Titanic Belfast: History, The Best Tour + Guide

A visit to Titanic Belfast is high on the list for most visitors when exploring the capital of Northern Ireland.

Located right on the slipways where RMS Titanic was designed, built and launched, the enigmatic Titanic Museum tells the now-infamous story incredibly well.

Visitors can expect exhibits, replica staterooms, photos, documents and you’ll see, hear and even SMELL the shipbuilding process during your tour!

Discover everything from how much Titanic Belfast tickets cost to what to expect from your visit below!

Some quick need-to-knows about Titanic Belfast

map of the titanic belfast

Although a visit to the Titanic Museum is fairly straightforward, there are a few need-to-knows that’ll make your visit that bit more enjoyable.

1. Location

Titanic Belfast is in the heart of Belfast’s Titanic Quarter where it overlooks the River Lagan. It’s a 25-minute walk from both the Belfast Cathedral Quarter and St George’s Market and a 35-minute walk from Ormeau Park .

2. How long a visit takes

You’ll want to allow between 1½ – 2½ hours for the self-guided Titanic Experience while the guided Discovery Tour lasts 1-hour.

3. Admission

An adult ticket for the Titanic Experience costs around €29.60/£24.90 while an adult ticket for the Discovery Tour costs around £12.60/€15. There are other tour options that I’ll explain below.

4. Getting there

You can take the G2 Glider to and from the Titanic Quarter from the city centre. It runs every 12 – 15 minutes.

The story behind the Titanic Museum

Titanic Experience

Photos by Chris Hill via Tourism Ireland

The Titanic is one of the most famous ships ever launched.

Designed, built and launched by Belfast’s leading shipbuilders, Harland and Wolff , it is a fascinating story that led to the epic blockbuster movie of the same name.

Sadly, the luxury liner is not remembered as being the largest ship afloat at that time, but for the disaster that unfolded during her maiden voyage

Belfast circa 1900

In the early 20th century, Belfast was buzzing with industry, particularly shipbuilding, rope-making and linen linen production (it mainly took place in the city’s Cathedral Quarter ).

Around 15,000 Belfast residents were employed by the leading shipyard, Harland and Wolff, under the ambitious Chairman, Lord Pirrie.

Commissioned by White Star Line as a new luxury liner for their fast Transatlantic fleet, the RMS Titanic was the largest man-made moveable object in the world.

It had the latest refinements in luxury including a heated swimming pool, escalators, hot and cold water in each stateroom and a glittering ballroom.

A Titanic disaster

As the ship sailed out on its maiden voyage, a crew of engineers and fitters from Belfast were onboard to complete any last-minute details.

Steaming through the icy waters of Newfoundland Canada at an impressive 20 knots per hour, the Titanic struck an iceberg.

It pierced the hull and the “unsinkable” liner sank to a watery grave taking more than 1500 crew and passengers with it.

The different Titanic tours

So, there are a couple of different tours of the Titanic Museum that you can head off on, depending on what way you want to explore it.

Below, you’ll find info on a guided and a self-guided tour of the Titanic Centre (note: if you make a booking through a link below we  may  make a small commission which we very much appreciate).

1. Titanic Experience (self-guided)

Admission to the Titanic Experience Tour includes a self-guided tour through a series of galleries.

Surround yourself with the sights, sounds and smells of booming Belfast shipyards as you discover the social history of the people and city of Belfast.

Embrace the story of the Titanic, from plans to launch and subsequent sinking. A drama and a tragedy in this epic Titanic Experience!

2. The Discovery Tour (guided)

Follow your informative guide via a personal headset on this 1.7 mile/2.8km Discovery Tour around the historic slipways and huge Titanic Belfast building.

Along the way, learn about maritime metaphors hidden in the attraction and discover the symbolic importance of this contemporary design.

See the Drawing Offices where Thomas Andrews and his colleagues designed the Titanic. Follow the stages of construction of these Olympic class behemoths, culminating in their grand launch.

3. The White Star Premium Pass

The White Star Premium Pass offers three experiences for one price:

  • The Titanic Experience
  • SS Nomadic visit
  • The guided Discovery Tour

Other things to see around the Titanic Quarter

After you’ve finished working your way around the Titanic Exhibition, there’s still plenty to see and do in the surrounding area.

Below, you’ll find info on everything from the building itself (it’s unique to say the least!) to the SS Nomadic and more.

1. The building itself

the titanic building

The landmark building housing the main Titanic Belfast attraction is a work of art in itself. It was designed by Todd Architects and took three years to complete at a cost of £77 million.

The four 38m-high points represent the pointed hulls on the original ship and stand the same height as the original ship.

The 5-story glass atrium has views of the docks and city. It is covered in aluminum shards which were specially designed to shimmer.

2. The SS Nomadic

SS Nomadic

Moored on the waterfront, the SS Nomadic was the tender to the RMS Titanic and is the only surviving White Star Line vessel in existence.

Admission is included in your Titanic Experience ticket.

Restored to its 1911 appearance, it has 4 decks and is a floating museum of interactive exhibits and information about life aboard the RMS Titanic.

3. The slipways

the titanic slipway

See the actual slipways down which the RMS Titanic and many other world-famous vessels have launched.

Walk the replica white stone Promenade Deck and sit on benches arranged as they would have been on Titanic’s deck.

See the positioning of the funnels and lifeboats. It’s a historic place to pause a moment and reflect in the many famous ships that have started their life on this very spot.

Things to do nearby

the best things to do in Belfast Ireland

One of the beauties of a visit to the Titanic Museum in Belfast is that it’s a stone’s throw away from many of the best places to visit in Belfast .

Below, you’ll find everything from walks and food to St Anne’s Cathedral , lively pubs and much, much more.

  • Samson and Goliath cranes (3-minute walk):  Belfast’s most famous landmark
  • St Anne’s Cathedral (25-minute walk): Located on Donegall Street, the beautiful building dates back to 1899
  • Key attractions (20-minutes+): Black Cab Tours , Crumlin Road Gaol and Cave Hill

Hello! I love your blog and use it for my Ireland trips' research and have passed the name along to friends. I will be going to Belfast next week and in looking into the Titanic, there is also a third option - the White Star Premium Pass. Do you have any insight into that ticket - value and duration? Interestingly it only starts bookings at noon, while the regular tour is 9am. I have read the museum is very crowded and was hoping to attend first thing, not sure if I should book this or not.

Thanks Sharon! I hadn't heard about the White Star Premium Pass until today. I can't really tell the difference aside from the £10 you get to spend in the cafe, but I may well be wrong! Sorry I couldn't be of more help!

During the tour, you’ll also see West Belfast’s celebrated Peace Wall, the political murals of the Shankhill and Falls roads, and the ultramodern developments of the regenerated docks area, crowned by the glittering, breathtaking Titanic Quarter. After a fascinating morning and the opportunity for lunch (payable locally), you’ll visit the Titanic Belfast, a wonderful visitor centre set on the site where RMS Titanic was constructed a century ago. Developed as much as a tribute to the days of shipbuilding in the city as well as in commemoration of the ill-fated liner that met her untimely end on her maiden voyage in 1912, the Titanic Belfast is a dramatic, innovative and exciting presentation of the real story of the famous ship. It’s housed in nine fascinating galleries in one of the most eye-catching buildings to have been built in the UK for years. Through the use of audiovisual presentation, life-size reconstructions, interactive features and even a ‘Shipyard Ride’, the ship’s conception, construction, tragic sinking and its aftermath, as well as its rediscovery in 1985, are brought vividly to life, and you’ll leave the exhibition with a real sense of the enormity as well as the human cost of one of the 20th century’s most fateful episodes. Enjoy the remainder of the day and evening at leisure, perhaps spent soaking up the atmosphere in one of the many traditional pubs in the city centre.
  • Day 3 Arrow up click to collapse day Arrow Up - Click to expand day Today you're free to enjoy the delights of Belfast under your own steam, although many will take the opportunity to join our optional excursion to the breathtakingly scenic Antrim Coast, where the Nine Glens lead to the sea and to the world-famous Giant's Causeway. This astonishing collection of closely-packed basalt columns, and acting as stepping-stones into the Atlantic from beneath the wild, windswept cliffs, is a remarkable sight. In fact formed 60-million years ago by a volcanic explosion, the stories of the Causeway's origin - it's said to have been built by the Irish hero and giant Finn MacCool so that he could cross to Scotland and do battle with a rival Scottish giant – are much more interesting to non-geologists. Although there is typically a minibus to take visitors to the Causeway from the visitor centre (payable locally), the energetic can walk the mile or so along the cliff path to be rewarded with some breathtaking views. Your journey back to the hotel takes you along the Causeway Coastal Road, past more spectacular views. Highlights of the wonderfully scenic drive will include bustling Ballycastle at the entrance to the two northernmost glens - Glentaisie and Glenshesk, Carnlough with its picturesque harbour and a drive through the colour-washed village of Glenarm and stunning Glenariff – the Queen of the Glens. This evening you're once again free to enjoy Belfast's lively nightlife and wide range of restaurants.

titanic hotel tour

The day trip from Dublin to Belfast also brings visitors face to face with sites renowned worldwide for their unique beauty and provides a glimpse of the stunning scenery offered throughout our island.

One of the most popular stops on our Day tour to Northern Ireland from Dublin is also the most visited natural site in the north of the island, Giant’s Causeway . Volcanic activity tens of millions of years ago produced a unique field of flat-topped and ruggedly symmetrical stones lying between craggy peaks and the roiling sea. UNESCO has ranked Giant’s Causeway among its world heritage sites and many consider it one of the eight natural wonders of the world.

From unique stones to stunningly vibrant shrubs, the tour takes visitors next to Dark Hedges. These centuries-old hedges, planted by the House of Stuart to line a road leading up to Gracehill House, originally served to remind visitors of the family owners of that mansion. Over the years, they have extended their branches across the road to make a unique and almost haunting visage of dynamic plantlife.  No one comes through Ballymoney without snapping a picture of this world-renowned natural phenomenon.

This tour also includes the option to explore Belfast’s famous peace wall, brave the crossing of the  Carrick-A-Rede rope bridge , and other exciting sights on this award winning day trip to Northern Ireland and Belfast from Dublin.

  • Allyson Mucha ★★★★★ 3 weeks ago Wild rover tours was amazing! I loved the black cab tour, I highly recommend it. The sights are all beautiful. Could have used another whole day in Galway. My guides each day Rory and Dave were truly exceptional. And I didn’t get bus sick so our drivers must have been amazing
  • Jenna Doherty ★★★★★ 2 weeks ago My hotel recommended Wild Rover Tours and the company did not disappoint! 5 stars from start to finish. My tour visited the Cliffs of Moher, Ennis and Bunratty Castle and Folk Park. We had plenty of time to explore and learn about the history of each area, plus take all the photos we wanted. Tom (the guide) and Billy (the driver) were fantastic, and provided a great mix of stories, anecdotes and Irish … More music to listen to while enjoying the views of the countryside. I would definitely book Wild Rover Tours again.
  • Ryan Mccarthy ★★★★★ 3 weeks ago This was such a great opportunity to see the Irish countryside and Northern Ireland after flying into Dublin! Our tour leads David and Brian were amazing and David’s narration throughout much of the ride was fantastic. He gave so much background and quality insights into history, the good and the not as good. He even sang Irish songs for us (and was pretty good!)! We loved the Titanic museum tour, … More lots of background and got to see how many people with my surname were on the ship (4 - 2 didn’t make it). The Giants Causeway hike was beautiful as well. It’s a lot of riding time on the bus but well worth it, at a good price! Highly recommend!
  • Jehan ★★★★★ a month ago I did the Dublin to Belfast Tour with Dave as a tour guide and Sergio as our driver - they were fabulous. It was an excellent day of sights and great stories by Dave. When we got to Belfast we had the choice of the Titanic museum or a Black cab tour - I chose the black cab tour and if you are into history, it is well worth it. As a solo traveller (with not a lot of days in Ireland) it was a great way … More to meet new people and explore more of Ireland.
  • Crystal Olson ★★★★★ a month ago I had a wonderful time on the Giant’s Causeway and Belfast tour offered by Wild Rover Tours. From start to finish, Brendan and Krishna provided excellent customer service. The tour started on time, we were seamlessly dropped off and picked up at every location without delay, and it was a smooth journey with humorous and informative commentary throughout. Brendan kept us well informed, so there was … More never a moment of confusion. At the end of the tour, he even provided tips and recommendations for the rest of our time in Dublin. While I mostly chose this tour for the Black Cab experience in Belfast, I thoroughly enjoyed every activity along the way: Giant’s Causeway, Dunluce Castle, and even our pit stop at the grocery store before the Black Cab tour. An unexpected bonus: after the Black Cab tour, we had time to explore the ground floor of the Titanic museum. It was a long day but a very worthwhile experience, and I highly recommend this tour or any tour offered by Wild Rover Tours.
  • Jeannine Cammarata ★★★★★ 3 weeks ago Eyvonne was great and I appreciate Simon’s safe driving. This was a beautiful tour of the Cliffs and Galway. Perfect for people looking for a day trip from Dublin. Great narratives of what we were seeing and she was really a genuine and very funny person. Pleasure to spend the day with her leading. It’s a long day and lots of windy roads but worth it for the beautiful views
  • Theresa Langston ★★★★★ 4 months ago Our tour to Northern Ireland and the Giant Cliffs were amazing! Our tour guides Krishna and Barbara were so informative and friendly people. Barbara gave us a lot of Irish history and folklore. The Titanic museum in Belfast was so well done and sad too. The Giant Cliffs are amazing! The views are so beautiful. The countryside throughout Ireland is so green. I would recommend this tour to anyone visiting … More Ireland they were amazing tour guides. Thank you so much!
  • Tracey Trower ★★★★★ 2 months ago We had a great tour! We lucked out and had fantastic weather and were entertained the whole time. Expert driving on narrow roads is definitely worth the cost of the tours! There a number of tours that pick up in the same location. The Wild Rover buses are gray and labelled on the side. Be sure you are on the right side of the street. The stops along the way make the trip easy. Since there are a lot … More of tours going to the same places, they can be very busy for getting food so having a plan ahead of time will help. Highly recommend!
  • Katie Howard ★★★★★ 4 months ago Neil and Sarah were fantastic! If you are in Dublin and debating whether this tour is worth it I promise it is. Absolutely amazing. They give you nice long stops so you feel you can take in the area. Great history lessons while driving but also quiet time with music. The sheepdog demonstration was the icing on the cake. I want to come back again now to those areas as they were stunning!

Belfast’s Titanic Hotel has released unique drone footage of the hotel and its surroundings.

Hotel owners Harcourt Developments commissioned Ireland’s leading drone pilot Keith Smith to create extraordinary FPV (first person view) drone films for its Titanic Hotel Belfast and sister property the Titanic Hotel Liverpool. Offering viewers a breathtaking aerial tour of the hotel and its heritage rooms which were originally home to the headquarters of Harland & Wolff, builders of the White Star Line fleet, the three minute film is incredibly captivating.

Adrian McNally, General Manager of Titanic Hotel Belfast, said: “We welcome visitors through the doors of Titanic Hotel Belfast from all over the world every day and they are mesmerised by the history and heritage of this wonderful building. Keith’s skill and mastery as a qualified commercial pilot came into its own as he spectacularly navigated his drone, taking in some of the hotel’s most historic architecture, exploring the Drawing Offices to Thomas Andrews office and The Telephone Exchange. I’m amazed that he made this video, captured using a custom built drone, in just one uncut take!”

The drone speedily sweeps around the hotel soaring over the beautifully presented façade, giving viewers a glimpse of the intricate detail of the exterior of the building from the Titanic Slipways and featuring the awe inspiring Titanic Belfast before showcasing its interior beauty from above and at eye level.

Adrian added: “After watching the film, I believe that viewers locally and internationally will be enthused and inspired to experience the hotel in person, as the drone glides to encapsulate the spirit and significance of the hotel in all its glory from its prominent position on the Maritime Mile. In the meantime, I would encourage anyone who has yet to visit Titanic Hotel Belfast to sit back, relax and enjoy the flight.”
