The Cotswolds

Welcome to the old world.

"Think of England as a very large book. The Cotswolds would be an unfussy chapter in the middle somewhere where there is lots of limestone and even more sheep.” - Susan Meissner, Secrets of a Charmed Life

Unfussy. Because life slows down in the Cotswolds. Trickling rivers flow under toy-town bridges. Cottages line up on cobbled lanes. Rolling plains tumble into castles and manor houses.

Instead what you feel is a great surge of gratitude that a place like this exists. That you're lucky enough to be here. That your camera is fully charged and all that's expected of you is to enjoy where you are.

The Cotswolds Guided Day Tour

A Day in Quintessential England The Cotswolds are known for their traditional, English, countryside villages with buildings made from distinctive gold-coloured Cotswold limestone and for their gorgeous rolling hills. The Cotswolds has been designated the largest Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in England. The 2 villages that we always visit are Burford & Stow on the Wold, with likely visits to other Cotswolds' villages too, subject to timing, the size of the group & other changeable factors. The town of Burford is known as the southern gateway to The Cotswolds. Here you will have time to explore the town including the main street that slopes gently to the River Windrush lined with shops on either side that has not changed much since the 1500s & the Burford Parish Church of St John the Baptist, where hundreds of Levellers (a group fighting for equality and democracy) were imprisoned - and some executed - during the English Civil War. Stow on the Wold is a pretty market town and a good place to grab some lunch. Here you can explore the old church featuring its iconic door with two trees growing around the sides. Visit the Porch House, the 'oldest pub in Britain'', that was once part of Evesham Abbey plus there is a traditional village 'stocks' and plenty of Civil War history too.

No extra stops, no cramming in other places that aren’t in the Cotswolds, just a full day of fun in the countryside with charming local guides who know the area like the back of their hands and an air-conditioned tour van that will take you along the winding roads with only a handful of other people on board.

You’ll start in the charming town of Burford to see houses that date back almost 600 years and churches that you have to see to believe.

You’ll get time to stroll the shops on the high street, before heading out to Bibury, making this also a Bibury tour from London!

Known as the “prettiest village in England,” Bibury is basically what you see on all of the screensavers.

Yes, seriously.

This is the symbolic Cotswolds, but it’s so real.

For lunch, you’ll get to explore Bourton-on-the-Water. Choose a place next to the river and enjoy an extended period of time here.

The last stop of the day is Stow-on-the-Wold, which inspired JRR Tolkien and is also a great place for history buffs, as it was where the last battle of the English Civil War took place.

After a full day out, relax on the bus as you get dropped back off in London, near South Kensington tube station, and head back to your London hotel filled with Cotswold memories.

  • 2-course lunch in the Cotswolds
  • Stops in Burford, Bibury, Bourton-on-the-Water and Stow-on-the-Wold

Want a fantastic lunch included on your Cotswolds bus tour from London?

This tour follows a similar route to my #1 pick, starting off in Burford so you can see the incredible tea shops, then heading onto Bibury for some pictures of the iconic thatched houses.

But Bibury holds another treasure on this tour – lunch at the Swan hotel!

Dine with your traveling companions as you overlook the river, soaking in the views and appreciating a magical day out.

You don’t have to wait until everyone is finished with lunch – if you finish early, you can explore a bit before taking off to the next location with the group.

Your private tour guide will take you on short walking tours so you can see the sights of the Cotswolds, and you’ll finish the day with some free time in Stow-on-the-Wold before heading back to London.

This is a larger group experience, with up to 50 people allowed per tour on the tour bus, so keep this in mind when choosing if this one is right for you.

UK Travel Planning Guide: the FAQs

🏥 Should I buy UK travel insurance?

Absolutely yes. Basic coverage is not expensive, and as a visitor you are NOT covered under the NHS. Compare policies and prices with Travel Insurance Master here , a big name in the travel insurance business, and cross that off your list.

🔌 Do I need travel adapters for the UK?

Yes, you do, otherwise you won’t be able to plug in your electronics/phone/lifelines. I recommend this one , which is all-in-one so you can use it in other countries.

🚗 What do I need to drive in the UK?

The first thing you need to check out if you’re planning on renting a car in the UK is this guide to driving in the UK for visitors – the roads, signs, and driving experience will likely not be what you’re used to and it’s essential to prepare yourself to stay safe and aware.

🛌 What’s the best way to book hotels in the UK?

For UK hotels, Booking is the best site as it offers free cancellation on many properties. If you want an apartment, I always recommend VRBO over AirBnb.

📳 Will my phone work in the UK?

Yes – if you set it up right. Check out my guide on making your foreign phone work in the UK to ensure that you get the type of service you need.

🚿 Can I drink the water in the UK?

Yes, UK water is great and perfectly safe. But drink out of taps in any kitchen or use water fountains. Double check before drinking out of the taps in hotel bathrooms, though, as they may be on a different system. London water is safe to drink .

Villages of The Cotswolds Small Group Tours

With its rustic rural charm, rolling hills, vibrant market towns and picture-perfect villages, the Cotswolds cover nearly 800 square miles of unspoilt countryside. Take a small group trip through its rolling hills, home to some of England's most famous and historic towns and villages.

An Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, this range of hills in west-central England is packed with picturesque villages built of Cotswold stone, beautiful churches and vast manor houses. As you make your way through little villages and historic market towns , you will have the opportunity to explore the honey-coloured cottages of Bourton-on-the-Water , Bibury and Burford .

Evan Evans Tours Office: 258 Vauxhall Bridge Rd, London, SW1V 1BS

Covering almost 800 square miles and no fewer than five English counties, the Cotswolds are the single largest designated Area of Natural Beauty in the UK. The area was once renowned for its wool production, reminders of which you can still see today.

During this Experience, we will be visiting three picturesque villages hidden in the heart of the Cotswolds, with honey-coloured limestone period buildings and rich cultural heritage. Relax aboard your Luxury Small Group Vehicle with an expert guide as you enjoy the best of the English countryside.

On arriving at Bibury, you may think you have been transported back to a different age. The village was once described by the British poet, artist and novelist William Morris (1834-96) as “the most beautiful village in England”.

Bibury’s attractions include Arlington Row, a 17th-century row of weavers' cottages built of local stone next to the River Coln. It is one of the most photographed areas in the region and was chosen as a location for the 2007 film ‘Stardust’. Close by, you will find the Bibury Trout Farm and a Saxon Church.

The River Coln flows between the main village street and a watermeadow: together with Arlington Row as a backdrop, it makes one of the most picturesque scenes you will find in the Cotswolds.

Burford is known as the gateway to the Cotswolds. Its High Street slopes from the high Wolds, where you have beautiful views over the open countryside, down to the willow-fringed River Windrush in the pretty Windrush valley.

Regularly voted one of the prettiest villages in England , Bourton-on -the-Water has a unique appeal to visitors and residents alike. Known as the Venice of the Cotswolds, this one village offers a wealth of attractions and shops, restaurants and tea rooms, or simply the space for you to enjoy some tranquil time by the River Windrush, spanned by its five arched bridges.

Bourton-on-the-Water’s most prized feature is its tranquil river. Fed from many springs, its source is approximately ten miles from the village, and even in the 1976 drought, the flow continued. Where the river enters the village centre, over the rapids next to the Old Mill, its clear waters flow under a miscellany of arched stone bridges past the green with its banks of Cotswold stone.

The earliest evidence of a Christian presence in Bourton-on-the-Water goes back as far as 709 AD, when a wooden church was built on land donated by the local king, centred to the Abbey of Evesham. Today the parish Church remains the focus of a lively worshipping community in the village of Bourton-on-the-Water, extending a warm welcome to visitors.

London Victoria Train Station - Your Experience will finish outside London Victoria Train Station, centrally located and easily accessible by national rail and underground; it is serviced by the Victoria, District and Circle Lines and is in Travel Zone 1.

11 Best Cotswolds Tour from London Options and Top Tips

By: Author Amanda OBrien

Posted on Last updated: 17/02/2024

The Cotswolds is a stunning region only 100 miles from London. It covers palaces, oh so cute honey-coloured stone houses, market towns, green hedges, winding roads and is essentially the England of Hollywood movies.

Indeed many films and tv shows have been shot in the Cotswolds – including Downton Abbey. The close proximity makes it super easy to take a Cotswolds Tour from London.

A Cotswolds day tour from London is the most common type but I do encourage you to also consider spending the night in this beautiful area to allow for more exploration.

Here is my complete guide on Cotswolds Tours from London.

Cotswolds Tour from London – What are the Options?

The Cotswolds covers a big area – almost 800 square miles. The single largest town in the Cotswolds is Cirencester. However, the key things to visit in the Cotswolds are its charming villages.

There are market towns such as Cirencester, Tetbury, Stroud and Tewkesbury. The cutest towns are Stow on the Wold, Upper Slaughter, Lower Slaughter, Bourton on the Water, Chipping Norton and Chipping Campden.

In the Cotswolds Hills, the two main towns are Painswick and Snowshill. Most of the tours of the Cotswolds from London visit some of these cute towns.

They also tend to include several options for stops along the way in Oxford, Stratford Upon Avon, Warwick Castle and Blenheim Palace.

If you’re a Downton Abbey fan there are also Cotswold tours that focus on where the exteriors were shot for the series.

The other option is a Bath and Cotswolds Tour from London which also includes Stonehenge.

Which town/village is best in the Cotswolds for a weekend away?

If you are looking for a weekend away in the Cotswolds I would highly recommend staying at the lovely Bruern Cottages near Kingham . This area is a fantastic base for visiting the towns of the Cotswolds such as Stow-on-the-Wold, Burford and Chipping Norton.

The cottages are literally in the middle of the Cotswolds so there is easy access to all the key towns.

Michael Paul Holidays is a Bristol-based online holiday property agency. They have a fantastic range of four and five stars rated self-catering accommodation that includes cottages, lodges, and log cabins.

Their phone operators have stayed at or have great knowledge of all their accommodation – this is great for getting advice.

Every property they have listed has been personally visited so you can be confident that all their properties are of high quality.

Bruern Cottages

Bruern Stables were built in 1882 to accommodate the needs of Bruern Abbey, which is across the road. In 1947 the entire estate was purchased by Michael Astor and his wife Nancy.

The process of turning the stables into 12 luxury self-catering cottages began in 1993. Unlike many luxury cottage rentals, it is possible to stay at Bruern Cottages for just 2 nights or more.

The majority of cottages require a one-week minimum stay – this makes Bruern perfect for a weekend away.

The Stables

The converted stables at Bruern Cottages are beautiful. The exterior features the beautiful honeyed stone look of the Cotswolds.

Once inside each cottage is uniquely furnished in a boutique luxury style that feels incredibly comfortable. Farrow and Ball have provided most of the paint and the fabrics of many well known British designers are used.

Most of the antiques and furniture have been locally sourced. If you enjoy antiques do ask the owners for their local list of hot spots.

I was delighted to find one of my favourite brands, Elemis, in the bathrooms. Plus towels, robes etc all supplied by another favourite The White Company.

Aintree and Sandown Cottages

A group of 6 of us stayed across Aintree and Sandown Cottages. The cottages are literally attached to each other which makes it super easy to have your own space as well as spending time with friends.

Both cottages have large kitchens. Sandown has a large open area for the kitchen and living room areas.

Upstairs at Aintree are beautifully furnished bedrooms – a large master double and then two twins with bathrooms. Sandown has a double bedroom and ensuite on the ground floor and twin room upstairs.

Without question, my favourite part of both cottages was the living areas. Bruern Cottages have done a wonderful job making these living areas so comfortable yet stylish.

Once you sit down it is hard to imagine leaving. I simply craved poor weather so I could justify sitting on the couch and popping on the tv (which comes with full Sky to keep everyone happy).

Eating at Bruern Cottages

The cottages are self-catering but Bruern knows that often when you arrive at a cottage you haven’t had time to get to a store. They provide a fantastic welcome pack that is stocked with local products.

Salted butter, fresh eggs, cheese, local bacon and sausages, cake and even bubbles (or wine. It was such a wonderful package to receive on arrival.

Bruern Facilities

Bruern caters for literally everyone. I can imagine a romantic weekend here with a partner as much as I can imagine a multi-generational family. The cottages themselves have full wifi, sky etc for teenagers.

The outdoor areas are perfect for younger kids and running around. There is an entire play area kitted out with toys outside the fantastic spa and gym area.

Sign to the Spa at Bruern Cottages

The indoor pool is heated so it is ready to be used no matter what the weather. For warmer days there is a lovely outdoor area with sun loungers.

The spa area also has treatment rooms and Bruern Cottages can organise massages, facials etc if booked in advance. And the gym has the latest equipment.

No wonder Bruern Cottages is so often full of repeat customers.

Something Special:

Great Deals if you are making your own way to the Cotswolds from London

There are some fantastic UK City and Sightseeing passes which offer free entry to all must-see attractions & great deals.

How do I get to the Cotswolds?

If you’re coming from outside the UK then London is the best place to fly into for the Cotswolds. Option one is to stay in London and then take one of the Cotswolds day tour from London options above.

Option two is taking a Cotswolds day trip from London by train. Paddington is the key station for trains to the Cotswolds – some great value options for UK rail passes are listed below.

Typical Cotswolds cottage at twilight

Option three is hiring a car and driving yourself to the Cotswolds. Heathrow is a great place to pick up a hire car for the Cotswolds. Heathrow is the closest airport to the Cotswolds.

Also, picking up the car at Heathrow means you will avoid central London traffic which is always a good idea.

Best Ways to get from the Airport into London

London has several airports. It can be confusing and expensive to get from each of the airports into central London. And the last thing you need after a flight. It is much easier to organize tickets before you fly.

Heathrow is the most common airport for international flights. The fastest way to get from Heathrow into Central London is the Heathrow Express . This train only takes 15 minutes to get from Heathrow to Paddington Station and runs 4 times an hour. The Heathrow Express is much faster than a cab or any other option.

682788a1488748faad22a631d86f24a6

There is also a bus or coach option which drops passengers at Victoria Station. This is a cheap option but you will have to deal with London traffic. If you are taking this option during peak hour it could take up to 2 hours each way.

682788a1488748faad22a631d86f24a6

The lowest cost way to get from Heathrow to central London is the tube . The tube is actually one of the fastest options as well – and will get you the closest to your final destination.

682788a1488748faad22a631d86f24a6

Gatwick Airport is south of London and can be quite the distance in a car. The Gatwick Express is the fastest option into London and runs directly from Gatwick to Victoria Station.

The Great Northern Hotel is ridiculously close to Kings Cross and St Pancras stations which is incredibly convenient. The hotel dates back to 1854 but has had a major refurb so it feels fresh and modern.

The Hoxton hotel is in the heart of East London in Shoreditch and a perfect base for exploration. The rooms aren’t huge but the location makes up for it – as does the great value for London with rooms starting at £99 a night.

Great Deals for those visiting London from outside the UK

Visit Great Britain has some fantastic offers that are just for those who live outside the UK. It is possible to make significant savings if you book certain things before you travel – not to mention how much easier it is to already have tickets for things when you arrive.

Cotswolds Private Tour from London

tour of cotswolds from london

Our Cotswolds private tours from London are the perfect way to explore one of the most beautiful regions of England. Our fully customizable trips include transportation and an experienced guide. Explore some of the best places in the region and see the spectacular countryside. Spend the whole day visiting typical Cotswolds villages such as Burford, Boughton-on-the-water and Stow-on-the-Wold. Another popular option is to combine a few of the Cotswolds villages with a visit to other nearby places such as Oxford, Stratford-upon-Avon or Blenheim Palace. We can pick up from any hotel in Central London and have a range of small, medium and large vehicles to accommodate your group size.

Cotswolds Private Tour Itinerary – 1 Day

tour of cotswolds from london

Cotswold Village

This is our suggested itinerary for a Cotswolds private tour from London. We begin with a visit to Burford, known as the “Gateway to the Cotswolds”. This pretty medieval town features a medieval bridge, old stone houses and attractive Tudor and Georgian frontages. We will walk along the sweeping high street with lots of antique shops and tea rooms.

We continue our drive into the English countryside, along twisty roads and passing farmland and rolling green hills. We arrive in Bibury, described by William Morris as “the most beautiful village in England”, with picture-postcard houses dotting the landscape. We can stop for lunch in one of the many traditional pubs in the area.

We’ll begin the afternoon with a visit to Bourton-on-the-Water, nicknamed “Venice of the Cotswolds”. See the bridges that cross the stream that runs through the centre of the town. On either side, you’ll find antique shops, cafes and restaurants. And just a short drive away lies Stow-on-the-Wold, a market town that was once a centre for the wool industry. As you walk around, you’ll notice lots of honey-coloured stone buildings and interesting independent shops. From here, we return to London.

Private Tour of Cotswolds & other places:

The Magnificent Stately Home of Blenheim Palace

We can combine a visit to the Cotswolds with other locations. Spend the morning visiting a few villages in the Cotswolds and in the afternoon visit one of the following places:

  • Blenheim Palace, one of the finest country houses in England and a UNESCO World Heritage site. This is where Sir Winston Churchill was born and is the principal residence of the Dukes of Marlborough. Explore the State Rooms, gardens and Winston Churchill exhibits.
  • Oxford, a city famous for its world-class university and inspiring architecture. Stroll around the beautiful Oxford colleges and admire the city’s impressive dreaming spires. Oxford was also used as a filming location in many of the early Harry Potter movies.
  • Stratford-upon-Avon, the birthplace of William Shakespeare. This pretty town is perched on the River Avon. Visit the houses associated with the life of this literary giant.

We can also offer a private version of our Cotswolds group tours that depart regularly from London.

Downton Abbey Private Tour

Highclere Castle, the location of Downton Abbey

Highclere Castle, the location of Downton Abbey

The Cotswolds is an area of unspoilt countryside and picture-postcard villages that feels like a welcome retreat from the hustle and bustle of modern-day living. This made it a perfect filming location for the making of the Downton Abbey TV series. Our Downton Abbey private tour will take you several locations in the Cotswolds that have become must-see places for Dowton Abbey Fans.

We’ll start the day with a visit to Cogges Farm which was used as Yew Tree Farm, home of Mr Drewe. We’ll continue to Bampton which is the real-life location of the fictional Downton Village. Here you can see St Mary’s Church, ‘Downton’ Hospital and the exterior of Churchgate house. Finally, explore Highclere Castle with is the main location of Downton Abbey. Located just outside of the Cotswolds, this country house is set in a 5,000-acre estate with beautiful State Rooms and Gardens. Please note that Highclere Castle is only open to the public on selected dates during the year.

2-day private tour of Cotswolds

Stay overnight in the Cotswolds on a 2-day private tour of the area. You’ll have plenty of time to explore some of the tucked-away villages of the Cotswolds and take in the beautiful countryside. We can also visit nearby locations such as Stonehenge or the city of Bath depending on your interests. There are many ways to enjoy a 2-day private tour of the Cotswolds. Over Cleeve Hill to pass the Neolithic tomb at Belas Knap and so down to Winchcombe, home to Sudeley Castle. Overnight Winchcombe.

Day 3: Winchcombe to Broadway (10.5 miles - 17 km)

This is a fabulous day’s walk. Follow the pilgrims’ route to Hailes Abbey (open to the public), then over the hills to Jacobean Stanway House, with its wonderful gatehouse, medieval tithe barn and extraordinary fountain. Pass through Stanton, so unspoilt that it has featured in many films, and arrive in the village of Broadway, one of the inspirations for the arts and Crafts Movement.

Day 4: Broadway to Moreton-in-Marsh (12 miles - 20 km)

NB Overnight in Chipping Campden can be included – please ask. Walk up to Broadway Tower, the 18th century folly, where the view is stunning and then it is but a short step to Chipping Campden, the loveliest of all Cotswold villages, and once the wool centre of Europe. Pass the old butter market, visit the fine ‘wool’ church, and perhaps the world renowned silversmith. Continue through Broad Campden and Blockley and descend to Batsford, with its arboretum and falconry centre. Finally, a stroll across meadows to Moreton, for overnight.

Day 5: Moreton-in-Marsh to Lower Slaughter (12 miles - 20 km)

You are soon among typical Cotswold villages with a detour to see gorgeous Sezincote if you like. Then it is Stow-on-the-Wold, complete with village stocks and picturesque square, down to Lower Slaughter.

Day 6: Lower Slaughter to Northleach (11 miles - 17 km)

The route weaves around Bourton lakes, then crosses the hills to Sherborne. Stroll through landscaped Sherborne Park and continue to the tranquil and historic village of Northleach, with its glorious wool church, mechanical music museum and air of timelessness. Overnight Northleach.

Day 7: Northleach to Cirencester (14 miles - 22 km)

Head for Chedworth with its welcoming pub (and nearby Roman villa, one of the best preserved in the country), before continuing to Cirencester, after London the second town of Roman Britain, with its excellent Corinium Museum and its majestic market square overlooked by the huge and recently restored parish church.

Day 8: Cirencester to Painswick (13.5 miles - 21 km)

A stroll through the 18th century landscape of Cirencester Park brings you to Sapperton, once a centre for William Morris’s Arts & Crafts Movement. Follow the old Thames & Severn Canal, and then walk through perfect rural England to Painswick, ‘Queen of the Cotswolds’, noted for its fascinating churchyard and the Rococo Garden.

Day 9: Painswick to Cheltenham (13 miles - 20 km)

Walk through the countryside immortalised in Laurie Lee’s ‘Cider with Rosie’ to Sheepscombe (which features in the book), which straddles an enchanting valley. The Cotswold Way takes you along the Cotswold Edge, with panoramic views towards Gloucester, the Malvern Hills and the Black Mountains in Wales. Overnight Cheltenham.

Day 10: Departure

Departure after breakfast.

This route includes the best parts of the Cotswold Way (between Chipping Campden and Painswick), as well as some exceptional villages and landscapes that are not on the official route, including Northleach and Cirencester.

Book Your Tour

There are different categories of accommodation available from B&B accommodation to Village Inns to small & luxury hotels. Ensuite rooms are booked where possible, in some B&B's a private bathroom may be necessary.

B&B accommodation is generally in guesthouses, often private residences where some of the rooms are used for guests. They are also often smaller in size than Inns or hotels. All of our selected B&Bs will give you a warm welcome with a hearty breakfast for you in the morning. Because these are often private residences, there may not be the facilities you would expect to find in dedicated accommodation establishments. And they do not generally have options for dining in the evening.

Village Inns are generally larger, they may cater for only guests or they may also be a pub which also has guest rooms. They generally tend to have more in the way of facilities and have some kind of bar or dining options and are generally larger establishments than B&B’s

Hotels are usually the biggest of the establishments that we use and are more dedicated just to accommodation than B&B’s or Inns. There is a wide variety of hotels in The Cotswolds ranging from small hotels, to hotels with restaurants, to award winning luxury hotels.
