The British Summertime concert in London's Hyde Park offered an intriguing line up of bands topped by the - and I don't use the word lightly - legendary Neil Young. Last year I attended Young's 'Alchemy' tour stop at Newcastle, which was a full frontal Crazy Horse assault on the senses which relied heavily on the excellent 'Psychedelic Pill' album. The current tour has found Young having to make some late adjustments to whatever he might have had due to regular Crazy Horse bassist Billy Talbot suffering a mild stroke a few weeks ago and, sensibly, sitting the latest round of dates out on doctor's advice in order to ensure to make a full and speedy recovery. In response, Young has drafted in Rick Rosas, who played in the reformed Buffalo Springfield a few years back, and two backing vocalists Dorene Carter and YaDonna West. Some fans have argued that this, therefore, is Crazy Horse lite, but Young and band still served up a magnificent performance spanning his career from 1969's 'Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere' through to 2013's 'Psychedelic Pill'. Unlike the Newcastle show, Young surprised many by performing electric versions of the classics 'After The Goldrush' and 'Heart Of Gold' that had the older members of the audience hastily grabbing their cameras to snap selfies of themselves grooving to the classic tunes while also capturing Young on the big screen. Young has such a formidable back catalogue, that you could watch him perform ten shows in a row, playing a different set every night and still feel aggrieved that he didn't play a couple of your favourite numbers. Yes, if he didn't jam many of these songs out into 10 and 15 minute epics, he'd fit more numbers in, but that's not what the Horse are about. Taking a riff and riding it to its crest and then some is what the audience expect from the band and that's what they continue to deliver. The 'Ragged Glory' and 'Zuma' albums were well represented making up a third of the setlist, and hearing tracks like 'Goin' Home', 'Days That Used To Be' (which saw Young exchange "Old Black" for the first of several appearances of his beautiful white Gretsch Falcon), 'Love To Burn' and 'Barstool Blues' was an absolute joy. Just like at Newcastle there was another unreleased song, this time 'Who's Gonna Stand Up And Save The Earth' as well as blistering versions of 'Cinnamon Girl' and 'Rockin' In The Free World' and an encore of 'Down By The River'. It was a wonderful performance from the 68-year-old Young who plays with the passion and intensity of a twenty year old, and on this form it's easy to see why so many younger musicians cite him as an influence. Earlier in the day, Tom Odell admitted he couldn't believe he was on the same bill as Young and Jack Savoretti also on the bill recently covered 'The Needle And The Damage Done'. Special mention too to Poncho Sampedro, now seemingly fully recovered from last year's broken hand, who was sporting a t-shirt showing an x-ray of his hand, middle digit feistily extended. It actually took until the second song before I noticed it, and I admit, it made me laugh out loud.

With their newest album, Psychedelic Pill, Neil Young & Crazy Horse have produced their longest album to date, which consists of fuzzy, psychedelic jams spanning over long periods of time. These lengthy songs of extended jam sessions present themselves best in a live setting when it is more natural for Neil Young & Crazy Horse to take the reins of their music during anytime of the performance to enhance the song. It is also exciting to see the band create some new additions to the songs right in front of your eyes. Although the songs go on for large amounts of time, it feels like they go by in a flash, entrancing the audience with immediate hooks that are continually resonated throughout the songs in various ways.

Neil Young & Crazy Horse clearly display they have great chemistry with each other, effortlessly playing off one another in the most natural portrayal of organic music making. Going to a Neil Young & Crazy Horse concert is like going to a psychedelic rodeo. Hazy lights of purple and blue shimmer on the stage with the crazy horse logo lit up behind the band. Neil Young is often seen sporting a cowboy hat while playing his crunchy, western influenced guitar riffs, sometimes, which he puts through a phaser creating interesting psychedelic tones.

Neil Young & Crazy Horse show magnificent signs of tenacity and dedication, effortlessly blazing through extensive jams such as “Driftin’ Back” like they were born to do so. The band is all in perfect sync when they play the inspirational, “Ramada Inn”, making the audience feel like they could stay in this psychedelic trance, listening to the song forever.

This was the last show of Neil Young and Crazy Horse's European tour. Part of the local Foire aux Vins which is like a UK County Show with burlesque and rock & roll instead of sheepdog tricks. The show followed a similar format to the earlier part of the tour but as it has rolled on the message both environmental (Be The Rain) and political (Living With War) has become sharper. There are few performers as electric as Neil & the Horse when they're on and they were on last night. The set lasted a couple of hours but the audience would have danced all night. And the best sound I have heard at one of his shows since Hammersmith 2008.

Inside Neil Young and Crazy Horse’s New LP ‘World Record’: ‘The Rock Gods Were With Us’

A little over six months ago, Neil Young reached out to the three members of Crazy Horse and told them he was ready to cut a new LP. They recorded their last two albums (2019’s Colorado and 2021’s Barn ) at remote studios in Colorado where they occasionally had to use oxygen tanks to deal with the high altitude, but this time around he wanted to head to Malibu, California, so they could work with Rick Rubin at his beachfront studio, Shangri-La.

Young’s history with Crazy Horse goes all the way back to 1969’s Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere , but they were just one of several bands he juggled over the past five decades. He kept them on the sidelines for much of the 2000s and 2010s, only calling them in for 2003’s Greendale and the twin 2012 releases Americana and Psychedelic Pill. But ever since guitarist Frank “Poncho” Sampedro retired in 2018 and was replaced by Nils Lofgren , they’ve been his sole studio band. World Record marks the first time in Young’s career that he’s used Crazy Horse for three consecutive studio albums.

The songs for World Record started coming together not long after Barn came out in December 2021. “Neil reached out to us and was like, ‘Hey, I’ve got two or three songs,'” says Lofgren. “‘When I get a batch, we’ll record again. Maybe in the summer.'”

But the tunes came faster than Young expected, and he asked them in late April of this year if getting together on May 1 — just one day after a full moon — was possible. “I went, ‘May 1?’ recalls Lofgren. “‘That’s not summer. That’s a week and a half away!'”

Fortunately, Bruce Springsteen’s decision to bump his tour with the E Street Band from 2022 to 2023 meant that Lofgren had a wide-open calendar. He originally planned on driving to Malibu with his wife Amy, since he hates flying in the age of Covid, and his accordion is very difficult to ship. But just a few days before they planned on leaving, the Lofgrens watched the Showtime docuseries Shangri-La about Rubin’s longtime studio.

Prior to the sessions, Young sent Lofgren and Talbot rudimentary demos he’d recorded at home on the piano. He often had little more than a chorus and a single verse. “That’s all Billy and I needed,” says Lofgren. “It allowed us to make some chord charts, have an idea where the tunes were headed, and not show up completely in the dark.”

Molina was sent nothing in advance since Young wanted the drummer to just feel the songs out in the moment without any forethought. All the tracks were tracked live to tape, even Young’s vocals. “We didn’t play any of the songs over and over,” says Talbot. “We’d usually just do them once or twice.”

Young is credited as a co-producer alongside Rubin, but nobody doubted who was calling the shots. “The idea of using a producer means turning over control,” says Lofgren. “That’s not something in Neil’s nature. He used Rick as a guide. It was never like, ‘You’ve got to do it this way.’ That’s just not going to work with Neil, and Rick knows that. But he would sometimes say things like, ‘Why don’t you try that one on acoustic guitar?’ or ‘Try going down a different road on this one.’ At times, it allowed Neil to show up and just be a singer and guitar player.”

“Rick is a real music fan,” adds Talbot. “He likes authentic things, things that happen naturally. He was really good for us.”

The album begins with Lofgren telling Young, “We caught something there,” and Young agreeing: “We caught a feeling.” They then kick into “Love Earth.” As the title suggests, it’s a love song to the planet that dreams of a pollution-free world. “The sky was blue and all the air so clean,” Young sings. “The water crystal clear/We lived by the sun and had it all/We were living the dream.”

The energy picks up on the feedback-drenched “Break the Chain” and cools down on the nostalgic “The Long Day Before,” before kicking back into high gear on the 15-minute album closer “Chevrolet” — a guitar-driven tune that would have fit seamlessly onto the guitar-heavy records from Crazy Horse’s past. It’s about memories triggered inside Young upon seeing an old Chevrolet. “New mama said we have a baby on the way,” Young sings, seemingly referencing his relationship with actress Carrie Snodgress in the Seventies and their son Zeke. “Soon enough we lost all contact/We were young and foolish/That’s all behind us now.”

“That song was a journey,” says Lofgren. “We just kept playing and playing. We’d hit things where Neil would go off, and then I’d do a counterpoint. It sounded like we’d been driving through a rough town, and then we got to a highway where we’d be cruising. It was a whole new level for the band, and it just felt great.”

It’s the kind of song that would sound incredible on a concert stage, but Young hasn’t played a single show since Farm Aid in September 2019. It’s the longest break of his career by a wide margin. He’s hinted that he’s open to the idea of concerts in 2023, but the E Street Band will keep Lofgren busy for the whole year, and possibly into 2024.

He continues: “Bruce started booking shows and selling tickets for a tour next year. And then this Neil album happened and all this other stuff. I can’t get them to let me make the schedule. They’re two great tours. I get to do one of them. Champaign problems.”

Young has floated the idea in the past that Micah Nelson might sub in for Lofgren on a Crazy Horse tour. “That’s been mentioned,” says Lofgren. “I’ve seen Promise of the Real play with Neil, and they’re fabulous. But look, I just made this great record. I think it’s the best of the last three with Neil and Crazy Horse. It bums me out talking about being replaced for a tour.”

In the meantime, Lofgren is trying to come to terms with the idea of missing out on a possible Crazy Horse tour. “It’s such a drag, man,” he says. “It’s frustrating. But you know what? One day at a time. I’m doing what Neil and I often talk about, living in the possibility of now. I also just need to be philosophical about it. What am I going to do? I’m in two great bands.”

In this band, Lofgren is the baby at age 71. Young is 77, and both Molina and Talbot are 79. “We’re no spring chickens,” says Talbot. “We’ve sprung. We’ve got to put down the real thing. There’s nothing left to do but that.”

Neil Young + Promise Of The Real announce a new live album, Noise & Flowers, that captures the group in all their glory on their 2019 European tour. 

Noise & Flowers documents a 9-date tour that began just two weeks after Young’s lifetime friend and manager of more than 50 years, Elliot Roberts, passed away at age 76. Performing alongside a photograph of Roberts taped to his road case, Young approached each show as a celebratory memorial service to honor his late friend. It’s a trek that Neil describes as “wondrous.”

Noise & Flowers explores all corners of his vast discography.  It balances all-timer anthems (“Mr. Soul,” “Helpless,” “Rockin’ in the Free World”) with rarely aired ‘70s deep cuts (“Field of Opportunity,” “On the Beach”) and ’90s gems (“From Hank to Hendrix,” “Throw Your Hatred Down”). His frequent backing band since 2015, Promise of the Real effectively bridges the extremes in Young’s sound, infusing his raging rockers and country serenades with their casual brilliance and telepathic intuition.

Noise & Flowers’ companion film, directed by Bernard Shakey and dhlovelife, emphasizes both the intimacy and ecstasy of these performances.

Neil Young Announces First Tour Since 2019

Neil Young has announced a tour—his first since 2019 . Earlier this week, Young told paid subscribers of Neil Young Archives that the solo acoustic shows will feature songs that he’s never performed live before. Check out the tour dates, featuring special guest Chris Pierce, below.

“I don’t want to come back and do the same songs again,” Young said (according to Rolling Stone ). “I’ll feel like I was on some sort of carnival ride. I’d rather be doing these others songs I haven’t done…. I won’t have to compare how I’m doing ‘Heart of Gold’ to [how I played it in] 1970, 1980, 1990, 2000, 2010, 2020.”

Among the songs Young mentioned as part of the new setlist are the Pearl Jam collaboration “Song X” from 1995’s Mirror Ball , “Prime of Life” from 1994’s Sleeps With Angels , and the Trans outtake “If You Got Love.”

Young began performing at one-off appearances earlier this year, including a rally for old-growth trees and at a Willie Nelson tribute show. In 2021 and 2022 , he pulled out of Farm Aid due to concerns over the pandemic . “I am not ready for that yet. I don’t think it is safe in the pandemic,” he wrote, adding, “I miss it very much.”

In March, Young wrote a post critical of Ticketmaster and the contemporary touring industry. “It’s over. The old days are gone,” the musician wrote. “I get letters blaming me for $3,000.00 tickets for a benefit I am doing. That money does not go to me or the benefit. Artists have to worry about ripped off fans blaming them for Ticketmaster add-ons and scalpers. Concert tours are no longer fun. Concert tours not what they were.”

Young’s criticism of Ticketmaster followed his recent boycott of Spotify and his apparent subtweet of Beck’s NFL-sponsored (and Grammy-nominated ) cover of “ Old Man .”

Neil Young announces tour, playing songs he’s never played live before

It will be the singer-songwriter's first tour since 2019

Neil Young has announced a tour of the West Coast of the US, his first tour in four years, at which he will play songs rarely or never aired live before.

The solo acoustic tour will begin next month with 13 gigs currently announced, and as Rolling Stone reports, Young shared the news with paid subscribers of his Neil Young Archives website on a Zoom call this week (June 7).

On the call, he revealed that he will be playing around 15 songs that he has rarely or never played live before.

“I don’t want to come back and do the same songs again,” he said. “I’ll feel like I was on some sort of carnival ride. I’d rather be doing these others songs I haven’t done… I won’t have to compare how I’m doing ‘Heart of Gold’ to [how I played it in] 1970, 1980, 1990, 2000, 2010, 2020…”

He added: “They’re not new songs. They’re old songs. But I wake up with them in my head every morning.

“They are songs that apply to my life right now, and apply to everyone’s lives in this era that we’re in. Some of them were written 10, 20, 30, 40 years ago, but never really played live.”

Earlier this year, Young made his live comeback at a march and rally in support of the United For Old Growth campaign , which is looking to stop the Canadian government from allowing logging companies from destroying old-growth forests.

Since then, he has reunited with Stephen Stills at a show in Los Angeles in April and performed at Willie Nelson’s 90th birthday party alongside Snoop Dogg , Beck and more.

Neil Young’s last public performance these was in September 2019, when the veteran artist headlined a benefit concert in Lake Hughes, California alongside Norah Jones  and  Father John Misty .

Since  COVID-19  was declared a pandemic in early 2020, Young said  he wouldn’t tour until the virus was “beat”  and  called on promoters to cancel “super-spreader” gigs .

Last year, Young confirmed he would  not be performing at Farm Aid 2022  because “I don’t think it is safe in the pandemic.”

Neil Young and Crazy Horse Announce New Album, Reveal First Track “Love Earth”

The Rick Rubin-produced LP arrives in November

Neil Young and Crazy Horse are back with a brand new studio album. The Rick Rubin-produced World Record arrives on November 18 via Warner Records. Stream the first song “Love Earth” now below.

“Real magic lasts and we think we have it,” Young said in a statement about the album. The new album was recorded live at Rubin’s Shangri-La Studios in Malibu, CA. It is the follow-up to Barn which came out last December.

Neil Young + Promise of the Real / Noise & Flowers

Neil Young will release a new live album that celebrates his 2019 European tour with his occasional backing band Promise Of The Real.

Noise & Flowers documents a nine-date tour that began just two weeks after Young’s lifetime friend and manager of more than 50 years, Elliot Roberts, passed away at the age of 76. Young approached each show as a celebratory memorial service to honour his late friend. It’s a trek he describes as “wondrous.”

In the album’s sleeve notes, Young says, “Playing in his memory [made it] one of the most special tours ever. We hit the road and took his great spirit with us into every song. This music belongs to no one. It’s in the air. Every note was played for music’s great friend, Elliot.”

The live album ( #21 in Young’s ongoing Archives Performance Series ) includes songs such as ‘Mr. Soul’, ‘Helpless’, ‘Rockin’ in the Free World’, ‘On The Beach’ and ‘From Hank to Hendrix’. The audio is offered on CD and a 2LP vinyl presentation, and a concert film was made at the time directed by NY alter-ego Bernard Shakey and Daryl Hannah (who Neil had married the year before). This is included on blu-ray in the CD+2LP+blu-ray box set and is available separately via Neil’s The Greedy Hand online store (and now on Amazon).

Noise & Flowers will be released on 5 August 2022 via Warner Records.
