MOD SUN (born March 10, 1987) is the stage name of alternative hip-hop rapper and musician Dylan Smith, who has released a string of EPs and mixtapes since his debut in 2009 – hailing from Bloomington, Minnesota, U.S.

Born Derek Smith in Bloomington, Minnesota, Smith changed his first name to Dylan after turning 18, and adopted the moniker MOD SUN shortly afterwards. The performer’s earliest musical excursion came playing drums in the post-hardcore band Four Letters Lie, where he remained until 2009. That year he joined the band Scary Kids Scaring Kids as the drummer, where he was given the creative freedom to pursue his own interests and debuted MOD SUN as a opening act. It was therefore natural for Smith to continue to performing as MOD SUN following Scary Kids Scaring Kids’ disbandment in 2010.

The rapper’s debut release was the mixtape “I’ll Buy Myself” in 2009, followed by the subsequent mixtapes “Let Ya Teeth Show” and “How to Make A MOD SUN”. The following year, significantly raising MOD SUN’s profile, the rapper issued the EP “The Hippy Hop” and the single “Need That”. 2011 proved a busy year for the rising star with the release of the EP “In MOD We Trust”, the mixtapes “Health, Wealth, Success, & Happiness” and “Blazed By The Bell”, as well as the single “Paradisity”. In collaboration with The Ready Set, MOD SUN issued the single “All Night, Every Night” in 2012, which was succeeded by the EP “Hippy As Fuck” later that year. After another busy year in 2013, MOD SUN signed with Rostrum Records in 2014 who issued the hippy-hop rapper’s debut full-length album “Look Up” in March 2015.

I saw mod on warped tour last year, he was one of the very first acts, most people don't go to those. Mod didn't care, when he came out he had so much energy and was having the time of his life on stage, which drew a larger crowd. He definitely has great presence and is a blessing to watch honestly. I was lucky to meet him after the show, waiting in line for 45 minutes, but when i met him, he was still extremely happy, not having lost an energy even though going through a line of people. i asked him to sign my shoe because that's where i have all my signatures, and he said that it was awesome he got to be the first signature of that warped tour for me. I then asked him how his day was and he replied "this is the best day of my life." his energy and love on that day will stay with me forever i think.

Last night's show was absolutely incredible. MOD SUN killed it, call me karizma was amazing, Adam Vegas and forget Brenden smoked a cigarette with the fans, and everyone there was super cool, after the show most of the performers were happy to meet their fans so I met all 5 performers.

The venue was kinda small but super punk rock, but the audience mostly all stayed super involved with the show.

Security was pretty light, no Pat down, no emptying my pockets, nothing.

This was cool for me because I brought a doobie that I passed to mod himself on stage.(the best moment of the night and maybe even my life) However this did cause at least 2 people to look like absolute xan-bies. And Xanax is fucking lame.

All things considered this concert was amazing! I hope Mod comes back to SLC!

Really enjoyed watching him perform last night at The Ritz in Raleigh,NC! He got the crowed pumped up & ready for MGK! Wish he would have performed more than 3 songs tho! either way he was a blast and I love his fun free spirit, good vibes, and smiles! Loved his & MGK's Halloween costumes (Cheech & Chong)!! Definently was a great time and an epic Halloween!

fucking amazing. I don't really know how to put something like that into words. I was just a few feet away from the stage so the energy was crazy and fun. I will definitely have to go to another show.

it was such an amazing show!! the venue was efficient and everyone was kind. great crowd and great vibes. i loved the energy of the entire line up. will 100% go again :)

With a career spanning over a decade, prolific singer and songwriter  MOD SUN  has worked with some of the biggest names in music including  Machine Gun Kelly ,  Travis Barker ,  blackbear ,  Avril Lavigne ,  Gashi ,  Nipsey Hussle ,  Steve Aoki,   Rich The Kid  and  Schoolboy Q .  MOD SUN , which stands for “movement on dreams, stand under none,” started out as a drummer for two popular punk rock bands, Scary Kids Scaring Kids and Four Letter Lie. After several years of national and overseas touring, he decided to step out from behind the drums to pursue a solo career. With the release of 5 albums, 3 EPs, 6 mixtapes, and more than 100 songs,  MOD  has amassed global recognition and widespread industry respect including GQ Italia calling him “one of the most revolutionary and original artists in the American record scene.” In 2021, he released his 4 th  studio album  Internet Killed The Rockstar  to critical acclaim. MOD SUN and lovelytheband announce co-headlining tour to stop in Stroudsburg

Jun. 12—STROUDSBURG — Award-winning singer/songwriter, MOD SUN and lovelytheband announce the co-headlining Here's Your Flowers' Tour that will stop at the Sherman Theater on Friday, October 25.

The two hit acts team up for their U.S tour kicking off September 28 in San Francisco and concluding November 11, 2024.

Artist and promoter presale begins Wednesday, June 12 at 10:00 a.m. local time and Spotify and local presale begins Thursday, June 13, 10:00 a.m. local time.

Public on-sale starts Friday, June 14 at 10:00 a.m. local time. For tickets and more information, visit shermantheater.com .

On Friday, June 7, MOD SUN released debut single, "Sunshine" off his forthcoming album expected out later in 2024. The track is an interpolation of the beloved 1940 song, "You Are My Sunshine", and is co-written by best friend and frequent collaborator, Machine Gun Kelly and co-written and produced by No Love For The Middle Child.

The brand new music video is a one-take concept directed by MOD and features cameos from Huddy, Siiickbrain, Sava Schultz and Natalia Barulich.

lovelytheband just dropped "feel like summer" through the band's own label, Happy Accident, on June 4. Their successful full-length album, "if we're being honest", dropped last year and they've been dropping hot singles left and right ever since.

lovelytheband achieved massive success with their debut single "broken" in 2018, spending nine weeks at number one on Billboard's Alternative Songs chart. The triple-platinum-selling track remained on the chart for seventy-six weeks, the longest-running entry at the time.

lovelytheband was named one of Billboard's "Greatest Alternative Acts of All Time" and their debut single "broken" was named the second "Greatest Alternative Song of All Time". They won the 2019 iHeartRadio Music Award for "Best New Alt/Rock Artist".

MOD SUN and lovelytheband head to Stroudsburg's historic arts & entertainment venue, Sherman Theater, on Friday, October 25. Doors open at 6:00 p.m. and the show begins at 7:00 p.m.

Mod Sun Says He'll 'Listen' to His Heart 'Even When It Feels Broken' After Avril Lavigne Split

Earlier this month, sources told PEOPLE that Mod Sun and Avril Lavigne called off their engagement after two years together

Mod Sun is focusing on the future after calling off his engagement to Avril Lavigne .

The musician, 35, reflected on his tumultuous week — which saw him and Lavigne end their relationship 10 months after getting engaged — in an Instagram post that said he was working on healing his heartbreak.

"In 1 week my entire life completely changed…I just know there's a plan for it all," he wrote. "I'll keep my head up + always listen to my heart, even when it feels broken 💔"

Mod, who is currently on tour, said that performing each night for fans has helped him stay positive.

"Being surrounded by love every night on tour has been an absolute blessing," he wrote. "I have the best friends in the entire world, thanks for always having my back. See you on stage."

The pop-punk rocker (whose real name is Derek Smith) shared a series of performance photos and videos alongside his message, starting with a stoic-faced mirror selfie.

A source told PEOPLE last week that he and Lavigne, 38, "have been on and off for the past two months, but are no longer together as a couple."

A rep for Mod Sun told PEOPLE in a statement that the musician was blindsided by the end of their relationship: "They were together and engaged as of three days ago when Mod left for tour so if anything has changed that's news to him. Mod will be performing tonight in Portland at The Hawthorne Theater."

Last week, TMZ published photos of Lavigne hugging rapper Tyga after sharing a meal at Nobu. Though the images sparked dating rumors, a source told PEOPLE that the two are "genuinely friends and nothing more," and that "there was no third party involved in the split."

Mod Sun and Lavigne met in January 2021 and released the collaborative single "Flames" the same month. They were first romantically linked the following month and got engaged in Paris in April 2022.
