Michael, our tour guide, was patient, friendly, and flexible with different age travelers and physical abilities by adjusting the activities for them. The Best of Korea tour's itinerary was very full. I think many of us enjoyed the itinerary and the experiences we had. I, particularly, enjoyed the various transportation methods which added to the experience. The War Memorial Hall of Korea museum is a big museum and had very important history. Most of us needed more time. I think this activity could of come at the beginning of the tour for us to have better knowledge of Korean history. On the tour's last day, after the museum, most of us thought there was going to be a group dinner. The tours I have been in the past had end of the tour dinner to say good bye and show our appreciation to the tour guide. It's nice to have a closure after spending a week together. We were disappointed that the day just ended after returning to the hotel. After the DMZ visit, we had a very nice lunch at a well known restaurant. This time could of have been a good opportunity to say good bye but I think due to limited time, food came out late, we didn't linger.

great overview of Korea, guide was knowledgable and friendly, value for money as many delicious and authentic meals were included. Hotels were modern and comfortable. My only complaint was the hotel in Seoul was not as well located as it could have been a bit far from the main sites. However for the price this was an extremely good value tour and I enjoyed it very much and would have no hesitation in recommending it.

I really hate giving a bad review and liked Frank Shinn. He tried to do his best but his English was lacking. He did not explain much or give any information or interesting stories about places we were going or while on the way to. It seemed we were on our own and not led to the more interesting spots that were in the tour. The bus driver was excellent and felt very safe with his driving. Of the four hotels, the Commodore was the worst, bad food, and hot rooms.

Fantastic introduction to Korean food and culture. This trip had a great mix of walking, eating and chillin. If you’re an expert in Korean food, this may not be the best tour since it’s an intro with slightly more western tastes in mind, but we did try exotic things like murder hornet soju! Haha everything was good and the group was awesome. Everyone got along well, and the guide Michelle made the tour go very smoothly. Some days were >20k steps so def being comfortable walking shoes. One thing to remember is that the dmz visit is not a part of the tour, and in general the dmz is not available on Mondays… so if adding on, you’d have to stay until Tuesday or do it Sunday before tour starts.

I have way to many positive things to mention about this trip. First of all Jacob our tour guide went beyond being an amazing leader. The first few days by myself in in Seoul were overwhelming but having Jacob who knew what he was doing in the city made it feel like our group was part of the city, and we felt safe and comfortable walking the streets Jacob's amount of knowledge about the food , history and hidden gems made the days fly by. All accommodations and restaurants were fantastic. I absolutely recommend this tour. The only problem with the tour was that it ended too early. Because of this tour I am absolutely coming back to South Korea and hope Jacob can be my tour guide. Thanks for an amazing trip.

It was a good tour. But some people in the group gave poor Antonio a hard time. It was hard for him to do in 2 languages. Great guide & driver.

I was scheduled for the May 27-June 1,2024 Korea Express trip. However, I wound up getting stranded at the airport in Atlanta even though I was booked on 2 flights both were oversold. So I called to let tour company know about the situation and I even spoke with the tour guide on Korea. This happened on Sunday-Monday(which was Monday-Tuesday in Korea). I inquired about a partial refund but kept getting told to call back(kept calling Spain) and speak with a higher agent. So during the course of a week I was informed that since I waited too late that I had lost 100% of the money I had paid. I was told that I waited too late and that the tour guide in Korea didn’t find out I wasn’t coming until the trip was over. Although, I called one day into the trip, nothing was done on my behalf. I even asked if they could issue a credit I could use towards a future trip with them but to no avail. I’m still going to book my Dream Trip but with another tour company. I guess I’ll take the loss of $1,700+ as an expensive lesson learned.

The only problem was getting food in the evening from some of the towns and hotels because they were either closing for the night or the hotels didn’t serve after 8 or 9 pm. So maybe knowing this the tour guide can arrange for something earlier. Otherwise the tour guide and driver were wonderful.

The tour on the whole was good. The only hotel I would change is the Koreana. Firstly their staff know very little English and they are very unfriendly and not helpful at all. Also this hotel is situated right where most of the protest rallys occur so all roads leading to it especially on the weekends are closed. The hotel staff make no effort to help their guests check in or check out. Even though our room was available 2 hours before check in time they wanted to charge us an additional fee to check in early after we had an awful time trying to get to their hotel with all the roads closed because of the protest rally.Even on the day our tour started the tour guide could not meet us at the designated spot because the roads were closed due to the protests. The guide got to us about 25 minutes later than what was agreed.

I highly recommend the Soulful South Korea trip. It was a busy trip but an excellent way to see a variety of cities and other areas of South Korea and to take part in a variety of activities - some perhaps once in a lifetime - all wonderfully organised by our Local Insider Yong. Dear TourRadar, Im back home from a wonderful tour experience booked via your site. The KShuttle agency was just arranged perfectly. We enjoyed everything from booking, pickup, hotels, the comfy bus and all the beautiful cities we went exploring. We met such nice fellow travellers and our guide Andy was really kind with good English. The bus driver was also very nice and polite. Most of this tour’s destination were just ok, only 2 locations were better and the duration of stay per location can use some improvements. For example, they gave us over 2 hours at one temple and not enough time at the national park. Most of our lunch times were pressed short, everything is in Korean so we have to google translate after waiting in lines after we find which place we want to order from. And it went on like that throughout our week. I read the itinerary when I signed up but their details were not very clear. We take at least 1 multi day tour if not more during our vacations and this tour did not compare at all. After this tour ended, we had a few extra days left and trained back to Busan, bought a day tour in Busan and it had so much more to see. The good parts of this tour was that we got to visit all the different villages and learned some of their history.

A very good tour that I would highly recommend. But, it could be better. We loved the various destinations and generally had ample time to take everything in. Our bus was fine and the driver was excellent. A good driver and helpful with luggage. The hotels were good, but food wax an issue. Restaurants were closed so twice we had to go out and find a suitable restaurant. MacDonalds. Twice we found a 7-11 type shops and bought food and took it back tour room. Our guide was a good bloke, but his English was just OK. Given those issues, it was a terrific tour and gave us a good insight to this fabulous country.

A trip of a lifetime !!. We had the most incredible tour guide Damien who has the most warm energy always willing to answer and help out. The intenary was amazing as well I feel that there was something for everyone. I only wished we would have done the cruise to Jeju island and spent more time there but of course, I think that the flight arrangement after it wasn't possible was prompt and very efficient. Overall planning was great ( flights, hotel, pick up from the airport, guide). Few areas for improvement would be knowledgeable updates on tourist visa information, distance between locations were widely miscalculated and generally took an hour or more to get to our destinations between cities, the number of stops between drives was too frequent also causing delays, location of hotels wasn’t in the best locations (generally out of the way) and it would have been helpful to let us know we would be responsible for our tour guides lunch and snacks and that we would be taking lunch with them for all our lunches.

Geograhy and environment.

South Korea is located at the south end of the Korean Peninsula, between the Sea of Japan and the Yellow Sea. Separated from   Japan   by the Korean Strait and demarcated from the state of North Korea by Korean Demilitarized Zone (DMZ), South Korea's terrain is a mix of flat lowlands and forested mountains. The coasts of South Korea are rocky and jagged, with thousands of islands (mostly inhabitable) scattered off the coastline.

Culture and customs

South Korea draws some traditions and customs from other neighboring countries in Asia, with a culture that stems from Confucianism. This system of philosophical and ethical teachings was introduced to South Korea in the 4 th century through Chinese scholars and was quickly embraced by the wider population until it officially became the state ideology in the early 1900s.

Confucianism emphasizes respect for aging, elders and ancestors, an intrinsic hierarchy that runs through work and social life, and upholds traditional family roles so you’ll often see families living together in one house.

During your travels around South Korea, you’ll also see plenty of traditions such as the act of bowing when greeting people, women wearing traditional dress (hanbok) and the practice of taekwondo (Korean martial arts). As well as ancient beliefs, new generations of South Koreans are embracing a modernized culture, one full of K-pop, Korean cosmetics and popular foods like kimchi and tteokbokki.

History and government

South Korea’s had an often turbulent history dating back to around 8000 BC when it was known as just Korea, but the country’s most impactful conflict began in the 1500s with the attempted Japanese invasion. Korea went on to become a Japanese colony in 1910 following its annexation of the Korean Empire, which ended in 1945 at the conclusion of World War II.

The country was then divided into two parts, the northern part which was protected by the Soviet Union and the southern part which was protected largely by the United States. Both the northern and southern parts of Korea officially became North and South Korea in 1948 when the two regions failed to agree on forming one, united government.

In 1950, North Korea set in motion the Korean War which was intended to unify the two countries under communism. But after much destruction to infrastructure and loss of human life, a cease-fire was called in 1953 with both countries signing the 1953 Korean Armistice Agreement. The two countries have since agreed to work towards a final settlement (The Peace Treaty on the Korean Peninsula) to formally and officially end the Korean War.

South Korea now enjoys a fully prosperous economy with a capital economic standing similar to that of countries such as the United States, Japan, and various countries in Western Europe.

Do i need a covid-19 vaccine to join an intrepid trip.

When is the best time to visit South Korea?

Autumn and spring are considered the optimal times to holiday in South Korea, as the extreme temperatures that are present during summer and winter can make travel uncomfortable at times. Is tipping customary in South Korea?

Tipping in some establishments (particularly more traditional ones) is considered impolite, and is sometimes indicated with a 'no tipping' sign! Western-style, tourist-orientated places, however, usually welcome and receive tips. Use your discretion.

What is the internet access like in South Korea?

With one of the most developed internet infrastructures in the world, accessing the internet is easy in South Korea. Wi-Fi hot spots and cyber cafes are easily found in the cities, although when traveling in remote areas please be aware that internet access may be harder to find.

Can I use my cell phone while in South Korea?

Travelers should be able to use their cell phones in South Korea's cities and urban areas, as coverage is good. As in other countries, rural and mountainous areas may have less mobile phone receptivity. Ensure global roaming is activated with your service provider before leaving home.

What are the toilets like in South Korea?

South Korea has a combination of squat toilets and western-style flushable toilets. It's a good idea to carry your own toilet paper and hand sanitizer or soap while on holiday, as these are rarely provided in public toilets.

Tap water is considered safe to drink in many parts of South Korea unless otherwise marked. Ask your leader for guidance if you are unsure whether to drink tap water in the area you are traveling in.

Are credit cards accepted widely in South Korea?

Credit cards are usually accepted by hotels and large retailers. Smaller shops and restaurants may not accept credit cards, so always carry enough money to cover purchases, as paying with a credit card may not always be an option in South Korea.

ATMs are plentiful in large cities and urban centers, although not all ATMs accept foreign cards. Look for Global or Citibank ATMs, which usually accept cards from other countries.

2 . Are Koreans allowed on trips?

Korea Travel Mate tours are primarily supported by the Korean government for foreigners. As a result, we will be unable to accommodate your Korean friends. However, we do occasionally organize tours in which Koreans can join. This information is always available in the signup form for each trip.

3 . How to pay for the trips?

Payment Options:

Korea Travel Mate trips are mainly operated on weekends either a day trip or an overnight trip. However, we occasionally run trips on weekdays as well.

5 . Are there overseas tours too?

About once or twice a year, Korea Travel Mate ventures out of Korea to take you on some great travel adventures to neighboring countries, such as Japan.

6. Who can join the trips?

Any foreigners who are living in Korea or traveling to/in Korea.

7. Do you provide private tour packages?

Yes, private tours can be organized and run while keeping Korea Travel Mate's policies and strategies in mind. As a result, if you have a community with whom you would like to have your own customized tour, you are only a phone call, email, or message away from getting it started.

8. Do you provide private rooms if needed?

Yes, on most of the trips private rooms can be provided for the extra cost that is mentioned in the signup form of the specific trip.

9. Do you provide Halal or Vegetarian/Vegan food?

Please note that Halal meat, Vegetarian, or Vegan meals are not provided during our trips. We travel to rural areas where such options are either not available or exceed the budget of our trip. We strongly advise travelers requiring Halal food to opt for vegetable-based options and refrain from consuming meat during the trip. 

While we strive to accommodate vegetarian preferences by requesting alternative options from restaurants where possible, in some rural areas this may not be feasible. If the provided food is not suitable, travelers must bring their own or purchase alternative meals during the tour. 

It is always indicated in our signup forms "at some points you may be obliged to pick and choose from what is supplied."

Korea Tour Planner is a travel agency that provides private tours of South Korea. It was founded by Yujin Yu and me, Jay Jung. I am also the main guide for our agency. Nice to meet you!

Our aim is to provide our guests with the most flexible, customized private tours of South Korea, a country of dynamic history. We understand that each traveler has different wants and needs. You’re the factor that makes each of our trips special. Our job is to be a facilitator between you and the place! Feel free to tell us what you require: special needs, a particular place of interest, your favorite dish, something off the beaten path, etc. If you’re interested in going to places that most other travel agencies don’t go, you’ve come to the right place.

With over 20 years of experience in the field, we are quite capable of accompanying you to your destination safely. In addition, we are experts in local culture and history. We are a registered tourism business certified under the Tourism Promotion Law.

Unlike big package deals offered by large agencies for a suspiciously low price, we will not take you shopping at commissioned gift shops or lock you into a fixed itinerary – a big waste of your time, in our opinion. Your visit wil remain personal and memorable.

We go where YOU want to go.

It’s up to you! But we are always available to give suggestions and options, or course. Planning a smooth route from one place to the next takes skill, and that’s what we have. Leave those details to us. We offer sedans, vans, or even tours specialized for experiencing the public transportation system – we call it the BMW (bus-metro-walking) tour. 😉

With about 70% of our country’s terrain being covered by mountains, it will come as no surprise that locals here love to ski. North Korea’s Latest Missile Test Suggests Arms Race With South

The North said it tested a missile with a “super-large warhead” on Monday. The South has similar missiles, meant to target underground bunkers.

North Korea said on Tuesday that it had tested a new ballistic missile with a “super-large warhead,” the most recent development in an arms race with South Korea as the countries vie to introduce weapons of increasingly destructive power.

Two of the new missiles, known as the Hwasong-11Da-4.5, were launched on Monday, each with a dummy warhead that weighed 4.5 tons, the North’s official Korean Central News Agency said. ​Ballistic missiles often carry warheads that weigh less than a ton.

South Korea already has similar missiles that can deliver large warheads. Col. Lee Sung-jun, a spokesman for the South’s military, said the North’s Hwasong-11 series missiles were believed to be capable of carrying payloads of half a ton to 2.5 tons, but that it was “theoretically possible” to modify them to deliver a 4.5-ton payload.

But Colonel Lee accused North Korea of deceptively exaggerating its capabilities in the Tuesday report. One of the two missiles the North launched on Monday crashed in an empty field after an “abnormal” flight, he said.

The United States has accused North Korea of supplying Hwasong-11 missiles to Russia for use against Ukraine. ​Both Pyongyang and Moscow have denied trading in arms, which would violate United Nations Security Council resolutions imposed on the North because of its nuclear weapons program.

The launch Monday was the second major weapons test reported by the North since its leader, Kim Jong-un, hosted President Vladimir V. Putin of Russia for talks in Pyongyang on June 19. Last week, North Korea claimed for the first time that it had tested technology for launching several nuclear warheads with a single missile; the South cast doubt on that report, too.

South Korea, citing the North’s growing nuclear threat, has ramped up its own military spending​ in recent years. That includes its development of ballistic missiles with large warheads, meant to target underground bunkers where North Korea keeps its nuclear arsenal, and where its political and military leaders could hide in the event of war​. The South has also procured American stealth jets .

In 2020, the South said it ha​d developed a ballistic missile with​ “one of the largest warheads in the world​.” I​n 2021, Mr. Kim vowed to develop a “super-large nuclear warhead,”​ and later that year, North Korea said it had launched a new ballistic missile that​ could carry a 2.5-ton warhead. ​

South Korean defense officials later said they were developing a ballistic missile with ​an even bigger warhead. South Korean news outlets said it could carry a payload of up to ​eight tons.

Mr. Putin’s visit to Pyongyang last month triggered fears in the region that Russia would ​help North Korea develop its missiles in return for large shipments of artillery shells, ballistic missiles and other conventional munitions for Russia’s war of attrition in Ukraine.​ Mr. Kim and Mr. Putin also signed a ​treaty that included a pledge of mutual defense if either ​country were attacked.

North Korea said its missile test this week was a success “of great significance.” The results were reported to a plenary meeting of the ruling Workers’ Party’s Central Committee that ended on Monday, the state media report said. It said the Hwasong-11Da-4.5 would be tested again later this month.

Mr. Kim has used Workers’ Party meetings to issue​ policy goals and to tighten his grip on power. ​For the first time, state media photos from the latest meeting showed delegates wearing pins bearing ​Mr. Kim’s image , like the ones they have worn for years to honor Mr. Kim’s predecessors as supreme leader, his father and his grandfather.

Japan and Korea join Australian-led pushback on Chinese hacking

An advisory issued by key regional partners led by Australia, has accused a Chinese spy agency of repeatedly targeting government and private sector networks in Australia and the wider region.

It detailed the activities of the APT40 (Advanced Persistent Threat) group which is linked to Beijing's Ministry of State Security.

The statement is a significant escalation of international pushback against Beijing's activities and the first Australian-led, direct technical attribution of malicious cyber activity to a Chinese state-sponsored actor. 

Australia and key regional partners are accusing a Chinese spy agency of cyber espionage, targeting government and business networks, in a large-scale operation that involves stealing hundreds of usernames and passwords.

Cyber intelligence agency the Australian Signals Directorate (ASD) has just published a new advisory detailing the activities of the notorious APT40 (Advanced Persistent Threat) group, which is linked to Beijing's Ministry of State Security (MSS).

"APT40 has repeatedly targeted Australian networks as well as government and private sector networks in the region, and the threat they pose to our networks is ongoing," the advisory published on Tuesday morning said.

"Notably, APT40 possesses the capability to rapidly transform and adapt exploit proof-of-concept(s) (POCs) of new vulnerabilities and immediately utilise them against target networks possessing the infrastructure of the associated vulnerability.

"APT40 regularly conducts reconnaissance against networks of interest, including networks in the authoring agencies' countries, looking for opportunities to compromise its targets," the statement added.

Five Eyes intelligence partners including the United States and United Kingdom have joined the Australian-led attribution, along with Germany, South Korea and Japan, in what represents a significant escalation of international pushback against Beijing's activities.

While Australia has previously joined international partners in cyber attributions against the MSS , this is the first Australian-led, direct technical attribution of malicious cyber activity to a Chinese state-sponsored actor. 

APT40 is suspected of regularly targeting Australian government and private sector networks and attempts to exploit compromised office and work-from-home devices to gain access to sensitive IT networks.

By exploiting devices with aging technology, which have generally missed out on software upgrades and regular patching, the MSS sponsored hackers are often able to gain unauthorised access and blend in with legitimate traffic on networks.

On Tuesday the ABC also revealed that the Home Affairs secretary had ordered a comprehensive audit of all internet-facing technology used by Commonwealth agencies over rising concerns about foreign interference and influence threats . 

"We have always said we engage with China without compromising on what is important for Australia and to Australians," Foreign Minister Penny Wong said in a statement.

"The Albanese government is increasing Australia's diplomatic, economic and defence engagement with Japan and Korea, as well as with South-East Asia, with India, with the Quad and through AUKUS.

"It is all part of our work to make Australia stronger and more influential in the world, and to keep Australians safe."

A spokesperson for the Chinese embassy in Canberra said China had a "consistent and clear position on this issue".

"We oppose any groundless smears and accusations against China," the spokesperson said. 

"Keeping the cyberspace safe is a global challenge. In fact, China is a major victim of cyber attacks. 

"We keep a firm stance against all forms of cyber attacks and resort to lawful methods in tackling them. 

"China does not encourage, support or condone attacks launched by hackers."
