Review titled eConsultation is never available

★★★

Rated 3 stars out of 5

by Anonymous - Posted on 29 March 2023

This is the first GP practice that never seems to have availability to write an eConsultation past 8:30am. It apparently opens at 8am and then by the time it hits 8:30am it switches off and then you have to try again the next day. Usually GP practices would keep this open at least for the morning and manage expectations by saying a GP will come back to them within 2 days. It's not ideal when you have a busy schedule to always be waiting at 8am for a chance to make it through to write one. This could definitely be managed better.

Review titled Great service and great staff

by Cheryl - Posted on 21 February 2023

I’ve had to visit a few times in the last few weeks and would like to prise the staff. It makes such a difference to be greeted with a smile and not feel like an inconvenience and also to feel like I’m treated as and dealing with a human! In terms of timeframes, all my follow ups have been before the deadline given and everything well explained. I’m really impressed with the service I’ve experienced recently - thank you!

Review titled Fantastic service great practice

by Cheryl - Posted on 24 January 2023

I have needed to use Voyager Family Health twice in the last few weeks for my elderly Mum. The doctor who I spoke to over the phone was kind, caring and compassionate and despite obviously being very busy took time to discuss my Mum and at no point did I feel was rushing me to get to the next patient. The paramedic practitioner who visited was amazing. Kind, caring and brilliant dealing with Mum. Both are a real credit to the practice and an asset to the NHS. I cannot praise highly enough, very well done and many thanks.

Review titled Mental Health Support

Surgery were straight onto my request for support and made me an appointment with their mental health specialist. She genuinely is the best person to talk to and an exceptional listener - just when things are too much. It feels like we are working together but she says it's all coming from me. I feel in a much better place and it's absolutely down to her.

After Months of Glitches and Gradual Fixes, Voyager 1 Is Fully Operational Once Again

Currently 15 billion miles away from Earth, one of NASA’s longest-tenured spacecraft is back from the brink after a technical failure last year put its future in question

Christian Thorsberg

Christian Thorsberg

Daily Correspondent

An artist's rendering of the Voyager 1 spacecraft, which was launched in 1977.

After a technical malfunction late last year rendered all of its subsequent readings as useless , NASA’s Voyager 1 spacecraft—which has spent nearly a half-century in space—has been brought back online and is once again fully functioning.

“The spacecraft has resumed gathering information about interstellar space,” NASA said in a press release .

Launched in 1977 and drifting some 15 billion miles away from Earth, on the outer reaches of our solar system, the satellite is both one of the world’s oldest-tenured crafts and currently the most distant—making its recovery from what was once presumed a dismal prognosis nothing short of miraculous.

Last November, the satellite began transmitting unintelligible strings of data, as opposed to the binary code it is supposed to send, back to NASA’s scientists. Initial efforts to diagnose and fix the problem were tedious. New commands took nearly a full day, 22.5 hours, to reach Voyager 1, and responses took an equal amount of time.

A photo of Jupiter's Great Red Spot, taken by Voyager 1 on March 1, 1979. For decades, the spacecraft has provided NASA with imagery and data about our solar system's gas giants, moons, particles, and waves.

“Finding solutions to challenges the probes encounter often entails consulting original, decades-old documents written by engineers who didn’t anticipate the issues that are arising today,” Miles Hatfield wrote in a December NASA press release . “As a result, it takes time for the team to understand how a new command will affect the spacecraft’s operations in order to avoid unintended consequences.”

Waiting 45 hours between individual troubleshooting efforts was tedious. But incremental gains were made, and after five months of steady trial and error, the team found that Voyager 1’s problem lay in its flight data subsystem (FDS), which packages earthbound data. They pinpointed one faulty chip in particular, and were able to engineer a work-around.

The Golden Record is prepared for installation on Voyager 1, in this image from 1977.

In April, they enjoyed a breakthrough: a health and status report that indicated the satellite was still capable of lucid communication.

“Today was a great day for Voyager 1,” Linda Spilker, a Voyager project scientist at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), said in a statement from that weekend, CNN’s Ashley Strickland reported. “We’re back in communication with the spacecraft. And we look forward to getting science data back.”

The team didn’t need to wait long. In late May, two of the spacecraft’s four scientific instruments began sending usable scientific data once again: the “bunny-eared” plasma wave subsystem , which protrudes 30 feet off the spacecraft and measures electron density, and the magnetometer instrument , which measures and analyzes the magnetic fields of Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune.

The iconic "pale blue dot" image, captured in 1990 by Voyager 1 and famously remarked upon by astronomer Carl Sagan.

“NASA has previously estimated that the nuclear-powered generators on Voyager 1 and Voyager 2 were likely to die around 2025,” the New York Times’    Orlando Mayorquín reports.

But, if they can survive until 2027, both spacecraft will reach their 50th anniversary.

Voyagers 1 and 2 are NASA’s only spacecraft to have explored outside of the sun’s heliosphere. Over the decades, they have explored the solar system’s gas giant planets and 48 moons . They also carry the Voyager Golden Records , intended to share sounds and images of Earth with alien civilizations.

“That's here. That's home. That's us. On it everyone you love, everyone you know, everyone you ever heard of, every human being who ever was, lived out their lives,” astronomer Carl Sagan famously said in 1990 on the day Voyager 1 took the iconic “pale blue dot” image of Earth at a distance of 3.7 billion miles from the sun.

Voyager 1 is back online! NASA's most distant spacecraft returns data from all 4 instruments

All right, everyone — we can all breathe a sigh of relief. NASA's Voyager 1 spacecraft is fully operational once more, with all four science instruments returning usable data to Earth.

The problems began in November 2023, when Voyager 1 lost its ability to "speak" with us. More specifically, it started sending to Earth unintelligible data instead of its normal 0s and 1s of binary code. Of course, Voyager 1 is 46 years old — ancient for a spacecraft — so it wasn't entirely a surprise that its health might be waning. And that's not to mention that it's in entirely uncharted interstellar territory, some 15 billion miles (24 billion kilometers) from Earth.

Voyager 1's dogged team was determined to not only figure out what went wrong, but also to fix the problem. And they've succeeded! Controllers identified where the issue was located: the flight data subsystem (FDS), used to "package" data to be sent to Earth. Further sleuthing revealed the exact chip causing the problem, which allowed them to find a workaround. After the team relocated the code to a new location in the FDS, Voyager 1 finally sent back intelligible data on April 20, 2024 — but only from two of its four science instruments. Now, just two months later, Voyager 1's remaining two science instruments are back up and running, communicating effectively with mission control on Earth.

Even if Voyager 1 had gone dark for good, however, the mission would still have been a wild success. After it launched in 1977, its primary mission was to study Jupiter and Saturn — that was accomplished by 1980. (Its twin spacecraft, Voyager 2 , went on to study Uranus and Neptune .) But Voyager 1 is on an unstoppable path. Continuing its journey away from Earth, the spacecraft entered interstellar space in 2012, returning crucial data about this mysterious realm.

Now that Voyager 1 is back online, the team will continue to "touch up" the spacecraft to get it back in top form, including resynchronizing its timekeeping software to execute commands at the right time , as well as performing maintenance on the digital tape recorder that measures plasma waves. And hopefully, Voyager 1 will have a long, happy life ahead.

Voyager therapeutics announces appointment of nathan jorgensen as chief financial officer.

LEXINGTON, Mass., June 13, 2024 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Voyager Therapeutics, Inc. (Nasdaq: VYGR), a biotechnology company dedicated to advancing neurogenetic medicines, today announced the appointment of Nathan Jorgensen, Ph.D., MBA, as Chief Financial Officer (CFO), effective July 8, 2024. Jorgensen brings to Voyager a breadth of experience spanning investment banking, public and private healthcare investing, sell-side research, and operational roles in biotech, as well as expertise in neuroscience. He most recently served as Chief Financial Officer for Vor Biopharma Inc.

“Voyager has built a strong financial position from which to advance our clinical-stage and emerging pipeline of neurotherapeutics based on genetically-validated targets,” said Alfred W. Sandrock, Jr., M.D., Ph.D., Chief Executive Officer of Voyager. “Nathan’s highly differentiated background integrates operational and strategic leadership, a deep understanding of value creation in the life sciences, and expertise in neuroscience, which will be critical as we advance additional programs into the clinic and build a multi-modality neurotherapeutics company.”

As CFO at Vor Bio, Jorgensen oversaw finance, communications, facilities, GMP, and IT and raised over $400 million in public and private financings. Prior to this, he managed global public and private healthcare investing, including in early-stage biotech companies, for the Qatar Investment Authority, the sovereign wealth fund of the State of Qatar. Previously, Jorgensen led pharma and biotech investing efforts on the all-cap equity healthcare team at Calamos Investments LLC, a diversified global investment firm. Before joining Calamos, he covered mid- and large-cap biotech companies as an equity research analyst at Stifel, Nicolaus & Company, Incorporated. Prior to entering the financial sector, Jorgensen investigated the pathobiology of Parkinson’s disease as a postdoctoral scientist at the Columbia University Irving Medical Center. He received his MBA from the Cornell SC Johnson College of Business, his Ph.D. in neuroscience from the University of Minnesota, and his B.A. from St. John’s University.

“Voyager is advancing a suite of transformative neurogenetic medicines, with multiple opportunities to create value for patients and for shareholders,” said Jorgensen. “I am excited about the possibilities offered by Voyager’s differentiated platform, along with its unparalleled team in the field of neuroscience. The pipeline is poised to tackle the delivery hurdles that have held back progress in neurology, and I look forward to applying my strategic financial expertise to enable the team to execute and deliver on the promise of its tremendous science.”
