HARRIS-WALZ CAMPAIGN NEWS RELEASE:

Building off of the momentum of a highly successful convention in Chicago, Vice President Harris and Governor Walz will kick off a bus tour in Georgia on Wednesday. This is the first time the Vice President and Governor Walz will campaign together in Georgia.

The swing through south Georgia will culminate in a rally in the Savannah area with Vice President Harris on Thursday evening. Governor Walz will depart the state prior to the rally.

On the bus tour, the Vice President and Governor Walz will meet directly with voters in their communities, much like their western Pennsylvania bus tour which included stops at a local campaign field office and a high school football practice.

In Thursday night’s rally, the Vice President will lay out the stark choice facing voters in this election between Donald Trump’s dark and dangerous Project 2025 agenda and Vice President Harris’ optimistic and patriotic vision for a new way forward. The rally will also help to build the campaign’s volunteer efforts.

In the last month, Vice President Harris’ rallies have helped generate thousands of volunteer sign ups across the battlegrounds. Team Harris-Walz is running the largest in-state operation of any Democratic presidential campaign cycle ever in Georgia, with more than 170 Democratic campaign staffers in 24 coordinated campaign offices across the state.

Savannah is an economic hub in Georgia and is home to significant investments from the Biden-Harris administration, including historic clean energy job creation from the Inflation Reduction Act.

Campaigning in this part of the Peach State is critical as it represents a diverse coalition of voters, including rural, suburban, and urban Georgians – with a large proportion of Black voters and working class families.

This campaign swing comes after the Harris-Walz campaign released a new TV ad on Friday, airing across media markets in 8 states including Georgia, focusing on the Vice President’s economic vision and belief in building up the middle class, lowering costs, and creating an opportunity economy where everyone who works hard can get ahead.

Harris and Walz heading to Georgia as campaign seeks to build on convention momentum

Vice President Kamala Harris and Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz will launch a bus tour of southern Georgia next week, the duo’s first time campaigning in the state together and, as of now, their first public event after the Democratic convention in Chicago.

The pair will be using the momentum from the party’s convention to drive them into the last couple months of the general election. In addition to the bus tour, Harris and Walz are expected to tape their first joint interview next week and attend multiple fundraisers, most likely to take place in New York, California, Florida and Georgia, according to two sources familiar with the planning.

Following the tour, Harris will headline a solo rally in Savannah, Georgia. The trip will mark Harris’ seventh visit to the state this year and her second since launching her presidential campaign last month.

“Campaigning in this part of the Peach State is critical as it represents a diverse coalition of voters, including rural, suburban, and urban Georgians — with a large population of Black voters and working class families,” the Harris-Walz campaign said in a press release announcing the bus tour.

Harris and Walz’s visit will come as the Republican ticket ramps up its campaigning in the state. Vice presidential nominee Sen. JD Vance of Ohio held a campaign event in Valdosta on Thursday, following a rally by former President Donald Trump in Atlanta earlier this month. Republicans, too, have sought to capitalize on polling that suggests the party could pick up a larger share of Black and Latino voters this election cycle.

The southern Georgia bus tour is expected to echo the campaign’s bus tour of western Pennsylvania earlier this month, which included stops at a local campaign field office, a firehouse and a high school football practice.

Harris and Walz initially planned to visit Savannah during the campaign’s battleground state tour earlier this month, but they had to postpone the event due to Tropical Storm Debby.

Though it’s unclear exactly where Harris and Walz will go, southern Georgia is home to some of the state’s largest Black populations, including Dougherty County, which has the second-highest proportion of Black residents in the state. The campaign has opened field offices in the predominantly Black cities of Albany and Valdosta.

“The south Georgia region is a priority for the campaign: We have nearly 50 full time staff across seven offices in the area, including Valdosta. We have hosted more than 500 events in the region since May 31,” Harris-Walz Georgia campaign spokesperson Adelaide Bullock said.

Ranada Robinson, research director for the New Georgia Project Fund, said appealing to Black voters in both rural and urban areas will be critical to Harris’ success in the state, as it was to Biden’s victory in 2020.

“Black voters are the key to winning Georgia. Of course Black Georgians can’t do it alone, but we are absolutely the reason 2020 turned out the way it did,” she said. “Black voters had historical turnout, and it has to happen again for there to be victory in Georgia.”

Earlier this month, Harris held the second rally of her presidential campaign in Atlanta, an event that featured Megan Thee Stallion; the campaign said it attracted more than 10,000 people.

It then launched a mobilization effort in the state and now touts more than 35,000 volunteers, 174 staffers and 24 coordinated campaign offices sprawled across Georgia. The campaign refers to its ground game there as “the largest in-state operation of any democratic presidential campaign cycle ever in Georgia.”

The Harris-Walz campaign said it has recruited nearly 400,000 news volunteers nationally since Harris launched her presidential bid last month. The campaign refers to its ground game there as “the largest in-state operation of any democratic presidential campaign cycle ever in Georgia.”

Harris campaign chair Jen O’Malley Dillon identified Georgia as one of the campaign’s top targets, noting shifting demographics that could aid the vice president in expanding support from 2020.

“The Vice President’s advantages with young voters, Black voters, and Latino voters will be important to our multiple pathways to 270 electoral votes,” Dillon wrote in a recent memo.

Harris and Walz are also expected to barnstorm battleground states around Labor Day, before Harris focuses more of her time on debate prep ahead of her September matchup with Trump.

A Trump adviser said the campaign expects Harris will get a “bump” coming off the convention but compared it to a “sugar high,” saying they didn’t believe it will change the overall state of the race.

CORRECTION: (Aug. 25, 2024 2:05 p.m. ET) A previous version of this article misstated the number of volunteers the Harris campaign has in Georgia. It has 400,000 nationally, not in the state of Georgia.

ATLANTA - Vice President Kamala Harris and Minnesota Governor Tim Walz will visit Georgia next week on their first campaign stop since accepting the nomination, according to The Hill .

The bus tour will travel through southern Georgia, ending with a rally in the Savannah area on Thursday night, where Harris will address voters.

The tour marks the first time Harris and Walz will campaign together in Georgia, a key battleground state. The Democratic campaign is heavily invested in Georgia, with over 170 staffers across 24 offices statewide.

At the rally, Harris plans to contrast her vision with former President Donald Trump’s "Project 2025" agenda, aiming to energize volunteer efforts in the state.

The Republican's candidate for vice president, Sen. JD Vance, was in Valdosta earlier this. week.

Harris and Walz Venture Into Less-Friendly Terrain to Court Pennsylvania Voters

The Democratic presidential ticket went to the crucial swing state on Sunday to visit areas that are competitive and somewhat more conservative.

Before their convention this week that will signal the final sprint to November, Vice President Kamala Harris and her running mate, Gov. Tim Walz of Minnesota, headed out on a brief bus tour on Sunday to fire up voters in perhaps the most crucial battleground state in the 2024 election.

As they toured western Pennsylvania, their play for support beyond the state’s more liberal cities was apparent at the team’s first stop, a field office in Rochester, Pa., in the largely conservative Beaver County: Ms. Harris picked up a volunteer’s cellphone to speak with a resident from Erie, a northwestern city in one of the state’s swingiest counties, which Hillary Clinton lost in 2016 but Joseph R. Biden Jr. won four years later.

“I love Erie,” Ms. Harris said. “At some point we’ll get to Erie.”

Ms. Harris and Mr. Walz were joined on the outing by their spouses, Doug Emhoff and Gwen Walz, traveling in two new campaign buses from the Pittsburgh airport, where they arrived on Air Force Two to greet a small group of supporters.

The Pittsburgh and Philadelphia areas are the two main drivers of Democratic support in Pennsylvania, a state whose 19 electoral votes could decide the presidency. Recent polling shows a neck-and-neck race there between Ms. Harris and former President Donald J. Trump, with some surveys showing Ms. Harris gaining a narrow edge recently.

Mr. Trump is also increasing his presence in Pennsylvania: On Saturday he held a rally in Wilkes-Barre and another is set in York on Monday, while Senator JD Vance of Ohio, his running mate, campaigns in Philadelphia.

Both candidates have used their trips in the state to make attacks.

Speaking to a crowd of supporters outside the Rochester campaign office on Sunday, Ms. Harris appeared to suggest that Mr. Trump was a “coward” — just a day after he had called her a “radical” and a “lunatic” in Wilkes-Barre.

“Over the last several years there’s been this kind of perversion that has taken place, I think, which is to suggest that the measure of the strength of a leader is based on who you beat down,” Ms. Harris said — though she did not name Mr. Trump. “Anybody who’s about beating down other people is a coward.”

President Biden often preferred to campaign in Philadelphia, by far the state’s largest metro area. The city is easily reached from Washington and close to his home state of Delaware, nestled in friendly territory surrounded by counties he carried in 2020 .

Outside Allegheny County, where Pittsburgh sits, western Pennsylvania is less hospitable to Democrats, and Ms. Harris’s visit there suggests she may branch out more than Mr. Biden did.

“God bless them, they need to,” Nancy Cannon, a retired teacher who showed up at the Pittsburgh airport, said of the campaign’s planned visits. She described a landscape of Trump supporters, where she knew of Democrats who were afraid to put out their own lawn signs. “Maybe they would feel more supported,” she said, if Ms. Harris and Mr. Walz showed up.

Ms. Cannon said Ms. Harris’s swift ascent to the top of the Democratic ticket had given a jolt of energy to her family and friends. “I love Joe. But I am happier to see a younger person. I feel like this is an Obama moment.”

The trip points to the Democratic hopes that Mr. Walz can help the party reach working-class voters outside the big cities. The suburbs and small towns surrounding Pittsburgh resemble areas in Minnesota where Mr. Walz has performed well in his previous races.

One campaign stop on Sunday was also a clear effort to tap into Mr. Walz’s personal history: a football practice at Aliquippa High School in a former steel town with many Black residents that has struggled economically for decades. Mr. Walz’s own experience as a high school football coach has been a touchstone of the campaign so far, with Ms. Harris occasionally referring to him as “Coach Walz.”

Mr. Walz told the team he “remembered every single call” from his team’s state football championship. He and Ms. Harris were joined at the event by Jerome Bettis, the Hall of Fame running back who won a Super Bowl with the Pittsburgh Steelers. Mr. Bettis, nicknamed The Bus, was a surprise, if appropriately named, addition to the Harris-Walz motor coach tour, which also made short stops at a nearby firehouse, a Sheetz gas station and Primanti Bros., a beloved chain of sandwich shops founded in Pittsburgh.

“The way you win elections in Pennsylvania is literally going everywhere,” said Lt. Gov. Austin Davis of Pennsylvania, a Democrat who is from the Pittsburgh area. “Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, but all the small communities in between.”

Mr. Davis also said that Ms. Harris would find a welcome audience in the working-class region for the economic agenda she rolled out last week that focused on lowering the costs of everyday life and cutting taxes for working families.

Conor Lamb, a Democrat who once represented a congressional district outside Pittsburgh, said Mr. Biden had become well known to many Pennsylvania voters, thanks to his decades of service as a senator in neighboring Delaware, an advantage Ms. Harris does not possess.

Mr. Lamb said that the bus tour reflected the fact that Democrats had learned their lesson from Mrs. Clinton losing the state after focusing most of her campaign on the major cities.

“You can’t just do Philly and Pittsburgh and rely on social media,” Mr. Lamb said.

And he agreed that Ms. Harris’s economic plans would be popular in places like Rochester, a small town once known for its glassmaking factories that sits in his old district.

“Some of the things that she laid out in that speech — the child tax credit, extending health care subsidies — all that kind of stuff is just universal,” Mr. Lamb said. “That should do as well in Rochester as it does in the heart of the city of Pittsburgh. And I’ve felt in the past that Democrats were a little bit afraid to go on the offense in those areas.”

Harris-Walz to kick off 'Road to Chicago' bus tour from Pittsburgh Sunday

Vice President Kamala Harris and running mate Gov. Tim Walz will kick off a bus tour from Pittsburgh Sunday, stopping in multiple Western Pennsylvania spots.

The tour, dubbed "on the Road to Chicago," comes the day before the Democratic National Convention kicks off in Chicago, the Harris-Walz campaign told USA TODAY Wednesday.

The candidates' spouses Second Gentleman Doug Emhoff and Gwen Walz will join them on the tour, the first time all four are campaigning together. The group will focus on meeting voters in their communities, stopping at volunteer canvass events and local retailers.

This will be Harris' eighth visit to Pennsylvania this year. The tour is scheduled after Harris is expected to make her first policy-centered speech in Raleigh, North Carolina Friday.

Pennsylvania is a key battleground state

Pennsylvania provides 19 electoral votes (one less than it did in 2020). It was one of a handful of states that switched its vote from Donald Trump in 2016 to the Democratic Party in 2020.

In 2016, Trump won the state by less than 50,000 votes, beating Hillary Clinton with 48.6% of the vote compared to 47.9% of the vote for Clinton.

In 2020, President Joe Biden won 50% of the votes, beating Trump who won 48.8% of the vote.

Harris has already made several campaign stops in Pennsylvania, including her first appearance with running mate Walz. Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro was another top contender for vice president.

When is the Democratic National Convention?

Harris' western Pennsylvania tour comes as many others in the party are headed to Chicago for the DNC.

The DNC is scheduled for Monday, Aug. 19 through Thursday Aug. 22.

Harris and Walz make small-town stops and campaign phone calls on Pennsylvania bus tour before DNC

Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris and running mate Tim Walz gave pep talks to campaign volunteers and a high school football team Sunday

ROCHESTER, Pa. — Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris and running mate Tim Walz gave pep talks to campaign volunteers and a high school football team Sunday, with their bus tour in a corner of Pennsylvania serving as a modest, small-town version of the grand rally she’s expected to have at the Democratic nominating convention in Chicago this week.

Vice President Harris and Walz, the governor of Minnesota, were joined by their spouses, Doug Emhoff and Gwen Walz, as they stopped off to visit volunteers at a campaign office not far from Pittsburgh before continuing on to a firehouse and a high school in another town. The tour, in a bright blue bus decorated with the candidates’ names and the phrase “A new way forward,” also included pilgrimages to a convenience store and a restaurant known for its towering sandwiches.

Despite running as the sitting vice president, Harris told reporters she feels she has ground to make up in the race against former President Donald Trump , the Republican presidential nominee.

“I very much consider us the underdogs,” Harris said at a stop in the township of Moon. “We have a lot of work to do to earn the vote of the American people. That’s why we’re on this bus tour today, and we’re going to be traveling this country as we’ve been and talking with folks, listening to folks, and hopefully earning their votes over the next 79 days.”

Southwestern Pennsylvania is a critical part of a key battleground state that has long commanded the attention of presidential candidates . The state voted for Trump in 2016 and for Biden in 2020. Both Harris and Trump are vying to see who can put Pennsylvania in their column on Nov. 5.

Trump, who is counting on strong turnout from his base of white, working-class voters, is not conceding the area. The counties around Pittsburgh have shifted from Democratic to Republican in recent presidential contests, delivering for Trump in both of his earlier runs.

In a demonstration of the area’s competing politics, Harris’ bus and motorcade twice on Sunday rolled past groups of Trump supporters with signs and banners bearing his name.

At her last stop, the vice president answered a few questions from reporters, something she’s been doing with increasing frequency as Trump has claimed she’s afraid to talk to the media and made a point of holding his own news conferences in recent weeks.

Throughout their tour Sunday, Harris and Walz shied away from policy or much politics in their remarks, instead sticking to broad-strokes messages focused on character, perseverance and the future of the country.

Harris, while speaking to a group of supporters and volunteers outside a campaign office in the borough of Rochester, spoke about strength and leadership. She appeared to make a veiled reference to Trump, who is known for his pugilistic style and projection of a strongman image, when she said the “real and true measure of a strength of a leader is based on who you lift up,” rather than who they beat down.

“Anybody who is about beating down other people is a coward,” she yelled, drawing cheers and applause. “This is what strength looks like.”

Walz seemed to assume the role of his former job coaching high school football and told the volunteers: “Let’s leave it all on the field. Let’s get this thing done.”

The vice president next stopped at a firehouse in Aliquippa, where she met firefighters, petted the station’s dog and gave the crew almond pastries, before heading to a nearby high school, she and Walz met with the local football coach and addressed the team, who kneeled on the field to listen.

Walz again slipped into coach mode, reminiscing a bit about his days leading a team before introducing Harris. She praised the young athletes for their leadership: “Our nation is counting on you and your excellence. We applaud your ambition.”

She also told them, “Welcome to the role model club.”

Most polls, including recent surveys from the New York Times/Siena College and Fox News , find Harris and Trump locked in a tight race statewide.

Trump held a rally Saturday in Wilkes-Barre in the northeastern part of the state, following his earlier rallies in July in Harrisburg and Butler, where he survived an assassination attempt.

The bus tour marks Harris’ eighth trip to Pennsylvania this year, and her second this month. The vice president chose to make her first joint appearance with Walz on the ticket in Philadelphia on Aug. 6.

On Sunday, Harris and Walz arrived with their spouses at Pittsburgh International Airport, where they held hands and raised their arms together in front of cheering supporters. The foursome then set off on their bus to glad-hand with voters in the Pittsburgh area.

At a stop in the township of Moon, Harris popped into a Sheetz convenience store to seek out Doritos, her go-to snack. She later stopped at a Primanti Bros. restaurant, a famed chain known for sandwiches layered with coleslaw and fries, where she met diners and posed for a few pictures. Both franchises were launched in western Pennsylvania.

Earlier in the day in Rochester, Harris, Walz and their spouses spent a few minutes sitting at tables with volunteers and making phone calls to line up support.

Harris took a cellphone from a volunteer and spoke to the person on the other end.

“I love Erie. At some point we’ll get to Erie,” Harris said.

She continued the conversation and at one point said, “79 days to go.”

Walz, sitting across the table from Harris, hung up from a call, said of the caller, “He’s all in,” and gave a thumbs up.

Kristin Kanthak, associate professor of political science at the University of Pittsburgh, said Pennsylvania “is a state that traditionally has been super important, but southwestern Pennsylvania has been really kind of the battleground part of the battleground state.”

After Trump’s surprise win in the state in 2016, Biden flipped Pennsylvania in 2020 — and, in so doing, won the White House — in part by running up his vote totals in heavily Democratic Pittsburgh, the state’s second-largest city.

Trump has embraced protectionist trade policies and insists he is pro-worker. His vow to increase U.S. energy production and “drill, baby, drill” has resonated in southwestern Pennsylvania blue-collar counties like Washington, where a natural gas drilling boom has helped make Pennsylvania the nation’s No. 2 producer after Texas. Harris once wanted to ban fracking, an oil and gas extraction process, before recently disavowing her earlier position — a reversal Trump has hammered her for.

Bus tours like the one Harris embarked on in Pennsylvania have become a staple of political campaigns partly because of the free media coverage they generate. Such trips get the candidates out of their power suits and out of Washington so they can travel the country and score face time with voters in small venues like diners and mom-and-pop shops.

The low-key venues of Harris’ campaign on Sunday will be replaced with their polar opposite Monday when the Democratic National Convention opens in Chicago, offering a prime-time showcase that director Steven Spielberg is helping to choreograph .

Price reported from New York. Associated Press writers Michael Rubinkam in northeastern Pennsylvania and Linley Sanders in Washington contributed to this report.

Harris, Walz plan bus tour across South Georgia

Sam Gringlas | WABE

August 24th, 2024

garage bus tour

Vice President Kamala Harris and Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz will launch a bus tour next week across South Georgia, concluding with a Thursday night Harris rally around Savannah.

The campaign swing comes days after Harris formally accepted her party’s nomination for president in Chicago and as the ticket looks to translate the energy of a whirlwind few weeks into a sustainable force that can propel the campaign through November.

Georgia remains a critical battleground, with most polls showing a tight race between Harris and former President Donald Trump. A regular visitor to Georgia since assuming the vice presidency, Harris last campaigned in Atlanta in early August, not long after ascending to the top of the ticket. Since then, Democrats see signs the ticket swap has made Georgia and other Sun Belt states more competitive.

A previously scheduled rally in Savannah was postponed due to Hurricane Debby.

2024 Georgia Elections

It’s a critical election year, and Georgia is at the center of it. Stay in the know with WABE’s 2024 Georgia Elections page, where you can find WABE’s latest election news and podcast episodes, important dates, voting locations, candidate info, results and more.

While Democratic candidates typically focus energy and resources around metro Atlanta, home to the bulk of the state’s Democratic electorate, strategists and organizers say outreach outside of populous Fulton, DeKalb, Cobb and Gwinnett Counties has played a key role in recent wins. The state has significant populations of Black voters in smaller metros like Savannah, Columbus, Macon and Albany.

Quentin Fulks, the Harris deputy campaign manager who ran U.S. Sen. Raphael Warnock’s successful 2022 campaign, told WABE last week that reaching more corners of the state is a top lesson he is applying to this national campaign in 2024.

“I think Democrats have to go places where they don’t normally go,” Fulks says. “I’m not saying we’re going to turn counties we were losing 90-10 to places we are somehow now winning. But we have to cut down on those margins.”

That’s especially important in a state that President Joe Biden won by less than 12,000 votes in 2020, even if overall, large swaths of South Georgia have been a bulwark of support for Trump and Republican candidates. U.S. Sen. JD Vance of Ohio, the Republican nominee for vice president, campaigned Thursday at a donut shop and sheriff’s office in Valdosta.

Democrats also hope Walz, a former high school football coach raised in a small town, will resonate especially in the smaller towns and rural counties that characterize much of South Georgia — places that have traditionally been Republican strongholds. During a bus tour before the DNC across western Pennsylvania, among other stops, Harris and Walz visited a high school football practice.

“I know everybody looks at Atlanta as the African American mecca,” Albany Commissioner Demetrius Young told WABE in 2022. “But if you follow this blue wave in Georgia, it came right through Albany down into Southwest Georgia. We need to hold the ground that we’ve gained.”

Nearly a quarter of rural Americans were people of color in 2020, according to an analysis by the Brookings Institution. While the country’s rural population is shrinking overall, its diversity is growing.

“When people think of rural voters, they think of farmers, white people,” Albany State University alum Maggie Bell told WABE in 2022. “But really, there are Black people down here — Black people who want to be part of the election process, but they don’t get a knock at their door.”

  • Amazon has released a teaser video for the final episode of The Grand Tour.
  • It marks the end of a 22 year partnership between Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond, and James May.
  • The trio put Top Gear on the map and The Grand Tour ended up outliving it.

The end of an era is upon us as the final episode of The Grand Tour will air on September 13. When it does, it will likely mark the last time Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond, and James May appear on a show together.

The Grand Tour has been airing for eight years, but the team is more famous for putting Top Gear on the map. The show turned into a global phenomenon, before Clarkson’s infamous “fracas” put an end to things. However, in an ironic twist, The Grand Tour would end up outliving Top Gear.

More: The Grand Tour Will Reportedly Be Rebooted, Who Do You Think Should Host?

With all that being said, the final episode is called One For The Road and Amazon has released a new teaser video. It notes the trio have been together for 22 years and shows Clarkson saying “For the last time, here we go.”

That’s not much to go on, but the clip shows the hosts traveling across a desert and sharing numerous laughs. They also appear to encounter issues with their questionable cars which include a modified Lancia Montecarlo .

While the teaser doesn’t reveal much, the video is already a hit as it has been viewed more than 420,000 times in the first six hours. It’s also the #12 trending video on YouTube and is followed by another video featuring James May’s visit to Jay Leno’s garage.

From vasectomies to abortion pills, Planned Parenthood sets up mobile clinic near DNC

The NPR Network will be reporting live from Chicago throughout the week bringing you  the latest on the Democratic National Convention .

As Democrats began gathering for the first day of their convention , across town, Luis Ayala was getting something he’d been wanting for a while.

“I mean, it was a little uncomfortable,” he said, laughing. “I don’t think it was painful but it was uncomfortable.”

He was a little uncomfortable because he just had a vasectomy.

Ayala is 28 and works as an electrician. His wife saw a social media post about a free reproductive health clinic Planned Parenthood was sponsoring in Chicago during the Democratic convention, and suggested that he sign up.

“I have three kids and pretty much I wanted to stop having kids,” Ayala explained about having the procedure.

“That way I can focus on the three kids that I have and give them the best future they can have.”

His wife, Fabiola Ayala, says they wanted the procedure a few years ago while she was pregnant with their third child.

But another doctor discouraged her husband because he was in his early 20s.

“So I ended up having to get on birth control and I’m ready to remove my birth control and just get off the hormones,” she said.

Luis Ayala was just one of 10 patients who sought vasectomy care at the mobile clinic.

In this file photo Vice President Harris speaks at an event in Manassas, Va., Jan. 23, 2024, to campaign for abortion rights. Harris will commemorate her historic nomination in Chicago this week as Democrats hold their convention against the backdrop of a state that has become a hub for abortion access.

As Democrats meet in Chicago, Illinois' role in abortion access is in the spotlight

In a second exam room on the other side of the RV, Dr. Colleen McNicholas offered prescriptions for abortion pills - which she says patients could take on site or take home, under Illinois law.

Illinois, where Democrats control state government, has become a major access point for patients seeking abortions.

Dr. Colleen McNicholas is one of the providers meeting with patients at Planned Parenthood's mobile health clinic in Chicago, just miles away from the site of the DNC.

“It’s a great opportunity for us to show how when you have a state like Illinois that prioritizes healthcare access and passes good policy that you can be creative and innovative in how you meet people’s healthcare needs,” Dr. McNicholas said of the clinics presence near the convention.

Planned Parenthood purchased the RV in response to the Supreme Court’s Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization decision, which allowed most of Illinois’ neighboring states to heavily restrict abortion.

Meeting abortion patients where they are: providers turn to mobile units

McNicholas is Chief Medical Officer for Planned Parenthood of Great Rivers, which serves parts of Missouri and Illinois.

Providing abortion in the region means navigating a variety of challenges including security. The unit was set up inside a fenced lot, with several security guards on hand.

On the perimeter, anti-abortion protestors occasionally clashed with abortion rights activists who were on hand to support the effort.

Anti-abortion demonstrators shouted “abortion is genocide” as patients visited the mobile clinic.

“The truth is we’re used to that. We know that the services that we provide bring out folks who are in opposition,” McNicholas said.

Planned Parenthood parked its mobile health clinic in a parking lot with a high security presence as taking reproductive care on the road attracted anti-abortion protestors.

“But the truth is healthcare shouldn’t be politicized,” she added.

Still, in the current political reality, abortion is a key issue that galvanizes each party’s base.

In a statement, National Right to Life President Carol Tobias called the Planned Parenthood clinic “disgusting,” and said it was “not surprising,” given the Democratic Party’s support for abortion rights.

Meanwhile, at the convention, Democrats are showcasing the stories of women who’ve been affected by abortion bans - including a rape victim and patients facing medical complications.

The mobile Planned Parenthood clinic continues for a second day, providing medication abortion through late Tuesday night.
