Lite, relaxed fit, good braking, handling/stiffness, good grips

The groupset (Shimano 105), ability to upgrade at purchase

I am 63 y/o and a fit rider. I like the FX 7.9 because it is lite and comfortable and comes to me instead of going to it. I have a shoulder injury and pressure from a drop bar is not an option. I wish that it had a better group set instead of the Shimano 105. The gear changes are stiff. Even my Trek DS 8.4 has better shifting. For the money I think that this bike is a great value, but I will be looking for an upgrade on the shifting. The frame does what it says, no doubt. The seat sucks, but that is nitpicking and we all have a few saddles laying around. You can read the specs on the frame, so I won't go into it here. I just believe that this is a great bike to consider if you are like me and like some speed, but a relaxed fit. It's a wicked good price for what you get!

fast, comfortable, stable, gear shift fast and solid

on mine none yet. My wife got the 17 inch WSD 7.9 FX (which is not on their website or paper catalogue)and has found the flat bar a bit long by about 1-1.5 inches. This can be end cut so that can be solved. The other issue is on the WSD the top tube is dropped and doesn't leave enough room for a full sized water bottle to fit between the top and bottom tubes

My wife and I are avid recreational riders. We enjoy riding city and rural trails & roads. Our rides are from 1 - 4hrs usually. We like the hybrid style bikes and have replaced good but non carbon fiber bikes. We looked at carbon road bikes but disliked the drop bar and lack of pannier rack mounts. So we found the 2010 Trek 7.9 FX. If you you like a hybrid style bike and want light weight and performance and you can afford it BUY this bike. From the first ride we found the 7.9 FX to be light fast and good off road on crushed limestone trails and even a loose surface within reason

light, strong, great visibility, and you can go miles and miles with great enjoyment. A fifty miler once a week and 33 miles each day has been possible without wheel or tire problems. the Aero bars are very helpful and the wheels have been great in holding up.

Needs to have better grips on the bar. I upgraded to Bontrager Satellite plus with the big palm support and it really is great. Ended any wrist problems. Tires are good and after I added a set of tuffy strips I can wear out a rear tire in 2500 to 3000 miles without a flat.

I have ridden 11,000 miles in one year on this bike. I have worn out parts and replaced them through the LBS with no problem. Warrenty has been excellent on some parts that failed, but this was only two things. When I wear this one out I will buy another one. so much better than a road bike.

Trek 7.9FX review

Super-comfortable carbon mile-eater

Robert Smith

Dave Atkinson

trek 7.9 fx review

The Trek 7.9FX is the full-carbon, money-no-object option among flat-bar road bikes. It's an expensive, lightweight, super comfortable mile eater. You can ride it in town, but riding it between towns is more fun.

Ride & handling: super comfort but strange bar

The Trek 7.9FX is a luxury grand tourer among flat bar road bikes. I just can’t stress enough how comfortable this bike is. You could commute on it, but you’re really doing it a disservice by riding it for less than 20 miles; the real quality of this bike is its mile-eating capabilities.

The surprisingly short top-tube and wide bars don’t feel like they’re set up for big ride comfort, but the compliant frame and fork (and bars) and the excellent wheels will have you wondering where the ride went.

The bars are silly-wide though and that affects the ride adversely. The Spinaci-type extensions do give a useful second handhold, but the cons outweigh the pros here. To fit them in, the bars have grown to a huge 25 inches, much too wide for a sporty bike such as this.

You can’t cut them down, and what’s worse is that even then there isn’t enough room for decent wide grips, the upshot being that the paddles of the SLR770 10-speed shifters rub on your thumbs the whole time. You need the second hand position just for some respite.

It’s not really built for load carrying, and in town it’s personable without excelling; you won’t have the fun you would on the Cinelli Hoy Hoy Rats, and you won’t feel as safe as you would on the Cube Hooper.

If Trek specced a decent carbon flat bar instead of the interesting-but-flawed aero set-up – the riding position is too upright to get much advantage anyway – then it would be a better and faster bike.

As it stands, it’s a great choice if you have a long commute and plenty of riding time at the weekends. The extra cash over most flat-bar bikes certainly buys you a better bike – whether it’s the kind of bike you need is another matter.

Frame: beautiful but sensible

The 7.9FX's frame is beautiful. The full monocoque carbon construction features an organic curved down tube and thin stays that meet at a massively oversized bottom bracket shell. The down tube and triangular top tube both feature internal cable routing.

At 3.1lb it’s a very sensible weight for an urban bike frame, though I’m sure Trek could have made it lighter. The fork is light too, but again it’s a very sensibly specced 687g Bontrager rather than a more exotic and fragile unit.

For a large bike, the top tube is quite short. The cross weave carbon finish and reserved decals complete the classy look. Mudguard, rack and two bottle bosses are included.

Equipment: good news

Other than the bars, which we've already dealt with, it’s good news. The 105/Ultegra 10-speed transmission is slick and sexy, the thumb shifters excellent when they’re not wearing holes in your thumbs.

The Shimano Deore V brakes feature cartridge pads and are a vast improvement over the cheaper units on some other round-town bikes. I expected a better saddle than the rather generic Bontrager specced, but it’s comfortable enough.

Wheels: quick & racy

The Trek has real race wheels, the same Bontrager Race units that you’ll find on the £1900 Madone 5.1 road bike. They’re well built, light, and quick. You wouldn’t want to tour on them, though, and Trek has sensibly specced Bontrager 700x28c tyres to take some of the sting out of uneven surfaces.

The wheels and tyres have proved themselves to be very capable in town, as well as coping with some rough and muddy back lane excursions. They’re not the stiffest, with some brake rub evident out of the saddle, but the speed of acceleration in traffic more than makes up for that.

At a glance

Across town or ushering you through a charity ride, Trek’s 7.9 FX takes you there with comfort and speed. Its 500 Series Carbon frame is super light, strong and responsive, so you can sprint up to speed and cruise the hills. All that speed is ultra comfortable though. You’ll ride longer with the IsoZone elastomer-equipped rear end and carbon Bontrager fork that cancel out road chatter for an ultra-smooth ride. Plus, the bike’s precision 22-speed Shimano drivetrain conquers hills both up and down, while the powerful dual-pivot brakes provide top-notch stopping power. And, you can’t beat the full host of Bontrager components including a vibration-damping carbon seatpost.

Trek 7.9 FX good for riding on paved mountain roads?

  • Add to quote

Hello Members, I am new to the forum, and this seems to be an active community. I had a question on Trek 7.9 FX. Please post your thoughts, which will help me in making a buy decision. 1. I ride on paved mountain roads. Is this Trek 7.9 FX good enough? light enough? Will it be lighter than 20 pounds? 2. Is this significantly better than 7.6 FX, that it warrants the extra $ 1,300 ? 3. My country's roads have lots of potholes. Will 28 mm tyre/rim size take the grueling hits? 4. ANy other better bikes I should consider? from other brands? 5. Which gives a better ride quality - Carbon/aluminium? I dont want a jarring ride. Thanks. Andy

trek 7.9 fx review

I don't think any of the fast city hybrid bikes are much for pot hole riding. I would be looking for a fat tire mountain bike for this duty. And what better for pot holes than a 29"er mountain bike. The bigger wheels will roll over the holes much better than the standard 26" tires on most ATB's. If you don't want suspension, you could get a rigid front fork. Or pick up the Salsa version. The nice thing about the 29" mountain bike is that you can install hybrid 700c tires for faster riding, although the compliance will diminish. Gary Fisher offers quite a few 29er's. Salsa sells a rigid 29er. Even a 26" wheeled mountain bike could do you good.

I already have a Gary fisher kaitai with hybrid tyres fitted on it. But the bike weighs 31 pounds, which is way too heavy for the mountains. That is why I wanted a lighter bike, but was concerned about pot hole worthiness.

There are light weight mountain bikes that would serve the purpose. If you ditch the suspension fork you will get under 20 lbs. Trek's Carbon hard tail 'elite' series would do the trick. Fisher's carbon jobby 29er would likely aswell. Just don't look for one without disc brakes, they are getting rare!

Thanks but... Thanks for the info. I will look them up and decide. I thought maintaining a disc brake system was difficult, and so thought will go for regular brakes for easy adjustment and maintenance. Any thoughts?

Take a look at Cannondale's Bad Boy line. It's a very versital bike, allowing you to use 26" or 700 c wheels. also available with or without their headshock suspension.
