MANILA, PHILIPPINES — The 31st Travel Tour Expo (TTE) 2024 and the ninth International Travel Trade Expo 2024 will once again wow the crowd with unprecedented travel packages, on February 02 to 04, at the SMX Convention Center Manila, Pasay City.

Organized by the Philippine Travel Agencies Association (PTAA), TTE 2024 highlights how the Philippine tourism and hospitality industries have leveled up to make domestic and international trips for Filipinos more worthwhile through exclusive deals and packages on airfares, tours, and accommodations.

“Post-pandemic, many travelers are eager to make up for lost time. Revenge travel has undeniably played a role in the resurgence of tourism. But more importantly, people have realized that life is short. This renewed eagerness to travel, to live life and experience other places and cultures is definitely long-term,” said Evangeline Tankiang-Manotok, CPA, MPA – PTAA President .

Digital platforms have made travel more accessible, convenient, and personalized. “But travel agencies offer people-to-people connection, a more personalized service who’s always ready to assist in case of misconnections, missing luggage, insurance, etc. We’re not just travel agents–we’re expert travel advisors who can share with you the best advices to give more value for your travel money,” added Patria Chiong, TTE 2024 Chairperson .

TTE 2024 will host more than 200 participating exhibitors with 702 booths, with an anticipated turnout of 100,000 travel enthusiasts. Booths will include airlines, domestic and international travel agencies and tour operators, hotels and resorts, cruise liners and shipping, merchandisers, and more. It will also serve as the launch pad for new destinations, affordable tours, transportation choices, tailor-fit accommodations, and various payment options to cater to every voyager.

This event is sponsored by Tourism Promotions Board, Union Bank of the Philippines, AirSwift Transport, Philippine Airlines, TIEZA, PLDT, and Taiwan Tourism Bureau. Entrance ticket cost for the event is at Php85.00 for general admission and P65.00 for senior citizens.

Palawan joins PTAA’s travel expo at SMX Convention Center

Palawan tourism stakeholders, led by the Provincial Tourism Promotions and Development Office (PTPDO) of the provincial government, are in Manila participating in the 30th Philippine Travel Agencies Association (PTAA) Travel Tour Expo 2023.

According to Atty. Christian Jay Cojamco, information officer of the provincial government, the expo started on Wednesday and would end tomorrow, February 5.

He stated that the objective is to continue promoting Palawan as the best island in the world, not only through its well-known destinations but also through its culture and traditions, in order to attract tourists.

“Layunin ng paglahok ng pamahalaang panlalawigan sa naturang aktibidad na lalo pang maipakilala ang mga destinasyon, kultura at tradisyon ng Palawan at hikayatin ang mga magtutungo sa travel expo na bumisita at magbakasyon sa lalawigan,” he said.

Ceasar Sammy Magbanua, chief of staff of Palawan Governor Victorino Dennis Socrates, also joined the province’s group to witness the opening of Booth Nos. 365-370 of the Department of Tourism (DOT) MIMAROPA.

Magbanua particularly visited the Palawan booth being managed by PTPDO Marketing Chief Arnoldo Valdez Jr. with Palawan Tourism Council (PTC) representatives Salvacion Era of El Mundo Travel and Tours and James Lawrence Gomez of the Coron Hilltop View Resort.

PTAA is the largest travel agency association in the country that is currently celebrating its Pearl Anniversary. With 400 exhibitors and 1,000 booths, the event’s travel expo is anticipated to attract 80,000 to 100,000 prospective tourists.

Among activities prepared by the PTAA for the major travel expo were live performances, cultural dance competition, raffle for free airfare, additional accommodation, and travel discounts from exhibitors.

The signs are clear, it is the year of travel for Filipinos.

This was pronounced by travel professionals and experts who have observed a surge in purchases of goods and services related to travel in the past six months, cutting across all age and income consumer groups.

Evangeline Tankiang-Manotok, president of the Philippine Travel Agencies Association (PTAA), said this trend is most welcome as Filipinos look forward to exploring the globe once again after being restricted for about three years due to COVID-19.

“ The enthusiasm for travel and to see different places once again is making for a bouyant travel industry, and we at PTAA are very much ready to cater to the demand,” says Tankiang-Manotok.

In response, the 550-member strong PTAA is bringing back the 31st Travel Tour Expo (TTE) and the 9th International Travel Trade Expo 2024 set on Feb. 2 to 4, 2024 at the SMX Convention Center Manila, Mall of Asia Complex, Pasay City, featuring a massive number of enticing travel deals, exclusive discounts, and destination packages to provide travelers cost-effective options to fit various budgets and preferences.

“ We are pooling together our expertise under one roof to provide Filipino travelers with the best advice and make them realize that there are so many options for them. PTAA’s collective wisdom and many years of experience make this possible,” says Tankiang-Manotok.

TTE 2024 will be a marketplace for travel deal seekers as it hosts more than 200 exhibitors with 702 booths that include airlines, domestic and international travel agencies and tour operators, hotels and resorts, cruise liners and shipping, merchandisers, and more.

TTE organizers are also maximizing new technologies that are changing the landscape of travel and combining them with the personal assistance and expertise of PTAA members-exhibitors.

“ There are some challenges associated with the rise of the online platform. The overall impact on the travel industry is overwhelmingly positive. So digital platforms have made travel more accessible, convenient, and personalized, contributing to the industry’s overall growth and evolution. But at TTE, you get to speak to a travel agent who would provide you a more thorough understanding of the offers compared to what is being promoted online,” says Dominic Castillejos of Batanes Travel and Tours.

The Philippines is a haven for tourists. The record number of five million international tourist arrivals in 2023 is a testament to it. “Our beaches are the best. Also, our hospitality is one of the qualities that foreigners truly enjoy,” adds Tankiang-Manotok.

Boracay, Bohol, Palawan, and Siargao are favorites among local tourists. “These are places that are on their bucket list. Batanes is slowly becoming a favorite as well. Before they go abroad they want to visit places that they have never been in the country,” says Castillejos.

For international travel, among favorites listed by first-time local travelers are Hong Kong, Thailand, and Singapore, according to Castillejos. High-end travelers, meanwhile, opt for places in Europe, he said.

The 31st Travel Tour Expo (TTE) 2024, along with the ninth International Travel Trade Expo 2024, is happening from Feb. 2 to 4 at the SMX Convention Center Manila, Pasay City. 

Hosted by the Philippine Travel Agencies Association (PTAA), TTE 2024 is a showcase of the strides made by the Philippine tourism and hospitality industries, offering exclusive deals and packages for both domestic and international trips.

PTAA President, Evangeline Tankiang-Manotok, CPA, MPA, notes that the post-pandemic era has sparked a resurgence in travel enthusiasm, with many seeking to make up for lost time. This renewed interest in travel is expected to be a lasting trend.

“This renewed eagerness to travel, to live life and experience other places and cultures is definitely long-term,” says Tankiang-Manotok.

Patria T. Chiong, TTE 2024 Chairperson, emphasizes the continued importance of travel agencies in providing personalized service and human connection. Travel agencies are not just intermediaries; they serve as expert travel advisors, offering assistance for issues like misconnections, missing luggage, and insurance.

“Digital platforms have made travel more accessible, convenient, and personalized. But travel agencies offer people-to-people connection, a more personalized service,” Chiong adds.

With over 200 exhibitors and 702 booths, TTE 2024 anticipates drawing a crowd of 100,000 travel enthusiasts. The booths will feature airlines, domestic and international travel agencies, tour operators, hotels, resorts, cruise liners, and more. The event will serve as a launchpad for new destinations, affordable tours, transportation options, tailor-fit accommodations, and various payment choices.

TME is one of the biggest travel and trade fairs in the Philippines. It is supported by local and national tourism organizations, travel authorities, airlines, cruise lines, hotels, travel agencies, theme parks, insurance companies, schools, real property companies, and other business establishments in the retail and food industries.

TME’s successful display of destinations and cultures from around the world has made it a must-see event for travel enthusiasts.

The most recent edition, Travel Madness Expo 2023 (TME 2023),  was held from June 30 – July 2, 2023, at Halls 1-4, Ground Floor, SMX Convention Center – Manila, MOA Compound, Pasay City. It was the 10th edition organized by Travel Innovators, Inc with the theme, “Travel: We’re back in full color.”

TME 2023 was the first face-to-face edition after the COVID-19 outbreak which struck the world in the first quarter of 2020. The 9th edition was cancelled in 2020 and was replaced by an online TME in 2022.

It seemed like a daunting task to start anew. However, with all the sacrifices each one of us in the travel and trade industry has made in the past years, saying that a pot of gold is waiting for us at the end of the rainbow might be inapt. Beyond the outbreaks are breakthroughs in the field that we all know is ever evolving, but it is the one place we find ourselves coming back to. Thus, TME 2023 was bravely staged.

Moving forward, we found ourselves simply having that passion to make things better for everyone. TME 2024 now brings you, a magical experience with the combination of travel, technology, and wonderful dreams.

Travel Tour Expo Brief History

The PTAA Travel Tour Expo was established in 1993 mainly as an annual market for Philippine Travel Agencies Association (PTAA) members for discounted travel deals which have grown immensely thru the years.

During those early years, it was for the sole purpose that PTAA members could have a platform to offer discounted domestic and international travel deals along with other travel related products and merchandize, but now, it is considered as the country’s biggest and the most awaited annual travel and tourism event.

Visitors number had also grown throughout the years generating a big sales volume for all the exhibitors consisting of Travel Agencies & Tour Operators, Airlines, Hotels & Resorts, Food Concessionaires, Theme Parks, Entertainment, Associations, Embassies, National Tourism Organizations including our own Department of Tourism, Cruise Liners, Shipping, Travel Insurance Companies, Travel Essentials, Foreign-based Travel Agencies & Tour Operators, and other travel related entities. Sales of exhibitors have also grown proportionately. Promotions of this event have also elicited a lot of support from media and thru our sponsors.

TTE Visitor Profile targets the Travel & Tourism Trade Practitioners; Corporate and Business Travelers; Holiday Travelers; Incentive and Convention Planners; Government and Business Leaders; Direct Buyers as well as Investors.

Briefly the PTAA Travel Tour Expo started 30 years ago in one of the halls of Megatrade in SM Megamall in Mandaluyong City occupying 1, 348 square meters of space. Every year it started to grow that by 2005, it occupied all the halls of Megatrade measuring 3,878 square meters. In 2006, TTE moved to SMX Convention Center and used 4,565 square meters of their floor space. By 2014, TTE occupied the whole ground floor and another exhibition hall in the second floor totaling 11,030 square meters of selling space. In 2015, TTE then occupied the entire SMX Convention Center except for one hall in the second floor. The total space is equivalent to 13,880 square meters. But then for the succeeding years, TTE has been occupying the entire Halls and Function Rooms of the SMX Convention Center which was only disrupted during the Covid-19 Pandemic.

Year 2023 is a celebration of TTE’s 30th Year, the “Pearl Anniversary”, with more than 300 Exhibitors occupying 671 booths with a total space of 11,980 square meters. This  milestone is in cooperation with the generosity and full support of the Department of Tourism (DOT); Tourism Promotions Board (TPB); Philippine Airlines; CITIBANK; AirSWIFT; United Airlines; PLDT; Hotel 101; Tourism Infrastructure and Enterprise Zone Authority (TIEZA); and Guam Visitors Bureau.  Other events to look forward to during the 3-day Expo are Raffle Draws, Corporate Game Shows, Entertainment, Exhibitors and Sponsors Presentations, Cultural Dance Competition, and Conferences.

Simultaneous with the TravelTour Expo is the conduct of 8th International Travel Trade Expo (iTTE) to be held in the same venue. The iTTE is an innovation that they added to TTE’s successful event in 2015. It’s a B2B travel trade mart devoted towards tapping the growing Philippine market for overseas travel exclusive to travel agents and tour operators to network with local and international travel-related suppliers.

The Philippine Travel Agencies Association (PTAA), the largest and most prestigious travel agency association in the country, is always at the forefront in helping advance the travel industry’s growth and expansion. For next year, PTAA is launching its annual and most anticipated travel event, the 30th Travel Tour 2023 and the 8th International Travel Trade Expo 2023 slated on February 3 to 5, 2023 at the SMX Convention Center in MOA Complex, Pasay City.

As projected, the 30th Travel Tour Expo 2023 will be much bigger and more exciting than the previous year’s expo in terms of total exhibit area, foot traffic, numbers of exhibitors, travel deals and packages and entertainment activities.

The 30th Travel Tour Expo 2023 is expected to occupy two floors of the SMX Convention Center as compared to a single floor this year. To fill up this space, it expects to attract about 300 exhibitors for 2023. This means more floor area for exhibitors offering more travel accessories, travel deals and packages and other travel related services. In terms of foot traffic, organizers have projected 80,000 to 100,000 visitors for the Travel Tour Expo 2023.

As early as November of this year, Travel Tour Expo organizers has confirmed about 250 exhibitors have signed up, occupying 700 booths of which 16 are airlines companies both local and international, with 96 hotels and resorts participating. These numbers are expected to go up as the event date nears. “For the exhibitors, we expect more to join us as the Travel Tour Expo is not just a place to sell their products and services but more importantly, it is a perfect vehicle to promote their business. At the expo, they can showcase their travel services, tourist attractions and travel packages. As thousands visit the travel expo event every year, it is definitely a place where they can get maximum exposure for their businesses,” PTAA President Michelle Taylan said.

As the world economy opens up, local and international travel deals are being offered by several travel agencies. “Travel agencies have conceptualized several travel deals like the group travel package, one has to join a big group of tourists to avail of the big discounts and this is inclusive of transport fares, hotel accommodation, and food. The client will just have to book in advance and choose an installment plan with low down payment to make their travel experience really affordable,” Taylan added.

With the success and popularity of the Travel Tour Expo, it has become a significant event in the travel industry as it help boost business in the travel industry. As thousands of travel transactions are consummated during the event valued at several millions, it will definitely improve the recovery effort of the travel industry as well as the Philippine economy in general.

Mark your calendars, travel junkies. The 31st Travel Tour Expo (TTE) and the 9th International Travel Trade Expo will be coming back this February to address all your revenge travel needs.

With the theme “World within reach,” this year's expo will take place from Feb. 2 to 4 at the SMX Convention Center Manila in Pasay City. The annual event organized by the Philippine Travel Agencies Association (PTAA) will once again showcase the latest travel destinations, with travel deals and exclusive discounts up for grabs.

Here’s what you need to know about the upcoming event.

Over 200 local and international exhibitors

More than 200 exhibitors and 702 booths are expected to participate in the travel expo. There will be booths from airlines, domestic, and international travel agencies, tour operators, hotels and resorts, cruise liners and shipping companies, and more. The event expects a turnout of 100,000 travel enthusiasts.

According to PTAA, there will be at least 68 sellers and 220 registered buyers coming from Australia, Balkan, China, Dubai, Egypt, France, Greece, India, Indonesia, Israel, Italy, Japan, Kenya, Malaysia, Morocco, New Zealand, the Philippines, Singapore, South Africa, Taiwan, Turkey, UAE, the US, and Vietnam. 

Early access for cardholders

E vent gates of the SMX Convention Center at the Mall of Asia Complex will open at 10:00 a.m. on the first day, and 9:30 a.m. on the second day. However, Unionbank cardholders will get early access and may avail of special rates from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. on Feb. 2.

Four halls will be occupied on the second floor of the SMX Convention Center for travel boards, agents, and businesses. All the halls will be open to the public on Feb. 2 and 3. 

Packages and promos to the hottest destinations

Travel enthusiats can expect a diverse range of travel packages, accommodations, flights, exclusive discounts, and other travel-related services. The expo will offer packages and promos for new destinations, affordable tours, transportation, and accommodations, with various payment options to cater to every type of traveler. 

According to PTTA, among the top destinations for local and foreign tourists within the Philippines are Palawan, Boracay, and Bohol, with Batanes emerging as a rising destination. 

Korea and Japan top the list of international destinations that Filipinos want to travel to along with Hong Kong, Thailand, and Singapore for first-time local travelers. Meanwhile, high-end travelers often opt for European destinations.

Human connection from travel agencies

While booking trips via digital platforms has made travel more convenient, the travel expo will give attendees a chance to speak to travel agents who can provide personalized service and explain travel deals and packages more thoroughly. 

Travel agents can provide a “human connection” and expertise to answer questions on specific destinations, misconnections, missing luggage, and insurance, among others.

In a press conference in Makati on Jan. 18, PTAA noted the rise of new travel trends such as gig tripping where fans travel to foreign countries to watch concerts; and set-jetting , which involves traveling to destinations featured as film locations in popular movies and television shows, which travel agencies can customize packages around.

Domestic and international flight deals

Travel enthusiasts can browse around and book flights from at least 19 airlines flying to different local and international destinations. Airlines include flag carriers and budget airlines of top destinations like South Korea, Japan, Taiwan, Singapore, and Vietnam, as well as Australia, Europe, Africa, and the Middle East.

E ntrance tickets to the PTAA Travel Expo will cost P85 for general admission while senior citizens get a discounted rate of P65.

About the Event

The 27th PTAA TravelTour Expo 2020 is slated at the SMX Convention Center, Mall of Asia (MOA), Pasay City on February 7-9, 2020. Organized by the Philippine Travel Agencies Association (PTAA), this year’s edition is dubbed: “More > Real.”

The Hon. Secretary Bernadette Romulo-Puyat of the Department of Tourism is invited to deliver the keynote address.

To be participated in by more than 400 exhibitors from the travel agency and tourism enterprise industry, there will be over 1000 booths, and up to 70% discounts on cruise lines, hotels, theme parks, and airline fares. Packages offered apply to solo and group travel.

Being the largest annual gathering on travel and tours—domestic or international—the three-day expo expects to welcome more than 100,000 guests. This aims for travel agencies and tour operators to give more value to travel buffs, more savings through affordable limited-time deals, and “out-of-this-world” promotions.

Corporate travelers will also participate in the 5th International TravelTrade Expo 2020, with some 30 participating countries expected to showcase travel and tour deals for the business-to-business category of the expo. This event is exclusive to registered trade buyers and sellers, happening on February 2-4, 2020. This is also an opportunity for travel and tour agencies to share cost-effective experiences with the assistance and guidance of their seasoned travel advisors.

Bridge draw schedule

Except during the winter, the 9 low bridges in St. Petersburg are drawn during the night to allow for the passage of boat traffic. Therefore, if you don't make it to the side of the river where you are staying before the bridges are drawn and there are no high bridges to cross, you will be stuck until the bridges are lowered. There are "breaks" when some the bridges are lowered in the middle of the night for approximately 30 minutes to briefly allow everyone to get home. The bridge schedule is particularly noteworthy for those staying on Vasilyevsky Island, which is unreachable at certain times of the night. Seeing the bridges drawn in the middle of the night is a must for all visitors to the city!

The Bolshoy Obukhovskiy Most, 14 km south of the Alexander Nevsky Bridge (Most Aleksandra Nevskogo), is never drawn, allowing for 24-hour crossing of the Neva River. However, the bridge is out of the way and will increase the cost of your taxi or Uber.

The following are the times when the bridges are drawn and will not be able to be crossed:

By public transport

Electronic card "Podorozhnik" debit cards are the easiest and cheapest way to pay public transport fares for metro, bus, and trams. They can be acquired at the metro cash desks, charged at the desks or the automated ticket machines in metro stations and then used to pay metro and bus fare by simply swiping over the readers at buses or turnstiles. Funds or passes can be loaded onto the card. See info boards besides the cash desks for pricing. There is an additional RUB60 deposit for the card which will be refunded when you return it. The cards work for all metro, tram and trolleybus fares in St. Petersburg and many bus routes. Some private bus routes and most or all Marshrutki do not accept the cards, so money in coins may be needed for some routes. Ticket controllers carry a small card reader to verify if the Podorozhnik card was swiped in the bus, so that works as expected.

Fares can also be paid by tapping a Russian debit or credit card on the reader, but the fares are usually higher.

Saint Petersburg's metro system is the second largest in Russia, after that of Moscow . The metro is a cheap and effective way to get around the city, and also a major tourist attraction due to the beautiful decorations of the stations. Amateur photography (without a tripod, etc.) is allowed, although professional photography is prohibited. The trains are fast and run frequently. During rush hour, there are 2-3 minutes between trains. Fares are RUB49 per entry if paid via Podorozhnik debit card, regardless of the distance traveled, or RUB70 if paid by contactless Russian debit or credit card or via a token.

Opening and closing times vary; the subway is closed from approximately midnight to approximately 05:45, depending on the station.

Metro maps can be found in every train car and always have station names in the Latin alphabet. The station names on the platforms are also in the Latin alphabet, and many other signs are in English. Station announcements on the train are only in Russian, but if you listen carefully you will hear the conductor announce the current station name and the next station as the doors are closing.

Stations are deep underground, and transferring trains at transfer stations involves long walks that can take up to 10 minutes.

Trains can be extremely crowded during rush hour. Be aware of your belongings and expect to have to push your way out of the train upon arrival at your station.

Exploring more

The center has much more sights. Mars Field with the Memorial to the Revolutionary Fighters and the Eternal Flame, the Circus, wonderfully baroque Smolny Cathedral, Peter the Great's Cabin, the rolling parkland of the Tauride Palace and Gardens, Alexander Nevsky Monastery, the Yusupov Palace where Rasputin was killed (if you get the chance to see a performance in the theater inside, jump on it), the neoclassical bust-filled Summer Gardens, Mikhailovsky Castle, the Marble Palace, the small but powerfully heartrending Museum of the Defense and Blockade of Leningrad. Literary buffs should seek out Dostoevsky's local haunts, including the famous "Murder Walk" from Crime and Punishment , which will take you right from Raskolnikov's apartment to the door of the very apartment where the grisly deed was done.

Head back across the river to the Petrograd Side , past the Peter and Paul Fortress, you'll find the Saint Petersburg Mosque, the really impressive Military Museum, the museum-ship of the Cruiser Aurora, the ever... interesting Museum of Political History, and the Botanical Gardens. On Vasilievsky , the whole Neva embankment is filled with great museums and grand buildings. Especially great places to visit (aside from the aforementioned Naval Museum and Kunstkamera) include the Menshikov Palace (run by the Hermitage), the Twelve Collegia, and the Mining Museum. And don't forget to hunt down the some 3,300 year-old sphinx statues from the Theban Necropolis!

Further afield

There are many things to see in the north and south of the city—especially in the south. Southern Saint Petersburg is home to the Narva Triumphal Arch and its sister monument—the Moscow Triumphal Gate, the huge Monument to the Heroic Defenders of Leningrad (which honestly should be one of the main attractions in this city, if not for its distance from the center), Moscow Victory Park, and one of the best examples of Stalinist architecture (more interesting than you'd think) at the House of the Soviets, fronted by a very large Lenin statue. The most wonderful sight in southern Saint Petersburg, though, may be the whimsical, candy cane-colored Chesme Church.

The eastern part of the city (colloquially known as the Right bank ) is renowned for its nineteenth century industrial architecture in the districts of Okhta and Porokhovye (former gunpowder factories).

Northern Saint Petersburg is a bit less notable, but adventurous travelers can find some things of interest, especially in the old industrial district around the Finliandskii Station, at the Forestry Academy and Piskaryovskoye Memorial Cemetery for the fallen in the Siege of Leningrad.

The naval fortress of Kronstadt at Kotlin island, nowadays accessible by road across the dam, is a very significant site for fans of the history of military architecture, and makes for enjoyable day trips by boat.

The Telegram Messenger groups SPB_Hangouts, InterNational Events , SPb Couchsurfing , Say Yes Saint Petersburg , and English Meetup Saint Petersburg all contain almost daily events for meeting other foreigners, excursions, or practicing languages.

Opera and Ballet

The Mariinsky is perhaps the most well-known institution for opera and ballet, but it is by no means the only theater in the city. Tickets are sold on each theater's website, at each theatre's box office, and at kiosks and shops called Teatralnaya Kassa. Sometimes blocks of tickets sell out at the kiosks but tickets are still available at the theater, or vice versa, so it is worth checking both places if you have your heart set on a particular performance. It is possible to take not-so-small children into some performances if you take a private box, although you will need to ask when you buy your tickets.

Other Theatres

The music scene in St. Petersburg is diverse, with several classical, jazz, and pop concerts to choose from each week. Tickets are available at the same Teatralnaya Kassa locations as ballet and opera tickets, although tickets to pop concerts - especially US and European stars on tour - sometimes use exclusive distributors. For pop and rock concerts, unless you buy tickets for the dance floor (tanzpol), you are expected to sit quietly in your seat as if you were at a ballet - ushers are vigilant about keeping the audience from standing up, dancing, or cheering (polite applause is allowed, but that's about all).

Several of the ballet and opera theaters above also offer orchestral and recital performances, so those are not repeated below. Also, don't forget the many small clubs where up and coming bands play.

Most cinemas in St. Petersburg show Hollywood films dubbed in Russian. Art cinemas like Dom Kino often show independent American or British movies subtitled in Russian.

Annual Message to Man international documentary, short, and animated films festival takes place in October, screening many films in English.

Canal boat tours

A tour of the canals by boat is a great way to see the city in the summer. The typical tour is through the Moika, out to the Neva to see the Peter and Paul Fortress and the Cruiser Aurora, then in through the Fontanka (sometimes as far as the Mariinsky Theater). Tours start at many points along the route and return to their starting point - hawkers for different boat companies abound on Nevsky Prospect. Boats may or may not have a cafe and toilet on board. Most tours are in Russian but English tours can booked from the Water Tourism Center . Prices range from RUB1,000 to RUB3,000.

Watch football: FC Zenit Saint Petersburg play in the Russian Premier League, the top tier of Russian football. Their home ground is Krestovsky Stadium, on Krestovsky island 10 km north of city centre. Take Metro M3 (Green Line) west towards Begovaya and get off at Novokrestovskaya. The stadium will host matches at the upcoming Euro 2020 tournament.

Viewpoints and rooftops

The best views in the city are from rooftops, such as rooftop bars and restaurants. Nice views can also be obtained by climbing the 250+ steps of St. Isaac's Cathedral. Rooftop tours , generally in Russian and costing RUB1,000, are also offered.

Tourist traps

Gypsy cabs are ubiquitous and a little risky; never take one lingering near bars/clubs where expatriates and tourists congregate.

Saint Petersburg has a relatively big problem with street children who make their living out of stealing. They can be a hassle and can beg you aggressively. Act like any other Russian would: say no, then just ignore them and go away. If they start touching you, be very firm in pushing them away.

Gay travelers must practice extreme caution while staying in Saint Petersburg, as attacks often occur. Many Russian people look upon public demonstrations of homosexuality with undisguised contempt. It is advised to not openly display one's sexuality.

Natural hazards

Another subtle danger that can affect your trip is the inevitable effect of winter weather. Poor harvesting of snow and ice is a big problem in the city. Caution is advised in snowy winters because of falling ice from roofs, and pedestrians should pay special attention to ice on the streets. Snow on marble is very, very slippery—take small steps and watch your feet!

St. Petersburg regularly experienced floods during its history, sometimes catastrophic. However, the construction of the preventive dam has been completed, and catastrophic floods are unlikely to happen again.

Overall, be warned that if you are used to living in the US and/or Western Europe, Saint Petersburg, as well as the rest of Eastern Europe, will seem different, and, at times, a bit intimidating. On the other hand, Russian people are usually friendly, welcoming and interested towards foreigners, and nothing should happen to you unless you put yourself in harm's way. If you don't care about them they don't care about you, and nothing should get in your way of having a great holiday.

Overnight trips

If you leave Russia and plan to return, make sure you have a multiple entry visa.

• Novgorod — Ancient town with churches and museums, 180 km from St. Petersburg, can be accessed by high-speed trains.
• Narva , Estonia — 160 km southwest of Saint Petersburg on the Narva river, which serves as the border between Russia and Estonia. Twin castles (Russian, established Grand Duke Ivan III, and Danish/Swedish).
• Vologda — this city is considered the heart of Russian North, a popular local travel destination. Reachable by overnight train, from there you can go to Moscow or further north to Arkhangelsk .
• Petrozavodsk and the rest of Karelia — popular Russian travel destination for its beautiful nature and access to White Sea islands. Reachable by overnight or high-speed train.
• Moscow — the Russian capital is reachable by overnight train or in the daytime by the high-speed Sapsan train (about 4 hr) or by plane. As much to see as in St. Petersburg, so plan on several days here.

Travel Trade Expo at SMX kicks off Year of Travel for Filipinos

The signs are clear, it is the year of travel for Filipinos.

This was pronounced by travel professionals and experts who have observed a surge in purchases of goods and services related to travel in the past six months, cutting across all age and income consumer groups.

Evangeline Tankiang-Manotok, president of the Philippine Travel Agencies Association (PTAA), said this trend is most welcome as Filipinos look forward to exploring the globe once again after being restricted for about three years due to COVID-19.

“The enthusiasm for travel and to see different places once again is making for a buoyant travel industry, and we at PTAA are very much ready to cater to the demand,” says Tankiang-Manotok.

In response, the 550-member strong PTAA is bringing back the 31st Travel Tour Expo (TTE) and the 9th International Travel Trade Expo 2024 set on Feb. 2 to 4, 2024, at the SMX Convention Center Manila, Pasay City, featuring a massive number of enticing travel deals, exclusive discounts, and destination packages to provide travelers cost-effective options to fit various budgets and preferences.

“We are pooling together our expertise under one roof to provide Filipino travelers with the best advice and make them realize that there are so many options for them. PTAA’s collective wisdom and many years of experience make this possible,” says Tankiang-Manotok.

TTE 2024 will be a marketplace for travel deal seekers as it hosts more than 200 exhibitors with 702 booths that include airlines, domestic and international travel agencies and tour operators, hotels and resorts, cruise liners and shipping, merchandisers, and more.

TTE organizers are also maximizing new technologies that are changing the landscape of travel and combining them with the personal assistance and expertise of PTAA members-exhibitors.

“There are some challenges associated with the rise of the online platform. The overall impact on the travel industry is overwhelmingly positive. So digital platforms have made travel more accessible, convenient, and personalized, contributing to the industry’s overall growth and evolution. But at TTE, you get to speak to a travel agent who would provide you a more thorough understanding of the offers compared to what is being promoted online,” says Dominic Castillejos of Batanes Travels and Tours.

The Philippines is a haven for tourists. The record number of 5 million international tourist arrivals in 2023 is a testament to it. “Our beaches are the best. Also, our hospitality is one of the qualities that foreigners truly enjoy,” adds Tankiang-Manotok.

Boracay, Bohol, Palawan, and Siargao are favorites among local tourists. “These are places that are on their bucket list. Batanes is slowly becoming a favorite as well. Before they go abroad they want to visit places that they have never been in the country,” says Castillejos.

For international travel, among favorites listed by first-time local travelers are Hong Kong, Thailand, and Singapore, according to Castillejos. High-end travelers, meanwhile, opt for places in Europe, he said.
