My Favourite: Private Wine & Charcuterie Tour in Niagara on the Lake

A private tour of 4 wineries with local cheeses and meats!

Why You Need a Niagara on the Lake Wine Tour

The Niagara region is one of the most beautiful places in Canada. With its stunning scenery, world-class wines, and friendly people, Niagara on the Lake is a must-visit for any wine lover .

A Niagara on the Lake wine tour is the perfect way to relax and escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life.

Not to mention, it’s a great way to learn about wine! There’s nothing like learning about wine in its natural setting, and Niagara on the Lake is the perfect place to do so!

I’ve tried finding the best wineries on my own, which often ended up with me scrolling endlessly on Google until there wasn’t any time to actually visit one. And if you try to visit more than one, you have to worry about who is the designated driver.

With a local wine tour, all of those problems go away. You’ll be able to visit multiple wineries in one day and have someone else worry about getting you home safe!

Plus, they even come with local cheeses and detailed information about the vineyards and the wine. So you’ll leave feeling like you’ve had a personalized sommelier, rather than sipping wines you have no clue about.

Group Tours vs Private Tours: Which is Better?

Group tours are a great way to meet people and learn about wine, beer, and spirits from a local guide. These tours are more affordable, but you may not get the same attention as you would on a private tour.

Private tours are a great way to get an intimate look at Niagara on the Lake’s wineries, breweries, and distilleries. These tours are more expensive, but you’ll have a personal guide who can answer all your questions.

If you’re looking for a more customized experience, a private tour is the way to go.

If you’re looking for a great value, a group tour is the way to go.

Whichever you choose, you’re sure to have a great time!

Niagara-on-the-Lake (NOTL) is world-renowned for its wines, being one of the four appellations (grape-growing regions) in Ontario alongside Lake Erie North Shore, Twenty Valley and Prince Edward County.

Did you know? Niagara-on-the-Lake is the birthplace of Ontario’s modern wine industry.

It’s not surprising that winery hopping is one of the best things to do in Niagara-on-the-Lake, and also in Niagara Falls, which is only about a 25-minute drive.

In fact, Niagara-on-the-Lake is recognized as the Prettiest Town in Canada.

This is also what makes the region’s wines so special: its terroir is influenced by its proximity to Lake Ontario, Niagara River and Escarpment.

During a weekend, my friends and I did a day trip to Niagara-on-the-Lake for a winery trip!

We used the the Winemakers’ Selection Tasting Pass , which allowed us to visit 25 Niagara on the Lake wineries and sample their winemaker’s selection of best/rare/interesting wines for only $25!

Note: As of 2024, the pass now costs $46.50 (plus taxes and fees) for 21 wineries in Niagara-on-the-Lake, and valid from January 2-December 31 2023, Mondays to Fridays.

It was seriously such a great deal and an awesome way to explore the wine country!

The pass itself is good throughout the year, but we wanted to see how many we can do in a day.

The result : 15 of the best Niagara on the Lake wineries and 20+ samples of wine! And, yes, we had a designated driver.

We’re covering them all in this Niagara wine and wineries guide!

Wineries in Niagara-on-the-Lake

The Niagara-on-the-Lake appellation is what makes these wines unique and special.

Niagara-on-the-Lake wineries can be categorized in the sub-appellation they belong based on the geographic region they reside: Niagara Lakeshore, Four Mile Creek, St. David’s Bench and Niagara River.

During the trip, we were only able to visit three of the sub-appellations (Niagara Lakeshore, Four Mile Creek and Niagara River).

This winery guide covers some of the best wineries in Niagara on the Lake in these areas.

Pandemic Note from Wineries of Niagara-on-the-Lake : “Many wineries now require appointments in order to manage the space at their wineries to maintain proper physical distancing.”

Niagara River Sub-Appellation Wineries

These are the wineries in Niagara-on-the-Lake that are directly adjacent from the Niagara River.

Inniskillin Wines

Inniskillin is one of the oldest wineries in Niagara-on-the-Lake.

They are one of the most popular wineries for icewine, and, therefore, it was fitting that their winemaker’s selection was the 2017 Riesling Ice Wine.

According to Winemaker Bruce Nicholson, riesling is the “ultimate variety for icewine” because of its natural high acidity that balances with the rich concentrated flavours.

One thing you’ll notice is the term “VQA” on the label.

VQA means Vintners Quality Alliance, and they ensure strict quality assurance that the Niagara-on-the-Lake wineries produce wines that are entirely made from grapes grown in the region.

Inniskillin have one of the larger estates in the region, which features several restored and redesigned historic buildings including the Brae Burn Barn (tasting room) as well as an exclusive dining forum, Founders’ Hall.

Riverview Cellars

Just around the corner from Inniskillin is Riverview Cellars, a family-run winery adjacent to the Niagara River.

Winemaker Alyssa Bator’s selection is the 2015 Angelina’s Reserve Gewurztraminer, which has aromas of rose petals and lychee, and tastes of peach and ginger.

In the Wine Country Ontario’s Travel Guide , you’ll learn Wine Tasting 101 with these four S(imple) tips: See, Swirl, Smell and Swish.

Seeing the colour of the wine by holding it up against light actually gives a hint about the grape variety, and indicates age of the wine or vintage.

Reif Estate Winery

Along the Niagara River as well is Reif Estate Winery, one of founding family wineries in Niagara on the Lake, founded in 1982.

Winemaker Roberto DiDomenico’s selection is the 2016 Shiraz Reserve that features shiraz harvested from a 15 year-old farm across the street from the winery.

Lailey Winery

North of Reif Estate Winery along the Niagara River is Lailey Winery, which has one of the oldest plantings in the Niagara region on a 23-acre property.

The winemaker’s selection is the 2013 Chardonnay Curious made from the oldest chardonnay vines in the region dating back 1975.

This was definitely the best chardonnay I’ve had.

It was light and crisp, but had lingering after-taste of peaches and pear.

Peller Estates Winery & Restaurant

The nothernmost winery along Niagara River Sub-Appellation is Peller Estates Winery, which started out from British Columbia’s Okanagan Valley.

Here we were offered a flight of three wines, which included the winemaker’s selection along with the staff’s selection of 2016 Vintage Sauvignon Blanc and 2016 Vintage Pinot Noir.

2016 Vintage Pinot Noir at Peller Estates Winery in Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario

Winemaker Katie Dickieson’s selection is the Andrew Peller Signature Series Ice Cuvee, one of their most awarded wines.

This was the first time I’ve had Ice Cuvee, and it ended up being my favourite for the trip.

I was mindblown by this traditional sparkling wine mixed with vidal icewine.

It had the perfect balance of being in between white wine and icewine in sweetness, but still highlighting the tropical fruits and citrus notes from the Chardonnay and Pinot Noir.

Among all the Niagara-on-the-Lake wineries, Peller Estates is the only one serving Ice Cuvee so be sure to make a stop if you want to try!

Joseph’s Estate Wines

After our lunch in Old Town, we continued with our Niagara-on-the-Lake wineries tour to Joseph’s Estate Winery, founded by Dr. Joseph Pohorly, a pioneer of Icewine in 1980s.

During our trip, they didn’t have the winemaker’s selection available so they let us try the Proprietor’s Reserve 2014 Riesling instead, which is the wine for the Sip & Sizzle Touring Pass.

Stratus Vineyards

Nearby Joseph’s Estate Wines along Niagara Stone Road is Stratus Vineyards.

This is one of the best Niagara-on-the-Lake wineries with interesting architecture: a futuristic-looking gravity flow winery distinguished by its LEED-certified facility.

Winemaker JL Groux’s selection is 2014 Stratus Red, which is a blend of Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah.

I actually really liked the wine, even more so as I enjoyed the beautiful views outside the patio.

Jackson Triggs Estate Winery

If you’re looking for Niagara-on-the-Lake wineries that are close to Old Town, the closet one is Jackson Triggs Estate Winery.

Winemaker Marco Piccoli’s selection is the 2014 Grand Reserve Entourage Sparkling Sauvignon Blanc, made in the traditional method but with a not so traditional grape.

This was my first time trying Sparkling Sauvignon Blanc, and I really enjoyed it!

I find this is a great bubbly option with its crisp and refreshing taste.

Among the best wineries in Niagara-on-the-Lake, Jackson Triggs Estate Winery is dubbed Canada’s most awarded winery.

Strewn Winery

Our next stops were Niagara on the Lake wineries directly adjacent to Lake Ontario.

First stop was Strewn Winery, which started as a local fruit cannery and evolved to a winery.

Here we got to sample two wines.

Winemaker Marc Bradshaw’s selection is the 2016 Sparkler, a Sparkling Sauvignon Blanc to celebrate Strewn’s 20th anniversary.

Did you know? The Sparkler is the first sparkling wine they crafted.

Among the Niagara-on-the-Lake wineries, Strewn is the only one with both an on-site Wine Country Cooking School and a restaurant called the OLiv.

2016 Sparkler at Strewn Winery in Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario

They wanted us to try the 2016 Terroir Pinot Blanc because Strewn grows about 10% of all the Pinot Blanc in Ontario which makes it a specialty for them.

I have to say it is one of the best Pinot Blanc I’ve had, and I actually liked this more than the Sparkler so I’m glad we got to try this one too.

Hinterbrook Estate Winery

Right next to Strewn is Hinterbrook Estate Winery, is one of the unique wineries in Niagara-on-the-Lake committed to practicing ecological sustainability by using solar and geothermal power and water recycling to create their wines.

Hinterbrook Estate Winery didn’t have the winemaker’s selection available, so they let us choose one wine of our choice from the tasting menu.

I sampled the 2014 Special Select Late Harvest Riesling, which I found was a really great alternative to Icewine if you want something less sweet.

Konzelmann Estate Winery

Next stop was Konzelmann Estate Winery, founded by winemaking pioneer Herbert Konzelmann from Germany in 1984.

This is one of the best wineries in Niagara-on-the-Lake if you want to be by the lake because it is Niagara’s only lakefront winery

Here we got a flight of two wines of our choice.

I tried the 2015 Barrel Aged Merlot Reserved because I love merlot, and the 2016 Vidal Special Late Harvest to finish on a sweeter note.

Palatine Hills Estate Winery

Our last stop on the Niagara Lakeshore sub-appellation was Palatine Hills Estate Winery, a family run winery that started as a vineyard growing grapes for consumption.

Here we were offered a flight of three wines of our choice.

The first I tried was the 2016 Neufeld Vineyard Reserve Chardonnay which was a new release.

2016 Neufeld Vineyard Reserve Chardonnay at Palatine Hills Estate Winery in Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario

For my second one, I initially wanted to try the 2012 Neufeld Vineyard Reserve Merlot, but they ran out.

I opted for 2012 Neufeld Vineyard Reserve Meritage since it has 40% Merlot, 40% Cabernet Sauvignon and 20% Cabernet Franc.

It won Silver in the Intervin Wine Awards 2017.

2012 Neufeld Vineyard Reserve Meritage at Palatine Hills Estate Winery in Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario

My last one would be a sweet one again.

I got the 2016 Gewurztraminer Icewine because it was my first time seeing it.

All the other Niagara-on-the-Lake wineries we visited didn’t have this.

These best wineries in Niagara-on-the-Lake are located at the centre of the sub-appellations: south of Niagara Lakeshore, west of Niagara River and north of St. David’s Bench.

Marynissen Estates Winery

Our third Niagara on the Lake wineries stop was Marynissen Estates Winery.

Winemaker Marc Pistor’s selection is the single varietal 2015 Cabernet Franc to highlight the region’s soil and climate that allows for this great version of a versatile wine.

If you love Cabernet Sauvignon, Marynissen is one of the best wineries in Niagara-on-the-Lake to visit because it is home to the oldest commercial planting of Cabernet Sauvignon in Canada.

Trius Winery & Restaurant

As the day was ending, we saved the last two Niagara-on-the-Lake wineries which closed the latest.

First one was at Trius Winery & Restaurant, which has the largest underground sparkling wine cellar in Canada.

Did you know? Trius’ winemaker is 2016 Winemaker of the Year Craig McDonald.

Here we were offered a flight of 3 wines of our choice (left to right in photo): Trius Rose, Showcase Riesling Icewine and Showcase Cabernet Franc Icewine.

To fully experience the icewine, follow the last S of Wine Tasting 101.

Swish the wine in your mouth for 5-10 seconds, and experience the burst of flavours evolving.

Wayne Gretzky Estates Winery & Distillery

Last stop for the Niagara wineries trip was Wayne Gretzky Estates, Niagara’s newest destination winery and distillery with a whiskey bar patio and skating rink.

Winemaker Craig McDonald’s selection is the 2015 Estate Series Shiraz Cabernet, a blend of 62% Shiraz, 23% Cabernet Sauvignon and 15% Cabernet Franc.

What makes this blend so unique is each varietal received barrel malolactic fermentation, then nine months of oak barrel aging before the wines were blended together.

The final assemblage was then put back into barrel for a further 3 months (20% of the barrels were new oak; 50% American oak and 50% French oak).

How beautiful. I'd had no idea this area was home to so many wineries either. Quite brilliant. Wayne Gretzky's place needs to top my list though. I love sports so it'd be a perfect match.

Travelling Foodie

Yeah, the Winemakers' Selection Tasting Pass is such a great way to explore all the wineries. I didn't know it was that many too - got to try a lot of new wineries because of the pass. But yeah, Wayne Gretzky's is great if you love sports - they even have a sports bar on-site LOL

Niagara Winery FAQs

How many wineries are in niagara.

There are more than 50 wineries in Canada’s Niagara wine region and about half of them are located in and around Niagara-on-the-Lake. There are also more than 20 wineries in Niagara County on the US side of Niagara falls.

What time of year is best for Niagara wine tours?

The best time for Niagara wine tours is typically during the spring, summer, and early fall. The weather is most pleasant during these times, with long sunny days and warm temperatures. So this is the ideal time to explore the vineyards and the surrounding countryside.

However, later in the fall, from October to November, is also great time to visit Niagara, as the landscape lights up with some of the region’s most vibrant fall colours.

What type of wine is Niagara known for?

Niagara is best known for its production of Ice wine, a sweet dessert wine made from grapes harvested while frozen on the vine. The region also produces excellent cool-climate wine varieties such as Riesling, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Cabernet Franc.

How does a wine tasting tour work?

During a Niagara wine tasting tour you will typically visit multiple wineries, where you’ll be guided through tastings of various wines by local wine consultants. They’ll teach you about the winemaking process, grape varietals, and flavour profiles while you sample a selection of wines.

Sometimes food, such as charcuterie or cheese pairings, will be included. And, certain tours may give you the option to stop at a local restaurant for lunch.

On Niagara wine tours, a local guide and transportation between wineries is also usually provided. And there will be an opportunity to purchase bottles of wine to take home.

How much time do you spend at each winery?

On most wine tours which include multiple stops, you’ll have around 45 minutes at each winery. However, this can sometimes be longer, if the stop is for a more comprehensive tasting, tour of the facilities, or even for lunch. And private tours can be customized to allow for longer or shorter stops, depending on your preferences.

What is ice wine?

Ice wine is a type of sweet dessert wine made from grapes that have been left to freeze naturally on the vine. This freezing process concentrates the sugars and flavours in the grapes, resulting in a rich, intensely sweet wine with a balanced acidity. It’s typically served chilled and is paired well with desserts.

Do you tip on wine tours?

Tipping on a wine tour is up to you, but is not usually expected. As most Niagara wine tours are booked and paid for in advance , you won’t actually have to pay anything on the day, unless you purchase bottles of wine or food during the tour.

For bottle purchases a tip is not expected. But for restaurant food eaten onsite, such as lunch, it’s customary to add a tip between 15% to 20% in Canada.

It can also be a nice gesture to provide a tip to your tour guide and driver. However, this is very much at your own discretion.

What do you wear to a wine tour in Niagara?

Most wineries in Niagara don’t have a specific dress code. I would recommend wearing comfortable clothes and shoes, as you will likely do a lot of standing throughout the day. And, if you’re going to be doing a bike wine tour , make sure you wear something you can easily cycle in.

What is the difference between Niagara Falls and Niagara-on-the-Lake?

Niagara Falls is the small city and bustling tourist destination which is home to Niagara’s famous waterfall. Whereas Niagara-on-the-Lake is a small lakeside heritage community, often deemed the prettiest town in Ontario, known for its historic architecture, wineries, and theatres.

Niagara-on-the-Lake is only around 25-kilometres from Niagara Falls, and can be reached along the scenic Niagara Parkway. If you’ll be spending some time in the Niagara region, it’s absolutely worth visiting both Niagara Falls and Niagara-on-the-Lake.

How old do you have to be to go on a Niagara wine tour?

You must be of legal drinking age to participate in a Niagara wine tour, which is 19 years old in Ontario.

These Train Rides Through Canada’s Fall Colors Will Leave You Speechless

Everything you need to know about traveling with canada’s flagship railway.

Fall might just be the perfect time to visit Canada.

With summer crowds disappearing and prices dropping, it is an ideal season for travel. Fall also brings amazing beauty, as vibrant colors blanket Canada’s mountains, maple trees, and forests. The crisp air creates the perfect atmosphere for hikes in the many national parks, while the fall harvest offers the flavors of the season (warm apple cider, anyone?).

One of the best ways to experience this beauty is by train. VIA Rail, Canada’s national railway, offers special fall foliage vacation packages in October, giving you a front-row seat to the beautiful autumn landscapes. Having traveled with VIA Rail ourselves—from Vancouver to Toronto—we can confidently say it’s a fall adventure worth considering.

In this article, we’ll explore some of the best fall foliage tours VIA Rail has to offer and share our personal experience about what train travel in Canada is like.

VIA Rail’s Top 3 Fall Tours

Vacation planning can be a hassle, but VIA Rail makes vacation exactly what a vacation should be, stress-free. Each VIA Rail tour includes a train ride in a sleeper car, hotels, select meals, guided activities, airport transfers, and more. The trips across Canada can be uniquely personalized to each traveler’s needs and take place all year long.

Here are the top trips that VIA Rail recommends taking this fall for the perfect Canadian adventure:

1. Fall Colours from Quebec to the Maritimes:

This 10 day journey highlights some of the most beautiful cities and stunning fall foliage in Canada. Beginning in Montreal, guests on this tour will explore the best museums, art galleries, and food y before hopping on the train over to Quebec City. Here, guests will find a little taste of Europe with sightseeing tours through the European-inspired architecture and countryside. Next an overnight train brings guests to Moncton, New Brunswick where they can explore before a ferry brings them to the seaside town of St. Andrews. A drive from Digby, Nova Scotia to Halifax through colorful national forests and rocky coastlines is the perfect way to end this epic fall adventure.

2. Canadian History and Culture by Train:

This 10 day journey from Toronto to Quebec City offers the perfect combination of nature and history. In addition to exploring the city of Toronto, the tour visits the picturesque town of Niagara-On-the-Lake to experience vibrant fall colors against the background of Lake Ontario and Niagara Falls. Next is a train ride to Ottawa to experience the heart of Canadian culture through river cruises, museum tours and walks in the crisp fall air. The tour finishes with beautiful train rides to the charming European-esque cities of Montreal and Quebec City.

3. Canada Coast to Coast by Train

This 20 day coast to coast journey, with 7 days and 4 nights spent cruising on Via Rail’s best trains, is truly the ultimate Canadian adventure. The tour allows guests to experience what fall is like from Halifax to Vancouver and everywhere in between. Similar to the 2 trips above, the tour stops in Halifax, Montreal, Quebec City, Toronto and Niagara before continuing by train to Ontario. The time spent traveling through the rolling plains of Saskatchewan and Alberta gives the perfect opportunity to relax in the observation car and take photos of the scenery. The crisp fall air is the perfect setting to hike through the famed Jasper and Banff National Parks. Then a 2 day trip on the Rocky Mountaineer train drives you through Yoho National Park to coastal Vancouver to end this coast to coast journey.

Our Experience with VIA Rail

Earlier this year, we embarked on the 95 hour train ride from Vancouver to Toronto with VIA Rail, to complete the 2nd longest train ride in the world. This journey quickly became one of our favorite train rides in the world and we are tempted to go back and experience one of the fall foliage tours for ourselves.

We traveled in a Prestige-class room, the railways most luxurious of their travel classes. Our room included a comfy couch, pull-down bed, plenty of storage, a private bathroom, and a huge window to enjoy the sweeping views of Canada’s cities and mountains.

One of our favorite features of VIA trains are the observation cars at the back of the train, which offer panoramic views of the surrounding landscapes. We spent a lot of time here because this journey seriously had some of the best views we have ever seen on a train. Prestige-class passengers receive additional perks like afternoon canapes and reserved business-class seats in the observation car.

Included in our ticket were all the meals and alcohol for the duration of our journey. Train food can be hit or miss, but the food on this train was actually some of our favorite food we’ve ever had. The menu switched up every day, depending on what chef was onboard, but it looked something like this:

Breakfast: Banana pecan pancakes, omelets, or veggie scramble laid on a bed of hashbrowns.

Lunch: Smoked salmon flatbread, veggie burgers, chicken pot pie, curry, or falafel wraps.

Dinner: Lasagna, pork tenderloin, potato chip crusted cod, or chicken Florentine.

VIA Rail also does their best to fill the menu with as many Canadian products as possible, so the wine list only included wines that were made in Canada.

There are not too many activities to do on the train, but that meant we were kind of forced to slow down and relax, which was actually very nice. We spent our days enjoying the views, reading, sipping coffee and eating delicious food. When the crew hosted bingo night, complete with prizes, we had fun participating and meeting other passengers on the train.

If you’re looking for the ultimate fall adventure (or have been dying to embark on your first train trip) we’d highly recommend checking out Via Rail for an unforgettable journey through Canada. From the vibrant colors of Nova Scotia and Quebec to the majestic mountains of Canada’s best national parks, trains offer a fun and unique way to experience different parts of Canada during one of its most beautiful seasons.
