Northeastern’s flagship campus builds on Boston’s legacy of innovation. Students tackle some of the world’s most pressing problems alongside expert faculty in our more than 30 federally funded research centers; 3D print models and laser cut projects inside the university’s cutting-edge Snell Library; and apply what they learn in high-tech classrooms to real-world challenges facing local nonprofits, for-profits, and government agencies.
Boston’s Job Market
Home to industry leaders such as Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Boston Public Schools, State Street, John Hancock, and Vertex, Boston is a hub for healthcare, education, finance, business, biotechnology, and the life sciences.
Health services and education represent the city’s largest sectors. Between January 2015 and January 2016, those two industries alone created a combined 16,900 jobs, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics . Another 11,600 careers have emerged in the professional and business services and financial activities sectors since January 2015.
Our graduate degree and certificate programs are aligned with local market needs. By combining academics with hands-on experience, students graduate prepared to tackle the challenges facing Boston’s biggest industries.
Campus Highlights
Groundbreaking research in cutting-edge facilities.
Our more than 30 research centers and institutes include one of only 12 Centers of Excellence funded by the Department of Homeland Security and a Marine Science Center developing robotic technology to detect underwater mines and coastal threats.
Students can pursue their research interests in state-of-the-art facilities, such as the George J. Kostas Research Institute for Homeland Security , a center dedicated to advancing the development of societal resilience in the face of 21st-century risks, and the Dukakis Center for Urban and Regional Policy , which identifies and implements real solutions to the critical challenges facing urban areas throughout Greater Boston, the Commonwealth, and the nation.

Applying Academics to Real-World Experiences
Northeastern’s Career Services consistently rank in the top two nationwide by The Princeton Review. Students receive the support needed to map out a learning journey best aligned to their personal and professional goals.
Along that journey, students put theory into practice in a variety of ways, whether through in-class case studies, short-term, employer-sponsored projects, or co-op. Forty percent of Northeastern’s graduate programs offer full-time co-op opportunities, providing students the chance to gain hands-on, real-world experience within their field of study.
Serving Those Who Served Our Country
Northeastern is dedicated to helping members of the military achieve their educational and career aspirations. Our Center for the Advancement of Veterans and Servicemembers (CAVS) offers mentorship opportunities and career resources to help students more seamlessly transition to civilian life.
In an effort to make education more affordable, the university has invested $2 million into the federal Yellow Ribbon Program. Our military students experience an 83 percent graduation rate—much higher than the 51 percent national average reported by the U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs.
Our flagship campus is located in the heart of Boston between the city’s famed Museum of Fine Arts and Symphony Hall. A sanctuary of lush green spaces and tree-lined pathways, it truly is a campus within a city.
General campus tours are available through the Northeastern Visitor Center, but you can also arrange an appointment to visit your specific college of choice by contacting representatives from that college. Directions to Northeastern’s Boston campus are available online.

Visiting Northeastern: An Insider's Guide
Visiting a college campus is about so much more than the hour long student-led tours. It’s important to be able to envision yourself actually living wherever you may attend. For Northeastern , that means living right in the heart of Boston. Being an urban campus, there's a lot to see when visiting that you may not think to add to your itinerary. Northeastern is unique in the sense that it has a distinct campus feel while still being in a true urban setting. And so, students often create an extended campus for themselves throughout the surrounding city. Below you’ll find a list of spot frequented by Northeastern students that you may won't want to miss when visiting campus.
To start, grabbing something from Tatte is a must. From coffee and pastries to breakfast served all day, you’ll be sure to have a nice treat here. Located right on Huntington Ave in the center of campus, this café is busy 24/7. This stop also gives you an inside look at students hanging out or doing work. You’ll only find Tatte in Massachusetts and Metro DC, so be sure not to miss it!
2. Wollaston’s
Right next door to Tatte you’ll find Wollaston ’s, our local campus grocery store. Conveniently located right by a majority of the Freshman dorms, it's a super convenient stop– especially if it's raining or snowing–which could be often in Boston! While not a full-size grocery, they have all of the basics you could need as far as food, school supplies, household items and health and beauty. They also have a really good deli which students frequent for lunch. And the best part, they accept NEU dining dollars!
3. Huntington Ave
Be sure to walk down Huntington Ave towards Massachusetts Ave, which is the main road Northeastern ’s campus is on. This is definitely a great street to check out and takes you straight to the shops and restaurants in the Prudential Center, as well as many local hotels, stores and restaurants, most of which accept dining dollars as well.
4. Christian Science Plaza
If you keep walking in that direction, you’ll come across the beautiful building of the Christian Science Plaza and a big reflecting pool. This is such an unexpected scene on a main city street and is so peaceful. There are always people walking their dogs or hanging out around the water. This path is where I personally walk most frequently, as it takes you right outside the Prudential Center.
5. The Prudential Center
Home away from home! One of my very regular destinations near campus. In the Prudential Center , you’ll find great shopping and even more restaurants. Some of my favorite shopping spots are Aritzia , Oak + Fort , and the newly opening Alo. There is also an Apple store in case you need any new technology or the genius bar. There is a variety of dining - from faster food and coffee shops to sit-down restaurants. My go-tos are Pressed Cafe or Sweetgreen for lunch, or Eataly for delicious pizza, pasta and any Italian grocery item you can imagine. Being only a 10 minute walk from campus, The Prudential becomes a common hangout spot both during the week and on the weekends.
6. Newbury Street
The infamous Newbury Street is also a must see for your visit. From shops to restaurants and cafes, Newbury Street is a go to spot for Northeastern students, especially on the weekends, however I especially love to shop here when my parents are visiting. You won’t find mass department stores, but smaller shops, local boutiques mixed with stores like Lululemon, Zara, Brandy Melville… and for clothes to match the weather - North Face and Patagonia also are located here. One Sunday each month the streets are closed to all cars so the whole road is taken over by people. There’s always lots of people out and it’s a super fun way to spend the day.
7. Fenway Park
If time permits, I highly recommend going to a Red Sox game if they’re in season or doing a tour of the iconic Fenway Park . Students frequent the games with $9 student pricing and the field is walking distance from campus as well. A fun fact about Fenway is that graduation is actually held there for Northeastern Students!
7. Hockey Game
Another sporting recommendation - catch a Northeastern hockey game if you can! If you love football, you will have to try a hockey game - super fast paced and lots of action. You’ll get to see our student section, The Doghouse, in action too.
I hope this guide provides some insight to maximize your time spent visiting Northeastern and helps you better envision yourself as a student there!

Northeastern University to break ground on permanent campus in Portland, Maine
- Search Search
On Friday, the university will break ground on a permanent Portland campus — one of 13 in Northeastern’s global university system — that will be home to the Roux Institute and the new Alfond Center.
- Copy Link Link Copied!
When Northeastern University launched the Roux Institute in January 2020 — with a $100 million investment from Maine technology entrepreneur David Roux and his wife, Barbara — the goal was to ignite the Rouxs’ vision of a Portland-based research hub that would educate generations of local talent for the digital, artificial intelligence and life sciences sectors, and drive sustained economic growth in northern New England.
On Friday, Sept. 13, the university will break ground on a permanent Portland campus — one of 13 in Northeastern’s global university system — that will be home to the Roux Institute and the new Alfond Center. (Northeastern currently leases space on Fore Street.)
The Harold Alfond Foundation, which also invested $100 million in 2020 to support graduate students, research and co-ops with Maine employers, is making an additional investment in the permanent campus, along with a new commitment from David and Barbara Roux.
The new campus will transform the former industrial site of B&M Baked Beans into a state-of-the-art, multi-building complex that will serve as a hub for education and research about AI and other high-tech, high-growth fields.
Starting at 9 a.m., the Friday event will convene Northeastern President Joseph E. Aoun, David and Barbara Roux, representatives from the Alfond Foundation and elected officials in celebrating this milestone moment on the Portland waterfront.
The new campus will include a variety of buildings to be developed in phases:
-The Alfond Center, a new 245,000-square-foot learning, research and collaboration building that will house wet labs, computational labs, research spaces and classrooms.
-The 58,000-square-foot “Bean” building will undergo major rehabilitation and support innovation and entrepreneurship, providing workspaces for startups and businesses.

The $500 million project is expected to be completed in 2027.
When the new campus opens, enrollment on Northeastern’s Portland campus is expected to grow to 1,800 students in 2028, 2,300 in 2029 and 3,500 within five years.
Over 800 graduate students are currently enrolled on the Portland campus — 42% women, more than double the national average for STEM fields.
The campus will also allow for the growth of residency and accelerator programs focused on AI, health care, early-stage entrepreneurship, and historically underrepresented people. To date, 72 startups in residency and accelerator programs in Portland have raised $73 million in capital and created over 400 new jobs.
The new campus will include a new parking garage, an adjacent child care center, public green spaces, and pedestrian and bicycle paths on the shores of Casco Bay, which will be made accessible to the public for the first time in more than a century.
Beginning in 2011, Northeastern has been building a system of campuses designed to meet the talent and research needs of regional economies across North America and the United Kingdom.
Northeastern has approximately 22,000 undergraduate students across three of its campuses: Boston, London and Oakland. Another 20,000 students are enrolled in professional graduate programs — ranging from master’s degrees to doctoral and certificate programs.
Northeastern campuses that prioritize graduate and professional master’s programs include Seattle, Vancouver, Toronto, Miami,Silicon Valley and Charlotte, North Carolina, as well as Arlington, Virginia, and Portland.
Campuses in Burlington and Nahant, Massachusetts — home to Northeastern’s Marine Science Center — focus on research.
In May, Northeastern and Marymount Manhattan College, a private liberal arts college on the Upper East Side of New York City, announced their intention to merge.
