Bushwick Murals: The story behind Bushwick Art Collective

Bushwick murals are in the NYC borough of Brooklyn (walking the Brooklyn Bridge is one of the many incredible things to do in New York City ). When I was researching for street art in Bushwick ,  I got totally hooked onto the story behind how the Bushwick collective came into being. This 2012 initiative to adorn an industrial district with some of the best street art in the world was the brainchild of Joseph Ficalora , a neighborhood business owner.

The art is dedicated to his deceased parents and brings artists of all levels from all over the globe to make Bushwick, Brooklyn the ultimate street art destination ! None of the street art is permanent and stays around for 12 month or so at most. The Bushwick Brooklyn street art collection keeps on growing with new murals being added periodically.

How to get to the Bushwick art collective: Public Transportation and tour options

Bushwick murals can be easily accessed by public transportation or shared rides like Lyft. Since we stayed at the East Village Hotel in Manhattan   ( best value for awesome location aka right in the heart of the bustling East Village which is a culinary hotspot in NYC ), we got to the Bushwick collective   in Brooklyn via Lyft.

On our way back we simply took the NYC subway to return to Manhattan. Navigating the subway can be really tricky so here is a helpful guide on how to use the NYC subway . The Bushwick neighborhood is accessible by the L line to Jefferson street station and takes about 15-30 min to reach from Manhattan depending on where you are on the island.

Once you get there, you will be welcomed by rows and rows of gigantic   murals   created primarily by aerosol spraying technique which are all within walking distance. Since this amalgamation of Bushwick wall art is totally public, it is open 24/7. You can arrange for a Brooklyn street art tour  but I would encourage you to take your sweet time and savor the murals as you walk around.

A good 2-3 hours on foot should be enough to check off all the murals on your street art Bushwick list. The  Free tours by foot   is a good resource for  Bushwick street art tours , directions and transportation to Bushwick  art collective , street art artists info and handy Bushwick street art maps .

What kind of Bushwick street art and graffiti will you see?

The Bushwick murals and wall art will absolutely blow your mind away with their color, creativity and execution. The themes are varied and range from cartoon figures, to stark black and white imagery to subtle and not so subtle takes on the current social and political situation in USA.

Some of my favorite Bushwick street art included the “Diversity is Hope” and “Everything is not OK” murals as well as the naughty gummy bear arrested by the NYC police department (see collages below). NYC being home to the current President of the United States (you can see here this cheeky piece of work by Damien Mitchell, the celebrated Australian street artist who has contributed to the Bushwick murals) , I did expect the Bushwick street art collective to have more politically charged murals.

Nevertheless, I was pretty happy with what I saw and went shutterbug happy clicking the murals around me. I hope these photos that I have clicked help you on a virtual Bushwick street art tour ! We went to the Bushwick neighborhood in the morning (before lunch) and did not see major crowds around the murals at all.

As a result, I got a lot of great unobstructed shots of Bushwick  graffiti . My Bushwick street art map  is based on my location jotting during my self guided tour (scroll below to see) and provides guidance on the major streets where we spotted the murals.

These Bushwick murals were clicked using my Sony a7RII mirrorless camera  with a 35mm lens while the Los Angeles street art tour and Austin murals were photographed using my Canon Rebel T2i with a 50mm prime lens .

What else is there to do in Brooklyn besides the Bushwick Murals: Other

Bushwick street art tour is definitely one of the must do activities for any art lover visiting NYC. Besides this, there are a ton of things to do in the borough of Brooklyn itself as you can read on Time Out New York’s post .

Since we did not have much time, we explored the trendy Williamsburg neighborhood (another treasure trove of Brooklyn street art ) and had a delicious lunch at Reynard . Brooklyn is also famous for DUMBO (Down under the Manhattan Bridge overpass) spot, which is a mecca for all Instagrammers. If you do visit, go as early as possible and do not forget to stop by Almondine Bakery , a cute little French patisserie nearby.

WOW!! These are incredible! I was just in Brooklyn last month – I wish I had known to look for these. Next time for sure!

I went to a wedding in Bushwick in August and recognize several of these murals! The crazy thing about Bushwick, though, is that the art is always changing–my friends live right across the street from Roberta’s, and every six months or so when we go out to visit them, the murals across the way are completely different! So crazy to think of destroying something so beautiful to make way for yet another temporary art installation.

A Self-Guided Brooklyn Graffiti Tour

bushwick street art White Street to Moore Street robertas pizza l'amour suprim

Photos by Natasha Shapiro. Words by Arturo Conde.

Brooklyn has long been a focal point for established and emerging graffiti artists competing for niche spaces in which to exhibit their artwork. At present, local residents appreciate a wide selection of street art that peers out from walls, billboards and abandoned commercial and industrial lots.

Once deemed as a subversive act by many detractors, graffiti has evolved into a popular art form that’s gained wide recognition in international galleries and influenced marketing campaigns, graphic designers, and the fashion industry. And while London has replaced New York at the forefront of street art, Brooklyn has remained a fertile ground for experimental graffiti.

A thriving arts community, and the availability of public spaces have attracted a diverse cluster of both talented local and international artists that continue to challenge perspective through different artistic mediums. In recent years, graffiti in Bushwick has ranged from highly stylized texts and tags that are commonly associated with American graffiti, to more European-style street art, including poster-work, stencils and stickers.

An improvised tour of the area can offer you a substantial survey of classic and contemporary styles of artwork. On a recent walk through Brooklyn, we found four different types of graffiti:

Throw-ups and Pieces

Considered to be the earliest forms of graffiti, these elaborate representations of the artist’s name vary in size, thickness and outline. The use of multiple colors, and the speed and precision that is required to write them, have elevated these trademark signatures to a universal form of self-expression.

Painted by individual artists or collectives, murals can sometimes commemorate emblematic musicians, politicians and activists. With the influence of graffiti in advertising, some graffiti artists have also been contracted to paint murals for local businesses and corporations.

Working from a print of one or more colors that are later sprayed-over, stencils allow graffiti artists to focus on cultural icons that can be reproduced with precision.

Poster-work

Graffiti artists wheatpaste their poster-work on billboards and walls, sometimes actively incorporating their surroundings into the piece.

With the Brooklyn artistic community thriving, groups like The Bushwick Collective are changing the way that we view urban spaces. By gathering artists of all mediums from across the globe, the collective aims to create outdoor art gallery for street artists, creating an environment of inspiration and creation for Bushwick locals. Since it’s beginnings in 2012, the collective has spread its tendrils further across Bushwick every year, gatherings hundreds of artists such as Buff Monster, Danielle Matrione, and many other well known creatives. (Check out this video from the NYT about it! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=owZeE-AdRwc )

About Bushwick Collective

fun and colorful Bushwick Collective mural in brooklyn

The Bushwick Collective is a living breathing art collective in Bushwick, Brooklyn in NYC. This creative array of Bushwick art was conceived and created by Bushwick native, Joe Ficalora, with its first mural surfacing in 2011.

It has since attracted talented artists from all over the world and fabulously showcases first-rate street art by the creators. The genesis of this Bushwick Collective is quite the story, as the founder came of age in the 1980s, during a time when the Bushwick area was known for high crime rates.

Having suffered the losses of both of his parents, Joe wanted to revive himself and his neighborhood and thus transformed it into an open-air gallery for everyone to enjoy and help him cope with his painful memories.

What a testament to the power of art. Come relish at the Bushwick art collective, featuring Bushwick murals from some of our favorite street artists.

Annual Bushwick Collective Block Party

big ear and donut mural at the Bushwick Collective in Brooklyn

The Bushwick Collective Block party is an annual art event in Bushwick, Brooklyn. World-renowned local, national, and international artists are invited to showcase their creations during this community-enriching event.

The annual block party has been hosted every June since 2012, with the exception of 2020, and features new artists every year.

Just as artists line the walls with their colorful depictions, musicians fill the air with the sound of their live performances. Visitors should come prepared with cash in their pockets as the street becomes a massive merchant market for jewelry, prints, and custom clothing, designed by the various artisans.

There is something for everyone as this event ties together talented Bushwick graffiti, street art, music, food from trucks and local vendors, and of course, a wonderful sense of community.

Culture is contagious and Bushwick Collective’s block party has since inspired more Bushwick murals to pop up around the area – even walls that are not officially a part of the Bushwick Collective have been filled with colorful and vibrant works of art.

What’s even more incredible is that street art in nature is not permanent, and therefore fresh new murals are constantly being added annually – and in real-time!

Thus, this makes visiting the Bushwick art collective great year-round. Fresh Bushwick graffiti next to never-before-seen Bushwick street art makes for a truly remarkable experience.

The Bushwick street art collective brings about a wide range of artists, with varying talents and backgrounds. Some of the biggest names whose work either is or has been on display at the Bushwick Collective include Monks Art, Adam Fu, and Daisey Freedman to name a few.

Monks’s Bushwick murals are colorfully provoking depictions of wildlife that are often personified to take on comedic forms. Adam Fu is a Brooklyn-based neon wizard who specializes in luminous Bushwick graffiti of various designs.

If you like art that is a bit edgy, Daisey Freedman’s Bushwick art features spookily creative pieces. Below is a list of artists and their social tags for anyone interested in checking out their work.

Bushwick Collective Location & Tips for Visiting

tons of mini murals at the Bushwick Collective in Brooklyn

The Bushwick Collective is located in the New York City borough of Brooklyn, right off of Flushing Avenue. The best route involves taking the L line of the subway train to the Jefferson Street station. This is a great starting point for your adventure.

Once arrived, you are free to explore the walls of art independently or via a paid, guided tour from a local tour agency. While most tour companies charge a fee for their walking tours, some operate on a pay-what-you-like model like Free Tours by Foot.

In order to get the best out of your Bushwick Collective trip plan at least an hour if not longer to just mosey around and walk up and down the streets.

You can find most of the murals along Troutman Street between Irving Avenue and Cypress Avenue, there are more along Starr Street too.

As I said, it’s best to just walk up and down the streets, make sure you check both sides and peek around as there are some tucked away! There is also a group of street art around the block of Moore Street, White Street, Siegel Street, and Bogart Street.

If you are looking for a particular artist or piece of work, follow Bushwick Collective’s official page on Instagram (@thebushwickcollective) for additional insights.

How to Get to the Bushwick Collective

The Bushwick Collective is easily accessible using the subway. Visitors using public transportation will be happy to hear that the street art gallery is a short 7-minute walk from the nearest train station, located off of Jefferson Street (L train).

To arrive, take the L subway to Jefferson Street station, which is 7 stops out of the borough of Manhattan if you’re coming from this way. The L line can be picked up at any station along 14th Street. If you take 14th Street – Union Square station, the travel time will be under 20 minutes.

If you are coming from Midtown or Downtown Manhattan, the travel time is a bit longer at 25-40 minutes, to allow for the transition to a different subway line. Bushwick Collective is right outside the Jefferson Street station, so you will have no trouble finding a starting point for the walking tour.

The Bushwick graffiti will guide your path through the colorfully decorated walls. In the event that this route is not available (due to construction, weather, etc.), you may take the subway’s M line to Myrtle-Wyckoff Avenue station before heading to Starr Street.

Alternatively, you can also take the L line to Jefferson Street from here, which will take about a half hour or so.

More Bushwick Street Art

wolf Bushwick street art and mural in Brooklyn

For those who haven’t quite got their fill of Bushwick street art, there are more Bushwick murals by Maria Hernandez Park. This 7-acre municipal park is located between Knickerbocker Avenue from the southwest to Irving Avenue on the northeast, and Starr Street from the northwest to Suydam Street on the southeast.

Many more Bushwick murals can be seen by taking Knickerbocker Avenue towards East Williamsburg. Additionally, there are more notable murals that can be found around the Bushwick/East Williamsburg border, near the L subway line’s stop at Morgan Avenue.

Visitors will be happy to see that the vibrant pieces on display are not limited to the strip of the Bushwick art collective. If you’re wanting to see more than Bushwick street art, head over to see the street art in Williamsburg who also has a great scene and isn’t too far away.

Another option, a little further south in Brooklyn is checking out the many commissioned murals at Industry City in Sunset Park.

Nearby the Bushwick Collective

Biggie Smalls Mural in Bushwick

We recommend sticking around after exploring all the Bushwick art and murals in addition to the Bushwick Collective to check out the best things to do in Bushwick as well as enjoy a meal here!

Don’t miss the amazing thrift shops in Bushwick too if you’re into shopping second-hand treasures!

If you’re coming in the afternoon you also might want to stick around for the epic nightlife scene in this neighborhood.

Maria Hernandez Park

After your tour of the Bushwick street art and Bushwick graffiti, head over to Bushwick’s largest community park, Maria Hernandez Park, one of the best parks in Brooklyn .

Known as the neighborhood’s center of public life, this greenspace is always bustling with activities. Visitors may enter this park, nearby to the Bushwick art, at any corner as each entrance leads to a circular plaza, often used for events.

If you’ve brought the kiddos along, your best bet would be to enter at the corner of Knickerbocker Avenue, where a rainbow-colored playground with a large play area awaits.

Other areas of the park allow for recreational sports such as volleyball, basketball, and handball. There is even an asphalt little league yard equipped with a workout area for anyone in need of a pop-up gym.

For the furry friends, enter at Willoughby Avenue, where your pup can frolic through the large dog runs.

Bushwick Food

los hermanos tortillas in Bushwick

Bushwick art isn’t the only thing this colorful neighborhood has to offer. Calling all foodies – plenty of restaurants share the space or line the border of the Bushwick street art.

There are no shortage of new awesome eateries popping up and NYC famous spots like Roberta’s but what makes Bushwick’s food scene so special are all the influences from the Hispanic and Latin American communities that lived here before the gentrification of the neighborhood.

Here are some of the top recommendations for what to do in Bushwick for foodies exploring the roots of this neighborhood through your tastebuds.

For those who favor a spicy flavor, you’re in luck as there are plenty of spots with a menu for you. Tortilleria Mexicanas Los Hermanos sports a lively exterior that is darn near impossible to miss, and a tasty interior with fresh tortillas that taste just as good plain as they do fried into tostadas. This is also one of our picks for the best tacos in Brooklyn .

La Isla Cuchifritos offers a Puerto Rican cuisine, and yes that includes all sorts of fried foods, but we recommend the cucharitos.

Craving unbeatable tacos? Try Taqueria El Fogon , dubbed as the neighborhood’s taco haven. Visitors boast about their homemade salsa, which according to frequenters, is poured over just about every dish they serve.

Rico Pollo is great for the taste buds and the wallet and offer a Dominican-inspired menu.

If spice just isn’t your thing, don’t worry as the legendary Roberta’s serves up wood-fired Neapolitan-style pies in their garage all day long and is one of the most famous spots for pizza in Brooklyn . Visitors beware – the lines can be quite lengthy during the day, so prepare for at least a 1-hour wait.

What could be a more perfect way to kill some time than to scroll through your fresh camera roll of your favorite Bushwick art pieces?

Syndicated Bar Theatre Kitchen

If none of the prior food stops fit your fancy, consider an evening at the Syndicated Theatre for a dinner and show, located close by to the Bushwick art collective.

Enjoy old cinema and cult classics while you sip on cider and scarf down sandwiches, salads, and snacks. Be sure to check out their happy hour, which is Monday through Friday from 5-7 pm.

Whether you’re watching the show in their 60-seat, indoor theatre, or from their sidewalk cinema, their full-service offerings are sure to please. Visitors should know that while the indoor theatre requires prior reservation of tickets, the sidewalk cinema operates on a first-come, first-serve basis. Don’t wait, buy your tickets in advance before they’re sold out!

Tiny Cupboard

Tiny Cupboard comedy shows in Brooklyn

Looking for some laughs? If so, the Tiny Cupboard is an awesome Brooklyn comedy venue worth checking out and one I attend regularly! This underground/overground performance space, nestled nearby to the Bushwick art collective, showcases stand-up comedy shows on a rooftop venue, located on the border of East Bushwick and Bed-Stuy.

The Tiny Cupboard comprises a tiny art studio, comedy church, and that large rooftop space. The company prides itself in hosting culturally enriching, intimate events and those who care to share in this comedic ambiance should sign up for their email newsletters or follow on Instagram to stay on top of their upcoming events.

Those who wish to test out their talents on stage should hang around on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays, where open mic releases inhibitions from all who enter. Don’t forget to support the cause by grabbing a piece of their awesome merch on your way out!

NBC New York

New NYC walking tour aims to capture cat lovers and history buffs

"who knew that it was a cat that christened the brooklyn bridge who knew that it was a cat that saved brooklyn borough hall from burning down", by kiki intarasuwan and linda gaudino • published august 20, 2024 • updated 6 hours ago.

A new walking tour for friends of felines is replacing the "C" in NYC with cats.

New York City is rich with history and there are countless sightseeing tours and attractions to experience it, but journalist and author of " The Cat Men of Gotham " Peggy Gavan felt that the city that never sleeps was missing a crepuscular animal-themed walking tour. The Cats About Town Walking Tour was born after the creator of "Bodega Cats of New York," Dan Rimada, approached her with the idea.

Sitting on a bench at Walt Whitman Park, Gavan was adorned with cat ears on her pink New York Yankees cap, a fluffy cat tail keychain on her backpack, and a flowy skirt printed with punny, mock newspaper articles featuring cat characters.

24/7 New York news stream: Watch NBC 4 free wherever you are

"Who knew that it was a cat that christened the Brooklyn Bridge? Who knew that it was a cat that saved Brooklyn Borough Hall from burning down?" Gavan exclaimed as she talked to NBC New York ahead of her first official tour in Brooklyn Heights.

She had been writing a blog called "The Hatching Cat NYC" for 12 years, telling stories about cats, dogs, horses, cows and other quirky animal tales that she had found in newspaper archives. Gavan, a licensed tour guide, originally wanted to include all animals in her tour, but when cat-lover Rimada came in to help figure out logistics, it made more sense to focus on cat stories "because so many people love cats."

The walking tour lasts about an hour and a half to two hours, and the walk covers about two miles. Gavan takes the group to different locations where cats lived with a famous cat lover, or to a historic hotel, telling true stories from the 1880s through the 1940s.

Get Tri-state area news delivered to your inbox. Sign up for NBC New York's News Headlines newsletter.

"You can take 100 tours of Brooklyn Heights, the Brooklyn Bridge, none of these stories are going to be told. So it's kind of cool, especially if you love cats as much as I do," she said.

Gavan and Rimada share a passion for cats and New York City culture.

Rimada, an artist, runs an Instagram account where he shares photos and art of bodega cats. He had created it after a neighborhood cat that he loved had died. He created a sketch of the cat and gave it to the bodega owner for keepsake and the owner hung it up behind the counter, which got the patrons talking. Instagram is also a venue where he's promoting the Cats About Town Walking Tour. Rimada said he and Gavan are working on expanding the tour to the Financial District, Midtown and Central Park because there are so many more cat stories to be told.

One attendee on the first tour described the personal cat stories as an "emotional roller coaster." The tour concludes at the Brooklyn Cat Cafe where visitors can meet adoptable cats and kittens looking for a new home.

Don't worry, dog lovers. Gavan and Rimada don't plan to stop with cats.

Gavan is publishing a new book, " The Bravest Pets of Gotham: Tales of Four-Legged Firefighters of Old New York ," in September. It chronicles fun and touching stories about the New York Fire Department's beloved animals in the late 1800s and early 1900s --- and she said a dog-focused tour is in the works.

How a Subway Mosaic Artist Spends Her Sundays

Jackie Chang, who designed the mosaics at a Brooklyn subway station, spends her day designing in her studio, making Taiwanese breakfast and practicing violin.

Jackie Chang stands in front of a mosaic in a subway station that says “History” on one wall and “Your Story” on an adjacent wall. She is wearing white-rimmed glasses.

By Nadav Gavrielov

Jackie Chang was exiting the Metropolitan Avenue-Lorimer Street subway station near her home in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, several years ago when she heard a man in front of her grumble, “It looks like a museum in here,” with an expletive.

While New York’s subway stations are not widely known for their aesthetics, that station is notable for its expansive word and image mosaics that prompt passers-by to contemplate themes such as “History/Your Story,” “Faith and Fate,” “Truth and Trust,” and “Mankind.”

Ms. Chang, a 60-year-old public artist, educator and community activist who had been commissioned to design the mosaics, found the man’s comment amusing.

“I didn’t want my work to be seen primarily by a pretty elitist audience,” she said.

In the late 1990s, she made the initial mosaics that have adorned the station’s walls for over two decades, and she recently designed new pieces that went up as part of a renovation.

Revisiting the series for the new project gave her a chance to reflect on her place in the community. While Williamsburg’s gentrification over the last few decades has been extensively discussed , Ms. Chang’s subway artwork has been a steady presence for passengers as the neighborhood has changed around them. She said she wanted to “add onto it in a way that was fresh but also aligned completely with the works that exist.”

Ms. Chang lives in a two-bedroom apartment in Williamsburg with her husband, Joe Matunis, who is also an artist.

CHANGING NEIGHBORHOOD I get up on Sundays a little before 8. Either Joe or I would actually go out and pick up The New York Times. We used to go to the bodega just across the street, but that’s closed down. So now we have to go to the Rite Aid next to the Whole Foods. And I think this is also very illustrative of what’s happened to our neighborhood. One of us would start coffee, and we would have coffee on the deck. We have a very nice deck.

THE OLD COMMUNITY Around 9 I would go to the gym, the Metropolitan pool around the corner from us. It’s really important for me to be part of the Met pool because it’s the only place I can still see, like, the old neighborhood. So you see the Hasidic women who would actually be exercising in their skirts and doing their swimming during women’s swim, and all the old Puerto Rican and Dominican women, older women. If the disinfectant bottle is missing, somebody is going to be there to offer you some kind of homemade concoction to disinfect your machine.

However, during the summer, that’s not open on Sundays, so I’ve been going and doing my run. I start my run-walk at the Marsha P. Johnson State Park. I would finish at Domino Park. I remember when this stretch of Kent Avenue was waste transfer stations and there were, like, these wild dogs living in abandoned buildings, and you would see their heads poking out.

MOSAICS AND BREAKFAST Lately I’ve been really into Taiwanese breakfast — yes, it’s a thing. I like going to Ho Foods. That’s in the East Village. My husband and I, we would meet friends or our daughter, Maya, for brunch. If it’s raining, I would take the train, and actually would catch the train at my stop, Metropolitan-Lorimer, where I made that work . Once the work is installed, I don’t think it belongs to me in any way anymore. I just feel really lucky that I get to use that station and see my work.

So a classic Taiwanese breakfast would be soy milk. It could be sweet or savory. And then you dip this kind of doughnut thing — it’s called youtiao. And then I like having this kind of egg omelet. It’s a really thin, kind of chewy, omelet, and it’s called dan bing. A really classic Taiwanese breakfast I think people don’t really know about is a rice ball, or sometimes it’s a roll. It’s called fan tuan. I usually would have brunch with my friends — and most of them are not Asian, certainly not Taiwanese. So for me, it’s also a way for me to kind of share who I am. Brunch is usually around 11.

STUDIO TIME I’m home usually around 2. If there’s something I want to finish up or think about, I would be in the studio. The studio is on the first floor of my building. It’s basically underneath my home. I was working on the flip sign. It’s an electric sign that flips into three images. It is playing with words that sound the same but have different meanings, combined with images. So words like bread and bred, so B-R-E-A-D and B-R-E-D, or rite and right.

UPDATING THE CURRICULUM I teach two classes at Pratt. Next semester I will be teaching art, culture and community development. It’s not about acquiring skills to make art, but it’s acquiring skills, knowledge as to why you would make art, like how to apply it — not just as a decorative item to be sold on the market. I work on it up in my den. My studio is only studio work. I try not to get distracted.

PRACTICE The other thing I make sure I do during Sundays is play my violin. Maybe around 5, I’ll play for half an hour. I really love Baroque music. I like playing Bach, Brahms. I play a little Vivaldi, even though I think he’s a little bit too floral for me. I know he’s famous for his “Four Seasons,” but he gets too fancy.

ALFRESCO Then I will start dinner. I’m actually a pretty good cook. During the summer, I like not to light up my industrial stove, because it gets really hot. So I stick to making tuna poke bowls, pasta with pesto, tabbouleh, hummus, baba ghanouj. But I like eating outdoors on my deck, so alfresco dining is what I do. And often I will have somebody in the neighborhood, like one of my neighbors, come. When I do my cooking — this is something that kind of annoys my family a little bit — I listen to Pandora, French cooking music. My husband really makes fun of me.

BRITISH NARRATIVES After dinner, so like around 9, I always watch “Masterpiece Theatre” on PBS. I really like “Professor T,” which is a British remake of a Danish series. I’m always really curious about how the British portray people of color on their series. There’s a lot of escapism in British TV for me.

WYOMING I get into bed around midnight. I like reading short stories because often I can read it in one sitting. Right now I’m reading a collection of short stories called “Close Range” by Annie Proulx. It’s a collection of short stories about Wyoming. This collection of short stories is actually pretty fabulous. It makes you not want to live in Wyoming, by the way. And then I always do the crossword puzzle, usually The New Yorker. Then I go to bed.

How These New Yorkers Spend Their Sundays

A Subway Mosaic Artist: Jackie Chang, who designed the mosaics at a Brooklyn subway station, spends her day designing in her studio , making Taiwanese breakfast and practicing violin.

The Head of Luna Park: Alessandro Zamperla makes time for espresso and snacks while keeping an eye on the rides in Coney Island .

A Hotel Concierge: George Gaffney, the top concierge at the Beekman hotel, goes restaurant hopping for breakfast  with his family, then helps tourists find the best brunch spots.

Meekah From ‘Blippi’: Kaitlin Becker makes children laugh during the week, but on Sundays it’s her turn to enjoy herself : movies, fancy treats and museum trips with her 6-year-old son.

An Emergency Room Doctor: Dr. Alex Arroyo, a director of pediatric medicine in Brooklyn, gets to live out his “Star Wars” dreams , practice jujitsu and make a big mess while cooking for his family.

“Good News For People Who Love Bad News” track list

The 16-track album was a revelation upon its release in 2004; “GNFPWLBN” is an uncompromising vision that worked just as well for radio as it did critics.

As a refresher, here are all the songs that make up the record:

1.) “Horn Intro”

2.) “The World At Large”

3.) “Float On”

4.) “Ocean Breathes Salty”

5.) “Dig Your Grave”

6.) “Bury Me With It”

7.) “Dance Hall”

8.) “Bukowski”

9.) “This Devil’s Workday”

10.) “The View”

11.) “Satin in a Coffin”

12.) “Interlude (Milo)”

13.) “Blame it on the Tetons”

14.) “Black Cadillacs”

15.) “One Chance”

16.) “The Good Times Are Killing Me”

The Black Heart Procession

Formed in 1997, the jangly indie rock group fronted by Pall Jenkins — of Ugly Casanova fame — made their name with tunes like the wry “It’s A Crime I Never Told You About the Diamonds in Your Eyes,” plaintive “The Letter” and funky ballad “A Cry for Love.”

You can find their complete discography here .

We also sometimes recommend traveling by subway - it's fast and efficient (most of the time!)

Neighborhoods

Each of Brooklyn's top neighborhoods has its own unique vibe, personality and flavor. On a custom tour we can get a general overview by swinging through several neighborhoods, or we can pick just one or two to delve into more thoroughly. Certain neighborhoods are closer or further from others; when planning the tour we will provide advice about the best route to follow, and how to get around.

Williamsburg

Brooklyn heights, coney island.

Brooklyn's got something for every interest. Your tour can be crafted to suit one or two specific themes, or we can include a little bit of everything. Most neighborhoods are abundant with culture, shopping, food, views and photo opportunities. Your tour can be presented as an overall sightseeing experience, or we can delve into any interest or theme of your choosing. We're happy to offer suggestions!

Urban Culture and Lifestyle

Gentrification.

Brooklyn's overwhelming explosion in popularity is the product of gentrification. This phenomenon is a catalyst that brings new residents, businesses, cultural institutions and venture capital to formerly neglected districts. It breathes new life into forgotten brownstones, townhouses, lofts and industrial bunkers, fusing them together in a whirlwind blend of culture and excitement. It's a transformation that sees drastic increases in economic growth and quality of life options. It becomes a rallying call for artists, creatives, idealists and entrepreneurs to converge, collaborate, and aspire for greatness.

Gentrification also brings controversy and serious issues because it often results in higher living costs and neighborhood demographic changes (dispossession of longtime lower-income communities in residential neighborhoods). The severe issue is when gentrification takes place in an area that was not deserted or forgotten - only neglected by society. On our tours we delve further into this subject and examine the good, the bad and the ugly.

ABOUT CHASE ATLANTIC

Representing the missing link between woozy trap, nocturnal R&B, and psychedelically-spun alternative, Chase Atlantic blur boundaries of modern, Gen Z-inspired pop music by being fearlessly experimental. The band has amassed over 5.4 billion Spotify streams, and has received acclaim from Billboard, OnesToWatch, mxdwn, PopCrush, Alternative Press, Substream Magazine, and Rock Sound, of which they graced the cover. The Australia-born and Los Angeles-based trio — Mitchel Cave, Clinton Cave, and Christian Anthony — boldly push forward on a prolific creative journey while signed to Fearless Records. Most recently, the single “OHMAMI” hit an impressive 96 million streams in only six months. Along the way, they canvased multiple continents, headlined across the US, UK, and Europe, and sold out venues such as the Hammersmith Apollos in the UK (15,000 people, 3 times) and the YouTube Theater in Los Angeles — in addition to gracing the stages of Bonnaroo, Lollapalooza, and main stage at Reading & Leeds in 2023. They dropped the new single “MAMACITA” in 2023 and continue working on more new material.
