The Complete Guide to Bhimashankar Trek

The Bhimashankar trek is a nature lover’s delight. It takes you into the heart of the  Bhimashankar Wildlife Sanctuary  through thick forests. The Bhimashankar trek gives you a full dose of adventure with stream crossings, ladders, and rock climbing all bundled into one trek

While monsoon is the best time to do this trek, it can also be done in other seasons. The route is scenic and thrilling. Those accustomed to trekking can hike the Bhimashankar via the Shidi Ghat route. While for beginners, we recommend the Ganesh Ghat route, which offers splendid views and is easier.

While in the jungle, you’ll have a variety of birds, langurs, and spotted deer for company. If you’re lucky, you might even get to spot a ‘Shekar’ or the Malabar Giant Squirrel.

The best part of the trek is the trail to  Gupt Bhimashankar, which is one of the 12 jyotirlingas , located in the middle of a stream, underneath a rock.

➤  Trail Information

  • Altitude:  3,050 ft
  • Time took:  3.5 hours via Shidi ghat (ladder); 4 hours via Ganesh ghat. 2 hours to descend.
  • Trek gradient:  moderate-difficult
  • Water sources:  None. Cary 2-3 litres of water. In monsoon, you can refill your water bottles from seasonal streams.

Khandas is the base village for the Bhimashankar trek. About 500 m after crossing Khandas village, you will come across a small bridge at a T-junction. The road to the left leads to Shidi Ghat while the one to the right leads to the Ganesh Ghat walkway.

Ascent via Shidi Ghat:

The initial 20 minutes after the T-junction is an easy walk. You reach a stream in about 20 minutes. Once you cross the stream, the trail ascends for about 40 minutes, till you reach the first ladder. Once you climb the first ladder, you quickly reach the next one. There is a cave after the second ladder where you can relax for a while. This spot offers excellent views of the valley below.

Soon after you cross ladder 3, there is a patch with huge rocks. You need to be extremely careful while traversing this section. Although not mandatory, a rope will be helpful here.

Immediately after this section, the trail joins the one that comes from Ganesh ghat. This is the halfway mark. There are a few huts where locals sell refreshments.

Ascent via Ganesh Ghat:

The trail passes through dense vegetation for the initial one hour after the t-junction. This is a gradual ascent. After an hour, the trail opens out into a meadow. After 30 minutes of ascending through the meadow, it again enters a thick forest. This eventually meets the Shidi Ghat route.

The trail, after the two routes meet, is a steep climb through a thick forest. It leads directly to the top, where you find the  Bhimashankar temple .

➤  How to Reach Gupt Bhimashankar

The trail to Gupt Bhimashankar begins to the right of the temple (SBI ATM). Take the walkway along the stream behind the Bhimashankar temple. Within 100 meters, the trail enters a dense forest. There are arrows to show the way.

After 1 km, the trail splits. One part goes across straight a stream and the other moves parallel to the stream. Both of these lead to Gupt Bhimashankar. The first one passes Sakshi Vinayak temple on the way.

Descent via Ganesh Ghat:

The descent route is the same as the ascent till the halfway mark, where the routes from Ganesh Ghat and Shidi Ghat meet. The junction where the route splits is well-marked. You pass some huts close to this junction. Take a trail to the left after crossing the huts.

The trail leads through thick forests and meadows. You will see a Ganesh mandir around 20 minutes before completing the descent. A properly well-laid tar road begins as soon as you are at the base.

Walk down this road for 500 meters till you reach the T-junction where you started from. Shared jeeps and autos are available here to take you to Karjat/Neral.

This trek was researched and documented by Apoorva Karlekar & Sneha Rao in September 2017.

Alternate treks:

Although the Bhimashankar trek is unparalleled, we have more DIY treks in Maharashtra that are better suited if you’re a beginner and take it slow. Keep in mind that IndiaHikes does not run these treks. We send trek researchers to explore and document treks so that people can read the information on our website and go and trek by themselves.

Is it possible to trek bhimashankar by solo

' src=

Yes, you can do it solo, provided you’ve done few treks before. If you’re a beginner, please go with an experienced trekker or you can hire a guide from the base village (Khandas)

The information that you’ve provided is incorrect. Shidi Ghat is definitely shorter but more challenging than Ganesh Ghat route. There are a few risky sections to navigate near the iron ladder on the Shidi Ghat route. Any trekker will vouch by this. Secondly, last year (Aug 2023) the Shidi Ghat has been closed indefinitely by the Forest Dept due to an accident where a trek leader fell to his death while negotiating that risky patch during monsoons. Please rectify the information on the blog so that others aren’t misled into believing that Shidi Ghat is easier.

Happy Trekking

Situated in the Sahyadri hills of Maharashtra, the Bhimashankar trek is meant for nature lovers and photography enthusiasts. The Bhimashankar trek gives an awe-inspiring experience to the trekkers, especially in the monsoon season. Known for the majestic waterfalls, the monsoon trek to Bhimashankar is one of the famous treks near Mumbai and Pune. Lush greenery and calm surroundings make it a perfect place to enjoy some quality time with friends and family. Hiking through the dense forests, huge mountains and multiple waterfalls gives immense joy and peace to the trekkers.

The Bhimashankar Wildlife Sanctuary also lies on the way. Positioned at 3800 feet above the sea level, it is home to various birds and animals. The sanctuary witnesses heavy rainfall during monsoons. Trekkers can catch a sight of some endangered birds and animals. In the deep woods, one can find a rare animal, Malabar giant squirrel, which is locally called as ‘Shekaru’.

The prominent Bhimshankar Temple is a well-known Jyotirlinga amongst 12 Jyotirlingas situated in India, and takes the visitors back to the 18th century. The exquisite architecture of this divine temple showcases the exceptional skills of ancient Vishwakarma sculptors. The temple is not only a must visit for the devotees of Lord Shiva but also for the trekkers, photographers and birdwatchers. Take a picture of the antique Hemadpanthi bell, hanging at the entrance of the temple. Here, you will be lost in the astonishing beauty of the Nagara-style architecture, which offers a great click to the camera. Also, you will be surprised to see Buddha-style carvings on the temple walls. These carvings depict Bhimashankar, Amba-Ambika and Bhootling.

In recent times, the temple has gained tremendous popularity as Bhimashankar was declared as a wildlife sanctuary in 1985. Moreover, you can see the source of River Bhima, which merges with the River Krishna. After a sacred visit to the temple, you will be spending a night in the camp under the glittery sky.

Bhimashankar is truly the most sought-after trekking destination for adventure lovers. Plan the Bhimashankar monsoon trek to explore the wonderful marvels of nature, and to have fun like never before!

Day 1: Reaching the Hilltop and Bhimshankar Temple The exciting journey will begin after your arrival at the Karjat railway station. Begin your onward journey to the base village, which is the starting point for Bhimashankar trek in Maharashtra, where you can have a scrumptious breakfast.

Start your trek through Shidi Ghaat at around 10.30 am. The trail will pass through the lush green hills, waterfalls, river streams and dense forest. Exhilarate in the pleasant climate as you hike towards the hilltop. Enjoy your lunch enroute. At around 3pm, you will reach the top. Spend some time exploring. Have dinner at night, and spend the night camping under the stars.

Day 2: Descending Down to the Base Village

You will wake up to the stunning view of sunrise. Gorge on a scrumptious breakfast before starting your descent by Ganesh Ghat. You will have lunch midway down, and then, after trekking around two more hours, you will reach the base village, from where you will continue on to Karjat station. Board a train from Karjat Station back to Mumbai.

Lush Green View of Bhimashankar Trek Path

What is the best time to visit Bhimashankar Trek?

The best time to visit is during the monsoon season from July to September, as the weather is pleasant, waterfalls are rejuvenated, and faunas can be spotted.

Spring and winter are also great seasons for a trek. Spring, from February to March, offers a magical time to explore the forests with temperatures ranging from 15ᵒC to 31ᵒC. Winter, from November to February, is perfect for recreational activities, although trekkers may want to carry jackets or woollens as the temperature can drop to 11/12ᵒC at night.

However, it’s not recommended to visit between June and September due to heavy rainfall, making the climb slippery and dangerous. Summertime trek is also not recommended due to high humidity, which can be extremely exhausting. Nonetheless, daredevils can head to the trails if they are ready for the rains or the hot and humid season.

How to reach the starting point of the trek?

Khandas village is the starting point for the Bhimashankar trek and can be reached through Karjat. To reach Karjat/Neral from Mumbai, you can board a local train or outstation train to Karjat or Pune and alight at Neral or Karjat, which takes about 2 hours from Dadar railway station. If you’re traveling from Pune, board a Mumbai bound train and alight at Neral or Karjat, which takes about 2 hours.

To reach Bhimashankar from Neral, take a sharing Tum-Tum/Van to Kashele, which costs 20 Rs per seat. From Kashele, you can either wait for the bus to Khandas base village or board another sharing Tum-Tum, which costs 30-40 Rs per seat. Private jeeps/autos are easily available from Neral/Karjat to Kashele/Khandas base village, and you can bargain for a decent deal. It costs Rs 500 to travel from Neral to Khandas base village.

Availability of accommodations and food near the trek

Travellers to Bhimashankar have several options for food during their trek. They can find hotels and restaurants set up by villagers at Khandas village and small stalls near the Bhimashankar temple. However, it is advisable to carry your own food. During the trek, travelers can also find authentic local food like Jhunka Bhakhri and Kande Pohe at makeshift stops set up by the locals.

In Bhimashankar village, there are no restaurants, but travelers can head to nearby hotels for the local cuisine. There are also some delicious local snacks available at the point where the two trekking trails meet, including Misal Paav, Roasted Corn, Fruits, Groundnuts, Batata Wada, Idli Sambar, Pakoras, Lemonade, and Ginger Tea. Some restaurants also serve Maharashtrian Thalis with traditionally cooked vegetables, curries, flatbreads, and salad.

Accommodation:

Night stays can be arranged at Khandas at the start of the trek. Bhimashankar temple has a few lodges and hotels, and local villagers can also help with accommodation at the village and the top. Additionally, there are options for hotels, guest houses, and lodges in all budgets in Bhimashankar.

You can check for good hotel deals here.

The Difficulty level of the Bhimashankar Trek

The Bhimashankar trek is a moderate-difficult trek with steep slopes and rocky terrain. There are two routes available, Ganesh Ghat and Shidi Ghat, with the latter being more difficult. The trek is filled with stunning artifacts by nature, and the Ganesh Ghat route is relatively easier, but still demands caution and energy. The most difficult part of the trek is braved while passing through steep pathways.

Preparation required for the Bhimashankar Trek

The Bhimashankar trek is suitable for those with good stamina, endurance, and fitness levels, and not necessarily for expert trekkers. Light workout sessions or cardio can be done at least two weeks before the trek to help prepare the body. It is also important to keep the backpack light. Network connection is available at the base village but as you climb up, mobile connectivity will fluctuate due to the remote location and high altitude, with poor connectivity and scarce availability of telecom towers.

The trail takes you through dense forests, cascading waterfalls, and panoramic viewpoints, providing a serene escape from the hustle and bustle of city life.

2. Best Time to Visit:

The Bhimashankar trek is best enjoyed during the post-monsoon and winter months, from September to February. During this period, the weather is pleasant, and the landscapes are lush green. Monsoon months offer a different kind of beauty with vibrant foliage but can make the trail slippery.

  • Day 2: Khandas to Bhimashankar Temple and Return: The trek can usually be completed in a day, starting from Khandas, ascending through the trail, exploring the Bhimashankar Temple, and returning by evening.

4. The Trail:

For the easy-going, Bhimashankar, about 275 km from Mumbai by road is a weekend getaway. For Hiking, Bhimashankar Sidhi Ghat Trek is a 3250 feet high and a 4.5-hour grueling trek from Khandas village. It is a test of endurance for our muscles, joints, and perseverance for our minds.

Trekking Bhimashankar

The temple on top dedicated to Lord Shiva dates back to the 18th century. Legend is that Lord Shiva killed Bhima, an Asura who lived there. Bhimashankar wildlife sanctuary is home to a variety of endangered species of flora and fauna. The Giant Indian Squirrel is a significant attraction, while the other species present include Panther, Sambar, Wild Boar. The Bhima river originates from here and joins river Krishna.  Trekking Bhimashankar  during the monsoons is ideal and the most enjoyable, with endless stretches of greenery right from the base with waterfalls and gushing streams. But it is also risky. River Bhima, also known as Chandrabhaga River, especially at Pandharpur, resembles the Moon's shape.

Bhimashankar-Ladder-Route

Bhimashankar Trek Plan

Initially, we planned to cover only the first plateau and a hike through the forests, since trekking up to Bhimashankar and back on the same day could be a daunting task. But the enthusiasm was infectious, and each had a point to prove to oneself. Even the first-timers were determined. It is an experience that you can never forget, and our trek was one of them. So here we go, we were 30 plus trekkers of different age groups with a mixed bag of experienced casual and first-time trekkers.  Bhimashankar  located near to Pune in the ghat region of the Sahyadri hills

Train Journey Bhimashankar Trek

Trek to Bhimashankar was planned by Treks and Trails India. I asked everyone to be on time & catch the last train leaving from CST Railway Station to Karjat Railway Station from their respective stations. The meeting point was 2nd last boogie of the train. Everybody was excited and caught the train through some of them caught the earlier train, and some got into a different boogie. And as usual, few were following Indian Standard Time and missed the train.

Everybody was scattered in the boogie as it was a full boogie till Kalyan, but and many of us did not know each other. I was trying to talk with everyone so that they don’t feel left out. We reached Karjat and headed to the State Transport Bus stand, where we rested for a couple of hours. Early in the morning, we got into Four TUM-TUM bigger versions of auto-rickshaw and headed for Khandas, the base village, an hour-long ride.

Tum Tum Ride to Khandas trek start point for Bhimashankar

It was dark when we started our ride before dawn, but later while traveling to Khandas, we had a real feeling of the countryside as we saw small villages, farms, animals, bullock carts, which we don’t get to see in our day to day life. There are two Trek routes for Bhimashankar Ganesh Ghat and Shidi Ghat or Ladder route. We were going to ascend Via Shidi Ghat and descend Via Ganesh Ghat to save time and enjoy the beauty of both the courses.

We had hired a local villager to help us while ascending till the Shidi Ghat were over. We briefed everyone about the trek, gave some instructions, dos, and don’ts and then started the trek. Everyone was very excited and started the trek.

Bhimashankar Trek Blog

Within an hour, we reached the first ladder out of the three ladders were we met two other groups who were climbing the ladder. The other groups were also big like us but were slow and didn’t have experienced people to assist them in the climb, so I had to step forward as they had already slowed us down by an hour.

Bhimashankar-Trek-Ladder

Small Break

We were running behind schedule, and our group had got divided into two due to other groups. We still managed to catch up with the 1st half of our group after crossing the three ladders as there is a plateau after the ladders where there are some huts that sell tea, buttermilk, lime juice, biscuits, Bhakri with chutney. The Plateau is where both the routes meet, and from here, there is only one single route. From here, the path ahead was steep, but our first-half group had waited for us over there for more than half an hour, so they requested me to allow them to go ahead. I hesitated to let them, but they were bored, so I permitted them to go ahead, as it consisted of experienced trekkers who had done this trek before.

  • Gupt Bhimashankar

I had instructed them to meet near the Bhimashankar temple and give the order for lunch as it was Shravan season there would-be pilgrims in huge numbers visiting Bhimashankar and we had to save time. After two hours, the first group called me and said they had reached the top, and there is a lot of crowds and a very long line for darshan due to Shravan Sunday. So they are thinking of skipping the darshan and visiting Gupt Mahadev, also known as Gupt Bhimashankar, to which I agreed. Gupt Mahadev is around half an hour's walk from the temple near a flowing river. They had also placed the order for lunch with a resident homestay over there.

Bhimashankar-Mandir-Monsoon

Finally Reached Bhimashankar

While climbing, we got a delightful climate and not much rain, so we were able to get a good view of the natural beauty. And after a few hours, we finally reached the top. On top, there is a lake. It took approx two hours and thirty minutes to reach till the Mandir.

After reaching the top, we went near the temple where we were supposed to meet but couldn’t find any network to contact the first group. So we had to wait there, and while we were waiting near the temple, we realized that some of our group trekkers are not with us, and we had to search for them as cell phones were not reachable, and the crowd was increasing. After looking for them, we found some of them and came to know via other trekkers that four of our trekkers had decided to quit and left by bus for Mumbai to which we were upset and disappointed.

Descend return Bhimashankar Trek starts from Ganesh Ghat

But we had to carry on and descend to complete the trek. During this, our first group had come back, and we proceeded for lunch with them. There we had to wait for some time as the food was not ready, but it was worth waiting as the food was hot and delicious. We all enjoyed it as it was typical home food.

Descend return Bhimashankar Trek starts from Ganesh Ghat.

After lunch, we started our journey back right away, and we had to ensure that we reach down soon as it would become dark, and very few of us had carried the torch. So the instructions were given to the entire group clearly, and we started descending. While descending, we were enjoying the scenic beauty around us and also meeting many devotees climbing up for the next day darshan.

Ganesh Ghat

By God's grace, we did not have too many people slip and fall, which generally happens in this trek during this season, and all of them maintained a reasonable speed also. One of our trekkers was around 50 plus but was very sporty as we had taken only one short break and descended via Ganesh Ghat, which is a long and easy route. We reached the Ganesh mandir and took the darshan and a small break and again started to descend.

Karjat Journey Begins

We all reached down within time, and there was still daylight. I had already called the Maruti vans when we reached the Ganesh mandir and informed them that we should be down in an hour or so. He said that it would take some time as one of the vans was on his way from Karjat, so I decided to send the other Vehicle ahead so that they can reach home soon, and I stayed back with some other trekker for the last vehicle to come.

Finally, after some time, the last van came, and we started our ride back to Karjat station. We reached Karjat station, and a train for Mumbai just left, which we were unable to catch, so now we had to wait for around 20-30 minutes for the next train. Then the next train came we got into it and were relaxing. By this time, everyone’s energy levels crushed, but we still chatted, and everyone alighted at their respective stations as we had boarded. We wished a final goodbye of this beautiful journey to each other, as this was one of the most memorable treks we had.

  • Trip Name: Bhimashankar via Shidi And Ganesh Ghat
  • Difficulty: Medium to hard
  • Base: Khandas village
  • Time: 10 hours

If you love spending time in the lap of nature with greenery and hills all around you, the Bhimashankar trek is designed just for you! The trek makes you reach highly picturesque Bhimashankar through the beautiful Shidi and Ganesh Ghats.

Bhimashankar holds a religious significance for the devotees of Lord Shiva. It is one of the twelve Jyotirlings, built with the Nagara style of architecture. Being one of the five Jyotirlings in the state of Maharashtra, Bhimashankar has a beautiful Shiva temple.

Apart from being a beloved destination for the devotees, Bhimashankar attracts nature lovers from across the country to witness its serenity and aesthetic appeal. The trek is a must-have experience for all nature lovers, especially in the monsoon season. Once it starts raining, the beauty of Bhimashankar only gets better.

The Bhimashankar trek is one of the most popular and beautiful destinations to visit via trekking . There are two major routes one can take to climb to the base destination from Karjat – via Shidi Ghat and via Ganesh Ghat.

If you are interested more in enjoying the nature around you and not looking for an adrenaline rush, you can go for the Bhimashankar trek via Ganesh Ghat. This route is relatively simpler and suitable for beginners.

However, if you are looking for some thrill and want to challenge yourself, you should definitely go for the Bhimashankar trek via Shidi Ghat. This is a more difficult route to take and involves an adventurous and steep walk, suitable for experienced trekkers. This route will involve a number of climbs up and down the hills.

Also, the riskier route will make you encounter some of the most beautiful elements of nature. As you climb up to Bhimashakar via Shidi Ghat, you pass through beautiful streams, waterfalls, and deep forests . If you are willing to take a little risk and are ready to be careful throughout your journey, it is advisable to take the route via Shidi Ghat.

No matter which route you take, you are bound to experience nature at its finest. Most visitors prefer taking this trip during the monsoons. However, if you are taking the route via Shidi Ghat, it is advisable to avoid the monsoon season as the stairs get slippery. You can always enjoy the trip by reaching Bhimashankar via Ganesh Ghat.

Another aesthetic highlight of your trip would be the beautiful green forest of Bhimashankar. With its innumerable species of flora and fauna, the forest is no less than a paradise for nature lovers. If you are looking for a perfect weekend getaway to replenish your energy for the week ahead, you can definitely take this trip from Karjat.

Both locations go out of their way to provide excellent service, value, and products!! Central Ave crew gets kudos for answering my emailed inquiry, and Rick gets a HUGE shout-out for listening to what I had in mind, understanding what it was going to take, and bringing it to fruition...the bike came out awesome, the care and attention to detail is second to none!! Glad I have found my LBS!!

I ended up with a flat tire last week and my local bike shop was closed. I happened to pass ABC on the way home and popped in hoping they could fix my flat. Within a minute of being in the front door, the mechanic had the wheel off and was installing a new tire and tube. I was in and out in under 15 minutes with a new tire and tube. I was appreciative of them knocking it out so quickly. Top notch turn around.

Came her last weekend cause my boyfriend had a flat on his bike. I haven't had a bike since I was a kid (I probably wouldn't even remember how to ride haha) so price wise I really had no idea what to expect. Trek was very reasonably priced and even changed the tire for us. Everyone was so nice too and offered us a drink while we waited. There was someone ahead of us so we were there maybe 20 minutes. Definitely will be back for all his bike needs!

Great store! Everyone was so helpful, friendly, and informative. I went here twice to test bikes out. They helped me pick bikes to try based on my wants, needs, and preferences. I bought the Women's FX 2 in Miami Green. I changed out the handlebar stem so it is adjustable to either ride upright or down. I also added handlebar grips. I bought front and rear lights. It was ready in about 3 days. If you're looking for a Trek, I highly recommend this store!

Bought my first Trek. Staff was very helpful and knowledgeable. Went riding and within trek weeks got a flat (no fault of the bike) and called for service and they were quick and able to fit it that day. Liked the fact I get three free tune-up with my purchase.

My husband and I are Trek bike fanatics so we have been to this store many times. My trek bike was actually delivered and assembled there by the employees for free. All I had to do was pick it up, so that was nice! Every time we have been in the staff are all welcoming and offer assistance for help, ideas, etc. All in all, we love trek bikes and are happy there is a trek store down the road from where we live! Must check it out if you're in the area and want to look at some high quality bikes.

So l've bought a few accessories from this location in the past. They never have what l need but l settle for what's in stock. The counter staff is extremely friendly and l like supporting local shops. I wanted a new derailer and decided to give them a chance. After walking around, listening to the repair guy complain about customers and deposits, l decide to not go elsewhere and went to his station and asked for a new derailer. Yes my bike had other issues but my request was clear. He didn't even acknowledged my request and went on his sales pitch on the other items needed.Fine... I'm the district manager for another cycle company so l just let him ramble and feel empowered.I then paid for everything up front (since he was expressing his grievances on the sales floor‍). The total was $420.51 and it would be ready Friday. At this moment l knew it wouldn't be ready. The "over promise" is always the cocky sales rookie mistake. And when Friday arrived it wasn't ready but l had another charge and still NO derailer! l picked up my bike a week later and noticed NO derailer...The repair guy didn't even acknowledge me.I then left with my bike and less than a block away my f&$):@! derailer breaks and l walk my bike home! l was so pissed l put my Trek in the garage and haven't looked at it since. But l did take my receipt to another competitor and it was clear this location didn't provide the best prices.l bought a new seat...but they never gave me back the seat l had on the bike.I never said "Hey you can keep the seat".I did purchase a Kryptonite lock for my bike. But they removed it from the packaging and didn't include the clamp. l have never been on any site with a grievance and this was never about the money. The actions on the sales floor is a reflection of the General Manager. Sales floor etiquette is paramount and you should never "judge a book by its cover". All that arrogant whining about polices and procedures should be discussed in a meeting. Check out Tony's Bike Shop and other localized bike shops for repairs before you invest your money and time at this location.

They did an excellent speedy job with a tuneup for my bike. Safe social distancing guidelines. My bike is back to fully operational!!!

Mikhail Lomonosov

Born: Denisovka, Archangelsk Province - 19 November 1711 Died: St. Petersburg - 15 April 1765

Mikhail Lomonosov was the great polymath of the Russian Enlightenment. Born in the deepest provinces of Northern Russia, he managed to gain a first-class education through a combination of natural intelligence and sheer force of will, and went on to make significant advances in several fields of science, as well as writing one of the first Russian grammars, several volumes of history, and a great quantity of poetry. In short, he was instrumental in pulling Russia further into the modern world, and in helping to make St. Petersburg a centre of learning as great as almost any in Europe.

Lomonosov was born in the village of Denisovka (now Lomonosovo), a village about 100 kilometers south-east of Arkhangelsk on the Severnaya Dvina river. His father was a peasant fisherman who had grown rich transporting goods from Arkhangelsk to settlements in the far north. His mother, the daughter of a deacon, died when he was very young, but not before she had taught him to read. From the age of ten, he accompanied his father on voyages to learn the business.

In 1730, however, determined to study, he ran away from home and walked over 1 000 kilometers to Moscow. Claiming to be the son of a provincial priest, he was able to enroll in the Slavic Greek Latin Academy, where he studied for five years before being sent on to St. Petersburg's Academic University. The following year (1736), he was a select group of outstanding students sponsored by the Academy of Sciences to study mathematics, chemistry, physics, philosophy and metallurgy in Western Europe. Lomonosov spent three years at the University of Marburg as a personal student of the philosopher Christian Wolff, then a year studying mining and metallurgy in Saxony, and a further year travelling in Germany and the Low Countries. While in Marburg, he fell in love with and married his landlady's daughter, Elizabeth Christine Zilch.

Due to lack of funds to support his young family, Lomonosov returned to St. Petersburg at the end of 1741, and was immediately appointed adjunct to the physics class at the Academy of Sciences. In 1745 he became the Academy's first Russian-born Professor of Chemistry, and in 1748 the first chemical research laboratory in Russia was built for him.

Throughout his career at the Academy, Lomonosov was a passionate advocate for making education in Russia more accessible to the lower ranks of Russian society. He campaigned to give public lectures in Russian and for the translation into Russian of more scientific texts. In this, he found himself in conflict with one of the founders of the Academy, the German ethnologist Gerhard Friedrich Miller (whose views on the importance of Scandinavians and Germans in Russian history Lomonosov also hotly disputed). By composing and presenting at an official Assembly of the Academy in 1749 his ode to the Empress Elizaveta Petrovna, Lomonosov gained considerable favour at court and a powerful ally in his pedagogical endeavours in the form of Elizaveta's lover, Count Ivan Shuvalov. Together, Lomonosov and Shuvalov founded Moscow University in 1755. It was also thanks to Shuvalov's influence that the Empress granted Lomonosov a manor and four surrounding villages at Ust-Ruditsa, where he was able to implement his plan to open a mosaic and glass factory, the first outside Italy to produce stained glass mosaics.

By 1758, Lomonosov's responsibilities included overseeing the Academy's Geography Department, Historical Assembly, University and Gymnasium, the latter of which he again insisted on making open to lowborn Russians. In 1760, he was appointed a foreign member of the Swedish Royal Academy of Sciences, and in 1764 he was similarly honoured by the Academy of Sciences of the Institute of Bologna. The same year, he was granted by Elizaveta Petrovna the rank of Secretary of State. He died 4 April 1765, and was buried in the Lazarev Cemetery of St. Petersburg's Alexander Nevsky Monastery.

Much of Lomonosov's work was unknown outside Russia until many years after his death, and even now it is more the extraordinary breadth of his inquiry and understanding, rather than any specific grand advancements in a particular field, that make him such a seminal figure in Russian science. Among the highlights of his academic career were his discovery of an atmosphere around Venus, his assertion of the Law of Conservation of Mass (nearly two decades before Antoine Lavoisier), and his development of a prototype of the Herschelian telescope. In 1764, he arranged the expedition along the northern coast of Siberia that discovered the Northeast Passage between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. His works also contained intuitions of the wave theory of light and the theory of continental drift. He made improvements to navigational instruments and demonstrated the organic origin of soil, peat, coal, petroleum and amber. Without knowledge of Da Vinci's work, he developed a working prototype of a helicopter.

He wrote the first guide to rhetoric in the Russian language, and his Russian Grammar was among the first to codify the language. His Ancient Russian History compared the development of Russia to the development of the Roman Empire, a theme that would become increasingly popular in the 19th century. His poetry was much praised during his lifetime, although it has been largely ignored by posterity.

Lomonosov is remembered in central St. Petersburg in the names of Ulitsa Lomonosova ("Lomonosov Street"), Ploshchad Lomonosova ("Lomonosov Square") and the adjacent bridge across the Fontanka River. During the Soviet Period, his name was given to the Imperial Porcelain Manufactory, and hence to the nearby metro station, Lomonosovskaya. The Soviets also renamed the suburban town of Oranienburg as Lomonosovo. In 1986, a magnificent monument to Lomonosov was unveiled in front of the Twelve Colleges, the main campus of St. Petersburg State University, acknowledging the enormous debt that institution owes the great polymath who is rightfully considered the father of Russian science.
