Mystic is an adorable little waterfront town along the Mystic River, and it’s become famous over the years from popular movies like Mystic Pizza . But there’s so much to see and do in this charming little town beyond living out your favorite movie moments, and they all make Mystic, CT worth visiting.

From awesome restaurants and seafood shacks, to an idyllic Main Street for an afternoon of shopping, to an incredible maritimes museum and aquarium, you’ll have your pick of so much to do in Mystic, and it even makes my list of the best places to see in New England .

Is Mystic, CT Worth Visiting?

Mystic, CT is absolutely worth visiting! Mystic is home to some amazing shops, restaurants, waterfront areas to explore and lots of New England charm. With great things to do like the Mystic Seaport Museum and Village, nearby parks, museums, vineyards and the picturesque, neighboring town of Stonington, there are so many things to experience that will make for a perfect day trip or weekend getaway.

Best Things To Do That Make Mystic, CT Worth Visiting

If you’re trying to decide what to do in Mystic, CT, I’ve put together a list of all the best attractions and things to do that make Mystic worth visiting, and hopefully this list will help you plan the perfect itinerary.

1. Explore The Mystic Seaport Museum

The most popular thing to do in Mystic, CT is the Seaport Museum , which includes a historic village, museums, a working ship yard, a marina and rotating exhibits. Beginning in the 1600s, Mystic was known as the country’s leading shipbuilding region, with over 600 vessels constructed over the course of 300 years. The exhibits and knowledgeable staff do an incredible job showcasing this fascinating part of the town’s history.

Be sure to explore the village grounds, which were designed to bring 19th century Maritimes history back to life for all to experience. Each historic building was original to New England, used as a shop or business in the 1800’s, and transported to the Seaport Village to showcase different seafaring trades.

Another can’t-miss stop at the museum is the Charles W. Morgan, the last wooden whaling ship in the entire world. Visitors are able to climb aboard into the ship, and feel what it would have been like to be a part of the crew.

Inside the Seaport Village, you’ll also find a replica of Nantucket’s Brant Point Lighthouse, which looks out over Mystic River.

There are even opportunities to get out onto the water at the Seaport! Included with your admission ticket, you can take out a rowboat to cruise around the river on your own. Can You Walk Around Mystic Seaport For Free?

No, there is a general admission charge for anyone over the age of 3 to explore the Mystic Seaport Museum and Village (children 3 and under are free).

From July 1 – September 6, children ages 18 and younger, along with one accompanying adult, can get free admission if they are Connecticut residents as part of the Connecticut Summer at the Museum program. Click here to visit the museum’s website for more information .

Parking at the museum, however, is completely free.

2. Stroll Through Downtown

The downtown area sits along the river, and is filled with beautiful shops, bakeries, cafes and restaurants, and is really fun to stroll through.

It’s almost worth visiting Mystic, CT just to check out some of the local bakeries. Be sure to swing by Young Buns Doughnuts for a blueberry cake donut and Sift Bakery for some authentic French macarons. Sift Bakery is a whole destination on its own, serving up amazing sandwiches, baked goods and all kinds of desserts, and shares its storefront with Mix, a cocktail bar. There’s usually a line out the door here, especially on weekends, but it’s definitely worth the wait.

3. Hit The Trails At Bluff Point State Park

While technically located in the nearby town of Groton, CT, Bluff Point State Park is only a short 15 minute drive from Mystic, and a great place for a relaxing walk on one of the nature trails.

Along Long Island Sound, you’ll find the Coastal Reserve Trail at this park, which is a 3.6 loop trail that’s very easy, and provides wonderful views of the water. If you visit on a warm summer day, you’ll also pass by beaches that are perfect for swimming along the trail.

4. Explore The Mystic Aquarium

At the Mystic Aquarium , you’ll get the chance to see beluga whales, sea lions, penguins, sharks, and tons of different kinds of jelly fish, which makes Mystic, CT worth visiting just for this excursion alone.

Since 1975, the Mystic Aquarium has been rehabilitating and releasing injured marine animals along the Connecticut and Rhode Island coastline. While visiting the aquarium, you’ll be able to take a peak inside their Rescue Clinic and get a glimpse into the important work they do to help preserve our native animals.

5. Visit The Mystic Museum of Art

The Mystic Museum of Art was created in 1913 by a local artist colony, and today, is a free museum for all to enjoy. Not only does the museum have a permanent collection of over 250 pieces on display, they also feature different rotating exhibits throughout the year, and have beautifully manicured gardens for visitors to enjoy.

The museum is small, and you likely won’t need more than 1-2 hours here. But if you love art, this is a great place that makes Mystic, CT worth visiting.

6. Shop & Dine At Olde Mistick Village

Just under 2 miles from downtown Mystic is Olde Mistick Village, which is a cluster of over 50 really adorable shops and cafes, centered around a beautiful pond, making this one of the best things to do in Mystic.

Once destined to be a shopping mall, the little village that stands today was built in the 1970s, and was inspired by the 1700s Colonial period. It was designed so that no two buildings were alike, and that it was a destination in and of itself.

With unique shops and eateries, this is such a fun place to experience that makes Mystic, CT worth visiting. Here are some of the best places to check out when in the Olde Mistick Village:

• The Cloak & Wand – A unique place for Harry Potter fan, and those with an interest in magic. They also have a really cool “potion” bar here, where they serve up custom hot chocolate drinks, and fun, cold soda drinks with a mystical twist.
• Alice In The Village – A wonderful tea room and gift shop inspired by the original Lewis Carrol storybook.
• Munson’s Chocolates – An amazing chocolate store with several locations throughout Connecticut, but this shop in particular in especially fun to visit.
• Franklin’s General Store – A New England-inspired general store that is so much fun to walk around, and packed with tons of charm. You’ll find everything a true general store should have including candy, kid’s toys, apparel, specialty foods, a fudge shop and tons more.

Olde Mistik Village is also home to some great restaurants, making this a place you could definitely spend a half day or more.

7. Book A Seaside Shadows Haunted Tours of Mystic

If you’re looking to add something spooky to your itinerary, it’s worth visiting Mystic, CT to go on a Seaside Shadows Haunted Tour .

You can actually choose a few different tour options in Mystic, including a downtown ghost tour, a whiskey pub crawl with ghost stories and a haunted ghost boat tour. Regardless of the tour you pick, you’ll hear stories of ghost sightings and tales of the town’s dark history, and gets lots of goosebumps along the way.

8. Taste The Wine At Saltwater Farm Vineyard

Saltwater Farm Vineyard renovated an old airplane hanger into a gorgeous tasting room overlooking their rows of vines, making this one of the best things to in Mystic, CT. Located in nearby Stonington, this vineyard is only a short 10 minute drive from downtown Mystic, but you’ll feel like you escaped to Napa Valley.

This vineyard specialized in small-batch estate wines using French techniques. If visiting in the warmer months, be sure to try their Cabernet Rose, which is perfectly refreshing on a summer day.

As of 2022, Saltwater Farm Vineyard is not offering tastings, but only doing wines by the bottle or glass. Be sure to check their website for up-to-date information if you’re looking to do a tasting. The vineyard allows you to bring your own snacks and food, so it’s worth making an afternoon of it, and packing some fruits, cheeses and crackers to enjoy with your wine.

9. Set Sail On The Last Remaining Commercial Ship In Mystic

If you’re not planning to visit the Mystic Seaport Museum, but still want to head out onto the water, be sure to book a tour with Argia Mystic Cruises . Argia is the last commercial ship in Mystic, making this one of the best things to do!

Visitors can choose between public and private sails May through October, and includes options for morning, afternoon and sunset charters. You’re also welcome to bring a bottle of wine or some beer aboard, along with light snacks.

10. Visit BF Clyde’s Cider Mill

If you happen to visit in the fall season, a stop at BF Cyde’s Cider Mill makes Mystic, CT worth visiting. This is the very last steam-powered cider mill left in the U.S., and they produce everything from cider donuts and hard cider, to sweet, fresh-pressed cider and caramel apples.

While visiting, you’ll also be able to see the steam-powered press in action, and pick-up some locally made and produced products like fresh honey, as well as unique homegoods and gifts.

11. Grab A Slice Of Mystic Pizza

If you’re a fan of the movie (and I’m definitely a fan) then you should probably stop and get a slice at Mystic Pizza during your visit to live out your movie moment.

Now, here’s the thing – this is a really fun stop that makes Mystic, CT worth visiting, but this is not the original building from the movie. In the movie Mystic Pizza, they actually filmed the restaurant scenes in a different building. And, the pizza isn’t amazing (it’s not bad by any means, it’s just not going to be life-changing).

But, all that said, the existing restaurant pays a lot of homage to the movie, and has a similar feel, including a “Slice of Heaven” sign, which is honestly pretty great. And the best part is, the pizza is actually really good! Many people assume that the pizza will be average or not great, but this place gets major bonus points for being an experience, in addition to serving up some awesome food.

12. Explore Stonington

An interesting thing about Mystic is that it’s not technically a recognized town. Confused? Me too, so I had to look it up because I had no idea. Mystic, CT is actually a village inside Stonington, and Stonington is divided into four villages. The others being Old Mystic, Pawcatuck and Stonington Borough.

The great thing about visiting Mystic, though, is because of this, you get two beautiful towns to explore in one trip. Stonington is only a 10-15 minute drive from downtown Mystic, and is also full of charm, great restaurants and shops.

Just strolling through Stonington’s streets is enough to make the venture worth it, but be sure to pop into some of the locally-owned businesses for unique finds and delicious food.

13. Taste The Wine At Stonington Vineyards

Another great vineyard to visit in the area is Stonington Vineyards , which can be found a short 10-minute drive from downtown Stonington.

This vineyard offers tastings, wines by the glass and bottles for purchase, and encourages visitors to bring their own picnics and spend the day overlooking their rows of vines. Stonington Vineyards is known for their European table-style wines, many of which have won awards over the years.

I’m a big fan of their Resiling on a warm day, but all the wines I’ve tried here have been great, and make Mystic, CT worth visiting just for an afternoon of wine tasting.

14. Explore Ender’s Island

One of the more unique things to do in Mystic is to head over to Ender’s Island, which is an 11-acre island designed to be a Catholic retreat destination. While you don’t need a lot of time here if just visiting, because it’s such a short drive from Mystic, it’s still worth exploring for an hour or two.

If you’re not religious, this is still a gorgeous place to visit. Surrounded by views of the Atlantic and beautiful gardens to meander through, it’s a wonderful and quiet escape to consider making during your trip.

Ender’s Island is open to the public. While getting there, your GPS will lead you down a route that involves passing a sign that says “No Trespassing – Private Road.” Sometimes, there may be a security guard at the gate, and you can just let them know you’re visiting Ender’s Island, and they will allow you to pass. If there’s no guard, you’re welcome to continue on until you arrive on the island.

15. Get A Lobster Roll At Ford’s

One of the best things to do in Mystic, CT is to head over to Ford’s for one of their amazing lobster rolls. Located in Noank, which is only 10-15 minutes from downtown Mystic, Ford’s serves up fresh seafood in a casual setting right by the water. And with probably the most charming buoy-covered shack in all of Connecticut, it also makes for great scenery.

Ford’s offers both indoor and outdoor seating, as well as take-out. They don’t take reservations, and also get very busy in the summer season, so plan accordingly.

16. Taste The Local Beer

There are a couple of really great breweries that make Mystic, CT worth visiting.

Bank & Bridge Brewing is located in the heart of downtown Mystic in a gorgeous building that used to be, as you probably guessed, an old bank. With their own beer on tap, as well as cans to-go, and an awesome food menu packed with comfort food favorites, this one is not to be missed. The outdoor patio is also dog-friendly.

A short walk from Bank & Bridge, and you’ll find Barley Head Brewery . Here you’ll find tastings and pints of their own beers, as well as local wines and cider available. They invite visitors to bring their own snacks, and have hot pretzels available to purchase.

17. Grab A Cone At Mystic Drawbridge Ice Cream

One of the best things to do in Mystic, CT is to get some homemade ice cream at Mystic Drawbridge Ice Cream . With tons of delicious flavors to choose from, and a perfect location right at the bridge i the heart of downtown, this is the perfect stop to make when you’ve just got a craving for ice cream.

Once you grab your cone, head on over to the riverfront for a scenic walk while you eat.

18. Go Ziplining With TreeTrails Adventures

In fact, you can do more than zipline with TreeTrails Adventures ! Perfect for both adults and children, the adventure courses for both adults and kids including ziplining, rope bridges and netted tunnels – all about 50 feet above ground. This is an awesome thing to do in Mystic, CT if you’re looking for a bit of a challenge while also getting out into nature.

19. Experience The Bascule Bridge

One of the things that makes Mystic, CT worth visiting is the very cool bascule bridge, which can be found right in the heart of downtown Mystic.

This bridge connects the Stonington side of the river, with the Groton side, and operates hourly from May 1 – October 31 to allow boats to pass through. As you read this, you may think it doesn’t sound all that exciting, but seeing the bridge shut down all traffic in downtown, and lift up to allow boats to pass through, is actually really cool to see in person.

If you’re looking to plan a visit to the bridge and want to see it operate, it will lift at 40 minutes past the hour all day until 6:40pm in season.

Free Things To Do In Mystic, CT

Mystic, CT has a reputation for being a more expensive destination, and while I do agree with that, those wanting to visit on a budget will still find plenty to do to make Mystic, CT worth visiting. Below is a list of all the free things to do in Mystic:

How Do I Spend A Day In Mystic, CT?

Because Mystic is pretty small, it makes for a really easy day trip. If you’re wondering how to spend the day in Mystic, CT to make your trip worth it, here’s my suggested itinerary:

• Start your day in Mystic at the Mystic Seaport Museum. Plan around 2-3 hours there.
• Head to Olde Mistick Village for lunch and to walk around. Be sure to grab a “potion” drink at Cloak & Wand!
• Head to Mystic Aquarium or opt for a wine tasting at one of the local vineyards.
• If visiting in the fall, be sure to squeeze in a trip to B.F. Clyde’s for some cider and doughnuts!
• Head to Stonington to walk around Water Street and visit the lighthouse.
• Drive to downtown Mystic to end your day. Walk around to visit the shops, see if you can catch the drawbridge rise, grab dinner, and then get an ice cream at Drawbridge Ice Cream before you leave.

Best Shopping In Mystic, CT

This town has a pretty great Main Street with lots of awesome little shops to explore. Here’s my list of the best shops in downtown that make Mystic, CT worth visiting:

• Queenie’s Gift Emporium – A great little shop with an eclectic mix of everything from bags and accessories, to home and kitchen goods.
• Barebones Aesthetics – While technically a facial spa, there is a gorgeous little storefront inside with a beautifully-curated selection of skincare, accessories and jewelry.
• Danforth – A New England metalworking brand with a location in downtown Mystic. Each piece you find in the store is handmade in Vermont, and they create things like oil lamps, jewelry pieces, picture frames, barware and so much more.
• Trove – Advertised as a men’s shop, but I personally still love coming in here because they have fun things to buy, and is an inspiring shop to peruse. You’ll find things like shaving products, barware, books, apparel and unique gifts here.
• Bank Square Books – An adorable little bookshop that also sells cards and gifts. I particularly love their “staff picks” shelf here.
• Adore – A great little shop with apparel, accessories, jewelry and home decor.

Mystic Movie Filming Locations

Mystic has become a bit famous for all the movies that have been filmed here and nearby areas. Below is a list of Mystic filming locations you can visit while here:

• The actual building used as the pizza restaurant in Mystic Pizza can be found in nearby Stonington at 70 Water Street. It looks pretty much the same as it did in the movie, but is now home to the New England Science & Sailing Foundation.
• Ford’s Lobster was also used as a filming location in Mystic Pizza , serving as Ferriera Lobster for the movie.
• Downtown Mystic and the Bascule Bridge were all featured in the movie Mystic Pizza .
• The movie Hope Springs filmed many scenes in nearby Stonington, including using Noah’s Diner as the “Nor’easter Diner” featured in the movie, and all over Water Street in downtown Stonington.

What Is Mystic CT Known For?

Originally known as of the leading ship-building yards in the U.S., Mystic, CT is now known for being the location of the famous movie Mystic Pizza , as well as being home to two of Connecticut’s top attractions: The Mystic Seaport and the Mystic Aquarium. Mystic is also home to the world’s last wooden whale ship, the Charles W. Morgan.

Mystic is also known for being an idyllic coastal New England town that makes for a perfect day trip or weekend getaway.

Best Restaurants In Mystic, CT

There are so many wonderful restaurants that make Mystic, CT worth visiting, it may seem like you have endless possibilities. To help you narrow down where to eat, here are a few suggestions (excluding Mystic Pizza and Ford’s since I’ve covered those already):

• Oyster Club – Located in a charming purple building close to downtown, you’ll find the upscale dining experience here one to remember. Creative seafood dishes and classic staples can be found on the menu.
• The Shipwright’s Daughter – Another more upscale experience (but still feels fairly casual), and you can find breakfast, brunch and dinner here. Menu features creative takes on traditional New England dishes.
• Pasta Fresca & Piadina – A casual place that’s a local favorite for their massive subs, soups and pasta dinners.
• S&P Oyster Restaurant & Bar – Outdoor seating along the river in a garden-like setting with an awesome seafood menu and cocktails.

Where To Stay In Mystic

The Whaler’s Inn : A boutique hotel in downtown Mystic that makes it easy to walk to all the shops, restaurants and Bascule Bridge. Each room is individually decorated, making it a unique experience each stay, and all rooms are equipped with a Roku to stream your favorite shows.

The old seafaring village of Mystic sits at the mouth of the river of the same name. Looking out to sea in a misty reverie, it seems to be thinking back on those days when it was captain of the shipyards. Time seems to have stood still since then, at least in this little town.

Mystic began building boats in the 1600s and continued the trade up into the first third of the 20th Century. During its Golden Years, more than 600 wooden maritime vessels were constructed here. After 1929, the business crumbled. Today, Mystic Seaport (a society dedicated to preserving Connecticut's maritime history) harbors more maritime boats, photos and artifacts than any other place on the planet.

Mystic Seaport is a reconstructed 19th Century seaside community built with history in mind and maritime in the heart. The village boasts old-time shops and dining. This is probably the only place on Earth where a nickel buys a beer. More than 1500 volunteers work at the seaport making this living museum a success.

Other points of interest in Mystic include: Mystic Aquarium, which houses nearly 6,000 marine animals in a spectacular array of exhibits, and the Denison Homestead Museum at Pequotsepos Manor (circa 1717).

With the Mystic River on tap, this village offers a number of excellent water sports, including kayaking and sailing. Several fishing charters pull out for adventures on the water. Lorna Anne Fishing Charters specializes in bluefish and bass offshore fishing. Mataura Sportfish sails offshore for tuna and shark, and inshore for bass and bluefish.

Indoor rock climbing and tennis facilities are available. In nearby Stonington, golfing is offered at the Pequot Golf Club and at both the Birch Plain Golf Course and Four Season Golf in Groton.

Other sports in the area include: camping; walking the seven miles of trails at Denison Pequotsepos Nature Center; fishing at the pier in New London's Fort Trumbull State Park; and the fine art of beachcombing at Ocean Beach Park in New London.

Mystic, a living museum, is located in southeast Connecticut on I-95.

Established in 1663 by Captain George Denison and his wife Lady Ann, the building was the family home until they died in 1712.

Another attraction located in neighboring Groton, Bluff Point State Park is an ideal place to visit for outdoor adventure. In under 15 minutes, tourists can reach this dramatic coastal reserve that hugs the Long Island Sound.

To walk on the actual bluff, visitors will have to hike the trails that wind their way through verdant woodland and open areas. The 3.6-mile loop trail is well maintained and dogs are welcome to use it, too, as long as they are leashed.

A stunning Connecticut State Park , this is a popular place to mountain bike, hike, and fish, so plan to spend at least a few hours enjoying the captivating views and crisp, fresh air.

Parking is free for Connecticut residents, but those from out of state will have to pay a fee when visiting between May 1 st and October 31 st .

Insider's tip: Bring binoculars to spy some of the area's most spectacular birds.

The Peace Nature Sanctuary lies serenely on the banks of the Mystic River, almost directly across from the Mystic Seaport Museum. As its name implies, this is the place to visit if you're looking for tranquility.

Known as the Peace Grove in the late 19 th century, this site once hosted close to 10,000 people for peaceful meetings. Today, it is operated by the Denison Pequotsepos Nature Center (DPNC) and used as a nature reserve, as well as a site to host classes on important topics like conservation and other environmental education.

May is a popular time to visit for flower lovers. This is when 400 pink lady's slippers burst into bloom. While this preserve is technically not open to the public (you're supposed to book a hike with the DPNC or attend one of their organized programs) many people park on the road and walk in.

Mystic has just a handful of hotels, mostly in the mid-range price bracket.

Luxury Hotels :

• Hilton Mystic is the only four-star hotel in town. It has a range of spacious rooms and suites with contemporary décor, including polished dark wood furnishings, work desks with chairs, and framed art on off-white walls. The hotel is just one block from I-95. Amenities include a restaurant that offers kids' meals, as well as a saltwater swimming pool, lounge with evening entertainment, and a workout room.
• Another luxe option is the Whaler's Inn . The boutique hotel has a great location right downtown and is within walking distance of restaurants and shops. The rooms and suites here occupy five different buildings and have a cozy New England maritime ambience about them. Book a room in the Hoxie House for a romantic getaway — these come with air-jet soaking tubs, Mystic River views, and fireplaces. The inn also has family-friendly suites with bunkbeds, and kids stay free here.

Mid-Range Hotels :

• Hyatt Place Mystic is a top mid-range option with allergy-free rooms with modern decor and sofa beds that work great if you're traveling with the kids. The hotel is within walking distance of the historic Mystic Seaport. Amenities include a free hot breakfast, heated outdoor swimming pool, 24-hour workout room, and business center. The Hyatt Place is also pet-friendly.
• If you're looking for a family-friendly property that is affordable check out the Hampton Inn & Suites Mystic . Less than two miles from downtown Mystic, it features spacious and contemporary rooms and suites, including interconnected room options. Rooms come with blackout curtains, desks, mini-fridges and microwaves, and coffee makers. There is a free breakfast in the morning, as well as a swimming pool and workout room. Dogs are also welcome to stay.
• The Holiday Inn Express Mystic is another option. It has nicely appointed rooms and suites, including options for families. All are clean and comfortable. Amenities include a swimming pool and fitness room, as well as meeting rooms for business travelers. The free continental breakfast includes hardboiled eggs, pastries, bread, cereal, and juices.

Budget Hotels:

• Howard Johnson by Wyndham Mystic is the best budget option in town. The hotel has spacious rooms with bright-colored accent walls and matching bed runners that make them feel less generic. They also come with refrigerators and microwaves. The hotel caters to families, and kids stay free. Amenities include an indoor heated swimming pool, fitness center, and vending machines.
• Another budget option is the Rodeway Inn . Rooms are basic but tidy at this two-star hotel. Amenities include a swimming pool, free parking and Wi-Fi, and a 24-hour front desk. It is also dog friendly.

Situated on the banks of the Mystic River—the two sides are linked by the state’s most photographed and fascinating upward swing-span bridge—it's home to must-see attractions known for entertaining families and enthralling maritime history buffs.

Some of the best things to do in Mystic, like grabbing a slice of pizza made famous by the movie "Mystic Pizza," are famous far beyond Connecticut’s borders. Tour a Legendary Lighthouse

Just a 10-minute drive from downtown Mystic, the Stonington Lighthouse Museum tells the story of its light, which operated from 1840 to 1889 before serving as housing for the many keepers who ran nearby breakwaters until 1909. Eventually, it was purchased by the Stonington Historical Society in 1925 and turned into a museum by 1927.

Learn about the maritime and agricultural history of the area, once populated by farmers, sea captains, and sailors, see artifacts left behind by its former inhabitants, and climb the 29 steps to the top of the tower to view the scenic Fisher's Island Sound and three states—New York, Rhode Island, and Connecticut—on a clear day.

Make Memories at Mystic Aquarium

Far more than a home for a vast variety of marine creatures including New England’s only captive whales, Mystic Aquarium is a research and rescue facility and a multifaceted attraction that captivates all ages. Allow a full day to experience all the aquarium has to offer, including sea lion shows in the Foxwoods Marine Theater, touch tanks, ​and a 4-D theater.

Mystic Aquarium is perhaps best known for its one-of-a-kind encounter programs, which allow visitors to meet a beluga whale or an African penguin up-close. Although the added fee of around $100.00 for a close encounter is steep, the experience is one you’ll remember for a lifetime.

Explore Mystic Seaport Museum

Mystic Seaport Museum , a 17-acre village on the banks of the Mystic River, is Connecticut’s best living history attraction. Climb aboard the Charles W. Morgan, the last wooden whaling ship in existence and the crown jewel of Mystic Seaport Museum’s collection of historic vessels. You can also see a planetarium show, marvel at extensive collections of maritime art and artifacts, or chat with coopers, shipsmiths, and other village artisans. After several hours exploring the venue, sustenance isn't far away as several lunch options are right on site.

Observe Mystic’s Bascule Bridge in Action

The bascule bridge spanning the Mystic River has been in operation since 1922. “Bascule” is French for “seesaw,” and this unique style of drawbridge was patented in 1918 by Thomas E. Brown, who also designed the Eiffel Tower’s elevator.

Much like a seesaw, the bridge is opened by the mechanical lowering of immense counterbalancing weights. When the bridge opens to allow tall boats to pass through, traffic backs up on Route 1. One of the best vantage points for watching Mystic’s bascule bridge in operation is the dock behind the Steamboat Inn .

Sail Aboard the Schooner Argia

Savor a Slice of Heaven at Mystic Pizza

The movie that launched Julia Roberts’ career also put a little pizza spot in Mystic, Connecticut, on the map. Fun fact: "Mystic Pizza" wasn’t actually filmed at the restaurant—a replica was built inside a nearby warehouse—but three decades later, Mystic visitors still love stopping into Mystic Pizza for “a slice of heaven” and the chance to see movie memorabilia. Try the garlicky Seafood Delight pie topped with shrimp, clams, and scallops.

Hunt for Rare Vinyl at Mystic Disc

You thought record stores were as extinct as dinosaurs? Not in Mystic, where Mystic Disc has survived for more than 33 years thanks to owner Dan Curland’s vast music knowledge and devoted customers. Rock, jazz, country, folk, and reggae are all represented and if you’re a vinyl collector, you’ll want to spend hours flipping through the bins in the cramped shop. Even if you haven’t owned a turntable in years, the nostalgia factor alone is worth the visit. Customers can also listen to anything before they buy. 

Shop and Dine at Olde Mistick Village

Remember the days before mega-malls and Amazon? If so, you’ll love poking around the cute shops at Olde Mistick Village . Sporting the look and feel of an early 1700s New England village, the retail complex appeals to gift seekers with shops like Irish Eyes, Sofia’s Mystical Christmas, and Raining Cats and Dogs. Outdoor activities, books, tea… whatever excites you is likely to have a shop catering to that specific interest. There’s even an old-fashioned kite shop. When you work up an appetite, treat yourself to homemade ice cream or a meal at restaurants like Steak Loft or Go Fish .

Take a Stroll Around Downtown Mystic

This historic but lively coastal neighborhood stretches along both banks of the Mystic River. Downtown Mystic is home to more than 80 independently owned shops, restaurants, bistros, ice cream parlors, and souvenir stores. Downtown is also the setting for special events like the Mystic Outdoor Art Festival and the St. Patrick's Day Mystic Irish Parade.

Just 3 hours from New York City, the charming coastal town of Mystic, CT is one of Connecticut’s best destinations. Whether you like historic boats, marine life, local shopping, or seafood, Mystic is absolutely worth visiting! I’ve been traveling around New England for more than 20 years, and I’ve visited Mystic many times. It’s one of my favorite small towns in New England, and I discover something new on every single visit. I’ve put those things together into this travel guide of the best things to do in Mystic, Connecticut, including the Mystic Seaport Museum, the aquarium, and downtown Mystic. Let’s go!

Top Things to Do in Mystic CT

With its coastal location, Mystic is one of the best places to experience a New England summer. While you can absolutely visit the area in other seasons of the year, Mystic is largely a summer destination. Most of the activities I’ve suggested below for your Mystic itinerary are summer-focused. However, I also mention a few things to do in the fall in Mystic, plus some winter and even spring ideas. It’s a great place year-round! Still, June through September are probably the ideal time of year to take advantage of all that Mystic has to offer. Without further ado, here are the Mystic Connecticut attractions, shops, and sites worth visiting!

1. Visit the Mystic Seaport Museum & Village

If you have ever wondered how America’s maritime past has shaped the lives of craftsmen today, you won’t want to miss Mystic Seaport .

Covering 19 acres along the Mystic River, the museum is touted as the largest maritime museum in the US, and one of the leaders in the arena. It features four National Historic Landmark vessels, including America’s oldest commercial ship and the last wooden whaleship in the world ( the Charles W. Morgan ) a working shipyard, and world-class exhibits. In addition to all of this, Mystic Seaport also contains a recreated 19th-century maritime village.

This true seafaring village is comprised of dozens of original New England buildings from the 1800s that have been transported to the museum.

As you wander the village, you can encounter a variety of nautical specialists, including shipsmiths, coopers, riggers, and woodcarvers, who all bring the town’s seafaring past to life.

Can you walk around Mystic Seaport for free?

Unfortunately, the Seaport is not free to explore, and tickets are required for admission for adults and kids over the age of 4.

2. Watch the Mystic River Bascule Bridge Raise

You might be surprised to hear that Mystic, Connecticut is not a town. In fact, it is a village that is split between the towns of Groton and Stonington. This bridge is what separates the two sides!

Built in 1922, the iconic Mystic River Bascule Bridge opens every hour at 40 minutes past the hour between 8:40 am and 6:40 pm to allow tall vessels to pass through.

A bascule bridge is raised and lowered using a system of counterweights, and the mechanisms of the Mystic River Bridge are fully exposed, so you can see all the moving parts hard at work.

It’s fun to join the crowds of onlookers who gather along the riverside to watch the bridge rise. Kids will love the short horn blast that sounds to announce that the bridge is going up!

Pro tip for Visiting Mystic: Keep the bridge schedule in mind when exploring downtown, as the process takes several minutes to complete. Don’t get stuck on one side of the bridge when you need to be on the other!

3 . Fuel Up at Mystic Depot Roasters

If you’re planning a full Mystic, Connecticut itinerary, you’re going to need to know where to go to fuel up—especially in the mornings!

Mystic Depot Roasters is one of those coffee shops that gets it all right: you’ve got a solid selection of food at good prices, a comfortable and interesting atmosphere both inside and out, and of course, spectacular fresh roast coffee! It’s not fancy, but it is delicious! My scrambled eggs with herbs were *chef’s kiss*.

Mystic Depot Roasters is located at the historic Mystic Train Station, and you’ll see that it has embraced this in an absolutely lovely way.

PS: Just looking for coffee? You can also grab some caffeine at some of Mystic’s other top coffeeshops, including Lamplighter Trading Company and Sift, or even get coffee at Mystic Drawbridge Ice Cream (I had a fantastic iced vanilla latte there that really hit the spot on an early afternoon).

4. Stroll along Main Street

One of Mystic’s main attractions, guests love to explore the picturesque riverfront downtown area of Mystic which is centered around the Bridge.

Wander through a variety of unique boutiques, galleries, jewelry shops, toy stores, shops, and restaurants in this very walkable downtown area. For nautical inspired garb to commemorate your seafaring adventure, check out Mystic Knotwork which is the first and oldest knot shop in the US. Other downtown Mystic shops worth visiting:

• The Black Dog: an iconic New England clothing shop with its signature black lab adorning all items
• Trove : a hip and very manly shop for men
• Hang the Moon : an eclectic gift shop selling “exceptional gifts for women made by exceptional women”
• Bank Square Books : an independent bookstore since 1988

5. Shop at Olde Mistick Village

Without a doubt, there’s some really great (and unique) shopping in Mystic, Connecticut. How about shopping in a recreated 18th-century New England Village? Olde Mistick Village offers that very thing, mirroring the shopping experience one would have had in the time before malls and online shopping. In the village, browse more than 60 small and unique shops as you stroll along cobblestone streets.

From a store dedicated to unique olive oil blends, a mystical Christmas store, Connecticut’s largest retail chocolate manufacturer, and so many more, visitors can spend hours wandering the variety of stores clustered throughout the village.

On a recent visit to Mystic, I discovered 3 fantastic shops that you absolutely have to check out on your next trip to Mystic! I am not certain, but given the incredible attention to detail and creativity in these shops, I believe they are all owned by the same person or persons.

Alice’s Little Haunted Bookshop

This is a spooky little bookshop inspired by the 18th century Victorian library of Lewis Carroll, author of Alice in Wonderland .

Lovers of horror, fantasy, and everything in between will find what they’re looking for on these shelves. And perhaps what they didn’t know they were looking for…

Alice in the Village

Directly next door to the Victorian bookshop with all its gothic vibes is Alice in the Village , a pink explosion of flowers, colors, and tea!

Oh, the tea! This shop serves all kinds of teas, many of which are whimsical and even beautiful! Bubble teas, matcha, hot and iced tea, and special Wonderland drinks can all be ordered.

Cloak and Wand

If you’ve ever waited patiently for your Hogwarts acceptance letter, this is the store for you! You’ll find it on the other side of Olde Mistick Village, but you definitely can’t miss it—there’s a dragon out front!

Cloak and Wand is not just filled with goods you’ll want to buy, but there’s a Potion Bar in-store, so you can create a custom soda or hot chocolate “potion” using more than 64 different flavors.

6. Set Sail with Argia Ship Cruises

To really feel a part of Mystic’s seafaring ways, take a sunset or day sail on the 81’ classic wooden Two-Masted Gaff Topsail Schooner, Argia , and explore the scenic coastline and surrounding islands. This is definitely one of the best things to do in Mystic, Connecticut! 

The schooner can accommodate up to 49 guests who can spend their time relaxing and taking in the scenery or getting their sea legs by helping the crew hoist and trim the sails. 

7. Den ison Pequotsepos Nature Center

Those looking to get closer to nature in Mystic Connecticut can’t miss Denison Pequotsepos Nature Center , a 350-acre sanctuary with over 10 miles of hiking trails.

With a mission to inspire an understanding of the natural world and how individuals are a part of it, visitors can spend their day birding, identifying wild plants, and enjoying the various wetlands, woodlands, and meadow habitats.

The sanctuary features a rehabilitation center where caretakers work with birds and other animals to get them healthy enough to be released back into the wild. For those who can’t be, you can find them in outdoor flight enclosures throughout the sanctuary.

The Center also features a Nature Center, a working farm, a Nature Preschool & drop-in homeschooling classes, gardening classes and other various special events. 

8. Elevate your Taste Buds at S&P Oyster

One of the most popular restaurants in Mystic , S&P Oyster offers fresh caught seafood in a comfortable yet upscale atmosphere. Beautifully positioned right along the water, a seat on the patio offers views of the Mystic River Bascule Bridge. You can watch the bridge raise as you enjoy spectacularly prepared seafood!

Be sure to make a reservation, this is a very popular place to eat in Mystic.

9. Wander Through the Mystic Museum of Art

Looking for some art and culture in Mystic? Visit Mystic Museum of Art ! You’ll find rotating exhibitions and galleries that focus on bringing art into the community that can provide a window into another world.

10. Take a sailing charter to Fisher’s Island

Fisher’s Island is a 7-mile long island that protects the sound from the open ocean’s often unpredictable wind and waves. This location has solidified the island as one of the East Coast’s most popular sailing destinations.

For guests without their own sailboats, Poet’s Lounge Sailing Charters offers visitors an ultimate private day on the water, completely catered to their interests. Guests can relax and take in the scenery, stop for a swim, go snorkeling or embark on an ocean sail during their adventure.

Aboard a 40-ft racing boat, Captain Darin Keech sails up to 6 guests through Fisher’s Island Sound for 2 – 6 hour trips. Guests can bring their own food and beverages and may be lucky enough to hear the Captain play his guitar.

11. Grab a Pint at Bank & Bridge Brewing

Located in an old bank building, Bank & Bridge Brewing is one of the newest brewpubs in the area!

Downtown is the place to be for many reasons, but this Mystic brewery has made quite the splash with its culinary forward kitchen and its inventive craft beer selection.

12. Explore Denison Homestead Museum

The Denison Homestead is a privately owned 160-acre property that is home to 1717 House Museum, the Denison Pequotsepos Nature Center and a farmers’ market. Open Friday – Monday from June – October, visitors step back in time to explore a 300-year-old preserved family manor.

In 1930, after 6 generations of Denisons called the manor home, it was turned into a memorial honoring the Denison family. Each of the 5 rooms was restored to echo different time periods and the family members that lived in them.

Today, guests can visit the museum, enjoy hiking over 8 miles of trails across the property and pick up locally grown and manufactured goods while listening to live music at their Farmer’s Market every Sunday. 

13. Meet the Residents of Mystic Aquarium

Animal lovers don’t want to miss the Mystic Aquarium . The stars of the show are the beluga whales that can be viewed from Mystic Aquarium’s Arctic Coast, a 750,000-gallon outdoor beluga whale habitat. The Aquarium is a leader in beluga research, care and behaviors.

Visitors can also learn the difference between seals and sea lions, watch the African penguins, see the handlers feed the sharks and rays, and even experience of one of the many interactive exhibits.

Don’t forget to catch the 4D Deep Sea movie presentation which rotates sea and arctic-inspired films. The Mystic Aquarium is certainly fun for kids of all ages, but adults will be surprised at how much they love it, too.

14. Run the Mystic Half Marathon

Running a race may not be the most typical way to explore a city, but the Mystic Half Marathon is truly unique.

Wind your way through 13.1 miles along one of New England’s most scenic shorelines, past historic ships, and through lovely downtown Mystic with a finish line in front of the Mystic Aquarium.

At the very least, it is a guarantee you’ll burn enough calories to counteract all the delicious food you’ll eat later! 

15. Enjoy a Sweet Treat from Mystic Drawbridge Ice Cream 

Did you know that ice cream has been hand scooped from this site since the 1800s? It’s true! Mystic Drawbridge Ice Cream uses only the finest ingredients to continue what they call the “Tradition of Ice Cream Excellence” that has lived on to this day. And my husband, son, and I can all confirm that their ice cream is extremely delicious!

You’ll find dreamy ice cream flavors on the menu like the Vermont Maple Nut, Wild Maine Blueberry, Mystic Mud, and even vegan options like Grandma’s Oatmeal Cookie. If you’re visiting Mystic in summer time, add this to your list of places to go!

16. Experience the Blue Monday Summer Concert Series

Blue Monday is a free summer concert series in July that offers a great way to enjoy a summer night out at Mystic River Park. Oh, and did we mention it’s free? Live music in Mystic sounds like a perfect way to spend a summer evening.

17. Splash Around at Williams Beach Park

The only public beach in Mystic, Williams Beach Park is located at the local YMCA. While this little beach park may not be mighty, it works if you’re looking for a place to take a quick dip in the Long Island Sound! There’s also a nice little playground for the kiddos.

Craving a bigger beach? Some of the closest beaches to Mystic CT include Misquamicut State Beach, just over the line in Westerly , Rhode Island, and Bluff Point State Park in Groton.

1 8. B.F. Clyde’s Cider Mill

If you’re in search of things to do in Mystic in the fall, you’ll want to add this to the itinerary! B.F. Clyde’s Cider Mill is the oldest steam powered cider mill in the US, and it is a National Historic Landmark that produces some of the tastiest apple cider around! In fact, you can even get hard cider from B.F. Clyde’s Cider Mill, so be sure to get some tasty souvenirs to take home a taste of Mystic.  

19. Listen to the Eastern Connecticut Symphony Orchestra

Founded in 1946, the mission of the Eastern Connecticut Symphony Orchestra is to inspire, educate, and connect their community through live orchestral music.

They do this each year through a series of six subscription concerts with noteworthy solo features, free lectures and performances with the Eastern Connecticut Ballet in presentations of The Nutcracker .

20. Taste Wines at Saltwater Farm Vineyard

Saltwater Farm Vineyard is on the Connecticut Wine Trail, one of the fastest-growing wine regions in the United States. The area boasts a variety of wine styles that you can sample alongside a stunning backdrop located just outside of Mystic. This could be a fun idea for a romantic couples trip in Mystic!

The winery offers a Passport to Connecticut Winery Farms where participants can collect stamps from all the Connecticut based wineries they visit. Collect enough stamps and you are entered to win the grand prize and other prize packages.

21. Go on a Sabino Steamboat tour

Take a ride on the oldest wooden, coal-fired steamboat in regular operation in the US as it glides along the Mystic River in 30-minute, 90-minute, and 2-hour cruises.

Operating for over 110 years, Sabino is a 57’ steamboat that came to Mystic in 1973 from Maine and was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1992. Tours leave from the Mystic Shipyard.

22. Enjoy a Taste of Mystic

Every June, the Taste of Mystic sets up shop in Olde Mistick Village, and festival goers can sample popular local restaurants all in one spot! Of course, there’s live music and other activities as well, but if you’re looking for a great way to get a little taste of the area, this is it!

23. Take a Seaside Shadows Ghost Tour

Speaking of fall things to do in Mystic, this downtown Mystic ghost tour is a highly rated foray into some of the more supernatural history of the area. Operated by Seaside Shadows Haunted History Tours, you’ll have a chance to learn about local legends, lore, and some of the possibly paranormal activity that surrounds this historic seaport town!

24. Stay at the Inn at Mystic

There are several lovely hotels in Mystic to choose from, including some sweet bed and breakfasts that are among the dreamiest in the state , but the Inn at Mystic checks a whole lot of boxes!

It’s right on the water and in the heart of historic Mystic, easily walkable to all kinds of Mystic things to see and do, and the rooms are exceptionally cozy, and generously appointed.

The hotel features some fantastic amenities, like a seasonal outdoor pool, an onsite restaurant, walking trails, and fantastic views.

If you’re planning a trip to Mystic at Christmas time, you’re in for a treat. This lovely seaside town becomes one of those Hallmark Christmas movie type of towns , and has one of the best holiday celebrations in all of New England .

You’ll find a Holiday Lighted Boat Parade, a Festival of Lights, and Santa arrives by tugboat, for crying out loud!

Not in Mystic during Christmas? You can still experience the holiday spirit by dropping by this adorable Christmas shop in Olde Mistick Village.

28. Find Serenity at Peace Nature Sanctuary

Once used as a gathering place for over 10,000 people to attend annual outdoor peace meetings, today’s Peace Nature Sanctuary offers visitors a different kind of peaceful experience.

Located along River Road the sanctuary features 45-acres of river views, well-maintained walking paths and a host of native plants to uncover at this lovely Mystic place.

Each May more than 400 pink lady slippers bloom simultaneously creating quite a sight for visitors. The Sanctuary is now maintained by the Denison Pequotsepos Nature Center.

2 9. Grab a Bite at Sift Bake Shop

Sift Bake Shop is a French focused family bakery in Mystic with a bit of a spin: downstairs is a delicious bakery full of sweet treats, upstairs is Mix , their rooftop restaurant and bar!

During the day, the restaurant isn’t open, but bakery customers are welcome to enjoy their goodies from the rooftop space.

Sift has gotten super popular in the last couple of years; you might be able to see a lunchtime line forming at their door in this photo above.

But it is tremendously delicious and worth the wait.

30. Get Down at Mystic River Jam Festival

Mystic River Jam Festival is an annual three day music festival that takes place each year in the Mystic Shipyard, and if you’re planning a June vacation, you should definitely try to time it to coincide with this event!

You’ll find a wide variety of musical genres on stage and plenty of tasty food and drinks for purchase, with the proceeds from the festival going to charity.

31. Take a Day Trip from Mystic

There are tons of things to do near Mystic, CT as well as within its limits!

One awesome thing about Connecticut is that it is incredibly compact, which means you can explore lots of its towns on one trip. There are some fantastic spots all over Connecticut to visit , but a few that are closest to Mystic and would make excellent day trips include:

15 Things to Do in Mystic, Connecticut (+ Filming Sites!)

If you’ve never seen Mystic Pizza , you’re missing out. It’s got romance, humor, heartbreak, and Julia Roberts. Once I introduced Brian to this gem, I knew that we had to visit Mystic, Connecticut, during our time in the state on our New England road trip .

That means I’ll be sharing some filming spots from the movie with you in this guide to things to do in Mystic, Connecticut, on top of all kinds of other fun bits about this New England seaport village.

Mystic Pizza in Mystic, Connecticut

You now know my love for the classic Mystic Pizza , so the first few stops will link back to the movie because I love a good filming location tour . If you’re not all that into it, I’m sorry. At the very least, pop by the pizza shop that inspired the flick when it’s time for you to refuel.

GIMME THAT MAP OF MYSTIC, CONNECTICUT!

Is there really a Mystic Pizza? The pizza shop you can eat at while in Mystic inspired the movie Mystic Pizza .

The movie wasn’t filmed at the restaurant — it was just too small — but Amy Jones, the screenwriter of the movie, loved it so much she used the setting for her next script.

There’s all kinds of memorabilia there from the movie. They are playing up their connection in a big day.

Fun fact: There’s a second location in nearby Stonington. The owners opened it when demand grew after the movie came out in 1988.

The pizza was decent. Keep in mind that we had just spent a week or so eating our way through the best New Haven pizza , so we were a tougher crowd. There are all kinds of restaurants to eat your way through otherwise if you’re not in the mood for pizza, but has that ever really happened to you?

Yes, I got a T-shirt.

Mystic River Bascule Bridge

In the movie, Charlie drives Daisy over this bridge on their first date. It’s also where Jojo gets very upset — and rightfully so — at her boyfriend/fiancé Bill for naming his boat “Nympho” in honor of her healthy sex drive.

I didn’t say the movie was perfect, and Bill was a little upset at having been left at the alter. We manage grief in different ways.

If that doesn’t impress you, the bridge still should. We were able to see it raised to allow ships to pass underneath, effectively grinding any vehicle traffic along Main Street.

It’s also easily accessible, linking up historic downtown Mystic with the village of Stonington on the other side. If it’s a warm day, pop by the Mystic Drawbridge Ice Cream shop once you’re done watching this marvel of engineering.

Ford’s Lobster

This seasonal seafood shack in Noanck, Connecticut, stands in for the lobster processing plant where Kat and Daisy’s mother worked. It was known as Ferriera Lobsters in the movie.

Sadly, Ford’s Lobster was closed when we visited in the fall , which is unfortunate. I was on quite the lobster kick, particularly a lobster roll kick, at the time. If you’re interested in a taste test of your own, visit in the spring and summer months. They’re usually open by mid-March.

The Real Mystic Pizza

The pizza shop scenes from the movie were actually filmed at a larger location in nearby Stonington. You won’t see much but a building there now, but I’ll still include it here for the super fans among you. The interior was essentially a replica of the shop in Mystic, with more room for the crew to film and eat catered snacks, something I imagine they do.

Head to 70 Water St. in Stonington to see where the interior pizza shop shots were filmed.

Fun fact: It’s the New England Science & Sailing Foundation today, which actually has a pretty cool mission. They develop STEM-based curriculum for kids that includes marine science and all aspects of sailing.

The Windsor Family Home

I’m not endorsing any trespassing on private property, but if you want to get an idea of the wealth of the Windsors, head to the intersection of Church and Orchard streets in Stonington.

You should be able to tell right away which house was used for the filming of that dinner scene that made Matt Damon famous: “Mom, do you want my green stuff?”

Well, maybe that’s not what made Matt Damon famous…but it’s very fun to see the baby-faced actor with so little to do. Ben was nowhere to be found.

Again, the home is private property today. Admire from afar and start plotting how you’re going to get your hands on some new money to live amongst these people.

If you want to spend more time in Stonington, hit up the Saltwater Farm Vineyard , a popular stop on the Connecticut Wine Trail. They don’t offer tastings at this time, but you can order yourself wine by the glass.

The Arujo & Barboza Family Homes

You’ll need to drive a little further out for this one, but Pawcatuck, CT, is almost as cute as Mystic if you have more time to explore.

Head to Mechanic Street to see the two homes used as filming locations for the girls’ family homes. You’ll spot them at 185-187, but don’t be too big of a creep. These are private residences.

Note: Kat, Daisy and her mom lived at 187. Jojo and her parents lived at 185. If you’ve seen the movie, you know that Jojo gets quite caught up with Bill at that house at one point before her parents walk in. It’s very spicy.

More Things to Do in Mystic, Connecticut

Even if you’ve never seen Mystic Pizza , these are all kinds of Mystic things to do that have nothing to do with Julia Roberts. She is a treasure, but I get it. You might be too busy for the early catalog.

Is Mystic, CT, worth visiting? Mystic is worth visiting for its fresh seafood, waterfront setting , and a dose of seaside New England charm . That charm is quite evident when you take a deeper dive into Mystic’s maritime history.

Mystic Seaport Museum

The Mystic Seaport Museum is the largest maritime museum in the United States. It features historic ships and a recreated 19th-century fishing village.

One of the vessels on display is the last surviving wooden whaling ship in the world. The Charles W. Morgan is also the oldest commercial ship still floating in the United States, and I admit I’m happy that it isn’t out there doing its whaling thing.

Can you walk around Mystic Seaport for free? It’s free to walk around the harbor where the Mystic Seaport Museum is located, but you will need to pay an admission to walk inside the actual open air museum.

It was closed during our visit, but we were still able to see some of the ships docked. I’d love to head back to check it out, as docked ships is exactly how I like to experience them.

Historic Downtown Mystic

Mystic was made for walking. I highlight some establishments we loved while strolling downtown Mystic — Mystic Pizza, the brewery below — but it’s also fun to tackle the area in a choose-your-own-adventure kind of way.

Pop into the boutiques that intrigue you, or explore the numerous kayak and watercraft rental shops if the weather’s nice. We’d love to return for a fancy meal at S&P Oyster , one of the most attractive eateries we saw while exploring.

Bank & Bridge Brewing

We hit up Bank & Bridge Brewing in historic downtown Mystic after housing quite a bit of pizza at Mystic Pizza next door. I loved the ambiance of this place.

The bank bit in the name isn’t just for fun. The building actually used to be a bank, and you’ll see remnants of that fact in the vault room they’ve turned into storage.

The beer was great, too. They serve a handful of their own on top of guest taps and wines if that’s what you’re after. If you’re hungry, peruse the sandwiches and appetizers on the menu.

Mystic River Park

Watch the drawbridge go up from a different vantage point or just take a stroll and check out the big boats in Mystic River Park.

Access the park by crossing the bridge toward Stonington. You’ll be a nice stroll away if you want to just walk from the Mystic Seaport Museum. In the summer, live concerts entertain visitors in the park, but we had a great time just walking around and taking in the views.

Olde Mistick Village

Enjoy your shopping and your eating in an old timey setting at the Olde Mistick Village . The outdoor mall has been here since 1973, and the design is very intentional. No two buildings are exactly the same, and the vision was always a colonial-style place that would bring in revenue for the city.

It’s a great place to get souvenirs to bring back with you and support small businesses in the process. Choose from over 40 unique establishments, or catch a movie. There’s a luxury theater here, too.

Note: The open-air village also hosts a variety of events throughout the year, so if you don’t like crowds, check the website before you head out.

Mystic Aquarium

If you’re traveling to Mystic with kids, the entire family will love a visit to the interactive Mystic Aquarium . It’s the only place in the country to see beefy Stellar sea lions, and one of only three facilities that care for northern fur seals.

Beluga whales are another large part of the aquarium’s mission. Researchers here have been working to figure out why their numbers keep declining in the cold regions they’ve always called home: the Cook Inlet and the Estuary of St. Lawrence. Their Arctic Coast exhibit is the largest outdoor beluga whale habitat in the United States.

If you’re visiting on a special occasion, they also have a variety of animal encounters available, including meeting their adorable African penguins in a small, private setting. It’s pricey, but sounds quite bucket-listy.

Denison Pequotsepos Nature Center

There are multiple sites that fall under the umbrella of the Denison Pequotsepos Nature Center . The facility on Pequotsepos Road is a sanctuary and wildlife rehabilitation center. See a variety of owls and other birds of prey that are native to this part of New England. Meet frogs, fish, turtles, and snakes.

There are a variety of nature trails that start from the nature center, including their Meditation Walking Path for quiet reflection. Several of those trails will connect you to another section of the park at Coogan Farm.

Coogan Farm is 45 acres of undeveloped farmland that was saved by the center following a two-year campaign to do so. Today the site includes historic structures from the 17th century, a community garden, and a variety of walking and biking trails.

Denison Homestead

The nature center described above is found on land known as the Denison Homestead . The homestead deserves its own mention here as it’s so much more than the nature center. It’s a museum — the building has been undergoing quite a bit of restoration lately, so check the website if you’re interested in that — and an educational facility.

It’s home to Mystic’s best farmers market. It’s a site of historical importance to six generations of locals, the Denisons, who called this place home.

The homestead is a great place to learn about a different side of Mystic, away from the maritime roots it’s so well-known for.

Haley Farm State Park

This park is in Groton, Connecticut, but it’s less than a 10-minute drive from Mystic proper. That makes it popular for folks seeking attractions near Mystic, CT, to round out their day.

The open space park is a great pace for joggers, bikers, and the adventurous sort who like unique rock formations. Canopy Rock pictured above was once known as Jemima’s Rock after a local biblical scholar who used this site for Sunday sermons in the 1700s. It has since been split in two by frost.

If you want to stretch your legs, tackle the Haley Farm Loop. The wander through the woods is 2.7 miles roundtrip with varied terrain but little elevation gain.

Where to Stay: Mystic, Connecticut, Hotels

We went on a day trip to Mystic, CT, from New Haven. It took us about an hour, so it felt reasonable for the day. That said, there’s lots more I would have done in Mystic with more time.

Your Flight:  I use a variety of tools to find cheap airfare around the United States, but if you’re looking to book during a particular period of time, especially during busy times (e.g. leaf-peeping season in New England), you should search on  Skyscanner .

It’s great for searching when you’re more flexible, too, as it allows you to compare travel based on length of travel, departure date, etc.

We visited the village on a Mystic, CT, day trip from New Haven. Flights to New Haven proper are pricey and will likely involve connections. Seek out deals to any of the New York City airports or New Jersey’s Newark Liberty International Airport, instead. You can visit on a longer day trip from Boston , too, if you find a good deal there.

You’ll be in New Haven and all of its most impressive places within a couple hours and potentially save quite a bit of cash for pizza and Mystic souvenirs.
