D’Angelico rolls out stripped-down Excel Tour Collection semi-hollows, featuring PAF-voiced Supro pickups

The new stable of workhorse semi-acoustics intends to nail the needs of the touring musician

D’Angelico may be famed for its big and boxy jazz guitars, but its new Excel Tour Collection – featuring a stripped-back aesthetic and custom Supro pickups – looks like it will have far wider appeal. 

The new Korean-built models include the single-cut Excel SS Tour, the Excel DC Tour and Excel Mini DC Tour, which have widths of 16”, 15” and 14”, respectively. However, the headline feature across all three models are the new Supro Bolt Bucker pickups. These have been developed especially for the Tour Collection in collaboration with the guitar-maker, following Supro’s acquisition by D’Angelico’s parent company, Bond Audio , back in 2020.

“Supro Bolt Bucker pickups were designed to offer the tone of the most sought-after vintage ‘PAF’ pickups from the late 1950s,” says Bond Audio’s Dave Koltai. 

“Scatter-wound, just like the originals, Supro Bolt Buckers utilize 42-gauge enamel wire along with a mixture of Alnico II (neck) and Alnico V (bridge) magnets to provide the perfect balance of warmth and clarity with unrivaled articulation and note bloom.”

A marked step away from the spangly threads of its usual builds, the Tour Collection sees D’Angelico becoming far more restrained in its aesthetic choices, but it’s nonetheless very appealing – with a sharp, vintage look. 

They may have gloss finishes, but elsewhere it’s all business, with laminate maple bodies, satin nickel hardware and Grover tuners. Some concessions have been made to style, with the 12” radius ebony fingerboards offering a little functional flair with their mini-diamond inlays; and an undersized Throwback Scroll-style headstock (which reportedly helps to offer excellent balance). 

Electronics, meanwhile, include a “50s-style” two-knob control setup of volume and tone, with a three-way pickup selector switch.

It’s a proposition that keeps it simple but seems to have cut very few corners in the process. At $1,499, they’re certainly priced to shift to pros and busy amateurs alike – we look forward to seeing whether it’s enough to tempt a broader range of players over to D’Angelico.

Summary: This 2022 D'Angelico Excel DC Tour, with its 16-inch-wide semi-hollow with deep cutaways and a lightweight centerblock, the DC offers remarkable sustain and exceptional genre versatility. No pickguard and 1930s-inspired diamond f-holes bring old-school charm. Supro Bolt Buckers are infused with old-school Supro attitude, utilizing an Alnico 2 magnet in the neck and Alnico 5 in the bridge to create the perfect pair.

Body: Laminated Maple top, back, and sides in Solid Wine finish.

Neck:  Maple/Walnut/Maple with a Ebony fingerboard, 25” scale length, 1.68” nut width, 22 frets, small diamond inlays.

Pickups/Hardware: Supro Bolt Bucker pickups, Grover 15:1 tuning keys, Tune-O-Matic bridge , stopbar tailpiece, ebony knobs, bone nut.

Cosmetics: This guitar is in great shape. It has light surface scratches on the body. The back of the neck is clean, and the frets show minimal wear. The back has light buckle rash. Overall, this guitar plays very well and sounds fantastic.

Playability: Our in-house guitar tech has inspected, setup, and restrung this instrument with a new set of strings. The neck is straight, the truss rod is fully functional, and the action has been setup low and comfortable. The frets are in great shape with no major grooves or divots from use and it plays beautifully up and down the fretboard with no dead spots or choking out.

The Excel Series Tour Collection contains new variations of fan-favourite models—stripped down yet undeniably professional grade. Built with the gigging player in mind, the Excel DC Tour is both exceptionally well-constructed and highly playable. It retains beloved elements of its standard Excel Series counterpart in its ebony fingerboard and sleek body shape, but features a refined electronics configuration consisting of a single volume and tone knob. All-new Supro Bolt Buckers provide a wide range of warm and crystal clear humbucker tones while 50s-style wiring retains top-end clarity as the volume knob is rolled off.

Representing a more minimalistic D'Angelico aesthetic, the Excel DC Tour features a Throwback Scroll-Style headstock with custom Vintage Deluxe tuners from Grover and small diamond fingerboard inlays complemented by 1930s-inspired diamond f-holes on its 16-inch wide body.
