An Insight into alwar Tourism

Alwar is one of the oldest kingdoms in Rajasthan. A mythological belief persists that this region was known as Matsya Desh where the Pandavas spent their 13th year of exile. It was founded in 1049 by Maharaja Alaghraj and was a part of Virat Nagar in 1500 BC. Later, Alwar was ruled by several Rajput lineages - Nikumbh Rajputs, Yaduvanshi Rajputs, Badgujar Rajputs and Naruka. Even the Marathas and Jats of Bharatpur have ruled the region, though for a very short period. Foundation of modern Alwar was laid down by Rao Partap Singh, a brave Rajput soldier who conquered the Alwar Fort. On March 1948, the state merged with three princely states - Bharatpur, Dholpur, and Karauli, and formed the Matsya Union. Like other popular travel destinations in Rajasthan, Alwar is also famous for its historical landmarks, which are popular sightseeing places of the region too. The large rooms which uphold the majesty of the bygone era and pamper you with modern technology are ideal for detoxification of body and soul. Few kilometers away from Alwar, Sariska National Park is a popular attraction and also known for its Jeep safari. Here tourists can spot animals like caracal, striped hyena, golden jackal, leopard, jungle cat, four-horned antelope. Bhangarh Fort

Bhangarh Fort

It rained heavily when I reached the haunted Bhangarh Fort from Alwar via shared auto and public buses. Since I visited Alwar during monsoon, we passed through roads surrounded by lush green mountains even as a gentle breeze was a constant companion.

The first place we visited here was a beautiful temple which was located close to the main entrance. From here, one needs to walk a little further to arrive at the main Bhangarh Fort. It is supposed to be a haunted place and it is said that ghosts roam here after dark.

It is therefore advised to leave Alwar early morning and after visiting Bhangarh Fort, return by noon or early evening. Bhangarh is one of the Top 6 Places to Visit Alwar.

Siliserh lake is a famous tourists spot of Alwar. Both locals and tourists visit Siliserh lake, especially during evening to enjoy the breath-taking views of the lake and the majestic Aravalli range of mountains from here. It is clearly one of the Top 6 Places to Visit Alwar .

The sun started to set as I stared at the turquoise blue water of the Siliserh lake. Tourists and locals also enjoy boating and sailing in the vast Siliserh lake . I enjoyed the view from a vantage point of Lake Palace Hotel near the canteen.

After sometime I had the food and soft drinks from the canteen and sat at the open-air restaurant overlooking the lake. The food tasted average but was still good. Siliserh lake is located near the Siliserh circle. Do visit this major point of attraction in Alwar. Boating in Siliserh lake is best thing to do in Alwar .

Alwar City Palace

City Palace, Alwar

Top 6 Places to Visit Alwar When I visited the city palace of Alwar , I was amazed with the grandeur of this medieval fort. Whether it is the large courtyard space or bird’s eye views from the roof, it impressed me as I didn’t have much expectations before arriving here.

A classic blend of Rajputana and Mughal architectural style, the Alwar City palace was constructed in the 18th century. It was getting dark when I visited City Palace. I wish I had spent more time here studying the finer architectural details. It is worth it. This underrated place is often missed by tourists despite being one of the top places to visit in Alwar.

Nestled in the foothills of the Aravalli mountains, it is also home to an artificial lake and a museum. City place is one of the Top 6 Places to Visit Alwar, Rajasthan. What might be a tourist attraction for you and me, is home to several Government offices today.

Yes, it’s only in Incredible India that Government offices run from heritage buildings like City Palace. City palace is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

City palace is free to visit. However, if you want to visit its museum, a small fee is charged. A stroll at City Palace is one of the top things to do in Alwar Rajasthan. If you have only 1 day in Alwar, make sure you include City Palace. It is one of the major highlights of Alwar tourism .

Moosi Maharani Ki Chhatri

Moosi Maharani Ki Chatri, Alwar

You can’t visit Rajasthan and not see a grand cenotaph. I have seen beautiful cenotaphs in Bikaner, Bundi and even the remote Ladnu between Tal Chappar blackbuck sanctuary and Nagaur Fort. However, despite having seen beautiful cenotaphs across Rajasthan, I am yet to see a Cenotaph aka Chattri as grand as Moosi Maharani Ki Chatri of Alwar.

Built by Vinay Singh in the memory of Rani Moosi, the wife of Maharaja Bakhtawar Singh, it is an architectural marvel. Rani Moosi was known for performing ‘Sati’ on the funeral pyres of her husband. The tombs of both the queen and King are located within the Chatri Top 6 Places to Visit Alwar.

It offers great views of the fort, palace and the lake. Beautiful carvings, liberal use of marble and awe-inspiring architecture makes it larger than life. But then, Indians never built anything small ever! Moosi Maharani Ki Chatri is located in Mohalla Ladiya, right outside the main palace of Alwar and the lake.

Sariska Wildlife Sanctuary

Sariska Tiger Reserve

Alwar is also known for its top wildlife destination known as Sariska Tiger Reserve . Some people also call it Sariska National Park or Sariska wildlife sanctuary. It is famous as the home of Royal Bengal tiger in their natural habitat Top 6 Places to Visit Alwar.

Other animals that live inside Sariska Tiger reserve are Hanuman Langur, Rhesus monkey, wild dogs, wild boar, Cheetal, 4 horned antelope, Nilgai, Sambar deer, Chinkara, Chausingha, Jungle Cats etc. What’s more? Even the rare Indian Eagle Owl is found here.

Sprawling on an area of 866 square kilometres, Sariska is a must visit place near Alwar. As is common in many wildlife destinations of India, you can also visit many historical Hindu temples inside the forests. These medieval temples belong to the Garh-Rajor aand were built between 10th and 11th century C.E. Some tourists also enjoy trekking in the sanctuary.

The landscape of Sariska Tiger Reserve is punctuated with open grasslands, rocky outcrops and cliffs. The forest type of Sariska is dry deciduous. This offbeat wildlife haven is worth a visit. It is in fact one of the jewels of Alwar Tourism and one of my favorite Top 6 Places to Visit Alwar.

Israel Planted Explosives in Pagers Sold to Hezbollah, Officials Say

Small amounts of explosive were implanted in beepers that Hezbollah had ordered from a Taiwanese company, according to American and other officials briefed on the operation.

By Sheera Frenkel and Ronen Bergman

  • Published Sept. 17, 2024 Updated Sept. 18, 2024, 6:16 a.m. ET

Israel carried out its operation against Hezbollah on Tuesday by hiding explosive material within a new batch of Taiwanese-made pagers imported into Lebanon, according to American and other officials briefed on the operation.

The pagers, which Hezbollah had ordered from Gold Apollo in Taiwan, had been tampered with before they reached Lebanon, according to some of the officials. Most were the company’s AR924 model, though three other Gold Apollo models were also included in the shipment.

The explosive material, as little as one to two ounces, was implanted next to the battery in each pager, two of the officials said. A switch was also embedded that could be triggered remotely to detonate the explosives.

At 3:30 p.m. in Lebanon, the pagers received a message that appeared as though it was coming from Hezbollah’s leadership, two of the officials said. Instead, the message activated the explosives. Lebanon’s health minister told state media at least 11 people were killed and more than 2,700 injured.

The devices were programmed to beep for several seconds before exploding, according to three of the officials.

The American and other officials spoke on the condition of anonymity given the sensitive nature of the operation.

Hezbollah has accused Israel of orchestrating the attack but has described limited details of its understanding of the operation. Israel has not commented on the attack, nor said it was behind it.

On Wednesday, Gold Apollo sought to distance itself from the devices used in the attack, saying that they had been made by another manufacturer, B.A.C. Consulting, which Gold Apollo said had an address in Budapest and made the pagers under a license. Efforts to contact B.A.C. were not immediately successful, and calls to a number listed on its website rang unanswered.

Independent cybersecurity experts who have studied footage of the attacks said it was clear that the strength and speed of the explosions were caused by a type of explosive material.

“These pagers were likely modified in some way to cause these types of explosions — the size and strength of the explosion indicates it was not just the battery,” said Mikko Hypponen, a research specialist at the software company WithSecure and a cybercrime adviser to Europol.

Keren Elazari, an Israeli cybersecurity analyst and researcher at Tel Aviv University, said the attacks had targeted Hezbollah where they were most vulnerable.

Earlier this year, Hezbollah’s leader, Hassan Nasrallah, strictly limited the use of cellphones, which he saw as increasingly vulnerable to Israeli surveillance, according to some of the officials as well as security experts.

“This attack hit them in their Achilles’ heel because they took out a central means of communication,” Ms. Elazari said. “We have seen these types of devices, pagers, targeted before but not in an attack this sophisticated.”

Over 3,000 pagers were ordered from the Gold Apollo company in Taiwan, said several of the officials. Hezbollah distributed the pagers to their members throughout Lebanon, with some reaching Hezbollah allies in Iran and Syria. Israel’s attack affected the pagers that were switched on and receiving messages.

It remained unclear on Tuesday precisely when the pagers were ordered and when they arrived in Lebanon.

Pontins holiday park future decision demanded with tourism fears

Brean Sands Holiday Centre is currently being used to house Hinkley Point C workers

A Somerset MP is urging the government's planning inspectors to provide clarity on the future of a popular holiday park. The Brean Sands holiday park on South Road in Brean was run by Pontins, and one of the main employers in the village until its closure in 2023 .

Since this time, the holiday park has been used to house up to 900 staff working at the Hinkley Point C construction site, with EDF Energy securing a three-lease lease from Pontins' parent company, Britannia. Discover Brean, which represents numerous local businesses, lodged an appeal against this change of use, arguing it would have "significant" economic impacts and change the character of the local area.

Sir Ashley Fox, the recently-elected Conservative MP for Bridgwater , has now written to the Planning Inspectorate urging for a speedy decision on the matter to reduce "uncertainty" among his constituents. In the latter - which was published in full on his official Facebook page - Mr Fox said: "I am writing to express my concern regarding the ongoing delay in the determination of the appeal related to Brean Sands Holiday Centre.

"My constituents have been waiting for a considerable period, and the uncertainty surrounding this decision is causing concern. As you are aware, the Pontins site plays a crucial role in the local economy as a designated tourism site, attracting visitors and supporting numerous jobs in the region.

"The timely resolution of this appeal is essential to secure the sustainable tourism status of Brean and to ensure the continued economic stability of the area. While I understand there is currently a backlog of cases, I would like to request that this case be given priority in the allocation of an inspector.

"The longer this decision is delated, the greater the risk to the tourism sector in Brean. Residents and businesses in Brean deserve clarity and certainty about the future of the Pontins site."

Sir Ashley Fox MP speaking during the SEND debate in Westminster Hall

The existing facility is made up of 600 chalets, a leisure complex, a swimming pool, shop, outdoor facilities including play areas, car parking and ancillary green areas in between the chalet buildings. Under the existing lease, EDF employees will be able to remain on the site until at least 2026 - though this could end up being extended as part of wider negotiations with Somerset Council regarding the 'workforce uplift' (i.e. how a larger than expected number of workers coming to the site may be accommodated locally).

The Planning Inspectorate has confirmed that the Pontins appeal will be settled through written representations, rather than either an informal hearing or a full-blown public inquiry, and that a site visit was in the process of being arranged. However, they were unable to confirm when this visit would occur or when the inspector's final ruling on the matter would be published.
