Our Heritage

Titanic Belfast is an award winning visitor attraction and a monument to Belfast's maritime heritage on the site of the former Harland & Wolff shipyard.

What is Titanic Belfast?

Titanic Belfast is an 8-storey visitor attraction on the edge of the slipways where RMS Titanic was constructed more than a hundred years ago. The main exhibition consists of nine interpretative galleries drawing together special effects, a shipyard ride, full-scale reconstructions and innovative interactive features. In addition to the interpretative galleries, Titanic Belfast features a conference and banqueting suite on the upper floors, including a replica of the liner’s Grand Staircase, as well as a café, restaurant and gift shop in the ground floor atrium. The Andrews Gallery is available for temporary exhibitions, events, performances and meetings, and the Education Suite provides an education facility for schools and community groups. The Titanic Belfast building is owned by the Maritime Belfast Trust.

Who are Maritime Belfast?

DSC08019

The Maritime Belfast Trust was established in 2008, then known as Titanic Foundation Limited, to deliver the Titanic Signature Project. In 2004 Tourism NI and Belfast City Council had recognised the need for a ‘must see visitor attraction’ in Belfast, and the unique position the city had as the birthplace of RMS Titanic. Over the following years a feasibility study and consultation were carried out and the Titanic Signature Project began to emerge. In 2006 the first planning application for the site in Titanic Quarter was submitted, and with the Northern Ireland Assembly taking responsibility for devolved matters in 2007, one of the first key decisions made was the investment in the Titanic Signature Project.  In 2008 Maritime Belfast were established to deliver the project, and be the eventual owners and guardians of Titanic Belfast.

Who paid for Titanic Belfast?

Titanic Signature Building April 2011

Funding for the Titanic Signature Project was a joint private & public investment via Tourism NI, Belfast City Council, Belfast Harbour Commissioners, and Titanic Quarter Limited. Each partner contributed different amounts: the largest donor was Tourism NI, who with their sponsor body the Department of Enterprise, Trade & Investment (DETI) contributed £36.95million, Belfast Harbour donated £13.6million, Belfast City Council £10million, and Titanic Quarter Limited donated £16.35million. As the majority of the funds were a significant public investment, the agreement was reached that the building would be owned and managed by the Maritime Belfast Trust.

How much did it cost to build? And what is that in today’s money?

Overall, the building cost £76million to complete. Works began in 2009, and the building was designed by architect Eric Kuhne, who was inspired by the shape of the prows of the ships that were once built in the shipyard, the White Star Line logo, ice crystals, and the points on a compass. The building was built by Harcourt Construction who are also shareholders of Titanic Quarter Limited. Eric Kuhne was responsible for creating the Titanic Quarter Masterplan in 2006.

In today’s money (2023) building Titanic Belfast would cost around £145million.

Who runs Titanic Belfast?

titanic belfast tourist attraction

One of the key objectives of the Titanic Signature Project was that the building was financially viable and public sector support was minimised, so Maritime Belfast Trust ran a tender exercise to appoint an operator to run the visitor attraction. A newly created operator – Titanic Belfast Limited – were successful. They were brought in to start overseeing operations in 2011, and have run the building ever since – through the successes and challenges of the last decade. They are a commercial operator and pay a fee to Maritime Belfast Trust for the privilege of running Titanic Belfast through an operator agreement. They also report to the Trust on all of their activity, visitor numbers and are responsible for all the maintenance and upkeep of the building.

What is the Gallery Refresh Fund?

Reimagined

As part of the operator agreement, allowance was made for the gallery experience to be updated or ‘refreshed’ in the future. This would see new content added, new stories told, and new artefacts added to the galleries to ensure that the visitor attraction continued to be world class. The Gallery Refresh fund is paid by Titanic Belfast Limited to Maritime Belfast every year, and is held by the Trust while plans are developed for updating the galleries. The sum, which is significant, is held and accumulates until the operator submits proposals which is agreed by our trustees. Over the years the Launch Gallery was updated, and the Life on Board gallery added.

In 2023 a significant investment – £4.5million – has been spent on the final galleries in Titanic Belfast, adding a new ‘wow’ experience to the visitor attraction. As part of that we are incorporating some unique and breath-taking artefacts into the galleries.

What is Titanic Belfast’s economic impact?

TB MBT

As the owners and guardians of Titanic Belfast, Maritime Belfast monitors the visitor attraction’s performance and economic impact to Belfast and Northern Ireland. It was clear that Titanic Belfast had exceeded all targets set for the first year with over 800,000 visitors. In its first three years of operations, Titanic Belfast had more than 2 million visitors, of which 70% came from outside Northern Ireland. The economic impact of those first three years was £105million, a significant achievement.

In the years since, we have brought Deloitte back in several times to update their research and get a better picture of how Titanic Belfast is contributing to the economy.

Ten years since opening, Titanic Belfast has made an economic impact of £430million, there have been over 7.5million visitors from 145 different countries, and Titanic Belfast has really established Belfast as the home of RMS Titanic.

You can read the Deloitte reports here .

Sustainability?

TB Green

Titanic Belfast have been committed to sustainability from the initial conception as a BREEAM Excellent rated building including a number design features from combined heat and power micro-generation, efficient, low energy intelligent lighting and a rainwater harvesting facility.

Throughout the last ten years they have continued to implement lots of excellent initiatives and policies and their commitment has been recently awarded by becoming the first organisation on the island of Ireland to receive Silver Awards for the Green Tourism and Green Meetings accreditations.

The Silver Awards are in recognition of the extensive sustainability initiatives and policies they have put in place across the visitor attraction and the conference and banqueting facilities, which includes a number of ambitious goals including committing to reducing energy consumption by five per cent by 2030, removing all single-use plastic items by 2025 and aiming to become a zero-waste organisation by 2030.

Titanic Belfast: History, The Best Tour + Guide

A visit to Titanic Belfast is high on the list for most visitors when exploring the capital of Northern Ireland.

Located right on the slipways where RMS Titanic was designed, built and launched, the enigmatic Titanic Museum tells the now-infamous story incredibly well.

Visitors can expect exhibits, replica staterooms, photos, documents and you’ll see, hear and even SMELL the shipbuilding process during your tour!

Discover everything from how much Titanic Belfast tickets cost to what to expect from your visit below!

Some quick need-to-knows about Titanic Belfast

map of the titanic belfast

Although a visit to the Titanic Museum is fairly straightforward, there are a few need-to-knows that’ll make your visit that bit more enjoyable.

1. Location

Titanic Belfast is in the heart of Belfast’s Titanic Quarter where it overlooks the River Lagan. It’s a 25-minute walk from both the Belfast Cathedral Quarter and St George’s Market and a 35-minute walk from Ormeau Park .

2. How long a visit takes

You’ll want to allow between 1½ – 2½ hours for the self-guided Titanic Experience while the guided Discovery Tour lasts 1-hour.

3. Admission

An adult ticket for the Titanic Experience costs around €29.60/£24.90 while an adult ticket for the Discovery Tour costs around £12.60/€15. There are other tour options that I’ll explain below.

4. Getting there

You can take the G2 Glider to and from the Titanic Quarter from the city centre. It runs every 12 – 15 minutes.

The story behind the Titanic Museum

Titanic Experience

Photos by Chris Hill via Tourism Ireland

The Titanic is one of the most famous ships ever launched.

Designed, built and launched by Belfast’s leading shipbuilders, Harland and Wolff , it is a fascinating story that led to the epic blockbuster movie of the same name.

Sadly, the luxury liner is not remembered as being the largest ship afloat at that time, but for the disaster that unfolded during her maiden voyage

Belfast circa 1900

In the early 20th century, Belfast was buzzing with industry, particularly shipbuilding, rope-making and linen linen production (it mainly took place in the city’s Cathedral Quarter ).

Around 15,000 Belfast residents were employed by the leading shipyard, Harland and Wolff, under the ambitious Chairman, Lord Pirrie.

Commissioned by White Star Line as a new luxury liner for their fast Transatlantic fleet, the RMS Titanic was the largest man-made moveable object in the world.

It had the latest refinements in luxury including a heated swimming pool, escalators, hot and cold water in each stateroom and a glittering ballroom.

A Titanic disaster

As the ship sailed out on its maiden voyage, a crew of engineers and fitters from Belfast were onboard to complete any last-minute details.

Steaming through the icy waters of Newfoundland Canada at an impressive 20 knots per hour, the Titanic struck an iceberg.

It pierced the hull and the “unsinkable” liner sank to a watery grave taking more than 1500 crew and passengers with it.

Other things to see around the Titanic Quarter

After you’ve finished working your way around the Titanic Exhibition, there’s still plenty to see and do in the surrounding area.

Below, you’ll find info on everything from the building itself (it’s unique to say the least!) to the SS Nomadic and more.

1. The building itself

the titanic building

The landmark building housing the main Titanic Belfast attraction is a work of art in itself. It was designed by Todd Architects and took three years to complete at a cost of £77 million.

The four 38m-high points represent the pointed hulls on the original ship and stand the same height as the original ship.

The 5-story glass atrium has views of the docks and city. It is covered in aluminum shards which were specially designed to shimmer.

2. The SS Nomadic

SS Nomadic

Moored on the waterfront, the SS Nomadic was the tender to the RMS Titanic and is the only surviving White Star Line vessel in existence.

Admission is included in your Titanic Experience ticket.

Restored to its 1911 appearance, it has 4 decks and is a floating museum of interactive exhibits and information about life aboard the RMS Titanic.

3. The slipways

the titanic slipway

See the actual slipways down which the RMS Titanic and many other world-famous vessels have launched.

Walk the replica white stone Promenade Deck and sit on benches arranged as they would have been on Titanic’s deck.

See the positioning of the funnels and lifeboats. It’s a historic place to pause a moment and reflect in the many famous ships that have started their life on this very spot.

Things to do nearby

the best things to do in Belfast Ireland

One of the beauties of a visit to the Titanic Museum in Belfast is that it’s a stone’s throw away from many of the best places to visit in Belfast .

Below, you’ll find everything from walks and food to St Anne’s Cathedral , lively pubs and much, much more.

  • Samson and Goliath cranes (3-minute walk):  Belfast’s most famous landmark

Hello! I love your blog and use it for my Ireland trips' research and have passed the name along to friends. I will be going to Belfast next week and in looking into the Titanic, there is also a third option - the White Star Premium Pass. Do you have any insight into that ticket - value and duration? Interestingly it only starts bookings at noon, while the regular tour is 9am. I have read the museum is very crowded and was hoping to attend first thing, not sure if I should book this or not.

Titanic Belfast, Belfast

Titanic Belfast

  • #NorthernIrelandEmbraceAGiantSpirit

Welcome to Belfast – birthplace of Titanic and home to an award-winning visitor attraction that transports you back to the glory days of Belfast’s maritime history.

Take yourself down the Maritime Mile into the city’s Titanic Quarter and you’ll feel the past looming large. There is the slipway where Titanic was first launched; the SS Nomadic which ferried passengers from shore to board the doomed ocean liner; the Thompson dry dock where Titanic was fitted out in unimaginable luxury. And there, in the heart of it, is the vast shimmering shell that is Titanic Belfast.

Built on the site of the Harland and Wolff shipyard where Titanic was constructed, Titanic Belfast has become one of the world’s leading Titanic attractions. The building itself is a wonder. Its angular, aluminum-clad design mirrors the shape of Titanic’s prow and its height (38 meters) is the same as the ship’s hull. Inside, nine interactive galleries – tracing the ship’s story from creation to tragic sinking – tell the entire tale on an awesome scale. Expect gantry rides, poignant artefacts, and stunning cabin recreations.

Scenes from Titanic Belfast

On your self-guided tour of the Titanic Experience, you’ll explore the stories, the people, and the relics that survived the sinking of Titanic on its maiden voyage in 1912.

A walk through the galleries will immerse you in Belfast’s industrial past (Harland and Wolff was the biggest shipyard in the world at that time) where you’ll meet the legions of craftspeople who created the grandest ship the world had ever seen.

Moving reminders of those that lost their lives are everywhere and include one of only twelve remaining life jackets, a violin used by one of the ship’s musicians, and a pocket watch from passenger Joakim Johnson, frozen at the time of 1:37am when it was submerged in the freezing Atlantic Ocean.

The sinking of Titanic changed the world and the exhibition explains what happened in the aftermath of the tragedy, its lasting legacy and the measures put in place to prevent such a disaster from ever happening again. It also follows the fascinating hunt to find Titanic in its final resting place in the depths of the Atlantic Ocean.

Explore outside the building and you’ll find the slipway from which Titanic was launched and see the life-sized plan of the ship’s promenade deck outlined in white stone. Next to this, the Titanic Memorial Garden offers a reminder of the human cost of the sad tale – permanent glass panels have been etched with the names of the passengers who were lost on that fateful night in April.

Belfast’s extraordinary maritime heritage is celebrated on the Maritime Mile. Starting from the City Quays and finishing at the Titanic Pumphouse, it takes you on a tour of the city’s famous waterfront with stops at important landmarks such as the Great Light, Samson and Goliath (the famous yellow cranes used by Harland and Wolff), and the SoundYard, an art installation that recreates the sound of metal striking metal – sounds that once rang out daily in the bustling Belfast docks.

Close by Titanic Belfast, two important titans of naval history are on view. SS Nomadic is the last remaining White Star Line ship in the world and was built alongside Titanic in 1911 to ferry passengers to the great liner from shore. A self-guided tour is included in your ticket to Titanic Belfast.

And don’t miss HMS Caroline , the second longest-serving warship in the Royal Navy, which has seen action in both World Wars and the Cold War Era.

Susie Millar, Titanic Tours Belfast

No one knows Titanic’s story better than those who live and breathe it. Along with the insight of their ancestors who lived during and, even more importantly, after Titanic’s build, Titanic tour guides in Belfast are unrivaled in their connection to the ship.

The Discovery Tour (part of the Titanic Belfast experience) and Titanic Tours Belfast , run by Susie Millar – great-granddaughter of a Titanic engineer who perished with the ship – are just a couple of options. Or you can take a guided cycling tour with Donal Kelly from Belfast Mic Tours , and he’ll tell you the ever-changing story of Belfast's rich maritime history.

Drawing Office Two at the Titanic Hotel Belfast

Indulge yourself with Afternoon Tea at Titanic Hotel Belfast right beside Titanic Belfast. This luxury hotel is located in the old Harland and Wolff Headquarters and Drawing Offices and is filled with Titanic heritage.

Pay a visit to the Thompson Dock and Pumphouse at the end of the Maritime Mile. The dry dock is the last site where Titanic rested on dry ground as it was fitted out for its maiden voyage. The Pumphouse is the first working distillery in Belfast city in almost 90 years and offers tours as well as tastings of its award-winning spirits.

If you’re heading back into the city, stop into Robinson’s bar where the collection of Titanic memorabilia is so unique that you’ll feel like you’re pottering around a museum. Among the stunning array are a Titanic steward’s badge, a commemorative jewelery box and Philomena – a doll reputedly rescued from Titanic’s floating wreckage.

To cut a long story short, Titanic is Belfast and Belfast is Titanic. If you want the whole story, this is the place to start.

Titanic Belfast: The World’s Largest Titanic Visitor Experience

Categories Antrim , Down , Where To Go

When in the Northern Ireland capital, Titanic Belfast is a definite must-visit. More than a tourist attraction, it is an experience. Located right in the heart of Belfast, this six-story building is right next to the site where the world-famous ship was constructed. Currently, it is one of the best things to do in Belfast, Northern Ireland .

Things you'll find in this article

Titanic Belfast: The World’s Largest Titanic Visitor Experience

A visit to the Titanic Belfast Museum is a one-of-a-kind cultural experience. The first four floors take you through nine interactive galleries. These galleries feature exhibitions about the  Titanic from some design drawings to its first and only voyage.

There’s also an impressive collection of original artifacts. These are carefully considered and guaranteed authentic. The curators at Titanic Belfast also made sure that these items add to the narrative of Belfast’s maritime and industrial heritage, as well as that of the RMS Titanic.

Titanic Belfast is known all over not just for its associations with the legendary Titanic. It is also recognized for the great work that went into ensuring that visitors enjoy the experience. Just how much work, and how long did it take to put up this excellent Belfast attraction?

Titanic Museum in Belfast, Image by Christine Rogador

It all started with the location. The site where the museum stands now used to be part of the Belfast water. This area was used for a variety of purposes, including shipbuilding.

This was where Harland and Wolff constructed graving docks and slipways for building Titanic and Olympic ships.

Sadly, shipbuilding businesses eventually declined. As a result of disuse and disrepair, and most of the derelict buildings were destroyed. This abandoned area was named the Titanic quarter or TQ in  2001. Soon after, plans to refurbish the area started floating around.

The TQ was to be converted into a vibrant, interesting place that has with a Science park, hotels, houses, a museum, and other entertainment facilities.

In 2008, plans for the ‘Titanic Signature Project’ was completed. Funding would come from various organizations such as Northern Ireland Tourist Board and the Belfast Council.

More support came in as the construction of the Titanic Belfast museum progressed. The  Titanic Belfast was eventually finished then opened to the public in March 2012.

Titanic Belfast

The Titanic Belfast has an area of 14,000 square meters. This already covers the interactive galleries and underwater exploration theater. There are also cabins like those in the actual Titanic as well as deluxe suites. Titanic Belfast was designed and intended to tell a story. This story does not solely pertain to the infamous ship but also the era gone by.

That particular era was when the economy boomed and shipbuilding was still a major industry. Titanic Belfast was even of the same height as the infamous ship!

Inside the attraction, the galleries and exhibitions feature everything you’d ever want to know about the ship. It starts from the sketches, its conception in Belfast during the early 20th century.

It continues through the construction and launch, to the much-celebrated maiden voyage up to the tragic end.

Most of us may know the story already but in Titanic Belfast, it is told in a way that’s just a tad cheeky, fresh and insightful.

There are some special tours you can join in Titanic Belfast especially if you’re working around a strict schedule while in the city. The first is the Discovery Tour, which lasts for an hour and done inside and outside the building.

This tour is basically like tracing the steps of those who designed and constructed RMS Titanic. The other tour is the Afternoon Tea, where you can enjoy Sunday tea in a luxurious Titanic suite.

There’s also a replica of the staircase and jazz musicians playing while you sip your tea.

Hi, I’m Christine – a full-time traveler and career woman. Although I’m from the Philippines, my location independent career took me to over 60 countries for the past 12 years. I also lived in 4 continents – from the Caribbean, South East Asia, Africa and now in Europe. But despite living in several countries, my love for Ireland remains the same. A country that had been a part of my life since I was 14 because of my love for Irish music and bands. About Titanic Belfast

Birth of titanic belfast.

“We live in a new Northern Ireland...”

- Ian Pearson MP, Minister with responsibility for Enterprise, Trade and Investment, 2004

Over one hundred years after the birth of the world’s most famous ship, Titanic Belfast® has become a major new tourist attraction for Northern Ireland.

A Titanic / Maritime Belfast Signature Project

A Titanic /  Maritime Belfast Signature Project now known as Titanic Belfast®, was identified in Northern Ireland Tourism Board’s Strategic Framework for Action 2004-2007  as one of the five key tourism signature projects to enhance Northern Ireland's tourism offering.

The overall concept was translated into detailed plans and implemented by  Harcourt Developments , who enlisted the help of CHL Consulting, a specialist tourism destination development and research consultancy, and Event Communications, Europe's leading exhibition design group. The architecture of the attraction was designed by CivicArts with Todd Architects as the lead consultant / architect.

Constructed by Harcourt Developments, who broke ground in May 2009, the architecturally unique building opened to critical acclaim on 31 March 2012 in time for the centenary.
