Wielerploegen 2022: Trek-Segafredo

Nu het wielerseizoen 2022 langzaam op gang komt, neemt WielerFlits alle ploegen van het hoogste niveau onder de loep. We stellen in de reeks Wielerploegen 2022 alle WorldTeams voor, aan de hand van de transfers, de selecties en de doelstellingen. Vandaag is het de beurt aan Trek-Segafredo. Wat kunnen we verwachten van kopmannen Bauke Mollema , Jasper Stuyven en Mads Pedersen ?

Terugblik op 2021

Trek-Segafredo sloot het jaar af met een monumentale overwinning op zak. Daar zal elke WorldTour-ploeg voorafgaand aan het seizoen blij mee zijn. Jasper Stuyven was degene die Milaan-San Remo wist te winnen namelijk, een zege die niet snel vergeten zal worden. De klassiekercoureur werd later ook nog vierde in de Ronde van Vlaanderen en zevende in de Benelux Tour.

Bauke Mollema behaalde de andere WorldTour-zege van de Amerikaanse ploeg. De Nederlandse rasaanvaller won in totaal drie keer, waaronder in de Touretappe naar Quillan. Mads Pedersen won op zijn beurt Kuurne-Brussel-Kuurne en etappes in de rondes van Denemarken en Noorwegen, Quinn Simmons zegevierde in de Ronde van Wallonië en Vincenzo Nibali werd de winnaar van de Ronde van Sicilië.

Aantal overwinningen: 19

De zieke teammanager Luca Guercilena heeft afgelopen seizoen een drukke transferperiode gekend. De Italiaan zag negen renners vertrekken, waaronder kopman Vincenzo Nibali . De ervaren klassementsrenner (37) was de laatste jaren echter steeds minder vaak in staat tot de klasse-uitspattingen die hij voorheen had. Omdat hij voor het Italiaanse koffiemerk Segafredo belangrijk was, zal de Haai van de Straat van Messina  ook behoorlijk op het budget hebben gedrukt. Nibali keerde afgelopen winter terug bij Astana Qazaqstan. In zijn kielzog trok diens broertje Antonio met hem mee, die nochtans zijn contract verlengde.

Ook besloot een tweetal af te zwaaien. Koen de Kort – met wie in het voorjaarsnummer van RIDE Magazine een groot interview staat – was dat al van plan aan het einde van 2022, maar de ervaren rot werd na een ongeluk in zijn vrije tijd daartoe eerder gedwongen. De Kort verloor drie vingers, waardoor een topsportcarrière niet langer houdbaar was. Hij blijft wel aan de ploeg verbonden, want inmiddels zetelt hij in het management van het team. Ook Kiel Reijnen vond het mooi geweest. De 35-jarige Amerikaan was iemand waarop je altijd kon bouwen. Hij reed zes seizoenen bij deze ploeg, de Nederlander een jaartje minder.

Naast het afscheid van de Nibali-broers en de twee brokken ervaring, besloot Trek-Segafredo vooral de reservebank van het middenveld af te serveren. Niklas Eg (27), Ryan Mullen (27) en gitaarvirtuoos Nicola Conci (25) reden alle drie vier seizoenen voor de Amerikanen, maar zij vertrekken naar respectievelijk Uno-X, BORA-hansgrohe en Gazprom-RusVelo. Daarnaast werd er afscheid genomen van twee jonge coureurs, die slechts twee jaar de tijd kregen om te overtuigen. Daarin slaagden Michel Ries en Charlie Quarterman (beiden 23) allebei niet. De Luxemburger vertrok naar Arkéa Samsic, de Brit is nog ploegloos.

Waar negen renners het schip verlieten, stapten elf nieuwe matrozen aan boord. Wat opvalt is dat er geen nieuwe kopman gehaald is na het vertrek van Nibali. Er is juist ingezet op het aantrekken van een nieuwe kern met jonge renners. Trek-Segafredo telt namelijk vier profdebutanten in 2022. Daarbij de boomlange Nederlandse tempobeul Daan Hoole , de sterke Spaanse spurter Marc Brustenga en het Deense klimtalent Asbjørn Hellemose . Maar ook de U23-wereldkampioen verdedigt nu de kleuren van Trek-Segafredo. Filippo Baroncini is een sterke klassiekerspecialist met veel inhoud, een goede tijdrit en een sterk eindschot.

Verder werd vooral de breedte van het team verder versterkt. De ervaren Baskische sprinter Jon Aberasturi maakt een opvallende move naar Trek-Segafredo, maar verder zijn het allemaal renners die goed lijken te passen bij dit team. Zo keerde Tony Gallopin terug en samen met Otto Vergaerde versterkt hij de klassiekerkern. Met Dario Cataldo kwam er een ervaren klimknecht bij en rasaanvaller Simon Pellaud zal zich ook willen laten gelden. Klimmer Antwan Tolhoek wil dan weer meer voor zichzelf rijden. Met zijn aanvalslust zit hij goed bij Trek-Segafredo. En dan is er ook nog Markus Hoelgaard . De ijzersterke Noorse allrounder is een laatbloeier, die in Amerikaanse dienst nog betere prestaties najaagt.

Doelstellingen voor 2022

Sinds de tijden van Fabian Cancellara zijn de klassiekers altijd een belangrijke periode in het jaar voor Trek-Segafredo. Zo ook dit jaar weer. Jasper Stuyven zorgde vorig jaar met winst in Milaan-San Remo dat de druk eraf was nog voordat de zwaardere Vlaamse koersen begonnen waren. Ook nu zullen de Amerikanen mikken op succes in Vlaanderen. Met dus Stuyven en ex-wereldkampioen Mads Pedersen als vooruitgeschoven pionnen. Ook Edward Theuns , Alex Kirsch en nieuwkomers Markus Hoelgaard en Otto Vergaerde zullen zich willen bewijzen. Wereldkampioen Filippo Baroncini kan op een mooi programma rekenen. Hij is onder meer voorzien voor Strade Bianche, de Ronde van Vlaanderen én Parijs-Roubaix.

Voor de Ardennenklassiekers ontbeert Trek-Segafredo een uitgesproken kopman. Wel zal Bauke Mollema in de Waalse Pijl en Luik-Bastenaken-Luik proberen om een goed resultaat uit de brand te slepen. Korte tijd later zien we hem ook terug in de Giro d’ Italia, waar hij op jacht gaat naar ritzeges. Giulio Ciccone zal ook de ronde van zijn thuisland betwisten, maar hij weet nog niet in wat voor rol. In de Tour de France zal de Italiaan opnieuw aantreden, net als Mollema. Die laatste gaat ook daar jagen op ritwinst, Ciccone waarschijnlijk ook. Dat zal tevens het uitgangspunt van Antwan Tolhoek zijn, die normaal ook naar de Tour mag.

Stuyven en Pedersen staan eveneens al met pen opgeschreven voor de Tour, Brengt ons meteen bij de Ronde van Spanje, de laatste grand tour van het jaar. Daar zijn de plekken nog lang niet allemaal ingevuld, maar het lijkt erop dat Juan Pedro López de kans krijgt om zijn dertiende plek van 2021 te verbeteren. De Zwitserse rasaanvaller Simon Pellaud zal er proberen een rit te winnen, terwijl Antonio Tiberi er zijn grote ronde-debuut maakt. De 20-jarige Italiaan staat te boek als een groot talent voor het rondewerk. Op het einde van het seizoen liggen er altijd een aantal verrassingen op de rol. Tiberi kan daar zo een van zijn.

Naast Tiberi en de vier aanwinsten, rijdt er nog schoon volk rond bij de Amerikanen. Baroncini passeerde al de revue, Marc Brustenga zal zich willen tonen en ook Asbjørn Hellemose zal het in hem gestelde vertrouwen willen terugbetalen. Maar ook Quinn Simmons (20) behoort tot deze ploeg. Hij geldt al een paar jaar als absoluut toptalent, alleen tot op heden kwam het er nog niet uit. Mattias Skjelmose slaagde daar in zijn eerste seizoen wel meteen in, door in meerdere rittenkoersen kort te eindigen. Ook is het wachten op de doorbraak van de door blessures geplaagde sprinter Matteo Moschetti . Hij is al van de nul af; in de Ronde van Valencia versloeg hij onder meer Fabio Jakobsen en Elia Viviani .

2022 team preview: Trek-Segafredo men

A strong Classics core and some fresh new talent, but American-registered team are lacking other departments

Trek took over the reigns as the team's lead sponsor back in 2014 and joined forces with Italian brand Segafredo two years later. The organisation prides itself on also running one of the most successful women’s teams in the WorldTour and in recent years has won Classics, occupied a step on the Tour de France podium, and brought on a raft of young talent from the U23 ranks.

Under the strong leadership of general manager Luca Guercilena, the team have become one of the most stable operations in the men’s WorldTour, with a strong emphasis on the Classics dating back to Fabian Cancellara’s time on the team, and a penchant for giving veteran GC riders a home.

They may not possess a megastar, like a Pogačar or a Van Aert, but there’s depth to the squad, as well a real sense that they want to develop young riders. 

How did they fare in 2021?

The American-registered team enjoyed a relatively successful season by their standards with 19 wins, a Monument and a stage at the Tour de France.

They were competitive on several fronts but the continued decline of Vincenzo Nibali and their lack of stage racing depth, as well as not having a marquee sprinter, held them back from consistently competing for major honours.

They lost veteran road captain Koen de Kort to a life-changing accident mid-way through the season before creating the perfect management role for the vastly experienced ex-rider. Riders such as Julien Bernard, Gianluca Brambilla, Kenny Ellionde and Toms Skujins often epitomised the team’s attacking spirit but there were just two WorldTour wins all year – a statistic that must be broken in 2022. 

The team have signed 11 new faces in total for 2022, and while they’ve failed to try and replace Nibali with a stage racing leader, they have invested heavily in youth with several hugely talented signings.

The U23 world champion Filippo Barconcini is a star in the making, while Daan Hoole and Markus Hoelgaard join an already young and exciting contingent at the team. Tony Gallopin and Dario Cataldo continue the team’s ethos of signing veterans past their best, while the arrival of Antwan Tolhoek and Simon Pellaud could prove to be two of the shrewdest signings of the 2022 season. 

Mads Pedersen : The 2019 men's road world champion won Kuurne-Bruxelles-Kuurne at the start of the year and finished second in the Bredene Koksijde Classic before COVID-19 disrupted the entire team’s Classics operation. Injuries and a lack of form dominated the Dane’s summer, but he returned to the fore in the closing months of the campaign with a couple of wins and a string of impressive results.

It wasn’t the season Pedersen or Trek were hoping for, but he remains one of their best riders for both the Classics and stage races. What he lacks in pure speed he makes up for with one of the best racing brains in the peloton, and at 26 he should be closing in on his absolute peak. On his day he’s one of the few riders who can take on Wout van Aert and Mathieu van der Poel and win. He’s a box office rider who delivers one big win each year.

Jasper Stuyven : The 29-year-old finally got his hands on the Monument win his career deserved with a consummate all-round performance at Milan-San Remo. While any rider would point to such a win as the mark of a successful season, there’s still a feeling that Stuyven could have achieved more during the campaign.

That’s perhaps harsh but fourth in Flanders, second into Le Creusot at the Tour, fourth in the Worlds and third in Paris-Tours show that there were plenty of near misses that could have changed his season from great to incredible. The hope at Trek is that, with a Milan-San Remo title under his belt, Stuyven can replicate that success more consistently in the Classics. He and Pedersen form a formidable duo. 

Giulio Ciccone : With Nibali returning to Astana and the team unwilling or unable to sign a marquee stage racer in the transfer market, Ciccone will be expected to step up in the Grand Tours. The young Italian has shown flashes of brilliance in the last few seasons but, at 27, Trek will be expecting an improved level of durability and consistency from their star climber, who incredibly has never finished the top 10 of a WorldTour stage race.

Ciccone, on his day, is a sensational talent – you don’t wear the yellow jersey by chance – and a climber-friendly Giro is the perfect terrain for a coming-of-age display. All of Italy - not just Trek - will be willing him on. 

Quinn Simmons : Trek-Segafredo could have jettisoned the American after his suspension for making 'divisive, incendiary and detrimental' social media statements in 2020 , or simply let him run his contract down at the end of this year. However, they re-signed the 20-year-old, who insisted that he did not deserve to be suspended .

On a sporting level, Simmons remains a talent and his win in the Tour de Wallonie, coupled with a string of other impressive rides, illustrated his ability on the bike. His return on investment in the spring Classics may have been below his own expectations in 2021, but Simmons will no doubt put in head-turning performances next season.

Bauke Mollema : The Dutchman might be 35 but he remains the heartbreak of the Trek-Segafredo offence in both stage races and one-day hilly Classics. In fact, he’s pound for pound the best signing the team have made since losing Fabian Cancellara to retirement. He might not be a top 10 superpower in Grand Tours anymore, but his diesel-like qualities make him an excellent contender in long range mountain battles and take him deep into those Italian one-day Classics.

He’s an excellent reader of a race, and profits from going early when the pre-race favourites are busy sizing each other up. It’s somewhat surprising that the veteran has only once challenged for a KOM jersey in a major Tour but with his shift away from GC, that could become a target as he chases stages in both the Giro and Tour. Whatever happens, we can expect Mollema to race a full and versatile campaign, with plenty of all-out action and a few wins thrown in for good measure. 

Trek-Segafredo are arguably one of the strongest Classics squads in the peloton, with Stuyven and Pedersen in their prime and a spine running through the team that suggests that both riders will be ably supported through the spring campaign.

If the team can replicate their 2021 success with a Monument and a Kuurne-Brussels-Kuurne title thrown in for good measure, the season will be deemed a success but Pedersen and Stuyven will be aiming to increase their shared win tally from four in 2021 to something more in line with their undoubted talent. 

Matteo Moschetti could chip in with some wins if he continues his development, while Mollema will lead the line and spearhead the team in Grand Tours and major one-day hilly races. The loss of Nibali should be seen as a strength as more riders will be allowed to step out from the Italian’s shadow and target their own success, but stage hunting and aggressive racing is going to be team’s main focus for the season. 

Daan Hoole looks like he could be on the cusp of a breakout year, while Baroncini could hit the ground running and become an instant success. He’s the real deal. Ciccone will be hoping to deliver at the Giro and if he can stay healthy a top-five on GC is within his bandwidth. 

With Mollema trending towards one-day races and stage hunting, the team are without a proven GC threat in three-week races. The obvious candidate to fill the void is Ciccone but the Italian has failed to finish any of his last three Grand Tours, and his best result remains 16th at the 2019 Giro.

Granted, he was in a strong position during the final week of this year’s Giro before he pulled out but that’s a lot of pressure to put on a rider who has legitimate questions over his durability. 

There’s a lot to be excited about, with youth development a clear target for the team’s strategy, but if the Classics core fail to shine it’s hard to see where the major wins are going to come from. 

Trek-Segafredo perpetually feel like a team in transition but the departure of Nibali and the signing of a raft of exciting prospects sets them up perfectly for the next few years. In Stuyven and Pedersen they have two of the best Classics specialists in the world, while Mollema will provide cover and consistency throughout the campaign. 

There’s certainly some filler on the 31-man roster but roughly a third of the squad won a race in 2021, which suggests that there’s some undervalued talent within their ranks, too. 

They still, however, lack a top-notch specialist sprinter and, without a superstar GC rider, they’re never going to punch above their weight when it comes to the number of wins they end the season on. They’re going to have to rely on quality over quantity but expect at least one of their young riders to make a name for themselves.

Gearing up the Tour, Part 1: How Trek-Segafredo builds its bikes

Inside Trek-Segafredo's preparation process for the biggest race of the year

Preparing a WorldTour team for the Tour de France is a massive undertaking, so much more than rounding up eight riders and eight bikes and getting them to a start line. The bikes are complex feats of engineering that require fine tuning and constant maintenance. Riders’ bodies are perhaps even more complicated, each needing individually-tailored nutrition and recovery. Supplying a team for three-plus weeks in France takes coordination across dozens of people working all over the world.

In three parts, we’ll go through nearly every product used by Trek-Segafredo during the Tour de France, and how our partners prepare for cycling’s biggest spectacle. First up, the bike:

Trek-Segafredo technical director Matt Shriver begins preparing for the next Tour de France almost as soon as the previous one ends. In August, he places orders for the bike equipment and sizes he thinks the team will need the next year. He has to guess what the race lineup will be. If he’s good, he might get five of the eight riders correct.

Chain rings: Never leave home without one (or several dozen).

“I think that’s probably what people don’t realize, especially when you’re doing something special or custom: You really have to plan that far in advance,” Shriver says. “And you get all the approvals from sponsors, because it’s usually a collaboration. They need to sign off and see what we’re doing, too.”

Riders need a lot of equipment to get through 21 stages in 23 days. A lot of spare equipment is necessary to cover the wear and tear (not to mention the inevitable crash or two) of so much racing in such a compact period of time. Here’s an approximation of everything the team will pack.

• At least three frames for every rider, and four for team leaders. 
• Two spare frames of every size ranging from 50 to 60 cm., for roughly 40 frames in all. 
• 26 SRAM double chain rings, and 12 singles, ranging from 50 to 56 teeth on the big ring.
• 54 SRAM cassettes.
• 60 Bontrager wheelsets .
• 50 spare tubular Pirelli tires aside from what’s already on the bikes.
• 12 Wahoo computers — one for every rider, plus four spares.
• 3,000 (!) water bottles.

Wheels make the Tour go 'round.

And that’s just what goes on the bike (we’ll get to the rest at a later date). All of it brand new, so that riders can be sure their equipment is in its absolute best shape. 

According to Shriver, the final weeks leading up to the Tour are relatively relaxed. The bulk of Tour preparation takes place over the course of the months prior. In that time period, Trek-Segafredo works closely with partners like Pirelli to test and perfect equipment to their needs.

“Working with a top WorldTour team such as Trek-Segafredo requires a huge amount of work that goes on behind the scenes,” Davide Valsecchi, Pirelli’s Digital and Sports Marketing Director of Cycling, says. “It all begins with the testing activities that never really cease during the season that define what Pirelli should provide to the riders and the mechanics. … Generally speaking we test new solutions during the winter training camps and the first stage races of the year so that everything is ready before the start of the Grand Tours in May.”

Sometimes you can't avoid breaking the chain.

Trek-Segafredo’s service course near Ghent, Belgium, is the staging area for all of the team’s competitions ( as well as for Trek Factory Racing ). SRAM stocks it with bike components in November, ahead of the team training camp in December, so that the team can pull from its own shelves whenever it needs parts. SRAM will then deliver a second drop of equipment during the season before the Tour, so that Trek-Segafredo has its latest or most recently updated products. 

That refined equipment is often informed by performance and feedback from the team.

“We also test prototype products outside of racing with the team, where we will go to a specific course or terrain to test products that are in development,” Jason Phillips, Director of SRAM Racing, says. “We have developed a lot of components with the help and feedback of Trek-Segafredo.” 

Part bike, part computer.

Other partners like Wahoo and Bontrager also take advantage of their access to Trek-Segafredo riders to make their products better. Because Bontrager is a Trek brand, it relies on an exclusive communication channel to the team that helps them prototype equipment like helmets and shoes in early races that might be used in final forms during the Tour (and, later, become available to consumers). That tight relationship also means that the team rarely has trouble getting its hands on supply.

“We’re lucky in that we’ve run a WorldTour race team for many many years, so we’re fortunate in that we know what’s needed for the prestigious races like the Tour de France, with guidance from the Trek Race Shop” Sam Foos, Bontrager Marketing Manager, says. “Because we’re so integrated, we get to share testing data and knowledge on all the equipment we provide to the riders. This allows riders to pick wheels, helmets, and shoes that best fit their needs. It’s an added bonus that we can focus on how to make the riders faster, not just from the frames, but everything that says Bontrager on it. 

“It’s all a part of a system, and we develop it that way.”

Rubber, meet road.

Wahoo also prides itself on its communication. The company provides Trek-Segafredo with two shipments: The first before the season so that the team can begin racing, and the second to complete the rest of the team’s competition needs for the year. In addition, Wahoo has a designated team liaison who makes sure that coaches and mechanics are well-schooled on their computers so that they can help riders as needed.

Wahoo personnel are also often nearby at races to check in on the team and help troubleshoot any last minute issues. 

“[Our liaison] always carries various spares during these visits so that the team is never more than an hour away from receiving product in a race environment — this is pretty dedicated service and quite unique!” Louis Quinton, Wahoo’s Head of Marketing for Europe, says. “He is also available day and night all year to answer any questions from the team, riders and coaches directly.”

Ready for action.

Trek-Segafredo brings a lot of spare equipment to the Tour de France, but sometimes unforeseen problems — major crashes being the most frequent — require partners to make last minute deliveries in between stages. In those situations, having long-standing relationships and experience in racing can make a major difference in performance.

“At this point [our preparation process] is pretty autonomous. Just from years and years of experience and how organized the Tour is, we know what to expect. We know how it works,” Shriver says. “So, from that perspective, [preparing for the Tour] is pretty easy. Obviously it’s the biggest, most important race of the year, but it is another bike race, and we just kind of take it to the next level.”
