Nestling among the “Everlasting Hills” on the eastern slope of the mountains, 900 feet above sea level, Tyrone is not less desirable as a place of residence or of temporary sojourn that as a location for business. Its streets are broad and clean and it’s houses neat and comfortable. It has the purest water flowing from the summit of the Alleghanies, gas and electric lights, and schools and churches not inferior to those of larger cities. Those who seek rest and recreation in the hot weather can make no better choice than to spend their vacation in a place which has all the comforts of the city at the least expense, and the freedom and charms of the country brought to their doors. The visitor may find entertainment to his liking in hotel and private house, where his night’s repose will be untroubled by noise or heat or “creature” discomforts.

Chimney Rocks Park is named for the tall, chimney-shaped limestone pillars on top of this mountain at the heart of the park.

According to local legend, the flat spot on top of one of the limestone “chimneys” was called the “Chief’s Seat” and was used as a lookout by the local Native American tribal chief.

4. The Abandoned Lime Kilns at Canoe Creek State Park

The  abandoned lime kilns at Canoe Creek State Park   are remnants of a thriving limestone-processing facility that once operated around the clock in this now-tranquil corner of  Blair County .

Lime produced here in the early 1900s was loaded onto Pennsylvania Railroad cars and shipped off to the Jones and Laughlin steel mills in Pittsburgh.

It’s hard to imagine as you stand in front of the silent lime kilns today how much smoke, noise, commotion, and back-breaking work went on in this location for the decade or so that the kilns were in operation.

5. DelGrosso’s Amusement Park

DelGrosso’s Amusement Park   has been a central PA tradition for  more than 100 years!

DelGrosso’s Amusement Park offers free parking, free admission, and over 30 rides , with something for everyone from little kids to adults.

Laguna Splash is a fabulous water park attached to DelGrosso’s Amusement Park , for even more summer fun!

6. Fort Roberdeau

Fort Roberdeau in Blair County  was built in 1778 by American colonists during the Revolutionary War, and was occupied until 1780.

The fort was originally  erected by   General Daniel Roberdeau   to protect local lead mining activities  from British loyalists and their Native Americans allies.

7. Antique Depot

Antique Depot and Flea Market  is housed in a 74,000 square foot indoor facility in Duncansville,  Blair County.

Home to nearly  200 different antique dealers and flea market vendors , you’ll find a huge variety of antiques, collectibles, and unique objects at Antique Depot.

8. Canoe Creek State Park

There’s a LOT more to Canoe Creek State Park than just the famous lime kilns!

Canoe Lake , at 155 acres, is the focal point of recreation at the park.

Canoe Creek State Park features  12 miles of hiking trails , providing opportunities to explore forests, fields, wetlands, historic sites, and the lakeshore.

9. Tytoona Cave

Tytoona Cave is part of a 6.8 acre Nature Preserve between the cities of Tyrone and Altoona in Blair County.

According to the National Speleological Society ,  “The first 1,000 feet of the cave are easily accessible by novices and is an excellent location to educate visitors about the cave’s geology and hydrology”.

Tytoona Cave is  open to visitors from 6AM to 9PM. , and exploration is strictly AT YOUR OWN RISK!

10. The Allegheny Portage Railroad

Located on the Blair/Cambria county line, the  Allegheny Portage Railroad near Altoona   is one of the most historic railroading sites in Pennsylvania!

This 36 mile-long track was   the first railroad built across the Allegheny Mountains , allowing for canals on the eastern and western sides of the state to be connected,  cutting the travel time from Pittsburgh to Philadelphia from weeks to just days.

Today, the  Allegheny Portage Railroad National Historic Site  is maintained by the  National Park Service , allowing visitors to learn about and explore first-hand the “glory days” of the Allegheny Portage Railroad near Altoona.

11. The Everett Railroad

The Everett Railroad offers captivating  steam train excursions  from its nostalgic station in  Hollidaysburg,   Blair County.

Each ride is a unique celebration, from the festive Santa Express in December to  nearly a dozen themed events , capturing the essence of holiday and seasonal changes throughout the year.

12. The Baker Mansion

The Baker Mansion is  a three-story, Greek Revival-style home  built by ironmaster Elias Baker between 1844 and 1848.

Today the Baker Mansion serves as the Blair County Historical Society’s headquarters and museum , and is open to visitors May-December .

13. Cabbage Creek Falls

Cabbage Creek Falls  is a picturesque little waterfall tucked away in Shawnee Park (not to be confused with  Shawnee State Park ) in Blair County.

Located on the outskirts of   Roaring Spring, Cabbage Creek Falls is a perfect short hike for just about any age or ability level.

14. Leighty’s Flea Market

Leighty’s Flea Market in Blair County  is one of my favorite outdoor flea markets in all of Pennsylvania!

Featuring a little bit of everything, Leighty’s Flea Market is  a 29 acre goldmine for collectors of all things “vintage” , as well as a fun place to window shop and people-watch.

15. Altoona-Style Pizza

Altoona-style pizza  may be the most talked-about Pennsylvania culinary invention in the history of social media!

29th Street Pizza Subs & More in Altoona is one of the best places to try this uniquely local version of Sicilian/thick crust pizza.

16. Holiday Lights on the Lake

Holiday Lights on the Lake   is a massive  drive-through Christmas light display  in Altoona!

The drive-through display features  over 1 million lights  illuminating  more than 50 acres  of Lakemont Park.

17. I99 Antiques in Tyrone

I99 Antiques   is a two-level, multivendor antique store in downtown  Tyrone , Blair County.

Even if you’re more of a looker than a collector, you’re bound to enjoy spending some time at I99 Antiques , if only to reminisce about items from your past that are now “antiques”!

Ulster American Folk Park

Situated in the town of Omagh, this exhibition examines life in Ulster during the 18 th and 19 th centuries and allows you to take a look at how emigrants lived during this time, both before and after their transatlantic journey and the challenges, they faced. This museum not only shows you how life was during these centuries, but it also takes you on a journey through it by way of an interactive experience.

With thatched cottages, an emigrant ship, food sampling, and live characters who go through their daily routines while explaining how life was during that time, this attraction allows you to immerse yourself in a completely different era.

Todds Leap Activity Center

If you see yourself as a bit of a daredevil or adrenaline junkie, then this might be for you. Tyrone has no shortage of off-road terrain and this activity center takes full advantage of it.

Located in the town of Ballygawley, Todds Leap offers a variety of different activities including off-road driving through muddy terrain, a 500m zip line over a lush green forest, and a 30ft free-fall drop zone landing on what is effectively a bouncing castle, and much more. They also have health spa options just in case. A great place for a family adventure.

Hill of the o’neill and ranfurly house arts & visitor center.

This is one of the most significant historical sites in Northern Ireland. Once the home of the powerful O’Neill dynasty, who were also known as the Kings of Tyrone, this archaeological site is situated in the highlands above the town of Dungannon. This was strategically important as it gave its occupiers a view of all the nine counties of Ulster.

The visitor center in Ranfurly House will allow you to delve into the history and major events from the area’s past. From the Flight of the Earls through to the Ulster Plantation.

Beaghmore Stone Circles

Beaghmore is a fascinating Bronze Age megalithic complex, which was covered over for centuries by peat bogs. Sitting on a cliff north of Cookstown, on the southeast edge of the Sperrin Mountains, Beaghmore features ancient burial cairns, standing stones, and stone circles, in addition to – some believe – treasures that have yet to be discovered. They are classified as State Care Historic Monuments.

While some visitors bemoan the appearance of Beaghmore as ‘just a pile of rocks,’ those with a keen interest in Ireland’s history and archaeology will see exactly why they are so special.

Gortin Glen Forest Park

One of the loveliest spots for nature lovers in all of Northern Ireland, Gortin Glen Forest Park is a tranquil escape just six miles north of Omagh. The expansive park, open until 10:00 pm every day, offers something for everyone: mountain biking trails, hiking trails, horse riding, youth camping, and even a five-mile drive for those who want to take it a bit easier.

The forest’s beauty is all the more impressive when you learn it was initially planned for timber production. Today it is home to the Sika deer and a vast array of flora and fauna.

Where to start? Let's try a bit of history - and there's plenty of that here! Explore the ancient Hill of The O’Neill at The Ranfurly House Arts and Visitor Centre or the spectacular Harry Avery’s Castle . It’s here that you’ll discover why County Tyrone’s nickname of ‘O’Neill Country’ has stuck. 

 In fact, you’d be amazed to discover who else’s family trees have branches in Tyrone. Two US Presidents, no less - Ulysses S. Grant and Woodrow Wilson. You’ll find The Grant Ancestral Homestead in Ballygawley and the Wilson Ancestral Home near Strabane. Both are real treats for those with an interest in Irish Ancestry, as is the Ulster American Folk Park in Omagh. Here, you’ll step back in time to experience life as it was in the 18th century and the story of Irish emigration. Maybe your family roots are here too? 

Things to do in County Tyrone 

You’ll love creating your own family memories at An Creagán , nestled in the ancient landscape of the Sperrin foothills. Maybe you’d prefer to saddle up and ride the lush Tyrone countryside on horseback at The Forest Stables. Your dog can enjoy outdoor fun at  Blessingbourne Country Estate  in Fivemiletown which hosts mountain bike trails, a working farm and a museum. Wherever you go, you’ll discover hidden gems everywhere.

Maybe go off the beaten track on a Far and Wild  Sperrins cycle tour. The unspoilt Davagh Forest  is a must if you’re a mountain biker. Or if the water is your thing, paddle your own canoe on Gortin Glen  lakes. Why not try your hand at landing a beauty on the fishing runs of the River Mourne or the grand setting of the seventeenth-century Baronscourt Estate in Newtownstewart. You’ll be hooked for life. And you’ll definitely need a bit of grub after all that activity. 

From the Bronze Age to the Space Age 

A whole new star-gazing experience is coming to County Tyrone, when the OM Dark Sky Park and Observatory opens at Davagh Forest, near Cookstown. Davagh boasts one of the ‘darkest skies’ in Ireland, and with little light pollution the area offers crystal clear views of star constellations. This new centre will provide visitors with a unique opportunity to experience the night sky to the fullest.  

Another plus is that the new observatory will be sited close to the ancient Beaghmore Stone Circles , a complex of early Bronze Age megalithic features, stone circles and cairns. It is also at the foot of the Sperrin mountains and in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Attractions old and new, this area will be well worth your visit. 

Chow time 

If the weather’s fine, a family picnic in Gortin Glen is all you need. But if you prefer someone else to do the cooking, you’re spoiled for choice. County Tyrone is full of great family restaurants and gastropubs. Try The Loco Bar & Grill at the  Valley Hotel in Fivemiletown, or check out the family favourite Yankee Star Grillhouse in Coalisland with their awesome desserts. You will love the  Brewer's House  gastropub – a real gem tucked away in the picturesque village of Donaghmore. You’ll never go hungry in County Tyrone, that’s for sure. 

A piece of shopping heaven  

Once you’re fed and watered, you’ll find the bustling towns of Omagh and Dungannon ideal for a high-street shopping trip. Or if you fancy something different and unique, The Linen Green designer village just off the M1 motorway has to be on your list. Shop ‘til you drop in unique boutiques you won’t find anywhere else!

From Hanging Coffins To Snake Island: World's 10 Most Terrifying Places

From a village full of life-sized dolls to a crater that has been burning for over 50 years, here's a list of 10 spine-chilling places that you might want to read about.

Paying a visit to the world's most terrifying places may sound like a nightmare for many, but some globe-trotters consider it adventurous. If you are one of those, we have a list of 10 spine-chilling places that you might want to explore.

Here are 10 of the world's most terrifying places:

1. Nagoro, Japan

Nagoro is a small village in Japan full of life-sized dolls. These dolls outnumber humans by nearly 10 to 1. Local artist Tsukimi Ayano had started creating lookalike dolls  of her dead neighbours or those who had shifted to a different location. In the village, there are about 350 dolls and 27 humans -- something enough to describe the place as a terrifying toyland.

2. Centralia, Pennsylvania

Back in 1962, a coal mine mysteriously caught fire in Centralia. A few years later, similar isolated incidents occurred - a gas station owner reported dangerously high gasoline temperatures in his underground tanks in 1979, and a boy nearly fell into a 150-foot-deep sinkhole in 1981. After these occurrences, residents started migrating to other locations. As of today, the town has many torn-down buildings and crumbled sidewalks. One might even see smoke coming out from the subterranean fires, which, as per scientists, will continue to burn for another 250 years.

3. Gomantong Caves, Malaysia

Gomantong Caves are home to two million bats that drop their faeces all over the ground and even on the handrails. Additionally, there are several million Malaysian cockroaches, hundreds of snakes, scorpions, and freshwater crabs living there. Still want to pay a visit? We doubt you want to.

4. Hanging Coffins, Philippines

Imagine a place where coffins aren't buried but attached to the sides of cliffs. If you ever visit this location and look up, you will see dead bodies hanging in their customised afterlife homes.

5. The Door To Hell, Turkmenistan

The name of this place is enough to send shivers down anyone's spine. Located in the Karakum Desert in Turkmenistan, the "Door to Hell" is a 230-foot-wide crater that simply keeps on burning. The story behind this place dates back to 1971 when Soviet scientists, who were searching for oil, accidentally hit a methane reserve. The drilling platform collapsed, forming the crater and resulting in a dangerous gas release into the air. The scientists then decided to light the crater on fire to burn off the methane. Now, it has been burning continuously for over 50 years.

6. Snake Island, Brazil

As the name suggests, you will find an insane number of venomous reptiles on this island. Some reports even suggest that there is an average of one to five snakes per square metre here. The venom of these snakes is said to be five times stronger than their mainland counterparts. That is why the Brazilian government has banned the public from entering this place.

7. Haw Par Villa, Singapore

This 86-year-old Singaporean theme park has over 1,000 statues, each as strange as it gets. These statues are so bizarre that you will see a human head on a giant crab, among other peculiarities. The underworld-themed 'Ten Courts of Hell' is considered the main element of Haw Par Villa. To teach young children about morality, the models showcase different types of punishments, such as individuals getting cut in half by a saw for misusing books or people thrown onto a hill of knives for lending money with unreasonably high interest rates.

8. Mount Huashan, China

Dubbed "the most dangerous hike in the world," this location in China is popular for its plank walk - a rickety, 12-inch-wide wooden path attached to the side of a mountain, thousands of feet off the ground. Many visitors hold onto loose metal chains while watching out for broken or missing planks at the same time. Some travellers claim that the hike is worth all the risks due to the beautiful temples and views at the summit.

9. Clown Motel, Nevada

Want to know about the creepiest accommodation? The Clown Motel in Tonopah, Nevada can give you Halloween vibes at any time of the year. It features brightly coloured doors, a polka-dot facade, and two 19-foot clown cutouts on either side of the building. Inside, you'll find over 3,000 clown figurines. Sounds eerie, right?

10. Cerro Negro, Nicaragua

Climbing up an active volcano is thrilling enough, but imagine an activity where you have to sit or stand on a piece of plywood and slide your way down the slopes. Every person runs the risk of being burned by lava or breathing in toxins. It must be noted that Cerro Negro has erupted more than 20 times since 1850.

This Small Town in Pennsylvania Is One of the Best Suburbs to Live in the U.S.

Excellent schools, shops, and affordable real estate make Chesterbrook, Pennsylvania, a desirable place to relocate.

American suburbs, which developed post-World War II and provided inexpensive housing to the country’s growing population, are now home to over 120 million Americans of all demographic and economic backgrounds. While city living has its perks, those seeking a more tranquil environment, lower cost of living, larger homes, and more green spaces often settle in the suburbs that boast some of the best family-friendly amenities and schools in the country. So it should come as no surprise that Niche.com recently named a small Census-designated place near Philadelphia one of the best places to live in the country, beating over 18,000 communities.

Chesterbrook , Pennsylvania, a town of some 5,000 residents located 25 miles northwest of the City of Brotherly Love, ranked third on the website’s list of places and second in the best suburbs category. Chesterbrook is also in the top 10 for best places to raise a family and the best public schools in the U.S. and Pennsylvania, earning high grades for diversity, jobs, housing, health and fitness, and outdoor activities. 

The community, named after a local farm, was established in the late 1960s to early 1970s (not without some controversy ) as a classic residential American suburb with single-family homes and townhouses that provided housing for Philadelphians. While it has managed to maintain its idyllic, laid-back ambiance, residents also have a lot of modern conveniences at their fingertips, like many family-run stores and a shopping center, restaurants, healthcare facilities, and attractions. 

To the north, the town borders Valley Forge National Historical Park, which, with its 3,500 acres of meadows and woodlands, provides an idyllic setting for relaxation and educational activities. (It was an encampment site of the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War.) Wilson Farm Park is another sprawling 90-acre recreational site located at the heart of the town, boasting a playground, baseball fields, and sand volleyball courts. There's also Picket Post Club, a popular private members club, that provides aquatic facilities and swim classes to children, as well as many social activities and events throughout the year.

And while home values in Chesterbrook are on the rise, the median value hovers around the $500,000 mark , which is more affordable than other suburbs offering similar amenities and top-notch public education.
