A Tex-Mex tradition since 1941, this family-owned restaurant in Market Square is not to be missed. Sure, tourists flock here, but local families and businesspeople love it, too. Strolling mariachis pluck big guitars and pour their hearts out singing traditional Mexican ballads—even at breakfast. (The place is open 24/7). At the front of the restaurant, a traditional panederia showcases a variety of Mexican pastries and candies; just beyond the bakery are three dining rooms—check out the one in the back for its mural of San Antonio notables and a Selena shrine. Start with a bowl of hot queso and crispy tortilla chips, then move on to traditional Tex-Mex fare like enchiladas verdes and chile rellenos . If you can’t decide what to order, go with a botanas platter, a generous sampler of antojitos (appetizers).
