Jeremy Becker Leads Poker Masters Event #2: $10,100 No-Limit Hold'em Final Table
It's been a record-breaking year for former accountant turned professional poker player, Spencer Champlin. Back in April, Champlin took over the top spot on Maine's all-time money list with total lifetime earnings of $3,100,000, according to The Hendon Mob . Champlin worked a desk job before turning pro eight years ago, and the road grinder says it's been working out for him ever since.
Champlin can add another trophy and six-figure score to his list of accomplishments after parlaying a $560 satellite into a win at the opening event of the 2024 Poker Masters presented by PokerStars NAPT . Champlin defeated fellow satellite-winner Jessica Vierling in heads-up play to take down Event #1: $5,100 No-Limit Hold'em for $160,475 in prize money, and his first ever PGT Tour cash and title. This was also Champlin's third-largest career score and fifth career six-figure score.
The 131-entrant field created a prize pool of $655,000, with the final six players guaranteed a payday of at least $32,750. Among those to cash were David Coleman, Ryan Riess, Alex Foxen, Vladas Tamasauskas, Chris Hunichen, Isaac Haxton, and Matthew Wantman.
Action got off to a quick start as poker pro Nicholas Seward was eliminated on the first hand of final table play. Seward got it in good against Champlin in blind vs blind action, but his ace-king suited would fall to Champlin's queen-three offsuit after Champlin spiked a queen on the river, sending Seward home as the sixth-place finisher.
After doubling through Vierling early on, Zachary Grech was eliminated in fifth place after his flopped pair of sixes couldn't fade the river ace of Dylan Linde. Grech would take home $39,300.
It was an unlucky turn for Dan Shak, who coming off a PGT Mixed Game Series win earlier this year, is still looking for his first Poker Masters win. Shak's tens were in great shape to double through Vierling's nines, but Vierling was able to spike a nine on the turn in order to send Shak out the door in fourth place for $52,400.
Tournament pro Dylan Linde started the day second in chips and would knock out Grech in fifth, but ran into trouble when Champlin's ace-four out flopped Linde's ace-queen in an all in pot, giving Champlin the double and leaving Linde with the low stack. Linde would go broke a few hands later when he shoved queen-six suited from the small blind, only to run into Champlin's king-queen offsuit in the big blind. Champlin would go on to make trip kings and eliminate Linde in third place for more than $72,000.
Vierling started heads-up play with more than a two-to-one chip lead over Champlin, and at one point would have him near dead after running his top pair of queens into Vierling's pocket aces. But he was able to claw his way back with some well-timed luck in a few key hands. One being an all-in pot where Champlin found himself dominated with queen-jack offsuit against the king-queen offsuit of Vierling. Champlin would spike a jack on the turn to stay alive, and after some volleying of the chip lead back and forth, everything came to a head when Vierling picked up ace-jack off suit in the small blind and shoved right into the ace-queen suited of Champlin. Vierling would try and return the favor, even going so far as to use Champlin's trick of "pre-congratulating" him, as he did to her on the queen-jack hand, but it would not work as Champlin went on to make two pair to secure his first PGT title.

EVENT RECAP
The Mid-States Poker Tour (MSPT) returned to the historic Deadwood for the 2021 MSPT South Dakota State Poker Championship at Silverado-Franklin Casino.
The $1,100 buy-in, $100K GTD Main Event was one to remember as a total of 585 entries (265 from Day 1a; 320 from 1b) were tallied, which not only surpassed the venue’s previous best field of 258 entries in 2019 but also became the largest major festival ($1,100+ buy-in) in Deadwood history.
On Sunday, 82 players returned for Day 2 action, and after it was Iowa native Taylor Howard , coming out on top to win the $119,165 top prize and his second MSPT title. His first came back in November 2018 when he won the MSPT Meskwaki for $89,939.
"Man it's crazy to hear you say that I just won a second MSPT," Howard said after his win. "I don't know its pretty insane when you think about it" he added.
"I grew up going to MSPT's praying that I could satellite into one of these events and now to say that I'm a two-time MSPT Main Event Champion, it's insane".
Howard's first MSPT cash came back in 2014 when he finished fourth in Meskwaki for $24,423 and since then he has accumulated over $250,000 in MSPT earnings .
Final Table action
Cy Church entered the final table with a stack of 4.7 million, well ahead of the rest of the field. Once the action got underway, it didn't take long before Tim Dunse dropped in ninth place after being outkicked with ace-five suited against Paul Camby's ace-jack off.
A few minutes later, Clint Lilienthal hit the rail after being tripped up on the river by Church. The next player to be sent home was Wesley Ismay , whose jack-six off came up just short after Camby flopped a pair holding ten-deuce.
John Nidhiry was next on the chopping block after his ace-jack off was dominated by Howard's ace-queen suited. Shortly after, Michael Kinzer departed in fifth place after his queen-five suited fell short against Church's suited ace-six.
Four-handed play went on for almost another two full levels before Camby hit the rail. Camby bluffed off three barrels with the last being an all-in bet holding an ace-eight off. Church called Camby the whole way down and rolled over an ace-five for trip fives.
Three-handed action saw Church and Howard hold almost identical stacks with John Schroer sitting at the bottom but ultimately, it was Church would find the exit in third place after he lost a race to Schroer.
The heads-up match was a battle with chips shifting back-and-forth between the two players for a few hours. Finally, Schroer got his chips in the middle after flopping a pair of fours and turning an open-ended straight draw. Howard called holding a pair of rockets and Schroer bricked the river, sending him home in second place for $73,201 while Howard collected $119,165 to go along with the coveted Deadwood custom trophy.
A total of 63 players ended up cashing the event, with Paul Jain (10th - $8,512), Phil Mader (14th - $6,809), Nick Pupillo (16th - $6,809), 2018 MSPT player of the year Aaron Johnson (21st - $4,994), three-time MSPT Champ Matt Kirby (24th - $4,142), defending Deadwood champ Sergio Mireles (25th - $3,518), and three-time WSOP bracelet winner Adam Friedman (50th - $2,123) among those finishing in the money.
The MSPT will be heading back to the Venetian in Las Vegas for back-to-back events being held June 2nd - 14th and PokerNews will be on hand providing updates for both Main Events.
