This full-day bus tour packs in an impressive number of London’s must-see sights, with free time to explore at each stop. We boarded at Victoria Coach Station before ambling through Westminster, getting up-close views of honey-hued Parliament Square – framed by the Houses of Parliament , Big Ben and Westminster Abbey – from the bus. From there it was on to St. Paul’s Cathedral , where we were given a guided tour of this chandelier-bedecked marvel as our English guide shared intriguing facts about its history. Next up was Buckingham Palace, where our guide timed it so we’d catch the changing of the guard. Our next stop was the Tower of London , where we had a brief lunch break and guided orientation before having a couple of hours to roam freely. Most of the tour group made an immediate beeline for the crown jewels, eyes goggling at the impressive collection of diamond encrusted crowns and gold chalices. We rounded off the day with a cruise along the Thames. The tour ended at the London Eye , where several in the group had opted for an add-on whirl on the wheel, and a few left for cream tea at Harrod’s (two activities included in the upgraded ticket option).

Tours run daily from 7:45 a.m. to around 4:30 p.m. It’s worth noting the changing of the guard only takes place on Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday, so if you’re hoping to catch it, book the tour for one of those days (and while guides will do their best to accommodate seeing the changing of the guard, there’s never a guarantee).

You’ll be on your feet a fair amount, so it's best to wear comfy shoes . You'll also want to pack light – in the morning, you can leave things on the bus, but when you get off at the Tower of London, you’ll need to take everything with you, as the rest of the tour is on foot and by boat. Also, you'll have to queue a bit for the crown jewels, but it’s worth the wait!

Despite having grown up in and around the city, I gleaned plenty of new historical facts myself, and spotted things I’d never noticed before (including the building that served as Gringotts Wizarding Bank in the "Harry Potter" movies).

“Westminster” is the iconic area of London that you might have seen on television or on the news – think Big Ben, the House of Parliament, the River Thames, the Churchill War Rooms.

If someone came to me and said they could only do one tour and they wanted to see “London,” this would be it – this is the London of your dreams and on your postcards.

The glorious thing about this walking tour of Westminster is that it also includes a guided tour around the Churchill War Rooms.

If you’re not familiar with the Churchill War Rooms , this is where Winston Churchill and top members of the British government hid out and led strategy for World War II – now, of course, it is well known in London where they are, but at the time they were essentially bunkers under Westminster.

Many of the artifacts and rooms have been preserved in their original states, and it’s a really incredible historically preserved and interactive museum.

You can book tickets to Churchill War Rooms separately from this tour, but when you combine the ticket prices and the cost of walking tours, you’re getting more for your money when combining it, and you’ll also have a great appreciation for how the Churchill War Rooms fit into the overall landscape of Westminster by seeing some sites around the local area as well.

3. Jack the Ripper Walking Tour: one of the best London tours

The classic horror story of Jack the Ripper and his London murders still permeates the culture of today’s East End – at least if you believe the guides on this Jack the Ripper Walking Tour !

There are a ton of Jack the Ripper Walking tours in London, but this is my favorite as I think you get really good value for the price and it’s one of the best tours in London. 

You’ll learn the story of this infamous criminal, hear the stories of how his victims fell into his traps, and see the spots where he murdered some of his most infamous victims.

This tour is not for small children who would be easily scared, but if you like a little bit of gore with your London visit, this is it.

4. Chelsea Football Club Tour: among the best tours in London

Chelsea Football Club does the BEST walking tours for visitors who are interested in learning more about English football (what Americans call soccer).

You don’t have to be a Chelsea fan to enjoy this tour (though of course it’s welcomed), as anyone will appreciate the information and sites you get to see.

The tour lasts about an hour and takes you to areas that normally only the players and press get to access.

From the press desk to the home locker room to the field itself, you’ll learn what makes one of the greatest football stadiums in the world so popular.

This is an excellent choice for any London visitors interested in sports, and it’s short enough that you can easily fit it into any visit.

While you can see Shakespeare’s Globe from the inside while booking tickets to see a show, the only way to really get an understanding for this famous structure is to take this guided tour .

Shakespeare’s Globe is such an iconic part of London and noticeable as soon as you head to the river, and it really boggles the mind that this is the place (well, the faithfully recreated place) that he wrote his plays to be performed in.

Any theatre lovers should make sure to add this to their London list .

At about 90 minutes and with a very central location, you can fit this into your visit and you’ll leave having a new awe and appreciation for the world of Shakespeare.

Whether you’re a fan of the Beatles, Hendrix, or the many other names that have come out of the London Rock ‘n’ Roll scene, this walking tour will talk you past the iconic places that have been visited, played at, or lived in by some of the world’s most famous musicians.

One of the most shocking things for me to learn when I first moved to London was that the double decker buses weren’t just tourist buses!

They were real ones!

Commuters and Londoners use double decker buses to get around London on the daily.

However, these aren’t going to point out any sites for you and you’ll probably be squashed in with a million people, so to guarantee a comfy seat and some guided narration of the sites around you, book yourself onto a London bus tour for visitors that still take advantage of the double decker layout.

9. Night-time Open Top Bus Tour: one of the best guided tours London

I am such a fan of London at night .

It’s really enchanting and magical and just looks so much different than the daytime.

This open top bus tour takes places at night and includes 90 minutes of a live guide showing you around the city from an open-top bus.

In my opinion, this is a must-do.

You’ll also see some iconic London attractions at night, such as Tower Bridge, the Tower of London , Big Ben and more.

You’ll have a full map that tells you all of the bus lines, along with narration as you go from place to place. This makes it a great thing to do in London with kids as you don’t have to worry about navigating.

You can also buy multiple day tickets so you can use these are your way to get around primarily as they hit all of the major London attractions and visitor areas.

There are quite a few bus companies nowadays who operate hop-on and hop-off bus tours, but these are my pick and also the highest rated from other visitors so make sure to plan in advance and not just get swept up into some random bus that someone on the street offers you access to!

11. Comedy Horror Show: London Ghost Bus Tour

Who doesn’t love a ghost tour ?

Of course because this is London, there has to be a sense of humor in it as well.

For an evening activity that will keep the whole family entertained, enjoy this comedy horror show that takes you to some of the spookiest places in London (from the safety of your bus, of course, scaredy cats) and gives you some gory details about some of the street’s seedy pasts.

I love this bus tour for its uniqueness – you can find ghost tours and you can find comedy shows, but combining them makes for a killer (GET IT?!) combination and I think it’s a must do.

There are also live actors on board and a backstory to go with the bus, so get ready for a really immersive experience that will also teach you something at the same time.

Beatles fans, listen up!

Your bus tour is here , it’s awesome, and it’s taking you to see all of the places in London that have been touched, walked over, lived in or looked at by the famous music group.

London is the second best place to Liverpool to experience Beatle mania, so if you can’t make it to Liverpool during your time in the UK, you must book onto this amazing London tour to learn the history behind the Beatles in London and see some of the most popular places (Abbey Road is waiting for you) for yourself.

London Pride 2024: the biggest and best events in the capital this weekend

As another Pride month draws to a close, London is gearing up for its biggest party yet – the Pride London parade. Taking place on June 29, thousands are expected to join the loud, proud march through central London. But fortunately for the late-night party lovers (or indeed those looking to combine their festivities with a little culture along the way) that’s only the start of the fun on offer.

From sleepovers at London Zoo and fascinating exhibitions and gallery tours focused on LGBTQ+ culture to some of the biggest afterparties imaginable, here are our top picks for where to celebrate this weekend. 

London Zoo Sleepover

What better way to kick off your Pride than… er, sleeping over in London Zoo? The wild animal emporium is hosting a weekender of rainbow crafts with plenty of chance to learn about the ways that queerness pops up in the natural world.

Pride in London Parade

The biggest Pride bonanza of the bunch, around 35,000 people are expected to march in London’s biggest LGBTQ+ parade. Expect ludicrously decorated floats galore, all packed with drag acts, speakers blasting pop bangers, and glitter stuck in all of your clothes for at least two weeks afterwards.

LGBTQIA+ Tours at the Tate

Drawing on their massive collection of classic pieces, Tate Modern and Tate Britain both run dedicated LGBTQ+ tours throughout the whole summer, helping visitors to learn more about art “through the lens of gender identity and sexuality”.

Faggamuffin Bloc Party Presents: Carnival Pride

After closing out Pride London’s Golden Square party earlier in the day, Faggamuffin head over to Shoreditch’s Village Underground for a huge after party. A celebration of the QTBIPOC community and carnival and soundsystem culture, it goes right through until 5am.

London drag king collective Pecs Boys, who celebrated their 10th birthday last year, are throwing a suitably majestic pride party in Hackney filled with all manner of raunchy performances from their talented troupe. “Bin off pink-washed corporate pride and come celebrate radical queerness in all its messy glory with the Pecs boys,” they say. 10 Unmissable London Attractions for First-Time Visitors

There’s enough to see and do in London that even several weeks in the city would barely touch the sides, but for first-time visitors there are a number of attractions that you won’t want to miss.

When it comes to planning your time in the Big Smoke, it can be hard to see the wood from the trees, but for those coming for the first time, there are several classic tourist sights that would make your trip feel incomplete were they omitted from your itinerary. To help navigate this minefield, we’ve done some of the legwork by choosing 10 must-see attractions. We’ve made our selection as broad as possible to include both indoor and outdoor venues, including a couple of museums, a royal park and a historic open-air market. We’ve also made sure to feature some free options, too, since just a few days in London can hit you hard in the pocket. Here’s our pick below.

Buckingham Palace

The official London residence of His Majesty The King, Buckingham Palace is one of the capital’s most iconic landmarks and one of the few remaining working royal palaces in the world today. Many come to admire the attraction from outside its golden gates, timing their visit to coincide with the famous Changing of the Guard which sees soldiers marching to the palace several times a week. For a more immersive experience, there are also daily self-guided tours which allow visitors to explore the palace’s lavishly furnished State Rooms, as well as its magnificent Grand Staircase and several prestigious pieces of fine art.

Another instantly recognisable London landmark, Big Ben is technically the name given to the huge bell inside the clock tower, but is commonly used in reference to the tower itself, which comprises part of the Houses of Parliament – the heart of the UK’s political decision-making for over 900 years. The riverside attraction can be seen from miles around and is particularly popular as a backdrop for photos from one of the nearby bridges spanning the River Thames. It’s also possible to enter Big Ben by booking a guided tour that takes visitors up 334 stairs to see the clock mechanism room, behind the four clock dials and the Belfry, where the famous bell is located.

Tower of London

Dating back to the 1070s when it was built by William the Conqueror during the Norman Conquest, the Tower of London on the north bank of the River Thames attracts huge numbers of tourists every year. The standard entry ticket invites visitors to explore the ground and enter the legendary tower itself, home to the Crown Jewels of the British Monarchy – said to comprise the largest assemblage of crown jewels in the world. While looking around, the Yeoman Warders, the guardians of the Tower, will provide commentary on the tower’s long history and answer any questions from curious guests. Be sure to keep your eyes peeled for ravens overhead, too.

London is an impressive sight from any vantage point, but perhaps nowhere more so than up high. Visitors keen to see the city from one of its more elevated spots can do so by booking tickets for the London Eye. Also known as the Millennium Wheel owing to the date of its construction at the turn of the millennium, the giant observation wheel on the South Bank of the River Thames transports over three millions visitors on a gentle but thrilling loop each year. As you rise higher and higher, you’ll be treated to sensational unobstructed views across the city from your glass pod.

St Paul’s Cathedral

Over the centuries, St Paul’s Cathedral has played host to many notable national occasions, including royal weddings and funerals. It is also a symbol of the capital’s resilience, having survived wars, fires and numerous other challenges throughout its history. Today the imposing cathedral remains one of the city’s most important landmarks, drawing huge numbers of visitors who come to marvel at its stunning architecture and enduring religious importance. Highlights include Wellington’s Monument, a tribute to one of the country’s leading soldiers and statesmen, and the subterranean crypt where the tombs and memorials of some of the UK’s greatest heroes reside.

Royal Observatory Greenwich

Anyone who’s noticed the acronym ‘GMT’ used in relation to the time can discover its origins at the Royal Observatory Greenwich, the historic home of British astronomy, situated in the leafy borough of Greenwich. It is here that the standardised time zone of the UK and a number of other countries in Western Europe and Africa is recorded. It is also the location of the meridian line, a geographical reference line that passes through the observatory and that until 1974 was used worldwide for timekeeping and navigation. Visitors can stand along the Meridian Line with one foot in the eastern hemisphere and one in the west, peer through the Great Equatorial Telescope, the UK’s largest historic telescope.

The British Museum

It’s fair to say that London has its share of rainy days, so it’s certainly worth having some indoor options in your back pocket. That’s where the city’s array of world-class museums often come to the rescue, among which the British Museum stands out as one of the very best. Founded in 1753, the free-to-enter museum in the district of Bloomsbury has a collection of cultural treasures spanning two million years of history. Among the most eminent artefacts on permanent display include Egyptian mummies and the Parthenon Sculptures, as well as regular special exhibitions.

Borough Market

In recent decades, London’s food scene has grown to rival any other city on earth. At the heart of this rich and varied culinary landscape is Borough Market, one of the largest and oldest food markets in London, dating back to at least the 12th century. Today the market is a torch-bearer for London’s status as a true melting pot of cultures, with its mix of local produce and ethnic fare served up by street food vendors. There are also several sit-down eateries surrounding the market, as well as some of London’s most historic pubs. The market is open daily.

The Tate Modern

For art lovers, no trip to London is complete without a visit to Tate Modern. An internationally acclaimed modern and contemporary art museum housed in the former Bankside Power Station on the banks of the Thames, the Tate is simply a world-class cultural venue that captivates all who come here. The impression is instant as you enter the awe-inspiring Turbine Hall that runs the length of the entire building – and that’s before perusing the incredible collection of artwork on display, all of which are organised according to the movement they represent.

Offering respite from the hustle and bustle of the city, Hyde Park stretches over 350 acres of pristinely-maintained green space in the heart of the capital. The perfect place to kick back and relax after a long day’s sightseeing, the park features a large lake, an eye-catching memorial fountain created in honour of Princess Diana, and an assortment of sports and recreation facilities including a playground, football pitches, tennis courts, a putting green, lawn bowls, horse riding stables and open-air swimming in the Serpentine Lido. The park is also home to Speakers’ Corner, where people are invited to stand on soapboxes and engage in protests, speeches and debates.
