These destinations make traveling solo easy — and extra fun.

Traveling alone is all about freedom and independence — freedom to go where you want, when you want, and independence in your ability to visit new places and meet new people without the crutch of a travel companion. It's not for everyone, but those willing to venture off on their own are rewarded with a compromise-free vacation and unforgettable experiences. Exciting things just seem to happen when you're traveling solo.

But where to go? If you're just testing the waters of solo travel, you might want to stay close to home, which is where these U.S. destinations come in handy. Whether you dream of a spa vacation with plenty of time to relax and reset, a trip packed with activities, or a soul-searching expedition, these U.S. destinations cater to the solo traveler, thanks to their ease of transportation and large selection of things to do.

Ready to book your next solo trip? Read on for the best places to travel alone in the U.S.

Naples, Florida

If you have your heart set on a beach vacation, consider Naples, a relatively small community in southwest Florida. There are plenty of ways a solo beach traveler can occupy themselves in Naples. You can check out the beach at Naples Pier, go kayaking in the mangroves , or hit the links at one of the area's 90+ golf courses. If you're looking for an activity that will leave a big grin on your face, book a dolphin watching cruise from Marco Island , just 30 minutes south of Naples. Plus, the city was ranked number one in a recent list of safest places to live the U.S. , thanks to its low crime rates.

Boston, Massachusetts

Boston may be a big city, but it can often feel like a small town. Thanks to its walkability, you'll be able to explore the city's historic center on foot and can take the T, the local subway system, across the Charles River to Cambridge. In Boston, you'll find a wellspring of history and culture in museums like the fun Boston Tea Party Museum and the impressive Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum , the site of one of the world's most famous art heists.

Boulder, Colorado

Those looking for quiet solo travel in the U.S. can spend their days exploring the mountains and hills surrounding Boulder. Eldorado Canyon State Park is just 20 minutes south of downtown, the approximately two-mile trail up Flagstaff Mountain is just 15 minutes to the west, and the iconic Flatirons (red sandstone formations) are less than 10 minutes away by car. And If you're feeling social, head to Pearl Street Mall , a bustling pedestrian-only street with some of the city's best restaurants, shops, and bars.

Portland, Oregon

Not everyone feels comfortable eating out at a restaurant alone, especially when traveling solo, but Portland makes mealtime a nonissue, thanks to its bustling food cart scene. There are many food cart parks scattered about the city where you can go and peruse a diverse offering of cuisine, from pizza to Senegalese, and enjoy your meal in a atmospheric and fun shared space. Food aside, Portland's reliable transportation, great parks, and community vibe make this city an easy choice for people traveling alone. Between the good meals, you can also enjoy the tranquility of the Japanese Garden or browse the shelves at the famous Powell's Books .

Asheville, North Carolina

If your perfect vacation includes hiking and biking during the day and gulping down beers with new friends at night, there's arguably no better place than Asheville, a city situated in North Carolina's Blue Ridge Mountains. Bikers will want to tackle the Blue Ridge Parkway , while hikers can head to the Craggy Pinnacle Trail (an approximately one-mile hike with serious views) or climb Mount Pisgah (2.6 miles round-trip). After a day in the mountains, reward yourself with a beer on the pup-friendly patio at Wicked Weed Brewing .

Sedona, Arizona

Traveling solo may be the only time you're able to truly check out from the grind and relax. That's why spa destinations like Sedona are so perfect for solo travelers. In addition to beautiful scenery, Sedona is packed with spas and wellness offerings. For a full resort experience, book a stay at the Amara Resort and Spa , or test out a few of the city's plentiful day spas: A Spa for You and Sedona's New Day Spa are long-standing favorites.

Charleston, South Carolina

Taylor McIntyre/Travel + Leisure

Art lovers will find themselves in their element in this colorful coastal city in South Carolina. The small city of Charleston is home to over 35 fine art galleries and hosts an Art Walk on the first Friday of every month. If you're hoping to make some art yourself, the French Quarter is sure to inspire, while the city's warm southern hospitality will make you feel right at home. If the temperature is right, you can even take a trip out to Isle of Palms to enjoy some quality time on the beach.

Nashville, Tennessee

If your idea of a dream solo trip is getting out and meeting new people, book a ticket to Nashville and let the city of music connect you to others. The Basement , a live music venue known for its cozy vibes and spacious patio, is a must, as is 3rd and Lindsley . Just don't leave the city without trying the spicy fried chicken at Hattie B's . A trip to Nashville is also a chance to try out one of its best hotels like the classic Hermitage Hotel.

Portland, Maine

This may be the second Portland on the list, but this one has a coastal advantage. From the seaside city you can hop on a ferry or boat charter, or eat your way through the city's best lobster rolls at Luke's Lobster . When you're not out enjoying the water or stuffing your face with deliciously fresh seafood, you can meander in and out of the shops and boutiques at the historic Old Port.

San Francisco, California

When you're traveling solo, public transportation is key (no one wants to foot the bill for a weekend full of Uber rides). That's where cities like San Francisco shine. Between Muni buses, trains, streetcars, and cable cars, you can get to every corner of the city without hopping in a cab. Surrounded by beautiful bay views and offering easy access to experience a Redwood forest in Muir Woods , there are plenty of things to do in and around San Francisco.

Bayfield, Wisconsin

Located on the shores of Lake Superior, and home to quaint B&Bs and beautiful Victorian homes, Bayfield is a warm and welcoming coastal destination and one of the loveliest small towns in the U.S. Solo travelers can roam the intimate downtown or head to the nearby Apostle Islands National Lakeshore , best known for its series of caves that freeze during the winter months.

Carmel-by-the-Sea, California

Just off California's iconic Highway 1 is Carmel-by-the-Sea, a small beach city on the Monterey Peninsula that will capture your heart the moment you see it. Traveling solo is no problem here, as the city offers plenty to do — surfing, sea animals, and a village-style center that feels like it belongs in a storybook. However, solo travelers may feel most at ease exploring the many art galleries like the Carmel Art Association and Bennett Sculpture .

Boise, Idaho

Boise is a paradise for lovers of the outdoors. Solo travelers will find riverside walking and biking trails that run right through town, skiing (in the winter) and hiking (in the summer) at the city's Bogus Basin Mountain Recreation Area , and easy access to mountain towns like McCall and ski areas like the rapidly growing Tamarack Resort .

Savannah, Georgia

 Marje/ Getty Images

Savannah's welcoming nature makes solo travel a breeze. If you're feeling social, join a haunted pub crawl through town or book an architectural tour . And if you're looking for a quiet escape, rent a bike and explore the history-rich city on two wheels. The best time to visit Savannah is in the fall and winter, when the temperatures are cooler and you can embrace the spooky spirit during Halloween when the city goes all out with on-theme activities .

Hot Springs, Arkansas

As you might guess, Hot Springs, Arkansas, is known for its natural hot springs, which have drawn visitors since the early 1900s. For solo travelers, there's nothing like a serene soak in the natural thermal waters found on the historic Bathhouse Row, followed by a refreshing drink of spring water and a lazy hike through the dense woods at Hot Springs National Park . In addition to the gorgeous scenery of the park, you can also discover it's unique history as a wellness destination .

Jackson Hole, Wyoming

Jackson Hole may be home to a world-renowned ski area , mouthwatering cuisine, and high-end galleries, but you'll still find Old West-style bars where cowboys throw back PBRs (check out the Million Dollar Cowboy Bar ). It's the perfect place to throw on a Stetson and dress the part for a night or two. The town itself offers plenty to do when you're not drinking or skiing, like rodeo nights at the Jackson Hole Rodeo and incredible pastries at the James Beard-recognized Persephone Bakery .

Seattle, Washington

Gautier Houba/Travel + Leisure

If you want access to nature without sacrificing big-city amenities, Seattle offers an ideal balance. Spend a couple of days checking out Pike Place Market (don't miss a cup of mac n' cheese from Beecher's ), going to the top of the Space Needle , and visiting the Museum of Pop Culture before hopping aboard a ferry and getting away from it all. From the heart of Seattle, you can take a boat across Elliott Bay to Bainbridge Island and onto Olympic National Park , home to both glacier-capped mountains and 70 miles of wild coastline.

Minneapolis, Minnesota

It's been said that one can hardly be called an architect if they haven't designed something in Minneapolis — the city showcases work from Jean Nouvel, Herzog & de Meuron, César Pelli, and Frank Gehry, among others. The city's love of design is also noticeable in the hotel scene, where sophistication meets Midwestern hospitality. So, while it's perfectly acceptable to wander through the city looking up, you don't want to miss a cruise on one of the famous bike paths, which wind past lakes that are perfect for a dip in the summertime.

Salt Lake City, Utah

It may be Utah's largest city, but Salt Lake City doesn't feel like a giant metropolis. Maybe it's the fact that it's surrounded by mountains or the open expanse of the Great Salt Lake and Antelope Island State Park to the west. Either way, this friendly city has everything a solo traveler could want — great food (check out Feldman's Deli ), plenty of sun-drenched days, and easy access to both the mountains and water. Among the many things to do in town, you will also have your pick of exciting day trips to nearby state parks, or you can use the city as a launchpad to explore Utah's stunning geology at national parks like Zion National Park and Bryce Canyon .

Fort Collins, Colorado

dlewis33/E+/Getty Images

If you're a beer lover, head to Fort Collins, a Colorado town with plenty of heart and really good beer. Start your tour of the city in the taproom of New Belgium Brewing (the company behind Fat Tire) and follow it with a pint at a few lesser-known breweries — we recommend Zwei Brewing Co. , Maxline Brewing , and Black Bottle Brewery . By the end of the day, you'll have your own beer-loving posse to explore the city with. Solo travelers will love the atmosphere of the downtown area, which is so charming it was the inspiration for Walt Disney when designing Main Street, U.S.A. at Disneyland.

Austin, Texas

The quickest way to bond with a stranger? Shared musical taste. Austin has plenty of opportunities to bump into fellow music lovers. Stay on or near South Congress Avenue, where trendy properties like the Hotel Magdalena provide the ideal base for visiting the street's iconic venues. Other ‘hoods you can easily get to include East Austin, booming with hipster bars and food trucks; South Lamar with its great shops; and Rainey Street, beloved among college students. Visit March through November to see the bats flying under the Ann W. Richards bridge — it's one of the best things to do in Austin , as is indulging in the city's incredible food.

Islamorada, Florida

Of all the towns in the Florida Keys , Islamorada has the homiest feel. Locals are happy to regale you with tales of family squabbles and fishing exploits at any of the seaside watering holes. For an elevated dining experience, snag a barstool at Chef Michael’s and order the whole lionfish. It's a big but manageable dish, made from an invasive species that Floridians pride themselves on removing from local waters and serving as a tasty dinner instead. When you're done, rest your head at one of the cozy cottages at Moorings Village.

Louisville, Kentucky

Kentucky is known for its hospitality and Louisville for its bourbon , meaning solo travelers can find good friends and good drinks while exploring this Southern city. NuLu is the most happening neighborhood, but Old Louisville is the place to hunker down if you’re a sucker for history and architecture. Downtown offers new hotels and inventive restaurants, while Butchertown and Germantown pair up-and-coming bars and businesses with impressive vintage architecture.

Marfa, Texas

Artists in search of a solitary life have been drawn to Marfa for decades. Today, the population hovers just under 2,000, but there’s enough art, food, and quirk for a city many times that size. El Cosmico offers outstanding glamping and communal spaces, while art houses like the Chinati Foundation keep visitors entertained. Though it's more than three hours from the closest airport, this flatland village offers progressive galleries, mystifying desert skies, and a sparse beauty that makes it one of the best small towns in Texas .

New York, New York

New York City might be full of crowds, but it’s also a welcoming hub for parties of one. There are sleek hotels with bars that draw worldly travelers and locals, some of the best art and shopping in the world, and more food and drink options than you can fit into a month-long trip. If you need help deciding what to do on your visit, take a look at our three-day weekend guide .

Portsmouth, New Hampshire

New Hampshire is one of the safest states in the country — and solo travelers wanting to enjoy that security will find a great home base in Portsmouth. This waterfront town is one of the state's most pedestrian-friendly communities, and with a colonial heritage that dates back to the 1600s, it's fantastic for history buffs. Portsmouth knows its food, as is perhaps best showcased in the dozen oyster farms active offshore in the Great Bay. Sample their best bivalves at The Franklin, an upscale seafood joint run by James Beard-nominated chef Matt Louis.

San Diego, California

San Diego combines the laid-back vibes of SoCal with the multicultural energy of a city located right on the Mexican border. From mild weather and great surfing to vibrant West Coast sunsets, it has lots to offer, making it a great place to spend a few days. Opportunities for hiking and watersports abound, while coastal areas like La Jolla and Del Mar offer a bevy of chic hotels where a solo traveler can catch some oceanside R&R.

Santa Fe, New Mexico

Solo travelers in search of spiritual healing should look no further than Santa Fe . Book a night at Ten Thousand Waves, an upscale lodge inspired by Japanese hot spring resorts and decked out with secluded soaking tubs. Downtown, you’ll find historical landmarks, handmade tchotchkes, and restaurants serving delectable Southwestern food. Beyond the adobe architecture and unique attractions, the best thing you can do in Santa Fe is meet its colorful characters.

Washington, D.C.

Museums are best explored alone, and in Washington, D.C. , you have more than 20 to choose from—many of which are free. The District also has a hot food scene, and as a solo diner, you'll have the best shot at getting into the most highly coveted spots. To get far away from D.C.’s political crowds, head to a hip residential neighborhood like Shaw, where you can imbibe at Maxwell Park Wine Bar or catch a show at the Howard Theatre.

Best solo trips in the U.S.

1.  nashville, tn.

Nashville, TN

Let your love of music—and hearty Southern cooking—guide your trip through Nashville . For a toe-tapping good time, head to the Basement and possibly catch a 'secret' show from a national headliner in an intimate setting. Before the music, fill up with some finger-licking good Tennessee pork shoulder at Jack’s Bar-B-Cue , where you’ll make friends while waiting in long lines (trust us, it’s totally worth it) or test your limit for spicy food at Prince’s Hot Chicken Shack or Hattie B’s . Celebrate a successful solo sojourn by ordering a cocktail at White Limozeen , the pink-hued, Dolly Parton-themed rooftop bar atop the Graduate Nashville .

2.  Marfa, TX

Marfa, TX

Independent travelers with an artistic side need to visit Marfa, which has quickly become a top destination for artists looking for a productive retreat. Miles away from any other city and hours from the nearest airport, this teeny-tiny small town (population: less than 2,000) in the desert boasts large-scale art installations (including the Instagram-famous Prada Marfa one), the Chinati Foundation art museum, and a historic army fort . Unsurprisingly, there aren’t many hotels here; however, we recommend Hotel Saint George , a minimalist-inspired boutique hotel with a bustling lobby bar and stylish interiors.

3.  New York, NY

New York, NY

While being alone in a city as densely populated as the Big Apple might seem lonely, we guarantee it’ll feel quite freeing in no time. Get in a New York state of mind while heading to the city’s fabulous museums (including the MoMA , The Met , and the Whitney ), gorgeous public spaces and phenomenal performances on Broadway or at the Metropolitan Opera. Don’t forget to get a taste of the world-renowned Brooklyn food scene , and never fear going to a restaurant or bar to dine solo—in New York, that’s standard fare. Make SoHo your home base for exploring by staying at the design-centric Crosby Street Hotel , where guests and locals can mingle throughout the chic public spaces.

4.  Boulder, CO

Boulder, CO

Along this four-block-long pedestrian-friendly hotspot, you’ll find a slew of shopping, drinking, and dining options .

Portland, OR

Portland's laid-back vibes and numerous attractions make it ideal for a solo trip. Join fellow foodies as you sample your way through SE Division Street, including a savory breakfast at Pine State Biscuits and a creamy milkshake from Fifty Licks . Then, retreat to nature with a hike through Forest Park ; alternatively, stroll among thousands of flowers in the International Rose Test Garden . Looking to make new friends? Try hitting up a concert at local favorite Mississippi Studios or grab a beer at the city's many breweries. After an action-packed day, retreat to your room at The Nines , conveniently located downtown.

6.  Asheville, NC

Asheville, NC

Nestled in the Blue Ridge Mountains, this dynamic North Carolina city is a favorite among artists and outdoor lovers alike. The tranquil waters of the French Broad River, located within the city limits, are perfect for a kayak trip, while the nearby mountains offer plenty of great hikes and look-out spots for photographers and nature enthusiasts. If you want a more refined experience, check out the palatial Biltmore Estate , America's largest privately owned house. You can even spend the night here: Three properties can be found within the 8,000-acre grounds. Beer enthusiasts will also love it here: Asheville has more breweries per capita than any other city in America.

7.  Boston, MA

Boston, MA

While Boston might loom large in American history (it is the oldest city in New England, after all), you can walk the narrow winding streets and explore the relatively small center in a day. The nearly 400-year-old town is full of hidden treasures that can be discovered on a self-guided walking tour. Tired of trekking on foot? Try one of the trolley tours—the guides are top-notch, and you might just make some friends while aboard the bright vehicles. Also, history buffs will especially appreciate staying at The Liberty , a 19th-century-era jail-turned-luxury hotel.

8.  Bozeman, MT

Bozeman, MT

Even when you're alone in Bozeman, you're never lonely. The city is beloved not just because it's the perfect home base for solo activities like hiking, skiing, and horseback riding but also because the scene in town boasts interesting museums, distilleries, breweries, and restaurants. When you've had your fill of Palisade Falls, the Gallatin Canyon, or Bridger Bowl , stroll around the laid-back town's historic brewery sector or dig into the heritage of this wild northern landscape at the Museum of the Rockies before heading back to your room at the upscale Kimpton Armory Hotel Bozeman .

9.  Chicago,IL

Chicago,IL

With top-notch museums and parks and a public transportation system that rivals any other across the country, Chicago is a winning bet for a vacationer still unsure about the pros of solo traveling. Indulge in some retail therapy along the Magnificent Mile (North Michigan Avenue) and visit an amazing spa for some much-needed R&R. Along the Magnificent Mile, you’ll also find a slew of splurge-worthy stays, including The Peninsula. In terms of entertainment, you’ll have plenty of options to choose from. Check out the city’s top comedy clubs , including The Second City and the Laugh Factory . Or, if it’s postcard-worthy views you’re after, make your way to one of the city’s many rooftop bars .

10.  Seattle, WA

Seattle, WA

Make sure to pack a comfy pair of shoes when visiting the city’s top attractions , including the Space Needle , Pike Place Market , Fremont , and Pioneer Square . Art lovers will also appreciate a stay at Hotel Max , followed by visits to Chihuly Garden & Glass , the Seattle Art Museum (SAM), and the Frye Art Museum . Before you skip town, grab a cup of the world-famous coffee from a local café (we recommend Elm Coffee Roasters ) and hop on one of the Puget Sound ferries to take in the scenic landscape, including the skyline, waterfront, and, in the hazy distance, Mount Rainer.

11.  San Francisco, CA

San Francisco, CA

In a city that fully embraces free spirits, your desire to fly through local museums, restaurants, and eclectic neighborhoods solo will see you fit right in. Tourist sights include the Golden Gate Bridge, Alcatraz Island , and hopping aboard one of San Francisco’s historic cable cars. Once you've checked those off your list, explore one of the city's charming neighborhoods, such as Hayes Valley, Noe Valley or Pacific Heights. Try the Proper Hotel, which features a swanky rooftop bar, for accommodations.

12.  Florida Keys, FL

Florida Keys, FL

If it’s sunny days, warm temperatures, and turquoise water you’re after, look no further than this laid-back locale. Rent a bike and take a leisurely ride around the Keys, stopping at cafés and shops along the way. In the afternoons, head for the beach with a book and get ready to meet fellow travelers with a colorful cocktail in hand at the beachfront bars. If you want ultimate peace and seclusion, head straight to Little Palm Island , a private island resort about 30 minutes away from Little Torch Key via boat.

Art enthusiasts should visit the magnificent Barnes Foundation and the sprawling galleries at the Philadelphia Museum of Art . Foodies, on the other hand, will appreciate the city’s booming culinary scene , including top restaurants like Laser Wolf and Vernick Food and Drink—just be sure to save room for a cheesesteak or two.

16.  Detroit, MI

Detroit, MI

Formerly down-and-out Detroit has experienced quite the renaissance in recent years. Today, the city is a dynamic canvas for art, music, and thought. Hoof it around the Grand River Creative Corridor , the Dequindre Cut Greenway , and the so-called Guggenheim Ghetto to take in some incredible street art at your own pace, or head to landmarks of Tha D's Motown heritage like the Motown Museum and the homes of hitmakers Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, and Aretha Franklin. When you've worked up an appetite, follow your nose for some Detroit-style pizza at Loui's or Polish dumplings at Pietrzyk Pierogi . Finally, rest your head at the chic, centrally located Detroit Foundation Hotel , so you’re never too far from all the action.

17.  San Diego, CA

San Diego, CA

San Diego is all about the beach, surf, and California burritos. The 1,200-acre Balboa Park deserves a full day (or two) of your attention. Here, you’ll find gardens, hiking trails, museums, and the world-famous San Diego Zoo . After a day of museum hopping and wildlife spotting, you’re sure to work up an appetite. So, make your way over to the Gaslamp Quarter neighborhood and take your pick of eclectic eats, including American Junkie for pub grub, the Butcher’s Cut Steakhouse for top-notch chops, Asti Ristorante for Italian fare, and Bang Bang for fresh sushi. Stay close to all the action (or, in this case, incredible eats) by booking a room at the Andaz San Diego .

18.  Phoenix, AZ

Phoenix, AZ

Excellent eats, stunning desert surroundings, and gorgeous sunny weather: Expect all this and more in Phoenix. While visiting Arizona’s capital city, take advantage of the plentiful hiking opps, including Papago Park, Camelback Mountain  and Phoenix Mountains Preserve . Later, bar-hop your way through downtown Phoenix ( Khla , Barcoa Agaveria  and Baby Boy are a few of our favorites). Finally, catch up on some R&R at the tranquil Royal Palms Resorts & Spa , where you can lounge by the pool, people-watch in lush courtyards, hit the spa, and take cocktail-making classes—all while admiring beautiful flora and Camelback Mountain in the distance.

13 Perfect Weekend Trips for Solo Female Travelers

06/16/2023 by Kristin Addis

Looking for a solo weekend getaway that’s easy to reach, easy to love, and easy to navigate? Are you hoping for plenty of things to do that are enjoyable if you’re solo, but also might introduce you to locals and fellow travelers?

I’ve traveled to over 65 countries  over the past decade, most of them alone, before coming home and exploring my home country solo, spending months in various states around the US to really get to know them.

The following are a few of my favorite weekend getaways for solo female travelers, mostly in the western USA:

Table of Contents

1. Maui, Hawaii

weekend trips for solo female travelers hawaii

While Maui is more of a ‘long weekend’ option, the island has so much natural beauty and myriad of activities, it’s worth the effort to get to. Start with an afternoon sunbathing anywhere on Maui’s 30 miles of beach, then try an ocean activity like surfing lessons , snorkeling , or windsurfing. Explore the coves and tide pools at Kihei Beach or the natural pool surrounded by a lava rock wall at Launiupoko Beach Park in West Maui. Browse local surf shops in small towns like Lahaina and Kihei, and stop for shave ice as often as you can.

Go ziplining high above the island’s incredible terrain, or take a whale-watching cruise to see migrating humpback whales. Mountain bike down a volcano, learn about Hawaii’s marine environment on a kayak, canoe, or snorkeling eco-tour, or drive the breathtaking Road to Hana . At the end of the day, enjoy a delicious seafood dinner and the beautiful island sunset. Maui is truly the perfect destination for a simultaneously exciting and restful solo getaway. Read more here for the best things to do as a solo female traveler in Maui.

2. Boise, Idaho

idaho road trip

Boise is so unexpectedly cool, I was blown away by all there is to do and see there. Plus, it’s so friendly, so as a solo traveler I enjoy myself there. First, head downtown to Freak Alley for some seriously cool street art. Just around the corner, to places with delicious eats, are Guru Donuts, which has vegan options, and Lemon Tree Co. for some delicious sandwiches and salads. For sunset, head out to Camel’s Back Park or even out to Bogus Basin for an even better view.

If you’re keen, the drive between Boise and Stanley , just a few hours away, is stunning and Stanley is an adorable little town. For outdoorsy types, it’s worth heading out for some beautiful hikes in the Sawtooth Mountains and soaking in the hot springs on the way. You can read more about the hot springs here .

Stay: The Modern Hotel downtown is walking distance from most of the things mentioned above, and is a funky, comfortable place to stay.

Getting there: Boise Airport is easy to fly into, with several rental car options right near baggage claim. If you do decide to head out and explore the surroundings, always keep an eye out for deer!

3. Seattle, Washington

weekend trips for solo female travelers Seattle

One of the go-to destinations of the Pacific Northwest, Seattle has both a beautiful waterfront area as well as a great downtown feel, complete with skyscrapers and classy hotels. A proper weekend in Seattle involves some exploring of both. Start by taking a harbor cruise to get a great tour of the whole city from the water. Then, work your way inland by stopping at Pike Place Market, a huge indoor-outdoor market full of flower booths, fresh fish stalls, and delicious lunch spots which is an essential part of Seattle’s culture and character. (Interestingly enough, the very first Starbucks was born here!) After you’ve had your foodie fix, spend some time walking around downtown, which is full of cool shops, cafes, bars, and even a few street musicians! Or, catch a Mariners’ baseball game at T-Mobile Park if you want to spend a low-key afternoon like a local.

Want to take in a great view of the city? Hang out at Kerry Park, a hilltop spot in the Queen Anne neighborhood on the west side of downtown. For even better views, head up to the top of the Space Needle and look down through the rotating glass-bottom floor more than 500 feet above the ground. While you’re in this area (referred to as Seattle Center), pay a visit to the Museum of Pop Culture and then to Chihuly Garden and Glass, an exhibit of glass art installations set inside a botanical garden. Before you leave, be sure to eat some delicious fresh seafood at any of Seattle’s great restaurants

Stay: The modern and centrally located Motif Seattle is also a great option for taking on the city.

Getting there: Fly into Seattle-Tacoma International Airport and rent a car to get you to and from the city. While much of Seattle is walkable, you might need the car to get you to a few destinations a bit more spread out from the city center.

4. Bend, Oregon

weekend trips for solo female travelers Oregon

The Northwest town of Bend, Oregon is a small slice of paradise for anyone who loves the great outdoors. Referred to as “the mountain town that has it all,” there is no shortage of wonderful experiences in Bend. For example, the nearby Deschutes River offers a plethora of river activities like canoeing , kayaking , stand-up paddle boarding, and tubing. You can even go white water rafting, which is a great way to meet other travelers and adventure junkies! Bend is also home to a 65-mile span of forest running trails called the Bend Urban Trail System. When it snows, Mt. Bachelor has the driest powder in the Northwest for skiing, snowboarding and snowshoeing . And believe it or not, Central Oregon’s temperate climate ensures that the hiking and biking in Bend is great year-round. Other activities in Bend include taking a helicopter aerial tour of the region (or take a 66-mile road trip ) and hanging out in the Old Mill District, two old lumber mills turned into the city’s hub for shopping and dining.

What’s more, Bend has been nicknamed “Beer Town USA” for its huge number of breweries. (In fact, Bend is home to more breweries per-capita than any other city in Oregon, third in the USA!) If you want to make a go at trying all 18 of them, embark on the Bend Ale Trail Beer Tour, where you collect stamps from each brewery you visit in a quest to win cool souvenirs from the Bend Visitor Center. Or, hop aboard the Bend Brew Bus for a guided tour of some of the best spots in Bend, complete with tastings and appetizers.

Stay: The beautiful Riverhouse on the Deschutes is cozy, spacious, and even pet-friendly.

Getting there: Fly into Redmond Municipal Airport and rent a car to drive the 20 miles south down Highway 97 to Bend.

5. Rocky Mountain National Park, Colorado

weekend trips for solo female travelers Colorado

If you’re looking for a peaceful solo weekend in nature, consider Rocky Mountain National Park . The wildlife like to come out in the spring. If you visit in the summer, you’ll have excellent hiking to various lakes, camping and mountain-biking. The crowds will be smaller in the fall, and in the winter, you can enjoy snowshoeing, cross-country skiing and ice fishing. There are all sorts of terrains, suitable for any experience level, and the views are truly rejuvenating!

You’ll want to make the visitor’s center your first stop because you can pick up hiking trail maps, learn about the area and plan the rest of your stay accordingly. If you decide to roadtrip here through part of Colorado to get to the national park, the Trail Ride Road will take you right through, connecting the towns of Estes Park and Grand Lake. Be sure to bring a jacket no matter what time of year you visit, as well as binoculars, hiking shoes and a travel pack.

Stay: In Estes Park you could stay at this adventure hostel , or a Mongolian Mountain Yurt . In Grand Lake, there are some campgrounds or the Grand Lake Lodge .

Getting there: Fly to Denver International Airport and rent a car to Estes Park (an hour and a half away) or Grand Lake (three hours). You don’t have to drive through the entire park to experience its full beauty.

6. Santa Barbara, California

weekend trips for solo female travelers California

Often referred to as the American Riviera, Santa Barbara has so much to offer a female solo traveler. From the trendy Funk Zone neighborhood and shopping on State Street to hanging out on the beautiful beaches and strolling down the pier, there are countless things to do in SB . Try one of the hikes up in the mountains, like 7 Falls or Lizard’s Mouth, or go up to the hilltop ruins of Knapp’s Castle to watch a colorful sunset.

If you love history, head uptown to check out the Santa Barbara Mission, or climb to the top of the courthouse’s bell tower for a fantastic 360-degree view of the entire city. For a slow afternoon, rent a bike and cruise around the downtown and waterfront areas for fantastic scenery and a great atmosphere. You could even consider spending a Saturday morning exploring the farmers’ market two blocks off State Street! Regardless of your choice of activities, you are bound to have a great solo weekend in Santa Barbara .

Stay: The Wayfarer and Hotel Santa Barbara are both great options if you want to stay in the heart of the city. Or, check out this Mission Canyon studio up in the hills or this downtown cottage , both available on Airbnb. If you’d like to camp, El Capitán State Beach , located 20 miles outside downtown, is a great option.

Getting there: The Santa Barbara Airport is small and easy to navigate. Rent a car and you’ll be set for the weekend!

7. Capitola, California

weekend trips for solo female travelers California

Nestled six miles east of Santa Cruz lies the quaint, sleepy beach town of Capitola. Its friendliness and charm make it a perfect destination for a girl’s solo weekend trip . The town is home to both the Capitola Art and Wine Festival and the Capitola Beach Festival, taking place in mid- to late September.

Hang out on the wide stretch of beach, take a surf lesson, or rent a stand-up paddleboard. When you get hungry, grab a massive slice of pizza from Pizza My Heart, a hole in the wall which makes such delicious pizza that it led to a chain of 24 other locations throughout California. The downtown area of Capitola, called Capitola Village, offers tons of unique shops and restaurants to explore. The Capitola Historical Museum even offers free walking tours around town. Once you’ve done all you wanted to do in Capitola, take a day trip to the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk. This classic pier carnival has been around since 1907, offering plenty of rides, games, and delicious fair food. Sometimes the Boardwalk even offers free movies or concerts on the beach

Stay: Stay closer to the beach at the charming Capitola Hotel .

Getting there: The nearest airport is Norman Y. Mineta San Jose International Airport. From there, rent a car and drive the 35 miles down CA-17 South to Capitola.

8. San Diego, California

weekend trips for solo female travelers San Diego

San Diego is special in that it has a unique way of combining city life with Southern California beach life. There aren’t too many places where you can have both skyscrapers and wide spans of ocean! Because of this great pairing, San Diego is just packed with fun things to do. Whether you choose to explore the historic Old Town area, catch a Padres baseball game at Petco Park, or simply lay on the beach and soak up the sun, it is tough to get bored in San Diego.

One must-do: take a trolley to the Gaslamp Quarter and go on a haunted walking tour . This 16.5-block area at the heart of downtown is often referred to as San Diego’s “urban playground” for its abundance of dining and nightlife (read our tips for staying safe ). Also, be sure to set aside a few hours to explore the lush grounds of Balboa Park , full of gardens, museums, and the world-famous San Diego Zoo . Go shopping downtown at Seaport Village (14 acres of waterfront retail therapy), or grab some snacks and head to La Jolla Cove for a picnic, a kayak through the caves , or a picturesque afternoon at the beach!

9. San Francisco, California

Bay bridge baker beach

San Francisco is one of the most well-known cities on the entire West Coast, and for good reason. This bustling “City by the Bay” is full of diversity and excitement, and promises any solo traveler a weekend full of unique experiences. Start by checking out the de Young Museum in Golden Gate Park , and explore the park’s different gardens while you’re there. Adjacent to the park lies the Haight-Ashbury neighborhood which maintains its historical 1960s hippie vibes and is full of cool restaurants and bars, record shops, and vintage shopping. Check out the incredible architecture at the Palace of Fine Arts, and then explore the Presidio, a 1,500-acre national park. For a great view of the Golden Gate Bridge , head to Baker Beach (on the west side of the Presidio) where you’ll also have beautiful scenery of South Bay. You can also go on a bay cruise and visit Alcatraz .

Drive down the crazy twists and turns of the world-famous Lombard Street, then head to the top of Coit Tower in the Telegraph Hill neighborhood for beautiful views of the city. If you’re looking for that classic downtown feel, spend some time shopping in Union Square. If you plan your SF trip accordingly, you can catch a Giants baseball game at Oracle Park or even attend the yearly Outside Lands Music and Arts festival in early August!

Stay: While a hotel in SF is more expensive, places like the Grand Hyatt San Francisco offer a glamorous city experience.

Getting there: Fly into San Francisco International Airport and take BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit) from the airport into the city. Use Muni, the bus and metro system, as well as San Francisco’s famous cable cars to get around the city so that you don’t have to rent a car and drive in the crazy city traffic. If there is somewhere that you simply can’t reach with public transportation, taxis are readily available throughout the city.

10. Big Sur, California

mcway falls

25 miles south of the city of Carmel, Big Sur is where waterfalls and seaside cliffs meet redwoods and mountains. Big Sur is home to five state parks, two state nature reserves, and Los Padres National Forest, so there is no shortage of incredible sights and outdoor activities. Perhaps start a road trip with Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park, which has seven different hiking trails leading to coves, waterfalls, creeks, and forests. Pfeiffer Beach is home to purple-tinted sand, tide pools, and the famous Keyhole Arch, which is breathtaking at sunset when the light shines through it. Explore the groves and meadows of Andrew Molera State Park by foot, bike, or even horseback, then, go for a surf at the park’s beach, which is rumored to be one of Big Sur’s best surf spots.

Check out McWay Falls, an 80-foot waterfall onto a small beach with bright teal waters, or drive down the coast along the scenic Highway 1. Go beachcombing for sand dollars at the aptly-named Sand Dollar Beach, and follow its short trail up to the bluffs to look for migrating whales. Be sure to see Bixby Creek Bridge , a 260-foot high and 700-foot long bridge stretching between two rugged hilltops high above the coastline. Finally, when all of your adventuring through mountains, forests, oceans, beaches, creeks, rivers, and waterfalls is done for the day, retire to a campsite among tall redwoods or overlooking the Pacific Ocean to rest for another day of exploring.

Stay: One great campsite is the Fernwood Resort along the Big Sur River. It offers several different options for camping, including traditional camping, RV camping, cabins, and even “glamping”! Fernwood also provides access to a variety of beach, redwood, and river hiking trails. Or, for something more rustic, stay at Deetjen’s Big Sur Inn , which dates back to the 1930s.

Getting there: If you plan on flying to Big Sur, the nearest airport is Monterey Regional Airport. You’ll have to rent a car and drive down Highway 1 until you reach the part of Big Sur you wish to visit.

11. New Orleans, Louisiana

weekend trips for solo female travelers New Orleans

NOLA is special because it feels like a piece of the past, complete with streetcars and an architectural style that you won’t find anywhere else. New Orleans offers all kinds of things to do (here’s our NOLA itinerary ), from trying incredible French-Creole or vegan cuisine to soaking in the city’s history and culture. Start with one of New Orleans’s many museums, like the New Orleans Jazz Museum or the Mardi Gras Museum of Costumes and Culture (which includes an interactive Mardi Gras costume closet). For another fun solo experience authentic to New Orleans , you can get your tarot cards read !

Take a walking tour of some of the historic plantations around New Orleans, like Whitney and Oak Alley . Then, spend time shopping and wandering through the French Quarter , where you can also try the famous beignets and a cafe au lait at Café du Monde, which has been in New Orleans since 1862. Check out the French Market, America’s largest and oldest open-air market, to browse the work of dozens of artisans. Or, explore the quirky, artistic Bywater District , where you can rent a bike and take a ride along the Mississippi through Crescent Park. End the day by listening to live music on Frenchmen Street (be sure to read our recommended packing list for what to wear).

Stay: This charming Airbnb , located only a half-block from the French Quarter, would make a great home base for a weekend in New Orleans. Or, try the beautiful (and affordable) International House Hotel less than a mile from the French Quarter for that classic New Orleans feel. Chicago is a very enriching, and also affordable city for a weekend vacation. As with many other U.S. cities, there is a relatively high crime rate, so be sure to check out these safety tips from a local before you go. The weather in Chicago can also be somewhat unpleasant at times, but you can still visit at any time of year and have a full schedule if you know what you want to do and pack accordingly (read our article on the best time of year to visit Chicago ).

You can kayak in the Chicago River, go on food tours, enjoy beaches on Lake Michigan, walk through the zoo, go biking on 606, and of course get a selfie at the Bean, or any number of other year-round things to do . Some free activities include volunteering at a community garden, strolling through the streets, visiting museums, go to a summer street festival, and learning about sustainability.

Stay: This hostel at Lincoln Park (a charming area) includes breakfast, or you could stay at an Airbnb in LGBTQ+ friendly Lakeview , but there are several neighborhoods worth exploring , especially if you are visiting Chicago for a particular vibe.

Getting there: Fly into Midway and then hop on the Orange Line L to get downtown. The L line is the best way to get around the city once you get there.

Would love to see more posts like this but for other parts of the country. The west coast isn’t really a destination for a weekend due to the distance for me.

How about one focused on the midwest, one for the east coast and one for the south?

07/04/2019 at 3:55 pm

Um, way to be west coast biased? East Coast cities would make great solo travel destinations! NYC, Boston, Philly, DC, Nashville, and I’m sure more. Chicago and St Louis area great mid-west cities as well.

Kristin says

07/07/2019 at 9:13 am

LOL it’s where I’m from. I haven’t been to most of the cities you listed but am working on it.

07/11/2019 at 9:25 pm

Since people brought up the other parts of the US: 1. Weekend trips for the East Coast: Myrtle Beach, SC to Wilmington, NC (Grand Strand) for nice sandy, affordable beaches with warm water or Charleston, SC/Savannah, GA for more culture and history (plus some nice beaches too, some more exclusive and in the case of near Savannah, less commercialized and more natural and raw). If want to make it a four day weekend and fly for those in the Northeast, add Florida in there. Kristin’s been to Ft. Myers, can also try the other coast like Palm Beach. For those living in the Mid-Atlantic or Northeast, there is Kristin’s favorite of Cape Cod (I would through Boston in there), but also NYC, Jersey Shore, Washington D.C. (four day weekend for sure). Lastly, you have the Appalachian Trail accessible within a weekend drive to anywhere in the East (why I didn’t add VT/NH/ME specifically) for the mountain experience.

2. Weekend trips Midwest: Also, could reach the Appalachian Trail somewhere within a day or two drive. Or you have some favorites from Kristin’s past lists of Minneapolis (can’t forget St. Paul), Bayfield, WI (See 15 Best Places..). WI and MN are among my favs in the Midwest. Chicago-Lake Michigan, or outdoorsy fun in the Ozarks of MO/AR. For those into country music, Nashville. I really enjoyed Pittsburgh a lot too and Niagara Falls (midwest-east?, depending on who you ask!).

And the US is so big, it can go on and on with hundreds of off the beaten path places I’ve been. Hope one day Kristin can visit all 50 states. Each one has got special things to offer.

Lastly, for those who take road trips, if you have more like a week, try experiencing at least a good portion if not all of historical Route 66 from Los Angeles to Chicago. It goes through many interesting places and cities like St. Louis, the Ozarks, Albuquerque, Flagstaff too. For us Easterners, there is US Highway 1, but to go from Key West to Fort Kent, ME would take a month and some of this route is boring, so don’t suggest doing that! 🙂 But going to Key West is cool. I have the “mile marker 0” of US Highway 1 in an old photo album.

15 Best Singles Holidays

Written by Freddy Sherman Updated Jan 3, 2022

It can be hard out there for a solo traveler. Singles holidays, whether taken on your own or with friends, normally require a few essential elements to be a success. The destination has to be relatively easy to get to and has to offer a lot of things to do. Sometimes, you want to go out and meet people, and many cities and neighborhoods offer endless places to do that.

Many hotels cater to single travelers and plan group outings, meals, and other activities to bring people together. Good hotels for solo holidays also offer lively social spaces , where you mix and mingle with other guests.

Some solo travelers want to stay on their own and seek a safe experience where they can venture out, night or day, and explore a destination. They want hostels or hotels that provide smaller rooms, and restaurants that welcome solo diners.

Some single vacationers may prefer the lively atmosphere of an all-inclusive Caribbean singles resort. Others may like an activity-filled visit to a boutique hotel that caters to solo travelers, like The Mistral on the Greek island of Crete.

For ideas on other great places to visit as a solo traveler, see our list of the best singles holidays.

Formentera, Spain

Crete, greece, limoux, france, brooklyn, new york, waikiki, hawaii, sydney, australia, vancouver, canada, cusco, peru, marrakech, morocco, turks & caicos, palm springs, california, u.s. virgin islands, mexico city, mexico, map of singles holidays.

Calo de Mort, Formentera

One of the best trips for singles is a getaway to Formentera. The smallest of the Spanish Balearic Islands is a much quieter, more laid-back destination than its neighbor Ibiza. A visit here makes for a great solo holiday and allows you to relax, enjoy the outdoors, and partake in a bit of nightlife if that's your thing. If you want to experience Ibiza's extreme nightlife, just hop on the ferry.

Access to Formentera is easy via the ferry from Ibiza . The trip takes about 25 minutes, and a ferry leaves about every 30 minutes. Ferries run all year long, but there are later departures in summertime, so you can spend the evening in Ibiza, then return back to Formentera.

Es Pujols is a good area for single travelers. There are many accommodation options (from budget to not-so-budget) here, along with a lot of restaurants. There's a cool boardwalk and beach where it's easy to make new friends. You can rent a bicycle and get to many other places on the island as it's very flat.

Waterfront cafés in Chania, Crete

Visitors to this idyllic Greek island have a hotel option only available to single travelers. The Mistral is unique in that, as the hotel promotes, it's a " family-excluding hotel run by a family that treats its single guests like family."

The singles resort only welcomes solo travelers and has a range of activities and amenities geared just to them. Each night, guests are treated to a four-course communal meal , highlighted with fresh, local products. The meal helps bring people together and creates a community atmosphere for the individual travelers.

The Mistral is a three-minute walk from the beach, in the historic town of Maleme , which is on the northwest coast of the island. It's a short bus ride from Chania, Crete's second largest city, and the hotel makes all the travel arrangements for its guests in advance. The majority of the 33 rooms have views of the sea, and the singles resort's reasonably remote location means you can also keep to yourself and have a nice quiet getaway. There are sun terraces, two swimming pools, and a large outdoor Jacuzzi tub.

Bridge over the Aude River in Limoux

La Maison Blanche is a friendly bed and breakfast in the southern French city of Limoux , which goes out of its way to cater to solo travelers. With five rooms accommodating up to 30 guests, it always offers a personal, intimate experience. The dog-friendly guesthouse was created in a three-story townhouse first built in 1805 yet recently renovated to a modern luxury standard.

The owners really focus on English-speaking guests yet offer an immersive French experience, so you can learn some language while vacationing. They have all kinds of activities and group trips to encourage the guests to get to know each other . Trips include excursions to local restaurants, weekly food markets, and specialty shops, hikes, bike rides, and other outdoor stuff like kayaking. Beyond welcoming guests, the owners can help with practical info like how to move to France, how to work in France, and other logistic details. The townhouse has a large courtyard in the rear, and the owners frequently hold potluck dinners, where each guest brings their favorite dish to a communal meal .

Limoux is an excellent home base to explore southern France and nearby Spain. You don't even need a car, as the local train service is excellent. The small city is in the middle part of France's southern border with Spain in the ancient Languedoc region .

Brooklyn Bridge

The neighboring borough to Manhattan, Brooklyn is now the cool, hip area of New York City, and it's a great destination for singles vacations. Between the art, the food, the culture, and the nightlife, there's a lot of things to see and do in Brooklyn . Plus, if you ever get bored, hop on the subway and head to Manhattan for some sightseeing .

Brooklyn may be crowded, but it's also the kind of place where a single traveler can just blend in. Take a walk through Brooklyn Bridge Park or have some java in a coffee shop, you'll be surprised how introspective you can be even when surrounded by people.

For the best views of the Manhattan skyline, make time for a walk across the Manhattan Bridge. Yes, the Manhattan Bridge, not the Brooklyn Bridge, offers the best views of the city. The walking path is much more narrow, but the skyline views of Midtown and Downtown are spectacular. The path starts at the Flatbush Avenue Extension in downtown Brooklyn and ends at Bowery and Canal Street in Chinatown. The bridge is the origin of the name of one of Brooklyn's coolest neighborhoods, DUMBO, which stands for Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass, which passes over the area.

Waikiki Beach and Diamond Head

Waikiki is the popular resort area on the Hawaiian island of Oahu. It's filled with a wide variety of accommodation options, from budget to luxury. Solo travelers should look at some of the hotel and condo properties a few blocks from the beach for the best value. Most offer ocean views, and many feature suite-sized units with kitchens or kitchenettes.

It's a good trip for singles because the immediate area is just packed with things to do . It's also easy to get to, easy to get around, and has an excellent tourist infrastructure. The area makes it easy for single travelers, as many hotels and resorts offer almost-all and all-inclusive packages, with everything from transportation to activities and meals included.

There are tourist attractions like the Honolulu Zoo and the Waikiki Aquarium , which can be fun places to meet people or to just explore on your own. Kuhio Avenue is filled with cafés, restaurants, and music venues, while Kalakaua Avenue has all the shopping , including malls.

A beautiful blue lagoon in Jamaica

With its many all-inclusive, adults-only resorts , Jamaica is a great destination for single travelers looking to make new friends. For those seeking a large, all-inclusive, adults-only resort with endless activities, dining options, and entertainment, Hedonism II is a great vacation destination.

Known for its unabashed decadence, the 22-acre resort is right at the northern end of the popular Seven Mile Beach in Negril . There are almost 300 rooms in groups of two-story buildings. The resort hosts nightly themed gatherings, as well as an extensive program of activities designed to help guests meet other guests. There are also live shows and musical performances along with a dance club.

The rooms and suites are modern but nothing fancy. Suites get you more space and large terraces overlooking either the jungle or the ocean. There are four different restaurants and two grills serving food 20 hours a day.

Aside from the social scene, the resort sits on a beautiful stretch of private beach, and your stay includes the usual array of complimentary (non-powered) water and beach sports. You can play tennis, volleyball, and basketball, or take a kayak out on the ocean. Certified SCUBA divers can even dive for free. Some of the beach areas and other amenities are clothing-optional.

Hong Kong skyline

This Asian metropolis welcomes solo travelers because so many of its residents are ex-pats. If you go out for the evening in areas like Lan Kwai Fong or Wanchai , you might think you were out in London or NYC. You can also wander through the street markets during the day or evening to do a little shopping. If your budget allows, Hong Kong offers some extreme luxury shopping as well. Pacific Place Mall is a good place to find all the big designer shops and also has a range of excellent dining options.

There are lots of places to visit and meet people, and it's a very safe city to go out alone. Even restaurants cater to single travelers , as Michelin star-ranked places like L'Atelier de Joel Robuchon offer counter seating, perfect for those dining alone.

The area outside Hong Kong, easily reached by ferry, train, or bus is a whole different world-a green world. You'll find fun beach areas and miles of hiking trails and parks to explore, and these outdoor areas are also very safe for solo travelers.

It's also a great destination for single travelers because it's so easy to get to. The city is served by many airlines offering direct service. Once you're there, it's easy to get around. A high-speed train whisks you from the airport to Central or Kowloon in about 30 minutes, and the subway, the MTR system, makes it easy to get around the city.

Sydney Harbour at sunrise

Sydney is an ideal place to visit for singles holidays because there are many direct flights from countries all around the world. For single holidaymakers on a budget, the city does have a good selection of hostels.

The Darling Harbour area is the best place to stay for single travelers. It's a large, newly developed harbor front area starting in Chinatown. There are vast pedestrian and recreation areas filled with things to see, do, and eat , along with a lot of hotels. Vancouver, Canada

Canada's western metropolis provides solo travelers culture, outdoor adventures, entertainment, and food on a world-class level, with the safety and friendliness Canada is known for.

Get yourself a 24-hour pass for the city's Mobi by Shaw Go public bikeshare system and take a ride. Single travelers can take advantage of their CAN$15 a day plan, which gives you unlimited, 30-minute rides during a 24-hour period. It's perfect for exploring many different areas of the city, while limiting the riding time between each to 30 minutes.

Stanley Park is a huge green space that makes up the northwestern half of the downtown Vancouver peninsula. Surrounded by water on three sides, you'll get some great views of the Vancouver skyline and be able to meet other people, as this is where the city comes to exercise. The park includes English Bay Beach , which, in the summertime, is where locals come to lay out and enjoy the sunshine.

When it's time for some food and retail therapy, head downtown to Robson Street . There are hundreds of shops and lots of places to eat, people watch, and just hang out.

Cusco, Peru

The ancient Incan capital city is high in the Andes mountains of Peru and constantly filled with travelers. Mainly known as the jumping-off point (it's where the train line starts) to Machu Picchu, the city itself is a great place to visit for a solo holiday.

Aside from all the solo visitors, Cusco is home to many ex-pats who work in the travel and tourism industry, so it's easy to meet English speakers. For some excellent, inexpensive accommodations, try the San Blas arts district . Food is also very cheap here, as is local travel by bus or taxi if you want to explore the area outside Cusco.

Aside from Cusco, visitors can easily explore Machu Picchu, one of the world's top heritage sites , and Peru's nearby Sacred Valley all via the train line. Be sure to make a stop in Ollantaytambo and climb the incredible ruins here. Wander through the small town with its intact Inca street plan, houses, and drainage system to see what life was like here 600 years ago.

Koutoubia Mosque in Marrakech

If you're seeking a truly exotic, seriously interesting, and endlessly fascinating singles holiday destination, Marrakech, Morocco always delivers. The North African city, a popular destination for many European low-cost airlines, offers something for every sense.

Find a guide and get lost in the ancient souks as you challenge the shopkeepers to get the lowest price on that souvenir. Have a fresh-squeezed orange juice and some lamb tagine for lunch as you explore the ancient walled city, called the medina. As the sun sets, join what seems like the whole city as they gather in the medina's ancient Djemaa el Fnaa square for the nightly human circus. Wander from the snake charmer to the circle of Gnawan musicians to the amateur boxers and then sit down at one of the pop-up restaurants in the center of the square for dinner.

Set on almost 30 acres, the Fellah Hotel is located in a desert oasis at the base of the Atlas Mountains, just outside Marrakech. There are 10 villas and 62 unique rooms of various sizes (including suites and junior suites), each showcasing a modern, Berber style. The hotel has a communal spirit and caters to solo travelers with a lot of available activities. There are cooking classes, language classes, daily group yoga sessions, and things like that.

The Fellah even has its own farm , where you can pick your own eggs, milk a goat, or even groom a donkey. The resort has several pools, including a beautiful sand-bottom, saltwater swimming pool with its own little beach. It's a popular area to meet and hang out with your fellow guests .

View over St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands

This Caribbean resort destination is an "unincorporated and organized territory" of the United States. That means single travelers from the US don't even need a passport to visit. Most visitors head to one of the three main islands: St. John, St. Croix, or St. Thomas, but there are about 50 smaller, mostly uninhabited islands in the archipelago.

Single travelers will appreciate the variety of available accommodations, from furnished condos to resorts, as well as small boutique hotels. It's also a popular destination for solo travelers, as there are so many things to do in the US Virgin Islands .

The islands have a long history, both ancient and colonial. You can see Stone Age petroglyphs in Virgin Islands National Park (on St. John) or trace the islands' sugar trade enslavement history at the Estate Whim Museum and Great House plantation on St. Croix.

There's a lot to do outside: You can explore the islands' many parks on foot, by mountain bike or on horseback. Aside from all the fun you can have on and above the water, the islands are also a world-class dive spot. Each island offers a different dive environment. You can dive coral reefs off St. John, explore wreck sites off St. Thomas, and even try night diving on St. Croix.

Zocalo Plaza in Mexico City

Mexico's capital city is only a three-hour-flight from most of the Southern US. Once here, you will find a vast, cosmopolitan metropolis. CDMX as it's known, is the perfect singles vacation destination because of the endless things to do , see, and eat.

Start your adventures at the core of the ancient and modern city, the Zocalo plaza. Built on top of a large Mayan temple, it's now home to the main Metropolitan Cathedral and is one of the world's great places to people watch. Visit the Templo Mayor Museum, and you can walk through part of that ancient temple as part of the museum is the temple ruins. The Zocalo is part of the Centro Historico, literally the historic center of the city. You'll find wide, pedestrian-only streets lined with shops and restaurants.

The huge city is a city of neighborhoods, and it's fun to spend an afternoon just wandering around one. Polanco, with its tree-lined streets and sidewalk cafés, feels more like Paris. Neighborhoods like Condesa or Roma are young and hip, with trendy restaurants and designer stores. When you're ready to let off some steam and spend a night on the dance floor, head to the legendary Zona Rosa entertainment area.

25 Fantastic Singles Travel Groups You’ll Love

By: Author Amanda OBrien

Posted on Last updated: 04/04/2024

A few years ago there were hardly any single travel groups that offered options for holidays for one – let alone companies who entirely focused on solo departures and looked at things like no single supplements etc and solo travel groups.

Thank goodness for the growth in singles travelling as now there is a good economic reason for companies to look at developing great offers for those looking for holidays for one.

There are now singles travel groups over 30s, single travel for over 50, singles travel getaways, luxury solo travel tours and singles travel getaways galore.

I will let you know which of these tour companies I have traveled with and which I haven’t – if you then go and do a tour on one of the ones I haven’t been on please do let me know what they are like – and I would love you to write a guest post if you’re up for it.

There are so many options for solo traveling today – here are some great trips for single travelers.

1. Group Tours for Solo Travellers

Explore is perhaps one of the best singles travel groups. It is also the company I have been a traveling single with the most so the best place to start! Explore has been running since 1981 so they have loads of experience with running tours.

Explore covers over 100 countries and has a maximum group size of 11 and there is no single supplement if you take a shared room. There is an option to have your own room but that does cost extra. They prioritize working with locals and do a great job finding expert guides.

Around 60% of people who go on Explore trips are traveling on their own and they break down solo vacations into age groups on their website which is really helpful.

My second recommendation for solo travel vacations is G Adventures . They have a wide range of small-group trips designed for the solo traveler. There is no single supplement as long as you are willing to share a room with someone of the same sex. G Adventures also offers single rooms at reasonable prices if that is your preference.

The itineraries for G Adventures trips tend to have more free time than some of the other tour companies in this article. This is great if you are someone that likes to have some time to yourself to relax or explore further but want the support and structure of an organised group trip.

One of the most difficult parts of solo travel can be dinner. Eating on your own can feel lonely and isolating. The tour leader organizes group meals most nights, so if you want company you will almost be able to find it.

If you are traveling alone one of the best ways not to feel like it is to join a group doing some challenge – when I summited Kilimanjaro on an organized solo tour. we were a team from almost the word go. More than half of the trip was traveling solo – some were single, some had partners who didn’t want to go, some like me had someone pull out last minute etc.

It didn’t matter who you had arrived with – what mattered was everyone wanted someone to talk to about whether or not to take Diamox, tips on altitude, share lollies, etc etc.

2. Solo Female Travelers Club

Solo Female Travelers Club is a community of more than 90,000, run by the fantastic travel bloggers Meg and Mar. The heart of the community is their Facebook group, which has some great information and is the perfect way to meet other females interested in traveling solo.

Meg and Mar also run female-only small group tours that range from luxury retreats to adventurous expeditions in some awesome locations.

3. Luxury Single Traveller Vacations

One company I have been particularly keen to try but it just hasn’t worked out on timings and destinations is Flash Pack . I love the tone and feel of their website – it is very much about boutique adventures.

They focus on people in their 30s and 40s and seem to have some great travel groups for solo travelers.

woman poses in front of a temple in bhaktapur nepal

Australian based Travelling Divas also promises boutique hotels and customized trips. I have also been very keen to try Cox and Kings solo holidays .

Cox and Kings have a great reputation as a high-end travel specialist so I am highly confident that the thread count on their sheets will be up to my standards based on how fantastic their hotels look.

These trips though will, of course, be at a premium to some of the other options I have mentioned. But their group travel singles options look terrific.

4. Solo Travel Companies that are specifically for traveling alone

I would highly recommend that you think beyond the country you live in when it comes to solo travel groups. For example, quite a few travel companies based in Australia now run specific holidays for solo travel groups.

Encounter Travels is all about solo travel but not traveling alone as they say.

red sands with a path and shadow of person taking photo in namibia

They also age match so if you are a 35-year-old solo traveler you won’t be in a group of people in their 70s. They do have quite a few trips to various parts of Australia but also a few trips to other places around the world.

Another solo travel company based in Australia is Twos a Crowd . Some UK based companies that specialize in solo travel groups are:

5. Companies that specialise in Adventure

For a more adventurous bent check out    8th-day adventures . They are a London based club that has lots of sporting events and other fun things that are a mix of social and activity.

They also run some group holidays which could be good for the more adventurous solo traveler eg Everest base camp

An interesting-sounding organization is Archaeo Adventures. This female-focused travel company looks at adventures in countries like Morocco and Jordan in small groups. They are about boutique hotels, working with locals, and off-the-beaten-track experiences.

Female-focused hosted adventure trips are also the focus of Living Big which is US-based. Another company specializing in solo travel groups USA is Overseas Adventure Travel , which offers some fantastic-sounding trips for adventurous solo travelers.

Heading to Australia there are Adventurous Women and Another World Adventures.  Another World Adventures curates adventures from different providers. It is a very comprehensive site with loads of options that sound great.

6. Cruises for Solo Travelers

Even cruise ships have gotten on board with the growth in solo travel. Norwegian Cruise Line is the brand most commonly mentioned for having actually built single cabins and apparently there is a dedicated area for solo travelers.

They have several cruise brands – Norwegian Epic, Breakaway, Getaway, and Escape. But ensure you look closely as these can be more family-focused at certain times of the year – check out my top tip 2 below.

Encounter Travel also has loads of information on solo cruise options. They even have a “cabin mates wanted” section where you can potentially find another same-sex solo traveler with whom you can share a cabin.

7. Charity Based Solo Travel Companies

There are a few organisations that run group tours that have some activity/challenge that supports a charity. These can be a great way to find others to travel with and the shared sense of purpose can surely add to the group bond.

Have a look at Global Adventure Challenges and Charity Challenge.

8. Passion-based Solo Travel Tours

An organized trip around an activity you love that is also about solo travel is a fantastic formula to follow. Even if you don’t really bond with anyone on the trip if you have learned more about Italian cooking or photographing sea life it is a well-spent holiday.

Quite a few organizations I have listed above offer planned trips around passions and hobbies. Here are a few others I’ve found:

Frui has some fantastic looking passion-based trips – from photography (a great one for solo travel) to painting to food in some lovely locations. I did a day class with them once in London in photography and they were great.

The Red Sea in Egypt appears to be a very popular solo travel spot – most likely driven by the amount of activity that can be done in the water. There are also numerous diving and/or underwater photography courses in the area.

Skyros is a very famous spot in Greece for activity/passion-based trips. They used to have a bit of a self-help bent but now they are very focused on passions like painting, singing, yoga, and learning.

They have two locations in Greece and one on the Isle of Wight for taster weekends. According to their site, 70% of their travelers are between 40 and 60, and most travel solo. This is a great option if you’re looking for singles travel groups over 40.

9. Something Different for Single Travel Groups

In August 2017, I spent a month living life Unsettled in Medellin Colombia, and loved it. Unsettled is a fantastic concept. Essentially it aims to give people the experience of living in a city for a month rather than being a tourist.

It does this because it has about 25-30 people sign up, organizes apartments and coworking space and sets up activities that you can participate in as much or as little as you like.

The other people on the trip are your community, the hosts act as your connection to local life and having an apartment and workspace means it feels more like living.

They choose brilliant locations from Buenos Aires to Cape Town to Barcelona . I highly recommend checking them out.

If you decide to live life Unsettled then use the code “FRIENDSOFUNSETTLED”  and tell them that the Boutique Adventurer sent you for a discount of USD$150 .

Solo Travel Tips

1. mix up your plans.

A great way to travel solo is to mix things up. If you were heading to say Australia you could go and stay in a spa for a few days (a great way to meet people), head to say Sydney on your own and stay at a boutique hotel and use Tinder or join a meetup group.

You could then join an organized tour with someone like Explore, travel with them for a while, and then have some time solo again. Committing to a lengthy organized tour can be a bit much – plus it is hard to find one that covers everything that you want.

I find a mix is optimal – if you feel lonely it is only a few days till you have company, if you’re dying to be on your own again it’s only a few days till that happens. And you may very well meet others traveling alone on your organized section who are keen to have further adventures after the tour.

I have many friends I have met when traveling solo who become travel buddies and loads of other friends of mine are the same.

2. Avoid School Holidays

September is a great time to travel solo. Be careful of all organized tours/cruises etc during any school holiday time, particularly over the summer, as you may end up surrounded by families.

However, school has returned in September, and there are often many deals for solo travelers.

3. Fill Up your Kindle

There is nothing like a good book to keep you company when traveling solo! I keep adding to my list – please email me with more suggestions! [email protected] .

I keep them all in my Amazon shop. And I have just launched a range of e-books aimed at solo travelers! I have an ebook on Solo Travel, my trip to Colombia with Unsettled and Everest Base Camp .

Frequently Asked Questions about Solo Travel

Are there travel companies just for single people.

Flash Pack group adventures - flashpack.com

Yes! There are several travel companies just for single people as well as companies like G Adventures that offer trips designed for single travelers.

What is the best holiday destination for singles?

korea_daegu_yellow-bicycle

In my opinion, rather than focusing on a particular destination singles should look at holidays with a focus or goal like a cycling trip or a trek. This is most likely to bring together like-minded people and provide a common purpose.

Is solo travel lonely?

woman on train platform with suitcase

It can be. The best way to avoid feeling lonely when traveling solo is to join an organised tour. Or if you are on your own look at staying in high-end hostels for some comfort and the chance to meet others. And a good book can transport you from any difficult situation! And don’t forget to check out things like the safest cities in the US to make sure you can relax during your trip.

How do I meet other female solo travelers?

COMO Shambhala Estate bali - woman in yoga post with support

There are several facebook groups for female solo travelers such as Solo Female Travelers (who also organise group trips for solo female travelers). I have also found that going to a spa/yoga retreat can be a good way to meet other female solo travelers.

Great ideas. I have done a lot of solo tour travel as I like the security of a tour when I am on my own. Some other companies:

Contiki is great for the 18-35s, especially when you haven't travelled much before.

My favourite company is G Adventures, no single supplement, but you can pay for your own room and a huge range of tours world wide. They are Canadian based. All ages, very budget and affordable.

Another one very similar to G Adventures but Australian based is Intrepid tours. World wide, budget, no single supplement but also has own room option if you don't want to share.

I have made life long friends on these tours when I was travelling solo. Now we meet up all over the world and do tours together!

12 best solo trips in the US for 2024

Tarah Chieffi

Editor's Note

Traveling solo is one of life's greatest adventures. Freedom, flexibility, empowerment and reflection are just some of the reasons to plan a solo trip.

Over the last decade, solo travel stereotypes have evolved from gap year students backpacking the Gringo Trail in South America to trips encompassing a wide variety of travel themes, experiences and budgets.

With the rise of the digital nomad, greater connectivity via social media and a growing "what am I waiting for?" mindset that tends to occur during tumultuous times, solo travel looks poised to be one of this year's biggest trends. More than 50% of travelers are looking to plan a solo adventure in 2024, and married women are one of the largest drivers of the market, according to a recent Skift report .

Whether you choose to travel as part of a group tour or independently, it's never been easier (or more affordable) to chart your own course. Many hefty single supplements are now being waived or reduced for both overland journeys and cruises .

For first-time solo travelers , there are plenty of U.S. destinations that combine easy access, relative affordability, welcoming vibes and diverse experiences to help streamline a solo vacation. This enables you to step out of your comfort zone and experience travel in a new way.

With that in mind, here are 12 of our favorite destinations for solo travel in the U.S. for 2024.

San Luis Obispo, California

fun singles trips

Best for: Surfing by day, wine tasting by night

Equidistant from San Francisco and Los Angeles , San Luis Obispo County combines lush scenery, coastal adventures, historic charm and superb wine-tasting within a relatively small and easy-to-navigate area. Often referred to as "Little Santa Barbara," the city is a charming, laid-back stopover for solo travelers embarking on a Pacific Coast Highway road trip.

The unpretentious downtown area is studded with historic landmarks, including the 18th-century San Luis Obispo de Tolosa Mission, now a museum housing artifacts from Native American and Mission-era history. Foodies should time their stay with the bustling farmers market (Thursday from 6 to 9 p.m.), where more than 100 vendors purvey a bounty of farm-fresh produce, flowers and even farm-to-table dinners.

Downtown SLO's welcoming wine bars and tasting rooms are a cozy backdrop for solo travelers looking to make new friends. They provide a fun initiation into coastal California's prized pinot noir and chardonnay varieties.

Just a 10-minute drive from town, family-owned vineyards and tasting rooms dot the lush rolling hills of the Edna Valley. Some 30 miles north, the Paso Robles wine region is often touted as an affordable and more laid-back dupe for Napa.

At Pismo Beach, adventure lovers can surf, boogie board or ride an ATV across the largest swath of coastal dunes in California. This classic California beach town is surrounded by the Pismo Preserve, which provides sanctuary to owls, hawks, peregrine falcons and other wildlife.

Where to stay

If you are looking for a coastal base for exploration, the Vespera Resort on Pismo Beach, an Autograph Collection property, has reasonable room rates for its prime beachfront position. Rooms start at $344 or 65,000 Marriott Bonvoy points per night.

fun singles trips

Best for: History buffs

From its crucial role in the Revolutionary War to longstanding icons like Fenway Park, Quincy Market and its many museums, Boston hosts a wealth of attractions for solo travelers who fancy themselves history buffs.

For a firsthand look at Boston's early days, step onto The Freedom Trail , a walking tour of 16 sites that played integral roles in the birth of our nation. You can continue your exploration in some of Boston's historic neighborhoods, including Beacon Hill and the North End (Boston's Little Italy).

If you plan to spend an evening cheering on the Boston Red Sox, staying at The Verb Hotel (starting at $431 per night) will put you within walking distance of Fenway.

Or, for a points-friendly option, book a room at The Liberty, A Luxury Collection Hotel , where rates start at $275 or 53,000 Marriott Bonvoy points per night. The building once served as the home of Boston's Charles Street Jail, and you can dine among the preserved jail cell facades at the hotel's restaurant, Clink.

Santa Fe, New Mexico

fun singles trips

Best for: Artistic enlightenment

Santa Fe has long been a haven for solo travelers in search of spiritual fulfillment and ethereal natural wonders. Nestled beneath the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, the sacred ruins, shrines, New Age institutes and yoga centers offer healing and enlightenment for those at a crossroads in life.

As one of the world's greatest art centers, the New Mexico capital is celebrated for its rich tricultural heritage (Puebloan, Spanish and Anglo-American), vibrant arts scene and striking adobe architecture.

Art lovers can spend a day perusing the galleries and artisan studios lining Canyon Road. Then, they can head to an open-air concert at the world-famous Santa Fe Opera, which draws opera devotees from all across the globe.

Related: From Santa Fe to Taipei: 12 underrated LGBTQIA+ friendly destinations to visit in 2023

Santa Fe's mystical desert landscapes are immortalized by the late painter Georgia O'Keeffe, the "Mother of American Modernism." The Georgia O'Keeffe Museum, housed in a former Baptist church, holds the world's largest repository of the late artist's works.

The city has also become a mainspring for innovative Southwestern flavors and cuisine, and you can find some of the West's most acclaimed restaurants here.

Marriott loyalists can earn and burn points at the pueblo-inspired La Posada de Santa Fe , a Tribute Portfolio Resort & Spa. From 54,000 points or $332 per night, you can stroll freely over its 6 acres while still being close to downtown's cultural attractions.

For those looking to indulge, the Auberge-affiliated Bishop's Lodge features luxurious rooms with traditional kiva fireplaces. It offers a number of experiences perfect for solo travelers, such as the Healing Art Journey designed to eliminate inner stress. Plus, a resident "chile host" helps gourmands find the perfect pepper and chili oil combination to accompany their meal.

Rates start from $749, but the hotel is currently offering a third-night-free promotion (until April 30), which brings the rate down to $500 plus taxes and fees.

Asheville, North Carolina

fun singles trips

Best for: Hiking, biking and beer

Asheville truly has it all for outdoor enthusiasts. You can hike and mountain bike trails through the hazy vistas of the Blue Ridge Mountains (the city provides a " hike finder " to help you find the perfect trail) and paddle down the French Broad River. Or, simply check out Asheville's outdoor shopping districts, like the River Arts District or Biltmore Park, by foot. (Shopping counts as cardio in my book.)

When it's time for some apres-hike brews and bites, head to one of Asheville's breweries. There are plenty to choose from, but Wicked Weed and Hi-Wire top the list for spots to satisfy your thirst and hunger in a fun setting.

For an upscale boutique stay in downtown Asheville, check into The Foundry Hotel , a Curio Collection by Hilton property that starts at $362 or 76,000 Hilton Honors points per night. Another solid option, the budget-friendly Hotel Indigo Asheville Downtown starts at $135 or 27,000 IHG One Rewards points per night.

New Orleans

fun singles trips

Best for: Live music and livelier crowds

Even if you visit the Big Easy by yourself, you are never truly alone. Whether you're vibing with the throngs of tourists on Bourbon Street, standing in line for beignets at Cafe du Monde or learning about the city's rich history on a group walking tour, you're likely to be surrounded by friendly faces with similar interests (and a taste for powdered-sugar-covered fried dough).

If you've never been to New Orleans , make time to hit up hot spots like Pat O'Briens for a rum-soaked hurricane; Central Grocery, where the famous muffuletta sandwich was invented; and Preservation Jazz Hall for live jazz. If you still have time during your trip, venture farther from the French Quarter to City Park and Mardi Gras World. Or, take a guided tour of New Orleans' hauntingly beautiful mausoleums.

For a hotel that's close but not too close to the French Quarter, stay at The Eliza Jane (starting at $150 or 28,000 IHG One Rewards points per night) or the Kimpton Hotel Fontenot (starting at $150 or 17,000 World of Hyatt points per night) — two of New Orleans' many points-friendly hotels .

fun singles trips

Best for: Music lovers and foodies

The Texas state capital is known for many things — delicious barbecue, a stellar music scene, gorgeous green spaces, lakes where you can stay active and the world's largest urban colony of bats, to name a few. Visiting Austin as a solo traveler is convenient because there are various neighborhoods you can visit to enjoy dining, drinks and entertainment all in one place.

Sixth Street closes down to traffic on weekends and is a great spot for creative cocktails and neon-lit music venues. For something a little more laid back, head to Rainey Street. Also, South Congress, with its unique boutiques and variety of dining options, is a must-visit for both locals and tourists.

Zilker Park puts more than 350 acres of outdoor fun at your fingertips. You can swim in the spring-fed Barton Springs Pool, explore on a rented bike or canoe, or time your visit to annual events like the Austin City Limits Music Festival or the Austin Kite Festival.

Some of the best points hotels in Austin are close to downtown. This includes The Driskill, a World of Hyatt property starting at $369 or 21,000 World of Hyatt points per night, and the Austin Proper Hotel , which starts at $400 or 42,000 Marriott Bonvoy points per night.

Zion National Park, Utah

fun singles trips

Best for: Breathtaking scenery and an accessible gateway town

One of the nation's most popular national parks, Zion makes for an awe-inspiring solo adventure with breathtaking landscapes, epic hiking and bike trails and fascinating wildlife.

In terms of transportation logistics, accessibility and accommodation offerings, planning a trip to Zion National Park is relatively straightforward. The gateway for exploration is charming Springdale, a small town just steps from the park's main entrance that has maintained its quirky vibe despite its soaring popularity.

Amid the winding canyon of sandstone buttresses, sheer red-rock cliffs and slot canyons, you'll find lush evergreen forests, kaleidoscopic wildflowers and mystical hanging gardens. If you are short on time, the Zion Canyon Scenic Drive (accessible only by shuttle bus from March through October) provides a glorious glimpse of the park's red rocks and easy access to several visitor-approved trailheads.

Angels Landing is an iconic hike you won't want to miss. Not for the faint of heart, some 21 hair-raising switchbacks, built into the rift, weave their way to Scout Lookout, which affords jaw-dropping panoramas of Zion Canyon.

Due to increased popularity, hikers need to enter a lottery in order to secure a permit. Depending on your fitness level (and traffic on the trail), it takes between three and five hours to ascend the canyon's east wall.

Just 1 mile from the park's entrance, the SpringHill Suites Springdale Zion National Park is one of the brand's finest iterations. The property offers modern, well-equipped suites that are both large and comfortable; it also offers complimentary breakfast every day and an outdoor pool with phenomenal views of Zion National Park. As a Bonvoy property, you can expect to redeem 40,000 to 60,000 points here; or you can use a 50,000-point Marriott certificate for a lower-rate stay. Cash rates generally start at $275 a night.

Another option is the luxe tents provided at Under Canvas' glamping site in nearby Virgin. The 60 luxe tents and suites come in different sizes and layouts, but all are kitted out with plush king-size beds, en suite bathrooms with hot showers and organic products, and in-tent wood-burning stoves. Rates start from $399 per night.

Portland, Oregon

fun singles trips

Best for: Exploring the unique landscape of the Pacific Northwest

Portland is surrounded by natural beauty on all sides. Though the city lies in a valley, you can often see Mount Hood, Mount St. Helens and the towering green firs and pines surrounding it. To best enjoy these natural wonders, visit Powell Butte for panoramic mountain views or the outlook behind Pittock Mansion for city views with Mount Hood in the background.

You'd be remiss to skip all things weird and wonderful within Portland's city limits. Voracious readers could spend hours in Powell's City of Books, the country's largest independent bookstore. There's also the outdoor Portland Saturday Market , which is considered the largest continually operating arts and crafts market in the country. The city has so many food carts it created a handy guide to help you find exactly what you're hungry for.

Many of Portland's hotels reflect the city's unique style. Choose the Kimpton Hotel Vintage Portland (starting at $170 or 32,000 IHG One Rewards points per night) or The Nines Hotel Portland (starting at $230 or 43,000 Marriott Bonvoy points per night), both downtown.

fun singles trips

Best for: A mix of beach days and California history

San Diego is home to many beautiful beaches, but there's more to do than just spend lazy days in the sand (though I wouldn't blame you if you didn't leave the beach during your visit).

This year, the city is especially primed for discovery, as it has been designated the World Design Capital for 2024, along with Tijuana, Mexico. It's the first time that two neighboring cities in two different countries have shared the distinction. Both cities will celebrate the designation through unique experiences, events and festivals.

Many of San Diego's best-known attractions are in Balboa Park, including the San Diego Zoo, the San Diego Natural History Museum, the San Diego Air & Space Museum, and many splendid gardens and recreational areas.

About 2 miles west of Balboa Park on San Diego Bay is the USS Midway Museum , where you can learn about historic naval aircraft and helicopters on board the USS Midway aircraft carrier. Old Town San Diego — the first European settlement in California — and the Gaslamp Quarter are also worth peeling yourself away from the beach for.

Related: The best hotels in San Diego

If you prefer to stay close to downtown and the bay, reserve a room at the Embassy Suites by Hilton San Diego Bay Downtown , where rates start at $269 or 67,000 Hilton Honors points per night. If you want to be closer to the beach, head to the famed Hotel del Coronado . Expect nightly prices to start at $400 or 95,000 Hilton Honors points.

fun singles trips

Best for: Legendary country music

From the 4,000-seat Grand Ole Opry to the rows of bars with live music along Lower Broadway, you are never too far from legendary country stars and up-and-coming crooners when you visit Nashville.

However, Nashville isn't only a hotbed of honky tonk. It's also where music fans go to immerse themselves in the history of country music. You can pay homage to the greats like Patsy Cline and Johnny Cash at the Country Music Hall of Fame. Or, you can visit RCA Studio B, where stars like Elvis Presley and Dolly Parton recorded country classics.

Nashville is also well known for its shopping scene. Visit The District in downtown Nashville for everything from record albums to cowboy boots. Then, head to the shops in Hillsboro Village or Gulch for local and nationally known fashion and accessory brands.

Related: The best hotels to book in Nashville for the full Music City experience

The Embassy Suites Downtown Nashville (starting at $160 or 47,000 Hilton Honors points per night) offers spacious rooms and a rooftop indoor pool, but for a true Nashville experience you'll never forget, go for the Dolly Parton suite at the Graduate Nashville (starting at $300 per night).

Orcas Island, Washington

fun singles trips

Best for : Idyllic scenery and amazing wildlife watching

A 90-minute drive north of Seattle, the port of Anacortes is the departure point for the Salish Sea's San Juan Islands archipelago (10 miles offshore from the Washington mainland). It's a mesmerizing tapestry of emerald-green islands, glacier-carved mountains and a sparkling sea.

The largest of the chain, Orcas Island appeals to independent travelers with its idyllic scenery, peaceful ambience and warm, communal spirit. The main village, Eastsound, is sprinkled with galleries, intimate restaurants and watering holes. You can savor freshly caught seafood and craft cocktails while trading stories with locals and fellow travelers.

Nature lovers can embark on hikes through the 5,252-acre Moran State Park, laced with over 38 miles of trails and a route for every skill set. The summit of the 2,400-foot-tall Mount Constitution rewards hikers with 360-degree views of Vancouver Island as well as both Mount Rainier and Mount Baker on the mainland.

Related: Pacific Northwest road trip: The San Juan Islands and Olympic National Park

If you prefer to take in the scenery and dazzling wildlife with new friends, join a tour with Outer Island Excursions, which offers memorable whale-watching cruises.

Snug Harbor Resort features 20 modern, well-appointed cottages with kitchens, vaulted ceilings, decks and gas grills overlooking secluded Mitchell Bay. Guests have complimentary use of kayaks, paddleboards, canoes and bikes; boaters can also access the property via a private marina. Rates start from $299 per night.

Sedona, Arizona

fun singles trips

Best for: Reconnecting with nature

There are few places in the U.S. with more spectacular scenery than Sedona. Surrounded by striking red-rock buttes and majestic canyons, this desert destination is an ideal spot for communing with nature.

For some, that could mean a solitary day of hiking at the picturesque Bell Rock. Others may prefer a more spiritual experience like a yoga hiking tour of Sedona .

Sedona's art scene is as vibrant as its landscape. Peruse shops and galleries in the Tlaquepaque Arts and Crafts Village or the Sedona Artist Market. On the first Friday of every month , many galleries stay open into the evening, hosting special artist receptions and other events.

The Hilton Sedona Resort at Bell Rock (starting at $285 or 53,000 Hilton Honors points per night) is about as close as you can get to Sedona's best hiking trails. For a serene retreat experience, stay at L'Auberge de Sedona (starting at $399 per night) or The Wilde Resort & Spa (starting at $450 per night).

Bottom line

When you take a solo trip, you have the freedom and independence to go where you want and do what you want whenever you want.

Whether you are looking for outdoor adventures, foodie heaven or big-city excitement, these destinations are among the best cities in the U.S. for solo travelers.

Blueways and greenways: three big family days out in Ireland

Blueways and greenways: three big family days out in Ireland

Some of our big-day-out destinations.

Caroline Delaney and family enjoy the Lough Derg Blueway

Getting off-road really doesn’t have to mean lepping across muddy fields or hiking up hills — there’s always the ‘original’ highways and byways to consider.

Transporting bulky and heavy goods by water was once the most efficient pre-rail method.

There’s a good commercial reason most of our cities, such as Waterford, Limerick, Dublin, and Cork, are at the mouth of big rivers. So when you factor in minor rivers and canals too then you might see why Killaloe was once the virtual capital of Ireland — 1,000 years ago when Brian Ború was the first High King of Ireland.

A boat trip on Lough Derg is a pretty chill way to check out the scenery and Killaloe River Cruises cuts right up the ‘middle of the road’ between counties Clare and Tipperary so you can see it all at once with a minimum of effort.

Spirit of Killaloe on Lough Derg. Picture: Diarmuid Greene

If it’s breezy you can sit indoors downstairs near the bar but if it’s bright and sunny, or you’re wrapped up for a crisp day then I’d recommend heading up top. The bar offers hot chocolate, a selection of gins or a rather moreish Irish coffee. Owner James Whelan is everywhere on this boat, chatting to passengers and only too delighted to tell people about what sight we’re passing right now or who taught him to make those toasty hot Irish coffees (it was Brendan Grace who once terrified me as Bottler). And he’s rightfully proud of a bonkers-sounding renovation they completed in recent years.

James started out with a small boat bringing groups of four out on the water. Then, following upgrades to 12-seater passenger boat and later a 50-seater, the tours grew in popularity. Instead of getting rid of the quite pretty Spirit of Killaloe they decided to lengthen her. I genuinely did not know you could just seamlessly build a whole seven-meter section into a boat and increase capacity to 80 passengers but that’s exactly what they did... and it looks great.

Back to Brian Ború for a moment — we pass his ringfort, aka Beal Ború — his headquarters were at Ceann Coradh which is about a mile from Killaloe and you can visit this historic site when you’re back on dry land.

My Next Adventure: Caroline Delaney and family on the canal

Greenways are associated with activity and exercise so the next day we decide to get up closer with the water (some of us more than others, but more of that later) and head out kayaking with My Next Adventure. You don’t need to have done much or any kayaking — they’ll supply all the gear and even a guide to accompany you.

Get your bearings on a quiet canal and then head up one side of Lough Derg and pass rather fancy houses and boats along the way. On a kayak you’re lower down on the water than in a boat and this is a great way to see how clear the water actually is — there’s plenty of fish and lilies and water weeds to see if you’re happy taking things easy. If, like two of my teenagers, you’re feeling more energetic, then maybe your guide will helpfully demonstrate how to flick an arc of water onto a sibling or parent with your paddle.

Splashing, 'jousting' and messing on Lough Derg with My Next Adventure

Slack parenting alert: I actually had my back turned and was a few metres away for the next bit. In my defence, one teen has completed a life-saving course and both are strong swimmers. Hearing a sploosh, I looked back to see one entirely innocent teen doing the classic pro footballer hands-in-the-air thing while the other’s kayak was upside down. Not a bother to him: back on the kayak and off we went under the 18th century 13-arch Killaloe Bridge complete with its interesting eel trap and transport system.

The waterlogged teen was dried off by the time we got back past riverboats and swans and ducks but we were still held to our consolation promises of hot chocolate and pizza. Luckily there’s a farmer’s market in Killaloe on Sunday mornings — and there’s a horsebox coffee shop or a pizza restaurant/ bar with outdoor seating for any other day.

We stayed at the very nice Lakeside Hotel and Leisure Centre, in a handy family room. And just in case we hadn’t had enough water there’s a pool with sauna, steam room, jacuzzi, and a spiral slide.

Congratulations to the couple who had a beautifully sunny day for their outdoor wedding overlooking the lake while we were there. Barely any of those revellers were up while we hit the breakfast room the next morning so repeat trips to the pancake machine weren’t too shameful.

Vickie Maye’s family explores Wexford

They lie, belly down on the board, head up, back arched, hands under their shoulders. They crane their heads back, scrutinising the water. The first sight of a wave and they ready themselves. Over and over again they paddle furiously, trying to push themselves into a pop-up position. And time and time again they fall, laughing as they emerge from the foam and the waves.

It’s their first surfing lesson. Expectations are realistically low as we watch from the shore. How much can they possibly grasp in a 90-minute lesson? But my three water babies are determined.

Sure enough, with minutes to go, the 13-year-old follows the wave, and before we know it, she is standing, riding the water to the shore. She is euphoric.

They emerge from the sea, boards under their arms all but striding.

The Maye clan, surfing at Curracloe Beach

The instructor from The Surf Shack shares their elation. She had run a seamless 90-minute lesson. They began with activities to warm up, ice breakers like wheelbarrow and piggy back races. Gradually, the games moved further down the beach, and before they even knew what was happening, they were submerged in the sea.

There wasn’t an opportunity to feel nervous, to feel cold. It was all about fun. This, you think, is how every summer camp should be run.

It is a beautiful day on Curracloe Beach and after our surf lesson we sit and savour 99s at the beach hut. A perfect Irish summer day.

Earlier that morning we visited the nearby Wells House and Gardens. There are two woodland walks to discover, and dotted throughout are intricate wooden carvings and statues. It’s like nothing we’ve seen before. The Mogue walk features towering dragons, doors to Narnia, life-size bears. The kids run ahead through the forest, shouting out, squealing, as they make each new discovery. They form bands at the life-size wooden drum kits, play imaginary guitars and sing into sticks for microphones. They are entranced, engaged. It feels magical.

For younger children there’s the fairy walk — and a life size Gruffalo. We could have spent the day in this fairyland. If you’re in the area, don’t miss it.

Johnstown Castle Estate, Wexford

There were other wonders to explore in country Wexford too. The beautiful grounds of Johnstown Castle, with its unique agricultural museum, brim full of quizzes and trails to keep children engaged.

The National Heritage Park is another treat— a 9,000-year journey that brings Irish history to life, over 35 acres of native woodland, marsh and shoreline. An outdoor museum with a difference, here everything from dolmen to crannogs have been recreated. Visitors can walk through ancient Ireland, starting with the first settlers seeing how they lived. There’s a Viking ship to explore and you can wander into these historic homes, comparing a Stone Age settlement with a Viking house. The guided tours are exceptional, bringing our history to life. At every site there are activities for kids — they can learn to write their names in ogham, even sift for gold.

Hook Head Lighthouse, Wexford

There’s also Hook Head lighthouse to explore, and Wexford’s stunning coastal walks. But truly, you could just spend an afternoon wandering around the town and its endless sea vista with an ice cream.

We stayed centrally in Clayton White’s Hotel. The swimming pool here is top notch and saved us on one rainy afternoon.

Plus, you’re a stone’s throw from any restaurant. We had a perfect Irish gastro pub experience at The Bank. Breaded prawns with chili sauce, steaks, and smiling homely service — it’s what you hope every tourist encounters when they travel to Ireland.

Other highlights are Green Acres — in the heart of the town this three-storey 1800s listed building houses a retail store with a deli, bakery and café as well as an art gallery. We choose the restaurant, where the food proved exceptional, right down to the kids menu.

We leave Wexford, the kids in the back pleading for their very own surfboards to try out on our Cork shores. They want to bring the magic of Wexford, the discoveries of this Irish holiday, home with them.

Deirdre McArdle’s family cycles the Limerick Greenway

We powered into the breakfast at the Longcourt House Hotel, determined to set ourselves up for our 20km cycle in a couple of hours. We’d enjoyed a great night’s sleep here and are feeling fresh and fired up. This family-owned and family-run hotel, in the centre of Newcastle West, was bustling when we arrived the night before. Just in time for dinner we were spoiled for choice, rounding off our meal with a sticky toffee pudding that I’m still thinking about.

The hotel is the ideal spot for anyone taking on the Limerick Greenway (the hotel’s Greenway offer includes complimentary bike hire). There is a Greenway hub in Newcastle West, but we are starting our journey 10 minutes’ drive away in Ardagh. We meet Shane from Like Bikes at the Ardagh station, where he has our bikes all ready to go. The team regularly travels around the different points on the Greenway delivering and collecting bikes, a handy service which means you just need to rock up on the day, all ready to go. Primed with our bikes and suitably helmeted we set off on our cycle.

Deirdre McArdle and family on Limerick Greenway

The Ardagh-Rathkeale stretch of the Limerick Greenway is level and undemanding, perfect for our five-year-old daughter and her little legs. It is great to see how well used the Greenway is: we pass young families out for a cycle just like us, zippy cyclists who quite probably have traversed the entire 40km stretch, women out for a walk with friends, and a few elderly couples taking a leisurely stroll — it feels like an advertisement for the accessibility and the benefits of greenways.

Although the morning had started out grey and drizzly, the sun pokes its way out of the clouds about 10 minutes into our cycle and we are able to take in the countryside stretching out ahead of us. It’s a peaceful path, surrounded, and at times canopied, by trees. Benches and picnic tables dot the trail, offering the opportunity to take time out, and in our case, pick some blackberries and watch our daughter chase butterflies.

Pastoral is the word that comes to mind to describe the views. We are seeing the West Limerick countryside in all its glory — fields that stretch for miles, working farms, and active hedgerows. Signposts along the way help us to keep track of how far we’ve cycled and, crucially, how far we have to go. This is important information for our mini cyclist!

An aerial view of the Limerick Greenway

And soon we have Rathkeale in our sights, a tastefully renovated old railway station complete with an open courtyard area with picnic tables, and the 1709 Café, which is housed in the refurbished station house. We find plenty of choice in the café, which has a selection of baked goodies, sandwiches and “omg so many ice cream flavours!”, according to our weary companion, who perks up considerably when she sees what is on offer. The 1709 Café is the sister café of Bloomers in Rathkeale town, a popular spot run by John Comer.

In the back of the café there’s an unexpected treasure trove for the historians among us, or even those with an interest in local titbits. The Palatine Heritage Centre houses displays and artefacts from the German Palatine settlements in Ireland in the 1700s, and is a labour of love of Austin Bovenizer, himself a descendant of the Palatine settlers. History is all around us on the Limerick Greenway, from the beautiful stone railway buildings to the spot where the Ardagh Chalice was discovered, just minutes from the Ardagh hub. The spot itself though is so unheralded, you could well miss it. Surprising, considering it is widely considered one of Ireland’s greatest national treasures.

Ardagh station on the Greenway

Refuelled after our stop in Rathkeale we turn around and head off, back the way we came. It’s one of life’s weird quirks that the journey home is always shorter, and so it is with our cycle back to Ardagh. The sun is really beating down now, and we need plenty of water breaks, plus a couple of words of encouragement, but finally our finishing point looms into view, and we are back where we started in Ardagh.

As a family of novice cyclists, the Limerick Greenway is a fun opportunity for us to dip our toes into this type of staycation (or day-cation). And with Limerick just an hour and a half drive from Cork, we’ll absolutely be back. Next time, we may even tackle one of the other Greenway sections which feature the Barnagh Tunnel and the architecturally striking Ferguson’s Viaduct. Who knows, maybe we’ll even cycle onwards into Kerry.
