POP: PRETENDERS BEGIN CONCERT TOUR

THE Pretenders' triumphant performance at the Palladium on Saturday - the first of a series of local concerts - represented an impressive victory over recent misfortune and a bad press.

Last fall, this British-American quartet had to cancel its United States tour abruptly, including all of its New York dates, after the drummer, Martin Chambers, injured his hand. At the time of the mishap, the Pretenders' second album had received decidedly mixed reviews, and the media image they projected was of a prematurely jaded rock group only too eager for an excuse not to stay on the road.

But at Saturday's concert, the Pretenders offered what could well be a definitive fusion of pop tunefulness and new-wave energy, centered on Chrissie Hynde, their extraordinary Akron-born lead singer and songwriter. In leather pants and a black T-shirt, Miss Hynde danced about the stage with a feline grace that softened the tough-chick image of many of her songs.

Given the technical limitations of her voice, Miss Hynde's expressive range was exceptional, as she swung back and forth between a sullen, hovering vibrato and hard declamation with a throbbingly emotional edge. Her versions of ''Brass in Pocket'' and ''Private Life,'' both potential rock standards from the Pretenders' first album, were memorable. ''The Adultress,'' and ''Bad Boys Get Spanked,'' controversial songs from the second album, were sung with a delightful tongue-in-cheek sense of humor.

In contrast to most new wave bands, the Pretenders' music is strongly melodic, with the arrangements sculptured around song forms instead of being simply an accelerated repetition of one or two ideas. Miss Hynde's stylistic savvy is matched by the rest of the band, especially by Martin Chambers's versatile drumming, which encompasses Motown as well as the more martial new-wave beats. On Saturday, the Pretenders displayed a dynamic control, rhythmic precision and textural subtlety that few other rock bands could match.
