Manchester City's biggest rivals - Games to look out for

Many football teams, if not all, have dedicated fans who have built up rivalry against other teams and their fans. The atmosphere is therefore extra electric at these games, and there is reason to keep an eye out for these encounters.

In Manchester City's case, the primary rival match is against local rivals Manchester United, which always stirs emotions among City fans.

We therefore recommend keeping an extra eye out for games against Manchester United. Other rival games to keep an eye on are Liverpool and Chelsea, but these two teams don't come close to United.

What is travel soccer?

Travel soccer is competitive soccer played against teams from other towns or communities. Manchester Township Soccer Association (MTSA) teams are primarily members of MOSA (Monmouth Ocean Soccer Association), with games played throughout Ocean and Monmouth counties.

How is travel soccer different from recreational soccer?

The purpose of the MTSA Travel Program is to promote and provide a higher level of soccer competition. The Travel Program provides all players the opportunity to play travel soccer at their appropriate skill level.

Travel soccer typically requires a greater commitment of time, provides a higher level of training, and better competition.  Time commitment involves travel to home/away games, two training sessions each week, and team events (team building, fundraising). MTSA travel teams are placed by MOSA into flights (groups of teams at similar skill levels) to achieve a competitive environment for each team each season.

Where do we “travel” to?

Home games are played at our MTSA Complex while practices are held either at the MTSA Complex, MTMS or MTES fields. Away games are played in other towns in Monmouth and Ocean counties; generally not more than an hour away from Manchester Twp.

How much time will my child be expected to devote to soccer?

Travel teams generally train twice per week, with games played on Sundays between 10AM and 5PM. Typically, the Fall season begins in late August and concludes in early November, and the Spring season begins in late March and concludes in mid-June. Teams play 10 games each season, 5 home and 5 away. Most travel teams hold indoor practice/training sessions during the winter. Some opt to participate in Indoor Winter League Soccer Programs.

Training days and times are set by the head coach/trainer based. MTSA recommends that teams participate in at least one tournament per season.

How are teams formed?

Placement to a travel team is by TRYOUT ONLY. Where possible, a travel team will be formed at the appropriate level when a sufficient number of travel-qualified children have tried out for travel soccer. Every spring, MTSA gives the option of open tryouts for all age groups (U8 and up; Boys & Girls) for the addition to or creation of teams for the upcoming season. Club coaches and our training staff conduct player evaluations at tryouts, and teams are formed/added to based on evaluation results. Team roster size and the number of players on the field at any one time varies by age. MTSA requires that a team carry at least two players more than the number of players on the field (i.e., minimum of 9 players on a 7v7 team). The maximum roster size is established by New Jersey Youth Soccer Association.

How are coaches selected?

Head and Assistant coaches are appointed by the MTSA Executive Board each year and are required to be licensed through New Jersey Youth Soccer Association and/or United States Soccer Federation and pass a youth sports volunteer background check. The MTSA Executive Board expects coaches to adhere and enforce the club’s bylaws and rules and regulations, including managing the conduct of players, parents, and assistant coaches.

What if my child plays another sport?

Many of our players balance a schedule that includes other sports, activities, and commitments. It is important that parents be aware that accepting a roster spot represents a commitment to the team and leaves that roster spot unavailable to other interested players. It is expected that players accepting a roster spot will make every effort attend all games and practices during the Fall and Spring seasons.  If that commitment is not an option, our Recreation program offers season only participation, and additional flexibility. Participation in travel soccer requires a commitment to play both the Fall and Spring seasons.

How much does participation in travel soccer cost?

Travel soccer costs come in three forms – registration, uniform, and team costs.

Registration: Yearly fees are paid online via credit card as part of accepting your roster spot following tryouts.

Uniform: Each player is required to purchase a uniform (home/away jerseys, shorts, socks). Uniforms are purchased online direct from the vendor. The club updates the uniform style every 2 years. Uniform orders are placed each year to accommodate growth spurts, new players, lost uniforms, etc.  CLICK HERE to order

Team: Teams are responsible for the cost of professional training, tournament registration fees, and any other team activities (e.g., pizza parties). These costs are generally covered via team fundraising. The type and level of fundraising is dependent upon the activities of the team.

MNSL TRAVEL SOCCER

Fall travel tryouts.

Who: U8 to U14

About MNSL Travel

Mission:  Our mission is simple.  Provide an outlet for competitive soccer in the states largest city at an affordable price.

More to come

Current recreational players interested in stepping their game up to the next level are highly encouraged to try out.  Travel Team coaches are actively searching for potential talent that have the ability to learn needed skills, have at least more of the fundamental skills required, and have the positive attitude needed for playing at the next level.

Travel Teams are for those players that want more than what is offered at the recreational team level.   Travel Teams are competitive, and the players are expected to step up to the challenge.   Player participation and output both at practice sessions and games at 100% are expected at this level by all members of the team.

Players who are interested but not quite sure are encouraged to sign up for training sessions and camps offered throughout the year off-season.   These training sessions (eg.; MNSL Travel Team Indoor Winter Training) are opened up to rec team members based on training slot availability and are an opportunity for players interested in the Travel Teams to “sample” the level of play, coaching, and expectations off-season.

Travel Teams play at various levels in New Hampshire Soccer League play with travel in-state and most games being in the Southern tier of the state. In the 2019 season Travel Teams will also include some tournament play, dependent upon age level.

Travel Team participation allows players to step up their game level without incurring costs that sometimes reach into the thousands of dollars per year. Travel Team play is very competitive price- wise, with a focus on developing players to that “next level.”

Players are expected give 100% at games including at practice! Players are encouraged and expected to practice and further develop their soccer skills as well as overall fitness outside of normal practice sessions several times per week. Conditioning, stamina, and ball control become daily activities for all team players, often as part of other sports they are active in such as track and field.

Coaches regularly provide guidance and recommendations regarding conditioning, overall fitness, solo ball control drills, etc. during practice sessions and in one on one discussions with players as required and based upon their needs. The emphasis is on player-development to the next level and the coaches recognize that this is based on the players current level of knowledge and mastery.

Travel Team players are those players that arrive at practice with their cleats on, shin guards in, ball in one hand and water bottle in the other-running onto the pitch and ready to practice hard!

Based out of Manchester’s Livingston Park facilities, the teams currently practice on pitches at Manchesters Livingston and Rimmon Parks.

Teams play competitive games during both the Fall and Spring Seasons and maintain training over the Winter at indoor facilities procured specifically to ensure team maintenance. Training sessions average 1.5 hours twice a week during the season, 1-hour per week off-season, and can be quite demanding for rec players.  Training frequency can increase/decrease depending on age level, weather conditions, and game tempo/scheduling and team development needs.

Recreational play or “Rec” leagues play is intended to provide players with basic soccer knowledge, develop and maintain interest, and provide a low stress environment to introduce youth to soccer.  Academy level play is designed to provide an outlet for extremely talented players to excel and fine tune skills.  Between Academy level and Rec leagues there is a very wide gap.

This gap, ideally, is filled with a level of play and development that provides an incubator for players that enjoy soccer but want to step their game up to a level that exceeds that of typical recreational level play.

Although London is the obvious destination for many travelers coming to the U.K., its northern cousin of Manchester offers a similar dose of culture, good food, and excitement. Known for its soccer team, Manchester United, the city has been the U.K.'s third-most-popular destination for the past several years. It's easy to navigate thanks to a robust public transportation system (and a primary language of English). It's a great gateway destination to popular tourist spots like the Lake District and Liverpool.

Whether you're coming to experience Manchester or want to include the city as part of a longer itinerary, there are few things to keep in mind as you plan.

Planning Your Trip

Best Time to Visit: The weather is moderate most of the year in Manchester, but the summer and early fall are the best times to enjoy the outdoors. Visit in the late fall to avoid the crowds and take advantage of shorter lines at the popular attractions. Bring an umbrella and a jacket, although it rains far less than you'd assume.

Language: English, although numerous other languages, including Spanish, French, and Arabic, are spoken around the U.K.

Currency: England's official currency is the pound sterling (GBP), which is more commonly called "the pound."

Getting Around: Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) is the city's expansive public transportation system, connecting the city center with various suburbs via bus, tram, and local train. There are also taxis and Uber, as well as places to rent a car or bicycle.

Travel Tip:  Give yourself at least three days to see all of Manchester. The city has various neighborhoods and suburbs that are well worth exploring, and you'll want enough time to try all of the different cuisines and restaurants available in the city. Those interested in museums will have a lot of ground to cover, so do some research in advance and prioritize your itinerary. It's also a good idea to bring along an extra bag or suitcase as Manchester is known for its shopping, both at large department stores and smaller, local boutiques and vintage shops.

Things to Do

Like London, Manchester is a diverse and vibrant city, with lots to see and do, all depending on your preferences and interests. The city is known for its museums, including the National Football Museum and the Imperial War Museum North, and its lively soccer culture. It's also close to many nature destinations, including the Peak District and the Lake District, so many travelers will include Manchester in a longer itinerary. There are also numerous day trips possible from Manchester, many of which can be taken via train or bus.

  • Tour the National Football Museum before heading to a Manchester United match at Old Trafford stadium.
  • Dine at The Old Wellington , a historic pub that dates back to 1552. It has a traditional and rustic menu, with classic options like fish and chips and burgers, and lots of beer.
  • Visit the Pankhurst Centre , which celebrates the Suffragettes' first meeting and is the former home of Emmeline Pankhurst. Entry is free.

For more, explore the top 10 things to do in Manchester.

What to Eat and Drink

London often gets credit as England's best city for food, but Manchester comes in a close second, with many different types of eateries and bars to pick from. The city has an expansive food scene that continues to grow every year, and most global cuisines are represented in its many neighborhoods. Whether you're interested in Indian, Middle Eastern, Japanese, Italian, or some classic British dishes, there's something for every taste.

Manchester also has a thriving pub and bar scene, with many historic pubs and sports bars and smaller, independent cocktail bars. Don't miss grabbing a pint at the corner pub, a quintessential experience while in England, but don't forget to explore areas outside the city center like Stockport, which is known for its innovative restaurants and bars.

The local delicacies are a bit off-center (don't try black pudding unless you learn what it is first), but there are a few treats to seek out, including the Manchester Tart. The traditional English baked tart, which features raspberry jam, can be hard to find, but check the dessert menus at the local British restaurants. Otherwise, be sure to try a Sunday roast, a traditional lunch that features roast meat, vegetables, and a Yorkshire pudding.

Where to Stay

Most travelers will opt to book a hotel or an Airbnb in the city center of Manchester, which itself is fairly vast. Look for places to stay in the Northern Quarter, a hip area with plenty of dining and shopping options, as well as the Central Retail District and NOMA. Staying in the center makes it easy to walk to many museums, but look closer to Manchester Piccadilly station if you're on a budget. Some favorite downtown hotels include The Cow Hollow Hotel, The Midland, and the Stock Exchange Hotel.

Those who want to be closer to Old Trafford stadium should look for accommodations near the Quays, which is a bit farther out (although usually cheaper) than what's available downtown. Salford, located west of the city center, is another good option for cheaper hotels or Airbnbs, although it's a drive or bus ride away from many attractions.

Getting There

Travelers can arrive in Manchester via Manchester Airport, an international hub that mainly serves Europe and the Middle East, or via London . Those flying into London can take a two-hour train journey north from Euston Station to Manchester Piccadilly. Trains run frequently, and it's easy to access Euston from Heathrow Airport via taxi or Uber. There are also National Express buses that connect London and Manchester, although those may be slower and less frequent than the train. More adventurous travelers may want to rent a car and drive to Manchester from one of the U.K.'s airports. Be sure to opt for a GPS in your rental car to help navigate the roads and highways around England.

Culture and Customs

Manchester has a similar culture to London, although the North of England can feel slightly different than the South. There are also a few differences between U.K. and U.S. culture, particularly when it comes to tipping. Restaurants and bars will include a service charge (usually 12.5 percent) on the bill, so there's no need to leave extra cash, although you can drop a few extra pounds if the service was particularly great. When grabbing a drink at a pub, leave a pound or two tip for each round you buy.

Be mindful that British culture is fairly reserved, especially compared with how we behave in public in America. When using public transportation or visiting museums, keep your voice low and be polite. Brits also appreciate a good queue, so never skip the line or push your way to the front, even if you're at a rowdy soccer match.

Money Saving Tips

  • Manchester has a free bus system that operates around the city center . There are three routes, 1, 2, and 3, which run throughout the main areas, including the Northern Quarter, NOMA, and Chinatown. Two of the buses run daily, including holidays, while one is not available on Sundays. Check the timetables and routes online to plan a journey.
  • Several of Manchester's museums are free to enter , including Manchester Museum, Manchester Art Gallery, and the Manchester Airport Runway Visitor Park.
  • Take advantage of nearby walks and parks, including Heaton Park and Arley Hall and Gardens. Bring along a picnic during the warmer months to save some money on lunch.
  • Grab a bite to eat at one of Manchester's hip food halls, which have casual, inexpensive breakfast, lunch, and dinner offerings. Mackie Mayor is one of the city's most popular.
  • Save money on public transportation by walking as much as possible. Central Manchester is very walkable, especially when visiting attractions like museums and theaters, and it's a good way to keep your budget low. For those who need to take public transportation, consider one of the tram and bus passes that are good for multiple journeys.
