Visiting campus the four questions for admitted students.

This week we are joined by our Associate Director of Guest Experience, Andrew Cohen. Welcome, Andrew!

It has been a while, but it is good to be back on the blog, especially during one of my favorite times of the year.  April is a busy month for all admission professionals, but especially for those responsible for campus visit programming.  Between high school juniors starting to tour campuses to admitted students hunkering down to make their college enrollment decision, institutions are busy welcoming students and families to their campuses.  Here at Georgia Tech, it is not unusual for us to see 400 visitors each day throughout the month of April!

But it is not just these busy weeks of spring break visits and admitted student events that I look forward to each year, it is also my favorite Jewish holiday that always falls right in the middle of all of this craziness.  The Jewish holiday of Passover is celebrated each spring to commemorate and retell the story of the exodus from Ancient Egypt.  Each year, Jewish families all over the world gather together for a seder to retell the story.  For me, Passover is a time filled with family traditions and memories, like making matzah balls with my Bubbie (Yiddish for grandmother), utilizing various family heirlooms on the seder table that have been used for decades and always some subpar singing from my father.  We even use the same Haggadah (book or guide used during the Passover seder), that has been used by my family for more than 30 years.  My father still uses my grandfather’s Haggadah with all his notes from when he led our seders until his passing.

One of the parts of a traditional Passover seder is known as the Four Questions .  Early on in the seder, the youngest family member recites a series of four questions to help fulfil the obligations of retelling the story of Passover and to help children at the seder better understand the significance of the holiday.  Although I am in my thirties, I am still the youngest at the Cohen Family Seder, so I continue to hold the responsibility of reciting these four questions (really hoping for a nephew or niece to eventually take this one over!).  The Four Questions all center around the idea of “Why is this night different from all other nights?”  As we go through each question, we are reminded of the telling of the story of the Exodus from Egypt and the traditions of Passover that are still practiced today.

Like the Passover seder, visiting campus should be an engaging, interactive experience. It’s an opportunity for you to pause, reflect, and and ask important questions to help you make or confirm your final college choice. Here are ways to frame your questions and prepare ahead of time to maximize your visit.

  1. Academic Interests and Options

Make an effort to meet with experts beyond admission counselors and tour guides. Inquire in advance to see if you might be able speak with faculty members, academic advisors, or students within a particular major.  This is your chance to understand specific courses, various research projects, or other academically-related opportunities. Prospective students frequently ask general questions about majors and academic programs such as “do you have a psychology major?” or “tell me about your engineering program?”  A s an admitted student, your goal is to understand details about the academic area you are considering, and how you can tailor your studies toward your interests.  “How can I be a computer science major but also be a pre-med student?” or “I am interested in fintech. What kind of classes would I be able to take in this area?”  Remember,  your goal is to glean insight and details to gain an understanding of what your experience will really look like on these  campuses.

If the standard tour does not go to the buildings, or area of campus, where you will be spending a lot of your time, go there on your own. Even if you do not speak with someone, go into the different facilities, read the posters on the walls, and listen to what students are talking about in the hallways.  This is about understanding possibilities and culture.

2. Community

Students and families always have questions about living on campus and want to see specific residential halls.  Unfortunately, that is not always possible, due to the safety and privacy of students.  You’ll find most institutions have alternatives to allow you to better understand the on-campus living experience.  At Georgia Tech, we are unable to show visitors a residential hall, but our Office of Housing and Residence Life , have 360 photos of every single option… much more than what you would be able to ever see on a campus tour.

As an admitted student, your goal is to understand some of the unique residential opportunities available. For example, many institutions offer the option to live in theme-based housing which connects programming and classes.  Talk to your tour guide and other current students about the pros and cons about these types of experiences.

3. Culture

For admitted students, this is your chance to get an inside look at what it is really like to be a member of the institution’s community.  As an admitted student, don’t rush on and off campus. Build in time to explore parts of campus not shown on tour, talk to current students, attend an event, or just sit on campus and watch and listen.

Keep in mind you are visiting campus one day out of the year, so your experience is not going to be a fully accurate representation of the campus culture.  For instance there might not be many events happening if you are on campus the Friday before spring break or during final exams. This is where social media accounts can really help you learn more about things that happen throughout the year.  My colleague, Sammy, shared some great tips in a TikTok video on how to use social media effectively in your college search or decision-making process.  We all spend time scrolling on our social media, but this is a really great way to make that time productive!

4. Stories not statistics

Statistics can be helpful in helping you make a final decision, but you can ask Google for those. Use your time on campus to ask for stories and anecdotes about graduates or graduating seniors.  As an admission staff member who works with our campus tour guides, I love to brag about them (just like their parents and family members).  Yes, I can tell you a graduation rate, but talk to people like me on campus and they’ll inevitably tell you about a student deciding between multiple job offers across the country in their area of study, or connect you with a tour guide who interned over the summer and worked on a project that was a once in a lifetime opportunity. And ask tour guides for their stories too! It might be their own personal experience finding an internship or maybe their friends.  By reframing these questions, you will gain much better insight to the all-important topic of return on investment.

As we head toward May 1 and you visit schools to make your final choice, I hope you will refine and reframe your questions so you can utilize your time on campus. Ultimately, this will help you gain the insight and confidence you need to make this important decision.

I wish you the best of luck. Enjoy the remainder of high school– and an early congratulations on graduation.

And for those readers, who celebrate Passover, Chag Sameach .

My 5 Most Memorable Classes at Notre Dame

Published: September 02, 2024

Author: Johnny Blote

Johnny Blote '25 standing in front of Touchdown Jesus

When I was in high school, I had very few choices about what courses to take. For the most part, I could pick the AP class or the class that was in the core curriculum. Because of my educational background, I was almost overwhelmed by the course offerings the first time I hopped on PATH Class Search. While many of the courses for your major are quite structured and laid out for you, there is some flexibility to take courses that catch your eye. Woodworking, Nuptial Mystery, and Sports Leadership with Muffet McGraw are all exciting classes that I’ve heard students talk about during my time here, but those are just some of the many unique offerings that Notre Dame gives its students. Although they might not be as exciting as the classes I just listed, here are five courses that I will remember most from my time here at Notre Dame.

On The Road: Literature University Seminar - One of the fun aspects to the spring semester of your first year at Notre Dame is that you have the opportunity to register for the same courses as the friends that you made in your first semester. Having friends in a small class setting of about fifteen students made for some of the most enjoyable parts of the week. In addition to good company, the material was also fairly interesting. The course covered quest literature, and we did a fair amount of reading in between each class. During the lectures, our professor would get up and speak for nearly the entire hour-fifteen minute duration. This professor was one of the more interesting lecturers, as he would scream, flail his arms, and make grotesque sound effects every single time he got in front of us. Some of the books were boring and fairly difficult to get through, but that wouldn’t stop him from having the time of his life twice every week. I ended up living with two of my friends from that class in Chicago this summer, and we frequently referenced his mannerisms. 10/10 would recommend taking a random class with your friends.

Appalachia Seminar - This course made me realize that Notre Dame was the right place for me. This seminar meets once per week for the first half of the fall semester, and it is focused around a week-long service immersion over fall break. Students in the course are assigned a team at the beginning of the semester and are sent to sites in Ohio, West Virginia, Kentucky, or Tennessee. My group was sent to a rural town in northern Tennessee, and we did home restoration throughout the week. This class is an incredible way to get close to ten new people, and I enjoyed it so much that I decided to lead the same project the following year. When I look back on my time at Notre Dame, both weeks were some of the best and most memorable times I’ve had here. This course encapsulates what it means to be a Notre Dame student, and I will never stop recommending it to anyone who asks about it.

Real Estate Finance - My parents would tell me wild stories about classes from college, and I always hoped that I would have a story worth telling. When I say I struck gold with this class, I truly mean it. The material was very practical with plenty of real-world application, but the most memorable part of this class was the professor. He reminded me of Robin Williams, and he always had plenty of enjoyable stories that didn’t have anything to do with what was going on in the material. I unfortunately didn’t do too well on the first midterm exam, but this is where the magic of Notre Dame saved me. The first class after spring break, the professor seemed noticeably flustered as the class filed in. He got up in front of the class and explained that he had all of our test scores held on a flash drive in his backpack. Over spring break, he left his backpack with his wife to go to the bathroom at the Miami Airport. During his time away from his wife, a person came running in and stole the backpack, meaning all of our scores from the first test were lost. To the frustration of the department, he had no choice but to give everyone an A on the lost exam. The reason for his disappointment was music to my ears, and I don’t know if I will ever catch another break as lucky as that one.

Foundations of Catholic Social Teaching - I personally love smaller classes, and this class was exactly what I was looking for. With only seven students, there were plenty of opportunities to participate in class and get to know the people around me. The course was heavily influential on the formation of my rational thinking, and I greatly enjoyed learning more about the Catholic Church. At the end of the semester, our professor invited the class to his house for dinner with his family. Although not tied to my major, this was one of the most important classes I’ve taken at Notre Dame.

Business Law - Most people say they hate this class. I am not one of those people. Although it was an absurd amount of reading, this was one of the most useful classes I’ve ever taken, and I actually enjoyed going to the lectures. It is no longer a requirement in Mendoza, but I would recommend every student to try and take this class. Having a very basic understanding of torts, contracts, and criminal law can be very beneficial to any person, regardless of their line of work. Although I doubt I’ll ever go to law school, this course made law much more appealing.

With my last year under way and more flexibility in my schedule, I am excited to explore more of what classes Notre Dame has to offer. While some people argue that a class that doesn’t teach you something applicable to your career is a waste of time, I couldn’t disagree more. Random classes have the ability to introduce you to new people, apply different methods of thought, and bring memories that will last a lifetime.

Georgia Tech Opens As A Small Favorite Over Syracuse in Week Two Matchup

After getting a win over Georgia State last night, Georgia Tech football is now 2-0 for the first time since 2016. The Yellow Jackets racked up nearly 500 yards of offense and the defense made critical stops in the red zone and on third down. Now, Georgia Tech must get prepared to face a talented Syracuse team who started their season off with a win yesterday over Ohio.

Syracuse quarterback Kyle McCord had a great debut for the Orange yesterday, throwing for over 300 yards and four touchdowns. Running back LeQuint Allen had a slow start yesterday, but finished with nearly 98 yards on 15 carries. Oronde Gadsden showed he has recovered from his injury and is back to being a star receiver in the ACC. This has a chance to be the best passing attack that Georgia Tech has seen so far this year and their secondary could be tested this week.

While Georgia Tech was a big favorite last night over Georgia State, they will be a small favorite over the Orange on Saturday on the road. According to Fanduel Sportsbook , Georgia Tech has opened as a 2.5-point favorite over Syracuse. Being a favorite on the road can be a tricky thing and Syracuse has been a tough place to play for teams before. The Yellow Jackets will have to play a good game on Saturday if they want to get the win on the road.

Georgia Tech outgained Georgia State 496-360 and the Yellow Jackets were able to rack up 225 yards rushing, with Jamal Haynes leading the way with 84 yards on 17 carries. Haynes King led an explosive passing attack, finishing 24-29 and 275 yards and three total touchdowns. Malik Rutherford had a huge day on offense, finishing with seven catches for 131 yards and one touchdown.

Georgia Tech averaged 7.8 yards per play while Georgia State averaged 5.7.

Georgia State rushed for 150 yards in this game and averaged 5.2 yards per carry. After a great performance against Florida State, I would say the defense did not perform as well tonight, although they made the big plays in the red zone that kept Georgia State off the board. The third-down defense was also stout, holding the Panthers to 3-12. The defense finished with eight tackles for loss against the Panthers
