tokyo world tour keyboard

The  Akko World Tour series  takes some famous cities in the world as the source of design inspiration, and use the latest dye-sublimation technology to vividly render their local cultural characteristics. The World Tour series is dedicated to delivering products that are beyond simple typing instrument, and could also serve as the medium of cultural communication and interaction. This forms the unique design concept of Akko on gaming peripherals.

Mt.Fuji and Cherry Blossom – The Iconic Image of Tokyo

Tokyo is viewed more as the symbol of modern Japanese culture than a city. Speaking of Tokyo, in addition to popular icons such as Tokyo Tower and Sky Tree, and Holy Land, the most well-known attraction is Mount Fuji. Akko took inspiration from the scenic spring view of Mt.Fuji and cherry blossoms and designed this World Tour-Tokyo keyboard.

This 87-key (TKL size) keyboard belongs to the standard R1 version of Akko World Tour Tokyo series. It does not have the Japanese script and certain novelty keys like the R2 version. Apart from that, the R1 version is a great choice for users who do not need Japanese hiragana but enjoy Tokyo culture.

The keyboard is one of the most important PC accessories you can purchase. It's what allows you to type up thousands of words and control games alongside a mouse. There is a wide range of options available with differing sizes, switches, and other features. The modding scene for customizing mechanical keyboards is really taking off, and companies like Akko are taking note.

The Chinese brand has been around since 2016 and has already established itself as a reliable choice for those seeking a premium mechanical keyboard. From custom-designed switches to perfecting PBT dye-sublimation and double shot keycaps, Akko wants to lead the charge as more people get into customizing their keyboards.

This is where the Akko World Tour Tokyo R2 (3068B) comes into play. It's the first Akko keyboard I've had the pleasure of using, so read on to learn my thoughts on this stunning keyboard and whether it deserves a spot in our best keyboards collection.

Akko Tokyo World Tour R2 (3068B)

Bottom line: Akko did an excellent job with the World Tour Tokyo R2. Not only is it stunning out of the box, but you can customize it with new switches and more.

  • Exquisite design
  • Jelly Pink switches
  • Bluetooth 5.0 and 2.4GHz wireless
  • Compact 65% keyboard
  • Mod-friendly
  • 65% design can put some off
  • Software is a little weak

Akko World Tour Tokyo R2: Price and availability

Akko Tokyo World Tour R2 (3068B)

You'd think a wireless keyboard with solid switches and a striking design would cost a fortune, but Akko managed to keep the cost down and launched the Akko World Tour Tokyo R2 (3068B) with a price tag of just $90. It's more affordable than other 65% keyboards like the Fnatic STREAK65 and manages to feel just as good.

Akko World Tour Tokyo R2: What's good

Akko Tokyo World Tour R2 (3068B)

Immediately, the Akko World Tour Tokyo R2 grabs your attention with the outer packaging. The keyboard ships in a striking pink box with a Japanese-themed design that resembles what's secured inside. Both the packaging and keyboard make use of a pink-and-white look to really stand out in the crowd — even the included USB-C cable is braided in pink.

The Akko World Tour Tokyo R2 truly is a stunning keyboard to gaze at.

Once you've unboxed the keyboard, you have a choice of using the standard keys with some Japanese characters or you can swap out some of the keys for counterparts with special designs. Even the space bar is kitted out with a gateway, Mount Fuji, and Sakura blossoms. The Akko World Tour Tokyo R2 truly is a stunning keyboard to gaze at.

Interestingly, Akko didn't go with RGB lighting that shines through the keycaps. Instead, the company went with a more ambient look with the lights shining on the backplate. I actually prefer this look for the Japanese theme, and it creates a more subtle effect to let the keycap designs take the front stage.

The keyboard itself feels sturdy enough and is of decent build quality. You have to really apply some force before you notice some degree of flex. Pressing down hard in the middle of the keyboard doesn't see much movement, which is good for those with in-game heavy fingers.

To connect the keyboard, Akko allows for Bluetooth 5.0, 2.4GHz wireless with the included dongle, or through the USB-C cable. There are three LED indicators located to the right of the keyboard to show power status and caps lock activation. That's about it as the Akko World Tour Tokyo R2 is a simple, yet elegant keyboard.

Battery life isn't bad, and you could easily achieve more than a day's worth of use with RGB lighting enabled. Depending on how heavy you use the keyboard and what effects you've enabled, you should see up to a couple of days on Bluetooth or the 2.4GHz connection. I prefer wired keyboards and mice, so for the most part I didn't need to leave it on charge.

Using the Akko World Tour Tokyo R2 for typing up content right here on Windows Central was a joy. The Jelly Pink switches are very much like Cherry MX Blue, nice and tactile for typing away thousands of words. For gaming, the experience is about as you'd expect. No issues in heated action titles or relaxed simulators — Terraria Master Mode still manages to kick my rear end.

The software is a little lacking, but I've come to expect just as much from any company that isn't Corsair, Logitech, Razer, or SteelSeries. It's difficult to spend money and perfect your software offering when costs are kept low on the keyboard itself. You can get by with the software, just don't expect anything special like Razer Synapse.

Akko World Tour Tokyo R2: What's not good

Akko Tokyo World Tour R2 (3068B)

There's nothing that's necessarily bad about the 65% Akko World Tour Tokyo R2. It ticks all the right boxes, but some may find the compact design a little too restrictive when looking at what keys are available. There are no function keys, though you can make use of the Fn key to achieve similar functionality.

For this keyboard, in particular, the design is going to be a little like marmite. If you're not a fan of bright colors, you won't like the Tokyo version of this mechanical keyboard. If you want to mod it a little further than simply swapping out keys and switches, you will need to look elsewhere too. But for everyone else, this is a solid foundation.

Akko World Tour Tokyo R2: Competition

Razer BlackWidow Mini

There are countless 65% keyboards out there since the form factor is gaining traction with those who don't utilize the numpad enough and want to save a little desk space. We've looked at some fine mechanical keyboards, including the superb Razer BlackWidow V3 Mini , but most of them don't allow the owner to swap out switches and other internal parts.

The Akko World Tour Tokyo R2 allows you to remove and replace the switches, but that's about as much as you can customize with this keyboard. If you'd prefer to swap out other components and really dive into the deep end for keyboard modding, you'll want to look at something like the MelGeek Mojo68 .

Akko World Tour Tokyo R2: Should you buy it?

Akko Tokyo World Tour R2 (3068B)

You should buy this if ...

  • You like pink
  • You want a 65% keyboard
  • You fancy swapping out the switches at some point
  • You want to try something a little different
  • You prefer subtle RGB lighting

You shouldn't buy this if ...

  • You want function keys
  • You need the numpad
  • You aren't a fan of bright colors

Do you like the color pink? Are you into more compact 65% mechanical keyboards? If the answer to these two questions is yes, you need to check out the Akko World Tour Tokyo R2. It's designed specifically for those wanting something a little more unique, designed to render Tokyo's local cultural characteristics, and the team did an excellent job.

I love the Akko World Tour Tokyo R2. The design is stunning, even after using it for a month. The keycaps are excellent, and the Pink Jelly switches from Akko are a joy to use. It ticks all the boxes for a solid mechanical keyboard that's also pretty decent at gaming. If you want to test the waters with customizing your keyboard's switches and keycaps, Akko's World Tour series is a great place to start.

Once you're ready to mod other parts of the keyboard, this is where the Akko World Tour Tokyo R2 starts to feel a little restrictive. You won't be able to do much more than replace the switches and keycaps, so a more mod-friendly mechanical keyboard will need to be on the cards. For everyone else, you'll have no trouble with the Akko World Tour Tokyo R2 (3068B).

Bottom line: There's plenty to love about the Akko World Tour Tokyo R2. Not only does it look incredible with the bright and vibrant design, but it's also mod-friendly, allowing you to customize it to your liking.

AKKO World Tour Tokyo mechanical keyboard review: as functional as it is adorable

Amber Neely's Avatar

Akko World Tour Tokyo

Last updated 2 years ago

Yes, we're aware that this keyboard isn't for everyone. It's cheerful pink and white design skews feminine, and the Japan-inspired keycaps don't exactly lend themselves to an office setting.

Yet, for someone who wants to add an instant pop of cuteness to their setup, you can't argue— the Akko World Tour Tokyo keyboard definitely makes a statement.

You'll notice that the top row of number keys have been replaced with Japanese-inspired decorative keycaps. This is optional. Included alongside the keyboard are nine decorative number keys, as well as a decorative key that can be used to replace a shift or enter key. You can use all or none of them.

The space bar features a gorgeous wrap around graphic of Mount Fuji

Our favorite part is the space bar, which features an adorable wrap-around Mount Fuji design, which looks fantastic.

Performance

If you like other mechanical keyboards, this one should be no different. It uses Cherry MX switches available in a variety of colors, including blue, brown, and red.

We tested the Cherry MX Red switches and found them to be very comparable to that of our K2's, though they feel ever so slightly more tactile.

They even include a matching USB-C to USB-A cord, allowing you to easily charge your keyboard.

The keyboard connects physically and charges with a USB-C cable. It can be used as a wired keyboard with either the USB-A to USB-C cable it comes with, or a user provided USB-C cable. It can also be connected wirelessly with Bluetooth 3.0, making it compatible with a wide range of devices, including the iPhone and iPad. Its diminutive size makes it easy to slip into your tech bag, and the company's battery claims of up to 150 hours of continuous typing before it needs to be charged are borne out by our testing.

What you'll miss

Because this is a compact layout, it only has 68 keys, which may feel extremely limiting. Most notably, it's missing the function key row at the top, which often is dedicated to some useful shortcuts. It's worth noting the manufacturer does make an 84-key version of this keyboard that features the function key row.

This keyboard also lacks a number pad, making it less useful for data entry tasks or certain types of gaming. Again, the manufacturer makes a 108-key version of this keyboard that also features the number pad, as well as the function keys, too.

While you get some decorative keycaps, no Apple-specific key caps are included

We're willing to overlook the lack of function buttons and a dedicated number pad, but where we do feel it falls a little short is the lack of optional macOS keys. While this is hardly just a problem with this keyboard, it's always a little sad to see Apple users left out of the fun.

Making it easier for Mac

In the event that you do buy this to use with your macOS device, we should point out that you'll want to go into your keyboard settings and make a small modification. Because this is a Windows-designed keyboard, it swaps your Option and your Command keys. This can make adjusting to common shortcuts, like cut, copy, and paste, more difficult than it needs to be.

To fix it back to the correct layout, head into the Keyboard section of Settings and click the Modifier Keys button. From there, use these settings.

settings

This works for all Windows-style keyboards, too, not just this one.

While not for everyone, we think that the Akko World Tour Tokyo keyboard is a fantastic portable solution to throw in your bag along with your iPad. It's a fun keyboard with a unique look that can help brighten up your workspace. If you wanna snag your own Akko World Tour Tokyo keyboard, you can head over to Amazon, where they retail for $99.

Rating: 4 out of 5

  • Unique, Japanese-themed keyboard
  • Cherry MX mechanical switches available in a variety of colors
  • Internal battery and Bluetooth allow it to be used with wide range of devices
  • Native USB-C connectivity
  • No optional Command and Option Switches
  • Defaults to Windows layout, takes some customizing

I occasionally buy unique keyboards, but I can’t be bothered to do any customization. Either make it work for Mac/iOS out of the box, or forget it.

Owners of this keyboard most likely do not have to worry about it being stolen...  :*

Forget the function keys or the 10-pad, it appears this doesn't even label the number keys.  Are users just supposed to remember which emoji represents the number 5, for example?  Bizarre.

randominternetperson said: Forget the function keys or the 10-pad, it appears this doesn't even label the number keys.  Are users just supposed to remember which emoji represents the number 5, for example?  Bizarre. Child's play for a touch typist. And most likely for a child as well. Nothing  bizarre about that. This keyboard, like millions of other products, is for those who can appreciate and deal with it. Others need not apply.

Are Tokyo’s public toilets the new tourist attractions? Here are 13 unique ones worth visiting

Tired of crowded and overhyped tourist attractions in Tokyo? Why not join a toilet tour in Shibuya? CNA Lifestyle visited a few of these facilities under the Tokyo Toilet Project that left us flushed with excitement.

Japanese toilets designed by Shigeru Ban and Kazoo Sato (Photos: CNA/Jasper Loh)

This audio is generated by an AI tool.

A few months back, I caught the film Perfect Days. The Oscar-nominated movie by renowned director Wim Wenders followed a Japanese toilet janitor who performs his job with pride and dedication – and featured some cool-looking restrooms in Tokyo.

Now, I normally don’t give public toilets a second thought – I walk in, take care of business, wash up and walk out. But the toilets in the movie, which I later learned was part of something called the Tokyo Toilet Project (TTP) , got me so intrigued that I decided I wanted to check them out during my Japan trip earlier this month.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by CNA (@channelnewsasia)

THE TOKYO TOILET PROJECT

Launched in 2020 by The Nippon Foundation non-profit organisation, the TTP’s aim was to promote the use of public toilets and remove the stigma of them being dark, unsafe and unsanitary, especially for children and women.

Sixteen world class designers, architects and creatives such as Tadao Ando, Kengo Kuma, Shigeru Ban and Nigo were tasked to redesign and improve the accessibility of 17 public toilets situated around the Shibuya district  – which explains why many of them look like art installations.

And as I eventually found out, you can actually take a tour of these toilets. Nearme , a shuttle service provider, organises twice-weekly tours. For ¥4,950 (SG$42.50), you can take your pick from two routes: The East or the West course. The West course, which I took, features nine toilets while the East route has eight. Each tour takes about two hours.

Here’s a roundup of the locations I visited. Plus a few more I randomly stumbled upon. Happy toilet hunting!

1. NABESHIMA SHOTO PARK TOILET (KENGO KUMA)

tokyo world tour keyboard

Architect Kengo Kuma wanted to make this public facility a site to connect people with nature. Situated near a playground that overlooks a lush greenery of trees, the toilets resemble a village hidden within a forest. There are five cubicles, all covered up with planks of cedar wood, lending them a raw, rugged feel.

2. YOYOGI FUKAMACHI MINI PARK TOILET (SHIGERU BAN)

tokyo world tour keyboard

Pritzker Prize winner Shigeru Ban has two toilets on the list and both feature a new technology that lets users know if a toilet is in use or not – when the door is lock, the glass panels turn opaque to ensure privacy.

3. HARU-NO-OGAWA COMMUNITY PARK TOILET (SHIGERU BAN)

tokyo world tour keyboard

His second toilet employs the same technology and the only difference between the two are in the shades used on the glass panels – this one goes from a cool shade of turquoise green to blue while the former goes from warm orange to purple.

4. JINGU-DORI PARK TOILET (TADAO ANDO)

tokyo world tour keyboard

Architect and Pritzker Prize winner Ando described public toilets as a place where people can seek refuge. With that concept, he created a circular minimalist toilet with the walls made of vertical metal blinders for better ventilation. The rounded canopy is extended out and acts as a place for Amayadori, meaning “waiting out the rain” in Japanese. The overall design is both thoughtful yet functional.

5. YOYOGI  HACHIMAN PUBLIC TOILET (TOYO ITO)

tokyo world tour keyboard

Located beneath a hilly walk up the Yoyogi Hachiman shrine, the restrooms here used to be dark and uninviting. Pritzker Prize winner Toyo Ito wanted to make the toilets well lit, so users need not worry about using it at night. He designed the space as a cluster of three mushroom-like towers that look like they’re sprouting out of the ground. The brown gradient tiles represent the energy of earth rising to the sky.

6. NISHIHARA ITCHOME PARK (TAKENOSUKE SAKAKURA)

tokyo world tour keyboard

The three unisex restrooms here feature bright green doors that are at once calm and welcoming. The word Andon translates to paper lantern in Japanese. And that’s what the toilets look like. At night, the frosted glass printed with trees glows like a lantern when lit. Takenosuke Sakakura’s intention was to give people feel a sense of serenity and assurance when using the facility.

7. NANAGO DORI PARK TOILET (KAZOO SATO)

tokyo world tour keyboard

Named Hi Toilet , the white spherical shape of the structure looks like a scene right out of a sci-fi movie. With Hi Toilet, Kazoo and his team aimed to make this the world’s most hygienic toilet using voice control technology. Users can open the door, change the color of the lights, flush and even play music, all without making any form of physical contact. The globe shape also allows for better air circulation and keeps the toilet from smelling bad.

8. NISHISANDO PUBLIC TOILET (SOU FUJIMOTO)

tokyo world tour keyboard

Sou Fujimoto embraced a playful approach to his design. He wanted the toilets to feel like an urban water fountain in the city and a vessel that serves everyone. The concave sink at the centre feature taps of different heights so that users of all ages can wash their hands conveniently. The cut-through path across the structure also creates a sense of openness and safety for the public.

9. JINGUMAE PUBLIC TOILET (NIGO)

tokyo world tour keyboard

Japanese fashion designer, DJ record producer and entrepreneur Nigo designed the toilet near Harajuku where Japanese street fashion originated. Simple yet playful, he approached the design of the restroom based on comfort and easy accessibility. The structure, partially surrounded by white fences and mint green doors, resembles how one would doodle a house as a child.

10. SASAZUKA GREENWAY PUBLIC TOILET (JUNKO KOBAYASHI)

tokyo world tour keyboard

Built just beneath the Keio line Sasazuka train station, the group of weather resistant cylinders are constructed with a yellow canopy to counter the claustrophobic feeling of being located under the train tracks. While the exterior looks rusty and worn out, the restrooms feel bright and clean. The cute bunnies peeking out of the wall light up at night, giving out a playful vibe.

11. HATAGAYA PUBLIC TOILET (MILES PENNINGTON/ UNIVERSITY OF TOKYO DLX DESIGN LAB)

tokyo world tour keyboard

British designer and professor Miles Pennington, together with the University of Tokyo DLX Design Lab, wanted to build a restroom that not only serves its function, but also doubles up as an area to bring the local community together. The structure is designed such that it can also be used as a space for events or pop ups.

12. HIGASHI SANCHOME PUBLIC TOILET (NAO TAMURA)

tokyo world tour keyboard

Product designer Nao Tamura’s approach her design as traditional Japanese gift wrapping, with the intention for users to feel safe and have a sense of privacy. Striking red is used on the exterior because it attracts attention, and she hopes that it will also deter unlawful acts.

13. EBISU EAST PARK TOILET (FUMIHIKO MAKI)

tokyo world tour keyboard

Located near a playground that has long been a part of the local community, Pritzker Prize winner Fumihiko Maki designed the facility as a white pavilion with curvy roof as well as a little courtyard at the centre that is bright airy and a place for resting. This place is also known as the Squid Toilet because the park was formerly known as Octopus Park due to the octopus-shaped slides in playground.

While I didn’t manage to visit all the toilets under the TTP, the experience was more than enough to give me a better understanding of Japan’s cultural values and innovative designs (not to mention their outlook on hygiene). Hopefully, it inspires other cities and organisations to rethink these often overlooked and undervalued public places.

U.S. Olympic swim trials make history with a new world record and epic crowds

Headshot of Brian Mann

History was made over the weekend at U.S. Olympic swim trials in Indianapolis

Gretchen Walsh swims during the Women's 100 butterfly finals on Sunday at the U.S. Swimming Olympic Trials in Indianapolis. A day after setting a new world record in the event, Walsh locked in a place on the swimming team that will travel to Paris.

INDIANAPOLIS — U.S. Olympic swim trials underway here have already made history with a new world record, seen major come-back stories play out and shown that legend Katie Ledecky , winner of seven Olympic gold medals, is still in top form.

The banger race so far at the Lucas Oil NFL stadium - converted for this event into a world-class swimming venue - was Gretchen Walsh's world-record shattering performance Saturday in the 100-meter butterfly.

Walsh, a 21-year-old Nashville native, captured a time of 55.18 seconds in a semifinal race, eclipsing the mark set by Sweden's Sarah Sjöström eight years ago at the Rio de Janeiro Olympics .

"I was probably the most shocked," Walsh said of her performance. "I was totally in awe, kind of surprised."

On Sunday, Walsh had to swim in top form again to capture the national championship in the 100-meter butterfly event and secure her first trip to the Olympic Games.

After past disappointments, big wins for Walsh, Foster

Walsh's breakout performance is one of the comeback stories taking shape at these Olympic trials.

Four years ago, she failed to make the U.S. team, while her sister Alex Walsh, another top American swimmer, traveled to Tokyo in 2021.

"That was a hard setback to process," said Gretchen Walsh.

Carson Foster, who also fell crushingly short of making the Tokyo Summer Olympics , also won a place on the Paris team on Sunday.

Foster won the men's 400-meter individual medley finals, a race that includes freestyle, butterfly, backstroke, and breaststroke.

"There was still a fear because of what happened three years ago, coming to this meet" said the 22-year-old from Cincinnati. "It's a full-circle moment for sure."

Ledecky still a dominant force

One question put to rest here in Indianapolis is the status of American swimming legend Katie Ledecky.

Katie Ledecky tells NPR about her plans for the Paris Olympics — and LA in 2028

Interview highlights

Katie ledecky tells npr about her plans for the paris olympics — and la in 2028.

Ledecky, age 27, has won seven gold medals for the U.S., a powerhouse run that dates back to the 2012 London Olympics.

She spent part of 2024 out on a book tour, suggesting her focus might not be on these swimming trials or the gauntlet ahead at the Paris Games.

But Ledecky won the women's 400-meter freestyle in a fiercely competitive field by nearly four seconds.

Asked by NPR if it was difficult to refocus for this competition, Ledecky laughed.

"I actually don’t think it is. I think it’s kind of the opposite for me," Ledecky said. "I enjoy this more and more each year. That's why I've been able to be consistent."

Organizers say this nine-day event, which continues through June 23rd, has already set another record of the largest crowd ever for a swimming competition.

Crews converted the Lucas Oil NFL stadium, home to the Indianapolis Colts, into a world-class Olympic-caliber swimming venue. On Saturday night, more than 20,000 fans turned out to see American athletes compete.

More than 20,000 fans squeezed into the stadium Saturday night.

"I've never been to a swim meet like this with this excitement and crowd," said Lucy Weidert, who traveled from Spokane, Wash. to watch her grandson compete. "It’s been amazing."
