Worthy Charities Where You Can Donate the Hotel Toiletries You Don't Use
Hotels throw away the bottles of shampoo, the wrapped soaps, and the other toiletries you don't use—but instead, why not let those items offer comfort to a person in need?
By Frommer's Staff
We all do it in hotels.
We all swipe some of those little bottles of shampoo and gaily wrapped nubs of soap.
When you don't bring a few of those products home, it feels like leaving money on the table. Sure, some hotels have moved toward large dispensers that limit waste, but at many properties, those little bottles are still available, and when you check out, what's left behind is usually discarded for sanitary reasons. So many of us grab 'em as we go, but forget to use them up, cluttering our own bathrooms.
There's a better way for this scenario to play out. Donate the loot (it's best if the containers have not been opened) to someone who will actually use these goods. The donation will be warmly accepted. As Amenity Aid (see below) phrases it, "Because of their size, hotel amenities are ideal for emergency shelters, other short stay housing programs, and community centers that operate soup kitchens and other social service programs."
Here are some options:
Homeless Shelters and Women's Shelters When people have to use these facilities, they usually bring with them very few items and are under great emotional stress. The comfort of having high-quality bath products is therefore both a practical blessing and has immeasurable spiritual value.
The Homeless Shelters Directory lists shelters in all 50 states, county by county and city by city. The website provides information on the types of populations (veterans, women, families with children, men only) served by each shelter, as well as the organizations' addresses, websites, and phone numbers. Contact a place near you to see if they take donations—most do.
The nationwide directory Women's Shelters offers the same types of information about domestic violence shelters, family shelters, transitional housing for women, and emergency shelters.
Green Drop The American Red Cross, the Military Order Purple Heart Foundation, the National Federation of the Blind, and the Society of St. Vincent de Paul all use Green Drop to streamline the donation process.
Along with clothing, shoes, blankets, bedding, electronics, toys, and sporting goods, Green Drop accepts unopened toiletries by both pickup and drop-off. On its site, there's a form where you can enter your zip code to find the nearest drop center.
Toiletries Amnesty Toiletries Amnesty describes itself as "a social, ethical and environmental organization working across the U.K. and abroad to relieve hygiene poverty and stop products from going to waste." It has now helped over a million people and diverted thousands of tons of waste from landfills. The organization has three outlets in the United States.
Amenity Aid This Rhode Island-based charity specifically collects shampoos, conditioners, and soaps to "improve the health and well-being of vulnerable populations by creating access to essential hygiene products." It works with 21 non-profits in the state, it prioritizes hotel toiletries, and it accepts mailed donations.

What to Do With Your Unused Hotel Toiletries
Whether it’s a business trip or a family vacation, life on the road is a common occurrence. If you’re like many frequent flyers, you’ve probably accumulated a collection of unused travel-sized toiletries from your hotel stays. Those small bottles of shampoo and conditioner always survive the trip and can take up valuable storage space if left unused. Rather than letting these items go to waste, breathe new life into your collection and donate them to St. Vincent de Paul’s Resource Center.
Each day the program provides showers, clothing, shoes, counseling and referral services for 200 people in need. The staff primarily serves individuals who are experiencing homelessness, as well as families.
Toiletries are a small but essential component in our lives that are often taken for granted. Soap, shampoo and deodorant allow us to maintain our daily appearance.
“Without basic hygiene items our appearance deteriorates and over time it becomes easy to lose one’s self-respect, confidence and drive,” explains SVdP’s Resource Center Director Cherylyn Strong.
“For an individual who is already facing challenging circumstances or experiencing homelessness, losing their self-respect and confidence because of their physical appearance can make the problem worse,” Cherylyn continues.
Travel-sized items are ideal for those we serve. Small bottles are space-saving and easy to carry—making it possible for someone without regular shelter to stay clean while relying on public restroom.
Unfortunately for our Resource Center, the need for these items is so great that is it difficult to keep our supply shelves stocked with hygiene basics.
SVdP’s Resource Center always needs unopened donations of:
- Conditioner
- Soap and Shower Gel
- Toothpaste and Toothbrushes
- Shaving Cream
- Feminine Hygiene Products
If your summer travel ends with extra toiletries from your hotel stay, consider donating these items and help others meet their basic needs.

Donate Travel Toiletries and Amenity Kits To A Local Shelter
Donating Travel Toiletries and Amenity Kits
I also have a large box of various amenity kits I have received in my travels. More than once I’ve gone through and pulled out duplicates and other items I’m no longer interested in. Rather than throwing this stuff away, I make donations of these items to a local shelter. While I’d love for you to support the Milwaukee Rescue Mission , I’m sure there are equally worthy facilities in your local area. The shelter I work with lists the following among their urgently needed items :
Toiletry/Resource Bag Items: deodorant—men and women travel size shampoos travel size conditioners single toothbrushes travel size lotions travel size toothpaste single women’s/men’s razors (preferably 3 blade)
Many of those items are in amenity kits already, so making a difference for someone in need doesn’t take much effort. It seems that people often leave partially (if at all?) used amenity kits onboard. Doubtful that shelters want used items, but do welcome unused products. While I usually bring the kits home with me, I’ll try to remember this next time I’m flying in a premium cabin, since I rarely use the items during the flight.
What do you do with amenity kits on flights and travel toiletries from hotels?

5 Places To Donate Your Extra Toothbrushes & Toothpaste
Medically Reviewed By Colgate Global Scientific Communications
Do you have a drawer stuffed with unopened personal care items? Extra toothbrushes and toothpaste can help people in need. Instead of hanging onto these items "just in case," find a place near you where you can donate them to people who need them right now. Your bathroom shelves will be lighter, and your community will be stronger.
Need for Personal Care Items
Necessities such as laundry soap, deodorant, toilet paper, shampoo, and toothpaste are in high demand for people in need. For kids from low-income families or job seekers trying to secure employment, not having access to personal care products makes hygiene hard—when it doesn't need to be.
Oral hygiene products, in particular, can help support the overall health of people without access to personal care products. Donated oral health products can make a big difference, especially for people who may not get to the dentist very often. For example, regular brushing and flossing can help prevent plaque from hardening into tartar deposits that require a dental visit to remove.
Where You Can Give
Donate your clean, unopened, unexpired personal care items and make a difference in lives in your community. But first, you need to find someplace to donate them. Read on for five ideas to get you started.
The Ronald McDonald House
Check with a local Ronald McDonald House chapter near you to see if you can drop off travel-size toiletries. It's one less thing for families to worry about when they're far from home.
The Salvation Army
The Salvation Army accepts unopened toiletry items at many of their locations, so check with your local group to see if you can make a drop-off.
Operation: Care and Comfort
Operation: Care and Comfort supports the U.S. military by sending basic hygiene and toiletry items to deployed soldiers. You can mail items to their main donation center or drop them off if you live near any of the drop-off areas.
Local Homeless Shelters
Local shelters often need donations, as well as support from community members like you. You can find homeless shelters near you by consulting the national Homeless Shelter Directory .
More Local Groups
Other local organizations that may welcome personal care donations in your area include food pantries, women's shelters, religious centers, veteran health centers, and disaster relief groups. "Buy Nothing,” and gifting groups connect on social media platforms to support their communities with items as well.

- Why We're Here
Rosie’s Place guests struggle to have the necessities they need to make it through the day.
We’re hoping you can help us meet the need for these essential items by creating care packages we can distribute to the hundreds of women who visit us daily. .

Frequently Asked Questions
Do all items need to be new? Yes – we ask that all items be new, not expired, and unopened. If you hold a collection drive, please check the items prior to including them in the care packages. Many personal care items – like toothpaste, deodorant, etc. – have expiration dates and sometimes an unwrapped toothbrush or used shampoo might make its way into a collection box. It saves us a heap of time if you check these dates on your items prior to packaging them.
Is it OK if I don’t include all the items listed in each care package? Yes – you do not need to include all items listed, but you should end up with a filled bag.
Can I include items not on this list? (i.e. underwear/socks/razors/mouthwash/etc.) Please only include items on the list when creating your care packages. If you receive additional items, check out our Wishlist to see if it is something we can use and how best to get them to us.
Can I include period products? Because not everyone using Rosie’s Place services menstruates and those that do have specific wants and needs, we hand out period products individually and don't include them in pre-made packages.
I’m unable to ship my packages to Rosie’s Place. Can I drop them off? Yes, you can! You'll need to schedule your drop off beforehand. Drop off times are limited to Monday through Friday between 9am and 5pm. If you are donating more than 100 care packages, please email us at [email protected] so we can make arrangements to have the proper equipment and staff to manage your drop off.
Can I include personal notes in or labels on the care packages I donate? If you or your group would like to make personal notes, we ask that you package them together in a separate bag and not place them in each individual care package.
What if everything doesn’t fit in the bag? Not all items have to be included in each care package. Please do your best to make sure that each item as well as each care package is properly sealed. We move around completed care packages for distribution and unsealed packages could result in items falling out and/or contents spilling and ruining other care packages.
Can I use travel size items for care packages? We do accept travel size items but not as part of care packages. Care packages are distributed to guests utilizing our Food Pantry – many of whom are bringing these items home to their families. Travel size toiletries are distributed through many of our emergency services. Check out our Wishlist to see the travel size items we are accepting.

Due to overwhelming demand from our partner agencies, Jersey Cares established the First Night Kit Program. Throughout the year, Jersey Cares manages projects in which volunteers assemble kits for domestic violence shelters, transitional housing facilities, runaway safe havens, foster homes and other agencies with transitional populations in need of hygiene items on the "first night" of their stay. As soon as items are received they are distributed to participating agencies.

Donating Cosmetics & Toiletries
Archived q&a and reviews, where to donate scented full size toiletries.
I received a gift set of scented lotion, body spray and wash from Bath and Body Works, but already have enough of these types of toiletries. They are full size and I'm wondering if there's an organization in the East Bay I can donate these things too? I'd love some recommendations! Thanks anonymous
You can donate them to A Friendly Place in Oakland. It's a shelter for homeless women. They also offer transitional housing and programming. They will likey use your lotion as prizes in their weekly BINGO games. The woman there will be very appreciative. We have donated many things to this organization over the years, and have always been impressed by the women who run it and the services they provide. You can learn more about them from this article in Oakland Magazine: http://www.oaklandmagazine.com/Oakland-Magazine/December-2008/Missiona/ Lisa
Homeless shelter to donate travel size bottles?
Does anyone know of a homeless shelter or place in Oakland to donate travel size bottles of shampoos, baby shampoos, powder and other types of hygienic products? I have so many I know someone can use them. Thanks, want to donate

Does anyone know of a local organization that accepts donations of toiletries (ie travel size bottles etc) . I have a lot and would like to donate them perhaps to a homeless shelter in the area? BPN had some older responses online, but I wanted to see if anyone had current info. thanks! Jessica

Check this out for your toiletries. I have made many donations of things to this charity Dear Friends of CalSAFE, So much has changed since last Christmas. I am no longer working in Emeryville and the CalSAFE school moved to the Fruitvale District of Oakland into the same building as Brighter Beginnings, on 27th and International Blvd in Oakland. The population of the school has also increased to over 40 students and for the first time have two teen fathers in the program!! They even have girls as young as 13. Berkeley Food and Housing Project is any excellent nonprofit that focuses on transitioning homeless to permanent housing. They have an emergency shelter that greatly appreciates donations of travel size toiletries. To arrange a donation, you can contact Anne Landsberger at (510) 649-4965 x 312 or email alandsberger [at] bfhp.org If you want to learn more about Berkeley Food and Housing Project, you can check out the website at bfhp.org Laura
I haven't worked at the Berkeley Women's Shelter for a couple of years now but I'm sure they will take your toiletries, and the personal size ones from hotels are best of all. The shelter always needs toiletries, towels, and linens. It's located at 2140 Dwight Way, just above Shattuck, and you should be able to drop off your donation at almost any time before 7 p.m. Nancy
First Presbyterian Church, Berkeley (corner of Channing & Dana) collects small toiletries for the homeless. When the homeless dinner is served, they can pick them up. appreciating all donations
Contact a local homeless shelter - they are always in need of toiletries that they can pass out to their guests. If you don't know where they are - call 211, the recently activited social service information network now in use in the Bay Area - they can give you the information. I can also recommend you contact GRIP (Greater Richmond Interfaith Program) in Richmond which operates a free lunch program as well as the only family shelter in West County - and despite the name, there is no religious requirement to obtain services.
try the Suitcase Clinic, in particular the General Clinic, which meets Tuesdays, 6:00 - 9:00 PM, at the First Presbyterian Church of Berkeley, 2407 Dana Street at Haste Street and here's their web site: http://www.suitcaseclinic.org/
I'm looking for an organization/charity in the East Bay where I can donate hotel toiletries, i.e. soaps, shampoos, shower caps, etc. Ideally, I'd like to find one that benefits women and children. Many thanks! Lynna
The Towne House at 625 Oakland Avenue in Oakland (94611) 510-658-9480 welcomes unused toiletries for their clients. They serve people with mental health conditions who are transitioning into independent living. Susan
I spent a year as an intern at the Berkeley Women's Shelter and they can always use hotel toiletries. They also take the larger sizes (preferably new bottles), but they really need the small ones to give out individually. The shelter is located at 2140 Dwight Way, just east of Shattuck, and you can drop things off anytime after 10am, except Wednesday, when they don't open till 12pm. Thank you for donating! Nancy
You can donate hotel toiletries to the Multi-Agency Service Center (a BOSS program) in downtown Berkeley. MASC is a drop-in center for homeless men and women. They provide over 200 free showers a weeek and they provide all toiletries and towels too. While participants wait for showers they can meet with case managers, health care providers, mental health providers, HIV testing, etc. Call Robert Long, the Site Supervisor at (510)684-7045 to arrange pick up/drop off. anon
Where to donate bubble baths, soaps, etc
I have recently completed my spring cleaning and have turned up a dozen or so half full bottles of bubble bath, body wash, lotions, and some make-up (eyeliner, shadow, lip sticks, lip liner). All of it is designer (MAC, Benefit, Origins, Bed Bath Body Works) and I hate to just toss it. Does anyone know of a shelter or other such agency that would accept glamorous but used toiletries like these? I would also just give them away to anyone interested if I can't find a shelter or womens' program in need. The whole lot of it fits into a small tote bag so it's not a ton of stuff. Thanks! nikki
''The Freecycle Network'' is made up of 4,356 groups with 5,070,000 members across the globe. It's a grassroots and entirely nonprofit movement of people who are giving (& getting) stuff for free in their own towns. It's all about reuse and keeping good stuff out of landfills. Each local group is moderated by a local volunteer (them's good people). Membership is free.'' Love Freecycle
Unopened hair and bath products
Hi, does anybody know of any women's shelter that can use unopened hair and bath products? As a teacher I receive a lot of these from my students. For one reason or another I can't use them and I'd hate to throw them away. Thank you.
The Women's drop-in Center at 2218 Acton Street, Berkeley CA 94702, (510) 548-2884 will take them: http://www.womensdropin.org/ Andi
