</a></span>"}'/> Canterbury is a region on the east coast of the South Island of New Zealand . The Canterbury Plains stretch from the Conway River in the north, just south of Kaikoura , to the great Waitaki River in the south, just north of Oamaru . The flat plains stretch from the Pacific Ocean in the east to the Southern Alps in the west, broken only by the volcanic Banks Peninsula .
Canterbury was settled in the 1850s by colonists from England. The settlement was planned and developed by the Canterbury Company.
Parts of upper Canterbiry, known as the Mackenzie Country, is named after 1850s sheep rustler James Mackenzie. Hydro power stations were built at Waitaki in the 1930s and Lake Tekapo in the late 1940s. In the early 1960s, the advent of high-voltage direct current (HVDC) technology made it possible to export large amounts of electricity out of the South Island to the power-hungry North Island. Subsequently, the Mackenzie Country and thus Canterbury became a hive of hydroelectric scheme construction. The towns of Otematata and Twizel were established to house workers building the four dams, 50 km (30 mi) of canals, and six power stations which today produce one-sixth of New Zealand's electricity needs. When the scheme was finished in 1985, most of the workers' houses in these towns were sold off as holiday homes.
Mid Canterbury is where the Canterbury Plains rise up into the highest parts of the Southern Alps. It is bounded by the Ashley River in the north, the Waitaki River in the south, the Mackenzie Country to the west and the Southern Alps in the northwest.
Greater Christchurch is what makes Chch and the many satellite towns surrounding Christchurch that are undergoing rapid expansion, especially since the 2011 Christchurch earthquake. Rolleston was only a small village on the side of State Highway 1 back in the early 1990s; today, the town has a population of over 13,000.
Banks Peninsula is named after Joseph Banks, a naturalist who visited New Zealand with Captain James Cook .
State Highway 1 traverses the length of the Canterbury plains.
Public transport, such as buses between towns is limited to the main routes between major centres. While it's helpful as a traveller to get around in the Christchurch area (including nearby towns such as Lyttelton), it is not a practical method of getting between places.
To explore out-of-the-way places you really need a car unless you are going on a tour group. The roads in Canterbury aren't too winding for NZ standards, generally well-maintained and have few potholes. Unlike Canterbury's Tasmanian counterparts, the roads are reasonably wide with wide shoulders and much of it is also utilised by freight.
There are three main highways used for getting between the Canterbury:
Bicycling is a practical proposition because the roads are relatively flat. Christchurch particularly has very bike-friendly streets, especially in Central City, but bicycle lanes in other cities is a bit of a far cry. Many intercity cycle routes utilise highways.
Canterbury was named one of the hottest destinations to see in 2021 by online travel platform, Vacaay.
The Southern Alps provide a magnificent backdrop to the Mackenzie Country. There are many beautiful lakes in the region and NZ State Highway 8 runs along the shoreline of two of the largest, Lake Tekapo and Lake Pukaki. The jagged snow-capped peak of Aoraki / Mount Cook , the highest mountain in New Zealand, can be seen in the far distance across Lake Pukaki, from SH 8. For a closer look, NZ State Highway 80 runs along the west shore of Lake Pukaki to Aoraki Mount Cook National Park Village.
Some of the bays near Lyttelton can be popular watering holes for Cantabrians. Corsair Bay has one of the nicest beaches in the area, and is a great place to relax on a sunny day.
There is an area between Hanmer Springs , Amberley and Kaikoura (all about 150 km apart) that around the year 2000 was designated by local councils as the Alpine Pacific Triangle . It has a variety of activities.
There are many outdoor activities in the Alps, including:
With much of the plains dedicated to farming, roadside stalls selling local produce can be seen in some places. However, similar quality produce is often available at similar prices in city supermarkets, so don't go out of your way and expect to get a bargain at the farm gate. More likely, you will find the unusual and rare produce at the farm gate, where it is grown in quantities too small to sell to a mass market.
A few wine-making specialists exploit the unique climates and produce of their particular properties.

Travel and Leisure says: " Donna Thomas has explored many corners of North and South Islands in search of hidden gems. She can help birdwatchers see the endangered yellow-eyed penguin or send avid trekkers on guided hikes to secret waterfalls in Paparoa National Park. "
The New Zealand region of Canterbury mostly comprises the Canterbury Plains. The region is bounded in the north by the Conway River, to the west by the Southern Alps and to the south by the Waitaki River. Christchurch is the main city and Timaru is second in size. Other townships range from Kaikoura in the North to Ashburton in the south.
Akaroa is a town on Banks Peninsula in the Canterbury region of the South Island of New Zealand. It is 82 kilometres by road from Christchurch. Set on a beautiful, sheltered harbour and overlooked by craggy volcanic hills, Akaroa is a popular resort town with a decidedly French flavour. Many Hector's Dolphins may be found in the harbour, and 'swim with the dolphins' boat tours are a major tourist attraction.
Amberley is a town located in the Hurunui District of north Canterbury, on the east coast of the South Island of New Zealand. It is located approximately 50 kilometers north of Christchurch. Waipara and Leithfield are nearby villages.
Ashburton is a town in the Canterbury region on the east coast of the South Island of New Zealand. The third largest centre in Canterbury after Christchurch and Timaru, it is the main centre of Mid-Canterbury. Ashburton is located 80 kilometers south of Christchurch just a little over an hour's comfortable drive. The town is the centre of a rich agricultural and pastoral farming district, part of the Canterbury Plains. It has one large suburb, Tinwald, which is south of the town.
Christchurch is the main city in Canterbury, New Zealand. It lies at the southern end of Pegasus Bay, in the middle of the east coast of the South Island, between Banks Peninsula and the Canterbury Plains. The official "city" is bounded, to the east by the Pacific Ocean coast and the estuary of the Avon and Heathcote rivers, to the south and south-east by the volcanic slopes of the Port Hills, and in the north by the Waimakariri River. The urban area extends a little further. The large number of public parks and many well developed residential gardens with many trees throughout the city have given it the name of The Garden City. Hagley Park and the Christchurch Botanic Gardens are located in the centre of the city, with Hagley Park being a site for sports such as golf, netball, and rugby, and for open air concerts by local bands and the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra. With much of the city being flat and only a few metres above sea level, spectacular views can be obtained from almost any high building. At these low elevations the city appears more like a forest with only a few buildings visible, rather than a major city. The suburbs of Christchurch are: Mairehau; Shirley; Richmond; Avonside; Linwood; Woolston; Opawa; Sydenham; Spreydon; Addington; Riccarton; Ilam; Bryndwr; Merivale; Papanui; St Albans; Burwood; Parklands; Waimairi Beach; Avondale; New Brighton; Bexley; Aranui; South Brighton; Southshore; Bromley; Redcliffs; Sumner; Ferrymead; Heathcote Valley; Huntsbury; Cashmere; Westmorland; Hoon Hay; Halswell; Oaklands; Wigram; Sockburn; Hornby; Islington; Yaldhurst; Russley; Avonhead; Harewood; Bishopdale; Casebrook; Redwood. Christchurch has a number of satellite towns: Belfast; Brooklands; Lyttelton; Tai Tapu; Lincoln; Prebbleton; Templeton; Rolleston.
Darfield is a town in the South Island of New Zealand located 45 kilometres west from the outskirts of Christchurch on The Great Alpine Highway. Darfield is the main town between Christchurch and the West Coast, New Zealand. It is often called "The township under the Nor'west arch", in reference to a characteristic weather phenomenon, which often displays an arch of cloud above an otherwise clear sky to the west of the township. This is caused by the condensation of water particles channeled upwards over the Southern Alps. Darfield lies in the Malvern district's arable and pastoral farming area. It is a gateway to the scenic Waimakariri and Rakaia Rivers and the Southern Alps, and is also a popular lift-off place for hot-air ballooning.
Fairlie is a town in the Canterbury region of the South Island of New Zealand and commonly known as the gateway to the Mackenzie Basin. It was first known as Fairlie's Creek and supposedly named because it reminded early settlers of Fairlie in Scotland.
Geraldine is a town in the Canterbury region on the South Island of New Zealand located about 140 kilometres south of Christchurch, and inland from Timaru, 35 kilometres to the south.
Hanmer Springs is a town in the Canterbury region of the South Island of New Zealand. It is located inland, 65 kilometres southwest from Kaikoura, on a minor road 10 kilometres north off the northern route betweeen Christchurch and the West Coast via Lewis Pass. It is named after the hot springs in the area. There are two skifields, Hanmer Springs Skifield and Mount Lyford.
Kaiapoi is a town in the Canterbury region of the South Island of New Zealand, located close to the mouth of the Waimakariri River and approximately 15 kilometres north of Christchurch.
Kaikoura is a town on the east coast of the South Island of New Zealand located 180 km north of Christchurch. The Kaikoura Peninsula extends into the sea south of the town, and the resulting upwelling currents bring an abundance of marine life from the depths of the nearby Hikurangi Trench. The town owes its origin to this effect, since it developed as a centre for the whaling industry. The name 'Kaikoura' means 'The cooking place of crayfish', and the crayfish industry is a major contributor to the economy of the region. However Kaikoura has now become a popular tourist destination, mainly for whale watching (the Sperm Whale watching is perhaps the best and most developed in the world) and swimming with or near dolphins. There is also a large and readily observed colony of Southern Fur Seals at the edge of the town. It is also one of the best reasonably accessible places in the world to see open ocean seabirds such as albatross. The town has a strikingly beautiful setting, as the Kaikoura mountains, a branch of the Southern Alps come nearly to the sea at this point on the coast.
Spectacular Lake Tekapo is surrounded by golden tussock and snow-capped mountain landscape. The lake was originally a glacial valley and its stunning turquoise-blue colour originates from glacial sediment. There are two major glacier run-offs and six major rivers which run into the lake. Situated to the north of the Mackenzie Basin, the lake is 32 km long, 2000 feet above sea level, and 120 metres deep at its deepest part. There is one island in the middle. Lake Tekapo is located in the heart of New Zealand's South Island. It is approximately halfway between Christchurch and Queenstown, and is close to New Zealand's highest peak Mt Cook.
Leeston is a small town on the Canterbury Plains in the South Island of New Zealand. It is located 30 kilometres southwest of Christchurch, between the shore of Lake Ellesmere and the mouth of the Rakaia River. The town is a farming service centre.
Lincoln is a town in the Canterbury region of the South Island of New Zealand. It is located on the Canterbury Plains to the west of Banks Peninsula, 22 kilometres south of Christchurch. It is the site of Lincoln University.
Lyttelton is a port town located on the north shore of Lyttelton Harbour on Banks Peninsula, 12 kilometres by road from Christchurch on the eastern coast of the South Island of New Zealand. Rapaki and Corsair Bay are popular beach spots. The town is linked to Christchurch by railway and road tunnels through the Port Hills. At 1900 metres length, the Lyttelton Road Tunnel is the country's longest road tunnel. The harbour is an inlet on the north-western side of Banks Peninsula, extending 18 kilometres inland from the southern end of Pegasus Bay. It is surrounded by steep hills, formed from the sides of an extinct volcanic crater, that rise to a height of 500 metres. Several smaller settlements are dotted along the shore of the harbour, notably Governor's Bay and Diamond Harbour. A small island, Quail Island sits in the upper harbour to the southwest of Lyttelton.
Methven is a town in the Canterbury region of the South Island of New Zealand. It is located near the western edge of the Canterbury Plains 35 kilometres north of Ashburton. It is a rural service town and also offers accommodation in the winter for skiers from the nearby Mount Hutt skifield.
The magnificent Southern Alps stretch from Nelson in the north down to Fiordland in the south. In this maze of mountains, Mount Cook stands highest, situated in the Mount Cook National Park. Awarded 'World Heritage' status in recognition of its qualities and rare beauty, the Park covers an area of nearly 7,000 hectares of majestic alpine scenery with more than one third being in permanent snow and glacial ice. The park contains 22 of the 27 peaks over 10,000 feet (3,000 metres) in New Zealand and provides a wonderland for walkers, skiers and mountaineers. A popular way to experience the grandeur of this mountain area is with a helicopter or a fixed wing flightseeing trip. When the Polynesians arrived fresh from the tropical Pacific they risked frostbite and lethal mountain rivers to gaze upon the mountain in awe, naming it Aoraki. Mount Cook was first conquered on Christmas Day in 1894 by Tom Fyfe, George Graham and Jack Clarke, all New Zealanders. The Mount Cook Information Centre provides a fascinating array of historical and contemporary facts about the region. A special feature of this area is the mountain buttercup or Mount Cook Lily with its multitude of white blossoms that grace the land through spring and summer. The Park is also home to the mountain parrot, the kea, and also the yellow-breasted tomtit, tiny rifleman and the native pigeon.
Oxford is a small town serving the farming community of north Canterbury, New Zealand. It is located at the inland edge of the Canterbury Plains, 40 kilometres northwest from Christchurch.
Rangiora is the largest town in north Canterbury of the South Island of New Zealand located 25 kilometers to the north of Christchurch, close to the start of the inland Canterbury route, which skirts the inner edge of the Canterbury Plains, running southwest to Timaru via Oxford and Geraldine.
Temuka is a town on New Zealand's Canterbury Plains, 15 kilometres north of Timaru. It is located at the centre of a rich sheep and dairy farming region, for which it is a service town.
Timaru in south Canterbury, New Zealand, is located 160 kilometres south of Christchurch and 200 kilometres north of Dunedin on the Pacific coast. Caroline Bay is a popular beach area located north of the substantial port facilities. The northern industrial suburb of Washdyke is located at the junction of the main routh into the Mackenzie Basin.
Twizel is a town in the Mackenzie Basin of the South Island of New Zealand. Twizel was built in 1968 to service the Upper Waitaki hydroelectricity scheme and was intended to be removed once the project had been completed, however its residents successfully fought to save the town. Twizel is a service and tourist town for visitors to the area. Nearby Lake Ruataniwha supports rowing, sailing and water skiing.

My wife and I celebrated our 40th anniversary last March and we wanted a very special trip. We contacted Donna Thomas to arrange a trip to New Zealand. We have never used a travel specialist before and were unsure what to expect. Our trip was the trip of a lifetime and was flawless. Donna was wonderful, she spent much time discussing our interests and arranged an incredible trip that showed us so much more on New Zealand than I could have ever done on my own. We had home stays, farm stays, personal guides, and a road map showing hidden gems along the way. I would highly recommend Donna to anyone wanting step out of the ordinary and experience a country in a much more intimate manner than you could ever achieve on one's own.

If you are going anywhere, east, west, north or south, then you will likely enter into the South Islands largest region: The Canterbury region New Zealand. And why would you not want to! This is a place that you can truly surf and ski, all in one day. Target your adrenalin by rock climbing and world-class mountain biking, or endeavour to find the best fish & chips, coffee, restaurant, or bar, all while strolling to the beach or riverside.
This article is dedicated to giving you the best information about the Canterbury region New Zealand, including the best beaches in Canterbury, travel advice, Canterbury walks, where to go, what to see and your ultimate guide to travelling the best region in the South Island- Canterbury! Let’s get stuck in!
The heart region of the South Island needs no introduction. It calls home to some 628,000 of us! Don’t despair, 381,000 of those are in Christchurch alone. There’s plenty of space and room to move through – 45,000 square kilometres! Bordered between Kaikoura in the north, and Timaru in the south, my place of birth. Canterbury cannot be identified by just one title.
Dry rolling hill country? Yep. High country lakes and braided rivers? Oh yeah. Mountains? Are you kidding? Heck yeah! Grassed plains and endless beaches? Yeah, we got that covered too.

Also, home to an extinct volcano, the Canterbury banks peninsula rises out from the flats, to call the likes of quirky towns such as French Akaroa and Lyttleton home, while also the South Islands hub and largest city Christchurch – famous for earthquakes, but now put back together. You can have it all in a place like this, and not have to live on ski bum wages in Canada as I have done!
Do you want dry, sunny days to lay on the beach, or a snowy blizzard to look out to from within a warm Airbnb? Canterbury has both. The Southern Alps protect the eastern region from rain. The East Coast commonly sees rainfall of 600mm annually so it is rather dry!
It can also cause it to be extremely windy, and no doubt you’ll be familiar with the term ‘northwest wind’ soon, which can scale upwards of 80kmph, good for flying that kite huh? It does get a lot of sunshine hours with temperatures 30+ in February not uncommon. Even in winter, you can get crisp clear days starting anywhere from -5 to +15 degrees on the same day.
When to travel? Any time of year! But If you like summer, February is the best month , however, march/April can be gems with little crowds. If you like winter, August is the best month, with the best spring conditions in October.
Canterbury is made up of North, central and southern sub-regions.
In the north, you can find Hanmer Springs and Kaikoura. The Lewis pass is in the Canterbury region which can take you west, and in its own has truly wild landscapes that you no doubt have seen in films.
Central is banks peninsula and Christchurch. You will also find Arthurs Pass here- Home to the native Beech tree and cheeky Kea. Porters pass and the Craigieburn range is the local outdoor spot, with mountain biking, hiking and 5 Canterbury ski fields to choose from. Be sure to check out Lake Coleridge, Mt Summers and the Ashburton lakes too, which are described below!
South Canterbury exists from the main town Timaru, and extends to the great hydro lakes, through to Burkes Pass and the Mackenzie district, where you will find Tekapo, Twizel and Mt Cook- where you’ll no doubt recognise the landscapes from the Lord of the Rings.
Christchurch is the most popular spot in the Canterbury region, New Zealand , with an international airport to fly to/from and main highways leading everywhere. Get ready for some straight roads on the plains!
Christchurch – Hanmer Springs via highway 7 (1.45 hours)
Christchurch – Arthurs Pass via state highway 7 (1.58 hours)
Christchurch – Ashburton Lakes via road state highway 1 south-Thompsons track (1.54 hours)
Christchurch – Tekapo via highway 1-79 Geraldine pass 3 (1.47 hours)
Christchurch – Mt Cook Village via 1-79-8-80 Geraldine pass (333km 4.09 hours)
Christchurch – Timaru via highway 1 south (165km 2.06 hours)
Timaru – Tekapo via highway 8 (106km 1.19 hours)
Timaru – Kurow via highway 1-82 (112km 1.17 hours)

If you asked anyone just a year ago, and Lee’s time while studying there, Christchurch NZ had a lot left desired, but then two major earthquakes would leave anyone a little shaken right? I have lived there for many years, and now it is finally back on its feet, as a major hub, full of life like a brand new city.

I tell people whenever I get the chance and recall a time with my sister standing on the gondola summit above Christchurch city, how lucky we are here. Cyclists grunting uphill, mountain bikers zooming past, climbers scaling cliffs below, runners and walkers out with their dogs. There was even the odd paraglider whisk past, heading down. Not many places in the world call that home.
Christchurch now has the rebuilt CBD and surrounding areas, which includes cutting edge architecture next to the Avon River, where you can check out hundreds of eateries, shops and bars that were missing from the total experience before the earthquakes!
There are now so many things to do in Christchurch and lots of awesome Canterbury walks ! Outlined below are some options for you including free activities in Christchurch, the best Christchurch activities, eateries and more!

One of the few places in New Zealand where you will be greeted with a bonjour over hello is in Akaroa New Zealand. This quirky French town is the gateway to the peninsula, where cruise boats commonly stop in. This adorable little seaside town has the unique French-inspired architecture, bustling little stores, boat cruises to see dolphins ( one of the best things to do in Akaroa) and a scenic drive that you should take your time with. Akaroa is one of the easiest day trips from Christchurch.

New Zealand’s most Iconic lake town, and the most photographed church in the country. Although I don’t recommend taking a swim in the glacier waters (unless you’re a fan of cold water therapy!), It is a beautiful town, and although a major tourist hot spot, you really do need to stop here, especially when you have some local advice! Canals, mountains, trails, oh, and an obvious lake await.
Enjoy the hike up Mt John, where you can get great views of the Mackenzie Basin , and stop in at the Mount John Observatory . It is probably one of the most popular Lake Tekapo walks starting by Tekapo Springs.

You’ve no doubt heard of Wanaka, well Twizel New Zealand could potentially be what Wanaka was like 20 years ago. My sister and I have a total bias to this place. Why? Well, where do we start? This was the destination that Peter Jackson chose in his films (LOTR) for good reason.
Aoraki Mt Cook is within view, as are the vast grassy plains. Hiding up the valleys are lesser-known lakes such as Ohau, where native bush and braided rivers hug the terrain. Twizel is not a place where you ask, “should we do something?” but “What should we do?” Indeed, you do have the paradox of choice here!
Inside you can find fine dining and good food, great beer and friendly locals. Just outside you have four different lakes to choose from, all within 30 minutes of each other. Mountain biking, skiing, boating, swimming, running, rock climbing, camping, hiking, hunting and the world’s largest trout/salmon fishery – what a mouthful! This old hydro construction town is an underrated gem, and people are starting to cotton on to this!

The Mount Cook National Park is the rugged land of ice and rock. Home to New Zealand’s tallest mountain Aoraki, and many other peaks over 3000m. It is also home to the country’s longest glacier. If you’re going anywhere in the South Island or in the Canterbury region, New Zealand , then it’s compulsory to stop here, where there’s plenty of options for the most adventurous or the passive traveller.
Being so close to the towns Tekapo and Twizel, this is an easy day trip, or if you’re like my sister and me, you just keep going back!

New Zealand’s most beautiful hidden region is a real locals secret, where Lake Clearwater, Heron, Emily and Camp make up the Ashburton lakes. If you like wide-open high-country spaces with Lord of the Ring scenery then this is the place to be. Stepping away from the normal luxuries of life, you are rewarded with hiking peaks, swimming and fishing lakes, mountain biking and endless views, and the locals know it!

Arthurs Pass village is in the heart of the Southern Alps, and it’s pretty obvious on arrival. You are surrounded by incredible mountains, steep gorges and old beech forest. It makes you feel small, but the quiet town and ensuring activities are sure to leave you grateful for stopping. Waterfalls and picturesque hikes are the name of the game here!
Arthurs Pass to Christchurch drive takes around 2 hours so it is achievable in a day if you are looking at doing a scenic drive!
