The resort is named for the central white beach - Playa Blanca - in a 9-km wide bay on the south coast of Lanzarote. Playa Flamingo is the western beach within the bay and Playa Dorada the eastern. These are mostly sandy, and sheltered by volcanic hills from the Atlantic wind and waves, so they're good for swimming and sunbathing. They're backed by restaurants, retail and hotels (mostly low rise) and there's a ferry port and a leisure marina. What's called "Papagayo Beach" is a series of sandy coves 3 km southeast of town.
Highway LZ-2 runs from Arrecife and the airport to Playa Blanca, about 40 km.
Bus 60 / 62 runs from Arrecife via Intercambiador, Playa Honda, Tías, Uga and Yaiza to Playa Blanca ferry pier, every 30 min M-F and hourly Saturday and Sunday.
Bus 161 runs from Arrecife Airport ( ACE IATA ) T1 and T2 via Puerto del Carmen and Yaiza to the ferry pier. It costs €3.30 (Jan 2023) and runs M-F every 30 min, Saturday hourly and Sunday every 2 hours. On Sunday it might be quicker to take Bus 23 towards Arrecife and change at the Intercambiador west edge of the city for Bus 60 / 62.
28.8645 -13.8314 1 Estacion de Guaguas the bus station is a roof covered drop-off and bus parking lot with squalid toilets. Buses towards Puerto del Carmen, the airport and Arrecife stop across the road, on the northbound carriageway of Av de las Canarias.
28.8589 -13.8338 2 Playa Blanca Port is the landing point for Fred Olsen car ferries from Corralejo on Fuerteventura . These sail hourly and take 30 min, for a fare in 2023 of €32 per adult foot passenger, €45 per car plus driver.
Lineas Romero ferries compete on this route, sailing five times a day for €20 per adult, foot passengers only.
The central area is compact and walkable but the town sprawls 8 km east-west.
Playa Blanca has an e-scooter sharing system. You can take one anywhere and leave it anywhere in the designated area. The service is provided by Superpedestrian Link Scooters and can be used with their app. In 2023 it costs €1 to unlock then €0.30 per minute.
Bus 30 traverses town every 30 min, from Montaña Roja in the west via the ferry pier and Estación de Guaguas to Sandos Papagayo in the east. The fare in 2023 is €1.40, pay the driver in cash, they give change up to €10.
Taxis are readily available, but "Taxi" at the foot of Av de Papagayo is just a coffee shop.
As of Nov 2023, Playa Blanca and its approach highways have 4G from Vodafone, and 5G from Masmovil, Movistar and Orange.

There are so many great things to do in Playa Blanca, in Lanzarote, that I’m going back again in 2024! If you’re wondering what to do in Playa Blanca, I’ve narrowed down some of the best activities to make your holiday the best it can be…
Welcome to the enchanting coastal haven of Playa Blanca, nestled on the sun-kissed shores of Lanzarote. With its azure waters, pristine beaches, and laid-back vibe, this charming town is a paradise for travellers seeking a perfect blend of relaxation and adventure. From exploring volcanic landscapes to savouring mouthwatering local cuisine, there’s no shortage of delightful activities to enjoy here.
In this guide, I’ll take you on a journey through the best things to do in Playa Blanca town, uncovering hidden gems, insider tips, and unforgettable experiences that will make your visit truly exceptional. Whether you’re a sun worshipper, an explorer, or a food enthusiast, Playa Blanca has something special in store for you. So, let’s dive in and discover the magic of this coastal gem.
Translating literally to ‘White Beach’, Playa Blanca is a picture-postcard beach town on the southern coast of Lanzarote. Although it’s one of the more popular tourist spots in the Canary Islands, Playa Blanca is known for its slower pace of life compared to clubbing hotspots like Playa Carmen.
Wondering what to do in Playa Blanca town? Well, it’s a calm resort town, with plenty to see and do beyond simply sunbathe, rotate, repeat (although tempting). From watersports to shopping, and beach hopping to hiking, Playa Blanca has something for all ages and all types of travellers.
Playa Blanca is also a great base for exploring Lanzarote, with plenty of hotel options (including Lanzarote adults only hotels ) and day trips (see below) to be had. Discover your bucket list of things to do while in Playa Blanca here, as well as the best shops, trips and beaches.
Playa Blanca started as a small fishing village, serving as a port that connected Lanzarote with Fuerteventura. While it has seen significant development over the last few decades, transforming into a popular tourist destination, you’ll still find low-rise, whitewashed buildings and historic landmarks. It really is a blend of old and new, with dazzling, luxury yachts, a modern marina and international hotels and restaurants, mixed together with a fortress, volcanic craters and the old town.
Situated on the southernmost tip of Lanzarote, Playa Blanca is at the easternmost of Spain’s Canary Islands, located off the coast of West Africa. The town extends around a natural bay, flanked by rugged mountains on one side and the Atlantic Ocean on the other, creating a natural shelter that keeps things warm and sunny almost year-round.
In December, the average temperature is 22°C, which is somewhat of a drastic change from 7°C here in the UK!
Another envious detail; Playa Blanca is characterised by so many stunning beaches. Nearby are the Papagayo beaches, which are secluded coves set against cliffs. They’re the kind of beaches you’d find on the front cover of travel brochures or computer desktop backgrounds. The town of Playa Blanca itself stretches around a natural bay, with a gently sloping landscape that offers breathtaking views of the sea, the neighbouring island of Fuerteventura, and the Isla de Lobos.
Here are some things you can do in Playa Blanca …
Ok I thought I’d get the obvious choice out there first. You can’t not spend a day (or week) at the beaches in Playa Blanca. They’re the perfect combination of (black) and golden sands, clear waters and stunning backdrops. Popular beaches close to Playa Blanca include Playa Dorada, Playa Flamingo, and Playa Blanca town itself.
The town is known for its pristine beaches, and there are several to choose from. Here are some of the top beaches in Playa Blanca:
Among the best and most popular beaches of Playa Blanca, is Playa Dorada. This is translated as ‘golden beach’ due to its extensive golden sandy stretch, which makes it perfect for soaking up the sun or beach sports.
The waters here are calm and shallow, offering an ideal environment for both confident swimmers and those just looking for a leisurely paddle. It’s a beach that truly ticks all the boxes for a day of sun, sea, and sand.
Playa Flamingo is a stunning Playa Blanca beach with soft, golden sand and crystal-clear waters. But the beach isn’t just about natural beauty – you’re also well-catered for with a variety of amenities nearby.
Fancy a beach-side lunch or a refreshing cocktail?
You’ll find plenty of restaurants and bars just a short stroll away. Also useful if you have kids who get hungry or need somewhere to shelter from the sun every now and then.
A bit off the beaten path, the Papagayo Beaches are a series of secluded, unspoiled beaches that offer a more tranquil experience. Each beach is a small cove surrounded by natural beauty, making them ideal for those seeking a bit of peace and quiet. The waters here are as clear as you can imagine, providing a fantastic spot for snorkelling or simply enjoying the stunning undersea view.
These beaches are located just outside of Playa Blanca and are some of the most beautiful on the island. You can hike or bike to the beaches or take a water taxi from the Marina Rubicón. They’re located in Los Ajaches Natural Park, so you’ll get to see lots of natural beauty.
Speaking of natural beauty, you may spot some nudists too if you go to Caleta del Congrio, one of the Papagayo beaches.
A beach so stunning the town shares the same name; Playa Blanca is a small, sheltered cove providing a cosy and calm beach experience. With its gentle waters, it’s particularly family-friendly and great for families with young children looking to enjoy a safe day at the seaside. It’s the heart of the town and a place that carries the local vibe in every grain of sand.
Playa del Afre is a less frequented but equally spectacular beach in Playa Blanca. The beach offers impressive views of the coastline and the nearby island of Fuerteventura, providing a beautiful backdrop for a day at the beach. While it may not be as bustling as some of the other Playa Blanca beaches, its tranquillity and natural beauty make it well worth a visit. It’s the perfect spot for those seeking a bit of solitude and a connection with nature.
Marina Rubicón is home to many shops, restaurants, and cafes. You can take a stroll along the boardwalk, browse the shops, or enjoy a meal with a sea view. If you enjoy looking at all the fancy yachts too, this is the place you want to be.
Definitely one of the best things to do in Playa Blanca Lanzarote!
Speaking of yachts and boats, one of the best things to do in Playa Blanca is go on a boat trip. There’s lots of different boat trips from Marina Rubicón , including trips to the nearby island of Fuerteventura, dolphin and whale watching trips, and sunset cruises. They’re well worth it and pretty budget-friendly. For example, there are ferries from Playa Blanca to Fuerteventura for less than €20, or you could go to nearby island Lobos on a dolphin watching boat trip for around €65-70.
When I was there last I took a boat trip from Playa Blanca Lanzarote port to the port in Corralejo, on Fuertaventura. I did this Lanzarote day trip with GetYourGuide, but I’d actually recommend you do it independently as the transfer time to the port was RIDICULOUS! We jumped in a taxi on the way back as it was so awful (over an hour for a 5-minute journey!)
I loved Fuerteventura though, and would love to do a holiday there one day. The impressive landscapes and beautiful coastline were just incredible. Visit the Corralejo Dunes Natural Park, a sprawling expanse of sand dunes that stretch to the sea. The island is also known for its goat cheese, or queso majorero. Don’t miss the opportunity to try this local delicacy and learn about its making process.
We saw the dunes, chilled at a beach bar, and hung around on the seafront.
It was wonderful!
One of the things you must do – especially if you’ve rented a car – is visit Timanfaya National Park. The volcanic park is located about a 30-minute drive from Playa Blanca, and features one active volcano, Timanfaya.
At the park, there’s plenty of things to do like walking the volcanic trail, go on a camel ride, visit the fire mountains and much more. Prices are currently €12 for adults and €6 for children (aged between 7 and 12). This is one of the top Playa Blanca activities to do while you’re in Lanzarote.
Lanzarote has some of the best scuba diving spots in the world, and Playa Blanca is no exception. You can take a diving trip and explore the underwater world and fantastic marine life. But one of the best activities unique to Playa Blanca is Museo Atlántico; a famous dive spot with sculpture. It’s within Lanzarote’s UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve.
Alternatively, go diving in Montana Amarilla, another fantastic and equally captivating dive spot in Playa Blanca.
This 18th-century fortress Castillo de las Coloradas stands tall against the stunning backdrop of the Atlantic Ocean. Here you’ll get to see breathtaking views of the surrounding coastline, making it a great shot if you love photography. Within Castillo de las Coloradas, you’ll find ancient cannons and discover the island’s history of thwarting pirate attacks.
This is a great thing to do in Playa Blanca if you’re with the family, and you can finish the day by strolling along the nearby beach of Colorades to top it all off.
There are several hiking trails in the area, which takes you to the top of a volcanic mountain for stunning views of the coastline. One popular trail is the Montaña Roja hike, which takes you to the summit of the iconic Red Mountain. The trail provides panoramic views of the coast and neighbouring islands, and takes about an hour to complete.
Another option is the Los Ajaches Natural Park trail. This ancient volcanic range offers various routes of varying difficulties, so you can choose one suitable to your level (or just what you’re in the mood for that day). This trail winds through rocky terrain, hidden beaches, and offers breathtaking vistas of the Atlantic Ocean.
If you’re up for a longer trek, the Lanzarote GR 131 trail provides an opportunity to cross the entire island. Starting from the northernmost point of Lanzarote, the trail winds its way through diverse terrains, volcanic landscapes, and charming villages, offering a comprehensive exploration of the island’s beauty. This is quite obviously one for more advanced hikers.
Pay a visit to Bodega Rubicón, a charming winery nestled in the heart of Lanzarote’s wine region. It’s about a 20-minute drive from Playa Blanca town, so definitely doable.
Take a guided tour of the vineyards and learn about the unique cultivation techniques used on the island’s volcanic soil. You’ll get to sample Lanzarote’s best wines in tasting sessions, and most likely buy a bottle to take back afterwards. This is one of the best Playa Blanca attractions for any bon viveurs!
Playa Blanca is home to many fantastic restaurants serving traditional Canarian dishes such as papas arrugadas, fresh fish, and mojo sauce. Don’t forget to try some of the local wines as well if you’ve not filled your cup (or wine glass) at the Bodega Rubicón.
If you’re looking for things to do in Playa Blanca at night, eating is the obvious choice!
Fancy a bit of retail therapy in Playa Blanca? Well, you’re in for a treat! This place is a shopping paradise, full to the brim with charming boutiques and swanky shops selling everything from souvenirs and designer clobber to sparkling jewels and the latest gadgets.
Right, where should you start shopping in Playa Blanca?
Get yourself over to Centro Comercial Papagayo. This big shopping centre has everything you could possibly need. From a jam-packed supermarket and a handy pharmacy to a swarm of fashion outlets and souvenir shops, you’ll find it hard to leave empty-handed.
Fancy a stroll? Take a wander down Avenida de Canarias. It’s the heart of Playa Blanca, with shops, cafes, and restaurants galore! From snazzy beachwear to unique handicrafts, there’s something for everyone.
Don’t forget to explore the charming old town streets too! Calle Limones is a lively pedestrian street known for its chic boutique shops, buzzing bars, and fantastic restaurants. And just around the corner is Calle Correillo, where you’ll find an array of quirky shops, from souvenir spots to glitzy jewellery stores and trendy fashion boutiques.
Playa Blanca is a great place to go shopping if you know where – whether you’re a bargain hunter or a luxury lover. With so many shopping options, you’re bound to find whatever you’re looking for without spending a fortune too!
Although you’ll find plenty of things to do in Playa Blanca, it’s sometimes nice to explore a bit. From island hopping to natural beauty spots to clubbing cities, here are 5 great day trips you can do from Playa Blanca!
La Graciosa, located north of Lanzarote, is the smallest inhabited island in the Canary Archipelago. With a ferry trip of approximately half an hour from Órzola in Lanzarote, it’s an easy and scenic escape from the busier parts of Lanzarote. This tiny paradise is car-free, contributing to a laid-back, leisurely ambience. The island’s sandy streets lead to serene beaches such as Playa de las Conchas and Playa La Cocina, known for their tranquil beauty and crystal-clear waters. Engage in a spot of snorkelling, hiking, or simply basking in the sun.
This bustling resort town is just a short drive from Playa Blanca Lanzarote and is perfect for those looking for a lively atmosphere. The town boasts a beautiful beachfront promenade lined with shops, restaurants, and bars, making it a popular spot for both day-trippers and night owls. Don’t miss the Old Town harbour, where you can enjoy traditional seafood dishes as you admire the local fishing boats. For a more immersive experience, the Rancho Texas Lanzarote Park offers wildlife encounters and pool areas for families.
A mere 2km channel separates Fuerteventura from the untouched Lobos Island, a small islet declared a nature reserve. Visitors can take a ferry from Corralejo in Fuerteventura, with the journey taking around fifteen minutes. The island is a haven for birdwatchers, home to over 130 species of birds. The walking trails offer spectacular views, with the island’s lighthouse, Faro de Lobos, being a popular destination. The pristine beaches of Playa de la Concha and Playa de las Lapas provide perfect spots for snorkelling and swimming.
A journey to the centre of the earth might not be possible, but a trip to Cueva de los Verdes is the next best thing. A half-hour drive from Playa Blanca, these spectacular caves were formed around 3,000 years ago by a volcanic eruption. The guided tour will lead you through a fascinating underground world, with incredible formations and an eerie lake. The cave’s natural acoustics have been put to good use, with concerts occasionally held inside, providing a truly unique musical experience.
It’s easy to get around the Playa Blanca attractions – taxis are easy to hail, simple to use, and cheap too.
Playa Blanca is about 35km from Lanzarote Airport (ACE). Various airport transfer services are available, including shuttles, private cars, and taxis. A pre-booked shuttle bus service costs around €10-€20 per person and takes about 45 minutes, so they say, but took us at the Hotel Gran Castillo Tagoro in Playa Blanca over an hour and a half (it was awful!).
Private transfer services are a bit pricier at around €40-€50 for a four-seater car, but they offer the advantage of avoiding waiting time at the airport (totally worth it, this is how we came back). Taxis from the airport to Playa Blanca cost around €50-€60 and typically take 30-40 minutes.
Taxis are a convenient option for getting around Playa Blanca, especially for shorter distances. The initial fare is around €3, with an additional cost of about €1 per kilometre travelled. Taxis are usually metered, and most drivers speak English, making it a relatively easy mode of transport.
Playa Blanca has a decent local bus service, which connects to other areas like Puerto del Carmen and Arrecife. The bus fare is approximately €2-€4 per trip, depending on the distance. Though buses are the most economical option, the service might not be as frequent or as punctual as in larger cities. A timetable can be found at the local tourist information offices or online.
Hiring a car is a good option if you’re planning to explore Lanzarote beyond Playa Blanca. A compact car typically costs around €20-€30 per day, including insurance. Remember that you need to have a valid driving licence.
Car hire companies often offer the convenience of picking up and dropping off the car at the airport. But keep in mind that parking in Playa Blanca can be challenging during peak season, so it’s always handy if your accommodation has allocated parking.
There’s a ferry service from Playa Blanca to the nearby island of Fuerteventura, with several crossings per day. The journey takes around 30 minutes, and a return ticket costs about €40 for an adult. It’s a convenient way to explore another Canary Island if you have the time. This was one of my favourite Playa Blanca things to do when I visited.
Finally, Playa Blanca itself is quite compact, and many of the attractions are within walking distance from each other. The seafront promenade stretches along the coastline and provides a pleasant walk with views over the sea, beaches, and shops. Walking is free, environmentally friendly, and often the best way to discover hidden gems in the town.
Playa Blanca in Lanzarote is more than just a pretty beach town; it’s a treasure trove of hidden gems. So, whether you’re indulging in mouthwatering seafood at that secret local haunt, finding the best spots for sunset views, or navigating the charming backstreets, you’re in for a real treat.
So go ahead, savour the local flavours, soak up the sunshine, and dive into the rich culture of this coastal paradise.
Enjoy your Playa Blanca escapade!

One of Lanzarote’s highlights is Papagayo, a beautiful set of three beaches nestled in their own coves.
Each of the golden beaches is protected by cliffs that protrude out into the sea resulting. This protection allows the beaches to be calm and swimmable.
To be honest, I didn’t see too many beaches that were like this on Lanzarote until I reached Playa Blanca. Sure, I had heard about beaches in Tenerife , but nothing on this island.
Yet, this area is so jaw-dropping that it has been declared a nature reserve and to enter, you will need to pay a small fee.
Getting to the beaches can be somewhat difficult but if you have rented your own car, you can drive to the beaches (however it is important to clarify if this is allowed with YOUR rental car as there are some stories out there that rental companies fine you if you take their cars to Papagayo).
The other practical way to get to the beaches is by boat, with water taxis available from Marina Rubicon or the Old Harbor departing four times a day to Papagayo.
You can also take a dedicated tour to Papagayo Beaches , where you can enjoy time on a luxury boat and swim in the waters of one of the beautiful beaches.
Alternatively, you can walk to the beaches with the walk taking just over an hour, along the way you will encounter some of Lanzarote’s most desirable nature.
On Wednesdays and Saturdays between 9am-2pm, there is a wonderful local market at Marina Rubicon, specializing in locally-produced and crafted products.
As you peruse the vast array of stalls that have been set up in harborside, you will be able to find fantastic little products from wines to fun trinkets.
It is one of the best places to get local souvenirs and support local craftspeople.
Surrounding the market are plenty of small bars and restaurants where you can enjoy a bite to eat or a quick drink to escape the sun that beats down on the idyllic marina.
See the azure water from a new perspective: gliding above it! With this thrilling parasailing activity , you can fly over the sea at a height of either 50m or 100m.
Choose from either sailing at Puerto del Carmen or Playa Blanca.
Whichever spot you pick, you will be rewarded with spectacular views of the sea and the unique volcanic landscape of the island.
You can choose a flight to fit singles, doubles, or triples, so you can bring along your friends to share in this exhilarating experience.
There is also an option to just ride on the boat if anyone in your party does not want to participate in the parasailing part.

As you look out over the sea, on the horizon you will see the volcanoes of Fuerteventura rise out of the ocean. With just under 10 miles between the two islands, Fuerteventura and the town of Corralejo makes the perfect day trip from Playa Blanca.
Corralejo is a cool, hippie-like town that has a completely different vibe to Playa Blanca and Lanzarote as a whole.
With surf shops lining the main shopping street, you quickly realize just how important surfing is to the area, with the northern beaches on Fuerteventura being some of the best surfing spots in the Canary Islands.
Along with the surf shops, there is an abundance of nice restaurants and hip bars, and each has its own unique vibe.
If you are wanting to do a little more than just explore Corralejo, you can take an organized tour where you will visit both the town and the surrounding nature .
To book your ferry to Fuerteventura from Playa Blanca, click here .
Just off of Fuerteventura’s northern coast and 14km south of Playa Blanca is the rugged island of Isla de Lobos, a nature reserve crammed full of epic landscapes.
There are limits to how many people can visit the island, with a daily limit of 400 people split into two four-hour sessions of 200 people one in the morning and one in the afternoon.
The island is home to over 100 different types of plant species and rare sea birds that use the cliffs that edge the island to nest during the breeding seasons.
The waters around the island are also home to a vast array of marine life such as barracudas and hammerhead sharks.
Isla de Lobos has plenty of hiking trails that wind their way through the island and in the north, you will find a 19th-century lighthouse, as well as a large volcano where you can hike to the top for the best views of the island.
If you are not wanting to hike, the island is also home to some fantastic beaches where you can spend your four hours relaxing on a secluded beach.
Lobos Island is one of the best excursions from Corralejo and anywhere from Lanzarote both!
From Playa Blanca, there are two ways you can reach the island: either planning a trip on your own or taking an organized tour.
If you plan to go independently, you will need to book a ferry crossing to Fuerteventura and from there you will need to take the 10-minute boat ride to Isla de Lobos, which will also need to be booked in advance choosing either the morning or afternoon session .
Three days prior to your trip, you will need to register to enter Isla de Lobos with the government. Ferries to and from both islands are pretty common, so I recommend waiting to book boat tickets until you have confirmed your access to the island.
Alternatively, you can take an organized tour that couples dolphin spotting and two hours on the island in one trip. This is a great way to explore the island in a more hassle-free way.
To the west of Playa Blanca is one of the island’s tallest lighthouses, standing at 50m tall.
Pechiguera Lighthouse was originally built in 1866 and was only 10m tall, however, it remained in use for over 100 hundred years until it was replaced by the current lighthouse.
The cool thing about this lighthouse is that you can see the new and the old one side by side as they kept the old one in its place. It has since been deemed a place of cultural heritage by the government.
Reaching the lighthouse is a nice walk that takes you along the semi-rugged southern Lanzarote coast.
A mostly-paved walkway stretches all the way along the coast from Playa Blanca to the lighthouse, with the walk lasting around 1 hour and 15 minutes.
It is also possible to bike the promenade and complete the journey quicker than on foot, although you may find that the walkway is busy with people walking.
This is one of the best things to do in Lanzarote if you’re wanting to get out of the center and away from the businesses.
This is your chance to visit one of the most unique museums in the world: an underwater museum accessible by scuba diving!
This full-day diving activity first walks you through equipment orientation, safety procedures, and actual diving instructions before you head out to the bay next to the Rubicon Dive Center, where you’ll get into the water.
Once you feel comfortable your instructor will guide you in a short dive in the bay.
You’ll then take a lunch break and afterward head to the underwater museum for an exciting afternoon dive.
At the end of the excursion, you will receive an SSI Basic Diver certification, which is valid for 6 months.
This excursion is a fun way to learn a new skill, see the incredible museum exhibits, and explore the fascinating world under the surface.

To the east of Playa Blanca, just past Marina Rubicon, there is a small defensive fortification that sits on top of a peninsula that juts out and offers fantastic views over the sea and along the cliffs.
Easily walkable from the center of Playa Blanca, the castle is interesting but there is not too much there… at first glance.
However, the magic lies behind the castle where you can walk out onto a rock formation and look at the fantastic cliffs that have formed over time with different layers of rock, each a different color.
Below the castle, the waves come rushing in breaking against the rocks, making an almighty noise. Looking out east, you can see the fantastic Papagayo Beaches that stretch along the coast with their individual coves.
The fort was built in the 18th century to defend the coast from the incessant, barbaric pirate attacks from North Africa.
Playa Blanca stretches along the southern coast of Lanzarote for pretty much 5 and a half miles.
Along this coastline is a pedestrian walkway that connects all of the beaches, bars, and coastal resort hotels- only breaking where the port intersects.
This promenade is perfect for strolling or riding a bike along as you occasionally stop for ice cream or a drink in one of the many establishments that line the walkway.
As the pathway is free from car traffic, moving from beach to beach is quick and makes it easy to find a beach with some space as they start to fill up during the day.
Alternatively, the walkway provides a direct route to the lighthouse and castle on either end, two of Playa Blanca’s most famous sites.
The path is bikeable but in the main parts of the town, you might find that the route is more congested with foot traffic and bars that sprawl out onto the walkway.
Since Playa Blanca is located on the southern tip of Lanzarote, you have the opportunity to see fantastic sunrises to the east and sunsets to the west.
Sunsets on the island happen to be fairly spectacular as the sun lowers into the Atlantic Ocean.
Unlike northern Europe, the sunset time stays fairly standard throughout the year, with there being an under-4-hour difference between the lengths of the shortest and longest days of the year.
To the west of central Playa Blanca and past the port is Playa Flamingo, a lovely sheltered beach with high cliffs to one side.
At the top of these cliffs, you will find Mirador en Playa Flamingo, a vantage point to watch the sunset.
High above the sea, you will be able to watch sailing boats gently glide past the setting sun as the sea reflects a warm orange glow from the sun as the heat of the day starts to dwindle.
The area is peaceful and there are plenty of spots to sit down and watch the magic unfold. At the base of the cliffs, you may find people fishing off the rocks, creating beautiful silhouettes against the orange sky.
Additionally, there is a small fortification in the area and some railings where people have placed love locks during their trips.
There are plenty of places to eat along the seafront in Playa Blanca, but few meet the standards set by La Chalanita.
The fantastic restaurant has epic views out over the sea and is located on the first floor and away from the crowds below. They specialize in traditional Spanish food that is served in large portions with a lot of flair.
The whole menu looked delicious, but I opted for the paella (which you need a minimum of two people for) as I had a craving for rice.
I went a little off the menu with my order and asked for the dish with fish and shellfish only and not a mixture of meat and fish.
It was absolutely delicious and worth the wait for the paella. This is definitely one of the best restaurants in Playa Blanca if you’re craving Spanish food.
There are plenty of seaside bars and restaurants that line the beachfront in Playa Blanca, all offering up pretty much the same menu and drinks.
However, the thing that sets Puerto Blanca out from the rest was the lovely decor, friendly staff, and free wifi.
I’ll be honest, the food wasn’t anything to write home about, but the menu is a crowd-pleaser and will satisfy large groups as the menu is extensive.
At the front of the restaurant is an outdoor seating area where you can sit and watch the waves crash against the seafront and people watch as tourists stroll along the promenade.
I recommend heading there during lunchtime where you can grab a table fairly easily and set up for the day and enjoy a few cocktails in the year-round sunshine.
Rising up on the western edge of Playa Blanca is Montana Roja. The majestic volcano provides amazing views over the resort and the surrounding nature.
The hike to the top takes around 40 minutes for those of relatively good fitness (i.e. not me).
If you are not in the best of shape or not so confident, it is best to take it slow as the incline is quite steep and during the summer months, there is little shade because of the lack of trees on the island.
Be sure to take plenty of water and wear appropriate clothing.
From the top, you can walk around the crater and enjoy uninhibited views of the southern tip of the island.
One of the best times to hike to the top of the volcano is just before sunrise when the air is cool and you can witness the sun rise out of the ocean.
Playa Blanca is located on the far southern tip of the island and is about 24 miles south of the island’s capital and airport in Arrecife .
You will need to reach Playa Blanca by road traveling down one of the island’s superb highways (seriously… the roads on Lanzarote are immaculate).
Depending on your plans, renting a car in the Lanzarote is a great way to get around the islands, which can easily be navigated as there are just a couple of centralized highways that go from north to south.
The drive from Arrecife to Playa Blanca is beautiful as you pass through the volcanoes and some of the country’s rawest landscapes.
The benefit of driving in Lanzarote is that you can stop off along the way and take in the scenery which the other options do not allow you to do.
The drive will take around 36 minutes without any stops, and the island tends not to suffer from traffic jams since there are not that many people living there.
Once you arrive in Playa Blanca, you will need to navigate yourself around the streets of the resort which shouldn’t be too difficult.
If you are not planning to drive a car on Lanzarote, the best hassle-free way to get to Playa Blanca is to order an airport transfer service.
Your assigned driver will track your flight to ensure all is fine and there are no delays, timing their arrival perfectly so you do not need to panic if your flight has been delayed for hours.
Once you exit the baggage claim, they should be waiting for you, holding a sign with your name on it. They will then take you to the agreed location stated when booking the transfer.
There are numerous ways to book a transfer, and some of them are better than others.
I recommend booking this airport transfer service. The price will be around €72 euros to Playa Blanca but is well worth it for peace of mind.
From the airport, you can also take a taxi which is slightly cheaper than a private transfer, costing about €45.
There are often no taxis available at the airport or ones that will be willing to take you all the way to the south of the island as they cannot be guaranteed to be able to secure a return fare back to the Arrecife area.
There are two taxi ranks- one outside the arrival halls of each terminal. It is imperative that you take a taxi from there as other services offered may be illegitimate taxis and you at risk of being scammed.
If you are traveling to Lanzarote on a strict budget, the cheapest way to reach Playa Blanca is via the public bus network.
Bus line number 61 runs from the airport, stopping outside of both terminals one and two, departing hourly on the weekdays with a slightly reduced service on weekends and public holidays.
The journey takes around 1 hour and 15 minutes and costs just over €3. There are also several bus routes that depart from Arrecife bus station, which is the transfer hub for the island.
Almost all buses on Lanzarote connect with or go through Arrecife.
If you are planning to visit Playa Blanca from Fuerteventura, you will need to take a boat from Fuerteventura’s northern coast. Regular ferries depart from Corralejo to Playa Blanca and the journey takes merely 30 minutes.
Both ports are located in the heart of their respective towns and can be easily reached. You will need to book tickets in advance to secure a cheaper deal as those bought just before traveling will be more expensive.
The boat ride is very bumpy; I did the journey during calm weather and you could really feel the boat rocking from side to side.
If you are planning to take this journey and are prone to seasickness, I can’t recommend purchasing some seasickness bands enough.
There are no direct flights between the islands given how close they are, so you will have to go via boat. If you have a car with you, there are car ferries available in addition to the passenger-only boats.

Playa Blanca is a very walkable city and there are sidewalks pretty much everywhere, along with some pedestrian zones such as the seafront.
Alternatively, there are heaps of places offering bikes for rent which is another great way to get around the resort, especially if you are staying close to the outskirts.
Playa Blanca was also the first town on Lanzarote to have its own dedicated bus service that does a loop of the town on a regular basis.
Bus number 30 does a general loop of the resort, stopping at all the main spots and costs around €1.30 for a ticket regardless of how far you are taking it.
Since Playa Blanca was built as a resort town, there are plenty of places to stay centrally within the town with most hotels boasting over 3 stars.
Located centrally between the main part of Playa Blanca and Marina Rubicon is the beautiful five-star hotel Princesa Yaiza .
Each room in the resort comes with a comfortable bed, a kitchenette, and an outdoor space with epic views over the coast, gardens, or the resort’s swimming pools. There is also a wellness center and multiple restaurants on-site.

Playa Blanca Marcastell is a wonderful apartment on the edge of Playa Blanca. Fitting up to four people, the unit is fully equipped with a fully functional kitchen, spacious bathroom, and comfortable living and bedroom spaces.
The apartment is perfect for those who don’t want to eat out every night but still want to be close to all of the action.
There is also a small terrace where you can sit and enjoy the warm evening with a glass of Lanzarote’s famous wine.

If you are looking for a more adult-themed holiday and want to avoid pools crammed with families, then I highly recommend checking out the Boutique Hotel H10 White Studios , an awesome adults-only hotel.
Each room includes a large bed, a clean bathroom, and an outdoor space. There are also several bars, pools, and a restaurant that can be enjoyed by guests.

Thanks for this. As someone who’s not visited the island before and potentially visiting the resort in May, this gave me a good overview and starting point. Will do some further reading. Looking forward to Geoff publishing his ‘Geoff’s Culinary Guide to Playa Blanca’ blog article so we all know what restaurants he likes :p
I don’t actually think you know Playa Blanca very well. There are many excellent restaurants in the resort that are equally as good as the one you mentioned
LOL no one said I was an expert or local to Playa Blanca. I don’t doubt that there are super amazing restaurants beyond what I visited. But, I included the ones I enjoyed. You are always free to drop your tips here too ;)

The small fishing town of Playa Blanca has been transformed into Lanzarote’s flagship tourist destination. These five miles of lush coast are home to the island’s most modern selection of lodging options, mostly four and five-star hotels. Lanzarote’s most recently developed tourist area, Playa Blanca boasts a magnificent climate. In addition, incredible views of the neighbouring islands of Fuerteventura and Lobos are a truly special attraction.
A wide, pleasant seaside promenade winds along the length of the shoreline. All around the Playa Blanca avenue you’ll find innumerable opportunities for relaxation, shopping, recreation and a generous culinary offering, based on local fish and seafood. Just outside Playa Blanca you’ll come across the majestic beaches of Papagayo , a natural protected area within the borders of Los Ajaches Natural Monument, worth exploring once and again. These splendid beaches and coves are made more attractive and relaxing by their distinct natural beauty.
Towards the western edge of this area you’ll find the Playa Blanca port, a spot of vital importance to the island’s commercial and tourist link with nearby Fuerteventura. On the outskirts tourist facilities begins to mix with residential developments. These modern and unique developments expand along the coast up to the urban limit, symbolized by the Pechiguera lighthouse, a cultural hotspot which today remains somewhat abandoned. One spot which is of note for the seeker of sun and sand is Los Charcones . This site features a series of natural pools along the northwestern face of Playa Blanca. Just as on Papagayo’s beaches, a dip in these natural pools will transport you to an overwhelming state of tranquillity.
Playa Blanca’s long-held fishing traditions have their reward in the restaurants of the area. Aromas Yaiza, Casa Pedro, Museo de la Sal, La cocina de Colacho and Brisa Marina all stand out for their culinary offering. Puerto Deportivo Marina Rubicón tacks on another culinary option, Casa Maño. This recreational facility offers a host of leisure activities, featuring bowling alleys, tennis and paddle tennis courts, and countless pleasant terraces, such as Café del Mar. The area’s nightlife radiates out from the marina’s surroundings. The club Jungle’s and the spectacular terrace of Marea are our top recommendations.

Playa Blanca
Originally a sandy-floored south-coast fishing village, happily gazing out on neighbouring Fuerteventura, Playa Blanca has become almost unrecognisable in the past decade. Though still the quieter, smaller, more upmarket cousin of Puerto del Carmen, Lanzarote's southernmost (and sunniest) resort's sprawl of dive schools, cafes, restaurants, hotels and apartment complexes – albeit largely low-rise ones – now stretches almost to the tip of the Papagayo nature reserve. The activity-packed resort has a fairly upscale feel, especially around the swish Marina Rubicón at the eastern end of town, and the seafront promenade is a pleasant spot, as is pale-blonde Playa Blanca itself, though for many there's something undeniably soulless about the whole place. You'll find a hint of local character around the church, where the original fishing village began.
Must-see attractions.
