Tour description

Spend one perfect day exploring venice’s charming islands and enjoying vip treatment..

This Murano & Burano tour takes you away from the crowds of central Venice to the city's outlying islands, bursting with authentic history and culture. Explore Burano and Murano by private boat, complete with an exclusive wine tasting at a Michelin Star restaurant and a private glassblowing demonstration.

Say buongiorno to your guide and small group in central Venice, then enjoy a short walk through a picturesque neighborhood to your boat to begin your Murano & Burano tour. You’ll make a brief stop along the way for a photo op at one of Venice’s most recognizable spots.

Once aboard the private boat, you’ll slip away from the city center and catch breathtaking views from the water. Pass by legendary sights such as St. Mark’s Square, the Doge's Palace, and the Bridge of Sighs. Throughout the pleasant hour-long ride, your guide will also point out some lesser-known gems that you’ll want to explore during the rest of your time in the city.

Explore picture-perfect Burano with a knowledgeable guide.

You’ll disembark at Burano and pop over to a secret vineyard—now part of a Michelin Star restaurant. Relax and enjoy the views of the vineyards from the restaurant’s stunning tasting room as you sip a glass of excellent white wine served with homemade snacks in an exclusive tasting that’s not available with any other operator.

After your VIP wine tasting, you'll discover the center of Burano Island, home to the famous colorful houses which have been the homes of Venice’s legendary lacemakers since the 16th century. Enjoy a stroll around the island with your guide, taking in the charming streets and sights like the old fish market (no longer in use) and the main church. After the guided portion of your visit, you’ll have the option to accompany your guide to a traditional lacemaking workshop or enjoy some free time on your own.

See Murano’s glassmaking tradition come to life.

Your next stop is the island of Murano, known for its respected tradition of glassmaking since the 13th century. After a 40-minute boat ride, you'll disembark on Murano and head into a formerly abandoned medieval church. Visited by Casanova and Venetian nobles in its heyday, this fascinating space is now a glassmaking workshop. Marvel at a private glassblowing demonstration and learn about the storied history of this local tradition.

After your Murano tour, you'll have some free time to explore the island. Finally, hop back aboard your private boat and we’ll have you back in central Venice by late afternoon. Alternatively, you can choose to stay in Murano for a bit longer on your own, with instructions from your guide on how to make your way back to Venice via public transport.

You’ll return to Venice with a new perspective on the Floating City and some of its lesser-visited (yet no less charming) islands. Thanks to the stories from your guide that bring the islands and their traditions to life, your Murano & Burano tour will provide you with a greater appreciation for the rich cultural heritage of the lagoon.

Please note that this description is an example and your experience may vary depending on the season, day of the week, and group size. Regardless of where your tour goes, you always have an excellent experience.

This was a GREAT tour - we had a private boat to take us first to Vanessa winery on Burano and then explored Burano. Manuela brought us to see a lace demonstration as well. We then got back on the boat and went to Murano to see a glass blowing demonstration. Manuela was so friendly and knowledgeable. The group size was also perfect. Can't wait to book another tour with these companies!

The Best Murano and Burano Tours to Take in 2024 and Why

Ian Sumpter Last Updated: October 27, 2023

No trip to Venice is complete without a trip to the islands of Murano and Burano, with their famous glass and lace-producing factories. One of the best ways to experience these two islands is on a guided tour. In this article, I’ll cover the best Murano and Burano tours to take this year and why.

Pro Tip: Planning what to do on your trip to Venice? Bookmark this post in your browser so you can easily find it when you’re in the city. See our  guide to Venice  for more planning resources, our  best Venice tours  for a memorable trip, and the top things to do in Venice .

Should You Take a Tour of Murano and Burano?

murano e burano tour

Short answer: yes!

The best tours of Murano and Burano focus on the trades that have flourished on the islands for centuries. In 1291, all glass production was moved from the main islands to Murano to prevent fires and ensure the glass-making skills remained a secret known only to the Venetians. Today, you can watch Murano glassblowers using the exact same techniques that they having been using for centuries for the world-famous venetian glass.

Burano is almost like a toy model village, its tiny houses painted bright colors. Fishermen mainly inhabit the island, but lace production has been centered here since the 15th century. Today, almost every store on the island sells lace, and the ladies who produce it are still often seen practicing their art on the street.

You can, of course, visit both of these islands on your own. It will be enjoyable, you will learn a little, buy some pleasant souvenirs, and be on your merry way. But the best tours offer experiences you would only be able to do with the help of an expert guide. You can learn the history in the book, but a licensed expert guide can elevate any visit to help you get under the skin of the trades, traditions, and legends of these areas.

Venice Travel Guides Last Updated · Aug 5th, 2024 · Maddy [post_comments before=""] -->

burano veneto

Are you thinking of doing a Murano and Burano tour from Venice?

There are many Murano and Burano tours and half-day excursions you can join to be able to explore these splendid Venetian islands. Boats normally depart from various locations such as Piazzale Roma and Riva degli Schiavoni, near San Marco.

Discovering Murano and its glassworks, Burano and its colours in less than 5 hours is possible! But why even join a Murano and Burano boat tour? Because half day tours to the islands are perfect for those who don’t have much time available.

For most visitors to Venice, these tours are highly convenient because boats leave from popular locations near St. Mark’s Square or Piazzale Roma and by booking online in advance you don’t have to queue at the tourist offices in Venice.

What's in this guide?

I want to start off by saying that in my opinion, a visit to Venice can’t be considered as fully complete without visiting the islands of Murano and Burano .

There are many things to do in Venice , but to start off this guide, and before we look at the these island tours, let’s look at where both Murano and Burano are located. Also, some of the reasons why you would choose to visit them in the first place.

Where are Murano and Burano?

Murano and Burano are islands that belong to the Venetian lagoon , and located between Venice (to the north) and the mainland , in northern Italy.

Murano is based on many small islands divided by canals, like Venice. It’s famous for its glass making factories which attract visitors from all over the world.

Burano is further away from Venice and it’s a fishermen’s village known for its rainbow coloured houses and its lace work , which is a tradition that locals have kept alive and handed down through many generations.

It’s worth noting that Burano is connected to the Mazzorbo island by a bridge. This is one of the least visited islands of the Venetian lagoon but still worth visiting.

💡 Local Tip: I recommend visiting Mazzorbo to eat at the restaurant Venissa , the green Michelin starred restaurant whose mission is to enhance and celebrate the flavours of native Venice.

Are Murano and Burano worth visiting?

Yes, Murano and Burano are both worth visiting. See below a few reasons why.

  • Murano is worth visiting to closely watch glassmaking masters . Since the 13th century, Murano has been the hub of the Venetian glass industry , whose techniques have been handed down from generation to generation. The tours include a demonstration by master glassmakers of Murano glass making and the creation of beautiful objects .
  • Burano is one of the most picturesque villages in the lagoon and Veneto region with its lively and colourful houses . According to the legend, local fishermen wanted their houses coloured to recognize them on the way back from the sea on days of thick fog.
  • Another reason to visit Burano is to watch handcrafted lace created by local lacemakers on the streets. It’s quite rare to find Burano lace due to the industriousness of the technique, called the bobbin lace. This ancient technique allows the creation of lace of sublime grace and with truly complex designs.

How far are Murano and Burano from Venice?

Murano and Burano are both north of Venice and Murano is 1.5 kilometres from Venice, while Burano is 7 kilometres away. The only way to reach them is by vaporetto (water bus).

vaporetto sign venice

The main lines depart from the Fondamenta Nove water bus stop, which is 10 minutes away from the Rialto Bridge, and 16 from St. Mark’s Square on foot.

The best way to move between the islands is to get a daily water bus ticket online.

  • To Murano: get the water bus lines 3 from the railway station, 4.1, 4.2 from both the train station and Fondamenta Nove, 12, 13 and N from Fondamenta Nove only. There’s also the seasonal line number 7 from San Marco Zaccaria to Murano main stops. It’s advised to get off at the Murano Navagero terminal to visit the island and to do that use the line Fondamenta Nuove-Murano Navagero 4.1 that takes 17 minutes . You can see this guide on how to get from Venice to Murano for more detailed advice.
  • To Burano: get the water bus lines 12 and N . The best terminal to get off is the Burano C vaporetto terminal. The best line to get is 12, Fondamenta Nuove-Burano C and it takes 45 minutes . You can get from Murano to Burano with the line 12 Murano Faro-Burano C in 30 minutes.

Best time to visit Murano and Burano

The best time to go on a Murano and Burano tour is from late spring to early autumn . Visiting these islands on the shoulder seasons is advised, if you want to avoid long queues at the vaporetto stops and to visit the main attractions.

burano from venice

I’ve spoken about visiting Venice in May before, but in this case I would recommend avoiding the weekends , when many people go on excursions and day trips to these islands. Spring and autumn are therefore ideal to avoid large crowds, and enjoy pleasant temperatures (can go over 20 °C on a warm sunny day).

Of course, there’s a higher chance of rain compared to the summer, but keep an eye on the forecast and plan your stay in Venice around that, when possible.

The best time of the day to visit them is early in the morning and normally, half a day is enough to cover the main sights of Murano and Burano. If you’ve decided to travel there by water bus then you can spend as much time as you want.

Will you be visiting these Venetian islands from May to September? Remember to carry with you a pair of sunglasses and a good sunscreen to protect your skin.

Venice, founded in the 5th century AD by refugees fleeing barbarian invasions, evolved into a dominant maritime republic controlling trade routes. Flourishing culturally and economically through the Middle Ages and Renaissance, it nurtured renowned artists and a distinctive political structure. Despite facing adversities and succumbing to the fall of its republic in 1797, Venice retained its essence. Today, it captivates with its picturesque canals, majestic palaces, and vibrant cultural festivities, enduring as a timeless emblem of resilience and beauty.

The inside story

A memorable trip in the romantic city of Venice is not complete without a visit to the islands of Murano and Burano , which are part of the municipality's most famous Italian lagoon. You will need only a half day for this excursion, but our advice is to dedicate an entire day to fully enjoy the charm of these islands.

The name of Murano echoes around the world thanks to the art of its master glassmakers. The glass came to Venice around the year 1000 and, thanks to commercial relations with the East, the techniques of glassmaking reached the highest level. However, around the year 1100, due to pollution and the danger of fires, furnaces were banned from Venice and moved to the nearby island of Murano. Here families handed down the secrets of glass art from generation to generation. Nobody in the world has managed to equal them and still today the Murano Glass brand is a guarantee of excellence and creativity. On the island you can visit the kilns and the Glass Museum and see artisans at work, as well as buy nice souvenirs to take home in memory of your trip.

Another beautiful island in the Venetian Lagoon is Burano , one of the ten most colorful places in the world! An authentic feast for eyes and soul, this town enchants with the colourful facades of its houses, which are reflected in the water of the lagoon. Why does the island look so peculiar? A legend says that, during the winter season, Burano is shrouded in mist, so the fishermen decided to paint their houses with bright colours to recognize them more easily returning from the sea. Even today you can paint your own home: you just have to apply for a permit. The tradition of Burano is not only colour, but also lace made entirely by hand. This production of excellence began in the fifteenth century. Do not miss the Museum of Lace!

The spectacular island of Burano became famous for handcrafted lace making in the 16th century. Although lacemaking on the island declined in the 18th century, it was revived in the 19th century when a school of lacemaking opened. Today, craftswomen sit at the doors of their colorful houses and weave the most impressive lace. Enjoy strolling through the picturesque streets as you admire the colorful houses or stop at one of the islands famous restaurants, specializing in fresh seafood. The island is also home to the Lace Museum and many shops selling beautiful lace but make sure to check the authenticity if you decide to buy. Real Burano lace takes a long time to make and even the smallest piece can take weeks to finish so it's usually much more expensive.

Tour Description

Murano: the centre of the glassmaking industry for 700 years.

We’ll begin our journey on beautiful Murano , actually a series of 7 islands linked by bridges perched in the heart of the Venetian lagoon. In the 13 th century the glassmakers of Venice were moved en-masse to this remote spot to guard against devastating fires caused by their furnaces belching out smoke into the densely populated city, and 800 years later Murano glass is still one of the world’s most famous artisan products.

During our stop on the island we’ll learn all about the special glass-blowing technique brought to Venice from the Orient by returning traders and perfected over the centuries in the island’s charming glass museum, before seeing the works of the modern-day artisans keeping the traditions alive in their nearby ateliers today. If you wish, we'll also be able to arrange a glass-blowing demonstration  where you'll get to see the incredible technique that magically turns molten sand into crystal up close. Murano is also home to the oldest church in the Venetian lagoon, which we can visit on request - lavish Santa Maria e San Donato , whose 12th-century mosaic floor is a masterpiece of Byzantine art.

The Spectacular Painted Houses of Burano

Back on the water, we’ll chart a northward course towards the seductive island of Burano at the northern end of the lagoon. The incredibly picturesque brightly painted houses that line Burano’s narrow cobbled streets and waterways are a photographer’s dream, and the settlement even boasts its own leaning tower in the campanile of San Martino . According to popular folklore, the tradition of Burano’s brightly coloured houses can be traced back to the island’s fishermen seeking a foolproof way to find their ways home through the dense fogs of the Venetian winter. Burano is known throughout Italy for its tradition of lace-making, the island’s main industry as far back as the Renaissance, when Leonardo da Vinci dropped by to purchase some for an altarpiece destined for Milan cathedral. Not much has changed since Leonardo’s day – these intricate masterpieces are still made entirely by hand, craft elevated to the realm of high art.

Torcello: A Journey to the Cradle of Venetian Civilization

The final stop on our journey into the heart of the Venetian lagoon is also a journey back in time. The semi-deserted island of Torcello is the birthplace of Venetian civilization, where according to legend refugees fleeing Attila the Hun’s Barbarian hordes on the mainland arrived in the 7 th century, and was for centuries much more powerful than its younger neighbour across the lagoon.

The stagnant air of the lagoon and the increasing difficulty of navigating its waterways led to its slow and inevitable decline over the centuries, and these days it’s a sleepy place with just 13 full-time residents. But its extraordinary Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta , complete with spectacular Byzantine mosaics including a truly terrifying Last Judgement , is   a vivid reminder of the island’s former glory . An air of mystery hangs over this forgotten place, and on your visit you’ll also learn about the legends surrounding eerie historical sights like the Devil’s Bridge and Attila’s Chair .

if you would like to extend your time on the water and experience the rich culinary traditions of the lagoon with a gourmet lunch, contact us to ask us about our exclusive VIP Luxury Islands Excursion.

Beatrice Cantilena was our guide in Venice and the surrounding islands. The tour she arranged for Murano , Burano and Torcello was outstanding. Beatrice had arranged demonstrations of glass making in Murano as well as lace work in Burano. Amazing! Beatrice is so knowledgeable and tells you all these amazing things. She has such a warm and comfortable personality that we found to be so charming. (These traits were apparent in every guide we experienced with Through Eternity.) Beatrice also made sure that every water taxi or transport was where needed and when we needed it. We highly recommend Beatrice and especially Through Eternity tours. You will never regret choosing Through Eternity. Sincerely, Alan Gordon

Burano and Murano Day Trip Itinerary

A Visit to Burano – Stop #1

Time Needed in Burano: 1-2 Hours How to Get There: From Venice’s Fondamenta Nova ferry terminal (F.te Nova) take the vaporetto line 12 to Burano. This line also makes stops at Murano.

First up on this day trip itinerary is a visit to the island of Burano. Burano is known for its beautiful pastel houses and for its lace-making.

The canal of Burano

History of Burano

The island of Burano can trace its history back to the Roman times, when the island was first believed to be settled.

However Burano became famous in the 1500s for its intricate lace making. Lace became a status symbol for the wealthy in the Venetian Republic and this soon spread throughout Europe.

Burano was the heart of needle lace making and to this day Burano is known for its delicate and beautiful lace.

The canal of Burano, with small boats and a bridge in the background. Surrounding the canal is an array of colorful houses.

Why is Burano so Colorful?

The pastel colored houses in Burano are a vast difference from other homes found along the islands of the Venetian Lagoon.

The story as to why the locals painted their houses various bright colors is so that the fisherman of Burano could find their way home when the dense fog would cover the island.

Things to Do in Burano

☑️ admire burano’s colorful houses.

By far the best thing to do in Burano is wander the charming streets and admire the brightly colored houses. Burano is worth visiting for anyone interested in photography, and the island is one of the most Instagrammable places in the larger area of Venice.

Make sure to check out Casa Bepi (Bepi’s house) as this is the most colorful house in all of Burano!

☑️ Visit the Lace Museum

The Lace Museum is located in the historic palace of Podestà of Torcello on Burano. This palace was once the seat of the famous Lace School in Burano.

Today, you can visit the Lace Museum to see an array of beautiful lace pieces, costumes, and vintage items.

The Lace Museum is open Tuesday through Sunday, from 10am until 4pm (last entry 3:30pm).

☑️ See the Leaning Bell Tower of Burano

The Leaning Tower of Pisa isn’t the only leaning tower in Italy! Burano has its own leaning tower, the Bell Tower that is on the back of the Church of St. Martin Bishop.

The best view of the Leaning Tower of Burano can be found on Terranova’s marble bridge or Giudecca Street.

☑️ Try Some Gelato

You can’t visit Burano without a Gelato stop! There is a great little Gelato spot located near the Vaporetto Station. Its the perfect treat before heading over to Murano.

A Visit to Murano – Stop #2

After Burano, head to Murano which is known for creating the beautiful Murano Glass.

History of Murano

The first records of glass making in Venice dates back to 982 AD, with the first mention of a Glass Maestro (Glass Master). However, glass making in the Venetian Lagoon is believed to have taken place for several years prior to this.

Murano became the home of Venetian glass making in the year 1291, when several large furnaces and glass workshops were moved to the island from the center of Venice.

For the next several hundred years, Murano held a monopoly on the glass-production in Europe.

Authentic Murano Glass made during a glass blowing demonstration

Today, authentic Murano Glass is a luxury product, known for its handmade craftmanship, intricate details, and vibrant colors.

Things to Do in Murano

☑️ watch a glass blowing demonstration.

Watching a Murano glass blowing demonstration is a must-do while visiting the island. You’ll have the opportunity to watch trained glass masters show their craft and create a beautiful piece of glass.

If you take a guided tour to Murano and Burano then this experience is included. However, if you go on your own then you can Book the Glass Blowing Demonstration Here .

☑️ Shop for Murano Glass at the Glass Factory

If you want a unique souvenir from Italy, a piece of Murano glass is worth getting. These pieces are handmade and full of beautiful details.

While some Murano Glass can be expensive, the Murano Glass Factory offers a number of small affordable pieces for less than €25 .

Important Tip: If you by Murano Glass, make sure to buy it in Murano and not just at any shop in Venice. Murano Glass from Murano is 100% authentic, where as unfortunately some of the new “souvenir shops” in Venice sell cheap replicas.

☑️ Visit the Glass Museum

If you have extra time, you may choose to visit the Glass Museum. The small museum dives deeper into the history of glass making in Murano and the importance it had throughout the Venetian Empire.

The Glass Museum in Murano is typically open daily from 10am to 6pm.

☑️ Visit the Church of Santa Maria e San Donato

The beautiful Church of Santa Maria e San Donato in Murano is worth visiting while on the island. It is most famous for its 12th-century apse mosaic depicting the Madonna.

Not only does the church feature stunning architecture, but legend has it that there are dragon bones buried inside after a saint slew the giant beast.

☑️ Wander through the Grand Canal of Murano

The Grand Canal of Murano is much smaller than the one in Venice, but it is also much less crowded. The area has shops and restaurants, and is the perfect place for a relaxing walk while in Murano.

Visiting Murano and Burano on your own is also a great option. I recommend following this Burano and Murano day trip itinerary, starting in Burano and ending in Murano.

To get to Burano, simply take the vaporetto (water bus) from Venice’s Fondamenta Nova ferry terminal (F.te Nova). Line 12 stops at Murano, Mazzorbo, Torcello, Burano, Treporti and Punta Sabbioni.
