These shorter cruises are great if you'd like to spend a few days in Paris before stepping onto the cruise ship and sailing to three other beautiful towns.

After three days of touring smaller towns, you'll return to Paris, where the Eiffel Tower is visible from the banks of the Seine.

CroisiEurope's Christmas in the Seine Valley cruise departs Dec. 23 in 2024 and 2025. Fares start at $1,560 per person, based on double occupancy.

Best for solo travelers: Tauck's Yuletide Spirit

christmas market cruise hays travel

Solo travelers looking to enjoy a river cruise without the hassle of a single supplement should check out Tauck's Christmas market itineraries. On all European river cruises, including the seven-night Yuletide Spirit: Amsterdam to Brussels cruise, the line waives the single supplement on Category 1 river-view cabins.

If your cruise starts in Amsterdam, you don't have to be on the ship until 4 p.m. so use the morning to walk around town or get tickets to tour the Anne Frank House. On your second day in Amsterdam, visit the Rijksmuseum and take an evening canal cruise with the group. Foodies will love it when the cruise heads to Gouda to explore the history of the city, plus get a tasting of stroopwafels, which are cookie sandwiches invented in the city.

The midpoint of the cruise will bring you to the decision to visit either Ghent, which is one of the oldest cities in Belgium, or Bruges, known for its medieval architecture and beautiful canals. The cruise also visits Antwerp, where you can explore the various Christmas markets that are spread throughout the city. Your trip ends in Brussels, with a whole day to explore the cute squares and charming markets and try local fare.

Tauck offers four December departures of its Yuletide Spirit: Amsterdam to Brussels cruise in 2024 and 2025, meaning the last cruise sets sail after Christmas. The 2024 sailings are either entirely sold out or have limited availability; fares for 2025 cruises start at $4,190 for solo travelers in a Category 1 room, but the majority of those cabins are booked. Your best bet is to wait for Tauck to announce its 2026 departures and book those popular river-view rooms as soon as they become available.

Solo travelers should know that these cabins don't have a balcony and are the smallest on the riverboat at 150 square feet, but you likely won't be spending much time in your room on this sailing. The cruise fare includes all gratuities, private shore excursions, meals, unlimited drinks including premium spirits and basic Wi-Fi, plus airport and train transfers.

christmas market cruise hays travel

Travel to Mount Pilates, where you will ride 7,000 feet up the mountain in a gondola for incredible views before continuing on to Basel, Switzerland, to board your river ship.

Your first stop will be in Germany to visit the Black Forest, where you can learn about local traditions and German winemaking. The next day brings the cruise to Strasbourg, France, where you can tour the La Petite France District and wander through the warm glow of the Christmas market.

Avalon Waterways offers its Festive Time on the Romantic Rhine cruise Dec. 8, 2024. Prices start at $4,958 per person, based on double occupancy. You won't find a 2025 option, but in 2026, two departures on Nov. 20 and Dec. 4 offer starting rates of $5,379 per person.

Fares include meals, drinks during meals and happy hour, Wi-Fi, a library, excursions, bike rentals and a fitness center. Gratuity is not included for hotel stays and meals during the land portion of your trip.

christmas market cruise hays travel

While many river cruises traverse the waters around France, Germany and Austria, AmaWaterways ' Gems of Southeast Europe itinerary takes guests to Bulgaria, Croatia, Hungary, Serbia and Romania. The seven-night cruise sails between Budapest and Giurgiu along the Danube River.

Your first stop will be Mohacs, where you can enjoy the nearby Christmas markets in Pecs or venture to Szekszard for a wine tasting. Day three is split between Vukovar and Novi Sad, where you can explore the historic towns and enjoy the holiday cheer with live music, artisan crafts and delightful bites of food.

Marienplatz Christmas Market

Location: Munich

Dates: November 25–December 24

Why we love it: Munich's Marienplatz Christmas Market is steeped in tradition and musical excellence, featuring everything from choirs to sing-alongs. Packed with 100 stalls of local crafts—homemade gingerbread, nativity woodworking, to name a few—hours could (and should) be spent frolicking from booth to booth. As an added bonus for the kids, ages six through twelve, are invited to dress in angelic costumes for "Himmelswerkstatt," a sequence of guided crafts and workshops.

Trocadéro Christmas Market

Location: Paris

Dates: December 8–January 2

Why we love it: Romantic and indulgent, it's no surprise that the Parisians host a charming holiday market. Lined by an ice rink and backdropped by the Eiffel Tower, this market is ideal for families and couples ready to spend an evening of pure holiday bliss, followed by a lights show. Plan to spend a lot of time in the 16th arrondissement, the western part of Paris.

Old Town Christmas Market

Location: Innsbruck, Austria

Dates: November 15–December 23

Why we love it: The Old Town Christmas Market, tucked away in Innsbruck, Austria, blends peace and artistry. Visitors make their way through the street vendors, with a piping hot cup of Glühwein, or mulled wine, in hand. The famed Goldenes Dachl, or "golden roof," is a must see, a landmark structure located in the Old Town that was decorated with 2,657 fire-gilded copper tiles for Emperor Maximilian I to mark his wedding to Bianca Maria Sforza. The Old Town also sees an occasional surprise visit from Santa Claus.

Yulefest Kilkenny

Location: Kilkenny City, Ireland

Dates: November 30–December 21

Why we love it: The Yulefest in Kilkenny City, about a two hour drive from Dublin, may be small, but it's nothing short of a fairytale. With savory snacks and beer galore, you'll leave in true Irish fashion, eager to return for more. The intimate market allows you to get to know each vendor and expert in their craft. Additionally, the city has a thoughtful schedule, kicking off with an appearance from Saint Nicholas, a Medieval Mile Run, and a series of surprises until the "Festive Finale" just days before Christmas.

Bruges Christmas Market

Location: Bruges, Beligum

Dates: November 23–January 7

Why we love it: Belgium sets the standard for enchanting Christmas markets, and Bruges surpasses it. This is the market to come to on an empty stomach, and satisfy your sweet tooth with mouth-watering delectables, from crispy Belgian waffles to warm chocolates. Once you've hit your sugar quota, the glimmering storefronts will guide your way through the intricate marketplace, leading you to unique souvenirs and jenever, a local gin.

Nyhaven Christmas Market

Location: Copenhagen

Dates: November 17–December 31

Why we love it: Easily one of the most popular European destinations at the moment, Copenhagen boasts art, design, and community. Coincidentally, the city is home to a beautiful waterfront Christmas Market in the city center, attracting a crowd large enough for those wanting to mingle. Bridging connection and Christmastime cheer, the city graciously invites you to celebrate with local businesses camouflaging their shops and outdoor bar seating right onto the cobblestone streets of the market for a fully immersive night.

Plaza Mayor Christmas Market

Location: Madrid

Why we love it: Evolving from the markets of the 17th century, Plaza Mayor reinvents the shopping centre of trinkets and treats. Boasting vibrant nostalgia centered by a vintage carousel, it's everything you'd expect from a Spanish Christmas market, marrying the limits of culinary and design. With architecture mastered from renowned Spanish artists, the breathtaking buildings will shape the frosty nights, the 104 stalls are set up from late November to early January, allowing more than enough time for a Madrid-style Christmas and New Year.

Skansen Christmas Market

Location: Stockholm

Why we love it: Having celebrated Christmas for over 120 years, Skansen has curated the Christmas Market far beyond the average lights and tree decorating. With attendees ranging from Nordic farm animals to visitors from all around the globe, the festival is a perfect glimpse into the Swedish culture. To tie a bow on the Christmas festivities, the market holds an end-of-holiday tradition called Epiphany on January 6, which entails prancing around the city center Christmas tree just the the Who's of Whoville.

Envision yourself amongst the sea of carolers and stall sellers, with stunning views of Edinburgh Castle in the background. Disguised as a true local, you'll have no choice but to rediscover your inner child by jumping aboard the ferris wheel and other carnival rides. It will surely be a braw good time!

Winter Wonderland in Spikersuppa

Location: Oslo

Nine things to do in Moscow at Christmas

Moscow at Christmas

Explore Moscow Christmas Markets

Christmas markets in Moscow

  • In Russia, the official holidays start from January 1 and usually last for 10-12 days. These days all venues of the festival will be very crowded with locals. It might be better to explore Christmas fairs at the end of December.
  •  It's good to know that officials often limit Red Square excess on the night of December 31. A better place to watch the fireworks at night would be neighboring Zaradje Park.

Red Square at Christmas

Practice skating

Skating on Red Square

Enjoy Moscow museums without crowds.

Kremlin at Christmas times

  • It gets dark around 4 pm in December. You'd better plan more outside activities in the morning and visit museums after lunch.
  • On December 31 most museums are open only in the morning, January 1 is a day off in many museums around Moscow.
  • Some museums might be very crowded later in the first week of January during the official Russian holidays. At the start of the New Year between 2–7 January, some museums offer free admission. We'd suggest not going to the most popular ones such as the Space Museum as there might be a long line of people at the entrance.

Watch a mesmerizing ballet performance

The Nutcracker performance

  • The Kremlin Ballet Theatre, which is located right inside the Kremlin. This is the website https://en.kremlinpalace.org/events/ballet
  • Novaya Opera Theatre. The theatre mostly focuses on opera but it also offers high-quality ballet performances.  You can find tickets at a very affordable price. The theatre is very comfortable inside and is located in a cozy Hermitage garden with a skating rink and restaurants. Their website is https://novayaopera.ru/en/afisha-i-bilety/
  • Stanislavsky and Nemirovich-Danchenko Music Theater is another alternative to the Bolshoi and is a good value for money. Both music and dancing are of high quality. The theatre is not as luxurious as the Bolshoi, but very well-organized and comfortable.

What to expect from celebrating Christmas in Moscow

October 4, 2018 by Karen Turner 3 Comments

Last year was a magical Christmas.  Jacob and I visited our dear friend Nikita in Moscow.   Celebrating Christmas in Moscow was magical and one of my favorite parts of spending the holiday season in Russia meant that we got to visit some of the Christmas markets in Moscow, including the Red Square Christmas Market.  Keep reading for tips for attending the Christmas markets in Moscow.

  • 0.1 Which Christmas in Moscow!?

Which Christmas in Moscow!?

Crowds at the Red Square Christmas Market in Moscow, Russia. This Russian Christmas market is worth seeing! #travel #russia #moscow

Whether you’re visiting during Western Christmas or Orthodox Christmas, you’re in luck: You’ll be able to experience a bit of Christmas spirit in Russia. Although Christmas is celebrated in Russia according to the Orthodox calendar, you’ll still find Christmas decorations set up in December in time for Christmas in Western Europe.   These decoration will be up through January, which is when Orthodox Christmas occurs.

Russia has a unique history in terms of Christmas as it was banned during the Soviet period.  Officials tried to combine Christmas into New Year’s Eve, which is a popular family holiday in Russia today.  However, in post-Soviet Russia, Christmas is a big deal.  Many tourists come to Moscow as well as other Russian cities to enjoy the festive atmosphere, shop, and take selfies.

You’ll find Christmas decorations as well as smaller markets all throughout the city.  Each neighborhood typically has a tree as well as some kind of festivities, however the most popular area to visit is along Tverskaya Street.

If you’re planning on visiting Moscow for Christmas, be sure to book your hotel room in Moscow early as this is a popular travel time for Russians.  We waited to book our room until we got the visa documents together  and ended up paying a premium compared to when we first checked prices.

You might be required to have your accommodations booked in order to request a visa.  Some hotels will assist you in getting an invitation letter, if required, for an additional fee.  We stayed at Legendary Historical Hotel Sovietsky , a grand Soviet-era hotel that offered visa assistance.

Not surprisingly, it was chilly in Moscow during Christmas, however the crowds were intense enough that I ended up partially unzipping my jacket!  If you’ll just be enjoying the city center of Moscow, a good pair of boots (or booties) for walking around, a winter jacket, pants (possibly with tight underneath for added warmth), gloves, a hat, and a scarf.  I ended up layering up with a sweater and a t-shirt underneath my jacket.

Avoiding the crowds during Christmas in Moscow

The period between New Year’s Eve and Orthodox Christmas is one of the busiest times for Moscow.  Many Russians will come to the city center to enjoy the spectacular lights and shop.

Avoiding the crowds will prove more difficult than you imagine.  We attempted to go to the Red Square a few times, but ended up being frustrated with the crowds.

The Red Square Christmas Market

The beautifully decorated Red Square Christmas market in Moscow, Russia. This beautiful Russian Christmas market is worth exploring!

The Red Square Christmas market has beautifully decorated stalls, multiple selfie spots, children’s rides, and enough stalls to purchase some unique gifts.  It took us about 1-2 hours to browse the market.

I was a bit put off by how crowded the Red Square Christmas was.  It was a bit chaotic and claustrophobic, however it was definitely worth viewing.  I recommend avoiding wearing backpacks and ensuring that your bag is zips securely as we were warned about pickpockets.

Like Christmas markets elsewhere, you’ll find numerous drinks, including glintwine. Glintwine is the Russian equivalent of gluhwein, a delicious mulled wine made with cloves and oranges.  You’ll also find lots of tea in giant samovars, a great treat during the winter months in Moscow.  Additionally, you’ll find cookies as well as food stands serving typical foods, such as Georgian-style meats.

Souvenirs worth getting from the Christmas Market

Birch is a typical wood from Russia and it is credited for keeping the Soviet army alive during World War II.  (Its bark can be burned for warmth!) You’ll find numerous stalls selling birch souvenirs, including containers for coffee.  I paid about 7 euros for my birch coffee container.  You’ll also find the famous matryoshka dolls, which originate in Sergiev Posad , a great souvenir from Russia.
