Righteous Brothers' Bill Medley talks Beatles, Phil Spector and keeping the legacy going

Portrait of Chris Jordan

The Righteous Brothers had the hardest job in show business: They opened for the Beatles in 1964.

Bill Medley and Bucky Heard, who's replaced the late Bobby Hatfield — are now touring theaters as the Righteous Brothers, with upcoming shows in Pennsylvania, New Jersey and New York.

In a USA Today Network New Jersey interview, Medley talked about the early days and the 1964 tour.

“We had a front-row seat to history,” he said.

The Righteous Brothers, from Southern California, had a minor hit with “Little Latin Lupe Lu,” and saw some chart action on the West Coast when they were booked to open for the Beatles. Jackie De Shannon, the Bill Black Combo and the Exciters were also on the bill.

“It (was) kind of the boot camp of rock 'n' roll,” said Medley, 81, of the tour. “In California it was fine because we had West Coast hits, ... but when we got to the South and the East Coast and this and that and the 'Righteous Brothers,' they thought we were a religious choir, or something. Some nights it was tough. It was 'We want the Beatles, we want the Beatles,' but we kind of understood it.”

The tour took place in in August and September of 1964, several months after the Beatles' breakthrough appearance on “The Ed Sullivan Show” in February. Shows took pace in arenas and stadiums at a time when rock music's touring industry was nascent.

Medley and Hatfield feared for the safety of the fans.

“When you work a huge stadium and they’re out down on the field, the kids start pressing to the front and it starts to squash all the kids in the front. It’s very scary,” Medley said. “Literally most of what we were seeing was cops and paramedics pulling kids out over the fence to save their lives. I don’t think anybody was really hurt, thank God ... "

Sopranos reunion: Chevy Super Bowl commercial took place at Bahrs Landing in Highlands

The Righteous Brothers exited the tour halfway through to appear on the then-new TV show “Shindig.” By then, they had made four new friends from Liverpool.

“We were all on the same plane going from one concert to the other and got to know the guys pretty well,” Medley said. “They were very protected but on the plane it was pretty relaxed and just good guys, just real street guys. They were as excited about what was happening as anybody. They didn’t know it was going to happen at the extent that it did. They were just overjoyed.”

The Righteous Brothers joined another act on the rise for their '64 tour: the Rolling Stones. They also connected with famed produced Phil Spector. Their first Spector-produced hit was the Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil classic, “You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feelin’."

“Just Once in My Life,” “Unchained Melody” and “The White Cliffs of Dover” followed with the eccentric Spector.

The run established them as the focal point of the Blue-Eyed Soul movement, and as arguably the greatest vocal duo of the rock 'n' roll era.

“Phil was real good with us, and eccentric is the right word,” Medley said. “He wanted people to think he was real eccentric, and I guess you have to be eccentric to want people to think you’re eccentric. But he treated us real well. He was used to working with a lot of girl groups, and Bobby and I were just a couple of street guys. ... I think he knew there was a limitation to how far he could weird out on us."

Super Bowl: Why you can thank Bon Jovi for keeping the Dr. Dre-led halftime show a surprise

Spector, who's known as the originator of the “Wall of Sound,” was convicted of murder in 2009. By 1966, the Righteous Brothers had moved on from Spector and Medley produced “(You're My) Soul and Inspiration.” The duo broke up in '68, and had a comeback hit with “Rock and Roll Heaven” in 1974.

In 1987, Medley recorded “(I've Had) The Time of My Life” with Jennifer Warnes for “Dirty Dancing.” The song was co-written by New Brunswick-native Franke Previte.

“So basically we did the song just to sing together,” said Medley.  “Nobody thought the movie was going to do anything.”

The song was a No. 1 Billboard hit and won an Academy Award.

“I said, 'What’s the name of the movie? I said man, that sounds like a bad porno. They said, 'No, no, it’s really cute.' So we did it and it’s a great song, and Jennifer and I were happy to do it.”

P-Funk: Big George Clinton birthday homecoming show in Newark is getting bigger

Medley and Hatfield were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2003. Later that year, Hatfield passed away shortly before a Righteous Brothers concert at the age of 63.

“After 13, 14 years, I had a lot of friends saying 'Bill, everybody wants to hear this music, don't let the music die.' I started thinking about it,” Medley said. “I wasn’t into it and I didn’t want to do it, but I went into see Bucky Heard’s show and he did a Journey song and just killed it. If he can do Steve Perry he can do a version of Bobby Hatfield.”

Heard is an Alabama native who has worked with Andy Williams, Glen Campbell and more.

“I told Bucky when we got together, I don’t want you to sound like Bobby but I just need to sing like Bobby,” Medley said. “Bring yourself to it. I knew it was enormous shoes to fill. You just can't replace Bobby Hatfield. He’s one of the great singers to come out of the '60s, but Bucky is doing a phenomenal job.

"I knew Bucky five, six years before we tried it and he's a good guy, a good family man— and that's damn near as important, if not more important, than being a great singer.”

China hands U.S. first loss in men's 4x100m medley relay

Check out the numbers behind Bobby Finke's 1,500-meter freestyle gold medal win. (0:42)

  • ESPN News Services

NANTERRE, France -- China stunned the U.S. by winning gold in the men's 4x100 medley relay on Sunday, a race the Americans had won at every Olympics other than the boycotted Moscow Games in 1980.

The medley relay was added to the program in 1960.

The winning team included Qin Haiyang and Sun Jiajun, who were both among the nearly two dozen swimmers who tested positive for a banned substance at the Tokyo Games but were allowed to compete after a Chinese investigation ruled that they consumed food that had been contaminated. The result is sure to stir more hard feelings from other nations that feel the Chinese got away with cheating.

But the real star of the Chinese team was Pan Zhanle, who had previously set a world record while winning the 100 free and powered away from American Hunter Armstrong on the anchor leg to touch in 3 minutes, 27.46 seconds.

The Americans had to settle for silver in 3:28.01, with France taking bronze in 3:28.38 to give Léon Marchand his fifth medal of the games to go along with four individual golds.

British star Adam Peaty, whose team barely missed out on a medal by finishing fourth, blasted a system that allowed the Chinese swimmers to compete at the Olympics.

"If you touch and you know you're cheating, you're not winning, right?" Peaty said. "As an honorable person, I mean, you should be out of the sport, but we know sport isn't that simple."

Peaty noted that after the initial revelations, additional reports surfaced of more positive tests in the Chinese program that went unpunished. The New York Times reported last week that two more Chinese swimmers had tested positive, including one 2024 Olympian, for a banned substance in 2022 but were cleared by Chinese officials to compete.

"I think we've got our faith in the system, but we also don't," he said. "Whoever's in the race, I expect in my head that it has to be fair for them to be there. We did our best job as a team to do that, and it may have been [worthy of] a bronze. Who knows?"

Caeleb Dressel, who swam the butterfly leg for the Americans, said prior to the Olympics that he didn't have faith in the World Anti-Doping Agency or his sport's governing body, World Aquatics.

With a silver around his neck, he seemed resigned to the belief that nothing will change.

"I don't work for WADA," Dressel said. "There's nothing I can do."

Swedish gold in the women's 50 free

Sarah Sjöström of Sweden claimed her second gold medal of the Paris Olympics, furiously dashing from one end of the pool to the other to easily claim the 50-meter freestyle title on the final night of swimming Sunday.

Sjöström, 30, competing in her fifth Summer Games, had already won the 100 free -- an event in which she holds the world record but only decided to swim at the urging of her coach.

She was more surprised than anyone with that victory, which had her overflowing with confidence heading into the 50 free.

Sjöström touched in 23.71 seconds, just shy of the world record of 23.61 she set at the 2023 world championships in Fukuoka, Japan. In a race that's usually decided by a hundredths of a second, the Swedish star turned this into a relative blowout. She was fastest off the block and clearly in control by the midway point of the single lap.

Meg Harris of Australia took the silver in 23.97, while the bronze went to China's Zhang Yufei in 24.20. For Zhang, one of the swimmers implicated in a Chinese doping scandal, it was her fourth bronze of the games to go with a silver.

Gretchen Walsh of the United States just missed out on her fourth medal of the games, touching fourth in 24.21.

In the last individual event, Daniel Wiffen of Ireland was looking to add the 1,500 freestyle title to his victory in the 800 free.

The competition at La Defense Arena was set to close with the men's and women's 4x100 medley relays.

The Associated Press contributed to this story.
