budget options than Khao San Road

If you want to be based in the world’s most famous backpacker strip – and all that that entails – book a bed or room on Thanon Khao San, generally known as Khao San Road. It’s lively and fun, and provides easy access to the city’s old town.

But having moved slightly upscale in recent decades, Khao San Road no longer represents the best value area to stay in Bangkok. And with loud bars and a boozy vibe, it’s definitely not the most peaceful place to stay.

If you want to have access to the backpacker amenities but don’t want the noise and hassle, consider staying in the streets nearby, such as Thanon Rambutri or Thanon Phra Athit.

Monsoon season brings sudden surprises

During the annual monsoon, from approximately May to October, Bangkok’s streets occasionally turn into rivers. During this time of year, don’t be surprised if you have to camp out on an elevated street corner or in a 7-Eleven until the waters recede.

Malls are part of city life

While shopping malls are a dying breed in much of the west, they’re thriving in Bangkok. The city is home to some of the most over-the-top shopping centers in the world, which in contemporary Bangkok, have a dual function as (conveniently air-conditioned) social centers. Thais gather at the city’s more than 500 shopping centers to chat, eat, take selfies and occasionally make purchases, and so should you.

Tourists spray water guns out of a tuk tuk on Khaosan Road during the Songkran festival

Bangkok essentially shuts down during the Thai New Year

Every year around April, Bangkok grinds to a halt during Thai New Year, known as Songkran or the water festival. The tradition has its origins in the cleansing role of water, but these days it essentially means that Bangkok becomes ground zero to a multi-day, raucous water battle.

Whether you're into it or not, you’ll be splashed with water and/or smeared with baby powder. Don’t even attempt stepping outside your door with your Sunday best on and don’t expect your favorite restaurant, or that museum or monument to be open (shopping centers, inevitably, will be operating). Discover more about Bangkok's festivals and seasonal attractions in our guide to the best time to visit the city .

Weed isn’t exactly legal in Bangkok

In June 2022, marijuana and hemp were removed from the Category 5 narcotics list in Thailand. However, there are still many restrictions and smoking marijuana in public is not legal and is not recommended.

Yes, there's a sex industry, but it's easy to avoid

“One Night in Bangkok” is indeed a reality. But if you steer clear of the main red-light zones at night – namely Thanon Patpong, Soi Nana and Soi Cowboy – it's likely you won’t even witness this side of the city.

Thailand FAM (November 1-10, 2024)

Blog thumbnail

Get ready to embark on a 10-day/9-night FAM trip that will leave you in awe of Thailand’s temples, rich culture, and incredible beaches.

Arrival in Bangkok where you will be welcomed by our representative and transferred to your tranquil hotel situated along the Chao Phraya River – the legendary River of Kings. Standard check-in: 3 PM

Overnight in Bangkok Meals Included | N/A

Breakfast at hotel Full Bangkok City & Temples Include the Grand Palace This tour includes three of the most unusual Buddhist temples in Bangkok: Wat Trimitr with its invaluable Golden Buddha (5 ½ tons of solid gold) – Wat Po, the most extensive temple in Bangkok, with its colossal Reclining Buddha and the Chedis of the Kings. The Grand Palace is one of the most beautiful samples of an ancient Siamese court. It used to be the residence of the Kings of Thailand. Here you will see palaces that were used for different occasions: the Funeral Palace, the Reception Palace, the Throne Hall, the Coronation Hall, the Royal Guest House, and the beautiful Emerald Buddha Temple. Return to the hotel after the program. The rest of the day is at your leisure. Lunch at a local restaurant This long adventure takes us to the waters of the former Bangkok capital Thonburi which in 1972 merged into Bangkok. Situated on the western side of the Chao Phraya River, these waterways remain very much intact since development on this side of the river is much slower and has ensured the capital has retained its title ‘Venice of the East.’ Here we will glide through the klongs in traditional long-tail wooden boats and soak up scenic life along the capital’s waterways. On the way we stop at the National Museum of Royal Barges which is home to elaborate royal vessels used in state processions. We then head back along the Chao Phraya to visit the magnificent Wat Arun, also known as the Temple of Dawn.

Overnight in Bangkok Meals Included | Breakfast

Breakfast at hotel

Half-day Morning Damnoen Saduak Floating Market The real floating market is the one at Damnoen Saduak, around 110 kilometers west of Bangkok. A trip to this Thai phenomenon is like traveling back to the ancient times of the Siam Kingdom, where colorful-clad merchants paddle along the narrow canals. The Floating Market is an ideal place for tourists to see the old-style and traditional way of selling and buying fruits, vegetables, and other things from small boats. Tourists will also be able to see traditional Thai houses and the way locals use boats in their everyday lives. During your visit, there will be lots of activity and bargaining is part of the fun of the sale. The market’s popularity among visitors has grown over the years and outside the traditional means of selling and trading food and drinks, souvenir shops around the market are home to some of the best local handicrafts one can buy. The tour includes a visit to the rural Maeklong Railway Market or Talad Rom Hoop (closing umbrella market).

After the program, you’ll be transferred back to Bangko. The remainder of the afternoon is at your leisure.

This morning you will be transferred to Bangkok Suvarnabhumi Airport for your domestic flight to Chiang Mai (flight not included; suggested times will be provided for you to book).

Upon arrival at Chiang Mai, you will meet with your English-speaking guide, followed by a transfer to the hotel. Standard check-in: 3 PM

Half Day City & Temples incl. Doi Suthep The northern city of Chiang Mai is renowned for its abundant historic and ornate religious shrines and this inspirational tour reveals some of the most famed temples. Our cultural adventure starts at Wat Chiang Man, the oldest of the city’s 300 temples. It was built in 1296 by King Mengrai of the Lanna Kingdom when he decided to make Chiang Mai the capital of his realm. This structure is famous for the Lanna-style chedi supported by rows of elephant-shaped buttresses. We then head to Wat Chedi Luang, the ‘temple of the great stupa’ which dominates the locality; Wat Phra Singh, one of the finest examples of classic Lanna architecture in Northern Thailand; and Wat Sri Suphan, also known as the ‘silver temple’. The silversmiths in the locality decorated the ordination hall with silver, nickel, and aluminum panels and the effect is like a giant jewelry box, particularly at night when floodlights illuminate the temple.

We'll then visit the lively Warorot Market, a haven of retail activity where virtually every product can be bought. This concludes this excellent tour.

The remainder of the afternoon is at your leisure.

Ancient Lanna History

Drive to the south of the city to visit Wat Ton Kwen or Wat Inthrawat, one of the finest examples of classic Lanna architecture in Northern Thailand. Proceed to hang Dong for an incredible gastronomic experience with the local Ruankaew-Yanon family. You will be welcomed into their home to experience a typical day in the life of a Thai person, in a real Thai neighborhood. You will learn to cook traditional home-cooked recipes with authentic Northern Thai flavors that are different from standard dishes offered in commercial cooking classes. Enjoy a delicious home-cooked meal which helped create with the whole family.

Highlights include seeing a large rock embedded with plant fossils, walking in expansive fields with varieties of grass used as cattle fodder, exploring natural forests of Burmese Rosewood, learning how to milk cows, feeding calves and taking in views of the surrounding mountains. Visitors can also enjoy a cowboy show, and visit a small petting zoo with sheep, goats, camels and more.

Ambassador Cruise Line launches agent incentive to win a place on Autumn Fjordland Fam Trip

' src=

Following the announcement in April confirming that 60 agent partners will be offered the opportunity to enjoy the ‘warmest welcome at sea’ on three Ambassador Cruise Line Fam Trip sailings later this year, the no-fly cruise line has today announced that agents can win one of eight places on the 7-night Autumn Fjordland sailing on Ambience departing 26 September 2024.

The Autumn Fjordland sailing offers an exciting itinerary with six ports of call made throughout Norway’s North Sea coastline. The lucky winners can enjoy the colourful city of Bergen, the fjord-side town of Flam, discover the rugged footpaths of Eidfjord, and experience the charm of Stavanger. Additionally, agent partners can take advantage of the ship’s facilities and explore all that’s on offer onboard an Ambassador sailing. From experiencing the ship’s exceptional service, to getting a taste of Ambassador’s outstanding cuisine and discovering the amazing entertainment on board, this Fam Trip will put Ambassador’s affordable-quality offering on full display.

To be in with a chance of winning a place on the Fam Trip, agents should simply tell the Ambassador trade team what they would do to encourage customers to book a 2025/26 sailing by sending an email to [email protected], the more creative or inventive the submission, the better chance the agent will have of winning.

The competition will run from Friday 7 June to Monday 17 June 2024, with the winners announced on Friday 21 June 2024.

Karen Cameron, Divisional Sales Manager – North at Ambassador Cruise Line, said:  “ We appreciate all that our agent partners do for us, therefore we’re delighted to be hosting some of our valued trade colleagues onboard Ambience to enjoy the ‘warmest welcome at sea’ as a thank you for their ongoing support.

“ We know there is nothing like seeing and experiencing a product first-hand, and the team is really looking forward to showcasing our brilliant, affordable-quality offering during this exciting sailing to Norway’s stunning fjordlands. Goodluck to all who enter, we truly hope those lucky winners enjoy themselves at sea. ”

Agents have been invited to join three Ambassador sailings from July through September 2024. Two itineraries onboard Ambience will be departing from London Tilbury – the 8-night Majestic Fjordland on 14 July  and the 7-night Autumn Fjordland on 26 September – with a third sailing, the 8-night River Seine Experience & Antwerp cruise on 19 October, welcoming agents onboard in Port of Tyne: the first time that Ambassador will host a Fam Trip from one of its regional departure ports.
