Mario Golf: Toadstool Tour

Mario Golf

Mario Golf: Toadstool Tour is a Nintendo GameCube game and the third installment of the Mario Golf series . It was originally released in 2003 in North America and Japan and then in 2004 in Europe and Australia. About a year after its initial release, Mario Golf: Toadstool Tour was re-released as a Player's Choice title.

The noticeable features are special elements such as Fast Fairways (where the ball rolls much farther than on a normal fairway), Warp Pipes , (when a ball is shot into a Warp Pipe, it will come out of the corresponding same-colored pipe) and Chain Chomps (when a ball is hit and it lands near them, the Chain Chomp will chase after the ball, causing an O.B. shot).

Opening [ ]

The game's opening starts with Mario and Luigi looking at a shiny trophy and commenting on how nice it looks. Peach and Daisy call on them saying it's tee time on the planned golf course. As the four friends are shown making excellent tee shots, Wario and Waluigi are shown from behind, extremely jealous of how well Mario, Luigi, Peach, and Daisy do. The two hear a noise and turn around to see Yoshi and Koopa Troopa together to start their round of golf. Wario and Waluigi clench their golf clubs while laughing, and prepare to join them. They all take turns hitting their golf balls, and Yoshi hits near a Chain Chomp . When he tries to get it back, the Chain Chomp wakes up and barks at Yoshi, scaring him and making him fall over. Wario attempts to hit the ball out of the bunker, but just manages to fling sand into Waluigi's face. Minutes later, Waluigi attempts to putt the ball into the hole, but fails miserably after a few tries - resulting in Yoshi and Koopa Troopa falling asleep.

Meanwhile, Donkey Kong and Diddy Kong walk past the sleeping Yoshi and Koopa Troopa; Wario and Waluigi attempt to challenge them next. After Donkey Kong shows his golf prowess to Diddy, Wario and Waluigi, Wario, despite his terrible swing, attempts to hit the ball a long way, until it goes out of sight into the forest. Wario and Waluigi start celebrating until they hear a loud roar. The ball suddenly flies back and lands in front of Wario. The two look up and see Bowser coming out of the forest completely enraged because he has a black eye from the golf ball. Bowser gives chase after Wario and Waluigi in his Koopa Clown Car and starts firing Bob-ombs at the two as they run around Lakitu Valley past Birdo and Boo , who were playing a game of golf on their own. Fortunately for Wario and Waluigi, they find a yellow Warp Pipe that is too small for Bowser and his Koopa Clown Car to fit through. Wario and Waluigi come out the other side of the pipe and stop to catch their breath; however, Bowser and the Koopa Clown Car appear right above them seconds later. Bowser takes out another Bob-omb threatening to drop it, resulting in Wario and Waluigi screaming in fear for their lives.

Meanwhile, Mario is preparing to take a shot on that same course with Luigi, Peach, and Daisy observing from behind. As Wario and Waluigi still try frantically to escape from Bowser's looming threat by going through an enormous metal door, Mario hits his ball with his golf club. Wario and Waluigi manage to open the door and continue their escape attempt. But as they did so, Mario's ball hits Wario and Waluigi, giving them black eyes as well, and knocks the Bob-omb off Bowser's hand. This ultimately results in an explosion claiming Wario, Waluigi, and Bowser as the victims. Mario, Luigi, Peach, and Daisy witnessed it from afar, completely baffled as to what caused the blast that came out of nowhere.

Gameplay [ ]

The game differs greatly from that of the previous game in both controls and visuals. The game uses 3D renders for the designs of characters and courses, changing the camera view to be able to view much more of each hole in detail. Pressing X or Y allows the player to view an overview of the hole and allows them to study the topography of the whole of it or just the green, in order to adjust their shot, and can look around using C. The green also now displays moving topographic lines that follow down its path, increasing in speed the more the green slopes. A new control system has also been added, with a manual and automatic swing. The automatic swing is used by pressing A to set the power for the shot and then letting the game decide where the sweet spot marker ends up. A manual swing involves pressing B when choosing power, then pressing either A or B to set the sweet spot impact marker. This allows the use of a new feature, spin, to be used on shots. Backspin, topspin, super backspin or super topspin can be used, affecting the ball's line of movement on the ground. Topspin sends the ball rolling forward while backspin causes the ball to roll back; these spins make the ball roll a shorter distance than their super versions. Different characters' spin will be more powerful with higher spin levels. The ability to change where the ball is hit is also present from the two previous games, allowing different types of shots to be taken. Approach shots, used when players approach the pin, appear, as well as the limited number of power shots. Power shots have longer drives than normal shots, and only six can be used at a time. If a player does a perfect power shot (meaning they have aligned the first bar at the far left and perfectly aligned the second bar), it is not used up.

Playable Characters [ ]

  • Donkey Kong

Unlockable Characters [ ]

  • Petey Piranha

In-game cameos [ ]

  • Pikmin flower patch - Once you spot a flower patch, try to shoot your ball into it. Once you do, you'll see multiple different Pikmin flying in the air after the impact of the golf ball.

Ring Attack Missions [ ]

"target bullseye tour" version [ ].

On July 28, 2003, Nintendo of America released Mario Golf: Toadstool Tour (Target Bullseye Tour Included -- Exclusive Version) through Target stores. This version allowed players to play the Bullseye Tour in the Special Tournament mode. Codes issued from this version of the game could be submitted through the official website. Nintendo prizes were mailed out to the winners. The promotion ended on August 31, 2003. [2]

  • This game's scoreboard features many characters from other Mario games, including Goombario and Hammer Bro . Possibly coincidentally, one of the referenced characters has actually never been seen since the Super Mario Adventures comic, where he was a minor hero.
  • Professional golfer Gary McCord recommended the game in his book Golf for Dummies , notably referring to Mario as "the mustachioed plumber from Donkey Kong ".
  • This was one of the last games Nintendo published to have the "Official Nintendo Seal of Quality" label on the box and the disc, as Nintendo changed the label in late-2003 to read "Official Nintendo Seal". A Player's Choice box was released after 2003; however, on this version, the " Official Nintendo Seal " appears on the back only, while the "Official Nintendo Seal of Quality" appears on the front and the disc.

Description official descriptions

Mario and the team, including Peach, Donkey Kong, Yoshi, Luigi and Wario, return for another round of golf.

Play through courses either with real life situations (your typical bunker or water hazard) to fantasy 'Mario World' settings, such as a Chain Chomp awaiting your ball in the sand traps and using warp pipes to get further towards the hole quickly and easily.

Up to 4 players can play at any one time in Tournament and Match Play modes, with the obvious goal being the one who wins the tournament taking the least amount of shots to do so.

Not very good

The Good The graphics, sound, and atmosphere of the game are all here in traditional mario fashion. I enjoy the mario themed sports games as most are lighthearted, low impact fun for both sports fans and non sports fans alike.

The controls are quite simple, and the game can easily be learned without reading the manual at all. By the time I played the first 9 holes I knew exactly what I was doing.

There are also a variety of modes of play, such as stroke play, gathering coins (which involves hitting the ball into areas that have a large amount of coins), and playing with a randomly selected limited number of clubs, to timed play where you must play fast and beat the timer. Up to four people can play, and the more you have the more fun the whole thing can be.

The Bad Unfortunately, this game fails to deliver. It just wasn't very fun for me to play. I have played other golf games such as Outlaw Golf and Links for the PC, so perhaps I have higher expectations than most.

For one, the camera angles are absolutely terrible. More time is spent on the stationary character than the ball itself. Often you'll hit the ball and wonder where it went while the camera focuses on mario, or whoever you picked.

There are a wide variety of characters to choose from, all with different tendencies in their swing. Some characters shoot short but straight, while others may have a lot of power but less control, causing the ball to splice. The problem is however, when you play characters that seem to be opposites, they tend to perform the same. For example, I can take a straight shooting character, drive the ball at maximum power without making any adjustments prior to the drive, and then do the same for a character with less control and the balls will typically end up very very close to one another.

Putting/driving is way too easy. I got pars and birdies my first time ever playing the game. There is a feature to where after you select the power level of your drive, the computer will automatically hit the ball perfectly straight if you let it. Boo.

Wind, which is a major factor in golf and many golf games has almost negligible effect here. 20mph crosswind? No problem, and almost no difference from 0 mph wind even while using a wedge at full power.

The ball doesn't roll enough. The physics are unrealistic. When the ball hits the ground (even with a low trajectory high speed shot) it slows down as if it hit sand or an extremely wet surface. If it's raining in the game, it's even worse as I've used a putter on the green for a long range birdie and even at full power I couldn't get within 10 feet of the hole because it was stopped short.

Commentary is almost non-existent, except for a voice (not even a mario character's voice as the commentator) that says 'nice shot!' or 'nice on' just about everytime you hit the ball or make it to the green.

The game often feels static and lonely. I can't put my finger on it but unlike other mario sports games that I've played, I'm just not enchanted by this one. The Bottom Line I understand that this game was designed to be a mario game first, and a golf game second, but if you ask me it fails to deliver on either point.

If one were a mario fan, AND had never ever played any other golf game in the past, this could be a good pick. Otherwise, I'd suggest Outlaw Golf, or Hot Shots golf over this one.

Video golf at it's almost greatest

The Good Almost everything.

Controls - The controls are well thought out, and easy to use. The standard controls are excellent (don't remember if you can change them), but beware, almost every button has a use. It's also great that there's two different methods of hitting the ball. One is easy, the other builds on the easy method (with more button presses obviously) and allows for more control. Spin, top or back, is one of those things you only get with 'manual' swing mode.

Courses - The courses are varied and interesting. There's (I think) something like 8 courses. They're all different from each other. The backgrounds of the courses are terrific. For example, one of the courses is all in the tops of giant trees. It's pretty cool. The holes range in par from 3 to 5, and they are scored pretty well. There hasn't been a single hole where I didn't think I could make par. Some are more challenging then others, but that's to be expected. And welcomed.

Characters - There are a lot of characters. Twice what you can see, as each character has a 'Star' mode, which increases distance (usually) at the expense of another stat. Each character has a max distance number (Waluigi for example, can drive 206 yards or something), and 3 (4?) other stats, plus an approximation of the path the ball follows off the tee (slice, hook, etc) as a directional arrow. There's also some unlock-able characters which you earn as you do certain things.

Modes - There's actually a surprising number of play modes. I figured, 'Hey, it's golf'. Well, it is, and it's lots of golf. You can play normal 'Stroke' play, where the player with the fewest strokes at the end wins. You can play another mode, where it only matters if you win the hole. You can play doubles, with or against a friend or the computer. You get the idea. Pretty high replay value with all the modes. 4 players at a time, did I mention that?

Graphics - The graphics are good (especially in progressive mode). Everything looks very nice. Nothing that'll make you go 'Holy crap, it looks like a movie', but they're very enjoyable. The Bad There's not much I didn't like about this game. The only real thing that's semi-annoying is the sound. The sound effects are good, but the characters have a limited number of sounds. Each character seems to only have one sound per action. For example, Mario makes the same noise every time he hits the ball. Plus the announcer (such as it is) only says a few things, and they get annoying real quick. Other than that there's not much wrong with this game. The Bottom Line It's golf. It's very fun, and well done, but at the end, it's still golf. Buy this game. Unless you hate golf.

Mario Golf: Toadstool Tour

Mario Golf: Toadstool Tour

Video: mario golf: toadstool tour.

It's the favoured downtime recreation of professional footballers, company executives - and now, plumbers, princesses, dinosaurs and apes. In Mario Golf: Toadstool Tour, the Nintendo GameCube follow-up to the Nintendo 64's much-loved Mario Golf 64, the golfing green plays host to some of its most bizarre and brilliant moments ever.

All the usual suspects - Mario, Luigi, Peach, Donkey Kong, Wario and more - have pulled on their golfing strides (with some difficulty in Wario's case, and for Donkey Kong read 'golfing tie') to guide that dimpled white ball into the little hole. The Toadstool Tour championship, with its myriad hazard-laden courses, rewards only the most skilled clubber with anything other than grass-stamping frustration. With your help, your chosen character hoist the winning cup above their grinning head.

Step out onto the Mario Golf: Toadstool Tour's wide range of golfing greens and you'll view beauty to make your eyes salivate. The 'real-world' courses are all lush green grass, hillocks and water hazards, and lustrous forest perimeters - plus the odd Nintendo twist on famous monuments like Mt Rushmore, where the USA's respected forebears are replaced with the mischievous smirks of Yoshi and Luigi.

But Toadstool Tour also features brand new Mushroom Kingdom-themed greens - decorated with those familiar spotted mushrooms, bubbled trees, Piranha Plant and Chain Chomp hazards, and even warp pipes that transport the ball from one section of the green to another. In such rule-twisting environments, potential losers can become sudden first-placers at the drop of a hat. But your talent with Mario Golf: Toadstool Tour's new ball-whacking system will also play a big part in whether you'll be standing on the winner's podium. The power bar system returns - press the A Button to stop a roving power bar and determine shot strength - but now there are two modes of swing. Novice players can have everything but strength controlled automatically - experienced players can use fast combinations of the A and B Buttons to add topspin, backspin, slice and more. With practice, this superb new system allows expert players to send the ball rocketing skyward with astonishing power, or diving towards earth as though ricocheting off an invisible ceiling.

Add to this a golf bag-full of differently-abled clubs and putters, additional sidespin opportunities, and the option of executing a special effects-fuelled Power Shot, and in Mario Golf: Toadstool Tour you're playing with a satisfyingly deep control system that can rescue you from even the nastiest situations. Mario Golf newcomers needn't be stuck with bogey after bogey, though. A guide arrow shows you the path of the ball (albeit in a dream world where wind, hills, obstacles and ball bounce don't exist - we don't want to make it too easy for you), and handy grids are pasted onto the green to indicate those dangerous bumps, dips and curves. Plus, the camera's totally at your beck and call - so pull up to see the path to the hole from a cloud's perspective, or scoot into the distance to check the terrain. Very handy.

As you work your way through the increasingly tough greens - encountering tricky turns, gaping chasms, and many an infuriating water hazard - you'll be treated to a carnival of first-class animation. Mario and co. practically drip character as they drag the club back, connect with the ball to an explosion of pretty sparks (and 'NICE SHOT!' if your button presses are spot on), and celebrate or sulk with every birdie, bogey or hole-in-one. Princess Peach looks better than ever, fresh from her Super Mario Sunshine vacation and in her skimpiest miniskirt yet, and big DK's ham-fisted grasp of the relatively tiny club is as hilarious as ever.

Mario Golf: Toadstool Tour truly comes alive when two, three or four players unite for a swinging time - and not least because with a stab of the D-Pad, your character can yell an "encouraging" comment at just the right time to scupper an opponent's swing. Watch your rival rant - and count yourself lucky that real golf clubs aren't involved, or you can bet you'd have one wrapped around your neck. And as if all that wasn't enough - plug into your copy of Mario Golf Advance Tour for Game Boy Advance, using the Nintendo GameCube Game Boy Advance Cable, and you can transfer characters to and from the two versions.

Mario Golf: Toadstool Tour takes two great things - the Mario universe, and golf - and wraps them together in such a flawlessly enjoyable way that's it difficult to imagine they were ever separate. Plus, you don't need to don a pair of embarrassing checked trousers to play, either. Although, obviously, you can if you want...

10 most interesting places in Tver Region (PHOTOS)

mario golf toadstool tour mario

1. Catherine the Great's ‘Travel Palace’ in Tver

mario golf toadstool tour mario

The city was founded on the Volga River in 1135. It’s 12 years older than Moscow and even competed to become the capital of Ancient Russia. Today, it is a major regional center with a population of around 414,000 people.

Travelers from one capital to the other would often stop in Tver. Empress Catherine II even had a travel palace built in Tver so as to have somewhere to rest along the way. Now, it houses the Tver Regional Art Gallery. It includes artwork collections owned by Tver governors from country estates in the Tver Governorate that were nationalized after the Bolshevik Revolution. They contain works by Alexey Venetsianov, Konstantin Korovin, Arkady Plastov, Valentin Serov, Mikhail Vrubel and other famous artists.

2. Rzhev Memorial

mario golf toadstool tour mario

The town of Rzhev is located 120 km from Tver. From October 1941 to March 1943, some of the bloodiest battles of World War II, including the ‘Battle of Rzhev’, took place there (you can read more about the battle here ). Soviet troops lost more than 1.3 million men, including wounded, missing in action and taken prisoner.

A memorial to the soldiers who fell in the battle was inaugurated in Rzhev in June 2020. At the center of the composition is a 25-meter bronze statue of a Soviet soldier whose trench coat "morphs" into a flock of cranes. The reference is to one of the most popular and poignant songs about the war titled: 'Zhuravli' ('Cranes'). It was composed by Yan Frenkel to lyrics by Rasul Gamzatov.

3. Lake Seliger

mario golf toadstool tour mario

Lovers of outdoor recreational activities should visit the shores of Seliger at least once in their life! This huge (260 sq. km) lake of glacial origin is home to about 30 species of fish. Hence, fishermen go there at all times of year and fish from boats, from the shore and, in winter, through ice-holes.

The winding shoreline of the lake has a multitude of different hotels and campsites (as well as glamping sites), so anyone can stay there according to their preferences. And you can jump straight into the lake from the banya (bathhouse)!

One of Seliger's landmarks is the charming town of Ostashkov, the largest on its shores.. Its key attractions include a Soviet local history museum, which is housed in a former church.

You can also take a ride on a retro train along the Seliger - Ostashkov - Bologoye route.

4. Nilov Monastery (St. Nilus Stolobensky Monastery)

mario golf toadstool tour mario

One of the main attractions in Tver Region is the Nilov Monastery, founded in the 16th century. This functioning monastery is also situated on the picturesque shores of Lake Seliger. In Soviet times, it housed a colony for young offenders, a prisoner-of-war camp, a hospital and a tourist hostel…

According to legend, a hermit monk named Nil, famous for his diligent prayer, settled on the island of Stolobny on the lake. It was said that no calamities or robbers could force him off the island. After he died, other monks began to go to where his cell had stood and, eventually, they founded a monastery there. Before the Bolshevik Revolution, it was one of the most revered monasteries: Thousands of pilgrims used to visit it to worship the relics of the Venerable Nil. As part of the project ‘Russia: 85 Adventures’, we filmed a video at the monastery – you can watch it here .

mario golf toadstool tour mario

If, in Torzhok, you've time to eat, Pozharsky's is the place to know. Their cutlets, fried, are such a treat, Then after lunch you'll lightly go!

So wrote Alexander Pushkin, who frequently traveled from St. Petersburg to Moscow to see his friend Sergei Sobolevsky. Thanks to Russia's most outstanding poet, ‘Pozharsky cutlets’ – patties of ground chicken coated in white bread croutons – became the town's most famous speciality. And they remain its calling card to this day.

mario golf toadstool tour mario

But, the town is famous for more than just gastronomy. The once major trading center has, today, evolved into a charming provincial town. Things to see include the picturesque scenery along the banks of the River Tvertsa, the Saints Boris and Gleb Monastery, which is virtually the oldest monastery of Ancient Russia (believed to have been founded in 1038), and the unique, wooden 17th-century Old Church of the Ascension.

6. The flooded bell tower of Kalyazin

mario golf toadstool tour mario

One of the region's most famous sights is the flooded bell tower of Kalyazin. The 74-meter tower protrudes out of the water not far from the shores of a reservoir. Tourists who take pictures of it are sometimes oblivious of the fact that the ruins of a once-flourishing monastery lie hidden under the water.

Most of the Makaryev Monastery of the Holy Trinity was demolished in 1940, ending up in the flood zone of the Uglich hydroelectric power station on the Volga River and the Uglich Reservoir. What remains now as a reminder of the monastery are the bell tower, which was recently restored and re-whitewashed and also a set of frescoes miraculously rescued from the monastery. You can read more about them here .

7. The source of the Volga

mario golf toadstool tour mario

It's hard to believe that this spring and stream in the Valdai Heights are the place where one of the world's biggest rivers (and the biggest in Europe) rises. Next to the spring stand a chapel and a footbridge with a plaque – an ideal spot for a souvenir selfie!

In Ancient Rus’, the River Volga was always held in special esteem – it was described as “Mother Volga”, a multitude of towns were built along it and it provided food for a large number of Russian regions and continues to do so to this day. This is why pilgrimages have been made to its source for several centuries now. Back in the 17th century, a monastery stood there, but it burnt down and was never restored. A new one was, however, built in 1912 – the Olginsky Convent.

8. Shirkov Pogost

mario golf toadstool tour mario

This spot on the shores of Lake Vselug (today part of the Volga River) is dubbed the "Kizhi of the Tver Region". Like the famous Kizhi on Lake Onega , Shirkov Pogost is of interest because of its multi-tiered wooden church – in this case, the church of John the Baptist, a masterpiece of Russian wooden architecture, which was built in 1697.

According to one legend, the Pogost was named in honor of the Shirkov brothers, merchants who had the church built. They were taking two icons of John the Baptist from Novgorod to Moscow. On this spot, they laid down the sacred images and decided to rest, but they could not pick them up again – and, so, decided to build a church there without using a single nail!

9. Vyshny Volochyok

mario golf toadstool tour mario

The town got its name from the word ‘volok’ (‘portage’) – in other words, various watercraft were carried across a section of dry land between two bodies of water there. True enough, Vyshny Volochyok was on the watershed of the basins of the Baltic (Tsna River) and the Caspian (Tvertsa River, a tributary of the Volga). Under Peter I, the first artificial canal in Russia was built between the two rivers.

Vyshny Volochyok was always an important staging post on the route from Moscow (and Central Russia) to St. Petersburg. Because of its convenient location, there were many factories and production plants there, from garment factories to glass and woodwork facilities. Volochyok is also famous for the manufacture of ‘valenki’ (‘felt boots’) and it even has a museum devoted to this footwear and to the art of wool hand felting.

A host of old factory buildings, as well as houses that once belonged to affluent merchants in a great variety of styles, have survived in the town. A roadside imperial palace was also built there, which, today, houses a school.

10. Konakovo

mario golf toadstool tour mario

Until 1929, the village was called Kuznetsovo, after which it was renamed in honor of Porfiry Konakov, a participant in the 1905 Russian Revolution. The area is famous for its china. The Konakovo Pottery Factory was founded as early as 1809 and is one of the oldest in Russia. It is no longer in operation, but local craftspeople are using the legacy of its artistic workshop to revive production today. Items can be bought as a souvenir in Tver Region.

But, today's tourists know the location more as a fashionable riviera. Konakovo and nearby Zavidovo are popular places for recreational activities and water sports. People go sailing, wakesurfing and wakeboarding and there are a multitude of hotels and glamping sites for holiday stays. And the close proximity to the M11 motorway makes the location even more attractive (particularly to Muscovites, who can get there in just over an hour!).
