Luxury  SAUDI ARABIA  Tours

Our luxury Saudi Arabia tours lift the veil on a country that is arguably the greatest travel destination of them all in the Middle East. Until recently, this beacon of remote tourism and treasure trove of adventure and culture, was a secret known only to Saudis, pilgrims and oilmen. For non-Muslims, the two thousand year-old Nabataean tombs at Madain Saleh (the 2nd Petra) are undoubtedly the brightest star in Saudi Arabia’s tourism crown, but as you delve further, it will soon become apparent that this is just the tip of the palm tree. From the misty mountains of Asir, to the breath-taking deserts of Al Ula and the enormous oasis of Al Ahsa; the Kingdom’s landscapes are strikingly diverse. Saudi Arabia’s culture and architecture is as varied as the scenery: troglodytic dwellings on Shada mountain contrast sharply with the towering coral stone houses of Jeddah, and the gleaming skyscrapers of Riyadh. While following the old caravan routes you’ll see some of the world’s best rock art; learn about the civilisations that controlled the ancient incense trade; and admire exquisite mudbrick architecture. Glimpsing traditional Saudi lifestyles in souqs and street markets will also fascinate. Fans of T.E Lawrence will not want to pass up an opportunity to journey along the Hijaz Railway, and students of the Bible will relish the opportunity to follow Moses through the Land of Midian. Saudi Arabia is a destination that almost defines adventure and is where you can cross belts of blood red sands; climb volcanoes; and island hop through pristine sub-tropical atolls. The possibilities for Saudi Arabia travel are almost endless. On our tailor-made Saudi Arabia tours, you’ll be able to see Saudi Arabia through Saudi eyes and become a pioneer of Saudi tourism.

ROMANTIC LUXURY STAY IN SAUDI ARABIA: 6 DAYS in JEDDAH, RIYAD AND AL’ULA

When one thinks of Saudi Arabia you get images of rolling dunes, endless deserts and beautiful Arabian architecture. The Kingdom boosts a few of the world’s finest hotels, all carefully designed to the smallest detail. It is the perfect place for a romantic getaway with your partner to what is most likely the most classy, stylish and luxurious destination in the Middle East. We have carefully selected three hotels with above entry-level rooms for maximum comfort and our programme includes traditional local meals at quality restaurants. During your stay you will be accompanied by a professional, licensed English speaking guide who will make sure you will get not only a great tour, but nothing but the best service as well. We will await you at the airport in our comfortable SUV (LandCruiser or similar) which will be available to you throughout the whole stay. Our guide will also assist you at the restaurants and hotel and we’ll be at your side until the check-in at the airport on the day of departure.

We offer this tour at 7.995 USD per person throughout the whole year, offering maximum service and comfort. Rooms can be upgraded to suites and the Shaden Resort can also be booked, but this should be well in advance as currently it’s mostly fully booked since its opening.

Day 1: Arrival in Jeddah

Welcome to the Kingdom of Saudi-Arabia. Our guide will be waiting for you at the airport to welcome and assist you. You will then be escorted to your hotel in our brand new Toyota LandCruiser (or similar model) where you will be shown your room at the Ritz-Carlton Hotel.

The hotel maintains elements of its palatial roots, welcoming hotel guests with a magnificent fountain, majestic arches and traditional Saudi-Arabian hospitality. Set along Al Hamra corniche and overlooking the Red Sea, the five-star hotel is a destination for international business travelers, newlyweds, pilgrims and families and couples seeking a weekend escape. The hotel offers excellent dining and at the dessert-focused Karamel Lounge you can have an excellent afternoon tea. There is a spa and fitness available as well. After you’re refreshed, you will then be taken to the restaurant where you’ll get a little bit more explanation from our guide and who will also briefly go over the itinerary for the coming days. Afterwards you’ll have a free evening.

Day 2: Jeddah City Tour Today we tour the ancient winding alleys and soaring wood-decked ornate edifices and markets of Jeddah Al Balad, the old city, and learn about the history of the red sea port that hosts and hails millions of Muslim pilgrims through time on their road to Mecca, along corridors of immortal commerce and cultural interchange.

Kick-off your Jeddah tour with a visit to the stunning coral and wood-made old Ottoman houses in the city. One of the most eye-catching and historically-important ones is the Nasif House which was built in the 1850s by the well-known Nasif family. Located in the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Al Balad, this beautiful mansion is now a cultural mansion open for everyone. The complex has been carefully renovated, respecting the historical architectural wonders and offers a unique chance to get to know more of this rich local history.

We’ll explore the state-of-the-art Jeddah Corniche, a major attraction that acts as an open-air museum with modern sculpture displays and a hangout place for the locals. We’ll also stop by the Al Tayebat Museum, where we will learn more about the formation of Saudi Arabia, the history of Islam and especially Jeddah’s history, going back to pre-Islam history. We’ll also have a visit to the Al Rahma Floating Mosque which is also known as the White Mosque because of its astonishing white marble walls. The reflection of the white walls in the water, creates the illusion that it’s floating, especially when lit up at night.

We will make sure that you will also have the chance to visit one or more art galleries today and will seek out the best place in time to have an authentic local lunch, followed by tea. After your tour you will be brought back to your hotel where you can have a moment to relax and refresh and when you’re ready we’ll bring you to the restaurant where you can have dinner and enjoy a free evening.

Day 3: AlUla

After breakfast you will be brought to the airport for your flight to AlUla. At the moment the direct flight is at 10.50 AM. Once we arrive, we will then go for lunch in AlUla, followed by a short tour of the city and a visit to the fruit markets. Today you’ll be staying at Sahary Resort, where you can also enjoy a local dinner. This charming camp has great mountain views and is also ideal for stargazing. It is possible to upgrade this stay to Shaden Resort if desired and if there is availability.

AlUla is a city in the Medina region and is located on the incense route and was the capital of the ancient Lihyanites. The governorate contains the first UNESCO World Heritage Site in the Kingdom, called Hegra, which is north of the city and built more than 2.000 years ago by the Nabataeans. AlUla, the ancient walled city, is packed with mud-brick and stone houses. The Oasis of AlUla has made the region a cultural crossroads and we can find flavourful fruits, aromatic spices and oils. It has always been the perfect spot for pilgrims and travellers to rest. At the fruit farms we can find dates, figs, olives and citrus. It’s also the perfect place to buy premium moringa oil, extracted from the seeds, known for its qualities in cosmetics and perfumes.

Day 4: Exploring of AlUlA

Today we will visit Hegra, where we can find over 1100 well preserved tombs in the desert and we’ll learn more about the ancient cultures of Alula. We’ll also have a look at the ancient wells and water channels, as well as the remnants of the old walls, gates and towers

We’ll also explore the city of Dadan, which was built from stone in the 7th Century BC and the Jabal Hikmah Mountain. Dadan was a caravan way station for travellers and those who wished could leave their inscriptions in the rocks of the mountain, leading to hundreds of inscriptions in different languages, which have been of enormous value for researchers and historians.

No visit to the AlUla region is complete with a stop at the Elephant Rock, where we will have a stop to rest and have a drink and enjoy the beauty of this unique formation in the golden sands of the desert before we go to prepare ourselves for dinner.

Day 5: Riyadh

Today we’ll take the plane to the city of Riyadh. Depending on the day, this could be morning, afternoon or late evening. You’ll be brought to the Hyatt Regency Riyadh Olaya in downtown Riyadh, steps from the business and financial district and all that makes the city a business destination. With walking access to the Olaya Towers, you can also explore King Abdullah Financial District and enjoy the fashionable shopping at Riyadh’s most luxurious mall, Centria, and the city’s most vibrant scene at Tahlia Street, within walking distance of the  hotel.

We’ll make sure you’ll have an excellent dinner tonight in Riyadh. During our stay we will discover the customs and traditions of Riyadh, one of the wealthiest cities in the world on this tour of the central city highlights. From afar, the bustling city is a picture of modern skyscrapers rising above an otherwise barren desert. Up close, you’ll see that historic and well-maintained establishments blend beautifully with the city’s state-of-the-art contemporary buildings. Depending on the time of arrival and the time of departure of the plane the next day, we’ll try to visit as much as we comfortably can, such as the National Museum and Diriyah. If there is still time we can visit Al Masmak Fortress, a 150-year old clay and the mud-brick garrison turned museum in the heart of Riyadh. The Imam Turki Bin Abdullah Grand Mosque, an active place of worship, Qasr Al Hukm, Saudi Arabia’s traditional seat of the government, and the captivating green and white Clock Tower in the shape of an Egyptian needle. We can also stop by Dukhanah and the Athomairy Gates before strolling around Deira Souk, one of the main souks in the city where you can find carpets, gold, souvenirs, and more. If you want we can also free up some time to visit one of the excellent art galleries the city has to offer.

Day 6: Departure

Depending on the time of departure, we’ll try to visit a few more sites in the city if you wish as described in the previous page. We’ll make sure that you’ll be in time for your flight and that your PCR-test has also been arranged for today. We’ll escort you to the airport in our comfortable SUV, making sure you have everything you need on your drive and assist you at the airport to make sure you’ll have a safe flight.

As the Saudi Arabian Government is keen to preserve the health and safety of citizens and residents within its soil from the risk of the spread of novel coronavirus; The Saudi Data and Artificial Intelligence Authority (SDAIA) developed Tawakkalna App in order to support government efforts aimed at countering Covid-19.

Tawakkalna App was developed to facilitate the issuance of movement permits electronically during the curfew period for government and private sector employees, as well as individuals, in cooperation with the Ministry of Health and all relevant authorities during the curfew, thus helping to reduce the spread of the pandemic in the Kingdom.

Tawakkalna helps individuals, security, health and private entities, that are exempted from the curfew, to automatize all transactions between relevant parties in order to mitigate the health, economic and social impacts that may result from the implementation of policies taken to eliminate the spread of Covid-19.

Now, as we cautiously return to normal life, Tawakkalna is helping in this phase by new services such as showing Users’ health conditions and other services.

As a part of promoting social responsibility, Tawakkalna has provided many services regarding raising concern if there are violations, as well as providing the ability to notify the Ministry of Health in the event of a suspected case.

Best time to visit.

The best time to visit Saudi Arabia is during the winter (from November to February) when temperatures are around 22°C to 28°C and it’s comfortable enough to spend long periods of time outside. Saudi Arabia’s climate is classified as arid desert, so this means extremely hot summers (it’s not advisable to travel during this time).

Culture and customs

Saudi Arabia is a highly conservative country when it comes to social rules and there is an expectation for men and women to dress modestly like in the surrounding Middle Eastern countries. Saudi Arabia in general is influenced by Arab and Islamic culture with a core focus on faith, traditional roles and a family-orientated mindset.

Music and dance are a feature of everyday life, with traditional instruments played and dances performed at celebrations and cultural holiday festivities. Along with the thriving arts scene in Saudi Arabia, sport is huge throughout the kingdom with football (soccer) being the most popular.

History and government

Saudi Arabia shares a lot of its early history with much of the Arabian Peninsula, experiencing the rise of Islam in the 7 th century and the establishment of Muslim states in the 15 th century. However, due to its remote location and poverty, the country remained somewhat isolated from the general military and political trends from the 16th century onwards.

Fast forward to the 18 th century when the Saud dynasty (house of rulers in the 18 th and 19 th centuries) came into power, conquering much of Arabia until their defeat at the hands of the Ottoman Sultan and the Viceroy of Egypt in 1818. A second Saudi state was created by members of the Saud dynasty in 1824 but civil wars eventually ensued after succession disputes and the state fell out of Saudi hands until 1902. The kingdom of Saudi Arabia was royally decreed in 1932 and is still ruled by the monarchy, with a judicial system that's based on Islamic law (Shari'ah).

Eating and drinking

Saudi Arabian cuisine draws influences from surrounding Persian Gulf countries, but religion plays a role in culinary practices too. For instance, as per Islam, Muslims don’t eat pork or drink alcohol and other meats like lamb, beef and chicken has to be prepared in a specific way (halal).

But there are plenty of traditional meat dishes that locals love and that travellers to the country must try. Kebabs are big in Saudi Arabia and so is shwarma, both made with meat (such as chicken or lamb) that’s been roasted on a spit and served, either by itself or in pita bread as a sandwich.

Saudi Arabians also eat a lot of seafood, particularly fish and shrimp, so you’ll likely see dishes like machbous (rice with seafood) on most restaurant menus. Also be prepared to eat flat bread with every meal, followed by a selection of fruit (usually dates, watermelon and grapes) as dessert.

To wash it all down, locals love to drink coffee in the traditional Turkish way.

Geography and environment

Saudi Arabia is situated in Western Asia, bordering the Red Sea on the west, Yemen and Oman on the south, the United Arab Emirates and the Persian Gulf on the east and Iraq and Jordon on the north.

Its terrain is largely uninhabited sandy desert with frequent sand and dust storms. Saudi Arabia is rich in natural resources including petroleum, natural gas, iron ore, gold and cooper, and due to the production of these materials, the country experiences a range of environmental issues such as ground, water and air pollution, as well as extreme fossil fuel usage, deforestation and desertification.

If it’s shopping you’re after, you can’t go past two of Saudi Arabia’s biggest cities: Riyadh and Jeddah. Both cities have upscale shopping centres and department stores you can easily get lost in, as well as local markets full of traditional ingredients and souvenirs.

Popular shopping locations in Riyadh for both luxury lovers and families:

  • Centria Mall
  • Kingdom Centre
  • Al Nakheel Mall
  • Granada Mall
  • Souq Makkah

Popular shopping locations in Jeddah for both bargain hunters and electronic fiends:

  • Mall of Arabia
  • Read Sea Mall
  • Jeddah International Shopping Center
  • Al Balad district
  • Gabel Street Souq

Saudi Arabia travel FAQs

Do i need a covid-19 vaccine to join an intrepid trip.

Trips from 1 January 2023 onwards

From 1 January 2023, Intrepid will no longer require travellers to provide proof of vaccination against COVID-19 (excluding all Polar trips and select adventure cruises).

However, we continue to strongly recommend that all Intrepid travellers and leaders get vaccinated to protect themselves and others.

Specific proof of testing or vaccination may still be required by your destination or airline. Please ensure you check travel and entry requirements carefully.

Why is Intrepid launching a trip to Saudi Arabia now?

Saudi Arabia opened its doors to international tourism in 2019 and we know that many of our travellers are curious about visiting there. Our aim was to create a trip that would offer our customers unique and authentic experiences that have a positive impact on local communities, particularly women.

With their emphasis on local interaction and cultural insights, we felt Women’s Expeditions was our ideal first product in Saudi. We carried out firsthand research on the ground, including speaking to local people from all walks of life. As with all Women’s Expeditions, the trip creates opportunities for local female leaders and guides while also supporting women-owned and operated businesses across our supply chain.

Do I need a visa to travel to Saudi Arabia?

As a general rule, travellers will need to obtain a visa before arrival in Saudi Arabia. However, there are a range of nationals that can apply for an eVisa online to make the process as easy as possible, so you don’t need to spend time at embassy and consulate appointments. The visa application process will require you to provide information about your trip, return travel plans and accommodation details and might prompt you for bank account information and employment contracts.

Is tipping customary in Saudi Arabia?

Tipping is common in service-oriented businesses such as restaurants, hotels, and taxis, but it is not routine; but rather a way to show appreciation for good service. It is also not required if a service charge is already included in the bill. Saudis usually tip expatriate service people and individual services in hotels despite the overall service charge. Taxis and ride-hailing services such as Uber and Careem usually have a built-in tip option, but you can also tip in cash if you prefer.

Tipping guides, drivers and other tourism services providers is also common and it's a way to show appreciation for their services. It's worth noting that tipping in Saudi Arabia is a cultural and personal decision, and it's always a good idea to follow the local customs and traditions, and to tip in line with your budget and satisfaction with the service received.

What’s the internet access like in Saudi Arabia?

Internet access is widely available in Saudi Arabia, and the country has a well-developed infrastructure for telecommunications. The country's internet penetration rate is quite high and most people have access to high-speed 4G and 5G internet.

The government of Saudi Arabia regulates the internet, and there are some restrictions on access to certain websites and online content, such as those related to political dissent, pornography, gambling, and other sensitive topics. Social media platforms, such as Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube, are widely used in the country, but they are also subject to government censorship. WhatsApp is commonly used for chat but cannot be used for calls and video calls.

Will my mobile phone work in Saudi Arabia?

Mobile phone networks are widely available in Saudi Arabia and getting a local SIM card for your phone is relatively easy. Upon arrival, you can purchase a SIM card at the airport or at any of the mobile phone stores located in most major cities and towns. The process is straightforward and you will need to provide a passport or a valid ID to register your SIM card.

Can I drink the tap water in Saudi Arabia?

The water supply in the major cities and towns is treated and is safe to drink in theory, but because of older pipe-systems even many locals refrain from doing so. In some rural areas or remote regions, the water may not be treated and may not be safe to drink. It's also worth noting that in some places, the water may have a high mineral content, which can affect its taste and may not be suitable for everyone.

What is ATM access like in Saudi Arabia?

The country has a well-developed banking system, and ATMs are widely available in most cities and towns. You can find ATMs in banks, airports, shopping centres, and other public places.

Most ATMs accept international cards such as Visa, Mastercard, American Express, etc. However, it's always good to check with your bank if your card will work in Saudi Arabia, and also to inform them of your travel plans. You should also note that ATM withdrawal limits may vary depending on the bank and the type of card you are using.

It's also common to find that some ATMs have a limit per transaction, while others have a daily limit, so you may have to withdraw money in multiple transactions.

Are all credit cards accepted in Saudi Arabia?

You can use credit or debit cards, or even international credit cards in most of the shops, restaurants and hotels in Saudi Arabia, however, it's always good to check with the specific establishment if they accept foreign cards.

It's also worth noting that Saudi Arabia was, until recently, a cash-based society, and it's always good to have some cash on hand, especially when travelling to rural or remote areas of the country where access to ATMs and other banking services may be limited.

What are the toilets like in Saudi Arabia?

Western style bathrooms are found all across the country with the same amenities and facilities you’d expect elsewhere.

Is Saudi Arabia safe for female travellers?

It’s generally considered safe for female travellers to visit Saudi Arabia, whether solo or as part of a group as, o verall, the rate of crime in Saudi Arabia is low.

As with any destination, there are a few do’s and don’t’s that all travellers should follow, such as adhering to local laws, dressing appropriately in places of worship and respecting cultural traditions. However, women should behave and dress in a similar way to locals and stick to well-populated areas, especially when venturing out at nighttime.

Saudi Arabia’s judicial system is based on Islamic law (Shari'ah) and this may be different from what travellers’ are accustomed to in their own countries. Travellers should check their own country’s travel advisory for details, before travelling.

It's against the law to have sexual relations or live together outside of marriage.

Are there any local laws I should be aware of?

Saudi Arabia welcomes tourists – as with all destinations, travellers to the country should check their own country’s travel advisory for details, before travelling.

Saudi Arabia’s judicial system is based on Islamic law (Shari'ah) and this may be different from what travellers’ are accustomed to in their own countries.

In general, when it comes to Saudi Arabia's laws and social rules:

  • It is illegal to preach or publicly practice a religion other than Islam.
  • Refrain from questioning religious values or public morals.
  • Don't criticise the country, its royal family or practicing religion in public (including on social media).
  • Dress modestly in public.
  • Alcohol is prohibited in Saudi Arabia.

Same-sex relationships are illegal. Saudi Arabia does not recognise or allow same-sex marriages and rights.

What should I wear in Saudi Arabia?

Travellers should be aware of the socially conservative rules when it comes to the dress code in Saudi Arabia. It is no longer a legal requirement for women to cover their hair and wear an abaya (long sleeved robe) in Saudi, but w omen should still dress modestly when out and about (especially when visiting places of worship), covering their shoulders, chest and knees, as well as wearing any loose-fitting dresses or pants.

Due to the hot climate in Saudi Arabia, pack lightweight clothing like cotton and linen, so you're not uncomfortable when you're exploring during the day.

Is Saudi Arabia LGBTQIA+ friendly?

Unfortunately, LGBTQIA+ rights aren’t recognised in Saudi Arabia and a high degree of caution should be undertaken when travelling. Homosexuality remains illegal and carries a heavy penalty such as imprisonment and deportation.

Additionally, being transgender is not recognised in Saudi Arabia. You will not be able to enter Saudi Arabia if your passport shows 'X' in the gender field. Transgender people could also face difficulties with dress code and access to medical care.

Do I need to purchase travel insurance before travelling?

Absolutely. All passengers travelling with Intrepid are required to purchase travel insurance before the start of their trip. Your travel insurance details will be recorded by your leader on the first day of the trip. Due to the varying nature, availability and cost of health care around the world, travel insurance is very much an essential and necessary part of every journey.

For more information on insurance, please go to: Travel Insurance

Day 2: Madain Saleh – Elephant Rock

Start your tour visiting the  Hegra , also known as  Madain Saleh  , or Al-Ḥijr is an archaeological site located in the area of AlUla within Al Madinah Region in the Hejaz, Saudi Arabia. A majority of the remains date from the Nabatean kingdom. The site constitutes the kingdom’s southernmost and largest settlement after Petra, its capital.

The Archaeological Site of Al-Hijr (Madain Saleh) is the first World Heritage property to be inscribed in Saudi Arabia. Formerly known as Hegra it is the largest conserved site of the civilization of the Nabataeans south of Petra in Jordan. It features well-preserved monumental tombs with decorated facades dating from the 1st century BC to the 1st century AD. The site also features some 50 inscriptions of the pre-Nabataean period and some cave drawings. Al-Hijr bears a unique testimony to Nabataean civilization. With its 111 monumental tombs, 94 of which are decorated, and water wells, the site is an outstanding example of the Nabataeans’ architectural accomplishment and hydraulic expertise.

Then we will move to the next visit  to Hijaz Railway Station (some times it’s closed for renovation without advance notice) AlUla has long been a place of journey, travel and exploration; Hijaz Railway station construction began in 1900, reaching Madinah in 1908 and opening in Damascus in 1913. As a result of World War I, the railway’s full 1,300 planned kilometres were never completed.

The site dates back to the Nabataean civilisation and is spectacular. Its is a Unesco World Heritage site the first in Saudi Arabia. its holds remain of Hijaz railway from Istanbul from Makkah- Madina that build by the Ottoman empire and destroyed in world war one.

Then enjoy  Elephant   Rock ,This spectacular rock formation resembles an elephant with its trunk touching the ground, is one of AlUla’s geomorphological wonders became one of AlUla iconic landmarks.

Elephant Rock, also known as Jabal AlFil, one of AlUla’s many geological marvels.

Overnight in AlUla.

Day 3: Jabal Ikmah & Dadan Tour

Start your tour visit  Jabal Ikmah , An open air library across AlUla’s Valley, lie thousands of inscriptions in Aramaic, Dadanitic, Thamudic, Minaic and Nabataean, features one of the oldest inscriptions of the Islamic era dating back to 24AH (644 CE).

Thousands of pre-Arabic inscriptions across numerous sites make AlUla an important location in studying the Arabic language. A mountain north of the AlUla Valley, AlAqra’a, features more than 450 early Arabic inscriptions. Naqsh Zuhayr, to the east, features one of the oldest inscriptions of the Islamic era — dating back to 24AH (644 CE). But no such site is more significant than Jabal Ikmah, home to the highest concentration of and most varied inscriptions in AlUla.

In a beautiful desert landscape warmed by the sun, the largest “open library” in Saudi Arabia sits tucked away in a remote canyon valley.

Dadan  was a caravan way station for many peoples, and one of the clues that AlUla was truly a crossroads of civilisations is Jabal Ikmah, which was visited by those wishing to leave their inscriptions and offerings en route through AlUla. Records kept here — in the form of hundreds of inscriptions and carvings lining the cliff faces and rocks — ensured that Jabal Ikmah would be remembered throughout the ages.

A visit to this magnificent site, with its inscriptions thought to date as far back as the 1st millennium BCE, is a glimpse into the past.

At the end Drive to at Al Ula Airport & end of the tour.

Gulf Business

The GCC’s luxury market continues to outperform global trends, reaching record highs in 2023, according to a new report by Chalhoub Group.

The region’s luxury market, valued at $12.5bn by year-end 2023, grew at double the rate of the global industry, solidifying the GCC’s position as a key player.

Fashion remains the top luxury segment in the GCC, valued at $5.2bn, followed closely by watches at $5.1bn.

The high-end fashion segment grew by 10 per cent in 2023, significantly exceeding the global average growth rate of 4 per cent.

This strong performance continued into Q1 2024, with growth of 7 per cent.

The beauty sector also saw significant growth across the GCC, with a 15 per cent year-on-year increase in 2023 and 10 per cent growth in Q1 2024.

UAE leads the way in luxury spend

The UAE emerged as the top market for prestige beauty, driven by domestic spending and a robust tourism sector. Makeup and skincare were the fastest-growing beauty categories, with skincare experiencing a rise of 30 per cent.

The UAE retained its position as the top luxury market within the GCC across all segments, benefiting from a vibrant tourism industry, an influx of high-net-worth individuals, and resilient local spending.

Jasmina Banda, chief strategy officer and SVP of Fashion JVs at Chalhoub Group , commented on the report’s findings: “The region’s luxury market is expected to maintain its impressive growth trajectory. This is fueled by strong economic fundamentals, a thriving tourism sector, and positive consumer behaviour, with 53 per cent of GCC residents expressing optimism about the state of the economy.”

The report also highlights GCC consumers’ positive outlook on their finances, with 93 per cent reporting financial well-being.

Sixty per cent of respondents in Saudi Arabia believe the economy is strengthening, with 70 per cent of affluent Saudi consumers reporting an improved economic climate in the past three months.

The report underscores the importance of personalised services for GCC luxury consumers. When making fashion purchases, two-thirds of consumers seek guidance from personal stylists (36 per cent) or in-store sales assistants (31 per cent).

Despite ongoing concerns about rising living costs, environmental factors, and the geopolitical climate, GCC consumers generally express positive emotions, with hopefulness (43 per cent), happiness (39 per cent), and confidence (34 per cent) being the most prevalent.

The Chalhoub Group report highlights the GCC’s growing significance in the global luxury market. With strong performance across various segments and countries, the region is well-positioned for continued growth and innovation in the years to come.

Saudi Tourism Chief Advisor Gloria Guevara Manzo Leaves Role

Josh Corder , Skift

June 26th, 2024 at 9:59 AM EDT

Manzo spent three years in Saudi Arabia, right as the conservative kingdom began to reinvent its image.

Josh Corder

Gloria Guevara Manzo, Saudi Arabia’s chief special advisor to the tourism minister, has announced she’s stepping down.

Manzo has worked in Saudi’s Ministry of Tourism since May 2021, reporting directly to minister Ahmed Al Khateeb as the Gulf capital undergoes a tourism transformation project. The kingdom is spending hundreds of billions on its fledging tourism sector, with the goal of 150 million visitors by the end of the decade.

“I am convinced of the potential of Saudi Arabia to become a top-five destination,” Manzo said Wednesday in a LinkedIn post announcing that her term had ended.

A lot has changed in Saudi since 2021 when Manzo joined:

  • International visitors have increased from 3.5 million to 27 million last year.
  • Saudi Arabia has been pushing for new source markets, such as China and India, which are now in the top five.
  • The country has committed to open 320,000 new hotel rooms before the end of the decade.
  • A new national carrier, Riyadh Air, has been formed, with flights set to start next year.
  • ‘Giga-projects’ for tourism such as The Red Sea and Diriyah Gate are now operational.

Manzo was the overseer of the Sustainable Tourism Global Center, a Saudi-government-led coalition calling on global tourism to move towards net zero.

Prior to her role with Saudi, Manzo spent four years as CEO and president of the World Travel and Tourism Council – the first woman to hold the position.

She also served as Mexico’s secretary of tourism from 2010 to 2012 and was a special advisor on government affairs at Harvard University’s Center for Health and the Global Environment at the School of Public Health.

Her successor in the ministry of tourism has not been named.
