Below find more detail on all the things worth doing and places worth visiting in Playa Blanca.

Playa Blanca is the sort of place that people fall in love with. It suits couples, families and more senior visitors best.

Do I need a hire car for my holiday in Playa Blanca?

Playa Blanca is more spread out than Puerto del Carmen and Costa Teguise. Depending on where you stay a hire car is not necessary. If your holiday accommodation is a private villa a hire car might be a good idea. The shops and beaches may be a little too far away to comfortably walk. Hire cars are very reasonably priced in Lanzarote. If you decide to get a hire car then pick it up and drop it off at the airport, that way you save a 50 euro taxi fare each way to Playa Blanca.

Guide to Getting around Playa Blanca

Playa Blanca is not a huge town but to walk from one end to the other is a good forty five minutes. There is a great sea front promenade that give access to most of the rest of town including the town centre, beaches, the ferry port, the marina an Papagayo beaches.

If you wish to explore outside your close neighbourhood you may want a faster form of transport.

A hire car is a good option. These are available in Playa Blanca and also at the airport. Best method to secure a hire car for all or a few days of your holiday is to book online.

If you are looking to just explore Playa Blanca and the local areas then a bicycle might suit you. The road are not very busy an distances in town not too far by bike.

Scooters and motorbikes are available to hire in Playa Blanca and in the dependable dry and warm weather can be a nice option.

Playa Blanca Locations Guide

The town is well laid out with a main road that loosely follows the coast from West to East. A sea front promenade goes from the West to the East of Playa Blanca.

El Faro (the lighthouse) At the Western end of town is Faro Park and the light house. The area has some small rocky and not very safe beaches. Rental properties are mainly villas with pools for more luxury accommodation. There are some shops and facilities at this end of town as well but not very much.

playa flamingo playa blanca

Playa Flamingo Moving East we come to the area with an Aquapark and smaller villas for rent. The sheltered beach and complex of Playa Flamingo is here plus some great beach front hotels.

Playa Flamingo beach is a lovely white sand sheltered beach with sea wall keeping out dangerous waves and currents. On the promenade passing the beach are a number of shops and places to eat. After a hard days sunbathing and swimming retire to a restaurant table on the side of the promenade and enjoy some well earned sustenance.

If you just want a simple holiday and stay in one nice area then it is possible here.

Ferry Port Next location eastward along the coast is the Ferry Port area. Some lovely bars can be found here with a reasonably sized supermarket. The popular complex of Puerto Chico with varying sized accommodation is here. If you fancy exploring another island you can hop on a fast ferry with a twenty minute journey time to the Northerly Fuerteventura town of Corralejo. You can walk to both the town centre beach and Playa Flamingo within a few minutes.

Town Centre East again is Playa Blanca Town Centre. There is pedestrian only shopping area with seafront promenade, bars and restaurants. Great place to shop, sit, eat and watch ferries coming and going. The town centre beach is here. This is a safe beach.

playa dorada playa blanca view to marina

Playa Dorada Good parking for beach in the Centro commercial Papagayo shopping centre. Nice place to swim, sunbath with food and drinks from the beach adjacent shopping centre. The beach is nice golden sand. Swimming is safe. You are close to local facilities plus the Marina Rubicon a short walk along the promenade.

Marina Rubicon Not just a marina full of lovely yachts and boats to look at. There is a large shopping centre plus a quay side shopping area with bars and restaurants great to relax and watch the world go by. Water front bars with table set outside great all day and especially around sunset. Nearly is the Volcan five star hotel. Nice relaxed ambience and great place to spend an evening.

Las Coloradas Safe communal area with a commercial centre with some nice shops, bars and restaurants. Secluded beach marking the end of the Playa Blanca Promenade. Access by foot and car to Papagayo beaches. Good beach front four star hotel and lots of nice villas. Probably need a hire car to stay here, town centre around a twenty minute walk but does have some shops and places to eat.

Papagayo Beaches Arguable the best beaches in Lanzarote. Series of amazing golden sand beaches, many linking up at low tide. The beaches face South meaning the are sheltered from the prevailing wind in Lanzarote. At the last beach is an amazing sunset bar.

Playa Blanca Tourist guide summary

Playa Blanca has a lot going for it. A lovely Marina, ferry to Fuerteventura, high quality accommodation, good roads and access, an aqua park, and loads more. Amazing and safe beaches both in town and just outside. Probably the most important consideration to sum up the town as a whole and as a holiday destination is the overall vibe and feel. The vibe and feel of Playa Blanca is well spaced out quality town all self contained in its own part of the island. The only possible negatives for certain age groups could be its few late night partying facilities. Being on the souther tip of Lanzarote its a longer drive to see other parts of the island, this is only a matter of fifteen to twenty minutes though. Playa Blanca is loved by many visitors whom happily return to their home from home in Playa Blanca every year.

1. Explore Castillo de las Coloradas, one of the best things to do in Playa Blanca

Begin your vacation by strolling along the Playa Blanca promenade , where you’ll encounter the iconic Castillo de las Coloradas , which stands as a symbol of the city. Visiting this castle, also known as Torre del Águila or Castillo de San Marcial de Rubicón, is among the top things to do in Playa Blanca .

Castillo de las Coloradas, playa blanca lanzarote things to do

The Castillo de las Coloradas was constructed in the 1700s and served as a fortress to safeguard the city from pirate attacks that were prevalent along the Canary Coast during that era. Despite its age, the castle exudes a magical vibe and remains one of the prime locations to witness the mesmerizing sunset in Playa Blanca .

2. Playa Blanca, the main beach in Playa Blanca, Lanzarote

There are many beaches in Playa Blanca, Lanzarote , but the main one that shares its name with the town is Playa Blanca Beach , situated in the heart of the city. While it may not be considered one of the best beaches in Lanzarote , Playa Blanca Beach still offers a pleasant spot for a refreshing swim just a few steps away from the town center.

Playa Blanca, playa blanca beach resort

This beach tends to be quite popular and busy. If you want a more tranquil setting to relax and enjoy the sea in peace, you might consider exploring one of the other beaches in Playa Blanca . However, Playa Blanca Beach boasts crystal-clear waters and white sands, providing a delightful environment to bask in the sun and enjoy a beautiful afternoon.

In addition, it is one of the best beaches in Playa Blanca for families with children , as it is equipped with lifeguards and various facilities to make your visit hassle-free. Just a short stroll away, you can find the town’s promenade, offering a range of restaurants for a leisurely lunch and shops to cater to any essentials you may have forgotten for your beach day.

3. Visit Marina Rubic ón and its market, another memorable thing to do in Playa Blanca

Marina Rubicón is the vibrant port of Playa Blanca , representing one of the most picturesque and characteristic areas of Playa Blanca’s old town , and the most popular places to hire a boat in Lanzarote . This city is a focal point for both tourists and locals, providing a lively atmosphere regardless of the time of your visit.

3. Visit Marina Rubicón and its market, another memorable thing to do in Playa Blanca

If you’re in the mood for some fresh fish and seafood, I highly recommend dedicating at least one lunch or dinner to savoring the culinary delights offered by some of the best restaurants in Lanzarote . If you’re looking for nighttime entertainment, you’ll also discover some of the most popular clubs in Lanzarote within this area.

On Wednesday and Saturday mornings, between 9:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m., Marina Rubicón hosts a local market. This market in Playa Blanca, Lanzarote, showcases a diverse array of local products and crafts. As I was strolling along the wooden walkways overlooking the sea and admiring the luxurious boats and yachts, I couldn’t resist the temptation to purchase some souvenirs to commemorate my time in Playa Blanca, Lanzarote .

4. Playa Papagayo, one of the most paradisiacal beaches near Playa Blanca, Lanzarote

Papagayo Beach stands out as one of the best beaches in Spain , offering an indispensable experience in Playa Blanca, Lanzarote . Nestled within the Los Ajaches Natural Monument , this authentic paradise is approximately a 20-minute drive from the town, so you don’t need to go far to find some of the most stunning beaches in Playa Blanca . However, the final 2.5 miles is a dirt road. While it might seem a bit tedious, I can assure you that it is well worth your time.

Entry to this park comes at a cost of €3 per vehicle, granting you admission to a haven of white sands and emerald waters. Even if your travel itinerary for Lanzarote spans only a couple of days, I highly recommend spending some time at this beach. For those with more time on their hands, consider the option of spending a night at the only campsite in Lanzarote , situated in one of Playa Papagayo’s secluded coves.

Playa Papagayo, beaches in playa blanca lanzarote

If you have a tight schedule, I suggest taking this tour , which allows you to kayak along the coast from Playa Blanca and partake in snorkeling to discover the marine life of Playa Papagayo.

For those seeking a more luxurious experience, I recommend this catamaran cruise , which is one of the best boat excursions in Lanzarote . This cruise takes you along the coastline, providing a unique perspective of the beautiful landscape from the water. As you enjoy the journey, indulge in a delightful lunch, take advantage of the open bar, and engage in various water activities in Playa Blanca .

5. Discover the Atlantic Museum of Lanzarote, one of the most unique things to do in Playa Blanca

While there are many things to do in Playa Blanca , only one offers the opportunity to immerse yourself in an entirely new world – a visit to the Atlantic Museum of Lanzarote . Distinguished by its exceptional location, approximately 50 feet below the surface, and surrounded by a fantastical marine environment, this museum stands out as a truly unique attraction.

Atlantic Museum of Lanzarote, lanzarote things to do playa blanca

During my recent visit to Playa Blanca, I opted for this tour , which is one of my favorite excursions in Lanzarote . The experience included three dives guided by a seasoned professional who provided thorough explanations, ensuring I could fully enjoy the adventure with a sense of tranquility. Beyond marveling at the underwater art gallery and sculptures crafted by artist Jason de Caires Taylor, I explored underwater landscapes featuring volcanic lava formations and intricate caves and encountered vibrant marine life, such as the colorful parrot fish. For me, this experience is a must-do in Playa Blanca .

I got my PADI certificate many years ago, but if you’re not a certified diver, fear not – you can still partake in the adventure through this snorkeling excursion designed to explore the Atlantic Museum of Lanzarote.

6. Playa Dorada, one of the must-visit beaches in Playa Blanca

Playa Dorada in Playa Blanca , Lanzarote , stands out as another gem among the best beaches in Playa Blanca , offering a serene environment with crystal-clear waters and an expansive stretch of sandy shoreline. Situated just a short walk from the city center, it provides a quieter atmosphere, making it an excellent choice for a leisurely stroll.

Playa Dorada, things to do in playa blanca

This beach is particularly well-suited for families with children, thanks to its horseshoe shape, which minimizes waves. Playa Dorada has all the amenities you need for a delightful beach day, including vigilant lifeguards, refreshing showers, well-maintained restrooms, beachside bars, and umbrella rentals. Additionally, the surrounding area features convenient access to shops, supermarkets, and restaurants, with some of the best all-inclusive hotels in Lanzarote located nearby.

7. Playa Flamingo, one of the most beautiful beaches in Playa Blanca, Lanzarote

Playa Flamingo is one of the must-visit destinations in Playa Blanca, Lanzarote , offering a breathtaking landscape surrounded by the Montaña Roja volcano. This 650-foot-long cove, though artificial, captivates every visitor with its golden sand, turquoise waters, and palm-fringed shores.

Playa Flamingo, hotels in playa blanca lanzarote

Playa Flamingo in Playa Blanca is protected by two breakwaters, ensuring calm waters and creating ideal conditions for families with children or snorkeling enthusiasts. Divers are drawn to this beach due to its excellent underwater visibility that allows you to observe a diverse array of sea creatures just a few feet below the surface. And don’t forget to bring your snorkel gear for some underwater adventure!

The beach provides convenient amenities, including showers and services for renting beach chairs and umbrellas, ensuring a relaxing and comfortable day. Green spaces and designated rest spots offer opportunities to enjoy the picturesque views without staying directly on the sand. Visiting Playa Flamingo, with its serene charm, is undoubtedly one of the most relaxing things to do in Playa Blanca .

8. Climb the Monta ña Roja volcano, one of the most rewarding things to do in Playa Blanca

If you are an adventurous traveler looking for a break from the beach, climbing the Montaña Roja crater is one of the most exciting activities in Playa Blanca . As one of the most popular hiking routes in Lanzarote , this trek is characterized by its relatively moderate difficulty, offering a refreshing connection with nature.

Montaña Roja, best hotels in playa blanca lanzarote

8. Climb the Montaña Roja volcano, one of the most rewarding things to do in Playa Blanca

The 2.5-mile trail leading to Montaña Roja volcano in Playa Blanca, Lanzarote , unveils a distinct environment as you ascend. The trail zigzags through lava and volcanic ash, which gives the mountain a desert-like and solitary ambiance with its predominantly black and reddish stone. Allow yourself to be immersed in the captivating hues until you reach the summit, where you can turn around and appreciate the vastness of the Atlantic in contrast.

At the peak, your efforts are rewarded with stunning views: a sprawling 1,100-foot-diameter crater, the peaks of the Ajaches Natural Monument, and panoramic vistas of Lobos Island and Fuerteventura . Undoubtedly, this hiking experience stands out as one of the best things to do in Playa Blanca, Lanzarote .

9. Go to Aqualava Waterpark, a fun thing to do in Playa Blanca with children

In addition to its natural wonders, Playa Blanca offers enjoyable attractions, such as the Aqualava Waterpark , the best water park near Playa Blanca, Lanzarote . This water park is a delightful retreat on warmer days and a must-visit destination, especially for families with children.

A range of attractions awaits you, including a wave pool , a lazy river , and a variety of waterslides . The park’s decoration draws inspiration from the island’s volcanoes, creating a vibrant and colorful environment for family and friends to enjoy.

Aqualava Waterpark, playa blanca lanzarote weather

You can even visit on cooler days, as the water park features a sustainable air conditioning system utilizing geothermal energy from the volcanic landscape, ensuring comfortable temperatures year-round.

For a hassle-free experience, I highly recommend booking your tickets in advance so you can skip the lines.

10. Los Charcones, one of the most fascinating places to visit in Playa Blanca

To cap off your visit to Playa Blanca , I highly recommend going to Los Charcones , an oasis of tranquility nestled in the heart of the Yaiza municipality. If you are looking for a serene swimming spot away from the bustling Playa Blanca beaches , this destination offers the perfect alternative, and it’s just a short distance away.

Los Charcones, best beaches in playa blanca

These natural pools in Lanzarote come to life as the tide rises, filling the various nooks of the volcanic terrain with water. It’s crucial to time your visit right, considering that during high tide, the pools are submerged beneath the waves. I recommend checking a tide table or consulting a local to determine the optimal time to go. And don’t forget to bring your water shoes to protect your feet from any rocks.

Reaching Los Charcones is a quick 20-minute drive from Playa Blanca’s town center, but finding it can be a bit challenging. The road is rugged, filled with potholes and volcanic rock, and lacks clear markings. I recommend driving to the abandoned hospital near Montaña Roja and continuing west of the Pechiguera Lighthouse to find the best pools. Exploring Los Charcones is surely one of the most delightful and fun things to do in Playa Blanca, Lanzarote , so it’s well worth it.

Hi Joanne, Fortunately, Playa Blanca is flatter than some areas of Lanzarote, so it’s a good choice. As for scooter accessibility, it’s worth checking into the submarine ride or the this dolphin boat tour . Good luck! 🙂

18 Best Things To Do in Playa Blanca, Lanzarote

Playa flamingo lanzarote

Playa Blanca is the southernmost resort in Lanzarote and it has grown quite a bit in the last few years, from the sleepy fishing village it once was. If you're planning to spend your holiday in Playa Blanca, you may be wondering what there is to do in the resort and what can you expect in terms of hotels, beaches, restaurants and entertainment.

1. Spend your day sunbathing on Playa Blanca beach

2. playa dorada , 3. playa flamingo, 4. take long walks on avenida maritima, 5. playa de montana roja, 6. playa blanca market, 7. papagayo beaches, 8. catamaran cruise to papagayo beaches, 9. aqualava water park - great day out for kids, 10. marina rubicon, 11. take the ferry to corralejo, fuerteventura, 12. boat trip to los lobos, 13. find the spoon in concrete, 14. los charcones, 15. los hervideros, 16. wine tasting in la geria, 17. events in playa blanca, 18. atlantico museum.

Playa Blanca is quieter compared to Puerto del Carmen and even Costa Teguise, but it's an ideal place for a family holiday in Lanzarote. Here you have great beaches within walking distance, nice restaurants, a water park for kids and lots of opportunities for boat trips directly from Marina Rubicon.

The resort of Playa Blanca has not one, but 3 beaches in total, all great for swimming and spending the day in the sun.

Playa Blanca beach, named just like the resort, is right in the center of town, close to all the bars and restaurants, so it's obviously very popular and gets busy quickly.

On Playa Blanca beach you will find all the normal amenities of an urban beach: sunbeds (around 10 Euros for 2 sunbeds for the day), shower and foot showers, toilets and a lifeguard on site.

Playa Blanca beach, also known as the White Beach, has been awarded the Blue Flag distinction and it's a really nice and clean beach, although a bit small compared to its big popularity.

Playa Dorada is a golden sand beach, staying true to its name which translates to Golden beach. This beach is located close to Marina Rubicon.

Playa Dorada beach is a wide and spacious beach, with plenty of sunbeds and the water is clear and calm, ideal for swimming and safe for children.

Close to Playa Dorada you have 2 options for great hotels in Playa Blanca:

  • Dreams Lanzarote Playa Dorada Resort & Spa (4 star hotel)
  • Boutique Hotel H10 White Suites - Adults Only (4 star hotel)

playa flamingo playa blanca lanzarote

Playa Flamingo may well be the prettiest of all 3 beaches, but this is a personal opinion and you should explore all of them in order to make up your mind.

Playa Flamingo is further from the heart of the resort, but you still get restaurants and small shops to find something to eat and drink during the day.

This beach has all the amenities you would expect, from sunbeds to toilets and showers. It is a safe beach for children, with turquoise water, very calm and with no big waves or currents.

You have 2 great hotels close to Playa Flamingo Beach:

  • Iberostar Selection Lanzarote Park (5 star hotel)
  • Relaxia Lanzasur Club + Aqualava (4 star hotel)

what to do in playa blanca lanzarote

One of the best activities in Playa Blanca is to take long walks along the coastline on the Paseo Maritimo, admiring the great ocean view. You could even walk all the way from Playa Flamingo to Playa de Montana Roja.

One of the best things to do in Playa Blanca (and Lanzarote in general) is to explore the area on foot, as the coast offers so many breathtaking views and it's also a good option for overcast days when it's not possible to sunbathe.

This beach is further away from the center of the resort, so it's less popular and less crowded than the other 3 beaches mentioned before. This beach is great for people looking for a rather quiet place in Lanzarote, which is still part of a resort, so you do have quick access to restaurants and bars.

In fact, there are some good hotels close to the beach and a lot of private villas as well:

  • H10 Rubicón Palace (5 stars)
  • Hotel SBH Royal Mónica (4 stars)

lanzarote markets

Playa Blanca Market happens twice a week, on Wednesdays and Saturdays.

Although not as large and busy as the market in Teguise, this event attracts people from other neighboring resorts such as Puerto del Carmen.

One or two hours is more than enough to see all that it's on for trade, but then you can spend another hour or so drinking a coffee while taking a break from all the souvenir shopping.

Playa papagayo beach lanzarote

Playas de Papagayo may well be the best beaches in Lanzarote and a visit there is a MUST while in Lanzarote, especially if you are staying in Playa Blanca.

You can even walk from Playa Blanca to Papagayo beaches, but we wouldn't recommend it, especially if you've got children with you. There's nowhere to hide from the sun on the way and by the time you get there, you will most likely be very tired.

By car, it's just 10 minutes away and there you have a set of 5 amazing beaches, ideal for swimming. Just bring your own water and snacks with you, as there are no shops inside the natural park, but there is a restaurant overlooking the Papagayo beach, which has really beautiful views.

We absolutely recommend a visit to Papagayo beach, especially if you're staying in Playa Blanca, which is the closest resort. It's the best day trip from Playa Blanca if you wish to see picture-perfect beaches, with mesmerizing turquoise water.

catamaran cruise papagayo lanzarote

If you don't have a car rental and you don't feel tempted on walking that much either, the boat trip to Papagayo beaches may be exactly what you need.

So why not take a cruise to the Papagayo Beaches on a sailing catamaran? You will enjoy a free lunch, an unlimited bar and watersports activities. All equipment is provided.

  • Pickup included
  • Duration 4 hours
  • Lunch on board
  • Unlimited draft beer, sangria, soft drinks and water
  • Free cancellation up to 24 hours before the activity starts

aqualava waterpark playa blanca lanzarote

If you're looking for things to do in Lanzarote with kids, then a day out at the waterpark may be exactly what you need.

The park is not large, but it has enough slides and attractions to keep most kids happy.

  • Includes All-access tickets, Sunbeds, Umbrellas
  • Recommended for families with kids
  • Free cancellation up to 24 hours before activity starts

marina rubicon playa blanca lanzarote

One of the best things to do in Playa Blanca is to just walk and take in the landscapes, the lovely weather and pleasant temperatures.

Marina Rubicon is just 15-20 minutes away from the town center and it's the place from where all the boat trips leave, either for snorkeling trips, or to go to Papagayo Playas, Fuerteventura or Los Lobos island.

You will find some nice cafes and restaurants to try out after looking at the boats and it's a nice walk to do in the mornings, before the sun starts to really burn, especially during the summer months.

Ferry lanzarote fuerteventura

While in Lanzarote, why not explore a bit of the sister island Fuerteventura, especially since the two of them are so close to one another?

The trip on the ferry between Lanzarote and Fuerteventura takes around 45 minutes to one hour and you will soon arrive in Corralejo, the most popular resort in Fuerteventura.

There you can have an entire day to explore the town, so read our list of things to do in Corralejo . You can also take a short taxi trip to Corralejo Natural Park and explore the dunes and the endless beaches - Oliva beach and Flag beach, some of the most popular and best beaches in Fuerteventura.

  • Transport to the ferry and back to the pickup point
  • Roundtrip ferry ticket & 5 hours of free time

los lobos island canary islands spain

If you want to explore one of the smaller islands close to Lanzarote, then Los Lobos is the closest and the ships leave right from Marina Rubicon.

You can opt for a full day with a guide, where you will explore the small island and swim in the most pristine waters. The island of Los Lobos is not inhabited, so you will see a truly untouched landscape, with no asphalt roads or houses, just nature and small beaches, ideal for relaxation.

  • Duration 5 hours
  • Picnic lunch and drinks

This is somewhat of an unusual attraction in Playa Blanca and it's more of a wild hunt started from holiday forums on Facebook.

There is a certain spoon stuck in concrete somewhere in Playa Blanca and people are walking about looking at the pavement trying to find it. It's sort of a challenge!

So if you see people looking down at their feet while walking along the promenade... now you know why. And maybe who knows... you will even find yourself! If you do, take a photo of it and post it on your dedicated Lanzarote Forum group on Facebook (you will find the link in the blue box below the article).

This is a set of natural pools close to Playa Blanca, where you can go swimming and snorkeling.

However, you need to be careful as the landscape is rocky and not friendly for small children. Also, be careful at the tide level and the state of the ocean when you go there, because it's not advisable to get in the water when the ocean is rough and there are big waves. Otherwise, the landscape is nice and provides a pleasant walk on an exploration day.

Lanzarote los hervideros canary islands

Less than 15 km from Playa Blanca you can find one of the most incredible place to see in Lanzarote: Los Hervideros .

Go there to see the force of the ocean and take your time to admire the landscape, while you get to see another side of Lanzarote.

la geria lanzarote vineyards

The protected landscape of La Geria is only a short distance away from Playa Blanca, less than 30 minutes by car and it's the place to visit if you want to sample wine that is locally produced in Lanzarote.

You can see for yourself how grapevine is cultivated in Lanzarote and you can taste several types of wines at the popular bodegas like Bodega La Geria or Bodega Rubicon.

Visiting La Geria is one of the easiest short trips you can do from Playa Blanca, as it's so easy and fast to get here.

playa blanca carnival lanzarote

There are lots of things happening in Playa Blanca, from the annual carnival in February or March, to the cheese festival and also other types of concerts and events.

These provide a nice way to pass the time and it's a great way to know more about local life and their culture and traditions.

Playa Blanca is a great resort in Lanzarote, ideal for couples and families with kids, but maybe not so suited for people who want to party all night long.

museo atlantico lanzarote

UPDATE: Officially, the Atlantico Museum is closed and some of the statues have been removed by the authorities, while this action has been condemned by diving schools in Playa Blanca.

This may not be everyone's cup of tea, but Atlantico Museum is a unique attraction in Europe and situated right off the coast of Playa Blanca.

You can go underwater to see the beautiful statues, that have started to attract marine life and in doing so they've revived the ecosystem around this part of Lanzarote. If you like diving, don't miss this experience in Playa Blanca!

Playa Blanca Guide

So, you’ve arrived on Lanzarote, you’ve settled into one of our  villas in Playa Blanca  and you’re ready to dive into the best that this vibrant town has to offer. To help you put together your Playa Blanca itinerary, we’re covering the best places to see and things to do in and around the town.

tourist office playa blanca lanzarote

Where is Playa Blanca in Lanzarote?

Playa Blanca (meaning “White Beach”) is the most southerly resort on the island of Lanzarote, which is itself situated just 80 miles off the coast of Africa. Surrounded by numerous golden beaches and azure seas, and enjoying almost year-round sunshine with temperatures averaging 21°C (72°F), this is an amazing place to enjoy a family holiday or a sunshine getaway for couples. With Lanzarote’s mountain ranges blocking the majority of trade winds coming from the northeast, Playa Blanca tends to be drier and hotter than the island’s northern region – so it’s no surprise that the resort is such a popular holiday destination for tourists across the globe.

General information

What started as a small fishing village has now grown into the full-blown holiday resort we see today, thanks to an insatiable thirst for sand, sunbeds and high-quality accommodation across the Canary Islands. Though slightly smaller than neighbouring resorts, visitors come to Playa Blanca to enjoy the quieter, more relaxing atmosphere you’d struggle to find at the often-rammed beaches of Fuerteventura and Tenerife. Despite its smaller size, Playa Blanca has a lot to offer holiday-goers travelling to this part of the world.

Being a relatively new tourist destination, Playa Blanca has been able to develop based upon the best ideas of others. For example, while there are places to eat, drink and dance until the early hours, there are no mega-nightclubs with hundreds of people pouring onto the streets at closing time. However, if you want to see more of Lanzarote’s nightlife, there are plenty of clubs 25 miles away in the resort of Puerto del Carmen. Developers have also chosen to build the luxurious Marina Rubicon here, and surrounded by designer boutiques and eateries overlooking the yachts, it definitely brings an upmarket feel to the resort.

Things to see in Playa Blanca, Lanzarote

As the fastest growing resort on the island, there are countless things to see and do in Playa Blanca. From island-hopping boat tours and scuba diving lessons to finding out more about local culture at Playa Blanca’s historic castle, Castillo de las Colorados, there’s something for everyone in this vibrant resort. Alternatively, tourists can take the coastal walk to the resort’s lighthouse, Faro de Pechiguera, where the route promises first-class views across the North Atlantic waters to Fuerteventura.

If you’re looking to top up your tan, the resort is home to four beaches for you to choose from, which are: Playa Blanca, Playa Flamingo, Playa Dorada and Papagayo. Playa Blanca beach, which the resort is named after, is based in the heart of the resort and proudly boasts a European Blue Flag for cleanliness. Just a short walk to the west of the town, you’ll find the attractive Playa Flamingo, situated close to the resort’s newer developments around Montaña Roja. Playa Dorada, which translates as The Golden Beach, tends to offer a calmer sea, making it a popular hotspot for anyone taking a morning swim. Located at the eastern end of Playa Blanca, the collection of five smaller beaches form Papagayo, which is a protected national park – and while sparsely-populated, these largely untouched bays are arguably the most well-known beaches in the area.

If you’re looking for what do in Playa Blanca on a Wednesday, there’s a small market that takes place at the Marina Rubicon every week at 9:00am to 2:00pm. Here, you can shop for jewellery, clothes and souvenirs before going into the shopping centre or to the nearby boardwalk for a bite to eat. The market is also open on a Saturday between the same times, and, although there are only around 30 stalls, you’ll find plenty of gifts and trinkets to bring home with you – which makes it more than worth visiting while you’re staying in Playa Blanca.

Visiting Playa Blanca: shopping opportunities

If you were hoping to do some shopping in Lanzarote, then look no further than the vibrant resort of Playa Blanca, where you’ll find the main shopping area in the centre of town – which is one third pedestrianised. Here you will find shopping outlets for a wide range of clothes, electrical goods, alcohol and cigarettes. On a practical note, you will also find many cashpoints, supermarkets, a chemist and lots of places to eat – not forgetting that our office and friendly team of local experts are also situated here, should you need your very own Lanzarote guide!

Running parallel to the high street, just one block away is the sea-front boardwalk. The boardwalk in Playa Blanca runs the full length of the resort (5 miles) and passes numerous beaches, Marina Rubicon, the harbour and too many restaurants to mention. If you’re looking for places to go running in Lanzarote, the boardwalk is an ideal place for walking or jogging and is wheelchair friendly too. For the most part, this section of Playa Blanca is populated by restaurants and cafés, as well as a few shops. The sea views here are beautiful during the day, but an evening meal is a must to fully appreciate the views of the orange sunset over the Atlantic Ocean. While there’s lots to do in Playa Blanca, sightseers and shoppers should get out of the resort to discover what delights Lanzarote has to offer. There’s a regular bus service that travels between Playa Blanca, Puerto del Carmen (the Biosfera Plaza, which is a shopping centre in Lanzarote) and Arrecife, the capital of Lanzarote – as well as the large shopping centre of Deiland. This really will give you every opportunity to shop ’til you drop for everything and anything, at prices that are often cheaper than those back in the UK. Please note that most of the shops in Arrecife close between the hours of 2pm and 4.30pm every day. If you have a hire car then allow 25 minutes to Puerto del Carmen and a further 10 minutes to get to Arrecife.

Places to eat in Playa Blanca

From Mediterranean tapas bars to Indian-inspired eateries, there’s no shortage of choice when it comes to dining in the resort of Playa Blanca. Offering everything from seafood paella and tapas to freshly made burgers, rest assured that there’ll be something to whet your tastebuds amid the resort’s array of restaurants. So, whether you’re looking to try the local cuisine or just want to avoid the hassle of washing up, make sure you venture out to sample some of the mouthwatering menus that Playa Blanca has to offer.

Lanzarote tourist info: travelling around the island

For those of you who are quite happy to remain in the resort, you’ll be glad to know that car hire is no longer a necessity when staying in any of our villas, thanks to the ease of accessing public transport. So, if you can’t decide whether to stay in Playa Blanca or Puerto del Carmen, why not enjoy the best of both resorts by relaxing in the laidback area of Playa Blanca and travelling the short distance into the island’s longest established resort?

There’s now a bus service that runs back and forth across the resort of Playa Blanca and all our villas are a short walk away from any of the bus stops. For the timetable and a map of the stops  click here . The service costs less than €2 per trip and runs every half-hour from 6:30am until 10pm (7 days a week). Of course, if you do want to be within walking distance of the town and beaches, we have lots of villas to suit. Travelling up the eastern coast are the fishing villages of Punta Mujeres, Arriets and Orzola, plus the attractions of Jameos del Agua and La Cueva de Los Verdes. These are amazing structures formed from the cooling lava which flows to create caves and tunnels. Heading north over the mountains there’s the Mirador del Rio, the highest point on Lanzarote with a viewing platform from which to enjoy stunning views of the neighbouring island of La Graciosa. Take a short drive from here down through to Haria, known as the Valley of a Thousand Palms, on to the village of San Bartolome and you’ll find the Cesar Manrique Foundation. This is a tribute to the late local artist who influenced much of the architecture and strict building controls on the island.

If you want to travel around the island, we can arrange excursions, car hire or a private driver for you. From the green lagoons of El Golfo to the martian landscapes of the Timanfaya National Park, there really are the most amazing places to see on Lanzarote – not least the countryside, which still bears the scars of the volcanic eruptions that started in 1730 and lasted for more than 2000 days!

Planning your trip to Lanzarote? Wondering what to do in Playa Blanca? Here’s our complete guide to all the best places and things to do in the area, so you can make the most of your stay:

  • the most beautiful beaches in Playa Blanca
  • Places to see in town
  • excursions around the island
  • fun activities in the water or on land…

This is our personal selection of 15 must-do activities in Playa Blanca.

what to do playa blanca Lanzarote activities visit

This opinion is completely independent , based on our experiences. We visited the region anonymously, making our own choices and paying our bills in full.

1. Enjoy Playa Flamingo, our favourite beach in Playa Blanca

Playa Flamingo

Playa Blanca has 3 main beaches. Our favorite beach is Playa Flamingo , a little west of downtown. It’s just a few minutes’ walk from the center, and there are plenty of hotels around. We find it the most beautiful in terms of scenery, with its palm tree, the elevated view on one side, and the Montana Roja volcano in the marvelous background.

Playa Flamingo and Montana Roja

The beach is very well equipped with showers and a restaurant. It is rather long with fine sand. Thanks to two dikes, the water is calm. And as everywhere around Lanzarote, the water is crystal clear and invites you to cool off.

Our favorite car rental platform : DiscoverCars

2. Choose Playa Dorada, the largest

Playa Dorada

The best-known and largest beach is Playa Dorada. It’s right in the heart of Playa Blanca, right next to the famous Princesa Yaiza hotel. It’s rather long (300m) but still a little wide. The sand is fine. And once again, the water is magnificently transparent, with variations in turquoise color.

clear water at Playa Dorada

There are showers, bars and restaurants. The beach also has plenty of sun loungers and parasols for hire. See more photos .

4. Stroll along the waterfront, spoon and crabs

Beachfront promenade in Playa Blanca

What we love most about Playa Blanca is the very long seafront promenade. It offers beautiful views all the way along and is in very good condition. Walking south, you can see Montana Roja, walking north, you can see Papagayo in the distance. And looking south, you can see the island of Fuerteventura on a clear day.

Spoon in cement in Playa Blanca

Along the way, you can look for the spoon in the cement. We recommend that you use Google Maps to find out which corner of the boardwalk it’s in, and then look for it. Because if you had to search the whole length of the boardwalk, it would take quite a few days… It’s fun. It keeps kids busy, and for adults, it gets you into meditation. But people around you might wonder what you’re up to!

Red crabs

In the same area of the spoon (next to the anchor), look also at the rocks below. At certain times of the day and tide, you may see huge red crabs scuttling around on the black rocks.

WHERE TO STAY IN Playa Blanca

Our favorites: neighborhoods and hotels

Centrally located, close to beaches and activities. We like: Hotel Princesa Yaiaza, a must-see resort – see prices, photos and availability

On the quieter Montana Roja side. We like: Hotel Kamezi villas, with private pools – see prices, photos and availability

Near the Marina and Papagayo beaches. We like: Hotel CalaLanzarote, boutique-hotel for adults – See prices, photos and availability

Hotel Cala Lanzarote

5. Admire the Castillo

Castillo de Playa Blanca

Many stop at the Marina, but we recommend you continue walking along the promenade further east. You’ll find the tower: El Castillo o Torre del Aguila. It was designed by engineer Claudio L’Isle in 1741 to defend Lanzarote’s south coast from pirate attacks. It was built in 1769. The tower has a small drawbridge and could house soldiers. The army stopped using it in 1936.

5. Explore the wilder Papagayo Beaches

PLaya de Papagayo

Papagayo and its neighboring stretches of golden sand are considered Lanzarote’s best beaches and form one of the island’s main attractions. Their large sandy stretches have remained mostly untouched, with no paved roads leading to them. There are a few buildings, only at the last cove which is Papagayo beach. These beaches are located on the Macizo de los Ajaches (Natural Monument), the island’s oldest territory formed around 14 million years ago (hence the rounded peaks and deep ravines).

Papagayo beach hike

There are no roads to get there, only a very bumpy track. Your options for getting there are

  • walk from Playa Blanca to Papagayo (along other beaches) a very pretty hike (but without shade): 2km each way if you go all the way.
  • take the car with the bumpy track and pay parking at the end (beware, you’re generally not covered by car insurance)
  • Take a boat trip to see them from the sea. The views are magnificent, but please note that you will not be able to go on the beach – see details and availability .

See our complete guide to Papagayo beaches .

OUR ADVICE FOR RENTING A CAR IN Lanzarote

  • Compare prices on our preferred platform: DiscoverCars – one of the best rated sites.
  • A small car is all you need.
  • But you can also choose a larger one if you wish, as the parking spaces are rather large.
  • Demand is high, so book early .

6. Fun at Aqualava water park

Aqualava water park - slides

If you want to refresh yourself in a different way, Aqualava is a water park that has the advantage of being open all year round. It highlights the volcanic character of the island. They even use a geothermal system to heat the pools. We liked the design of the park, which is not too big, which is nice for staying together as a family.

Aqualava water park - river

Here you’ll find..:

  • The Aqualava lagoon pool, which regularly becomes a wave pool
  • Timan Fire with 5 winding slides
  • The Magma River for float trips
  • Corsario Bay for the little ones with a giant octopus
  • Please note that many attractions are not accessible to children under 1m20.
  • Open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. in summer, and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. in winter

7. Go underwater: snorkeling or diving / Atlantico Museum

Museo Altantico

If you love discovering the seabed, Playa Blanca is a great destination. The beaches to the west of Playa Blanca: Playa Flamingo, Playa Montana Roja and Playa Natura Beach, offer great snorkeling opportunities. But Playa Blanca is best known for its underwater museum: Museo Atlantico. Lanzarote is a superb destination for divers.

Even if you’re a beginner, you can manage to see it with a professional diver. See details and availability – and book!

8. Hike to the summit of Montana Roja

Montana Roja

This volcano is located right next to the resort, but few people climb this mountain to enjoy the view! Overlooking Playa Blanca, Montana Roja (the red mountain, because of its color) is a volcanic crater that rises to 194 m. A beautiful walk takes you to the top and around the rim with superb views of the southern tip of Lanzarote. A beautiful walk takes you to the top and around the rim with superb views of the southern tip of Lanzarote. On a clear day, you can also enjoy views of Lobos Island and the north coast of Fuerteventura.

  • 1h15 round trip from the last houses (including 20min around the crater)
  • 2.6km walk – 150m ascent from Playa Blanca town

More photos and tips in our article on Montana Roja .

9. Enjoy the Canary Islands at Kamezi Deli & Bistro

Kamezi appetizer

After all that swimming and hiking, you deserve some good food. Playa Blanca has many restaurants, and some very good ones. But if you’re looking for a unique, gastronomic experience, we recommend the Kamezi Deli & Bistro. We loved our experience. To begin with, the setting is magnificent, with a décor that blends in perfectly with nature and the view. And then the discovery menu lets you sample local produce and traditional dishes revisited. We had some very nice surprises throughout the meal.

10. Visit the old town: beach, stores…

tourist office playa blanca lanzarote

In the center of town, you’ll find the oldest part. It doesn’t have the cachet of Teguise, but it’s a pleasant place to walk around. You’ll find it here:

  • the church: Parroquia Nuestra Señora del Carmen
  • pedestrian streets with lots of stores
  • The liveliest part of the promenade with a wide choice of restaurants
  • another small beach called Playa Blanca

tourist office playa blanca lanzarote

The beach in the center is called Playa Blanca, which gets complicated. It’s a small beach, not very long and not very wide. But it’s right next to stores and restaurants.

11. Seeking thrills on land or at sea: kayaking, quad biking, etc.

paddle in Playa Blanca

As one of Lanzarote’s main resorts, there’s plenty to do at Playa Blanca. You’ll find a wide choice of activities on the water. Note:

  • Kayaking to explore the coast – see availability and make a reservation
  • Paddleboarding for balance training – see availability and book now
  • Parasailing, an activity we love and which offers superb views – see availability and make a reservation
  • Jet-skiing, if you’re looking for speed – see availability and make a reservation

And on land, you can also go on an adventure. Note:

  • Quad biking tours in desert landscapes – see availability and make a reservation

12. Relax at Marina Rubicon

PLaya Blanca Marina Rubicon

On one side you have the old center, and on the other the Marina Rubicon. Here you’ll find a covered shopping mall, the marina, restaurants and bars with a very different atmosphere from the rest of the city.

There’s a market here on Wednesday and Saturday mornings.

13 à 16. See our favorite places around Playa Blanca

We all love the island of Lanzarote, but close to Playa Blanca, we particularly like 3 places.

13. Los Hervideros

Los Hervideros

One of our favorite landscapes on Lanzarote is Los Hervideros . We really enjoyed the mix of turquoise water, dark basalt columns and the little red volcano behind. We just sat there and watched, fascinated by the intensity of the colors. A path has been set up to explore these cliffs and even to go down and look under one of the arches. The walk is short but fun and easy.

  • Driving time from Playa Blanca = 20min
  • If you don’t want to drive, organized tours combine Los Hervideros with a visit to the famous Timanfaya National Park. See the program

14. Salt marshes (Salinas de Janubios)

Salinas de Janubios

We’ve always loved salt marshes: their shapes, colors and little cones of white salt. On the west coast of Lanzarote, you can find the Janubios Salinas. In this volcanic landscape, it’s quite a sight!

15. El Golfo and the green lake

tourist office playa blanca lanzarote

Off to Charco Verde , to see what’s left of the volcano by the sea, and the formation of the green lake at its center. There’s a mix of red, yellow and black rocks that have been beautifully shaped by erosion. What’s more, all this is combined with a black beach and a very well-located viewpoint. Lago Verde is green due to the combination of sea grass algae and sulfur.

16. Los Charcones natural pools

Los Charcones are a series of magnificent natural pools that appear at low tide. However, they are not easy to access. The road is unpaved and with very sharp rocks. So you’re taking a risk if you go by car. Alternatively, you can walk a few kilometers. Sorry, we don’t have any photos yet.

17 à 19. Excursions from Playa Blanca

Of course, you can explore the whole island of Lanzarote from Playa Blanca. But if you only have a few days, here are our favorite excursions.

17. Timanfaya National Park

Timanfaya National Park

It’s a must-see. Timanfaya National Park is the best excursion in Lanzarote. It’ s absolutely breathtaking! It’s a national park and you can’t walk around on your own. But even in a group, it’s fantastic to see the colors and power of the Earth.

Timanfaya National Park is located on the west coast of the island and consists entirely of volcanic soil. It is protected. Next to the restaurant, you can see the water projected from the Earth and touch the hot rocks. After that, you board a bus to visit the park on the unique route they’ve created. This route offers fantastic panoramas of the many volcanic craters (formed mainly between 1730 and 1736), different types of lava and incredible colors.

  • Driving time from Playa Blanca = 30min
  • If you don’t want to drive, there are group excursions combined with other Lanzarote attractions – see tours that include Timanfaya

18. Works by César Manrique

Cactus Garden

Lanzarote is also famous for being the home of the architect and artist César Manrique. Above all, he liked to integrate architecture with the natural environment. It’s thanks to him that there are no major developments on the island and that it retains so much charm with all its little white houses.

One of our favorite places of his was the cactus garden , but there’s also a foundation, his house, the viewpoint over La Graciosa (Mirador del Rio) and Jamaeos del Agua .

19. Lobos Island / Fuerteventura

Lobos Island

For a complete change, you can also head south by boat to explore the island of Lobos and/or the island of Fuerteventura. It’s so close and yet so different. The landscape is more mountainous and less volcanic. It has better beaches but not the same charm as Lanzarote. So it’s a great way to experience something different in the Canary Islands. Note that Fuerteventura is a larger island and you can only see a snapshot on a day trip from Lanzarote.

Playa Blanca

What to see and do in playa blanca.

In the south of Lanzarote is one of the unique and beautiful areas of the island, where they focus most of the tourist attractions, places of interest and must-see of your visit to Lanzarote with a wide and varied range of hotels: the town of Playa Blanca in the municipality of Yaiza : Its unique landscape with all these factors make it one of the areas with greater appeal to visitors to Lanzarote. Furthermore, it is the starting point for trips to the neighbouring island, Corralejo in the north of Fuerteventura , which takes only 25 minutes by ferry.

The growth of Playa Blanca as a tourist destination in Lanzarote has been increasing in recent years, and many experts predict that it will be the reference tourist area in Lanzarote in the medium to long term. One of the factors is that the highest temperatures on the island are registered in Playa Blanca, the care of its heritage is latent, and also the proximity to such outstanding points of interest on Lanzarote as Timanfaya National Park, El Golfo or Papagayo Beach among some others.

It's part of the municipality of Yaiza , but with a population of 12,960 in 2021 it has far outgrown that village.

The resort is named for the central white beach - Playa Blanca - in a 9-km wide bay on the south coast of Lanzarote. Playa Flamingo is the western beach within the bay and Playa Dorada the eastern. These are mostly sandy, and sheltered by volcanic hills from the Atlantic wind and waves, so they're good for swimming and sunbathing. They're backed by restaurants, retail and hotels (mostly low rise) and there's a ferry port and a leisure marina. What's called "Papagayo Beach" is a series of sandy coves 3 km southeast of town.

Map

Highway LZ-2 runs from Arrecife and the airport to Playa Blanca, about 40 km.

Bus 60 / 62 runs from Arrecife via Intercambiador, Playa Honda, Tías, Uga and Yaiza to Playa Blanca ferry pier, every 30 min M-F and hourly Saturday and Sunday.

Bus 161 runs from Arrecife Airport ( ACE   IATA ) T1 and T2 via Puerto del Carmen and Yaiza to the ferry pier. It costs €3.30 (Jan 2023) and runs M-F every 30 min, Saturday hourly and Sunday every 2 hours. On Sunday it might be quicker to take Bus 23 towards Arrecife and change at the Intercambiador west edge of the city for Bus 60 / 62.

28.8645 -13.8314 1 Estacion de Guaguas the bus station is a roof covered drop-off and bus parking lot with squalid toilets. Buses towards Puerto del Carmen, the airport and Arrecife stop across the road, on the northbound carriageway of Av de las Canarias.

28.8589 -13.8338 2 Playa Blanca Port is the landing point for Fred Olsen car ferries from Corralejo on Fuerteventura . These sail hourly and take 30 min, for a fare in 2023 of €32 per adult foot passenger, €45 per car plus driver.

Lineas Romero ferries compete on this route, sailing five times a day for €20 per adult, foot passengers only.

The central area is compact and walkable but the town sprawls 8 km east-west.

Playa Blanca has an e-scooter sharing system. You can take one anywhere and leave it anywhere in the designated area. The service is provided by Superpedestrian Link Scooters and can be used with their app. In 2023 it costs €1 to unlock then €0.30 per minute.

Bus 30 traverses town every 30 min, from Montaña Roja in the west via the ferry pier and Estación de Guaguas to Sandos Papagayo in the east. The fare in 2023 is €1.40, pay the driver in cash, they give change up to €10.

Taxis are readily available, but "Taxi" at the foot of Av de Papagayo is just a coffee shop.

  • 28.8556 -13.8725 1 Faro de Punta Pechiguera is the lighthouse at the tip of Lanzarote, a gaunt white cylinder alongside its low-set predecessor. The approach path is rough, and you only come for the view of Fuerteventura and the sunset.
  • 28.8698 -13.8561 2 Montaña Roja is the volcano looming west of town centre. You can hike to the crater rim and down into the caldera.
  • Marina Rubicón is the leisure boat harbour, surrounded by shops and restaurants. At night you can see the lights of Corralejo on Fuerteventura twinkling across the channel.
  • 28.8559 -13.8109 3 Castillo de San Marcial de Rubicón de Femés is a stubby tower east end of the marina, first built in 1742 to guard against pirates. There's no entry, but those naughty pirates ignored the sign and torched it.
  • 28.9149 -13.8473 4 Los Charcones are pools formed by the rocks. Some are dinky and you look for crabs, others are suitable for bathing in calm conditions, while others are exposed and the returning surf could sweep you out to sea. All of them are popular with sea urchins. In strong weather there are blowholes. Charcones are all along the west coast but this is the best group, reached by a 2 km dirt track past an abandoned hotel. This track is nowadays closed to vehicles.
  • The Spoon in Concrete is on the seafront, near Av Marítima 44. Yes, it's just a spoon set into the pavement surface, and your task is 1) to find it, and 2) contrive to get a thrill out of the quest and discovery.

  • Playa Flamingo west of the ferry port and Iberostar Hotel is sheltered by breakwaters so it's calm for kiddy-bathing. It's popular for shore-based diving: you head out over the sand to a drop-off. The "Blue Hole" is a short swim-through, entered at 26 m and you pop out at 18 m.

  • Playa de Colorados is east by Sandos Papagayo Resort: it's black lava, so you come here for water sports not beach lounging.
  • Museo Atlántico is an underwater sculpture park off Playa de Coloradas. The sculptures are in 12-14 m depth and are especially appreciated by nervous novice divers.
  • Playa Mujeres and Playa del Pozo are attractive sandy beaches a few km further southeast. You need transport to enjoy them: there's a €3 road toll.

There are so many great things to do in Playa Blanca, in Lanzarote, that I’m going back again in 2024! If you’re wondering what to do in Playa Blanca, I’ve narrowed down some of the best activities to make your holiday the best it can be…

what to do in playa blanca lanzarote

With its azure waters, pristine beaches, and laid-back vibe, this charming town is a paradise for travellers seeking a perfect blend of relaxation and adventure. Whether you’re a sun worshipper, an explorer, or a food enthusiast, Playa Blanca has something special in store for you. So, let’s dive in and discover the magic of this coastal gem.

About Playa Blanca, Lanzarote

Translating literally to ‘White Beach’, Playa Blanca is a picture-postcard beach town on the southern coast of Lanzarote. Although it’s one of the more popular tourist spots in the Canary Islands, Playa Blanca is known for its slower pace of life compared to clubbing hotspots like Playa Carmen.

activities in playa blanca, lanzarote

Wondering what to do in Playa Blanca town? Well, it’s a calm resort town, with plenty to see and do beyond simply sunbathe, rotate, repeat (although tempting). From watersports to shopping, and beach hopping to hiking, Playa Blanca has something for all ages and all types of travellers.

Playa Blanca is also a great base for exploring Lanzarote, with plenty of hotel options (including Lanzarote adults only hotels ) and day trips (see below) to be had. Discover your bucket list of things to do while in Playa Blanca here, as well as the best shops, trips and beaches.

History of Playa Blanca Town

Playa Blanca started as a small fishing village, serving as a port that connected Lanzarote with Fuerteventura. While it has seen significant development over the last few decades, transforming into a popular tourist destination, you’ll still find low-rise, whitewashed buildings and historic landmarks. It really is a blend of old and new, with dazzling, luxury yachts, a modern marina and international hotels and restaurants, mixed together with a fortress, volcanic craters and the old town.

what to do playa blanca

Situated on the southernmost tip of Lanzarote, Playa Blanca is at the easternmost of Spain’s Canary Islands, located off the coast of West Africa. The town extends around a natural bay, flanked by rugged mountains on one side and the Atlantic Ocean on the other, creating a natural shelter that keeps things warm and sunny almost year-round.

In December, the average temperature is 22°C, which is somewhat of a drastic change from 7°C here in the UK!

Another envious detail; Playa Blanca is characterised by so many stunning beaches. Nearby are the Papagayo beaches, which are secluded coves set against cliffs. They’re the kind of beaches you’d find on the front cover of travel brochures or computer desktop backgrounds. The town of Playa Blanca itself stretches around a natural bay, with a gently sloping landscape that offers breathtaking views of the sea, the neighbouring island of Fuerteventura, and the Isla de Lobos.

The Best Things to Do in Playa Blanca

Here are some things you can do in Playa Blanca …

1. Visit the Playa Blanca beaches

Ok I thought I’d get the obvious choice out there first. You can’t not spend a day (or week) at the beaches in Playa Blanca. They’re the perfect combination of (black) and golden sands, clear waters and stunning backdrops. Popular beaches close to Playa Blanca include Playa Dorada, Playa Flamingo, and Playa Blanca town itself.

Packing list for toddlers

The town is known for its pristine beaches, and there are several to choose from. Here are some of the top beaches in Playa Blanca:

Playa Dorada

Among the best and most popular beaches of Playa Blanca, is Playa Dorada. This is translated as ‘golden beach’ due to its extensive golden sandy stretch, which makes it perfect for soaking up the sun or beach sports.

The waters here are calm and shallow, offering an ideal environment for both confident swimmers and those just looking for a leisurely paddle. It’s a beach that truly ticks all the boxes for a day of sun, sea, and sand.

Playa Flamingo

Playa Flamingo is a stunning Playa Blanca beach with soft, golden sand and crystal-clear waters. But the beach isn’t just about natural beauty – you’re also well-catered for with a variety of amenities nearby.

Fancy a beach-side lunch or a refreshing cocktail?

You’ll find plenty of restaurants and bars just a short stroll away. Also useful if you have kids who get hungry or need somewhere to shelter from the sun every now and then.

Papagayo Beaches

A bit off the beaten path, the Papagayo Beaches are a series of secluded, unspoiled beaches that offer a more tranquil experience. Each beach is a small cove surrounded by natural beauty, making them ideal for those seeking a bit of peace and quiet. The waters here are as clear as you can imagine, providing a fantastic spot for snorkelling or simply enjoying the stunning undersea view.

These beaches are located just outside of Playa Blanca and are some of the most beautiful on the island. You can hike or bike to the beaches or take a water taxi from the Marina Rubicón. They’re located in Los Ajaches Natural Park, so you’ll get to see lots of natural beauty.

Speaking of natural beauty, you may spot some nudists too if you go to Caleta del Congrio, one of the Papagayo beaches.

Playa Blanca

A beach so stunning the town shares the same name; Playa Blanca is a small, sheltered cove providing a cosy and calm beach experience. With its gentle waters, it’s particularly family-friendly and great for families with young children looking to enjoy a safe day at the seaside. It’s the heart of the town and a place that carries the local vibe in every grain of sand.

Playa del Afre

Playa del Afre is a less frequented but equally spectacular beach in Playa Blanca. The beach offers impressive views of the coastline and the nearby island of Fuerteventura, providing a beautiful backdrop for a day at the beach. While it may not be as bustling as some of the other Playa Blanca beaches, its tranquillity and natural beauty make it well worth a visit. It’s the perfect spot for those seeking a bit of solitude and a connection with nature.

2. Stroll down Marina Rubicón

things to do in playa blanca

Marina Rubicón is home to many shops, restaurants, and cafes. You can take a stroll along the boardwalk, browse the shops, or enjoy a meal with a sea view. If you enjoy looking at all the fancy yachts too, this is the place you want to be.

Definitely one of the best things to do in Playa Blanca Lanzarote!

3. Take a boat trip

Speaking of yachts and boats, one of the best things to do in Playa Blanca is go on a boat trip. There’s lots of different boat trips from Marina Rubicón , including trips to the nearby island of Fuerteventura, dolphin and whale watching trips, and sunset cruises. They’re well worth it and pretty budget-friendly. For example, there are ferries from Playa Blanca to Fuerteventura for less than €20, or you could go to nearby island Lobos on a dolphin watching boat trip for around €65-70.

day trip to Fuertaventura

When I was there last I took a boat trip from Playa Blanca Lanzarote port to the port in Corralejo, on Fuertaventura. I did this Lanzarote day trip with GetYourGuide, but I’d actually recommend you do it independently as the transfer time to the port was RIDICULOUS! We jumped in a taxi on the way back as it was so awful (over an hour for a 5-minute journey!)

boat trip from playa blanca

I loved Fuerteventura though, and would love to do a holiday there one day. The impressive landscapes and beautiful coastline were just incredible. Visit the Corralejo Dunes Natural Park, a sprawling expanse of sand dunes that stretch to the sea. The island is also known for its goat cheese, or queso majorero. Don’t miss the opportunity to try this local delicacy and learn about its making process.

what to do from Playa Blanca

We saw the dunes, chilled at a beach bar, and hung around on the seafront.

It was wonderful!

4. Explore the Timanfaya National Park

One of the things you must do – especially if you’ve rented a car – is visit Timanfaya National Park. The volcanic park is located about a 30-minute drive from Playa Blanca, and features one active volcano, Timanfaya.

At the park, there’s plenty of things to do like walking the volcanic trail, go on a camel ride, visit the fire mountains and much more. Prices are currently €12 for adults and €6 for children (aged between 7 and 12). This is one of the top Playa Blanca activities to do while you’re in Lanzarote.

5. Visit the underwater museum Museo Atlántico

Lanzarote has some of the best scuba diving spots in the world, and Playa Blanca is no exception. You can take a diving trip and explore the underwater world and fantastic marine life. But one of the best activities unique to Playa Blanca is Museo Atlántico; a famous dive spot with sculpture. It’s within Lanzarote’s UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve.

Alternatively, go diving in Montana Amarilla, another fantastic and equally captivating dive spot in Playa Blanca.

6. Learn about pirates at the Castillo de las Coloradas

This 18th-century fortress Castillo de las Coloradas stands tall against the stunning backdrop of the Atlantic Ocean. Here you’ll get to see breathtaking views of the surrounding coastline, making it a great shot if you love photography. Within Castillo de las Coloradas, you’ll find ancient cannons and discover the island’s history of thwarting pirate attacks.

This is a great thing to do in Playa Blanca if you’re with the family, and you can finish the day by strolling along the nearby beach of Colorades to top it all off.

7. Hike mountains, coasts or volcanos

There are several hiking trails in the area, which takes you to the top of a volcanic mountain for stunning views of the coastline. One popular trail is the Montaña Roja hike, which takes you to the summit of the iconic Red Mountain. The trail provides panoramic views of the coast and neighbouring islands, and takes about an hour to complete.

what to see in playa blanca

Another option is the Los Ajaches Natural Park trail. This ancient volcanic range offers various routes of varying difficulties, so you can choose one suitable to your level (or just what you’re in the mood for that day). This trail winds through rocky terrain, hidden beaches, and offers breathtaking vistas of the Atlantic Ocean.

If you’re up for a longer trek, the Lanzarote GR 131 trail provides an opportunity to cross the entire island. Starting from the northernmost point of Lanzarote, the trail winds its way through diverse terrains, volcanic landscapes, and charming villages, offering a comprehensive exploration of the island’s beauty. This is quite obviously one for more advanced hikers.

8. Sip wine at Bodega Rubicón

Pay a visit to Bodega Rubicón, a charming winery nestled in the heart of Lanzarote’s wine region. It’s about a 20-minute drive from Playa Blanca town, so definitely doable.

Take a guided tour of the vineyards and learn about the unique cultivation techniques used on the island’s volcanic soil. You’ll get to sample Lanzarote’s best wines in tasting sessions, and most likely buy a bottle to take back afterwards. This is one of the best Playa Blanca attractions for any bon viveurs!

9. Feast on the local cuisine

eating in playa blanca

Playa Blanca is home to many fantastic restaurants serving traditional Canarian dishes such as papas arrugadas, fresh fish, and mojo sauce. Don’t forget to try some of the local wines as well if you’ve not filled your cup (or wine glass) at the Bodega Rubicón.

If you’re looking for things to do in Playa Blanca at night, eating is the obvious choice!

10. Shopping in Playa Blanca

Fancy a bit of retail therapy in Playa Blanca? Well, you’re in for a treat! This place is a shopping paradise, full to the brim with charming boutiques and swanky shops selling everything from souvenirs and designer clobber to sparkling jewels and the latest gadgets.

Right, where should you start shopping in Playa Blanca?

where to shop in Playa blanca

Get yourself over to Centro Comercial Papagayo. This big shopping centre has everything you could possibly need. From a jam-packed supermarket and a handy pharmacy to a swarm of fashion outlets and souvenir shops, you’ll find it hard to leave empty-handed.

Fancy a stroll? Take a wander down Avenida de Canarias. It’s the heart of Playa Blanca, with shops, cafes, and restaurants galore! From snazzy beachwear to unique handicrafts, there’s something for everyone.

Don’t forget to explore the charming old town streets too! Calle Limones is a lively pedestrian street known for its chic boutique shops, buzzing bars, and fantastic restaurants. And just around the corner is Calle Correillo, where you’ll find an array of quirky shops, from souvenir spots to glitzy jewellery stores and trendy fashion boutiques.

Playa Blanca is a great place to go shopping if you know where – whether you’re a bargain hunter or a luxury lover. With so many shopping options, you’re bound to find whatever you’re looking for without spending a fortune too!

11. Do a day trip from Playa Blanca

Although you’ll find plenty of things to do in Playa Blanca, it’s sometimes nice to explore a bit. From island hopping to natural beauty spots to clubbing cities, here are 5 great day trips you can do from Playa Blanca!

fuertaventura from Playa Blanca

La Graciosa Island

La Graciosa, located north of Lanzarote, is the smallest inhabited island in the Canary Archipelago. With a ferry trip of approximately half an hour from Órzola in Lanzarote, it’s an easy and scenic escape from the busier parts of Lanzarote. This tiny paradise is car-free, contributing to a laid-back, leisurely ambience. The island’s sandy streets lead to serene beaches such as Playa de las Conchas and Playa La Cocina, known for their tranquil beauty and crystal-clear waters. Engage in a spot of snorkelling, hiking, or simply basking in the sun.

Puerto del Carmen

This bustling resort town is just a short drive from Playa Blanca Lanzarote and is perfect for those looking for a lively atmosphere. The town boasts a beautiful beachfront promenade lined with shops, restaurants, and bars, making it a popular spot for both day-trippers and night owls. Don’t miss the Old Town harbour, where you can enjoy traditional seafood dishes as you admire the local fishing boats. For a more immersive experience, the Rancho Texas Lanzarote Park offers wildlife encounters and pool areas for families.

Lobos Island

A mere 2km channel separates Fuerteventura from the untouched Lobos Island, a small islet declared a nature reserve. Visitors can take a ferry from Corralejo in Fuerteventura, with the journey taking around fifteen minutes. The island is a haven for birdwatchers, home to over 130 species of birds. The walking trails offer spectacular views, with the island’s lighthouse, Faro de Lobos, being a popular destination. The pristine beaches of Playa de la Concha and Playa de las Lapas provide perfect spots for snorkelling and swimming.

Cueva de los Verdes (Green Caves)

A journey to the centre of the earth might not be possible, but a trip to Cueva de los Verdes is the next best thing. A half-hour drive from Playa Blanca, these spectacular caves were formed around 3,000 years ago by a volcanic eruption. The guided tour will lead you through a fascinating underground world, with incredible formations and an eerie lake. The cave’s natural acoustics have been put to good use, with concerts occasionally held inside, providing a truly unique musical experience.

Getting to and around Playa Blanca

It’s easy to get around the Playa Blanca attractions – taxis are easy to hail, simple to use, and cheap too.

Airport Transfers

Playa Blanca is about 35km from Lanzarote Airport (ACE). Various airport transfer services are available, including shuttles, private cars, and taxis. A pre-booked shuttle bus service costs around €10-€20 per person and takes about 45 minutes, so they say, but took us at the Hotel Gran Castillo Tagoro in Playa Blanca over an hour and a half (it was awful!).

bus on the way from Lanzarote airport

Private transfer services are a bit pricier at around €40-€50 for a four-seater car, but they offer the advantage of avoiding waiting time at the airport (totally worth it, this is how we came back). Taxis from the airport to Playa Blanca cost around €50-€60 and typically take 30-40 minutes.

Taxis are a convenient option for getting around Playa Blanca, especially for shorter distances. The initial fare is around €3, with an additional cost of about €1 per kilometre travelled. Taxis are usually metered, and most drivers speak English, making it a relatively easy mode of transport.

how to travel playa blanca

Local Buses

Playa Blanca has a decent local bus service, which connects to other areas like Puerto del Carmen and Arrecife. The bus fare is approximately €2-€4 per trip, depending on the distance. Though buses are the most economical option, the service might not be as frequent or as punctual as in larger cities. A timetable can be found at the local tourist information offices or online.

Hiring a car is a good option if you’re planning to explore Lanzarote beyond Playa Blanca. A compact car typically costs around €20-€30 per day, including insurance. Remember that you need to have a valid driving licence.

where to hire a car in playa blanca

Car hire companies often offer the convenience of picking up and dropping off the car at the airport. But keep in mind that parking in Playa Blanca can be challenging during peak season, so it’s always handy if your accommodation has allocated parking.

There’s a ferry service from Playa Blanca to the nearby island of Fuerteventura, with several crossings per day. The journey takes around 30 minutes, and a return ticket costs about €40 for an adult. It’s a convenient way to explore another Canary Island if you have the time. This was one of my favourite Playa Blanca things to do when I visited.

Finally, Playa Blanca itself is quite compact, and many of the attractions are within walking distance from each other. The seafront promenade stretches along the coastline and provides a pleasant walk with views over the sea, beaches, and shops. Walking is free, environmentally friendly, and often the best way to discover hidden gems in the town.

Things to do in Playa Blanca

Playa Blanca in Lanzarote is more than just a pretty beach town; it’s a treasure trove of hidden gems. So, whether you’re indulging in mouthwatering seafood at that secret local haunt, finding the best spots for sunset views, or navigating the charming backstreets, you’re in for a real treat.

what to do playa blanca

So go ahead, savour the local flavours, soak up the sunshine, and dive into the rich culture of this coastal paradise.

Enjoy your Playa Blanca escapade!

Both the jet ski rentals and excursions take place/begin in Playa Blanca.

3. Relax At Papagayo Beach

One of Lanzarote’s highlights is Papagayo, a beautiful set of three beaches nestled in their own coves.

Each of the golden beaches is protected by cliffs that protrude out into the sea resulting. This protection allows the beaches to be calm and swimmable.

To be honest, I didn’t see too many beaches that were like this on Lanzarote until I reached Playa Blanca. Sure, I had heard about beaches in Tenerife , but nothing on this island.

Yet, this area is so jaw-dropping that it has been declared a nature reserve and to enter, you will need to pay a small fee.

Getting to the beaches can be somewhat difficult but if you have rented your own car, you can drive to the beaches (however it is important to clarify if this is allowed with YOUR rental car as there are some stories out there that rental companies fine you if you take their cars to Papagayo).

12 Things to Do in Playa Blanca, Lanzarote's Newest Resort Town

The other practical way to get to the beaches is by boat, with water taxis available from Marina Rubicon or the Old Harbor departing four times a day to Papagayo.

You can also take a dedicated tour to Papagayo Beaches , where you can enjoy time on a luxury boat and swim in the waters of one of the beautiful beaches.

Alternatively, you can walk to the beaches with the walk taking just over an hour, along the way you will encounter some of Lanzarote’s most desirable nature.

4. Wander Through the Street Market at Marina Rubicon

On Wednesdays and Saturdays between 9am-2pm, there is a wonderful local market at Marina Rubicon, specializing in locally-produced and crafted products.

As you peruse the vast array of stalls that have been set up in harborside, you will be able to find fantastic little products from wines to fun trinkets.

It is one of the best places to get local souvenirs and support local craftspeople.

Surrounding the market are plenty of small bars and restaurants where you can enjoy a bite to eat or a quick drink to escape the sun that beats down on the idyllic marina.

5. Go Parasailing in Playa Blanca

See the azure water from a new perspective: gliding above it! With this thrilling parasailing activity , you can fly over the sea at a height of either 50m or 100m.

Choose from either sailing at Puerto del Carmen or Playa Blanca.

Whichever spot you pick, you will be rewarded with spectacular views of the sea and the unique volcanic landscape of the island.

Parasailing in Playa Blanca

You can choose a flight to fit singles, doubles, or triples, so you can bring along your friends to share in this exhilarating experience.

There is also an option to just ride on the boat if anyone in your party does not want to participate in the parasailing part.

>> Click here to check parasailing rates and availability

6. Take a Day Trip to Fuerteventura

As you look out over the sea, on the horizon you will see the volcanoes of Fuerteventura rise out of the ocean. With just under 10 miles between the two islands, Fuerteventura and the town of Corralejo makes the perfect day trip from Playa Blanca.

12 Things to Do in Playa Blanca, Lanzarote's Newest Resort Town

Corralejo is a cool, hippie-like town that has a completely different vibe to Playa Blanca and Lanzarote as a whole.

With surf shops lining the main shopping street, you quickly realize just how important surfing is to the area, with the northern beaches on Fuerteventura being some of the best surfing spots in the Canary Islands.

Along with the surf shops, there is an abundance of nice restaurants and hip bars, and each has its own unique vibe.

If you are wanting to do a little more than just explore Corralejo, you can take an organized tour  where you will visit both the town and the surrounding nature .

To book your ferry to Fuerteventura from Playa Blanca, click here .

7. Explore Isla de Lobos

Just off of Fuerteventura’s northern coast and 14km south of Playa Blanca is the rugged island of Isla de Lobos, a nature reserve crammed full of epic landscapes.

There are limits to how many people can visit the island, with a daily limit of 400 people split into two four-hour sessions of 200 people one in the morning and one in the afternoon.

12 Things to Do in Playa Blanca, Lanzarote's Newest Resort Town

The island is home to over 100 different types of plant species and rare sea birds that use the cliffs that edge the island to nest during the breeding seasons.

The waters around the island are also home to a vast array of marine life such as barracudas and hammerhead sharks.

Isla de Lobos has plenty of hiking trails that wind their way through the island and in the north, you will find a 19th-century lighthouse, as well as a large volcano where you can hike to the top for the best views of the island.

If you are not wanting to hike, the island is also home to some fantastic beaches where you can spend your four hours relaxing on a secluded beach.

Lobos Island is one of the best excursions from Corralejo and anywhere from Lanzarote both!

Getting to Isla de Lobos from Playa Blanca

From Playa Blanca, there are two ways you can reach the island: either planning a trip on your own or taking an organized tour.

If you plan to go independently, you will need to book a ferry crossing to Fuerteventura and from there you will need to take the 10-minute boat ride to Isla de Lobos, which will also need to be booked in advance choosing either the morning or afternoon session .

12 Things to Do in Playa Blanca, Lanzarote's Newest Resort Town

Three days prior to your trip, you will need to register to enter Isla de Lobos with the government. Ferries to and from both islands are pretty common, so I recommend waiting to book boat tickets until you have confirmed your access to the island.

Alternatively, you can take an organized tour that couples dolphin spotting and two hours on the island in one trip. This is a great way to explore the island in a more hassle-free way.

8. Walk to Pechiguera Lighthouse

To the west of Playa Blanca is one of the island’s tallest lighthouses, standing at 50m tall.

Pechiguera Lighthouse was originally built in 1866 and was only 10m tall, however, it remained in use for over 100 hundred years until it was replaced by the current lighthouse.

The cool thing about this lighthouse is that you can see the new and the old one side by side as they kept the old one in its place. It has since been deemed a place of cultural heritage by the government.

12 Things to Do in Playa Blanca, Lanzarote's Newest Resort Town

Reaching the lighthouse is a nice walk that takes you along the semi-rugged southern Lanzarote coast.

A mostly-paved walkway stretches all the way along the coast from Playa Blanca to the lighthouse, with the walk lasting around 1 hour and 15 minutes.

It is also possible to bike the promenade and complete the journey quicker than on foot, although you may find that the walkway is busy with people walking.

This is one of the best things to do in Lanzarote if you’re wanting to get out of the center and away from the businesses.

9. Dive the Underwater Museum

This is your chance to visit one of the most unique museums in the world: an underwater museum accessible by scuba diving!

This full-day diving activity first walks you through equipment orientation, safety procedures, and actual diving instructions before you head out to the bay next to the Rubicon Dive Center, where you’ll get into the water.

Once you feel comfortable your instructor will guide you in a short dive in the bay.

Underwater museum in Playa Blanca

You’ll then take a lunch break and afterward head to the underwater museum for an exciting afternoon dive.

At the end of the excursion, you will receive an SSI Basic Diver certification, which is valid for 6 months.

This excursion is a fun way to learn a new skill, see the incredible museum exhibits, and explore the fascinating world under the surface.

10. Visit Castillo de las Coloradas

To the east of Playa Blanca, just past Marina Rubicon, there is a small defensive fortification that sits on top of a peninsula that juts out and offers fantastic views over the sea and along the cliffs.

12 Things to Do in Playa Blanca, Lanzarote's Newest Resort Town

Easily walkable from the center of Playa Blanca, the castle is interesting but there is not too much there… at first glance.

However, the magic lies behind the castle where you can walk out onto a rock formation and look at the fantastic cliffs that have formed over time with different layers of rock, each a different color.

Below the castle, the waves come rushing in breaking against the rocks, making an almighty noise. Looking out east, you can see the fantastic Papagayo Beaches that stretch along the coast with their individual coves.

The fort was built in the 18th century to defend the coast from the incessant, barbaric pirate attacks from North Africa.

11. Stroll the Playa Blanca Beachfront

Playa Blanca stretches along the southern coast of Lanzarote for pretty much 5 and a half miles.

Along this coastline is a pedestrian walkway that connects all of the beaches, bars, and coastal resort hotels- only breaking where the port intersects.

This promenade is perfect for strolling or riding a bike along as you occasionally stop for ice cream or a drink in one of the many establishments that line the walkway.

As the pathway is free from car traffic, moving from beach to beach is quick and makes it easy to find a beach with some space as they start to fill up during the day.

12 Things to Do in Playa Blanca, Lanzarote's Newest Resort Town

Alternatively, the walkway provides a direct route to the lighthouse and castle on either end, two of Playa Blanca’s most famous sites.

The path is bikeable but in the main parts of the town, you might find that the route is more congested with foot traffic and bars that sprawl out onto the walkway.

12. Watch the Sunset from Mirador en Playa Flamingo

Since Playa Blanca is located on the southern tip of Lanzarote, you have the opportunity to see fantastic sunrises to the east and sunsets to the west.

Sunsets on the island happen to be fairly spectacular as the sun lowers into the Atlantic Ocean.

Unlike northern Europe, the sunset time stays fairly standard throughout the year, with there being an under-4-hour difference between the lengths of the shortest and longest days of the year.

12 Things to Do in Playa Blanca, Lanzarote's Newest Resort Town

To the west of central Playa Blanca and past the port is Playa Flamingo, a lovely sheltered beach with high cliffs to one side.

At the top of these cliffs, you will find Mirador en Playa Flamingo, a vantage point to watch the sunset.

High above the sea, you will be able to watch sailing boats gently glide past the setting sun as the sea reflects a warm orange glow from the sun as the heat of the day starts to dwindle.

The area is peaceful and there are plenty of spots to sit down and watch the magic unfold. At the base of the cliffs, you may find people fishing off the rocks, creating beautiful silhouettes against the orange sky.

Additionally, there is a small fortification in the area and some railings where people have placed love locks during their trips.

13. Eat Dinner at La Chalanita

There are plenty of places to eat along the seafront in Playa Blanca, but few meet the standards set by La Chalanita.

The fantastic restaurant has epic views out over the sea and is located on the first floor and away from the crowds below. They specialize in traditional Spanish food that is served in large portions with a lot of flair.

12 Things to Do in Playa Blanca, Lanzarote's Newest Resort Town

The whole menu looked delicious, but I opted for the paella (which you need a minimum of two people for) as I had a craving for rice.

I went a little off the menu with my order and asked for the dish with fish and shellfish only and not a mixture of meat and fish.

It was absolutely delicious and worth the wait for the paella. This is definitely one of the best restaurants in Playa Blanca if you’re craving Spanish food.

14. Have Lunch or a Drink at Puerto Blanca

There are plenty of seaside bars and restaurants that line the beachfront in Playa Blanca, all offering up pretty much the same menu and drinks.

However, the thing that sets Puerto Blanca out from the rest was the lovely decor, friendly staff, and free wifi.

I’ll be honest, the food wasn’t anything to write home about, but the menu is a crowd-pleaser and will satisfy large groups as the menu is extensive.

At the front of the restaurant is an outdoor seating area where you can sit and watch the waves crash against the seafront and people watch as tourists stroll along the promenade.

I recommend heading there during lunchtime where you can grab a table fairly easily and set up for the day and enjoy a few cocktails in the year-round sunshine.

12 Things to Do in Playa Blanca, Lanzarote's Newest Resort Town

15. Hike to the Top of Montana Roja

Rising up on the western edge of Playa Blanca is Montana Roja. The majestic volcano provides amazing views over the resort and the surrounding nature.

The hike to the top takes around 40 minutes for those of relatively good fitness (i.e. not me).

If you are not in the best of shape or not so confident, it is best to take it slow as the incline is quite steep and during the summer months, there is little shade because of the lack of trees on the island.

Be sure to take plenty of water and wear appropriate clothing.

From the top, you can walk around the crater and enjoy uninhibited views of the southern tip of the island.

One of the best times to hike to the top of the volcano is just before sunrise when the air is cool and you can witness the sun rise out of the ocean.

Playa Blanca is located on the far southern tip of the island and is about 24 miles south of the island’s capital and airport in Arrecife .

You will need to reach Playa Blanca by road traveling down one of the island’s superb highways (seriously… the roads on Lanzarote are immaculate).

Depending on your plans, renting a car in the Lanzarote is a great way to get around the islands, which can easily be navigated as there are just a couple of centralized highways that go from north to south.

The drive from Arrecife to Playa Blanca is beautiful as you pass through the volcanoes and some of the country’s rawest landscapes.

The benefit of driving in Lanzarote is that you can stop off along the way and take in the scenery which the other options do not allow you to do.

The drive will take around 36 minutes without any stops, and the island tends not to suffer from traffic jams since there are not that many people living there.

Once you arrive in Playa Blanca, you will need to navigate yourself around the streets of the resort which shouldn’t be too difficult.

Airport Transfer to Playa Blanca

If you are not planning to drive a car on Lanzarote, the best hassle-free way to get to Playa Blanca is to order an airport transfer service.

Your assigned driver will track your flight to ensure all is fine and there are no delays, timing their arrival perfectly so you do not need to panic if your flight has been delayed for hours.

Once you exit the baggage claim, they should be waiting for you, holding a sign with your name on it. They will then take you to the agreed location stated when booking the transfer.

There are numerous ways to book a transfer, and some of them are better than others.

I recommend booking this airport transfer service. The price will be around €72 euros to Playa Blanca but is well worth it for peace of mind.

Taxi to Playa Blanca

From the airport, you can also take a taxi which is slightly cheaper than a private transfer, costing about €45.

There are often no taxis available at the airport or ones that will be willing to take you all the way to the south of the island as they cannot be guaranteed to be able to secure a return fare back to the Arrecife area.

There are two taxi ranks- one outside the arrival halls of each terminal. It is imperative that you take a taxi from there as other services offered may be illegitimate taxis and you at risk of being scammed.

Bus to Playa Blanca

If you are traveling to Lanzarote on a strict budget, the cheapest way to reach Playa Blanca is via the public bus network.

Bus line number 61 runs from the airport, stopping outside of both terminals one and two, departing hourly on the weekdays with a slightly reduced service on weekends and public holidays.

The journey takes around 1 hour and 15 minutes and costs just over €3. There are also several bus routes that depart from Arrecife bus station, which is the transfer hub for the island.

Almost all buses on Lanzarote connect with or go through Arrecife.

Ferry to Playa Blanca from Fuerteventura

If you are planning to visit Playa Blanca from Fuerteventura, you will need to take a boat from Fuerteventura’s northern coast. Regular ferries depart from Corralejo to Playa Blanca and the journey takes merely 30 minutes.

12 Things to Do in Playa Blanca, Lanzarote's Newest Resort Town

Both ports are located in the heart of their respective towns and can be easily reached. You will need to book tickets in advance to secure a cheaper deal as those bought just before traveling will be more expensive.

The boat ride is very bumpy; I did the journey during calm weather and you could really feel the boat rocking from side to side.

If you are planning to take this journey and are prone to seasickness, I can’t recommend purchasing some seasickness bands enough.

There are no direct flights between the islands given how close they are, so you will have to go via boat. If you have a car with you, there are car ferries available in addition to the passenger-only boats.

Playa Blanca is a very walkable city and there are sidewalks pretty much everywhere, along with some pedestrian zones such as the seafront.

Alternatively, there are heaps of places offering bikes for rent which is another great way to get around the resort, especially if you are staying close to the outskirts.

Playa Blanca was also the first town on Lanzarote to have its own dedicated bus service that does a loop of the town on a regular basis.

Bus number 30 does a general loop of the resort, stopping at all the main spots and costs around €1.30 for a ticket regardless of how far you are taking it.

Thanks for this. As someone who’s not visited the island before and potentially visiting the resort in May, this gave me a good overview and starting point. Will do some further reading. Looking forward to Geoff publishing his ‘Geoff’s Culinary Guide to Playa Blanca’ blog article so we all know what restaurants he likes :p

I don’t actually think you know Playa Blanca very well. There are many excellent restaurants in the resort that are equally as good as the one you mentioned

LOL no one said I was an expert or local to Playa Blanca. I don’t doubt that there are super amazing restaurants beyond what I visited. But, I included the ones I enjoyed. You are always free to drop your tips here too ;)

Playa Blanca

Publicado/Actualizado en January, 2018

The small fishing town of Playa Blanca has been transformed into Lanzarote’s flagship tourist destination. These five miles of lush coast are home to the island’s most modern selection of lodging options, mostly four and five-star hotels. Lanzarote’s most recently developed tourist area, Playa Blanca boasts a magnificent climate. In addition, incredible views of the neighbouring islands of Fuerteventura and Lobos are a truly special attraction.

View of Lobos Island from Playa Blanca, Lanzarote

A wide, pleasant seaside promenade winds along the length of the shoreline. All around the Playa Blanca avenue you’ll find innumerable opportunities for relaxation, shopping, recreation and a generous culinary offering, based on local fish and seafood. Just outside Playa Blanca you’ll come across the majestic beaches of Papagayo , a natural protected area within the borders of Los Ajaches Natural Monument, worth exploring once and again. These splendid beaches and coves are made more attractive and relaxing by their distinct natural beauty.

Towards the western edge of this area you’ll find the Playa Blanca port, a spot of vital importance to the island’s commercial and tourist link with nearby Fuerteventura. On the outskirts tourist facilities begins to mix with residential developments. These modern and unique developments expand along the coast up to the urban limit, symbolized by the Pechiguera lighthouse, a cultural hotspot which today remains somewhat abandoned. One spot which is of note for the seeker of sun and sand is Los Charcones . This site features a series of natural pools along the northwestern face of Playa Blanca. Just as on Papagayo’s beaches, a dip in these natural pools will transport you to an overwhelming state of tranquillity.

Playa Blanca’s long-held fishing traditions have their reward in the restaurants of the area. Aromas Yaiza, Casa Pedro, Museo de la Sal, La cocina de Colacho and Brisa Marina all stand out for their culinary offering. Puerto Deportivo Marina Rubicón tacks on another culinary option, Casa Maño. This recreational facility offers a host of leisure activities, featuring bowling alleys, tennis and paddle tennis courts, and countless pleasant terraces, such as Café del Mar. The area’s nightlife radiates out from the marina’s surroundings. The club Jungle’s and the spectacular terrace of Marea are our top recommendations.

Playa Blanca

Originally a sandy-floored south-coast fishing village, happily gazing out on neighbouring Fuerteventura, Playa Blanca has become almost unrecognisable in the past decade. Though still the quieter, smaller, more upmarket cousin of Puerto del Carmen, Lanzarote's southernmost (and sunniest) resort's sprawl of dive schools, cafes, restaurants, hotels and apartment complexes – albeit largely low-rise ones – now stretches almost to the tip of the Papagayo nature reserve. The activity-packed resort has a fairly upscale feel, especially around the swish Marina Rubicón at the eastern end of town, and the seafront promenade is a pleasant spot, as is pale-blonde Playa Blanca itself, though for many there's something undeniably soulless about the whole place. You'll find a hint of local character around the church, where the original fishing village began.
