I just love culturally diverse cities, and Amsterdam, the capital city of Holland, certainly doesn’t disappoint. Once you arrive here, there’s lots and lots to see and do. From the world-famous galleries and museums such as the Van Gogh Museum to the high street and boutique shopping, picturesque canals, and beautiful architecture, there is so much to absorb. There are even novelty attractions you can visit, such as Madame Tussauds, or if you enjoy the outdoors, then why not visit one of the many parks, such as Vondelpark, which is an enormous park in the south of the city.

Getting to Amsterdam is very straightforward, and there are many mini-cruise break options from the UK to Holland. I have chosen a selection of short cruises with a few various options; some of them can be taken regularly throughout the year, offering flexibility to the traveler, whilst others I have selected are more luxurious mini-cruises that restrict the traveler to a certain date. With plenty of options from the really cheap travel bargain to an expensive luxury cruise, the choice really is yours!

Wherever you stay, Amsterdam, or elsewhere, be sure to take advantage of our free upgrades, free breakfasts, and free perks at almost every luxury hotel around the world, including Four Seasons, Hyatt, Fairmont, InterContinental and more. Just book your stay via our luxury travel concierge .

DFDS are Europe’s Leading Ferry Operator 2012 to 2019 & the World’s Leading Ferry Operator 2011 to 2018! Their Newcastle to Amsterdam mini cruises depart daily from Newcastle and are perfect for weekend getaways and short city breaks, combining the leisure of ferry travel with the excitement of Holland’s cosmopolitan capital. The mini-cruise package is an amazing deal that includes the crossing itself, ensuite accommodation on board as well, as coach transfers from IJmuiden port to the city of Amsterdam, where you’ll have ample time to take in some local sights and attractions.

Two nights are spent on board one of the DFDS cruise ferries before exploring Amsterdam, Holland’s stunning capital. There’s lots on offer onboard, including two restaurants to dine in – the gourmet a la carte North Sea Bistro and the Explorers Kitchen Buffet, providing all-you-can-eat international cuisine. If you fancy a pre-dinner drink, then the Sky Bar is the place to go where you can enjoy a drink outdoors with panoramic sea views – you may even spot some local marine life! You can also take in a movie at the onboard cinema if you fancy or make a few purchases in the shop. If you are traveling with children, there is even a ‘kidz club’ with a ball pool, Lego and cartoons, a free children’s entertainer, and a games room for teenagers.

If you are wanting a longer stay in Amsterdam, then the DFDS Amsterdam Mini Cruise with a hotel break is just perfect. Sailing from Newcastle to the Netherlands overnight, you will enjoy a night on board the ferry and have the option to stay one, two, or three nights in Amsterdam at a carefully selected hotel (including breakfast) before sailing back overnight. You can choose from six hotels across Amsterdam, and there are several accommodation options ranging from budget to 4-star luxury hotels.

The main benefit of this break is that it gives you more time to explore Amsterdam, as well as the opportunity to enjoy the vibrant nightlife. Around Leidseplein, you will find many cultural and music centers, lots of cafes, some smaller theatres, restaurants, cinemas and a casino, whilst another bustling area of clubs, cafes and cinemas is Rembrandtplein where the square is surrounded by clubs and cafes. Again this cruise option is a great deal, especially for small groups, as the cost per person works out to be quite cheap and provides excellent value for money.

Offering a range of short cruises including to Holland and Belgium, the P&O overnight cruise to Amsterdam from Southampton is a leisurely mini cruise that includes an overnight port stay. This is another great value trip. Sailing overnight from Hull at around 10:30 am, this P&O Ferries 2 Night Mini Cruise Amsterdam allows you to spend the day ashore doing as you please in Amsterdam before sailing back again overnight. The cruise includes two nights of cabin accommodation on board the P&O cruise ferry and return city-center coach transfers. As this mini cruise sails between Hull – Rotterdam Europoort crossing, the transfer to Amsterdam itself will take a little longer. However, the plus side is that there is more time to explore Amsterdam when you are there.

The Queen Elizabeth is the world’s newest ocean liner, boasting en-suite stateroom accommodation, 24-hour room service, high-quality entertainment, and excellent facilities, including a fitness center and bowling green. The Cunard Big Band Ball to Amsterdam from Southampton is a fun-filled four-night round trip featuring live music and dance on board this ship whilst allowing guests to experience two full days exploring Amsterdam on land.

This nineties-themed cruise sets sail from Newcastle on the beautiful Marella Explorer and arrives back to Southampton. The ultimate guide to the DFDS Amsterdam Mini Cruise

I’ve just got back from a weekend break to Amsterdam with DFDS on one of their mini cruises . I’m a firm believer in making the journey as much of the adventure as the destination, which is why I was so excited to go on the mini cruise from Newcastle to Amsterdam.

Setting sail at 5pm on a Friday from Newcastle, we sailed overnight and woke up with the sun rising over the port. After a 40-minute transfer to Amsterdam, we spent the day exploring the beautiful city before heading back to the boat and returning, waking up on Sunday morning in Newcastle.

If you’re wanting to make the most of your weekends, and have a little luxury weekend adventure, then this could be the trip for you!

Newcastle to Amsterdam mini cruise at a glance

There are two ships that sail the Newcastle/Amsterdam route: King Seaways and Princess Seaways. For our trip, we were on the Kings Seaways which has two restaurants, a bar, a nightclub/entertainment area, a coffee shop, a children’s play area, a casino, an arcade and duty-free shopping.

There is a whole host of room types including sea views, dog-friendly rooms, premium cabins; commodore and commodore de luxe.

Commodore De Luxe Cabins

The commodore de luxe cabins are the most premium cabins on board – and boy do they come with a lot of extras!

Found on deck 10, these cabins have their own floor and you are greeted by members of the crew who take you to your room.

I couldn’t believe how spacious the rooms are in the commodore de luxe cabins. We had a twin cabin, and there was plenty of space for the two of us. On entering the room, you step into the living room area which has a sofa, chairs and table and dressing table. Then you had the two beds, built into the wall, and it felt very nautical. The bathroom on board had a shower, sink and toilet and was huge compared to the standard rooms (which was very welcome when seasickness hit!). Oh, and let’s not forget the two huge windows which give you the perfect sea view.

But Commodore De Luxe isn’t just about the gorgeous rooms…

You also have access to a private lounge where you can get drinks (soft drinks, wine, beer and prosecco), snacks, teas and coffees as well as a quiet place to sit and enjoy your journey. In the morning, you can also find pastries to keep you going before breakfast.

Speaking of breakfast, this is also included with commodore de luxe cabins. Rather than heading to Explorers Kitchen with the rest of the boat, everyone staying in the Commodore De Luxe cabins have their breakfast at the North Sea Bistro. There’s a whole range of hot food, pastries and cold meats and cheeses and it is delightful here, and a lot less hectic that the main Explorer’s Kitchen.

What to eat on DFDS Amsterdam mini cruise

There are two main places to eat on board the King Seaways boat for dinner and breakfast – North Sea Bistro and Explorers Kitchen.

North Sea Bistro vegetarian meal | DFDS mini cruise to Amsterdam

The North Sea Bistro

The North Sea Bistro is the a la carte restaurant on board and is absolutely beautiful.

It’s a small menu, however a great range of options from steak to seabass to oysters. I actually opted for the vegetarian option, Pommes Anna, which is a medley of thinly sliced potato, zucchini, carrot, beetroot and sweet potato served with pickled red onion and a portobello cream sauce. I can honestly say this exceeded expectations and was full of flavour.

My friend went for the steak, which looked equally as delicious, which came with a peppercorn sauce and potato wedges.

For dessert we both opted for the chocolate fondant which was delicious, but I was so sad that the center wasn’t as gooey as I would like!

The buffet on the DFDS mini cruise to Amsterdam

The Explorer’s Kitchen

The Explorer’s Kitchen is an all you can eat, around the world buffet. With a wide selection of foods from curries to salmon wellington to pizza – there truly is something for everyone here.

Sadly, when we ate here I was actually starting with sea sickness (it was a rough crossing coming back) so my appeitite was non exsistant at this point. However, I have actually done this sailing before, and usually eat at the buffet. From experince, it’s always a decent meal with lots of options.

The North Sea Bistro costs for 2 Courses is €38.95, and 3 Courses €42.95.

The Explorer’s Kitchen costs €25.95 for adults and you can be there for 1hr30.

Personally, I would choose the North Sea Bistro as it just felt a lot calmer and I really enjoyed my meal here.

Coffee Crew

As well as these two restaurants, there’s also a coffee shop on board which sells Starbucks Coffee and sweet treats.

What to do on a DFDS Amsterdam mini cruise

Selfie of Katie at sunrise on the DFDS mini cruise to Amsterdam

There is something for everyone onboard the DFDS mini cruise to Amsterd am. We didn’t actually get round to everything we wanted to do on board either – plenty to do on my next trip for sure! Here’s a run down of what’s available;

Bars & Live Music

There are plenty of places to sit down with a drink (can definitely recommend the cocktails!), soak up the atmosphere and be entertained.

The Compass Club is where you can dance to your hearts content however it was the Navigator’s Pub where we found ourselves as there was live acoustic music, which everyone was singing along too, and it was such a good atmosphere here.

At the Compass Club, you can also play bingo at 9pm. Sadly we missed this, but I can imagine it would be a lot of fun!

Arcade & Casino

On board there is a casino area for adults, and an arcade for all ages, which also included an air hockey table.

Children’s Scavenger Hunt

At 7pm on board, a scavenger hunt around the boat takes place for children, and they all looked like they were having a lot of fun! There’s also a mini soft play on board for them as well.

Showing some of the latest films, there are two screens on board showing films throughout the whole evening (I think the last screening took place at 11pm).

It costs around £8 per person and is a really fun way to spend the evening, especially if you don’t want to sit in the bars.

Duty Free Shopping

Of course there is duty free on board, and I always find that DFDS has the best prices compared to other ferry operators. I actually did buy some perfume on board because the price was so good compared to back on land.

As well as your classic duty free offerings, there is also a small clothes store on board too so if you run out of clothes, don’t worry because they’ve got you covered!

How long do you have in Amsterdam on the DFDS ferry from Newcastle to Amsterdam?

You dock in Holland at around 10am, and if you’re on the day mini cruise, I recommend queing early to get off, to make the most of your trip.

On this trip, we ended up in the very slow passport control queue, so we didn’t get into Amsterdam until just before 12pm. There are coaches back to the boat between 3pm and 4pm, and we headed to the coach around 3:45pm.

If you’re doing the mini cruise, the transfers between the boat and Amsterdam are included in the price. You can pay on the day as well.

Can you leave your belongings on board?

When you’re on one of the mini cruises, yes you can leave your belongings on board when you explore Amsterdam for the day. You have the same room on both journeys, so it’s essentially a floating hotel!

Overall thoughts on the DFDS mini cruise from Amsterdam to Newcastle

Overall, we had a great time on our mini cruise to Amsterdam.

I always think this is a great way to get a flavour for the city, and I’m sure you’ll want to return. If you’re wanting longer in Amsterdam, you can always book an extra night on land through DFDS to make this mini cruise into a whole holiday!

Even though seasickness hit (for the first time ever for me), I would defintely travel again. This was my 6th DFDS cruise to Amsterdam, and every time we have a great time. There is always a great level of service, and the boat is always clean and in good condition.

Amsterdam mini cruise: what happens and is it worth it? our review

An Amsterdam mini cruise is a really popular way to see the European city from the UK and have a break from the norm without sacrificing too much holiday time from work.

Amsterdam is a wonderful city to spend some time in but are mini cruises a good way to explore? And what happens on a mini cruise? I’m aiming to answer all your questions here!

Before we sailed on a Newcastle to Amsterdam mini cruise we had no idea about what it would be like and we struggled to find any information or reviews about the trip.

We travelled with our kids, who were young teens at the time but many people do the trip with younger kids, as a couple or even solo!

Best mini cruise to Amsterdam – DFDS

This is the mini cruise that we went on and can recommend. It’s a really great way to see Amsterdam as a short day trip from the UK!

Amsterdam mini cruise

Who runs mini cruises to Amsterdam? There are currently two options if you fancy a mini cruise: DFDS – Sails from Newcastle to Amsterdam (this is the one we did) P&O Ferries – Sails from Hull to Rotterdam

What is a mini cruise?

Sunset on mini cruise to Amsterdam

  • A mini cruise is basically a 2 night ‘cruise’ where you sail late on the first day, sleeping overnight on the boat and arriving at your destination in the morning.
  • You then get transferred to the city in the morning (Amsterdam in this case) for a day trip before returning to the ship and having a night on the boat returning.
  • You arrive back on the third day in the morning.

DFDS do a couple of different mini cruises – you can do one like we did from Newcastle to Amsterdam (and vice versa) or there’s also one that goes from Denmark to Norway (one to try at another date when we’re travelling around Europe again!). They also used to do one from the UK to Norway but I don’t think that one is currently running.

P&O Ferries also do a very similar crossing but it’s from Hull to Rotterdam . They still transfer you to Amsterdam and that’s the destination for the cruise.

How long is an Amsterdam mini cruise?

Typically the cruise lasts 3 days and 2 nights. You spend the first evening on board the ship, arrive at your destination in the morning to spend the day and then sail back on the 2nd evening.

Is a mini cruise expensive?

Cruising as a term tends to conjure up images and feelings of an expensive trip. So is the mini cruise to Amsterdam expensive?

Currently, in 2022, the headline fares are around £40 per person for P&O and £75 per person for DFDS. Your final price is going to depend on what cabin you choose.

There are often deals to be had when booking the mini cruise with DFDS (and I imagine P&O). We managed to find a 2 for 1 offer which made our whole trip with the most basic cabin come in at around £120 for 4 people.

This gave us a super basic cabin (more on that below) for two nights and coach transfers for us all to Amsterdam. You can upgrade to better cabins should you want and if you can I would definitely recommend it.

On board, as probably expected, it’s a little more expensive than your average restaurant or shop. As is also probably expected, we were way too tight to be spending our cash on board so I can’t unfortunately comment on the quality of the restaurants – we took food with us!

I did see that breakfast was around €15 per adult so if you want to eat on board and not bring food with you make sure to budget accordingly.

What’s it like on board?

As I said before, we didn’t eat in the restaurant and we also didn’t partake in any bar entertainment either. (Although I’d say this wasn’t the best idea – as I mention below, it’s a cruise, don’t hole yourself up in your cabin with rubbish food. Go enjoy yourself!)

There was a cinema on board which was about €8 each, so not too dissimilar to on land and we did consider that if the film we wanted was showing on the way back but unfortunately it wasn’t so we didn’t. So if you see a showing you like, watch it, it might not be on the return journey!

Inside cabins on DFDS mini cruise to Amsterdam

The cabin that we had was very basic but did have everything you needed with a small en suite shower and toilet. You also get towels too so no need to bring those either.

The cabins are a little bit small with four people in them, especially when the upper bunks are down, but it wasn’t too bad really. Of course our kids were nearly grown so it was like having 4 adults in there.

One issue that we had with the cabins were that they were incredibly hot. We did wonder at one point whether they maybe didn’t want you too comfy in the cabins and wanted you to be out spending in the bars! It was like that both ways and just spoiled what would have been a quite enjoyable time otherwise.

Tip – make sure you have plenty of drinks with you. It’ll make the hot cabins a bit better.

Can you leave your belongings on the ferry?

One thing we wondered about and were a little worried about was whether we could leave our belongings on the ship while on the day trip – if you’re also worried, don’t be.

You keep the same cabin on the outward and inward legs so you can leave whatever you need to on board.

(This was correct when we did the trip – might be worth confirming with the ferry company if it’s a concern for you)

How long do you get in Amsterdam on the mini cruise?

Ok, this is quite a big and common question – how long do you get there? It might vary due to the company and any traffic but in general:

You get about 4 and a half hours in the city of Amsterdam on the mini cruise.

Chips and mayonnaise in Amsterdam

What to do in Amsterdam on a mini cruise?

Your time is going to be limited so bear that in mind when choosing what to do. Here are some ideas of places to go that can be done in the time you have. Unfortunately trips to tulip field and windmills like Kinderdijk will have to wait – you won’t have time.

I highly recommend getting tickets in advance if you can – Amsterdam can be busy!

  • Canal cruise
  • Van Gogh Museum
  • Ann Frank Museum or walking tour
  • Heineken Experience
  • Rijksmuseum
  • Madame Tussauds

What happens on the day trip?

You arrive in the Netherlands at about 9am at a place called IJmuiden which is around a 45 minute drive from the centre of Amsterdam.

After waiting for the car passengers to depart it’s the foot passengers turn to go through passport control. It was fine and fairly quick on the Amsterdam side but returning to Newcastle took forever so something to think about if you’re doing the opposite journey.

The coaches are waiting to take you in to the city and once full they head off, dropping you outside a hotel just opposite the train station so perfect for seeing the old town or getting on a canal cruise.

We probably arrived in Amsterdam at around 10.30am – 11am ish which gave us about 4 and a half hours before we got picked up.

It definitely didn’t seem enough to enjoy all there is in Amsterdam, but for us, as it was our first trip to the city it was nice enough to get a feel for it and wander round.

I really wanted to do some of the museums in Amsterdam and it’s really not enough time for doing that and exploring – but perhaps next time we’ll be able to stay longer!  There are some really great kids museums in the Netherlands so definitely one to return for!

We were lucky and had a dry day to wander around – it would have been a different story if it was raining, but if you’re worried about that make sure you have some activities planned to keep you dry.

amsterdam canal and bike

Is a mini cruise worth it?

So the main question would be, is it worth it overall?

We all really enjoyed our time away and for what we paid I think it was definitely worth it.

My tips to make the most of the mini cruise to Europe

If I was to do the cruise again here would be my tips to make the most of the day:

  • if possible, upgrade the cabin so you’re feeling fresh and so that the cruise section of the trip is part of the experience
  • I’d enjoy the restaurants on board more and the entertainment – honestly we used to be on such a budget we’d scrimp everywhere which isn’t always advisable. I’d say that while you can do that, since the mini cruise is the bulk of your time try to enjoy it!
  • I’d consider getting some skip the line tickets for the museums I was interested in.
  • I’d probably book in advance a trip on the canals .
  • I’d definitely get a guide book or check in advance what we should do and where we should eat – we weren’t really prepared and so just wandered round soaking up the city. We were lucky the day was dry!

Our mini cruise from Newcastle to Amsterdam is our most popular break, and it’s easy to see why. It’s the perfect way to take a short break to one of the most fascinating cities in Europe , as well as enjoying a cruise experience onboard our comfortable, modern ships.

But what exactly is a mini cruise? And what can you expect if you book one? Well, in this blog we’ll take you through the trip from boarding to bed, to breakfast and back again.

All aboard!

Our ferry departs from the port in North Shields , near Newcastle, every evening at 5pm, so be sure to leave yourself plenty of time to check in and don’t forget your passport ! We recommend turning up at least 90 minutes before departure, but even earlier if you have any special requirements, and please let us know in advance if you do.

Not to worry though, as you can grab something to eat at our port café-bar , pick up a couple travel items at the shop or play on the arcade games. Royal Quays outlet is also just up the road, about 10 minutes away.

At check-in, you’ll be able to pre-purchase meals (and save compared to onboard prices), upgrade your cabin and add other extras if you wish. So if you’re looking for a way to make your mini cruise extra special, then look no further.

Once you’ve checked in you will pass through security and you’ll be able to board.

Cosy Cabins

Once you’ve boarded, you’ll be directed to your cabin where you can drop your luggage. We have a range of different cabins , all in different sizes and with different capacities, so no matter what your budget, and how many are travelling, we’ll have something for you. Our cabins range from 2-bed to 5-bed, plus we have standard inside, sea view and economy options, all with en suite facilities.

2 Berth Cabin

However, we know some of you will be thinking about taking a more luxurious trip, so that’s why we also offer premium Commodore and Commodore De Luxe cabins which include a TV, seating areas, a complimentary minibar and more. Commodore De Luxe customers will also get entry to the Commodore Lounge , where you can enjoy snacks, drinks and prosecco as you sail. Now that’s what we call sailing in style!

Eat, Drink and be Merry

Our ferries aren’t just a means of transport. At DFDS we believe that your journey should be every bit as fun as the time you spend in your destination, so that’s why we’ve packed our ships full with facilities and amenities to ensure you have a pleasant and enjoyable crossing.

You’ll find 4 restaurants to choose from, with food suitable for even the pickiest eaters. For a taste of the Mediterranean, head to Little Italy and choose from a range of pizza and pasta dishes suitable for all the family. The Blue Riband à la carte is a little bit posher, but no less accessible, with meat and poultry dishes, plus meals suitable for vegetarians. Our Explorers Steakhouse is one of our most talked-about dining experiences, serving up juicy, succulent steaks and sides still-sizzling to you.

7 Seas

Our most popular restaurant, however, is the 7 Seas all-you-can-eat buffet . So if you’re looking to stuff yourself silly on your journey, then look no further. You’ll have a choice of over 80 dishes from all over the world, plus delicious desserts and family-friendly meals too, so there’s no need to worry about finding something you’ll love.

Entertainment

Once you’ve had your fill of the delicious food onboard, we’re sure you’ll want to get your holiday started properly, and that’s why our ships are packed with things to do for travellers of all ages!

If you’re travelling with your family, then your kids will love the Kidz’ Club and the children’s entertainer, or our arcade games area. We also have shops onboard selling fashion, fragrance, toys, gifts and souvenirs , where you can spend some of your holiday money and indulge yourself in some retail therapy.

Our onboard cinema plays the latest Hollywood blockbusters and is perfect for couples or families, so you can grab a bag of popcorn and enjoy a thriller, a comedy or something a little bit more romantic.

Mermaid Skybar

For the grown-ups, we have a number of onboard bars where you can relax and grab a beer, sip a cocktail or a glass or two of fine wine. Our Columbus Club hosts live music and entertainment from a house band, acoustic troubadour and entertainer, and then later on you can dance the night away before you head back to your cabin for a good night’s sleep.

The most important meal of the day…

Those of you sensible enough to book a breakfast, and disciplined enough to get up early, before docking at 9.30am, can enjoy the delights of our breakfast buffet . With hot and cold breakfast options, including everything you’ll need to make yourself a full English, as well as pastries, fruit, cereal and plenty more.

Once you’ve disembarked, you’ll be directed to a number of transfer coaches which will take you from our port in IJmuiden to Amsterdam , approximately 40 minutes away, and then the day is yours to do with as you please!

Amazing Amsterdam

You’ll have anything up to 5 hours in Amsterdam, so more than long enough to explore but short enough that you won’t be left hanging around, and with so much to do in the Dutch capital, the hardest thing will be deciding on what you pack into your day.

Amsterdam was home to some of the most famous artists in history, and now is home to some of Europe’s foremost art museums, such as the Rijksmuseum with its collection of Rembrandt works and the Van Gogh Museum , hosting the great eponymous artist’s most brilliant masterpieces.

Take a cruise through the city’s canals and in just an hour you can see 100 of the city’s highlights . It’s a great way to get to know the city if it’s your first time, or to see the sights in an entirely new way if you’ve been before.

The Dutch capital is also a great shopping destination, with areas such as the 9 Streets including everything from boutiques to brands, and is well-stocked for bars and restaurants as well as Brown Cafés , similar to English pubs, and Grand Cafés , which are a little more ornate, and a great place to people-watch.

Between 3 and 4pm, our coaches will arrive in Amsterdam to pick you up. Your driver will have told you where to report back to when you first arrived in Amsterdam in the morning. These coaches will whisk you back to port so you can enjoy another night onboard, before arriving back in North Shields at 9am the next morning.

Whew, what a fun, non-stop trip!

Themed Mini Cruises

Our mini cruise is our most popular short break, and our themed mini cruises are another way to enjoy a short break to Amsterdam with a cruise experience.

Our North Sea Sounds music cruises include concerts from world-famous music artists and DJs. In the past we’ve welcomed ABC, The Christians, the Craig Charles Funk & Soul Show, Smoove & Turrell and plenty more onboard to entertain our customers as they sail.

If you’re an animal lover then our Amsterdam Artis Zoo mini cruise is ideal for you. You’ll spend a day at one of Europe’s oldest and most well-renowned zoos, with hundreds of animals of all species and types to discover. Alternatively, our Marine Wildlife mini cruise – in association with dolphin and whale charity ORCA – will give you an education on the animals it’s possible to see from the deck of our ship, including dolphins, whales, birds and more.

Our Halloween cruise is enormously popular, with a hotly-contested fancy dress competition and other themed fun, while our New Year’s Eve mini cruise includes 3 nights onboard, plus an open bar on New Year’s Eve, and the chance to see the famous Amsterdam fireworks at midnight from the deck!

So if all of this has got you in the mood for a quick jaunt to the Dutch capital, then be sure to head to our website for more information, ideas and inspiration!

Absolute madness that you can sail from North Shields to Amsterdam, I have obviously been aware of it but it keeps slipping from my mind! I really need to get on broad (tee hee ... funny!) with this as it's such a wasted opportunity not to go! I'm seriously impressed with the look of the boat, I had no idea there'd be so much on board. I thought it'd just be a large boat with a little coffee area and that was about it! Love that there's a cinema! Simon and I have often talked about maybe doing a cruise one day but I'm a little nervous as I can get a bit sea sick on small boats and am not sure how I'd do on a larger boat. I'm thinking maybe we should mini cruise to Amsterdam as a trial run! Chloe x newgirlintoon.co.uk

amsterdam zoo mini cruise

We took travel sickness tablets as a precaution before our trip but they were probably not needed as our trip was very smooth! Go for it - they have a deal on at the moment from £49 pp or you can try a day sailing for their 20th Anniversary in May or a day sailing to see the Sunderland air show in July xx

amsterdam zoo mini cruise

That looks lovely, and how great to have a mini cruise to Amsterdam on your doorstep. It looks a great ship and so much on board. Am off to Amsterdam in July so looking forward to reading about the zoo too.

It's fab that it's on our doorstep as more often than not these things are down South! We had a lovely time - zoo post coming up at the start of next week....

amsterdam zoo mini cruise

It sounds like you had a great trip. Your photos tell the story beautifully along with your writing. I totally relate to soft play induced hyperactivity too.

What is it with soft play? My friends love them and are always asking to meet there but I can't think of anything worse! The kids do love it though. We had a fantastic trip, thank you xx

I've applied to be in their advertisement too! Would love to try the newcastle to amsterdam route too! Although me and hubby would have to go on the top bunks! 5 berth cabins are great though! #traveltales

Yes I was given the middle bunk! Wasn't as bad as I thought although I did bang my head a few times!

I remember going on an overnight cruise to Amsterdam when I was in my 20s but we were cheapskates and just paid for reclining chairs! Your cruise certainly looks more comfortable. We went to Amsterdam a couple of years back with the kids and really enjoyed Artis Zoo (although it poured with rain). Hope you had a good time too.

Oh dear - I can't imagine travelling overnight on just a reclining chair! The cabins are far more comfortable. The same thing happened to us at Barcelona zoo - gorgeous weather all week and then poured with rain on the day of our trip! We still had a good day though xx

amsterdam zoo mini cruise

Sounds brilliant. The perfect getaway when you have kids to keep happy - yours look thorougly excited and entertained. The cabin is a decent size too. Tx

Yes I was really impressed with the cabin size as honestly only expected a postage stamp. We had a great trip xx

amsterdam zoo mini cruise

Hey that looks great! My three would love the triple bunk!! If only I didn't get sea sick I'd be thinking about it xx

We were very lucky with a smooth crossing - you didn't even feel like you were moving. I have heard it's not always like this though so think you need to choose the right time of year if you suffer xx

amsterdam zoo mini cruise

Great post and good to here your trip started off so well. I'm so orientated to the South and ferries hoping across the channel, I'd never thought of them going from North Shields.

It's fab that we have this option up here - such an easy way to travel :D

We went on a similar trip from Hull before we had the kids and really enjoyed it. We have recently looked into taking the kids on this trips from North Shields, the 5 berth cabins are ideal for us too. Looking forward to you next couple of blogs on days two and three. :-)

I would highly recommend - 5 berth cabins are a huge plus point for us as I hate having to split our family into two rooms!

I have often wondered what a DFDS cruise would be like for a family when I've seen the ads on TV. Your blog is great and I'm looking forward to reading your next instalments :)

Thanks Tracey - I hope it has given you some insight xx

What fun! I know my kids would love it. The food looks lovely too. I've had some not to nice cruise ship food so that has always put me off a cruise with kids a little but it looks nice. The Kids Club looks pretty great as well.

Yeah the food was fab and of very good quality - I do sometimes moan that the children have far too many chicken nuggets for my liking but it's there holiday too and they love them!

This looks like a fantastic way to start a mini-break. It's good that a lot of the travel time's taken up with sleeping - takes away the need to find a hotel at your destination!

That is exactly it - no time wasted which is fab - you are only in Amsterdam for 4-5 hours but you really make the most of your time x

Wow, ok, so ferries - they've improved a bit since the last time I was on one, haha. Ok, admittedly that was a million years ago, but I'm super impressed at the cinema and the steak house on board, all the same! I've always ruled overnight ferries out till now - which is odd really because I wouldn't blink an eye about going on a cruise ship - I normally opt for flying or the Eurostar instead, but clearly I'm going to have to look into this further because things have quite obviously moved on a LOT since the last time I sailed.

Yeah steakhouse, cinema, cocktails....what more could you ask for :-) We had a fab time on board and the whole time felt like we were on holiday - the ship was so much more than a means of travelling from A-B.

amsterdam zoo mini cruise

I have never even thought of going on the mini cruise with children as i always thought it would just be full of stag and hen parties. It is nice to hear there was so much for children to do onboard x

This sounds like such a great idea and I never really thought about mini cruises like these. Definitely a nice relaxing way to see somewhere new!

Lovely write up, I think the mini cruises to Amsterdam are brilliant, so affordable and theres plenty to do on board xxx

I love mini cruises like these! I have done one from Hull to Bruges and it was great and brilliant that they are at such an affordable price! Can't wait to see what you got up to in Amsterdam xo http://rachelnicole.co.uk/

What a fantastic review. I've been toying with the idea of going on a cruise for a while now, as there seems to be so much to do onboard - especially for kids, which you have just illustrated perfectly. I am suprised by the size of the cabin, too. I really thought it would have been more poky. The food looks delicious - steak and chips are my favourite. It's definitely a nice weekend treat so look forward to reading more! Thanks so much for linking up with #MondayEscapes x

I was just looking for info about plug sockets and stuff because I'm taking Abigail for her birthday present and who should I google upon but lovely you! Now I need to go and search for my blooming plug though, last seen disembarking a ship in Barcelona, wish me luck!!

Amsterdam city break: a 3-night cruise from London Tilbury

When it comes to quick getaways, a mini cruise  from London Tilbury to Amsterdam offers an ideal balance of relaxation, exploration, and culture. This 3-night city break aboard the Ambience ship combines the convenience of a cruise with the allure of one of Europe’s most vibrant cities—Amsterdam. Whether you’re a history buff, art enthusiast, or simply looking for a romantic escape, this short cruise gives you a taste of the Dutch capital, with plenty of time to soak in its famous canals, world-class museums, and charming neighborhoods.

Overview of the cruise experience

The ship: ambience.

Let’s start with your home away from home: the Ambience. This modern cruise ship is designed with comfort in mind, making it the perfect setting for a stress-free break. With spacious cabins, multiple dining options, and entertainment to suit all tastes, you’ll find plenty to enjoy onboard during your voyage. Think of it as a floating hotel—one that delivers you directly to the heart of Amsterdam. Whether you spend your time lounging by the pool, catching a live show, or enjoying a delicious meal, Ambience offers something for every type of traveler.

Departure from London Tilbury

Your journey begins at the port of London Tilbury. Conveniently located just outside London, this departure point is easily accessible by car or public transport. As the ship sets sail down the Thames, you’ll leave the hustle of the city behind, trading it for the gentle sway of the sea. The ship’s decks offer panoramic views of the British coastline, and as you settle into your cabin, you can feel the anticipation of arriving in Amsterdam build.

Exploring Amsterdam: What to expect over two days

Arrival in amsterdam: first impressions.

On the morning of October 25, 2024, you’ll wake up to the sights and sounds of Amsterdam. The ship docks near the city center, so you’ll be just a short walk or tram ride away from the action. Amsterdam’s charm is immediate—narrow cobbled streets, bicycles whizzing by, and its famous canals reflecting rows of 17th-century merchant houses. It’s a city that effortlessly blends history with modern energy, and you’ll have two full days to explore its many treasures.

Day one in Amsterdam: Canal cruise and history

  • Morning: Start your adventure with a canal cruise. It’s arguably the best way to get acquainted with Amsterdam’s layout and history. As you float along the waterways, you’ll pass by picturesque bridges, charming houseboats, and iconic landmarks like the Westerkerk and the Anne Frank House.
  • Midday: No trip to Amsterdam is complete without visiting the Anne Frank House. This powerful museum offers a glimpse into the life of Anne Frank, a Jewish girl who hid from the Nazis during WWII. The site is small but profound, giving visitors a deeper understanding of Amsterdam’s history during a tumultuous time.
  • Afternoon: Take a stroll through the Jordaan district, a neighborhood known for its quiet streets and quaint shops. This area is perfect for a leisurely afternoon of window shopping or grabbing a coffee at a traditional Dutch café. Whether you’re picking up a souvenir or just soaking in the atmosphere, Jordaan will give you a feel for the local vibe.
  • Evening: Cap off your first day with a delicious dinner at one of Amsterdam’s many restaurants. Café de Jaren is a great option for those seeking canal views, while local favorites like Moeders serve up traditional Dutch comfort food like stamppot (a hearty mashed potato dish) and poffertjes (tiny Dutch pancakes). You’ll feel like a local as you enjoy your meal alongside the city’s twinkling canals.

Day two in Amsterdam: Art, culture, and nature

  • Morning: Start your second day with a visit to the Van Gogh Museum, home to the largest collection of Van Gogh’s works. This museum offers a deep dive into the life and artistry of one of the world’s most famous painters, showcasing masterpieces like Sunflowers and The Bedroom. Be sure to book your tickets in advance to skip the line.
  • Midday: A short walk away is the Rijksmuseum, a treasure trove of Dutch art and history. Its vast collection includes works by Rembrandt, Vermeer, and other Golden Age painters, as well as a fascinating display of artifacts detailing Amsterdam’s past. You could easily spend a few hours here, but if you’re short on time, be sure to visit Rembrandt’s The Night Watch—a true masterpiece.
  • Afternoon: After immersing yourself in art, take a break and head to Vondelpark. This lush, green space is Amsterdam’s answer to Central Park, offering a peaceful retreat from the bustling city. Rent a bike and pedal through the park like a local, or simply enjoy a leisurely walk among the trees. It’s the perfect spot to relax before the evening.
  • Evening: If you’re looking for a more casual dining experience, explore the trendy De Pijp neighborhood. This vibrant area is known for its eclectic eateries and laid-back vibe. From cozy tapas bars to gourmet burger joints, De Pijp has something for every taste. Alternatively, opt for a canal-side dinner, where you can enjoy the city’s serene evening views one last time.

Optional excursions or hidden gems

  • For those seeking a more offbeat experience, a visit to the NDSM Wharf is a must. This industrial area turned creative hub is home to street art, quirky cafés, and even a few pop-up markets. It’s a side of Amsterdam many tourists miss but offers a glimpse into the city’s thriving arts scene.
  • Another hidden gem is the Albert Cuyp Market, one of the city’s oldest and largest markets. Here you can sample Dutch street food like stroopwafels (syrup-filled waffles) and haring (raw herring), and browse stalls selling everything from fresh flowers to handmade goods.

Returning to London Tilbury

Departure from amsterdam (day 4 – october 27, 2024).

On the morning of your departure, enjoy a final breakfast onboard while gazing at Amsterdam’s iconic canals. There’s a sense of satisfaction knowing you’ve explored a city full of history, art, and culture. As the ship sets sail back to London Tilbury, you can unwind and reflect on the highlights of your Amsterdam city break.

The journey home

The journey back to London is a peaceful one. The ship offers plenty of entertainment options—perhaps you’ll catch a live show, relax by the pool, or simply enjoy the sea views. As you arrive in London Tilbury, you’ll disembark with new memories and a sense of accomplishment, having experienced the best of Amsterdam in just a few short days.

Practical information for travelers

How to prepare for your cruise.

  • Travel documents: Ensure you have your passport, cruise tickets, and any necessary visas.
  • Packing tips: Amsterdam can be chilly in late October, so pack layers and a waterproof jacket. Don’t forget comfortable walking shoes for exploring the city’s cobblestone streets.
  • Currency: Amsterdam uses the Euro, but credit cards are widely accepted. However, having some cash on hand for smaller purchases or markets is a good idea.
  • Getting around: Amsterdam is a compact city, and many attractions are within walking distance. Public transport, including trams and buses, is reliable and easy to navigate. For a truly local experience, consider renting a bike.
