New Skoda Octavia e-TEC 2021 review
The mild-hybrid skoda octavia e-tec offers a cheaper way to electrification.
4.5 out of 5
The Octavia e-TEC is a fine first effort at mild-hybrid propulsion from Skoda. It drives smoothly, while the ride, refinement and practicality make a strong supporting case to the impressive efficiency on offer given the price. In SE Tech trim the Octavia Estate e-TEC is a versatile and affordable choice for those looking to explore what electrification can offer.
If you’re dead against diesel and still find the price of a plug-in hybrid hard to swallow, then mild-hybrid tech can be a more affordable way into an impressively efficient model – and the Skoda Octavia 1.0 TSI e-TEC proves this fact resolutely.
The e-TEC tag highlights that the Octavia, tested here in Estate form, is powered by a 1.0-litre three-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine with a belt-driven starter-generator as part of the car’s 48-volt electrical system.
It charges a small 0.6kWh lithium-ion battery when slowing down or lifting off the throttle, allowing engine-off coasting, which it’s surprisingly keen to do. It can also provide a boost of torque (up to 50Nm) to help performance when pulling away.
You simply don’t notice it working though, such is the system’s impressive calibration. Given that this is Skoda ’s first mild-hybrid model, it’s a great effort. Total output is 108bhp and 200Nm of torque, enough for a 0-62mph time of 10.6 seconds. But that’s not important. It never feels quick, but it also never feels slow or particularly underpowered, despite the Estate’s weight.

Performance is adequate because the combustion engine’s torque is delivered low down, helped by the turbo’s variable-vane geometry, plus the small electric boost.
Refinement is excellent because the three-cylinder unit is so quiet under light loads when cruising that you rarely notice the engine cutting out. The needle on the digital rev counter falling to zero is the main hint.
Touch the throttle and the petrol engine fires back up quickly and smoothly (a benefit of the mild-hybrid technology and its starter-generator system), while the DSG dual-clutch gearbox handles changes with similar finesse, even if it is a little jerkier at low speed, losing some drivability compared with the best automatics.
The beauty of this set-up is claimed efficiency of 54.3mpg and CO2 emissions as low as 118g/km, yet in fleet-focused SE Technology trim the newcomer costs from just £24,505 – that’s £7,680 less than an Octavia Estate iV plug-in hybrid in the same specification.
You get the same level of equipment, but due to the need to package the iV’s bigger battery there’s 150 litres more room in the e-TEC’s boot (its battery is located under the front passenger seat), at a total of 640 litres. This has long been an Octavia Estate strong point, and it’s no different here, with a simply cavernous load bay that opens out to 1,700 litres, while a pair of levers in the boot means you can flip the seat backs down at the touch of a button.
SE Technology is a solid blend of kit and cost, with LED headlights, Skoda’s Front Assist system with collision warning and autonomous braking, a 10-inch touchscreen infotainment set-up with sat-nav, Android Auto and wireless Apple CarPlay , a 10.25-inch digital dash panel, all-round parking sensors, dual-zone climate control, and 16-inch alloy wheels all fitted as standard.
Those rims help deliver a nice level of comfort and the Estate rides with composure but plenty of compliance. Combined with the quiet powertrain, it’s a very refined car.
It’s a bit bland and boring inside, despite the new fourth-generation Octavia’s smarter cabin design, while the lack of personality isn’t helped by our car’s metallic grey paint, but then this is a pragmatic choice and it fulfils that brief completely.
Remember that while it’s more affordable, despite the ‘hybrid’ tag associated with the e-TEC name, as a mild-hybrid it can’t run solely on electric power; its battery isn’t big enough for that and the belt starter-generator isn’t strong enough to support it. It means that if you’re after a heavily electrified model to lower your running costs (especially if you mostly travel short distances that could be covered on electricity alone) then the Octavia iV will be a better choice, with fuel efficiency claims of up to 282.5mpg and CO2 emissions as low as 23g/km.
As with any PHEV, take these figures with a pinch of salt, because if you don’t plug in at every opportunity when the battery is depleted, you’ll be carrying around that extra weight but not reaping the benefit.
If as a result your circumstances still don’t work with a plug-in though, this mild-hybrid model is yet another great Skoda.

Skoda Octavia Combi 1.5 TSI e-TEC Style Review : Load Runner
Singapore - From moving Christmas trees to carrying what could seem like a family tree, the Skoda Octavia has found its way into our hearts at TopGear. The Octavia seems to be able to carry it all, boasting cargo stowage which could rival a class-equivalent SUV, or even an estate car.
Its liftback boot lid makes loading and unloading less of a chore; and then there is that typical trait of Skoda, where there you can expect a fair scatter of practical storage features.
So when Skoda brought us the estate version, the Combi alongside the sedan/liftback, we knew we had to have a go in it, and were not disappointed. There is also a high performance version of the Octavia, and if you are curious, click on this blue stuff . And yeah, while we are at it, we are also hoping for a Combi version of the RS… nudge nudge Skoda Singapore .
The Octavia Combi takes all that is good in the sedan/fastback/liftback car, and adds even more rear-end storage, and in my opinion, a more attractive form.
But some of you might ask, why?… Why should you pick an estate over a sedan? Perhaps you have a bicycle habit you need to feed, or maybe, just maybe you need to go find justification later. If you are more of the latter, then you are probably just like me.
You actually do like the Estate body form… it's OK… go ahead and admit it!
Skoda Octavia Combi - inside
The Octavia’s interior is unpretentious and unapologetically built with cost sensitivities in-mind. This is not a bad thing at all, because what Skoda takes out from here and there, they make up for in the way of practicality. I personally like that Skoda has chosen to line the dashboard with fabric, a tasteful approach as opposed to the usual spread of soft-touch plastics we have become accustomed to.
There is a clever use of plastic mouldings here, like the door pockets which can hold large bottles, and there is also that self-draining umbrella holder hidden within the door, a signature of Skoda.
In the middle of the dash, a 10-inch ‘Bolero’ infotainment touchscreen takes its place, while just above the air-conditioning vents, there is a button array to make operating the infotainment system easier.
Skoda has chosen to go with a shift-by-wire system (similar to the ones found in the related Volkswagen Golf and Audi A3 ), where in the cabin, the gearshift lever is replaced with just a simple stub to select gears. This frees up some space, making it easier for you to access the wireless mobile charger under the air-conditioning vents.
For the driver, there is now a neat 10.25-inch Virtual Cockpit, where driving data can be customised, or even tidied up, displaying only essential information.
All seats (apart from the awkward middle rear one) have a pleasant curvature to support your back, and the base of those front seats are higher, providing rear passengers with crucial foot space.
With the rear seats folded, the Octavia Combi can contain up to 1700 litres of cargo, while on normal days, it already swallows 640 litres. There is an adjustable boot floor, in-case you are travelling with four-others and you still need to transport tall items. There is a ski hatch for long items, cargo hooks, an auto retracting cargo cover, Virtual Pedal boot door release, a pair of roof rails… just plenty of stuff from the car, which you would need to help you carry your stuff.
Skoda Octavia Combi - the drive
The 1.5 litre turbocharged four-cylinder powering the Octavia Combi is an evolution of the previous 1.4 litre. Like the related A3 and Golf, the Octavia’s engine produces 150hp and 250Nm, and gets additional help from a mild-hybrid system. Combined with a quick-shifting 7-speed DSG, Skoda says that the Octavia Combi is capable of doing 20.8km/l combined.
LIARS! I got 21km/l!
To achieve this claimed efficiency, the 1.5 litre engine comes with its own bag of tricks. There is cylinder deactivation, which turns off cylinders 2 and 3 when cruising, there is the ability to coast, with the engine fully shut-off, and the previously-mentioned mild-hybrid system kicks in when required, to give an additional boost. Fuel-saving tech aside, the engine delivers effortlessly, even under heavier loads.
There is some inherent mild low speed judder coming from the DSG, but other than that, the Octavia provides its occupants a smooth and pleasant ride.
The suspension, which is tuned for comfort, soaks up most of what our local roads would want to throw at it. The improvements here translate to the new Octavia not wallowing as much as before, and it is also more predictable around corners.
There is however, one major gripe. I feel that there is not enough insulation around the firewall, meaning that more road noise intrudes into the cabin that it should.
If you are looking for a well-equipped compact car, with the ability to haul plenty, including the family pet, the Octavia Combi simply does a mighty fine job, and it looks šmart doing it too.
It is also well equipped, having 7 airbags and Adaptive Cruise Control, together with Front Assist with City Emergency Brake. The rear sensors and rear camera provide additional safety, with Side Assist with Rear Traffic Alert.

New Skoda Octavia Estate 1.5 TSI 150 e-TEC Sportline 5dr DSG Review
Category: Estate car

Get the best price with What Car?
The Skoda Octavia Estate offers a vast boot considering its size and generous space for occupants but it's far more than just a big box on wheels. The relatively plush interior, generally cosseting ride and frugal engines make it a fantastic car for covering big distances in, especially if you stick to our favourite 1.5 TSI 150 engine and SE L trim.
This brings a sportier look to the Octavia, adding 18in alloy wheels, a small black rear spoiler, sports front seats and aluminium pedals.
This is the most powerful petrol engine available (except for the vRS version). Power increases to 148bhp while torque rises to 184lb ft. The 0-62mph time is 8.6sec while the top speed is 140mph.

e-TEC models add mild hybrid technology to OCTAVIA range
Milton Keynes, 17 September 2020 - The new unit, which is equipped with a seven speed DSG gearbox as standard is the brand’s first mHEV or mild hybrid powertrain and is available in two trim variants from £23,005 OTR.
At the heart of the e-TEC powertrain is a powerful 48-volt Li-ion battery and a combined belt-driven starter-alternator. The 48-volt system means that the new OCTAVIA can coast with the engine completely switched off for extended periods, with the electric motor maintaining power to essential systems like the car’s power steering. The mild hybrid system can also recover energy during braking and store it in the battery and support the combustion engine by providing it with an electric boost. A direct current converter (DC-DC) converts the voltage from the 48-volt battery to the 12 volts required for the vehicle’s electrical system.
The e-TEC’s hybrid technology further enhances the efficiency of the OCTAVIA’s 1.0 TSI engine. This 110PS three-cylinder unit is already packed with innovation and features a lightweight aluminium crankcase and pistons. The connecting rods are so well balanced that the engine doesn’t require a balancing shaft as some three-cylinder engines do. It also features a turbocharger with variable vane geometry and operates using the fuel-efficient Miller cycle, in which the maximum torque is available 35 per cent earlier than in conventional processes. Coated cylinder liners increase the efficiency of both engines, while an injection pressure of up to 350 bar ensures lower hydraulic losses and a reduced fuel delivery rate. This saves on weight and helps to improve efficiency.
Customers can specify the new 1.0 TSI e-TEC engine on two trim levels: SE First Edition and the fleet-focussed SE Technology. Available in both hatch and estate forms, prices range from £23,005 OTR for the First Edition Hatch up to £24,235 OTR for the SE Technology Estate variant.
Highlighting ŠKODA’s commitment to improving efficiency and reducing running costs for drivers, the new e-TEC model will be joined at a later date by an iV plug-in hybrid (PHEV) variant, which will also be available in sporty vRS iV form.
OCTAVIA e-TEC models will be open to order from 22 September.

Octavia nabízí velice pohodlnou jízdu díky dobře vyladěnému odpružení a přesnému řízení.

A právě v tom tkví hlavní přednost oproti základu v podobě motoru 1.0 TSI e-Tec.
Technické parametry Škoda Octavia 1.5 TSI e-Tec
Díky maximální nejvyšší výbavě to v kabině vozu vypadalo opravdu hezky a člověk by až neřekl, že sedí „pouze“ v Octavii. Zatímco příplatkové sedačky s výrazným bočním vedením dokázaly moje tělo v naprostém pohodlí udržet i několik stovek kilometrů naráz, masážní funkce zde rozhodně nepatří ke špičce a její účinnost je minimální.
Asi pak nemá smysl rozebírat prostor v kabině, který je díky karoserii kombi královský a i 190 cm vysoké postavy nebudou mít problém usednout dozadu. K tomu si přidejte obří kufr, síťový program a rázem můžete Octavii čtvrté generace vyčíst snad jen občas zmatkující palubní systém.

I ordered the new Skoda Octavia G-Tec 2019 (Style with some extras) as soon as available in March 2019. The indicative delivery time was September 2019. This was really disappointing. Surprisingly I received mid May the message that my car is available. I took over beginning of June and can already now confirm: an excellent car for everyday use. Motorway consumption is about 3.5 kg/100 km; mixed use consumption is 4.0 kg/100km. For Germany with the current electricity mix CNG cars are clearly preferred over e-mobility. I wonder why CNG is not better promoted by automotive Industry as an immediate improvement of CO2, NOx and particle Emission. Another argument is clearly the use of bio-methane where available.

e-TEC models add mild hybrid technology to OCTAVIA range
The 1.5-litre mild-hybrid engine delivers 148bhp and 250Nm of torque in a smooth and refined manner. The mild-hybrid integration is also excellent - the 48V system allows for very quiet engine start up, and the engine start/stop is seamless and almost undetectable. As far as drive quality goes, comfort is certainly the Octavia's strong suit.

Ta patří k pomyslnému vrcholu, nabízí motor 1.5 TSI s výkonem 150 koní, automatickou převodovku se sedmi stupni a hlavně hladší jízdní projev. V tomto testu se ...

In CNG mode, CO2 emissions are reduced even further, by around 25 per cent compared to petrol, with considerably lower ...
