And while you’re at it, look for advancement opportunities that are connected to what you’re currently doing (volunteering, interning, studying) and avoid getting caught up in distractions that deviate from your plan (i.e. pub-hopping or late-night partying). With all of the personal and professional interactions you’ll have, try to make long-lasting connections with your peers, colleagues, and leaders by being kind and grateful, but know your limits when it comes to socializing versus achieving your goals.

As for the practical, day-to-day gap year in Europe advice, strategize your itinerary so that you can make the most of the opportunity and plan ahead by being proactive in your activities. What’s it all about.

Our European Expedition Program is an epic and enlightening journey across Europe by train and sea that will broaden your horizons through exposure to the continent’s deep cultural and historical roots infused with an exhilarating mix of outdoor adventure in some of the world’s most iconic locations.

You will travel from the Arctic Circle to the Adriatic Sea with many amazing points between on this journey of a lifetime!

The program is designed to build students travel IQ, cultural knowledge, confidence and independence through the four cornerstones of Experiential Learning, Outdoor Adventure, Cultural Exchange and Immersive Travel.

Throughout the program students will learn about European culture first-hand while exploring iconic museums, UNESCO heritage sites and spectacular national parks. In addition to traveling to Europe’s ‘Must-See’ cities, you’ll venture far off the beaten track to exotic lands such as Northern Norway, Eastern Czech Republic and the Dalmatian Islands (to name but a few!).

Exploring Europe’s culture capitals and world class nature are at the heart of this program, but your time on The European Expedition is as much about the journey as the destinations. Our gappers will learn to travel like locals across Europe by train and ferry offering plenty of time to soak up the experience and enjoy the lifestyle and people of each of the countries we visit. Throughout the program we will stay in unique and charming hotels and hostels where gappers will meet other young travellers from all over the world.

We balance our time exploring Europe’s most beloved cities with breaks in pristine nature and national parks allowing students time to keep their batteries charged and adventure in some of the world’s most beautiful landscapes.

Who is this Program for?

The European Expedition Program is for students looking for an enriching and adventurous cultural experience that will take them to the far corners of the European continent with a cohort of peers.

This program is designed to expand students’ knowledge of Europe, build their independence, confidence and travel IQ through the cornerstones of Immersive Travel, Experiential Learning, Outdoor Adventure and Cultural Exchange.

Successful applicants will have a curiosity for culture and appreciation for travel, nature and adventure. You don’t need any outdoor sport (hiking, sailing, kayaking etc.) experience, nor are there any language requirements.

This great journey by land and sea requires three key traits above all else, an open mind, a thirst for adventure and desire to learn about the world.

• Inter-Rail through Europe’s favourite cities Amsterdam, Berlin, Munich, Prague, Dubrovnik, Copenhagen, Oslo, Florence and Venice – A classic rite of passage for any young traveller to Europe.
• Live on a boat for 8 days while sailing on the azure waters of the Adriatic Sea and explore Croatia’s Dalmatian Islands.
• Kayak your way through Norwegian Fjords, sleeping in cozy hikers cabins under the Northern Lights.
• Stay in some of Europe’s funkiest and best located hotels and hostels, including a converted Victorian Jail in Copenhagen, an Edwardian Library in Amsterdam and small, family owned Agritourismo’s on Italy’s Amalfi Coast.
• Take in snow-capped mountains and along icy-blue fjords on one of the world’s most scenic train journeys along Norway’s fjords from Oslo to Bergen.

Ultimately this journey is about expanding one’s worldview and building greater self-confidence and independence in our students.

Immersive Travel: A journey of thousands of miles begins with a single step

To us immersive travel means travelling the way locals do every day throughout Europe, by train, tram and ferry. Immersive travel means taking the time to be present on your journey, connect with your fellow travellers and expand your travel-IQ. These journeys by sea and rail will come to be some of your fondest memories and provide great time for conversation with fellow travellers. While passing through some of the world’s most spectacular landscapes you will also be learning how to navigate Europe by train and ferry, providing students with real-world life skills that will last far beyond the European Expedition Program. With the support and experience of the Irish Gap Year Program Leaders you will voyage well over 2,000 Kilometres by train, sail and ferry. You will experience many of Europe’s ‘must-see’ locations (and many places you’ve never heard of!), meet interesting people from all over the world and be absorbed in local culture. All while building your independence and travel skills along the way. Travel highlights include the Northern Railway that passes along fjords and mountains into Norway’s Arctic Circle, funiculars up steep mountain sides into the Austrian Alps, sailing in the azure waters of the Adriatic Sea along the Croatian coast, exploring Venice by ‘vaporetto’ and the overnight ferry from Oslo to Copenhagen. Suffice to say, that the skills, friendships and memories you develop on this journey will last a lifetime.

Cultural Exploration: Creating Connection

The meaningful exchange of ideas, sharing of backgrounds and creating connections across borders is at the heart of the European Expedition Program. Authentic cultural exchange happens when you take the time to slow down and connect with people along your journey. You will certainly meet some very interesting people on the European Expedition Program, from Norwegian kayakers and explorers, to Croatian boat captains, to Czech bushcrafters to fellow backpackers from all over the world. Our friends and the locals that we meet across Europe will open doors for our students to understand European culture and current events on a deeper level. Through this exchange students will become more aware of their own cultural identity and worldview, develop a knowledge of different cultural practices and attitudes and come away with a deeper understanding of themselves and Europe.

Experiential Learning: Hands-on & On-Site

An experiential education of the history, culture and current events of Europe means that our students will explore and connect first-hand with places that have helped shape the modern world. On-site lectures with local historians, touring castles, temples, ruins, UNESCO Heritage sites, medieval town squares and galleries are all examples of experiential learning opportunities that appeal to one’s genuine interest and a love of knowledge. Building new skill sets, such as independent travel, shopping and cooking, time management, proactive management of group dynamics and other ‘adulting skills’ that you will develop throughout the program are all examples of how the entire European Expedition Program becomes one big experience-based classroom without walls. As educators we understand the power that hands-on experience has and the impact that it leaves on our students. Through an experience-based education, your time spent on this program will not only help you develop into a more independent adult, but also act as a masterclass in the history, culture and current events of Europe.

Your education of European history and culture extends far beyond touring world-class museums and UNESCO sites (don’t get us wrong, we love those!). You will be surrounded by history, you will literally be able to reach out and touch history, climbing castles, clambering in ancient Viking cabins, wandering through cobbled, medieval mazes – You’ll the explore the lesser known nooks and crannies and connect in a way that is not possible by distance. The same is true for experiencing the wide variety of cultures that you will encounter during the program. Spending time with locals and exchanging ideas and insights over a meal or while touring their city will offer gappers unique insights into Europe’s many cultures.

Current Events

Students on our European Expedition Program will also discuss current events unfolding in Europe as we connect with locals, hosts and guides throughout our travels. Be prepared to have some of your preconceived ideas of Europe challenged as we get to know people from a wide variety of backgrounds. A few examples: • Spend time with Syrian refugees turned entrepreneurs touring Berlin through their eyes and learning about parallels between modern day Syria and 1930’s Germany. In the evening, our Syrian friends will host us at their house for a traditional Syrian meal and casual conversation to debrief on the day and get to know one another better. • Kayak Norway’s Arctic Circle where you will see the effects of climate change in real-time as you discuss with our local guides the glaciers recession and the changing climate in their region. • Learn how The Netherlands has manipulated sea-level change over the centuries to their advantage while we compare the difficulties being experienced by rising sea levels in Venice, Italy. • Learn about the breakup of the former Yugoslavia during the Balkan Wars in the 1990s and more particularly the Croatian War of Independence. We will also see first-hand how this has affected the geography and people of the region. Overall, students on the European Expedition Program will benefit from first-hand experience and knowledge of Europe’s history, culture and socio-political events. A knowledge that is only available to those who’ve invested their time and effort to travel the lands and meet the people with an open mind along the way.

Outdoor Adventure: Good for the body, mind and spirit

We are passionate about the outdoors and believe that time spent in nature is good for the body, mind and soul! On our European Expedition Program time in nature, national parks and in the country side is balanced with time in the bigger cities to allow gappers time to recharge their batteries. Nature will be a place for adventure, education and taking in spectacular scenery. The small towns and villages that are the gateways to Europe’s finest natural landscapes are among the most charming and beautiful locations on the program. We use outdoor activities and adventures to get students out into Europe’s epic landscapes, experiencing all there is to offer and allowing them to become immersed in these stunning environments. Outdoor adventure will also be used as a means of pushing your comfort zone and perceived limitations.

PART I NORDIC EXPLORER

Part i – nordic explorer.

You’ll experience some of Europe’s most astonishing nature and unique cultures as you travel by train, ferry and kayak in Norway and Denmark. A balance of time in nature, inspiring train travel and cultural exchange will give our gappers a wonderful introduction to Scandinavia and set the pace for the European Expedition Program.

You will kayak, hike and camp under glaciers and the northern lights in the dramatic fjords of western Norway, enjoy one of the world’s most scenic train trips from Oslo to Bergen and visit amazing museums, palaces and fortresses.

Your time in Norway and Copenhagen will be one of tranquillity and sereneness, of immersion in immense natural beauty and of personal growth. You will also leave Norway with a better understanding of the culture and of Norway’s contribution in shaping modern Europe.

PART II THE GRAND TOUR

Part ii – the grand tour.

The Grand Tour of Europe started as a rite of passage for young people in the 17th century and continues to this day (though now we call it back-packing!). Our fashion and music may have changed since those first Grand Tour travellers way back when but the purpose of this journey through mainland Europe remains. Exploration, inspiration and the search for knowledge of culture, history and the arts.

The ‘Grand Tour’ section gives you the opportunity to experience the joys of train travel and backpacking through Europe’s culture capitals, experiencing its multiplicity of cultures, food, scenery and people.

We’ll travel in style and comfort on the interrail train network from Germany to Holland to Czech Republic to Austria and finally to Venice and Slovenia. On this journey you will be building your travel IQ and skills while honouring the original Grand Tour values of knowledge, culture, exploration and inspiration.

Your time interrailing through Europe will be balanced with breaks in some of The Continent’s finest alpine national parks. Among the snow capped mountains and lush alpine meadows we will recharge our batteries while also exploring Europe’s natural beauty and heritage.

PART III SOUTHERN EUROPE BY SAIL, RAIL & BOOTS

Part iii – southern europe by sail, rail & boots.

During our time in southern Europe we will explore the enlivening charm and grandeur of Croatia and Dalmatian Islands and the Mediterranean coast of Italy by sailboat, kayak, on foot and by train.

This portion of the European Expedition Program offers insights into the culture of some of Europe’s most historically powerful and wealthy regions along with a healthy dose of outdoor adventuring that will expose you to some of the world’s most inspiring landscapes and coastlines.

Our intrepid gappers will spend a week sailing along Croatia’s Dalmatian Islands, exploring empty, golden-sand beaches and ancient coastal villages while enjoying amazingly fresh local food.

You will spend another glorious week trekking the Amalfi range of Italy’s Mediterranean coast, a pilgrim’s path that meanders from mountain villages through olive and lemon groves to coastal towns and along dramatic sea-cliffs. Don’t worry if you’re not a hiker, the walks are only about 10km/day and you’ll get to rest up in wonderful agri-tourismos (luxurious farm-stays, a tradition in Italy) and enjoy delightful Italian cuisine after a day outdoors.

PART IV ROLLING HILLS AND JAGGED PEAKS

Part iv – rolling hills & jagged peaks.

The final leg of our European Expedition will see our gappers enjoy a cultural ‘pick n mix’ of Italy and Bavaria as we travel through the Tuscany, Tyrol and Emilia-Romagna regions of Italy and finally onto Munich.

From rolling vineyards to mediaeval hilltop towns, to the imposing Italian Alps and lush national parks, to Bavarian beer halls and beyond, these regions offer a diverse experience of Italian and German cultures In Florence we will take in the wonders of the Italian Renaissance while learning about how the city influenced the course of history in Western Europe. Great food, great wine, inspiring art – In short, the good life!

From Florence we travel to Bologna, Northern Italy’s left-wing, university city and foody paradise. Home to fine historical buildings, many mediaeval towers centre and a unique balance of grittiness and elegance, Bologna is one of Italy’s hidden gems.

From Bologna we’ll make our way to Munich, everyone’s favourite German city and the final stop on our travels. In Munich we will sample Bavarian culture and tour one of Europe’s most magnificent palaces before parting ways from the journey of a lifetime.

Copenhagen: Scandinavia’s Most Fun Loving Capital

Copenhagen means ‘merchant’s harbour’ in Danish and everywhere you look in this vibrant city you’ll find canals, sail boats and brightly coloured merchants houses of old recalling the Copenhagen’s affluent maritime heritage. Modern Copenhagen achieves a world renowned balance of orderliness without rigidity. It is a city that honours and preserves its heritage while embracing modernity and of course is the embodiment of sleek Scandinavian design and architecture. While in Copenhagen we’ll be exploring the colourful and historical ‘Sailor’s Quarters’, the Stoget (old-town centre) and the cities thriving café’ and restaurant scene.

Oslo - Velkommen til Norge:

Our time in Norway starts in Oslo, the trendy and architecturally rich capital of Norway. We’ll get oriented with a walking tour of the City centre and learn about the history of Oslo as we explore the docks, the Akershus Fortress, The Viking Museum and Embassy row. You will have lunch in the city’s street food district and enjoy free time in the afternoon to settle in and explore the city for yourself. On our second day in Oslo you will walk along the water’s edge of Oslo Harbour to the King of Norway’s Castle and grounds, where one of our favourite museums in Norway is located - The Norwegian Folk museum. Here you will find original homes and buildings collected from all over the country, ranging from Viking log cabins from the 900s to 1950s farmhouses. you will have free rein to explore and connect with these amazing buildings. We will enjoy a group meal and time in one of our favourite Oslo bars on our final evening before we make our way west into the Fjords.

Bergen by way of Europe’s most scenic train journey

The train from Oslo to the western port city of Bergen has consistently been voted one of the world’s most magnificent train journeys. you will pass through lush regions with pristine rivers, lakes and snowy mountains eventually arriving at the fjord lands of south-western Norway. While in Bergen we will tour the colourful wooden houses of the old wharf in the downtown, learning about the Hanseatic League (once headquartered on this very old wharf) and its influence on the shaping of modern north European commerce and culture. We will then take the funicular to the top of the spectacular Fløyen Mountain and take in the vast views over the fjords and city below. Bergen will also provide you some much needed rest before and after our week-long kayaking and camping expedition through the fjords. Kayak-Camping Under the Northern Lights Your time kayaking and camping in the Norwegian Fjords will be something you will never forget and probably one of the most amazing awe inspiring of your life. On this 7-day kayaking, camping and hiking expedition through Norway’s fjords you will paddle your way through some of the world’s most striking landscapes. You will camp on beaches where Viking villages once thrived, eat and sleep under the stars as the northern lights dance overhead. On our expedition through the fjords we’ll hike to glaciers, zipline through gorges and learn about the effects of climate change at first-hand from Norwegian climate scientists. The kayak-camping expedition is where you push your limits. It is where you realize what you’re made of and it is where you will face true moments of realisation. Remember this program is designed for students who want to push themselves. You don’t need to be an ultra-fit, experienced outdoors-person to enjoy this expedition. All you need is a willingness to try, enthusiasm and a dash of determination.

Amsterdam: Art, Progressive Culture and of course Canals

Amsterdam is known for its rich artistic heritage, progressive culture, distinctive narrow gabled houses and elaborate canal system. Here you’ll explore the heart of Amsterdam with the local Dutchman, Julius, our friend, local historian and tour guide. You’ll discuss the very interesting and oftentimes dark history of the Netherlands as we spend a wonderful day walking the city. In true Irish Gap Year fashion, you’ll be venturing a bit off the beaten track in subsequent days as we cycle the beautiful islands and villages surrounding Amsterdam. On return explore the city’s vintage shops and take part in a ‘fishing for plastic’ tour of the city, where we will discuss the impact of plastics in the world's oceans while also learning about Holland's progressive environmental stance. As with all of the stops on our inter-railing journey, you will also have ample free-time to get out and self-explore all that Amsterdam has to offer.

Berlin: Iron Curtain to Cultural Wonderland

Divided by the Berlin wall in 1961, Berlin has had a tumultuous history. The fall of the wall and the city’s reunification in 1989 heralded the start of a creative and cultural regeneration which continues today. Berlin is a hub of creativity, industry and culture. The city expertly melds its difficult history with a new modern outlook. It’s easy to understand why Berlin is one of Europe’s most popular travel destinations. While in Berlin, you will have the opportunity to check out the city’s most iconic historical locations and explore the lesser known hotspots of Germany’s capital city. The Classics: The Berlin Wall and more specifically Checkpoint Charlie were the physical and ideological border that defined a generation of Berliners and infamous crossing point from East to West Berlin during the Cold War era. The Brandenburg Gate was built in the 18th century when the city was part of Prussia to represent the entrance to the city. It was appropriated by Nazis during World War II and badly damaged during the Allied bombardment of the city. After the fall of the Berlin Wall the east and west governments worked together to restore it and it now stands as a symbol of peace and reunification. The Reichstag Building is Germany’s national parliament building. It was severely damaged by fire during World War II. When Berlin became Germany’s new capital city this 19th century building was fantastically restored with an amazing modern addition which you will tour and hopefully parliament will be sitting on that day and you can have a peek at all the political heavyweights through the glass ceiling. Off the Beaten Track: Refugee Voices Tour is a powerful, controversial and moving tour of Berlin’s city centre as told by Syrian refugee guides. This tour speaks of Syria's own secret police, government repression, and natives fleeing for safer destinations, drawing parallels between modern day Syria and 1930s Germany. Following the tour, our Syrian friends will host us for a traditional dinner and conversation at their home. The Swimming Pool in the Spree is a harboured barge that functions as a swimming pool with unique panoramic view of the river Spree, the Oberbaumbrücke and Berlin’s iconic TV tower. Besides bathing, the beach area around the Badeschiff has become an urban recreational area and a focal point of urban culture and entertainment for many Berliners at any time of the day. The Urban Garden in Berlin is self-described as “a piece of nature in a concrete jungle”. You will visit the artisan cafes in these city centre organic gardens where trendy Berliners like to hangout. The Prinzipal Bar allows you to drink in the past in this real life 1920s speakeasy. The Prinzipal Bar is typical of pre-war Germany and has become an underground icon of Berlin in recent years.

Prague: Medieval Europe at its Finest

A thousand shades of terracotta, hundreds of spires reaching for the blue sky, colourful baroque buildings leading from one medieval town square to another, the sound of church bells ringing out as they’ve done for hundreds of years. Prague is a bohemian fairy tale. Our visit to the capital city of the Czech Republic will be a dive into the past. You will visit the old town square, tour the Prague Castle and enjoy the show that’s been going on since 1402 at the medieval astronomical clock. We will also speak with locals about Prague’s recent history and the Prague Spring movement and the velvet revolution in 1989 as the former Soviet Union collapsed. Of course, no time in Prague is complete without a visit to a beer hall for a tasty dish of Vep'o knedlo zelo (roasted pork)

Salzburg: Baroque Architecture and Austrian Culture at its Finest

Salzburg is a magnificent city of antiquity and grandeur nestled on the Salzach River in the Austrian Alps. Its cobble stoned streets, lined with medieval and baroque buildings and surrounded by snow-capped alpine peaks makes this city impossibly picturesque, as if it’s sprung straight from a fairy tale. The city centre (A UNESCO World Heritage Site) is one of the best-preserved old town centres in all of Europe and feels very much like a fairy-tale setting. You will tour the enchanting city and the surrounding countryside, exploring the striking 1,000-year-old Salzburg Fortress and learning about its significance in Austrian history, touring the Old Town Centre, cruising the Salzach River by power-boat, admiring the ornate intricacy of St. Peter’s Abbey and visiting one of Austria’s best outdoor markets.

Zell am See: Adventure in the Heart of the Austrian Alps

Zell am See is a small Austrian town located on Lake Zell, in the heart of the Austrian Alps. Surrounded on all sides by towering, forested and snow-capped mountains, Zell am See is a place of great natural beauty and a mecca for outdoor adventure. The town offers excellent alpine hiking, water-sports on the lake and rural Austrian culture. There are many excellent cafés, traditional beer halls and shops in the area. We will be staying in a traditional, mountainside, Austrian chalet close to the town centre and the start of mountain trails. We’ll cycle around the lake, stopping in the nearby villages to explore castles and learning about the local history, we will tour the infamous ‘Eagles Nest’ located nearby, learn about Austria’s role in WWII and enjoy easy hikes in the mountains and gorges that surround Zell am See.

Florence: Epicentre of the Renaissance

Florence is the capital of the Tuscany Region of Italy and is home to exquisite art and architecture harking back to the Renaissance. Wherever one goes in Florence they are reminded of the power, sophistication and genius that flowed from here to the rest of Europe from the 14th to 17th Century. While in Florence we will explore lavish Medici palaces, original sculptures by Michelangelo and strolling the cities many squares and pedestrian friendly streets.

Venice: The Floating City

Built on over 100 small islands, Venice is home to more beautiful canals, Gothic Palaces, Basilicas and impressive architecture than just about any other European City. We will be staying at the Generator Hostel right on the water’s edge in the city centre of Venice. This smartly converted 18th century public library comes with amazing views of the city and plenty of other like-minded travellers to socialize with. While in Venice we will be discussing the issue of climate change and the impending threat to Venice as sea-levels rise. You will have the opportunity to compare the Venetian approach to the issue as compared to other European cities you’ve visited on the program. Our time in Venice will also include walking tours giving you an overview of Venetian history, a day-trip to the nearby island city of Burano to take in its amazing sights and culinary delights. You will be able to have lots of delicious meals, plenty of free time for you to get lost in the amazing labyrinth that is Venice and take a trip to Venetians’ favourite outdoor market for lovely fresh foods. You will also take part in our very own ‘Venice Challenge’.

Learning to Sail: A timeless journey on Croatia’s Dalmatian Coast

Your journey into southern Europe begins with the beautiful train ride from Venice to the coastal city of Split, on Croatia’s Dalmatian Coast. We have chartered the group’s own yachts and you will set sail from Spilt island hopping along the coast to the capital city of Dubrovnik. The yachts each have an experienced, local skipper who will teach you the basics of seamanship and sailing. It will literally be all hands on deck as you glide through the azure waters of the Dalmatian Coast and Adriatic Sea. You will learn to cook fresh Croatian cuisine and you will receive an in-depth, first-hand education on the history of Croatia and the Adriatic Sea from our Croatian skippers. you will be living, eating and sleeping on these boats as we make our way south from Split to Dubrovnik. On our way, you will anchor in the evenings in harbours on the islands either making our way into coastal villages or enjoying the secluded, spectacular beaches of the coves all to ourselves. After a glorious, educational and adventurous week on the sea you will say goodbye to our skippers and our sea legs as we arrive at the medieval port-city of Dubrovnik.

Slovenia is one of Europe’s most under-rated, enchanting and beautiful countries. At the intersection of Salvic, Germanic and Italian culture, Slovenia presents each country's finest qualities. While in Slovenia we’ll be balancing our time between visiting the capital city of Ljubljana and the spectacularly beautiful Lake Bled. Known as one of Europe’s greenest and cleanest cities, Ljubljana is also renowned for the picturesque architecture in its beautiful old town centre, its many museums and as a gateway to some of Europe’s finest national parks and nature reserves. We’ll base ourselves in the charming town of Bled for the back half of our time in Slovenia. This nature-lovers paradise is the perfect home-base for exploring the region's abundant natural beauty. While in Bled we’ll SUP (or ice skate depending on the time of year!) on the lake, explore the dramatic gorges and alpine rivers and recharge our batteries from our train travels.

Dubrovnik: Fairy tale city and ancient empire

The City of Dubrovnik sits on the warm, shimmering waters of the Adriatic Sea where its ancient, fortress walls have protected her position of wealth, sophistication and progression since the times of the Byzantine Empire. Entering the Old City of Dubrovnik is like stepping back in time a thousand years, to another world where you can reach out in any direction and touch history. As is often the case, fact is far more interesting than fiction when it comes to Dubrovnik. Its recent popularization as a film location for the Game of Thrones series pales in comparison to the incredibly rich history of the city. While in Dubrovnik we will be touring the city with local guides and learning about the city’s ancient past, recent conflict and status as a UNESCO World Heritage city. We’ll discuss with our local guides and hosts the evolution of Dubrovnik’s identity in recent times along with the Croatian War of Independence during the 1990’s. We will also explore the magnificent palaces, fortresses and cathedrals built by an ancient society that rivalled Venice for the control of commerce in the Adriatic Sea. The group will kayak out to beautiful island of Otok Lorum just 2 kms from Dubrovnik Dubrovnik is always a favourite destination among European travellers and for good reason. Visually Dubrovnik is a feast for the senses with its red terracotta rooftops, the glistening Adriatic Sea under its giant medieval city walls, narrow cobblestone streets and cathedrals around every corner. Our students will take more than just memories and great photos with them from Dubrovnik though. We aim to delve into the city’s influential past in the shaping of southern Europe, its modern history of conflict and resolution and emergence as a peaceful and vibrant modern city.

Amalfi Coast: A Unique Journey along the Shimmering Mediterranean Sea

The stunning Amalfi Coast along Southern Italy’s Mediterranean has been a popular destination for travellers since the time of the Romans and Greeks. Here the azure waters of the Mediterranean meet colourful town and villages set against the backdrop of sea cliffs and lush mountains. We will be exploring the region on a pilgrimage of sorts (non-religious, but inspiring, insightful and on foot!) as we walk this UNESCO listed landscape over 8 days. Our trail will meander through rugged mountain scenery along ancient paths winding through picturesque countryside dotted with chestnut forests, terraced lemon and olive groves, medieval churches and vineyards. We will explore ruins of castles and bright, charming fishing villages as the trail dips into the coastal towns of Amalfi and Praiano. While on our Amalfi coastal trek we will be staying in homestays and farmsteads, providing our students with an authentic experience of this truly magnificent region of Italy. Don’t worry if you are not a big hiker, we will be averaging just 10km/day.

Hamburg: A Modern German City

Hamburg is Germany’s second largest city and boasts a vibrant water-front, celebrated arts district and lively counter-culture. Despite this, Hamburg is rarely atop international visitors lists of places to visit in Germany. While in Hamburg we will explore the Reeperbahn (arts district), seeking out live music, we’ll check out WWII bunkers that once housed Nazi strongholds and are now home to museums, café’s and clubs and we’ll visit the Shanze district, Hamburg’s fun-loving, counter culture hub.

Munich: Bastion of Bavarian Culture

Munich is just about every German’s favourite city and for good reason. This fun-loving, unabashed bastion of Bavarian culture is home to some of Europe's most ornate palaces, romantic castles, suddy beer halls and giant pretzels - All of which we will be sampling while in Munich! Munich embraces its tradition with zest, but it is also a cutting edge, modern city. Home to Germany’s ‘glitterati’, tech scene and one of Europe's major economic powerhouses Munich is a must-see location on the grand tour of Europe.

A Day in the Life of our European Expedition Program

 There’s a lot of variety on our European Expedition Program. What a ‘typical’ day looks like depends on whether you’re sailing, kayaking, traveling by train or exploring a city. That said, nearly every day begins at 9am with a group breakfast and daily brief, followed by a morning activity and short bit of free time for lunch. We then have an afternoon activity from about 2pm to 5pm, some free time and a group dinner around 7pm followed by free time in the evening. Here is one example of typical day in Berlin on our European Expedition Program:

9am: Group breakfast at a café and briefing with the Program Leaders on the day’s plans. 10am -1pm: Refugee Voices Walking Tour: See Berlin’s infamous WWII era sites through the eyes of a former Syrian refugee, drawing parallels between Nazi Germany and modern day Syria. 1pm – 2pm: Free time for lunch in the Urban Garden. 2pm – 5pm: Cycle to Berlin Spy Museum and tour the museum. 5 – 7pm: Free time at the hostel 7pm: Home-made dinner at Akmed’s house with our Syrian friends for an evening of conversation and delicious food. 9pm: Back to hostel and free time 12pm: Curfew

For all that, and even with the Paris Olympics on the banks of the River Seine and Emily In Paris on Netflix, it didn’t seem that busy.

I’m conscious of the whole conversation about how many people are travelling to and within Europe, and about over-tourism in some key spots, of course.

But on the banks of the Seine, walking through the pretty Belgium town of Ghent, on a river cruise on the Danube or Maine, on a beach in Normandy or even wondering around ever-busy Athens on a warm evening with the local musicians playing and singing … well, it just doesn’t feel like that.

Would I go to Europe in 2025? Absolutely.

Come to that, would I go to France again in 2025? A bsolument.

France, as the ultimate example, just seems to absorb all-comers, while retaining its flavour and culture — the very things we travel there to enjoy.

Part of that can be put down to the very way France is “structured”; divided administratively into regions, departments and communes. For all its internationalism, France is very local. In the regions, people still shop at local markets — there are still more than 10,000 traditional markets in the country. People come with baskets to shop for dinner in the open air, be it in a small town, or the centre of Marseille, Nice, Lyon or Paris. Many markets have been held in the same spot every week for many hundreds of years.

Behind France, Spain which receives more than 85 million visitors a year (to the annoyance of some Spaniards), Italy (getting on for 60 million) and Turkey (more than 55 million).

WHERE WE’RE AT NOW

At this moment, there are two main things to think about — if, indeed, you are thinking about travelling to Europe in 2025.

The first is that there is a lot to choose from and book now, and a lot of people are doing just that. So, focus on it now if you want choice.

The second is that, running (seemingly a little oddly) parallel to that, there have already been some good offers for travel to Europe in 2025; there are some out now and more to come.

A lot of the offers have a cruise, particularly in the Mediterranean, as a substantial part of the package. That’s how they get a very competitive price, just “topping and tailing it” with a couple of nights at a hotel either end. You could be looking at a 14-night fly, stay and cruise holiday from $5990 per person.

As I write, I’m looking at a 29-night touring itinerary, with time exploring England and Ireland, before taking off on the continent to Italy and back, from $8280 per person, including flights, all travel and accommodation.

Both of those are MyCruises packages sold through Flight Centre — which makes the point, that a travel agent is still a good place to start, as are the advertisements in these pages. And I will also add that I haven’t gone into details of those two specific holidays as they are just examples — and it also makes the point that things are pretty fluid. What is available this week may not be next week, but there will be other packages launched in the meantime.

In other words, if you see something that fits the bill, make the decision and book it.

The same with air travel. Where we were paying over $3000 for economy return air flights to Europe last year, deals are coming through in the $1500s and even $1300s. But these “sales” are usually just for a few days.

It’s quite difficult marrying all that up. But, if you are a “do it yourself” traveller and cost-conscious, it is probably a good point to lock in flights, then build the holiday between those dates.

AIRFARE TIPS

Be flexible If you see a sale, be ready to take the flight and the dates that are offered, then “fill the dates in between” with your holiday.

Be flexible Manchester might be a better than option than London Heathrow. There might be a good price to Lyon in France, as an airline tries to “push” a route. Maybe that’s a good place to start, rather than Paris.

Be flexible Look and book now. For many airlines, you can book 11 months in advance.

GETTING AROUND BY TRAIN

The continuing development of rail travel is a central focus in Europe.

It is certainly at the heart of European Union thinking and policy. The EU’s Action Plan to boost long-distance and cross-border passenger rail services is fundamental to these efforts. Its aim is to double high-speed rail traffic by 2030 and triple it by 2050.

But the Action Plan’s focus isn’t just in modernising passenger rail infrastructure, but improving services across EU countries.

A high level EU spokesperson tells us: “Travelling by train in Europe is becoming more convenient and sustainable thanks to recent EU initiatives.

“New regulations for the Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T) to improve rail connectivity and make travel greener have recently entered into force. This means better and more efficient rail services across Europe.”

The EU recently announced that it is backing 10 pilot projects to boost cross-border rail services. This means better connections between countries, making travel faster, easier and more affordable.

Should you buy a rail pass well in advance or simply get a ticket when you get there? That depends on how much train travel you plan to do, and how committed you are to dates for that travel.

It’s simply a matter of mathematics. Take a good look through, for example, the Eurail passes, and see what fits your plans. These are continuing to develop — for example with the Eurail One Country Pass: France starts from $US83 ($123) and Italy from $US157 ($232). A Eurail Global Pass, for travel in two or more countries, for five days travel within a month is from $US261 ($385).

But if you are planning to just catch a train when you need it, I’ll leave you to navigate the ticket machine at the station.

Just a word of advice. Most train tickets will give you the carriage and seat number. Arrive early at the station, look up and read the signs above you, work out where you should be standing, and get in through the correct door.

Here are just a few rail ideas …

+ The Eurostar travels from London through the Channel Tunnel to France, and there are now lots of options from there. In a European Sleeper, it takes under 12 hours to travel from Brussels to Berlin.

+ Travel from Paris to Vienna with OBB Nightjet. You can now book a sleeper cabin, so maybe continue to Italy and Croatia.

+ Renfe, Spain’s national rail operator, has a high-speed train link with France.

+ Italy’s state-owned railway Trenitalia has a high-speed service between Paris and Barcelona, and Madrid.

ETIAS IS COMING

We’re used to travelling to most of Europe with just our Australian passports, but a new ETIAS system is being introduced in 2025, and it means we will need to apply for a visa before arriving.

It’s scheduled to come into effect in the first half of 2025. As we went to press, the actual start date hadn’t been finalised (but we will report that in these pages when it is).

The ETIAS visa will cost €7 (about $11.50), be linked to your Australian passport, cover 30 countries, and be valid for up to three years. Applications can be made online (etias.com) or through the ETIAS app. It usually takes just a few minutes to be approved.

And that visa allows travellers to enter member countries for up to 90 days in any 180-day period.

The countries covered by this visa are: Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland.

CYCLE TOURING

This is one of the biggest (and still growing) travel trends in Europe.

Riders pedal from village to village, often following rivers, staying in accommodation each night and with luggage moved to the next place while they ride with just their daily needs.

There are now well over 250 self-guided European cycle tours that can be booked as a package. You’ll get a hire bicycle, accommodation, luggage transfers, itinerary and maps.

To give just one example, EuroVelo is a network of 17 long-distance cycling routes across Europe. It is still under development and expanding. When complete, there will be 90,000km of EuroVelo routes.

+ The Loire River Valley — EuroVelo 6 route from Orleans to Nantes.

+ French countryside, Dieppe to Paris.

It will still be our biggest European arrival point in 2025. London still has everything going for it, from free museums and art galleries to parks and plenty of history.

NORTHERN LIGHTS

Aurora borealis — best season from December to March. Head for the Svalbard archipelago off the north of Norway, Finland, Iceland and Greenland.

SCANDINAVIA

Cruising the Norwegian fjords, having some time in the fishing town of Bergen and the beautiful capital of Denmark, Copenhagen.

It is raw, spectacular, and the Ring Road to Seljalandsfoss, Skogafoss waterfalls, Dyrholaey cliffs and Jokulsarlon glacier lagoon is surely one of the great drives.

Coffee and croissant for breakfast outside a local cafe, a few hours in the Musee d’Orsay and an evening walk along the Seine by the Eiffel Tower. A perfect day.

Ornate white buildings give it a birthday-cake quality. Viennese coffee shops, Schonbrunn Palace (home of Empress Sisi) in this city of music.

This pretty walled city in northern Italy (one of the best-preserved walled cities in Europe, and dating back to 1220), is only three hours drive from Milan or Florence, and 60km from Venice.

Often overlooked, this spot in Spain has a medieval past but a contemporary cultural face. The Romans built here in the 2nd century. It is 30 minutes from Madrid by train.

A few days in Athens and then out to the Greek Islands. Fresh local food steeped in history. Completely brilliant.
