Sightseeing pleasure cruise boats, lunch and dinner cruises, and passenger ferries sail on Lake Geneva with frequent departures from Genève, Lausanne, Montreux, Evian, Nyon, and smaller towns.

Lake Geneva (Lac Léman) is the largest lake in Switzerland and France. As one of the largest bodies of fresh water in Europe, pleasure cruises are not surprisingly very popular. Many of the is touristic boat excursions on Lake Geneva are on elegant pre-First World War Belle Epoque era paddle steamers. Passenger ferries provide important public transportation links between French and Swiss towns such as Lausanne-Evian and Nyon-Yvoire while small waterbus services connect parts of Geneva city. Recreational boating is also possible with rental boats and equipment available in most large towns.

Pleasure Boat Cruises on Lake Geneva in Switzerland and France

Tourists have been enjoying pleasure cruises on Lake Geneva for well over a century. Many of the day cruise boats on Lac Léman are Belle Époque paddle steamers in a two-class configuration. The Montreux (built 1904) is the oldest boat in regular operation while the elegant La Suisse (1910) is the grande dame of the CGN fleet.

The Compagnie Générale de Navigation sure le Lac Léman, better known by the acronym CGN , has the monopoly on most boat transportation links on Lake Geneva. In Geneva and some other towns cruises on further operators are possible but only CGN boats may drop passengers off at a port other than the original departure point.

Best Lake Geneva Pleasure Cruises

CGN’s major ports of departure are Genève, Lausanne-Ouchy , and Vevey but boats often stop in smaller towns, especially on the Swiss northern shore of Lake Geneva. Regular boat cruises sail from mid-April to mid-October. The largest number of departures is in summer (mid-June to mid-September). During the shoulder seasons – spring (mid-April to mid-June) and autumn (mid-September to mid-October) lake cruises are available daily but with a much busier schedule on weekends. During winter , apart from the ferries, regular cruises are available mostly on Sundays only and for fondue dinner cruises on Thursday and Friday evenings.

A cruise from Geneva to Lausanne takes over three hours while Lausanne to Montreux on the slow boat is around two hours. The number of stops is the main determining factor in the time required between ports. Using the train one way can be much faster if time is limited.

Passenger Ferries on Lake Geneva between Switzerland and France

Passenger ferries operate year-round on Lac Léman between Swiss and French towns. These passenger ferries are an integral part of public transportation in the Lake Geneva region. No car ferries operate on Lake Geneva.

Passenger ferries operate on three routes on Lake Geneva between Switzerland and France:

• Lausanne – Evian (35 minutes, 26 times per day)
• Lausanne – Thonon (50 minutes, 28 times per day)
• Nyon – Yvoire (20 minutes, 35 times per day)

Passenger ferries are often the best way to travel to these French towns as regular train and bus services on the southern French side of Lac Léman are limited. However, the Léman Express network improved services from Evian and Thonon to Geneva city.

Passenger ferries are also the only way to cruise on Lake Geneva on most days during the winter season .

Mouette Waterbuses in Genève

The cheapest way to cruise on Lake Geneva is to use the mouette waterbuses ( Mouettes Genevoises )  in Geneva city.

The Mouettes operate on four routes between Geneva’s left and right banks. Crossing the lake here takes only a few minutes.

The Mouettes are part of Geneva’s public transportation network and all regular tickets, including Tout Genève and day passes, are valid.

Recreational boating is also very popular on Lake Geneva. Boats – including powerboats, yachts, kayaks, windsurfers, and pedalo pedal boats can be rented in many large towns including Lausanne-Ouchy and Nyon.

The Belle Époque boats have been navigating Central Europe’s largest inland lake for 140 years and offer fantastic cruises between France and Switzerland. Lake Geneva Cruise Line

Founded in 1873, Lake Geneva Cruise Line is deeply rooted in the history of Lake Geneva. Our fleet of eight classic boats from a variety of historical eras, gets locals and visitors out on the water! We offer a wide variety of boat tours including narrated scenic tours; brunch, lunch, and dinner cruises; and private parties.

May through October you will find us at the Riviera Docks in Lake Geneva. Tours run daily, and tickets can be purchased from our ticket boat on the docks or online. Popular tours include our Geneva Bay tour featuring breathtaking historical estates, our US Mailboat tour including mail jumpers delivering the mail to lake homes, and our Fall Foliage tour flaunting beautiful fall colors.

Late November and December you will find us at our winter harbor in Williams Bay. We celebrate the holiday season with families as we cruise over to Santa’s Hideaway aboard our Santa Cruise.

Our boats cruise May through December, but our office is open year-round as we help families, couples, and businesses plan private parties, weddings, and corporate outings.

Is this a good tour for kids.

We recommend the Black Point Tour for guests 12 years of age and over. This tour is 3 1⁄2 hours in length and does involve walking, stair climbing, and attention to a docent guided tour throughout. The Best of the Lake Cruise or the Ice Cream Social Cruise are best for children because of the shorter length of the tour. As with all of our tours, there is a live narration so passengers are still asked to be respectful of others who are there to enjoy the guided tour.

Are there any discounts on this tour?

We offer AAA, Preferred Guest with local hotels, and military discounts. (One discount per transaction.) We also offer an additional discount for senior guests on Tuesdays.  View our specials and promos here.

Can we bring snacks on board the boat?

We offer a full Snack Bar and Cash Bar with items such as chips, candy, and soft drinks. If you bring  a small snack to hold you over during the tour that is fine, but we do not allow full meals and we do not allow coolers. ON THE BLACK POINT TOUR ANYTHING YOU BRING ON BOARD MUST BE ABLE TO BE CARRIED WITH YOU DURING THE ENTIRE TOUR. THE BOAT DOES NOT ALWAYS STAY AT THE DOCK WHILE GUESTS ARE TOURING THE ESTATE. No alcohol is permitted to be brought on board because we have liquor licenses on all the boats.

Can I bring a stroller?

We are not able to accommodate a stroller on this tour.

Is the boat wheelchair accessible?

Please contact the Lake Geneva Cruise Line reservation office for details on handicapped access for the Black Point Tour.

Please note: The Black Point Estate is located on a bluff overlooking Geneva Lake. There are a series of approximately 100 stairs and landings from the pier to the house which all visitors must be able to negotiate. We recommend this tour only for those comfortable walking and climbing stairs.
