Absolutely Amazing Tours and Owners!!! Awesome tour with Paul! Because of lots of snow we thought we would have to miss seeing Sequoia and Kings Canyon but an all day tour with Paul saved our trip. He was a wonderful tour guide, very knowledgeable, entertaining and showed us things we would have never seen on our own.

If 10 Stars Was An Option, That’s What I’d Rate It! Best tour ever! It was so nice to be picked up and dropped off at our lodging. He was prompt and so very attentive. We learned SO MUCH about this beautiful area.

This was such a great way to see the park, Steve was very knowledgeable, interesting and really enjoyed telling us the history of the park. Both my teenage children loved the tour and we saw things we never would of managed to find ourselves.

Very knowledgeable tour and friendly guide. My family had a tour with Paul who took us to Kings Canyon. It was a lovely tour, Paul was very knowledgeable and friendly, and helped make it a great day. It was well worth the money and a wonderful way to see King’s Canyon.

A perfect day, fun and sooo informative! HIGHLY recommended! It was just an all-around informative and truly fascinating experience. This all day tour was exactly what we hoped it would be.

Amazing!!! My family and I learned a lot about the giant sequoia trees and the national forest. The scenery was gorgeous and just truly breathtaking. The best was that our guides could go places that we couldn’t really drive to on our own.

Amazing tour in the middle of winter. Paul was a thoughtful and knowledgeable guide of this beautiful region. We were able to see sights that not many people see when they visit the park for the day and Paul (our guide) gave us a great insight into the park itself. Thank you for a great day! Would highly recommend to everyone.

Great half day tour! We thouroughly enjoyed our half day tour thanks to our guide, Jean Paul. He was friendly and knowledgable and made our tour a great experience! I would highly recommend this tour as there is alot of information you would not get if you see the various sites yourself.

19 Wonderful Things to Do in Visalia, California: Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks Gateway

Unique

If you are taking a road trip to Sequoia National Park or Kings Canyon National Park , Visalia, California, is the ideal base from which to explore as it is only 35 miles (~50 minutes) from Sequoia and ~55 miles (~75 minutes) from Kings Canyon National Parks. If you have the time, I also highly recommend undertaking the Majestic Mountain Loop and adding Yosemite National Park to your journey.

Use this travel guide to find 19 wonderful things to do in Visalia, California, including the best attractions, restaurants and hotels.

FUN FACT : Founded in 1852 and incorporated in 1864, an early settler, Nathaniel Vise, named Visalia after his family. Interestingly, he moved to the area from Visalia, Kentucky, which also carries his family’s moniker.

Visalia, the oldest town in Tulare County, is a delightful place to learn about the area’s agricultural history and indulge in tasty fruits, vegetables, restaurants and bakeries.

FUN FACT : Did you know California is the leading agricultural producer in the United States? 99% of commercially grown almonds, artichokes, dates, figs, raisins, kiwifruit, olives, peaches, persimmons, pistachios, prunes and walnuts consumed throughout the world are produced in California. Much of it originates in the Central Valley.

Wonderful Things to Do in Visalia, California

Seeking fun and free things to do in downtown Visalia, California? I’ve got you covered with Visalia attractions!

Historic Architecture Walking Tour

Things to do in Visalia California Darling Hotel

As someone who enjoys historic architecture and relishes exploring California gold rush towns , I never miss an opportunity to take walking tours to learn more about the towns I visit.

TOP TIP : Stop by the Visit Visalia tourist office at 112 E. Main Street from 8-5 Monday to Friday to pick up a pamphlet for a self-guided 45-minute walking tour .

Exploring downtown Visalia after dinner around sunset provided a delightful backdrop to revel at buildings dating from the late 1800s and early 1900s and appreciate how they have been repurposed.

The Visalia Fox Theater, Southern Pacific Depot, Tulare County Jail and Art Deco annex (now the Darling Hotel) are my favorite buildings on the downtown Visalia walking tour.

Visalia Fox Theater

Things to do in Visalia California Fox Theater

Do you enjoy live entertainment? If so, you can attend a performance at the Visalia Fox Theater. Operating since 1930 , this notable theater’s Spanish-style design transports you back to old Hollywood.

TOP TIP : Check the theater schedule to see what events are taking place while you are in town.

Downtown Visalia Mural Tour

Things to do in Visalia California Giant Sequoias Mural

During your walking tour, it’s worthwhile to seek out the sizable murals interspersed throughout downtown Visalia. For me, the Giant Sequoias and Moro Rock are the most striking .

These two murals will stoke your excitement for visiting Sequoia National Park as these are two iconic views you will have while in the park.

Art on Fire – Painted Fire Hydrants

While walking around downtown Visalia admiring the historic architecture and murals, keep your eyes peeled for one of the 22 colorful fire hydrants along Main Street.

FUN FACT: Talented Visalia artists painted the fire hydrants, which also serve the dual purpose of fundraising for Arts Visalia , a visual arts center that provides art exhibitions and art education programs.

Check out the Arts Visalia website to see exhibitions offered during your visit.

Pacific Treasures & Gourmet

Pacific Treasures and Gourmet Visalia California

If you share my addiction to home and gourmet food stores , Pacific Treasures & Gourmet is not to be missed. Since I’m always seeking new gadgets, cookware, sauces, oils and spices for cooking and baking, this is an enticing store to visit.

Things to Do Around Visalia, California

Wondering what else to do in Visalia, California? Check out these activities and experiences in and near Visalia, California.

Visalia Farmers’ Market  (2231 W Main Street)

Things to Do in Visalia California Visalia Farmers Market

Visiting the local Farmers’ Market is one of my favorite things to do in Visalia, California, allowing you to support local businesses while discovering handmade gifts and indulging in fresh fruits, vegetables, and treats.

If you visit Visalia on a weekend, the Visalia Farmers’ Market is open every Saturday year-round from 8-1130AM.

Wander amongst 60+ vendors and pick up goodies for your Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Park explorations and spoil yourself with delicious breakfast treats.

Some of my favorite vendors include:

  • Prairie Flour Bread Company – select whole or sliced sourdough loaves. Their jalapeno cheddar sour dough, which isn’t overly spicy , is the BEST sourdough bread I’ve ever had. My sliced loaf stayed soft and fresh for a week!

TOP TIP : Since many items sell out by 9am, stop here first.

  • Baked – their hand pies and bagels are DELISH !

TOP TIP : Grab a vegan, olive oil sea salt brownie if they have it. I am STILL dreaming about this rich and chewy delight and trying to figure out how I can recreate it!

  • Cinnamon Roll Shack – your mouth will water choosing amongst strawberry, apple, walnut or pecan raisin cinnamon rolls.

TOP TIP: Ask for icing on the side if you won’t eat it immediately.

  • Sweet Provisions Crepes – nine different crepes will tantalize you. Monkey Business is decadent with peanut butter, Nutella, bananas, and chocolate syrup
  • Quesadilla Gorilla – start your day with a meat or veggie quesadilla
  • Top of the Hill Jams – you can’t go wrong with orange marmalade, fig jam, or some of their unique spicy options
  • La Blu – peruse the beautifully colored and flavored macarons
  • Café Kaweah – grab coffee and grilled panini sandwiches

Tulare County Museum in Mooney Grove Park

Things to Do in Visalia California Tulare County Museum

The Tulare County Museum , located in Mooney Grove Park, only 5 miles (15 minutes) from downtown Visalia, California, is a fun place to learn about the Yokuts Indians history with your family.

Interesting exhibits include handwoven baskets, mortar and pestles for grinding acorns, arrowheads, historic buildings, covered wagons and farming equipment.

FUN FACT : Did you know that one Yokuts family would consume 2000 lbs of acorns each year!?

The beautifully displayed baskets are woven from tule grass. Baskets served a variety of purposes, including gathering, cooking, carrying food and sifting. Women used gambling trays to play dice. Interestingly, dice were made from walnuts and abalone shells.

FUN FACT : Small baskets take three to four weeks to create while larger baskets can take a year to weave !

I personally loved learning that different designs are used for male and female cradle boards to carry babies. The cradle board cover provides sun protection while the beads entertain infants.

TOP TIP : Be sure to walk around the outdoor Pioneer Village, which includes a schoolhouse, log cabin, jail, and blacksmith shop dating from the 1800s .

I also enjoyed admiring a vintage tractor, pick up truck and covered wagon in the large barn. You can also delve into all the groups that have impacted agriculture in the San Joaquin Valley. Dutch, Japanese, Mexican, African American, Native American, Italian and 10 other groups have been highlighted.

Go Native! Native American Cultural Celebration at Kaweah Oaks Preserve

Things to do in Visalia California Go Native Cultural Event

Since my visit to Visalia, California, coincided with the annual Go Native Cultural Event , I had the opportunity to immerse and learn even more about the Native American Yokuts tribe at the Kaweah Oaks Preserve. Drumming, classes and Indian Tacos are some of the event highlights.

FUN FACT : Kaweah Oaks Preserve, covering 344-acres, is one of the few places you can see an oak riparin forest in the San Joaquin Valley.

Observing the classes gives an appreciation for how tule grass is selected and used to create the lovely handwoven Yokuts baskets you can see at the Tulare County Museum. Witnessing the Yokuts dice game and seeing how fire sticks are used as firestarters is fascinating..

INTERESTING FACT: I had the pleasure of meeting Jennifer Malone, the event organizer. Jennifer’s mother, Marie Wilcox, devoted 20 years to creating a dictionary for the Wukchumni language to preserve the legacy and aid younger generations before she passed away in September 2021. Learn more about Marie’s legacy in this New York Times article .

To find future Go Native! Event dates, check out the Sequoia Riverlands Trust site .

Dry Creek Preserve

Things to do in Visalia California Dry Creek Preserve

Dry Creek Preserve , a reclaimed and restored gravel quarry, is a lovely place to stop on the way to Sequoia National Park for disc golf, a picnic, hiking or mountain biking.

TOP TIP: In the spring, it’s a great place to spy wildflowers.

FUN FACT: An onsite nursery grows the native plants used to restore the Dry Creek Preserve and other Sequoia Riverlands Trust (SRT) preserves. Check dates that you can volunteer at the nursery on the website and learn more about the preserve’s history on Tulare County Treasures .

Best Places to Eat: Visalia, California Restaurants

As a dedicated foodie , chatting with locals always allows me to discover the best places to eat. While in Visalia, California, I encourage you to indulge in as many of these restaurants and bakeries as your schedule allows.

FUN FACT : USA Today and Rand McNally have named Visalia, California, one of “ America’s Best Small Towns for Food .”

Component Coffee Lab (514 E Main St)

Things to do in Visalia California Component Coffee Lab

After Angie, the Visalia Farmers’ Market manager, raved about Component Coffee Lab’ s hip space, artisanal coffee and baked goods , I made a special stop. Waiting in line is absolutely worth it ! Enjoy their creations in their welcoming indoor space or outdoor, shaded patio.

Since I’m super sensitive to caffeine and sound like a commercial voiceover ratcheted up to 3x speed if I consume it, I gravitate towards teas rather than coffees. If you are a coffee drinker, you’ll covet their curated offerings.

TOP TIP : If you have a sweet tooth like I do, you should ABSOLUTELY order Component Coffee Lab’s salted toffee chip cookie . This behemoth cookie will reward your tastebuds with oats, coconut, espresso, semi sweet chocolate chips and toffee bits. I wish I had bought two!

They also offered a brioche donut glazed with Nutella , which is yummy.

I personally appreciate how Visalia businesses support one another. Component Coffee Lab offers Baked’s bagels, which you can also find at the Baked Store or Farmer’s Market. The Jalapeno cheddar bagel is on point with its perfectly baked in cheese layer.

Next time, I intend to try their Hibiscus Ginger Lime Spritzer , cacio e pepe scone (my favorite Italian dish in scone form!) and their hot honey chicken sandwich.

Cellar Door ( 101 W Main St )

Things to do in Visalia California Cellar Door

Tate Darwin, Cellar Door ’s chef, is a food artist . Tate innovates tapa-style small plates , allowing you to pair his exquisite dishes with his innovative pre-prohibition cocktails .

Since I’m not a gin drinker, they substituted vodka for gin in their Lavender Smash cocktail , muddling it with lavender, lime, sage and St. Germain soda.

Trained at the Culinary Institute in NYC, Tate sources the ingredients for his seasonally changing menu from the Visalia Farmers’ Market.

FUN FACT : To perfect the taste and presentation, Tate workshops every dish at least ten times before plating and serving them to customers for the first time.

To save room for subsequent dishes, I resisted the temptation to gobble up the in-house crafted bread and butter with sea salt. Following Tate’s suggestion to squeeze lemon juice on my charred asparagus enhanced the flavor. I can’t imagine eating asparagus any other way now.

Although tempted to drink my roasted radishes’ balsamic glaze , I refrained and saved leftovers, enjoying them for breakfast the next morning.

Pacing myself, I reserved room for Tate’s divine butternut squash curry with Persian rice. As a butternut squash fanatic , this dish is perfectly seasoned with cumin, coriander, cayenne pepper and turmeric.

TOP TIP :  To maximize flavors, Tate freshly grinds spices in a coffee grinder. I plan to adopt this chef hack to elevate my Indian dishes, which I make at least once a week.

Elderwood Restaurant & Lounge  (210 N Court St)

Things to do In Visalia California Elderwood Restaurant

As part of your Visalia walking tour, you will admire the Darling hotel and spy the rooftop Elderwood Restaurant and Lounge atop this Art Deco building.

After returning from hiking in Kings Canyon late one evening, I relished the warm breeze as I noshed on Elderwood’s sourdough bread and butter while sipping on a refreshing raspberry lemon drop cocktail that my server had suggested.

TOP TIP : Elderwood is popular for good reason. Reservations are recommended for brunch from 7:30-1 or dinner from 4:30-9:30.

Their pistachio crusted tofu with chipotle spiced lentils is scrumptious and sizable. After polishing off this dish, I didn’t have room for the pot de crème dessert I’d been planning to order.

If you enjoy red wine, they offer an Austin Hope Cabernet Sauvignon that I discovered on a recent Paso Robles visit and highly recommend.

Baked (110 S Church St)

Baked Cherry Hand Pie Visalia California

If you aren’t able to visit the Visalia Farmers’ Market on a Saturday, you’ll be happy to know that Baked , a female owned business , has a brick and mortar store too.

Open Tuesdays to Fridays from 7AM to 3PM, their hand pies are not to be missed! I savored every morsel of my cherry hand pie and wished I’d tried the guava and oreo hand pies too. Their brownies, especially the vegan, olive oil sea, salt version, are divine!

Other delicious offerings include focaccia, vegan cakes and cupcakes, bagels (jalapeno cheddar is my fave), danishes, coffee cakes, and scones.

Quesadilla Gorilla (302 W Main Street)

Things to do in Visalia California Quesadilla Gorilla

After starting as a pop-up in Visalia in 2013, Quesadilla Gorilla has developed a devoted following. With brick and mortar locations in Visalia, Fresno, Hanford, San Luis Obispo and a food truck in Three Rivers, they are continuing to expand further and will soon franchise.

FUN FACT : Quesadilla Gorilla has used crowd-funding bonds to fuel their meteoric growth, allowing loyal patrons to invest and realize returns.

Choose from the “dilla of the day,” meat and veggie options or build your own. Vegan cheese is available too. Complement your quesadilla with their homemade salsas, including “ avocado salsa ” (tomatillos, onions, garlic and avocado) and the house favorite “ liquid gold ” (smoked chiles with garlic).

If you are craving something sweet, they also have a Nutella quesadilla. Is my Nutella addiction apparent yet?

Farm Fresh Bowls (5427 W. Cypress Way)

 Farm Fresh Bowls Visalia California

Seeking locally sourced, nutritionally balanced bowls for breakfast or lunch? Farm Fresh Bowls has you covered. Choose from oatmeal, yogurt, granola, acai, egg, or baked potato bowls from the convenient drive through . Smoothies, cider and coffee are also available.

Using my reusable cutlery and metal straws from my sustainable travel essentials allows me to minimize my environmental footprint when enjoying on the go meals.

Frosted Muffin (2145 W. Whitendale Avenue)

Located only three miles (~10 minutes) from downtown Visalia, Frosted Muffin is a locally owned, family business worth a stop. Choose from one of the six cupcake flavors they offer every day. Or, mix it up with one of the six flavors that changes daily. Some of their unique combinations include: Rolo, strawberry cobbler and peanut butter cookie. Get in my belly!

Where to Stay in Visalia, California

Choose from a number of lodging options while you immerse in all the memorable things to do in Visalia, California.

Darling Hotel

If you want to stay in a historic Art Deco hotel in the heart of downtown Visalia and be walking distance from all Visalia’s attractions, the Darling Hotel is a terrific option.

FUN FACT : This boutique hotel used to serve as the Tulare County courthouse.

TOP TIP : Make sure to dine at the rooftop Elderwood Restaurant and Lounge and enjoy the panoramic views. More on my favorite dish and drink above.

Visalia Marriott at the Convention Center

Visalia Marriott Downtown Convention Center

The Visalia Marriott at the Convention Center is a modern downtown hotel option. If you are a Marriott Bonvoy rewards member, this convenient location affords you the opportunity to walk to downtown while also earning Marriott Bonvoy points.

TOP TIP : Enjoy food, cocktails and live music on the outdoor patio at the DT Lounge on Fridays from 5-9PM and Sundays from 3-6PM.

Changing up their menu every quarter, the DT Lounge sources local, fresh ingredients. I really enjoyed my hummus plate and California bowl with tomatillo salsa. Their blackberry margarita is also delish!

Holiday Inn Express

Holiday Inn Express Visalia, California

If you don’t mind a short eight-minute drive to downtown, the Holiday Inn Express is a nice option.

You can indulge in their free onsite breakfast or head next door to Farm Fresh Bowls for their myriad breakfast bowls. The hotel is also walking distance to Fugazzis Bistro, which offers salads, pizzas and pastas for dinner.

I’d love to hear your favorite things to do in Visalia, California when you visit.

You are visiting at a great time of year and there is so much to discover in and around Visalia, including Sequoia and Kings Canyon. If you’ll be visiting Yosemite too, you can undertake the Majestic Mountain loop and visit all three parks. I’ll have an article about that soon. What to Do in Visalia, California

What to Do in Visalia, California

Last Updated on December 21, 2023

Visalia, the closest town to Sequoia National Park, is a vibrant and lively town holding and exhibiting a significant history. I’m here to tell you all about what to do in Visalia, California.

Visalia was named after eccentric Nathanial Vise from Visalia, Kentucky. Vise, a bear hunter, land promoter, horse trader, preacher, and restaurateur in his colorful lifetime, opened a restaurant in San Francisco and served bear meat. As a surveyor and doing his work in Four Creeks, California, Vise helped settle Visalia, named after his family.

Four Creeks is the oldest continuously inhabited inland European settlement between Los Angeles and Stockton.

Self-Guided Tour of Early Visalia

When starting to plan what to do in Visalia, California, orient yourself with a 45-minute walk of Downtown Visalia. The Historic Visalia Trail is four blocks long by three blocks wide. The preserved buildings have a story to tell, and Questers International helps to tell those stories.

Questers International’s Visalia Chapter, Kawea Kollectors, has researched and placed plaques on many downtown historic sites. This volunteer organization supports the restoration and preservation of historic buildings, antiquities, and sites.

Train tracks run through the city, bringing lumber products to the central rail station for outbound shipping. Locals like to say the length of the cross-city train shows how prosperous the town is. As we watched the train running down the tracks, my guide exclaimed, “We are pretty prosperous today”!

When horses were the means of transportation in early Visalia, a traveler would “park” in front of the business and tie his reins to the ring. There are still a dozen on Main Street from the late 1800s to early1900s.

Giant Sequoia Mural - Visalia, CA

Many murals line the streets of Downtown and throughout the city. Some are commissioned and paid for by the Visalia Veterans Committee, and students directed by art teachers paint others.

The murals depict life in Visalia and express historical and cultural appreciation.

Restaurant Tour

Crawdaddy's - Visalia, CA

Visalia has an incredible lineup of outstanding restaurants, all in walkable Downtown. Three of my favorites are:

Pita Kabob Mediterranean Gastropub specializes in rice bowls, pita wraps, shawarma, vegetarian, and vegan selections. Their fresh, colorful Mediterranean meals are so appealing.

Brewbaker’s Brewing Company is the original brewery on Main Street. Typical brewpub classics on the menu include Fish & Chips, Blackened Salmon Chowder, Homemade Chili, and more.

Crawdaddy’s with New Orleans flair makes traditional Creole/Cajun cuisine to write home about. A casual crowd parties in the downstairs sports bar. The upstairs dining room boasts tablecloths, napkins, and club-style furnishings with upscale, formal touch.

Brewery Tour

The Visalia Brewery Tour includes several breweries along Main Street. At Brewbaker’s Brewing Co., I enjoyed generous samples and settled on a local craft beer, of course.

When Brewbaker’s started construction on their building in 1999, excavation at their current location produced artifacts from previous times that indicated the locals came to this location for their spirits.

A brewery tour/pub crawl is easily accomplished in Downtown Visalia.

Art on Fire Tour

Art on Fire Tour-Visalia, CA

In addition to the many murals around town, anyone can experience art on many street corners in the way of painted fire hydrants and trash bins. Nothing is sacred from the artist’s brush in Downtown Visalia.

To learn more about each work of art, a plaque placed on the pavement near the art contains a QR code. By holding your cell phone over the code, a link activates and takes you to more information about the artist and the sponsor—a truly interactive experience with public art.

Naturally Nuts

While Naturally Nuts won’t be on many lists of “what to do in Visalia, California,” it should be. A few short blocks from the main road on the way to the parks, this destination holds the freshest nuts, dried fruits, sugar-free chocolate nut clusters, and caramel pecan logs.

There is no middleman between the farm and the store in this Central Valley business. Owned by John and Barbara Oneto, Naturally Nuts, is a three-generation family-owned farm growing crops in this agriculture-rich region. John’s grandfather emigrated from Italy to farm in the San Joaquin Valley. His father and uncle joined the farm, and John and his wife are now carrying on the tradition of growing cherries, tree nuts, and row crops.

When I spoke with John recently, he proudly told me of his farming heritage. To date, he is responsible for processing 2-billion pounds of nuts in his career. He also co-developed a pistachio roasting technique that is the industry standard today. I really enjoyed the bag of pistachios in my goodie bag.

If you have a chance to talk with John about the landscape, water, and history of the San Joaquin Valley, it will be time well spent. He is knowledgeable and passionate about agriculture and sharing all he knows. He frequently speaks to 4-H clubs, tour groups, gardening clubs, personal tours, and corporate tours.

Mooney Grove Park

Mooney Grove Park-The End of the Trail

Valley oak trees covered a 400 square mile area when pioneers first arrived in the San Joaquin Valley. By the 1890s, most of this forest had disappeared due to agricultural clearing and timber harvest.

In the early 1900s, Hugh Mooney, a Tulare County rancher, donated 100-acres of his ranch land to be maintained as a public park. He was concerned that the oak woodlands in the Valley were disappearing. Mooney required that none of the trees in this park be cut unless they were diseased or dying. He also left $5,000 toward building the county museum, located at the park.

Mooney Grove Park commemorates Mooney and his favorite hunting dog with a statue at the front of the park.

The End of the Trail sculpture, found at the entrance to Mooney Grove Park, depicts a weary Native American man hanging limp as his tired horse comes to the edge of the Pacific Ocean.

The sculpture is a bronze replica of James Earle Fraser’s original work, which is now in the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum in Oklahoma. The statue is a commentary on the damage the Euro-American settlement inflicted upon Native Americans. The central figure embodies the suffering and exhaustion of people driven from their native lands.

Sequoia Tree Legacy

Known as the “Gateway to the Sequoias” for almost a century, Downtown Visalia is home to the Sequoia Legacy Tree.

A pair of trees were planted as saplings in 1936 on either side of the Art Deco post office by Guy Hopping, Superintendent of General Grant National Park (now Kings Canyon), and Nathan Levy, the Visalia Postmaster. Only one tree remains today because Arborists removed the tree on the east side of the building in the 1980s due to poor health.

A close look at this small park will compare the General Sherman Tree (found in Sequoia National Park) circumference, about 102 feet, indicated by stone and fencing around the Sequoia Legacy Tree. General Sherman Tree is 275 feet tall compared to the Sequoia Legacy Tree, which is about 65 feet tall because of the difference in growing conditions.

The Sequoia Legacy Tree stands as a symbol of the resilient relationship with its mountain neighbors.

The Darling Hotel

The Darling Hotel - Visalia, CA

At Courthouse Square on the northeast corner of Center Avenue, an Art Deco-style annex was added in 1935. Granite edging, quarried from nearby Rocky Hill, around the property (the entire block) remains from the 1890s. Not ADA compliant, the granite curbs are a unique demonstration of life in the 1800s.

After sitting empty for decades, the annex was restored as The Darling Hotel , a boutique property with a rooftop lounge that begs a visit. A 360-degree view of the city creates a magical experience after dark.

11. The Oldest Living Thing

General Sherman Tree

General Sherman Tree in Sequoia National Park is one of the top destinations for your drive from Visalia. A 45-minute journey, without stops, will transport you to the park entrance. The General Sherman Tree grows at 6,000+ feet above sea level and is an extraordinary sight. It is the oldest living thing on our planet.

Many interesting stops along the way include restaurants, the ranger station where you can get a stamp in your National Parks book, and restrooms. Numerous turnouts along the drive guarantee that you won’t complete the trip in only 45-minutes. I found that I had to stop, admire, and photograph the breathtaking flora and landscape around every turn. I also noted the change in plants and flowering trees during the climb in elevation.

Farmer Bob in Ivanhoe

Dedicated to education and affordable fun, Robert McKellar, aka Farmer Bob, carries on two-generation citrus growing production at Farmer Bob’s World in Ivanhoe, California.

You can’t talk about Visalia in the agriculture-rich region of the San Joaquin Valley without mentioning the surrounding citrus-growing fields as far as the eye can see.

Visalia is the closest town to Sequoia National Park. Ivanhoe and Farmer Bob’s World is between the park and Visalia. If you are looking for something interesting to do, plan a visit and learn about oranges, how they grow, how they are harvested, and how they reach our table. On the farm tour, you’ll learn how to pick an orange and take it home with you.

If you go in the spring, the scent of citrus blossoms is so strong that you can almost taste it. The fragrance is delicious and palpable, and you’ll find yourself looking around to see its origin.

McKellar Family Farms began in 1927 when Bob’s father, Hugh Angus McKellar, and his wife, Vernice, purchased the land. Crop production included grapes, olives, oranges, and mandarins. Bob and his wife, Norene, began managing the farm when Hugh passed away in 1972.

I like what Bob had to say when asked what he liked best about being a farmer. He said, “The lifestyle. It’s challenging, relaxing, risky. You get to work with nature and be close to God.”

In addition to farm tours, Bob has diversified by adding a wedding and event venue called Historic Seven Sycamores Ranch . The 80-year-old McKellar family farmhouse offers farm stays to folks who want to experience a working orchard. And Bob actively participates in the national CSA program, a community-supported agriculture system for home and office deliveries. It’s a co-op with other small farmers in the area.

On my visit, I sampled an orange and a mandarin. The perfect gems were luscious and juicy. I won’t take citrus for granted again.

Arts Consortium

The Arts Consortium is an inclusive and enriching arts program that celebrates and rewards artists throughout the region. The Art Center is home to aerosol artists, among others, where they learn to hone their craft of the art behind graffiti.

Twice a year, major art productions serve the community. In the spring, the South Valley Art Tour is a unique event during which artists share their artistic process and work environment with Tulare County residents and visitors. In the fall, downtown Visalia is home to Taste of the Arts. This free community event celebrates art, food, and fun.

Year-round visual art exhibitions create and enhance the quality of life in the Visalia community.

VISALIA HERITAGE

A nonprofit for the preservation of visalia’s historic structures and resources.

Preserved Visalia Homes on the Historic Register

was founded in 1978 by a group of concerned citizens alarmed by the growing number of demolitions in Visalia’s historic neighborhoods. With no formal protections in place for these homes and buildings, something had to be done.

Through partnership with the City, thousands of properties were cataloged and photographed by 160 volunteers over a six-month period. The City then prepared a report called the Historic Preservation Element, which recommended establishing a Local Register of Historic Structures, an Historic District, and an Historic Preservation Ordinance, along with a City Historic Preservation Advisory Committee to oversee these properties. Separately the report recommended that a private, nonprofit organization was also needed.

As a result, VISALIA HERITAGE was founded.

Three distinct areas make up the Historic District which contains thousands of buildings with 350 of those properties listed on the Local Register of Historic Structures.

The homes shown in these old photos are all listed on the Local Register and still stand today – just a small cross section of many beautiful buildings that were saved and preserved through the efforts of VISALIA HERITAGE, the City, and may Visalians since 1978.

Now in our 46th year, the work of VISALIA HERITAGE continues and we are still focused on the preservation of our collective past through community engagement.

How To Spend A Fantastic Long Weekend In Charming Visalia, California

visalia tour

  • Weekend Getaway

I used to prefer big cities to small towns, but the last year has changed that. After exploring dozens of smaller towns in California, I’ve discovered that I appreciate the slower pace of life, charming downtowns, and the sense of community. Visalia checks all these boxes and is now among my favorite new places.

My husband and I were fortunate to be invited to Visalia to explore all this town has to offer within its boundaries as well as the abundant natural resources just a short drive away. I thought two days would be sufficient to see and do most everything in Visalia, but it wasn’t. I see a return trip in my future.

Visalia is located in California’s Central Valley, probably the most important agricultural region in the state. It’s just three and a half hours north of Los Angeles or south of San Francisco. Founded in 1852, Visalia is surrounded by orchards growing oranges, almonds, and walnuts. Nearby are Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks offering 1,300 square miles of open space to explore. This is a great place for outdoor lovers to spend a weekend.

This trip was paid for by Visit Visalia, but all opinions are my own.

Things To Do In Visalia

While Visalia makes a great home base for exploring the nearby national parks, there is also plenty to do within the city limits. I definitely recommend allowing time for both.

Historic building on the grounds of Tulare County Museum.

Tulare County Museum Of Farm Labor And Agriculture

We began our time in Visalia at the Tulare County Museum of Farm Labor and Agriculture , and I’m so glad we did. It was a great introduction to the region and helped inform all of our other activities. The museum covers a wide range of history starting with the Native Americans who inhabited the area — the Yokuts — and continuing through all the different groups that helped settle Tulare County and the Central Valley. The museum’s property is quite large and includes several historic buildings like Surprise School — a one-room schoolhouse built in 1908 — and a reconstructed log cabin from 1854. If you’re visiting with young children, they’ll definitely enjoy the old caboose from the Southern Pacific Railway. The museum is located in Mooney Grove Park, which is the oldest county park in California. As you drive around the park, keep an eye out for the brightly colored peacocks.

Harvesting oranges at McKellar Family Farms.

McKellar Family Farms

Farmer Bob’s World

I wasn’t sure what to expect before visiting Farmer Bob’s World , but for both Jason (my husband) and me, it was one of the highlights of our trip. We were fortunate to tour this farm just days before its grand opening and meet the attraction’s namesake, Bob McKellar. At almost 90 years old, Farmer Bob decided that kids and families need to better understand where their food comes from, so he created an educational attraction. The centerpiece of the attraction is a tractor-pulled wagon ride through the orange groves with narration. Visitors will learn about the McKellar Family, how orange trees are planted, and how the fruit is harvested each year. At the end of the tour, we had the chance to pick two oranges using clippers. We left much more informed about agriculture in general and orange growing in particular. Any family visiting the area should make time to visit this place!

Visalia Fox Theater.

Visalia Fox Theater

Fox Theater

I’ve always been a theater buff, so the chance to tour the historic Visalia Fox Theater was a real treat. Opened in 1930 as part of the Fox Theater chain, the theater combines a Spanish-style exterior with an East Indian interior. Every aspect of the interior is beautifully decorated, from the staircase railings to the light fixtures. Built during a time when organs were a part of any movie theater experience, the Fox Theater still has its organ, and its organist, 91-year-old Pete Sweeney, has been playing here since he was 15! Today the theater is home to the Sequoia Symphony Orchestra and a children’s theater group, Enchanted Playhouse.

Charming downtown Visalia.

Walking Tour Of Downtown

Increasingly, small towns throughout the U.S. are preserving their downtowns, making them attractive to both locals and visitors, and Visalia is doing the same. Its downtown is full of historic buildings with architectural styles ranging from Italianate to Art Deco. To learn more, grab a self-guided tour map at the Visit Visalia office and explore 18 different buildings dating as far back as 1857. While walking along Main Street, be sure to look down at the curbs where you’ll see metal rings anchored in granite — this was where horses were hitched before the automobile became commonplace.

Sequoia's in the snow, Sequoia National Park.

Sequoia And Kings Canyon National Parks

With over 1,000 miles of trails, Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks are a hiker’s dream, offering dramatic mountain views, rivers with rapids, Giant Sequoias, and even a few waterfalls. Sequoia is a 45-minute drive from Visalia while Kings Canyon is an hour and a half, but since they are managed as one unit, you’ll pay the entrance fee just once.

A highlight of any visit to Sequoia is the General Sherman Tree , the largest tree by volume in the world. No, it’s not the tallest or the widest, but it has more wood in its trunk than any other tree on Earth. It’s 275 feet tall and approximately 2,200 years old. The tree is named for the American Civil War General William Tecumseh Sherman.

Wendy under a sequoia tree in Sequoia National Park.

We were fortunate to explore Sequoia National Park on snowshoes with Krista Simonic of Sequoia Guides . Typically, Jason and I explore national parks on our own, but a guided experience really expanded our understanding of both the ecology and history of the park. We trekked through the snow along the three-mile Congress Trail, constantly surrounded by a grove of giant sequoias. The view of these rugged, red trees contrasted with the fresh white snow was stunning. If you’re able to visit the park in the winter like we did, you’ll be rewarded with no crowds and gorgeous scenery. Learn more about our Sequoia experience and the seven best hikes in Sequoia according to an experienced guide (Krista Simonic) here .

Best Restaurants In Visalia

Visalia’s proximity to national parks is one of its attractions, but so is its large selection of great restaurants. An added bonus is that most of the restaurants are quite affordable.

Jason and I had arrived a bit early for our tour of Fox Theater, and since it was raining outside, we decided to grab a cup of coffee and a snack at Bee Hive Bake Shop . The bakery case was loaded with delicious-looking treats like danishes, cupcakes, and cookies. After a long deliberation, we settled on a cheese and almond danish which was really tasty. Bee Hive also sells lunch items, so this would be a great option for breakfast or lunch.

Another breakfast spot I’d recommend is Component Coffee Lab . What started as a mobile coffee cart expanded to a brick-and-mortar restaurant in 2018. Tucked down a small breezeway, this place offers a nice selection of coffee drinks, pastries, and breakfast items including plenty of vegan options as well.

I was delighted to learn that Visalia has a microbrewery district . My only regret is not having enough time to explore more of it. Our first night in town, Jason and I opted to have dinner at Brewbakers Brewing Co. , the oldest brewery in town. With at least six beers on tap at any time, there’s something for everyone. We thoroughly enjoyed the Sequoia Red, a style of beer that can be hard to find. The food was good as well with plenty of options for vegetarians like me.

For a splurge or special occasion, The Elderwood is the place to go. This rooftop restaurant located in The Darling Hotel serves delicious food and craft cocktails along with great views of town. We ordered coconut tofu curry and shrimp scampi and would recommend both dishes.

Best Hotels In Visalia

With over two dozen hotels in Visalia, there is something for everyone’s taste and budget. Jason and I stayed at the Visalia Marriott at the Convention Center . I’ve long been a fan of Marriott hotels since they are consistently clean, comfortable, and well-staffed. The downside is that they can all look alike. So it was a nice surprise to see that the decor reflected the environs. A large mural of sequoias greeted us in the hallway after exiting the elevator. In our room, the desk appeared to be a cross-section of a tree complete with bark along the edges. And an enlarged photo of sequoias adorned the wall. But even more importantly, downtown Visalia was just a one-block walk from the hotel.

The Darling Hotel is also a nice option for upscale accommodations. This Art Deco building was originally the Tulare County courthouse annex, but today it’s a stylish boutique hotel centrally located downtown.

Visalia is small enough to easily navigate but large enough to offer plenty of attractions, restaurants, shopping, and accommodations. And with its convenient location near two national parks, it makes for a great long weekend stay.

If you prefer to stay in a vacation home, VRBO has plenty of excellent options:

Popular Russian tribute band returning to Visalia for concert

Dale Yurong Image

KINGSBURG, Calif. (KFSN) -- A Russian band has been overwhelmed by the support from American audiences, especially in the Valley.

With their spot on sounds of Chicago, Leonid and Friends can't wait to get back to Visalia.

"Beautful, beautiful town. Not very big but very unique. Unique yes, quaint. The Fox Theater, I remember it," said Leonid Vorobyev.

Leonid's son, Roman, manages the band, which has been busy adding to its set list.

While growing up in Siberia, Leonid said the music of Chicago represented a "ray of hope."

"Every band in Russia in 70s had the same set as Chicago. Three horns and the rhythm sections," said Leonid.

A decade ago, the group recorded its first song Leonid transcribed.

"I put it on YouTube without any expectations and, honestly, I thought American audiences will scorn us. Like, 'Oh these Russians, who do they think they are? But suddenly, unexpectedly, it was pshhhhhhh. Bang! Hahaha," Leonid said.

Millions of views later, fans demanded a tour.

Their next one brings them back to Visalia's Fox Theater on Sunday, November 10.

Leonid is almost 70, but the fans keep him young.

"Oh, the audience. American audience. American people are so beautiful, so heartful and we just feel happy when we go to the stage."
