When planning any trip the inevitable question of how much it will cost and what to budget for is a huge consideration for most of us. In this article I will go through the main costs you need to budget for when planning your trip to the UK.

Obviously, individual costs will vary depending on your interests and travel style – Are you travelling solo/with family? Are you a luxury or budget traveller? Are you planning to travel independently or with a tour? Etc

As with my UK trip planner (which helps you to plan your visit step by step) this guide to calculating UK trip costs will help you through the process of budgeting in a systematic manner whether you are a budget traveller or looking to splurge on your trip.

Calculating how much a trip to the UK will cost

If you are flying to the UK from outside of Europe flights will probably be the most expensive part of your trip.

It is worth calculating the cost of your flights as early as possible in the budgeting process.

Listen to our podcast episode #93 with Michelle Chang. She has an excellent course called Book Better Flights , where she shares practical tips and strategies for finding and booking the best flight deals, particularly from the US to Europe.

Accommodation in the UK

There are many accommodation options across the UK to suit all travel styles and budgets.

Accommodation in major cities and popular tourist destinations such as the Cotswolds and the Lake District will generally be more expensive but budget options are available if you book as early as possible.

Expect to pay more for accommodation in London than elsewhere in the UK. I recommend staying within close proximity of the main sights in London even though hotels, Airbnb and apartments may be slightly more expensive.

There is nothing worse than having a long day of sightseeing followed by a commute to accommodation on busy public transport.

Here are the average prices per double room per night depending on your preferences:

  • Budget – Less than £65 per night (London £90 + per night)
  • Mid-range – £65 – 120 per night (London £120+ per night)
  • Luxury – £120+ per night (London £200+ per night)

There are a number of budget chain hotels in the UK which provide excellent accommodation options. These include Travelodge, Premier Inn, Ibis, Z Hotels, Holiday Inn and Novotel.

From cosy cottages in the Cotswolds , to log cabins with hot tubs in the Lake District, to castles in Scotland and luxury apartments in London there are many unique holiday homes available to rent across the UK.

Transportation

If you plan to explore the UK there are a variety of transportation options available.

Renting a car is a great way to explore the countryside and areas which have limited or poor public transport options. However don’t forget to consider insurance, petrol, and parking fees when calculating costs.

Average costs for car hire in the UK per week are

  • £100 + a week for a small car suitable for 2 people
  • £160 + for a mid size car suitable for 4 people
  • £250 + per week for a larger car, people carrier or SUV

Avoid driving in London (limited parking, traffic jams and the Congestion Charge are just a few reasons why)

If you do plan to pick up a hire car after a few days in London it is cheaper to do this at a train station outside of the capital.

Other ways to save money on car rental include hiring the car for a week or more (prices are more expensive for shorter rental periods) and to return the car to the same location. Of course, this is not always possible but it will reduce costs.

If you plan to visit the major cities across the UK travelling by train is an excellent way to get from A-B-C-D. Purchase tickets in advance (bookings open 90 days before the date of travel) or consider purchasing train passes for greater savings.

Check out the TrainLine for prices.

For budget-conscious travellers there are long-distance coach services to all major airports and cities. Do bear in mind that though this may be the cheapest option it is also the slowest.

Transfers from major airports such as from Heathrow into London can be taken by taxi, train or bus with dedicated express trains connecting to local public transport.

For travel around London, an Oyster Card (a reusable electronic ticket) enables access to London transport, including the Tube and buses. Contactless payments are also an alternative— compare the two methods to decide which is best for your needs.

From fish and chips to pub food to 3 Michelin starred restaurants there are options for every budget in the UK!

To maximise your food budget visit markets, tea shops, pubs and fish and chip shops which can all offer reasonably priced food options. We also recommend looking for accommodation with breakfast included or booking an apartment or Airbnb so you can cater for some of the meals yourselves.

Supermarkets such as Sainsburys , Marks & Spencers and Tesco’s offer ‘Meal Deals’ of a sandwich, drink and packet of crisps/chocolate bar or piece of fruit for between £3 – £5.

Chain restaurants such as Nandos, Frankie and Benny’s, Harvester, Brewers Fayre, Bella Italia, Prezzo, Toby Carvery, Wagamama, Pizza Hut and Wetherspoons are found in major cities and are reasonably priced options.

Be careful with drinks though as it can push up costs. Often eateries will have speciality nights – curry/ steak for example with special offers such as 2 for 1 or a free drink.

If enjoying an afternoon tea is on your UK bucket list there are many options to choose from to suit all budgets and tastes.

You will find many different afternoon teas to choose from in London including traditional (The Ritz or Fortnum & Mason), themed (Harry Potter and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory) or afternoon teas with spectacular views (The Shard) Prices vary considerably but expect to pay on average from £40 a head in London

You can read more about different British foods you may co me across in this article.

Average costs

  • Pub meal – £7 -11
  • Main course in restaurant – £10 to £20
  • 3 course meal in a good restaurant – £40 +

English breakfast

Sightseeing expenses

If you are heading to London the good news is that there are lots of free things to do there – many of the world famous museums and art galleries have no admission charges (there may be small fees for specific exhibits) but entry is free.

If you have a long bucket list of sights to see in London it is worth calculating if the London Pass is a cost-effective purchase.

The London Pass includes entry to 80 of London’s main attractions including the Tower of London , the London Eye , Westminster Abbey and the view from the Shard and could save you over 50% on regular gate prices. Pass holders can also skip the queue and avoid long waits for some of the most popular attractions.

⭐️ Click here to find out how you could save money with the London Pass

There are a myriad of tours to choose from in London to suit all tastes and interests from walking tours, themed tours, tours with a historical focus, foodie tours or general sightseeing tours aimed at first-time visitors .

Costs vary depending on the group size with small group tours prices from £40 – £200 and larger group tours from £15 plus per person.

Private tours of London and attractions are available and can cost anything from £25 per person upwards.

Day tours to popular destinations outside of London such as the Cotswolds , Stonehenge and Oxford vary again in cost depending on distance, the number of places visited, inclusions and group size. Expect to pay approximately £75 + per person for a larger group tour from London (or any other major UK city)

Private day trips to destinations outside London cost from around £500 + for 4 persons.

If you are on a budget, ticket costs, tours, and day trips can really mount up.

I recommend identifying the most important places for you to visit (for every destination you include in your UK itinerary) and calculating and comparing the costs of an organised tour or day trip with regular gate prices or the cost of travelling to the attraction independently.

Coach trips and sightseeing tours should be included in the cost of a trip to the UK

I recommend taking out insurance as soon as your flights are booked. Not only will insurance provide peace of mind in the event of trip cancellation, but it also ensures you are covered for medical emergencies while away.

Travel insurance may also provide coverage for loss or theft of items, flight delays and even repatriation to your country of origin in the event of a medical emergency.

Obviously, the cost of insurance will vary depending on your country of residence, age, existing medical conditions, and level of cover.

We never travel without insurance. It is just not worth the risk.

Travel Insurance should be included in the cost of a trip to the UK

Don’t forget to add a few ££’s a day towards some of the additional expenses you can expect.

Adding an extra £5/10 per day to cover these smaller daily costs should cover it.

  • Wifi and internet access charges – The cost of accessing wifi will depend on which option you choose – read my detailed guides to the various options for internet access in the UK
  • Tipping – Tipping is not expected in bars. For restaurants, 10% of the bill is fine if service is not included in the bill (often a 12.5% charge will be added so do check). Black cabs round up to the nearest £
  • Storing luggage – £5 for up to 24 hours
  • Souvenirs – Budget a small amount towards any souvenirs you may wish to purchase.

British souvenirs need to be included in the cost of a trip to the UK

How to reduce costs when visiting the UK

If you are visiting the UK during the summer (particularly late July and August) expect prices to be higher.

During UK school holidays (one week at the end of May/beginning of June and 6 weeks from July to early September) prices increase and availability may be limited.

Prices fall during the shoulder season March-May and September-October and the weather is generally not too bad (expect showers and sunny spells)

London is an expensive city to visit but there are ways to reduce your costs.

  • Purchasing an Oyster Card and using public transportation (which is the easiest, quickest and cheapest way to get around London )
  • If you plan to visit a number of popular sights and attractions a London Travel Pass may be the most cost effective way. Read my complete guide to the London Pass and save money when you visit London

While everyone’s trip budget will be different depending on the length of their stay, accommodation choices, transportation, travel style, etc., this budget guide will give you an idea of the cost of your trip to the UK.

How Much Does it Cost to Travel in the UK?

Last updated: April 19, 2024 . Written by Laurence Norah - 28 Comments

One of the most common questions we’re asked from people who read our UK guides, and in particular our detailed one week and two week UK itinerary posts is: how much does it cost to travel in the UK?

Of course, the answer is – it depends! There are a lot of factors to consider, from your travel style (budget to luxury) through to who you are travelling with (solo, family, group), and the kind of travel you want to do (self-drive, group tour, etc).

Then of course there are the attractions you are interested in visiting, the time of year you visit – there are just so many variables to take into account. Which makes answering the question quite tricky!

How much does it cost to travel in the UK - Ardvreck Castle

But we’re going to tackle it anyway. In this post I’m going to go through all the major costs you need to consider when planning a trip to the UK, and provide budget ranges for each of them.

This should give you some good ideas of what a trip like this might cost. We’ll also provide some money saving tips for each area.

Let’s get started.

Table of Contents:

In summary, you are looking at between £75 and £200 per day per person for travel in the UK. These costs will of course vary depending on your travel style, sights visited, type of transport used and dining choices.

In this post we’re going to go into detail on the four main cost areas you need to consider when travelling in the UK. These are:

  • Accommodation
  • Sightseeing

We’re going to look at each of these individually to give you some cost ideas. At the end of the post we’ll then put these together to give ideas of a total trip cost for the UK for a few different travel styles.

1. Transport Costs for Travel in the UK

There are a number of ways to travel in the UK. To start with, there is an excellent public transport network in the UK which includes long distance bus services (also called coaches in the UK), a good passenger rail network and multiple low cost airlines.

NC500 cars and road

Our preferred way of travel in the UK (and abroad), is to self-drive where possible. We find it gives us the greatest flexibility, letting us stop when we want to, and not have to be strict about following a timetable. Of course, depending on the type of trip you want to do, this might not be the best option – if you’re only visiting cities for example, we recommend using public transport to get between them.

Price of Car Rental in the UK

  • Budget : £100 – £150 per week for a small car that will fit two people and luggage
  • Mid-range: £200 – £300 per week for a mid-range car that will fit four people and luggage
  • High-end:  £400 – 600 per week for a small SUV or car capable of carrying more than five people

Money Saving Tips for Car Hire in the UK

Book by the week.  Most car hire companies offer better rates if you book for a week rather than a few days. Of course, there’s no point booking for a week if you only need the car for a day or two, but you might find that seven days is cheaper than six for example. We have also found that when we book a car for two or three weeks, many hire car companies have given us a free upgrade to say thanks for our custom.

Pick up your hire car on leaving the city.  In the UK, there is really no need to have a hire car in a city. UK cities are for the most part easy to get around either on foot, or have excellent public transport networks. Your hire car will likely spend its time costing money in an expensive parking lot. So just book your rental for when you leave the city.

Don’t pick it up at the airport. If you can avoid picking up your hire car at the airport, you will usually save money. Most car hire companies charge higher rates for cars picked up at the airport – it’s a combination of a trapped market and a convenience factor. Compare prices between the airport and the city, and if you can get to the city easily from the airport, and the price is better, do that.

Avoid one-way trips where possible.  Most car hire companies will charge you extra if you want to drop the car off in a different place to where you picked it up. We have actually done this many times – the key is to find a car rental company that charges minimal one-way fees. In our experience, Enterprise is pretty good for this.

Don’t forget the fuel costs. Fuel in the UK is relatively expensive compared to somewhere like the USA. Thankfully, the majority of cars are quite fuel efficient and distances aren’t that great. However, fuel prices vary wildly. Generally, the cheapest fuel can be found at supermarkets, such as Asda, Tesco and Sainsbury’s. The most expensive fuel is usually along the motorways, at the service stations.

Avoid additional fees:  The way that hire companies bump up their revenues is by charging you for a lot of addons when you come to pick up your car. These can include everything from a GPS unit through to extra insurance cover. Many of these are not truly necessary, and some travellers might find that their credit card already offers things like Collision Damage Waiver insurance. So definitely check in advance what addons you need, so you don’t fall prey to high pressure sales tactics at the rental desk.

Use a comparison service:  For car hire, we usually use a comparison search site that lets us compare prices across multiple providers at the same time. We recommend searching for your car rental on Discover Cars here . They compare a range of providers so you can find the best deal for your trip. Just make sure when comparing prices that additional fees like one-way drop offs are covered.

Consider your age:  Car hire companies around the world give better rates to what they consider to be more experienced drivers. Younger drivers, particularly those 21 and under, can pay hefty surcharges for car rental. Usually, drivers over 30 get the best rates. If you are travelling in a group of different ages, consider renting the car in the name of the older driver. Just be aware that you might need to pay more to add additional drivers, so be sure that the named driver is happy to do all the driving if necessary.

Price of Public Transport in the UK

Public transport in the UK is difficult to put a price on as there are huge variables depending on where you are going, how far in advance you book, and how you travel (bus, train, plane) – as well as if you choose to travel in standard class or a more premium class.

As an example though, a one way single ticket from London to Edinburgh by train (~4hr 30 min) would cost you around £150. If you book the same trip in advance, you could go on the same journey for as little as £25 one-way.

A similar journey by coach would take between 10 and 15 hours, and cost between £16 and £80.

You could also fly, which would take around an hour of actual flight time (although you would need to factor in the time of getting to and from the airport and check-in). Flights with a budget airline from London to Edinburgh for example start from as little as £13 (with no luggage!), and go up to around £200.

Money Saving Tips for Public Transport in the UK

Book in advance.  For planes, buses and coaches, the best prices are available if you book well in advance, and if you can be a little bit flexible with your timings. Avoid travelling at peak times (usually 0630 – 0930 & 1530 – 1830).

Use the right booking site.  For train tickets, we recommend The Trainline, which we have found to be the most user friendly option. Opt to pick up your tickets from the station to avoid postal charges, or use their e-ticket option. They also let you book tickets for destinations all across Europe, and so are a handy one stop shop for all your ticket needs.

For long distance buses, there are a number of operators to choose from. The two we would recommend are  National Express  and  Megabus , both of which offer a wide range of routes across the country.

For flights, we suggest a good comparison engine that includes the budget airlines – we recommend Kiwi.com .

Go carry on only.  If you choose to fly, packing carry-on only can save you a good amount in baggage fees. Just be aware that UK airlines have different baggage size standards to other airlines around the world, so always check with the airline first.

2. Accommodation Costs for a UK Trip

Accommodation is one of the major costs for any travel, and a UK trip is no different. Of course, the question  “how much does accommodation cost in the UK?” is not straightforward, and there are multiple factors to consider – everything from time of year through to the level of comfort and service you need will affect the price.

Bunchrew House Hotel

There are lots of options for accommodation in the UK, so whatever your budget, we are confident you will be able to find something to suit your travel needs.

Our costs are based on two people sharing a private room, but there are other options of course, including dormitory accommodation in hostels, if you are looking to save even more.

Price of Accommodation in the UK

  • Budget:  £40 – £100 for a budget room for two people, usually this would be an en-suite room. Dorm rooms are also available, think around £25 per bed.
  • Mid-range: £100 – £150 would get you a nice room for two in most parts of the country
  • High-end: £250+ would normally be the starting point for a room in a luxury property, although deals can be had, see below for more information

Money Saving Tips for Accommodation in the UK

Travel off-peak.  If you can travel in the quieter times of year, such as January and February, particularly in less visited parts of the UK, you can score some remarkable deals. For example, we stayed in this luxury hotel near Inverness for £70 per night including breakfast in February. The same room in June is over £300!

Check the hotel website for deals.  Whilst we love booking engines for their convenience, sometimes we find that a particular property has a special deal running that’s only available if you check their website. These might be things like three nights for the price of two, or free breakfast if you book direct.

Book online.  We use booking.com extensively for our travel accommodation. After making five bookings, we qualified for their extra “Genius” discount, which often scores us an extra 10% off. We also like that they list everything from hostels to apartments to hotels of all categories, making it an excellent one-stop shop for our accommodation needs.

Use Alternative Accommodation Providers . There has been an explosion in options in the accommodation market over the last decade or so. If you’re on a tight budget, definitely consider websites like  Couchsurfing.  There are lot of options out there to help you find great value accommodation, so take advantage of them. Take a look at our guide to AirBnB Alternatives and holiday accommodation websites for the UK for more inspiration.

3. Food Costs for a UK Trip

The UK used to have a pretty poor reputation when it came to food, but thankfully over the last ten – twenty years this has improved a great deal, and you can now get really fantastic meals as you travel. That said, dining in the UK is not particularly cheap, although there are some ways to reduce the costs.

Food costs in the UK - Lochinver Pie Shop

One thing to note, for US readers in particular, tax is always included in menu prices in the UK, so what you see is what you pay. Service is not included, but tips are appreciated.

Price of Dining in the UK

  • Budget:  £5 – £10 per person per meal at a fast food restaurant or takeaway style meal
  • Mid-range:  £10 – £30 per person per meal at a mid-range restaurant or nice pub style meal
  • High-end:  £35+ per person per meal at a nice restaurant

Money Saving Tips for Dining in the UK

Drink less.  Drinking with a meal can really push your budget up. Even soft drinks can be quite expensive in the UK, so if you can stick with tap water with your meal, you can save a fair bit of money.

Find deals.  Whilst not as common as say France, you can still find good deals in the UK for dining out. Many restaurants will offer early-bird dining specials for example, for dining at times earlier than usual, such as 5pm – 6.30pm. Others may have special menu deals, where you can get a two or three course meal at a discount at lunchtime.

Fast food.  Don’t forget the fast food chains if you’re looking for cheap and easy food on the go. As well as reducing your time spent eating if you’re having a full day of exploring, these can be very cheap. To really save money, skip the extras, and find the really cheap menu items. For example, you can normally buy a single hamburger at McDonald’s for under £1. Two of those and a medium fries will keep you going for a while.

Small cafes.  If fast food doesn’t do it for you, consider stopping off at a small cafe. Often attractions have these, as do department stores and other high-street locations. Normally they have a small selection of well priced menu items, such as a soup and a sandwich, or a baked potato with a filling. Usually these meals will come in at under £5 per person.

Supermarket meals. If you’re ok with a cold meal, a reliable cheap option is to get a meal from a supermarket such as Marks and Spencer. These places usually have an extensive range of sandwiches and other snacks, often very well priced. You’ll be able to get a sandwich, snack and a drink for under £5 in most cases. Plus you can then find somewhere pretty to eat it and dine al fresco! Other options for cheap eating include chains like Eat and Pret a Manger, which also offer soups and hot items.

Cook for yourself.  To really save money on your food in the UK, you should opt to cook for yourself if you can. Obviously this will need a bit of forward planning, as you’ll need to book accommodation that includes cooking facilities, such as a self-catering holiday cottage, or a hostel with a kitchen. Cooking for yourself can really save you money though.

Eat the included breakfast. If you’re staying at a hotel or bed and breakfast that includes a breakfast (or other meal), make sure you take advantage of it, as that saves you the cost of a meal.

4. Sight-seeing Costs for a UK Trip

Sight-seeing costs in the UK will really vary depending on what you are interested in seeing. There are lots of free attractions, including many museums and outdoor sights, that won’t cost you anything at all.

Tower Bridge London

There are also other trips and activities, such as day trips to specific sights you might want to see (for example Stonehenge from London ) that you will want to book a tour for. If you are thinking about taking a tour, we can recommend Rabbie’s , who offer small group tours in the UK & Ireland. We also recommend Viator who offer a huge range of tours in the UK .

Costs for sight-seeing in the UK

Costs will vary tremendously depending on what you are interested in. Museums and other attractions like stately homes range from free to around £25 per person at the upper end of the scale, although £6 – £12 per person is a more common cost.

Note that many of the major museums in the UK are free, like the Natural History Museum in London, or the National Museum of Scotland, for example.

If you decide to take a tour, the price of these will vary depending on a number of factors. Private tours will cost more than group tours for example, and multi-day tours will be more expensive than day trips.

As a guide, a day trip from London, such as a visit to Stonehenge  will cost you between £50 and £110 , depending on duration and inclusions. This price is fairly reflective of day trip prices from cities around the UK – see our guides to day trips from Edinburgh , day trips from Glasgow and day trips from Inverness for more inspiration.

Multi-day group tours will cost more, usually in the region of £75 – £150 for each day of the trip. When comparing tours like this, always check what is included and what isn’t – for example, some tours will include accommodation and attraction entry, and others won’t.

Private multi-day group tours are the most expensive option of all, and you should look to budget in the region of £500 – £1000 per day for this sort of tour, which will usually include the cost of your driver and vehicle, with accommodation costs added on top.

Money Saving Tips for Sight-seeing in the UK

Get a City-based Attractions Pass.  If you’re planning on visiting a lot of attractions in the same city, you will probably find that an attractions pass will save you money. For London, we recommend the  London Pass  (see our review here ). For Edinburgh, there’s a good pass that covers Edinburgh’s royal attractions .

Get a society membership. For certain types of attraction in the UK, such as historical homes and castles, you can save money with a membership to the organisation that manages the properties.

In the UK, there are a number of these, but the key organisations are the National Trust and English Heritage .

For English Heritage, visitors to the UK can purchase either a full year long English Heritage membership or a special English Heritage Overseas Visitors Pass .

The latter pass is specially designed for overseas visitors who might want to visit a few attractions on a visit, but who might not get the full value from a yearlong membership.

For the National Trust, the story is similar. You can either join the National Trust, or get a visitor pass here .

Visit on free Days.  Sometimes museums and attractions in the UK will have free days where you can visit for free. Check the attraction’s website or social media accounts for details of when these might be.

Use qualifying concessions. Many attractions offer discounts to different demographics – for example based on your age or eligible military service. It’s always worth checking if you qualify for a discounted price. If so, make sure you carry proof of your eligibility, for example, if it’s an age-based discount, carry official government issued ID like a driving license or passport so you can prove your age.

In Summary: How Much Will a UK Trip Cost you?

Assuming two people are travelling together in the UK, using a hire car to get around and staying in private hotel rooms with en-suite facilities, our suggested costs per person per day would be as follows:

  • Budget : £50 – £100
  • Mid-range:  £100 – £250
  • High-end: £300+

So, for a trip like our suggested two week UK itinerary , you would likely be looking at the following total approximate costs for two people for a two week UK trip.

  • Car hire: £300 – £600 + fuel (~£100 – £200)
  • Accommodation: £700 – £2000+
  • Food: £300 – £1000
  • Sight-seeing / tours:  £200+
  • Total:  from around £750 per person

Of course, you can spend a little less or a lot more, depending on your travel style, but these ballpark figures should give you an idea of costs.

Also, don’t forget to include any visa costs, travel insurance, additional sightseeing, nice meals out, souvenirs, and of course, the cost of getting to and from the UK.

Hello, A friend and I are in our 70’s and would like to do a month+ trip perhaps in April-May 2023 so that we can see a bit more, thinking Wales, Scotland, England, Ireland. Sort of a retirement blowout! Have we lost our minds…definitely! We’re debating about various ways to travel, where to stay, etc. One of us has had Covid but no shot and the other has all shots and still got Covid. Do we both need to be vaxed? We both have Donne ancestral research and would like to see castles in our lineage: Compton in Devonshire, Bamburg, Strickland & Devonshire. She has taught school overseas and I have been. flight attendant and done some travel. Hopefully, we can figure out a rational way to do this. Is there any hope? Thank you!

Sounds like a fun adventure! So currently you don’t need to be vaccinated to travel to the UK. You can see the latest rules here , which you will want to check before you travel. You will also want to check the rules for the country you are traveling from so you can get back home. I’d also add that things can change very quickly, so vaccination requirements for example might be reintroduced if a new strain appears. So if possible being vaccinated might make that easier, because getting a vaccination whilst abroad is likely to be challenging. Whatever you choose though, good insurance is a good idea to cover any eventualities.

I definitely think you can do the trip you mention. Given that your trip is to a few different locations you might find renting and driving a car is going to be the easier option for getting around.

Have a great time!

I’m 70 years old, not well off, always wanted to go to UK (England, Ireland, Scotland). Saved $2000 (!), want to make a trip with my 3 sisters before I die. I appreciate all the advice and suggestions you’ve made and will share with my sister’s and investigate further. Cheerio and much thanks, I want to do what YOU do! You needn’t reply but encouragement would help. Afraid my dream won’t be fulfilled. Annie

It’s lovely to hear from you. I am sure that with your budget the three of you will be able to make the trip happen. There are lots of good value accommodation. I’d recommend looking for good value B&B’s where breakfast is normally included. If you are happy to drive, renting a car between the four of you will be quite inexpensive. Alternatively, we can also recommend the Rabbie’s Tour company – they do really good value tours all around the UK and are a great alternative to driving yourself.

I am very sure you will be able to realise your dream. The main cost is likely to be your flight, but luckily there are lots of routes. I’d suggest signing up for something like Google Flights and their alerts for prices.

I’m also happy to offer more specific input and help if you need it, it’s no trouble at all. If you have any questions, fire away!

Dear Laurence,

Have you ever balanced the costs (in time and money) of car rental, parking and accomodation in UK?

Car rental is relatively unexpensive compared to public transport and hotels whilst unconvenienlty located accomodation sites tend to be more affordable.

Many times, having a car allowed me to stay on those far away locations and swiftly reach my daily tourist destination by car.

On the other hand, parking availability and costs sometimes bars me from reserving otherwise most convenient accomodation sites.

21st May 2020 at 4:55 pm

I haven’t done the maths precisely. The challenge is that public transport costs can vary hugely, depending on how far in advance you book it. The same ticket booked 8 weeks in advance might cost £20, wheras the same day price might be £200. So if you are able to plan in advance and be flexible with dates and times, it can be more affordable.

We prefer to travel by car if we can though, as it’s just a lot easier for the more remote locations. Public transport in the UK is great for cities and towns, but outside of this you start to rely on slower and less regular local bus routes, which will really slow a trip down. For our UK itineraries, my suggestion is usually to start in London, and to only pick up the hire car after you have done the sightseeing in the city. Outside London, parking is generally a lot easier to find and less expensive.

This is great information! Many thanks. I am planning 19 nights in GB in August with my daughter. We want to drive with a train perhaps from London to Edinburgh. One travel agent here in Australia told me he couldn’t find a hire car company that would add my daughter as a second driver due to her age. She will be 21 with an open licence for more than a year. Surely this is not so!!! Are you able to reassure us that we will both be able to drive?

10th February 2020 at 1:28 pm

Thanks very much! So the legal age for renting a car in the UK is 21, however unfortunately many car hire companies set a minimum age of 25 or 23. This is down to each company having their own policy and approach to risk. However, some companies will rent to drivers at 21, such as Sixt – so it is possible. However, they charge hefty fees for the privilege, of up to £39 per day! I wasn’t able to find any other rental companies, but it’s possible if you contact local smaller car rental agencies that you might be able to find a better deal.

Best of luck, and have a great trip!

So pleased to have come across your informative website. We (my husband & I) are looking planning a trip to the UK. We prefer rural rather than cities & hope to spend most of our time exploring Scotland (including some of the outer islands) & Ireland. We tend to ‘wing’ our travels rather than be highly organized. Our quandry is whether to hire a car & find accommodation each night or hire a small campervan. I have heard campervans can be a pain on the narrow roads in rural area’s. We are looking to travel probably in July. Would your answer be different if we came in May?

13th January 2020 at 4:27 pm

Lovely to have you here as a reader 🙂

So a smaller campervan will generally be fine as long as you are used to driving a manual vehicle and don’t mind reversing and driving on the left. I believe based on where your e-mail address suggests you are from that neither of these will be an issue for you.

I would say that based on your preference to wing it, that a campervan is going to make more sense. Whilst it will be more expensive than a normal car, you can get smaller vehicles ( Spaceships just launched in the UK with a range of options for example) which should be reasonably priced and easier to manoeuvre. However, the main reason for suggesting this is that winging it in the Scottish Highlands in both May and July can be a risky approach. Accommodation can book out weeks and sometimes months in advance, and not booking ahead definitely runs the very real risk of having to drive for hours to find somewhere to stay (accommodation is spread out and the roads are slow). Combine this with the fact that there are large areas with no cell phone coverage, and this would end up just being a stressful trip.

So for that reason alone, having your own bed is going to be a lot less stressful.

May and July are both popular times. May is usually busier for normal accommodation, whilst July tends to have more families and campers. May is our favourite month to travel in Scotland though, as you can usually avoid the dreaded midge 😉

We have a range of content on Scotland to help with your planning, I’d say our NC500 camping itinerary would be a great starting point.

Let me know if you have any more questions!

Hello I am really glad to find your website. We are planning to travel UK in March as planing to few liverpool matches at that time. Will it be good time to travel or will it be too cold to explore tourist destination.

Thanks in Advance.

7th January 2020 at 3:10 pm

Hello Renuka,

I will try to help 🙂 It is hard to answer because everyone has a different definition of cold. If you are coming from a tropical country, then March in the UK might seem cold, however if you are travelling from somewhere like Canada, it will feel warm!

Generally, March should be fine though. Temperatures will likely be between 12C and 16C, which in my opinion is good for sightseeing. March is also a good month as it won’t be too busy with tourists. You will want to bring some warm layers and also either an umbrella or raincoat, as rain is likely. That said, rain is a possibility all year in the UK.

I hope this helps 😀

Hi, really great sharing with much details for travelling in UK. Wonder if you have any suggestions for travel to Manchester and thereabouts?

I haven’t visited Manchester for a while, despite living there for a period many years ago. So I don’t currently have any up to date recommendations, however, we hope to visit Manchester soon and fix that!

I love your site and have found great ideas for my family’s upcoming trip.

One question: We are doing a home exchange with a family who has offered to let us use their car–which is great. But we have looked (quite a bit!) online, and it seems to be very difficult to get insurance on anything other than a rental car. Do you have any suggestions?

Thanks, Rosemary

23rd March 2019 at 7:10 pm

Hi Rosemary!

Thanks very much 🙂 So this is an interesting question. Normally in the UK the car insurance policy is associated with a specific driver (normally the owner and then any other drivers) rather than some countries where you insure the car and then anyone can drive it.

My initial response is that I’m not sure exactly how you would go about doing this. Based on my experiences driving friends cars in the UK, they have had to ring their insurance to add me as a named driver. However, I don’t know exactly how this works with non-UK licenses, nor do I know how it might affect their insurance should something happen.

I did a search, and whilst this service does exist, it doesn’t seem to cover US license holders, only holders from specific countries like those in the EU, Switzerland, Australia and New Zealand.

The only company I found that does seem to include US drivers was this one: https://www.hertsinsurance.com/walkabout/

I have never used them and I can’t comment on what they cover or if they are any good, but it might be worth a try!

Good luck 🙂

You will find UK car hire half the price of the US. You can get a small car for £80 a week

Also dont forget all UK national museums (about 300 or so), are free

23rd December 2018 at 4:32 pm

Thanks for your input! I’ve updated the budget hire car price. I think £100 – £150 is reasonable, I’ve taken a look on various sites and for various dates, and it’s a definite struggle to get a week of car hire with unlimited mileage for much less than that.

I’ll make a point about the free museums too 🙂

Thanks again!

Awfully glad to have found your website. Very informative. 6 of us retirees (age 57-80) are planning to self-drive UK for 2 weeks, visiting Cornwall and Wales. Would like advice on accommodation (homestay/airbnb?), etc. Thank you.

27th November 2018 at 11:21 am

Our pleasure. With a group, an AirBnB or similar would be a great idea, as you can usually get more for your money. Our only advice is to only book places with good reviews. The best option is simply to search a site like AirBnb (we also have a list of Airbnb alternatives here, ) for the dates and number of people for the destinations you want to visit, and work from there.

Have a great trip!

19th January 2019 at 4:14 pm

Thank you for your suggestions. We are also looking at mpv for hire for six. Is it cheaper to get the vehicle at the airport? Thank you.

19th January 2019 at 4:24 pm

My pleasure. If you mean in comparison to booking in advance, I would say in general it will be more expensive booking car hire at the airport.

If you mean will it be cheaper picking up from the airport or from another location, usually it is cheaper to pick up a car from an location different to the airport, as airport car hire is nearly always more expensive than city locations, due to the convenience.

According to  Numbeo , the  UK is the 12th most expensive country  to live in out of 122 surveyed. (2016). The UK average is 0.81 the cost of living in New York.

Local purchasing power (cost of living / average wage),  in the UK is the 22nd most expensive out of 122.

The  UK  cost of living is relatively high, but this also reflects the relatively high wages in the  UK.

The UK cost of living is also quite high due to higher transport and energy costs. Tax rates are higher then US/European rates for goods like alcohol, petrol and cigarettes.

Regional differences (North/South) Divide?

There is a North/South Divide in the UK. With the cost of living in London 15% higher then that in Manchester. For example rents in London are an average of 52% higher than Manchester!

So if you want to explore the UK on a Budget, consider spending less time in London and more time in other cities such as Manchester, Birmingham, Leeds, Liverpool and Historic places such as York or Bath.

18 ways to explore England on a budget

Emily Luxton

From free activities to budget meals, these top tips can help you save money when you visit England © Photo by Roo Lewis / Getty Images

From cliff-backed beaches and quaint villages to vibrant cities and historic sights, England has plenty to entice visitors. But it can also be a fairly expensive destination, particularly in terms of accommodations, tours and sightseeing .

The good news? Many of England’s museums , natural sights and heritage attractions are free. Public transportation can be affordable when planned in advance, and plenty of wallet-friendly dining options exist: from pub lunches to the iconic takeaway fish and chips.

Even London , famously one of Europe’s most expensive cities, can be explored on a budget if you’re careful. Outside of the major tourist destinations, the rest of England becomes much more affordable, so heading off the beaten path can be particularly rewarding.

Get ready to explore the land of rolling countryside, ancient castles, and dazzling white cliffs with these top money-saving tips and a guide to daily costs.

A hand holding a box of fish and chips at the beach on a bright sunny day

Average daily costs in England

Hostel room: £15–30 (dorm bed) Hotel room for two: £100 Self-catering apartment (including Airbnb): £70  Camping pitch: £20–30 Single bus ticket: £2.80 (can reach over £6 in rural areas) Coffee: £3 Takeaway sandwich: £3 Dinner for two at a mid-range restaurant: £30–50  Pint at the bar: £4–6 Takeaway fish and chips: £10 Pub lunch: £12.50–25

Total average daily cost per person: £50–150

Bear in mind that travel costs – particularly accommodation – vary significantly across England depending on the destination. Prices in London and other popular cities are generally much higher than in smaller towns or rural areas.

Figure out which London airport is the cheapest to fly to

London has six major airports but transport costs into the city center – or further afield – can vary widely. To figure out which airport is cheapest to fly to in England, you should factor in the onward travel costs to your final destination.

Heathrow, London’s main and busiest airport, is on the London Underground's Piccadilly Line and the new Elizabeth Line, so travel into central London can cost as little as £5.60. Buses from Heathrow Central Bus Station can provide affordable onward travel to the rest of England.

The second largest airport, Gatwick, competes directly with Heathrow for a number of destinations, often resulting in lower flight prices. It’s not on the London Underground, but there is a train station and a bus station with connections into central London starting from £13.30 and £7 respectively. There are also good connections with other parts of England, particularly the south.

London’s Luton, Southend, and Stansted airports are popular hubs for budget airlines such as EasyJet and Ryanair, though they have a longer journey time into central London. Finally, the centrally-located London City Airport is usually the most expensive to fly to, but allows for cheap and convenient onward travel within the city center.

Two friends board a train

Remember to check other destination airports

Depending on your onward travel plans, flying into London might not be your best bet. Manchester Airport is the third biggest in the UK and has flight connections with over 200 destinations worldwide . As with Heathrow and Gatwick, the amount of flight options can drive competition between airlines and result in lower prices.

Smaller airports throughout England may be better positioned for onward travel to other parts of the country. Bristol and Newquay airports are much closer to Southwest England than the London airports, for example, while Birmingham Airport might be a better option for the Midlands.

Remember to factor in the price of onward travel, as this can have a huge impact on travel costs. If you want to visit the Lake District, trains from London Heathrow to Oxenholme train station take almost 10 hours and start from £114.20 . Trains from Manchester Airport to Oxenholme, by comparison, take 1h 39m and start from £6.50.

If you’re trying to get the best flight deal possible, it’s a good idea to widen your search to include all English airports and to check the onward travel options before making your decision.

Weigh up your transport options

Unfortunately, public transportation isn’t always the cheapest or most practical way of getting around England. Most cities and towns have good internal bus networks, but many rural areas and small towns have limited – or no – public transport services, and trains between cities can be pricey.

Train tickets are notoriously expensive in England, but traveling off-peak and booking around 12 weeks in advance can dramatically reduce costs. Check and compare train times and ticket options on National Rail . If you plan on traveling by train regularly, purchasing a National Rail annual railcard may help reduce costs.

The best way to travel around England for budget visitors is by coach, but journey times are often much longer than by train or car and the routes aren’t always convenient. Bus travel is cheapest when booked direct: the two main operators are National Express and Megabus . Both offer competitive prices.

If you plan on visiting multiple destinations or traveling to parts of England with limited public transport services, driving may prove the most practical way to get around. According to  Kayak , car hire in the UK is £43 per day on average, although prices can be as low as £16 per day.

Book transport in advance for the best deals

If you plan to travel around England via public transport, booking in advance is almost always the cheapest option. Advance train tickets can be around 50% cheaper, while Trainline claims its customers save an average of 61% when booking in advance.

Train tickets can usually be booked around 12 weeks before the departure date, while bus tickets from National Express – the UK’s largest coach operator – go on sale up to one year in advance.

Find free parking

Park & Ride services on the outskirts of towns and cities usually offer free parking when you pay for the bus into the center. This usually works out much cheaper than paying for city center parking, not to mention congestion fees, which are becoming increasingly common in busy cities.

Street parking, where allowed, is often free in England, though sometimes only for a limited time, and rarely in city or town centers. Apps like AppyParking and Parkopedia can help you find free places to park.

Visit in spring or autumn for the best prices

June to August is the peak tourist season in the UK. Travel costs, especially accommodation, can rise dramatically during these months, as well as during school and public holidays. The shoulder seasons of April to May and September to October are often much quieter and cheaper times to visit. The weather is usually fairly mild, though changeable and with a greater chance of rain than in summer.

November to March is the off-season in England and is generally the cheapest time to visit (except Christmas). It’s worth noting that many outdoor and summer-based tourist attractions close during winter, especially in seaside resorts.

Avoid traveling during school and bank holidays

School and public holidays are the most popular travel times in England and tend to see significant price increases. To save money, avoid traveling during school holidays, which happen every six to seven weeks, if you can.

The exact dates vary across the country , but generally speaking, the longest holiday period is from the end of July and throughout August, with an additional two weeks around Christmas and Easter. There are also "half-term" holidays of one or two weeks, usually falling in February, May and October.

Additionally, there are eight Bank Holidays in England throughout the year. Extra holidays are sometimes added for national events such as Royal weddings and funerals.

Make the most of England’s free attractions

If you’re exploring England on a budget, there are plentiful free attractions to enjoy. All national parks have free entry, as do most other natural attractions such as woodlands, country parks, lakes and beaches. Likewise, there are miles of public footpaths, bridleways, and long-distance walking and biking paths to enjoy free of charge across the country.

Many museums and art galleries offer free entry, and even the ones that don’t often have a monthly free-entry day. Churches and cathedrals are usually free to explore as well, although some ask for donations from visitors.

Get 2-for-1 on attractions with National Rail

The National Rail Days Out scheme offers 2-for-1 tickets at over 300 attractions in England when you travel by train. There’s a huge variety of attractions across the country, including aquariums, zoos, football grounds, museums, gardens, and cinemas. Simply show your train ticket on entry to receive the discount.

Join English Heritage and/or the National Trust

Many of England's top heritage properties, beauty spots and historic sites are managed by either the National Trust or English Heritage charities. Stonehenge and Dover Castle are two of the most famous English Heritage sites, while the National Trust manages over 500 gardens, nature reserves, and historic houses such as Agatha Christie’s former home Greenway House in Devon .

Both charities offer annual memberships allowing free entry to all attractions as well as free car parking at a number of locations. Both charities also offer temporary memberships for short-term visitors from overseas. These can be well worth purchasing if you plan on visiting several attractions.

Look for discounts for students, seniors, groups and families

Many attractions throughout England offer discounts to students, children (usually under 18s) and seniors (usually 60+). Some also offer cheaper packages for groups and families, so check the best options online when planning your trip.

Check online for discounts

Coupons and special offers are popular in England. If you’re visiting an attraction or a restaurant, check its social media pages for any current deals that may be running. Likewise, local Facebook Groups and newspapers can be good sources for news of special offers and discounts in the area.

You can also sign up for online deals websites to find discounts on days out, meals and more. Groupon and HotUKDeals are two popular websites for finding deals on UK travel.

Book rooms in budget hotels

Accommodation can be one of the biggest costs when traveling in England. The budget hotel chains Premier Inn , Travelodge and Holiday Inn Express offer decent hotel rooms (if a little bland) at affordable prices. Guesthouses and B&Bs are usually cheaper than hotels and often have a lot more character.

Hotels on the outskirts of towns and cities can be cheaper than those in the city center, but check that there are convenient public transport options before booking, as taking taxis will quickly mitigate those savings.

Remember that hostels aren’t just for backpackers

The Youth Hostels Association (YHA) has hostels across England, some of them in extraordinary buildings, including castles! These offer budget-friendly dormitory accommodation for backpackers, but there are many other options to suit all kinds of travelers. Groups can book an entire dorm – or even the whole property – and many hostels have private and family-sized rooms, camping pitches, cabins and even glamping.

Embrace the English caravan parks

Holiday parks with static caravan accommodation are popular throughout England, particularly around tourist hot spots on the coast or in the countryside. These can be a very affordable option, especially for groups or families, although prices rise significantly during the summer holidays. Many parks have facilities such as a pool, restaurants, shops and entertainment.

Pitchup  is a handy website to search and book holiday parks, caravans, campsites, and glamping sites across the UK. Keep in mind that some holiday parks can only be booked directly through the parks themselves.

A group of friends sat around a large table in a restaurant share a toast

Enjoy a good meal out on a budget

England’s reputation for high prices and bad cuisine is somewhat undeserved. There’s good food to be found across the country, from minimal-mile menus at country pubs to excellent seafood along the ample coastline . Food trucks are increasingly popular, especially in cities and tourist towns, and can be a great way to get a takeaway meal for less than £10. Speaking of takeaways, the famed British staple of fish and chips usually costs around £10, best eaten on the beach at sunset for a no-frills budget dinner.

For indoor dining, pubs are generally cheaper than restaurants and many offer very good food alongside local ales, ciders and other drinks. Look for gastro-pubs, where the emphasis is more on dining than drinking. Expect to pay around £12–20 for a main and even less if there’s a deal on.

Consider signing up for a Tastecard

You could also sign up for a Tastecard which offers dining discounts such as 2-for-1 meals at eateries all over the UK — including chains like Pizza Hut, Prezzo and Giraffe. Membership is £34.99 a year so this is probably only worth it during a long-term stay in England or if you plan to use the discount card a lot during your visit.

Stay in self-catered places and shop in budget supermarkets

Dining out is obviously going to eat into your budget. Consider opting for self-catering accommodation where you've got the facilities to store and prepare your own meals.

The cheapest supermarkets are Aldi and Lidl , although most supermarket brands usually have good special offers on. Supermarkets are also great places to pick up cheap lunches (many have a “meal deal” combo of a sandwich, side and drink) or put together a picnic to take with you while you’re exploring England.

Dine out on weekdays

At pubs and restaurants, weekdays are often the cheapest days to dine out. During the week, many establishments offer fixed-price set menus or deals such as 2-for-1 mains that won’t be found on weekends.

Are you ready to discover what are the costs of traveling in the UK?

With rolling countryside, millenniums of well-preserved history, and cosmopolitan cities, the United Kingdom is a travel destination like no other.

The weather sometimes lets it down – I’m writing this looking out of my window to a distinctly British drizzly day – but there are so many amazing things to see and do here, both indoors and outdoors, that it’s always worth a visit no matter how expensive a trip to the UK might be.

Aerial shot of London at night. Discover here all the information you need to know to travel in the United Kingdom.

One of the most important things to work out before a trip is its expected costs. The costs of traveling in the UK can be high compared to other destinations, but there are ways to reduce them if you want to travel to the UK on a budget.

In this post, we’ll look at UK travel costs, and I’ll give you some local tips for saving a few quid (that’s British for pounds!). Below you will find a breakdown of UK travel prices, from flights to the United Kingdom, local transportation, hotel, and attractions costs.

How much does it cost to travel to the UK?

Traveling to the UK is relatively affordable. If you’re already in Europe, there are budget airlines flying to London airports from most countries.

Ryanair and EasyJet are the most popular budget carriers, and while they are cheap, do be aware of hidden costs. For example, RyanAir will charge you if you don’t check in online and download your boarding pass beforehand.

Flights to the UK from within Europe can cost you anything from £6 (yes, really) to £300, depending on where you are flying to and the time of year.

There are also buses serving London from cities in France , Germany, the Netherlands , Belgium, and other destinations – check out Megabus or Flixbus. These are generally the same price as the cheapest budget airline tickets. You can search for buses to the UK here .

From further afield, it’s obviously pricier – but you can get some good deals. There is a lot of competition between airlines as many long-haul carriers serve London Heathrow Airport, so you’ll generally be able to find a deal from major airlines. Before, I’ve paid £400 for a round trip to Guatemala via New York, and $550 for a round trip to Asia, flying out to Cebu in the Philippines via Hong Kong and flying back from Bangkok .

We recommend use Skyscanner  to search for the best flights to London or any other city in the UK.

Costs of traveling in the UK – prices and how to get around

If you are traveling to the UK on a budget, avoid the British rail network at all costs.

It is expensive, and while some new modern trains are coming out, you will be disappointed if you are an avid train traveler. However, trains are the quickest way of getting around, so if you aren’t on a budget, you might find yourself favoring this mode of travel.

A return train ticket from London to Manchester could cost anything from £40 -£120, travel from London to Edinburgh is £80-£170 or maybe even more, and London to Bristol is between £30-£60. Even if you’re just making day trips from London, you can still easily spend $50 on a day’s transport.

However, it’s not all bad news. Coaches in the UK are affordable and reasonably comfortable. They do take a lot longer, but the savings can be astronomical. Definitely, the cheapest way to travel around the UK.

For example, traveling from London to Bristol can cost under £6 for a return and go up to £25 ish, and London to Manchester return can be from £12 – £40. Lots of locals get coaches – I personally can never justify spending more than fifty quid on a train!

You can use the Bookaway website to check the prices of trains and buses in the UK, choose the best deals, and book in advance. By doing this, you can keep your UK travel budget under control, and you can calculate how much you will spend on transportation even before traveling there.

Car rental is another option. Although the UK is a small country, some places aren’t that well connected, and if you want to get out to the countryside, you’ll save a considerable amount of time by renting a car.

UK car rental prices start at around £12 for a day. It’s a good idea to pay extra for insurance, and of course, petrol (around £40-50 for a full tank in most cars) is extra. You can find the best UK car rental deals on RentalCars.com (click here) .

In the end, it all depends on your itinerary and the places you want to visit when traveling in England , Wales, or Scotland. Once you have mapped your destination becomes easier to choose the best or the cheapest mode of transportation.

Don’t forget to buy your travel insurance before traveling to the UK!! We use   SafetyWing or Heymond ,  just click on the name of the company and get your quote now. If you need more information, read our Travel Insurance Guide here .

Prices of tourist attractions in the UK – what to do and how to save

There are, of course, plenty of things that you can spend money on in the UK. However, there are lots of free things to do in the UK as well. I’ll start with these and then go into some of the pricier UK tourist attractions!

  • Many museums, particularly in London, are completely free. The Natural History Museum is a favorite, as are the Victoria and Albert Museum and the British Museum. Read our guide to free things to do in London here .
  • National parks are free in the UK. You can drop into the visitor’s center and get some information about local walks and things to do in the area.
  • Some attractions in famous destinations are also free, like the National Railway Museum in romantic York . You just need to search and you’ll find plenty of free attractions.
  • If you base yourself in a town near the beach or other natural attractions, you might be able to do hikes and explore the surrounding nature. For example, there are loads of things to do in Exmouth, Devon , that don’t cost a dime; here, you can walk along the famous Jurassic Coast, explore the Exe Estuary, hike in moorland and enjoy the beach!
  • When traveling around the coast, you can do many water sports and even surf without spending that much. For inspiration, check out these 15 beaches in Newquay, Cornwall . There you can surf, go hiking or simply relax by the beach.

There are, however, plenty of attractions that cost money.

The National Trust is in charge of historic houses and other properties all over the UK, and entry to these costs £10 – £20. If historical places are your thing, these properties are normally managed by the English Heritage (Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland have their own programs) and cost £5-£15 for entry. Check out this incredible National Trust Sites in the Cotswolds , and how to save when visiting them.

The cost of visiting a museum in the UK can be anywhere from £2 up to £25 – the pricier ones are private museums that have a certain theme or ‘experience’, such as the SS Great Britain in Bristol, which has been completely renovated to mimic what it was like when it took British migrants to Australia during the Gold Rush.

While there are plenty of free things to do in London, some of the most famous attractions – the London Eye , the Tower of London , and Westminster Abbey, all cost between £15-£30. These costs can add up if you are visiting a few, so if you are planning to visit more than 3 attractions in London, a cheaper alternative is to buy the London Pass or a tour ticket that combines many attractions like this one .

London Pass is a great option for those who want to see a lot without expending much, as it covers over 80 attractions and places to visit in London. You can choose between the 1, 2, 3, 6, or 10 Days Pass, the prices start at £79 and go up to £149.

Book your London Pass in advance here and start saving for your UK trip right now.

However, what you spend on British attractions really depends on your budget and style. You could spend two weeks here and not spend any money on attractions, or you could spend over £100 per day.

A sandwich, fries and beer on a table at a pub. If you are planning a trip to England, you will find here a lot of useful information about UK prices for food, accommodation and transportation.

UK food prices

The cost of food in the UK is another thing that can be cheap or astronomically expensive. A fancy dinner in London with a couple of drinks could easily be upwards of £150 – or you could spend less than £10 on street food at one of London’s food markets.

A dinner out at a typical restaurant will generally cost you £10-£30. Of course, every extra glass of wine you have will add more to that bill!

If you’re visiting the UK on a budget but still want to eat out, consider going to Wetherspoons. These pubs are in every city, and while they aren’t exactly fine dining, they have a huge menu, decent food, and excellent prices. Here, dinner will cost you much less than £10 – and the drinks are cheap too!

For lunches, we Brits love a meal deal. You can get these in any supermarket (Sainsbury’s, Tesco, and Morrisons are the main ones) or in the chemist Boots. Here, you can put together your own combo of a sandwich/ salad/ pasta pot, a snack, and a drink. These generally cost around £3, and are a great way to cut costs while exploring a city!

Accommodation in the UK – hotel prices

Hotels in the UK cities start at around £50 and go up to about £300 – of course, you get what you pay for!

The cheaper hotels are generally either small guesthouses, which can be really lovely, or chains such as Ibis, Novotel, or Holiday Inn. On the other end, you can pamper yourself in nice hotels and spas in Edinburgh and other famous destinations in the UK.

You will find below two links, one for luxury stays and another for cheap accommodation in the UK. Click on them, and you will have an idea of the hotel prices in the UK per city, so you can plan your itinerary according to your budget and how much you want to spend on UK hotels.

You can find hotels at cheaper rates in smaller towns (sometimes the most budget-friendly thing to do is stay outside of a city and travel in), and the smaller, family-run places often include breakfast.

Click here for the best Bed & Breakfast in the UK here .

Hostels are available in the cities – a bed in a dorm room can cost between £10-£30 per night, so it’s a significant saving compared to hotels! Keep in mind that in London, hostel prices can be a bit higher.

You can find the best hostels in the UK here.

Airbnb is another good platform for booking accommodation, and there are amazing options for Airbnb in the UK . Another option is to rent an entire apartment or house, which might be cheaper than booking hotel rooms or hostel beds. If you are traveling alone you can rent a room in someone’s house, it’s cheap, you can meet local people, and save by cooking for yourself.

If you don’t mind braving Britain’s unpredictable weather, camping is also an option. Campsite pitches cost around £20 per night.

Holiday parks also have self-contained static caravans to rent – these are expensive in the summer but extremely cheap from October – April. Prices start from around £150 for a week! However, you will usually need your own vehicle to reach campsites and caravan sites.

UK trip cost per day- How much money do I need to take to the UK?

It’s challenging to put together a UK daily budget because, as you can see, there are ways to both save and spend a lot of money. I’ll give it my best shot, though!

If you’re traveling to the UK on a budget, staying in hostels or camping, eating meal deals/ Wetherspoons food or cooking yourself, and visiting free attractions, you could get by on £30 per day – or maybe slightly less if you’re savvy.

Daily cost of traveling in the UK on a budget – £30 per person.

A mid-range budget would include a car rental, staying in guesthouses, and visiting most of the main attractions, this would cost £80-£120 per day. (Of course, if you share hotel rooms/ hire cars with one or more people, that divides the cost!)

Daily cost of traveling in the UK on a mid-range budget –  £80-£120 per person.

A luxury budget would involve staying at the best hotels, seeing all of the attractions in the United Kingdom, and traveling by car or train, and would be anywhere from £150+ per day.

Daily cost of traveling in the UK on a luxury budget –  £150+ per person.

Hopefully, this guide has helped you work out the costs of traveling in the UK and help you devise your own plan depending on your budget and travel tastes! BACKPACKING EUROPE: How to Plan Your Dream Euro Tour on a Budget

BACKPACKING EUROPE: How to Plan Your Dream Euro Tour on a Budget

By continuing to read this article, you agree to double-check with the concerned establishments for the latest updates.

I’m writing this at four in the morning. Wrapped in a thick blanket and sipping a cup of tea, I have given up on catching some sleep tonight. I seem to have left my mind in Europe, unable to adjust. Every time I close my eyes, I am bombarded with an endless succession of wonderful memories from our Euro trip. I still can’t believe two months went by that quickly. It feels like it was just yesterday. It’s been a week but I still look at prices and count in euro. It’s been a week but it’s like I could still sense the sweet scent of truffle and waffles. Water tastes like beer. Or wine.

It’s been a week since we wrapped up our two-month backpacking journey around Europe, the first of three Euro trips that we’ve been planning for the next couple of years in an effort to visit all countries in Europe. On this leg, we visited 16 countries. It took careful, meticulous planning because we wanted to do as much as we could within the short time the embassy allowed.

As soon as we announced we were in Europe, our inbox was flooded with inquiries asking for more details. We promised to share our full itinerary and cost in a blog post. Well, ladies and gentlemen, this post is NOT it. Not yet. We’ll share the details of our entire two months in another post soon. In the meantime, we’ll tell you HOW we planned our trip and HOW you can plan yours, instead of simply posting our itinerary. Here are the reasons for that:

  • We all have different dreams and tastes. There are items in our bucket list that may not be in yours. There are experiences we would love to try but you wouldn’t even dare.
  • We all have different budget and time restrictions. We were allowed to stay in Europe by the German embassy for 60 days. Initially, we wanted to stay longer —- our original plan is 3 months! —- but our budget forced us to trim it down to just 2.
  • If you have a bigger or smaller budget and your dream destinations vary greatly from ours, there really is no point in simply sharing our itinerary. Besides, planning a trip to Europe goes beyond simply building an itinerary. There are a lot of things to consider. The cost of living, climate, language, and the culture in general vary from country to country, which will all affect your preparation.

Anyway, here’s the method we took in order to successfully fulfill our dream European adventure, presented as a step-by-step guide!

WHAT'S COVERED IN THIS GUIDE?

1. Determine your budget.

First things first: How much is your budget?

Your budget will dictate how long you can stay in Europe, where you will be staying, and what places you can visit.

Let’s assume that you have a P135,000 budget for this trip.

Immediately, let’s subtract P30,000 from your budget for your airfare. Trust me, you can find roundtrip fares for many major cities in Europe for less than P30,000 if you book in advance.

2. Determine WHEN you want to go.

The summer months of June-August are considered high season (peak season) in most parts of Europe. Because of the sunshiny skies, it is the most touristy time of the year. Hence, prices go up! If you’re on a budget, you might want to avoid this and consider the shoulder months of September-November instead.

But the weather isn’t the only thing you need to take into account. Is there any event you would like to experience but can only be enjoyed at certain times of the year? If you would like to experience Oktoberfest, go to Munich in mid-September (but expect the hotel and tour rates to skyrocket)! If you want to see the Northern Lights in the Nordic countries, visit between mid-September to mid-March but consider the moon’s brightness too for greater chances of seeing the aurora.

If you have events you MUST MUST MUST experience, use it as your starting point and work from there.

If you don’t have any, then you can be much more flexible.

3. List down all your must-visits !

Are there any destinations you’ve always dreamed of visiting? Is Paris something you can’t miss? Did you make a vow to attend the papal mass at the Vatican? Are you a big fan of the Sound of Music and you just NEED to see the locations in person?

For this exercise, let’s call them “must-visits.” These are your non-negotiables. Meaning, whatever happens, you HAVE TO make a stop at these cities. These are the reasons you’re traveling to Europe in the first place.

europe-key-cities

List them all down. Don’t edit it yet. It’s easy to travel within Europe, so just write them down and we’ll figure it out later.

For example, let’s say that here are your must-visits:

4. Find out lodging costs.

Cost of accommodations varies greatly from one city to another. For example, hotels in Prague are unbelievably cheap while Reykjavik seems like it wants your soul with your money. There are A LOT of cheap lodging options in Europe. It doesn’t always have to be a full-service hotel. There are no-frills hotels, hostels, dorms, and AirBnB options!

At this point, you should already know if you’re traveling alone or part of a group. This will affect your expenses and accommodation choices significantly.

  • If you’re traveling alone and you’re concerned about the budget, consider booking dorm beds. It’s waaay cheaper than booking a private room. (Even single rooms can be pricey.) It’s also a great way to meet other travelers and make new friends.
  • If you’re a pair, you may consider booking two dorm beds or a private room, depends on the situation. If you’re a duo wanting to meet people, the dorm is still a good choice. If you’re a couple on a romantic getaway or a honeymoon, my god, please get a private room (haha!). Note, though, that in many hostels, the bedrooms may be private but the toilet and bath are sometimes shared. Check the arrangement before booking.
  • If you’re a group of three, know that Triple Rooms are not uncommon in Europe. You may also check their policy on extra person on Double/Twin rooms. It’s a great way to save!

Since by now you have an idea of your travel dates, it’s best to go to Booking.com and check hotel rates per night for your must-visit’s. (Why Booking.com? I’ll explain later below.)

DON’T BOOK YET . Just check the rates first. We’re only budgeting at this point and figuring out the allocations.

But to give you an idea, here are the price ranges for some key cities in Europe for a September-December stay.

CITY DORM (EUR Per Bed) DOUBLE/TWIN (EUR Per Room) Amsterdam 16-55 40+ Barcelona 10-45 44+ Copenhagen 25-30 56+ Florence 10-30 30+ Munich 14-30 51+ Paris 20-25 45+ Prague 5-10 18+ Reykjavik 30-60 79+ Rome 9-25 20+ Zurich 40-60 75+

Decide on how long you would want to stay at each of these stops. Let’s assume you’re staying at each of your must-visits for 5 days and 4 nights and you’re traveling with a friend. That means staying for a total of 12 nights in your must-visit cities, and dividing the room cost by 2.

Using our example above, the following will be your accommodations expenses:

CITY COST PER NIGHT (EUR) NO. OF NIGHTS TOTAL COST (EUR) Paris 55 4 220 Florence 50 4 200 Prague 30 4 120 TOTAL EUR 540 TOTAL PER PERSON EUR 270

That’s PHP 15,000 per person for 12 nights!

Again, these are just for the purpose of budgeting. You can find more affordable options. (AirBnB provides cheaper options!)

Okay, let’s do a recap: Airfare: P30,000 Hotels so far: P15,000 Total so far: P45,000

THEPOORTRAVELERKLOOK

4. Plot your route.

It’s time to build our itinerary!

First, get a map of Europe and mark all your must-visits. In our case, we have marked Paris, Prague and Florence.

Then, look at the nearby areas. Are there any other places that you would want to see? Let’s call these “nice-to-have’s.” They’re not really your must-visit places, but it would be great if you get to see them too if your time and budget allow. If not, it’s okay too. Not the end of the world for you.

I highly recommend considering cities that are along the route connecting your must-visits. For example, if Amsterdam and Paris are in your must-visit list, you’ll find that Brussels (in Belgium) sits comfortably in between! If Copenhagen and Prague are your must-visits, know that Berlin is smack in the middle!

You may also consider going on a day tour to another city. If Vienna is a must-visit for you, it wouldn’t hurt to also check out Bratislava, Slovakia, or Budapest, Hungary. The beauty of this is that you don’t have your bulky, heavy luggage with you.

Let’s use our Paris-Prague-Florence example. To get to Florence from Prague by train, you might want to stop in Vienna, Munich or Zurich! Let’s stay that you spend 3 nights each in Munich and Zurich. And since you’re already in Florence, why not end the trip in Rome? Flights to Manila are cheaper from Rome because it’s a major hub.

Here’s our lodging cost so far:

CITY COST PER ROOM (EUR) NO. OF NIGHTS TOTAL COST (EUR) Paris 55 4 220 Prague 30 4 120 Munich 60 3 180 Zurich 75 3 225 Florence 50 4 200 Rome 35 4 140 TOTAL EUR 1085 TOTAL PER PERSON EUR 542.5

That’s P29,000 per person!

Time for another recap: Airfare: P30,000 Hotels so far: P29,000 Total cost so far: P59,000

5. Reserve hotel/hostel rooms.

If you’re happy with your itinerary, it’s time to reserve the rooms. RESERVE, don’t book yet.

This is why I highly recommend BOOKING.COM . They let you reserve rooms for a long time without charging you a cent. (Just choose properties that are marked with FREE CANCELLATION.) Remember, you don’t have a visa yet. This gives you the flexibility to cancel in case your application get denied or in case you change your mind.

During our trip, we made a number of changes to our itinerary and we were able to modify our bookings without additional cost.

When choosing accommodations, always check the location. You’ll be surprised that there are A LOT of affordable options that are in the city center! Of our 12 hotels on our Euro Trip, only one was far from all the action and that’s because we booked too late (Hello, Zurich!). It’s also wise to pick hotels near the train station.

6. Apply for a visa.

Okay, the hard part: getting a visa.

If you’re traveling within the Schengen Area, you will need a visa.

The Schengen Visa itself is a complicated animal. Let me explain: The Schengen Visa is a travel document that allows the holder to enter any of the 26 states that are part of the Schengen agreement. Think of it as an almost all-access pass to many countries in Europe, eliminating the immigration borders within the Schengen zone and the hassle of having to apply for a visa for each individual country. These are the countries who are part of the Schengen Zone:

But hold your horses. You can’t apply just anywhere. You need to figure out which embassy to lodge your application, and it will depend on the purpose of your trip or your overall European itinerary. The rule is, you should apply at the embassy of the country where you will stay the longest.

In our sample itinerary so far, we will be staying in Italy the longest. This requires you to apply at the Italian Embassy.

All good? Good.

But here’s the thing. The Italian Embassy, along with the Spanish Embassy, is notorious for being extra strict. In my travel circles, the Dutch and German Embassies are widely regarded as the most forgiving and most considerate.

Many applicants would deliberately modify their itineraries in order to stay longer in the Netherlands or Germany. Do I recommend that? Sure! They are beautiful countries! It’s up to you if you will follow the itinerary you submitted to the embassy or not, should it get approved. But my personal recommendation is to be honest to avoid any complications. If you’re applying at the French Embassy, stay the longest in France. Bear in mind that you will be interviewed during the application and they will know if you’re lying. Still, if you change your mind after you get the visa, no one’s stopping you from deviating from your itinerary a little bit.

More info about applying for a Schengen Visa below:

  • via French Embassy
  • via German Embassy
  • via Greek Embassy
  • via Italian Embassy

If you’re visiting countries outside Schengen zone, make sure you have the corresponding visa. Some countries will accept your Schengen visa as long as it allows you multiple entry. Always check with the embassy of that country.

If we stick to our sample itinerary and apply at the Italian Embassy, here are additional fees we need to take into account:

Visa fee : EUR 60 (PHP 3200) Service fee : EUR 26 (PHP 1400) Travel Insurance : EUR (PHP 1500)

Sub-total of all Visa Fees: P6,100

Time for another recap: Airfare: P30,000 Hotels so far: P29,000 Visa fees: P6,100 Total so far: 65,100

7. Book flights, trains, and hotels.

Once your visa is approved, book the flights and hotels that you had reserved!

You might also need to book additional flights. Traveling by air within Europe is cheaper than you think. You’ll find Paris-Rome flights for only P1000 (via Ryan Air), Paris-Barcelona for P1700 (via RyanAir), and Paris-Prague for only P3000 (Czech Airlines). You just need to book in advance.

Consider trains and buses too! In Europe, I prefer the train to the plane for many reasons. First, I don’t need to show up at least an hour before. Second, I don’t need to check in baggage and wait for pickup. Lastly, most main train stations are located at the heart of the city. All these saves me time, effort, and money.

In our sample itinerary, let’s assume that we’re flying from Paris to Prague and then take the train all the way to Rome, making stops along the way.

ROUTE MODE COST (EUR) Paris to Prague Plane 57 Prague to Munich Train 15 Munich to Zurich Train 39 Zurich to Florence Train 28 Florence to Rome Train 19

Subtotal of additional transportation expenses: 158 Euro or P8320

It’s also time to book some attractions and tours. I say SOME because you don’t need to book everything. Book only those that require advance booking like the Eiffel Tower, Vatican tickets, and food tours. For the others, you’ll most likely find cheaper tours when you get to that destination.

Time for another recap: Airfare: P30,000 Hotels so far: P29,000 Visa fees: P6,100 Transportation Expenses: P8320 Total so far: 65,100

8. Allocate money for food and tours.

Food and tours will take the biggest fraction of your budget. To keep our expenses low, what I do is follow this rule:

Keep daily FOOD expenses below EUR 20, and tour expenses below EUR 20.

That’s actually way above our actual cost per day, but it’s better to have a good allowance for possible overspending than to run short.

One of the first things we do when we arrive in the city is hit the supermarket and shop for food: bread, biscuits, fruits, and drinks. It’s so much cheaper than eating out. Your EUR10 here can last for days, even in expensive cities like Zurich, Copenhagen, and Reykjavik. In Paris, there are places where you can buy a whole chicken for EUR5! Yet, we still want to try traditional food! So here’s how we do it:

If you decide to splurge on dinner one day and spend more than EUR20, avoid eating out the next day.

The same applies to activities. The EUR20 per day budget should already include transportation (if any) and miscellaneous expenses (bottle of water, snacks, etc). If you really want to save up, you can skip the guided tours and just do it on your own. There are several city apps that have self-guided walking trails. You may also join FREE walking tours so you only have to worry about the tip.

BUT we like guided tours! It’s the best way to appreciate the sites we visit. We love hearing anecdotes and funny stories about places and important people that we would never have read online or in textbooks. So we follow the same rule:

If you decide to take a guided tour that costs more than EUR 20 one day, do a self-guided walking tour the next day.

This rule has kept us afloat during our stay while still enjoying the best of what the city has to offer.

Again, that’s EUR 20 (PHP1100) per day on food and EUR20 on tours.

So if you’re staying in Europe for 23 days, here’s how it looks: Airfare: P30,000 Hotels so far: P29,000 Visa fees: P6,100 Transportation Expenses: P8320 Food Expenses: P24,200 Tour Expenses: P24,200 TOTAL: P121,820

That gives you an additional P13,180 allowance to cover incidental expenses, city taxes (Rome and Florence) and others we might have missed.

So here’s our final sample itinerary:

DAY STOP ACTIVITY 0 En Route Manila to Paris 1 Paris Le Marais to Latin Quarter, Eiffel Tower 2 Paris Louvre 3 Paris Versailles (Self guided) 4 Paris Champs Elysees (Self-guided) 5 Prague En Route, Check in, Free Time 6 Prague Walking Tour (Self-guided) and River Cruise 7 Prague World War II & Communism Tour 8 Prague Choose another Tour 9 Munich En Route, Check in, Free Time 10 Munich Neuschwanstein Castle (Self-guided) 11 Munich Dachau Tour 12 Zurich En Route, Check In, Free time 13 Zurich Old Town Walking Tour (Self-guided) 14 Zurich Choose another tour 15 Florence En Route, Check in, Free Time 16 Florence Walking Tour (Self-guided), Museums 17 Florence Venice Day Tour 18 Florence Choose another tour 19 Rome En Route, Check in, Free Time 20 Rome Vatican Tours 21 Rome Ancient Rome + Colosseum Walking Tour 22 Rome Pasalubong! (If you have leftover cash) 23 En Route Back to Manila

This is just a sample itinerary to demonstrate the process I detailed above. You can use the same process to come up with your own itinerary based on your own requirements, needs, and restrictions.

More Tips for the Poor Traveler

  • You can still reduce the cost significantly by pulling a DIY (self-guided) for tours and spending much less on food . But again, we love trying local food and learning from our guides and that’s what we recommend.
  • Visit cheaper destinations . In general, Northern Europe is the most expensive while Eastern Europe is the cheapest. If you have a much smaller budget, head to the eastern side of the sub-continent!
  • Download city apps . Like I said above, most key cities in Europe have an app that will help you explore the city more efficiently. These may be subway apps or walking trail apps.
  • Hit the grocery at least once per stop . Eating out in Europe is expensive. The cheapest is to shop for supplies on your first day to cover breakfast and another meal. Eat out only once per day, at most.
  • Get a credit card . You’ll be surprised that most transactions in many European cities are done via credit card, although cash is still accepted. Having a credit card not only allows you to do online transactions, it also gives you a backup in case you run short on cash.
  • Avoid money changers . In our 2 months in Europe, we found that the best way to get local currency is by withdrawing from ATMs.

Great tips! Planning a trip to Europe on a budget is doable, but you will have to plan much more. Even though, that’s the only way I could afford all the trips. ;)

Jennifer Berroya

Goooaaallss! Haaay its really my dream na makapag travel sa Europe haaay. How long bago po kayo nakapag save ng budget for your Euro trip Sirs?

Jed

Thank you for this guide! Time to make this Europe trip a reality! :)

Yosh Dimen

Have fun planning! :)

Grace

Hi, i was wondering if you can recommend any prepaid sims just for data use when travelling around europe? Can 1 sim cover different euro countries?

Marielle Olitoquit

Thank you for this info. Very helpful. Im planning to travel Amsterdam – Brussels – Luxembourg. Do you have tips on what to do in Luxembourg? I cant find that much travel blog about this country. Also hpw about the internet? Does Europe have pocket wifi rental service?

ivy

Thank your for this guide. May I regarding withdrawing money from ATMs, do you have any issue using debit card with 6-pin digits only? Thanks. :)

Hi Ivy, yung saken 6-digit pin. Wala naman ako naaalala na naging issue na pin-related.

Patrick

Hello! Planning to go to Europe Next July 2019.. What is a good time to apply for a shengen visa?

3 months before.

Jessica

Hi Yoshke Just new to your channel.Im planning to visit europe for 2 weeks. Can you suggest an itinerary for country Paris,Barcelona,Florence/Venice,Prague,We just want to see the major attractions And accommodation you can recommend.Restaurants/cafe. You’re video is a lot of help like us traveling first time in Europe.

Hi Jessica, your destinations are far apart so if you want to save on time (and money), you can just fly with a low cost airline. Regarding itinerary, where are you flying from? Do you already have an entry point/exit point?

For the accommodations, you may check out this post: https://www.thepoortraveler.net/2016/12/where-to-stay-cheap-in-europe-hotel-review/

TJ

Hey Yoshke,

I’m thinking if I should get Eurail passes. I know this is not the cheapest choice but can you recommend some train carriers that offer the cheapest rides like what you mentioned in the article?

Hi TJ, what country?

Kb

Same question. My main itinerary is France, Belgium, Amsterdam, Switzerland and Italy (Rome and Venice). Any suggestions regarding transport among these countries?

Hi Kb, Paris to Belgium and Amsterdam, Thalys is the most popular choice. It’s high speed and very comfortable, even the standard seats. If you’re going to Brussels, there is a low-cost train called Izy but I haven’t tried that.

Switzerland to Venice… where in Switzerland? If Zurich, there used to be a direct EuroCity train from Zurich to Venice. But I’m not sure if it’s still operational. Most of the journeys I find make a stop either in Milan or Munich. Travel time from Milan: 1h40; Fare from €9.90.

Venice to Rome, high speed trains take 3 hours and 45 minutes. It’s usually either Frecciargento or Frecciarossa (Trenitalia). Fares start at €19.90.

Dessa

Hello, I just want to ask regarding your health insurance which one of the requirements in getting the schengen visa. May i know the details which company offers the cheapest? Thanks :)

Hi Dessa, I’m not sure which company offers the cheapest but I got mine from Pacific Cross.

Carla

Hi. When applying for a visa do you need to reserve tickets leaving and returning to Manila or all tickets (trains, buses, planes) when transferring to other countries covered by the Schengen Visa? We’re starting from Greece then our last stop will be Germany before going back to the Philippines.

Hi Carla, it depends on the specific embassy. At which embassy will you be lodging your application?

We’ll apply at the German Embassy. We’ll stay there the longest. Our route will be Manila-Athens-Rome-Paris-Berlin- Manila.

Hi Carla, based on my and my friend’s experience, di kami nagsubmit ng transfers. Wala namang naging problem. Di ko lang sure if okay lang sya in general or natapat lang kami sa medyo maluwag na nag-assess/interview.

K-anne

Can you give me a list of budget airlines to Europe aside from scoot?

Hi K-anne, just use flight comparison websites/apps. The cheapest is not necessarily from a budget airline. When we traveled to Europe, the cheapest we found was offered by Qatar Airways! So be sure to check even full-service airlines because you’ll never know.

Kat

Hi! Thanks for this useful guide.

Your 250K budget, was that for one person for two months?

Yep, 1 person. But we were really on budget. We stayed in hostels and rarely ate out. :)

Thanks for the reply. =)

Gino

Hello, have you shared your itinerary for the 16 countries you visited? I’m sorry i cant find it in your site. You said you will share it soon But couldn’t find it.

No problem!

Glenda

Hi.. maybi ask lng po kung pagkukuha ng visa need ba magpresent ng show money? Tska ung tinatawag na mga rootedness?thanks

Maj

Hi there! In applying for VISA, did you already book your roundtrip flights? I read somewhere that this is not recommended and I’m so paranoid because we already booked ours. Thank you!

Hi Maj, no, I applied for a visa first before booking the tickets. But I submitted flight reservations.

Luz

Hi Yoshke! I’ve always booked flights in advance whenever I traveled (because I always booked sale flights), and this might be the first time I will submit just a flight reservation as you recommended.

I’ll be touring Central Europe sometime in October 2019, entering through Berlin,. Do you have any ball park figure at how much the plane tickets would cost me (roundrip Manila-Berlin or Manila-Berlin and Budapest-Manila) if I book my plane ticket sometime in July (after I get the visa). I previously traveled across Italy and got my roundtrip tickets via Rome for about 490USD via Qatar Airways. I was just wondering how much more I may need to prepare if I will be booking just 3 months before the trip. Also, which airline would you recommend if I will be booking the flight in July. Thanks!

Better search na lang using Skyscanner for the latest rates. Medyo tricky kasi yung case mo kasi baka pumatak sa Oktoberfest yung flight mo. (I remember when I was planning my trip, nung nagtry ako magbook ng hotels in Germany during Oktoberfest, sobrang mahal. Not sure if ganun din ang flights.)

Thanks for the response. And oh no! Hahaha. Just hoping we get approved para di sayang tickets.

Hello Again.. You said Italian embassy is extra strict.. what do you mean by that? compared to other embassies. Do they ask for a lot of documents? Thanks in advance.

Hi Patrick, they have a high rejection rate.

Arthur

Hi, This is very informative. I just checked Air France and their trip from NL to CDG is 7k cheaper than what have you posted. I’d like to pattern my tour with yours, + Amsterdam and the Netherlands (though still have to figure out if its possible). btw, what is your airline going back to Manila from Rome. Many thanks

Hi Arthur, the itinerary here is just a sample. In reality, our trip was much, much longer.

But our flight back to Manila was with Qatar Airways.

Opps. Amsterdam isin the Netherlands. my bad.

CJ Lee

Thank you for this info. It would be very helpful for me. Maybe, you can also help me. I’m also planning 2-week trips to Europe. How much do you think I would spend all in? Thanks for the help.

Hi CJ, it’s very hard for me to estimate how much you will be spending because, as said in the article, it depends on your route (countries to be visited) and your travel style.

patrick

Hello do I need to book already train rides or flights? for example, from venice to paris via easy jet? bec. these websites does not allow cancellation of booking.

Depende sa kung anong embassy ka apply. Pero usually, nirerequire din un ng most embassies.

Alex

Hi Just a clarification, you said you went on a 2 month trip and spent 250k but im confused cause you also laid out on the itinerary that it was only a 23 days but already spent 125k How much was your budget for the whole 2 month trip really

Hi Alex, like I said, the itinerary and budget in this post are just samples, not the actual cost, just to show my planning process. The budget in this post is padded and rounded off.

In reality, I stayed in Europe for 2 months and spent only 250K.

Karla Jacosalem

Your post is really helpful. Planning to do a DIY trip too. Can you share your itinerary? What mode of transportation did you use the most from one country to another?

Kim

I’m a huge fan of you guys! I’m a solo female traveller and your site has really helped me a lot and kept me alive. I’m planning my first trip to Europe but I’m a little afraid because I’ll be so far from home. In north america at least i had some family but in Europe I really don’t know anyone. How do you get around from one tourist site to another? Did you encounter racism like people spitting on you and stuff?

Between cities, we traveled either by train or by plane (longer distances). But within a city, we usually either joined group tours or walked on our own.

We never experienced any form of racism during the trip. We were put on the spot because of the PH president many times but nothing race-motivated. :)

Thanks for your reply. Keep up the great work!

Frances

Hello po. May I ask if you’ve already shared your actual full itinerary and cost? Thank you po.

Ophe

Anong tour company ang inavail mo while you’re in Eu. Thank you :)

Nyleva22

Hi. Just wondering if saan pedeng makabili ng sim card?

Hi Nyvela, for local data SIM, usually sa mga telco branches/stores. For example, when we were in Italy, we went to a Vodafone branch. There are also SIM available on Klook but make sure there are pickup option in the airport where you will land.

LA

Thanks for the informative post! I hope I can travel to Europe too!

Ronaldo Armildez

Thank you for this. May I ask if your air ticket is round trip MNL-CDG-MNL? From your itenerary, you exit port is Rome. Thanks

Best if hindi roundtrip yung ticket. In our case, nung first time namin, MNL-CDG tapos FCO-MNL.

Kate

Hello Yoshke! Can you please share how much yung one way ticket price nyo on MNL-CDG and FCO-MNL? I would like to use this as a baseline.

Hi Kate, it was around P32,000 (Qatar Airways). We actually saw P28,000 tickets before but then the fare went up by the time the visa was released.

Thank you for the info y prompt response, Yosh. Regards

Katrina

Hi! Is it okay to change plans and accommodations after getting the schengen visa?

Hi Katrina.

Yes, that’s fine. However, my only guidance is to have the proof that you will stay longer in the country that gave you your visa because you’ll never know when Immigration Officers will ask for it.

Okay, thank you!! So I can just cancel my accommodation bookings after getting thru the immigration office? Also, can I stay longer than planned? I asked for a 39-day single entry visa and I was given a 54-day multiple entry visa. So im planning of using up the extra days granted to me.

Hi Katrina, as far as I know, yes, as long as you don’t exceed the validity period and allowed length of stay.

By the way, which embassy? Kasi ang French Embassy minsan asks that you return to the embassy after the trip for verification. Pero most other embassies, wala paki.

My point of entry is Austria and point of exit is Czech Republic.

Katrina

Austrian embassy. My only concern is the number of stay indicated in my visa is “39” pero they gave me a visa valid from March 15 to May 05. Am i supposed to be there lang talaga for 39 days within those dates given to me?

If the visa states that you are only allowed 39 DAYS, then you can only stay for 39 days even if the visa is still within the validity period.

Restless Pinay

Thank you so much for this love. However, i have one q. are you using an ATM of a philippine bank> and which one is it?

Grace

Hi I would like to ask what Credit card are being accepted there?

Jessie

Question po, if i will be granted a visa thru german embassy, but my point of entry is France, will i havr a problem in the immigration? Will stay longer in germany and exit point too.

Happened to me once. I applied via German Embassy but I entered via Paris CDG Airport. Didn’t have any problem. My first trip, I had a French Schengen Via, I entered via Amsterdam. No issues. My last trip, had an Italian visa, entered via Athens. No issues. Actually, out of my Euro trips, once lang nagmatch ung entry point and ung visa provider. Afaik, yung longest stay talaga ang nagma-matter, not the point of entry.

Jonah

Hi. Im just wondering if your airline ticket as advertised was from CDO to Paris, Paris to CDO? What if your flying back to CDO from other country different from your 1st destination country? is P30K RT ticket possible?

Hi Jonah, not sure about CDO. We only checked flights from Manila when we booked.

Roy Sabalbaro

Hello po, yun flight example nyo po sa taas round trip po yun?

Deng Gonzales

Thank you for your blog and your guides. Very helpful. Just a question, hope you can help. We applied for Schengen Visa in Switzerland Embassy here in Manila. Since it will not be the last country in Europe I will visit, is it okay to start in France and end in Rome? Switzerland in the middle of the trip?

Hi Deng! I think so po. 3 out of the 4 Euro backpacking trips po namin so far, nasa gitna ng itinerary yung country that granted us the visa. :)

beeone

Hello anong company po Schengen insurance nyo?

Grace

Hi Yoshke! May I ask if you used a Eurail pass during your EU trip? If yes, is it worth it?

On my second Euro trip, yes, we used a Eurail pass. It was worth it because we had an extremely hectic itinerary then and we really used trains a lot. But on our 3rd and 4th tours, our itinerary didn’t really call for a pass. I guess it really depends on your iti and the time of the year of your trip.

Confirming the news, Oasis said: “The guns have fallen silent, The stars have aligned. The great weight is over. Come see. It will not be televised.”

Oasis have announced three extra concert dates in the UK for their reunion tour next year.

The band said they were adding the extra gigs due to "unprecedented demand" following registration for a ticket pre-sale.

They have also extended the deadline to confirm entries to the pre-sale, to 10am UK time on Friday, after worry from some social media users that they had not received responses. Fans who are successful in the ballot will be contacted by 5pm tomorrow with access information.

Noel and Liam Gallagher confirmed the band's reunion on Tuesday morning , following weeks of speculation. The comeback comes 15 years after Noel quit the band, spelling the end of Oasis , until now.

The additional gigs mean the band will now play five Wembley concerts, five in their home city, and three in Scotland - on top of two in Ireland and two in Wales.

The new dates are: 16 July at Heaton Park, Manchester; 30 July, Wembley, London; 12 August, Murrayfield Stadium, Edinburgh.

As with the initial gigs, the bulk of tickets for the new dates, following the pre-sale, go on sale on Saturday morning.

Due to a last minute surge in pre-sale ballot entries, a number of confirmation emails are still being processed and sent out. The new shows come after the band announced that some fans would be able to get their hands on tickets a day early through a pre-sale ballot - cue thousands of people rushing to register to be in with a chance .

A post on the Oasis social media channels said there had been an "unprecedented volume of entries".

Fans have complained that hotels in the gig areas have already ramped up prices. One chain in Manchester was accused of cancelling a booking made prior to the reunion announcement - and relisting the room for a higher price .

Glastonbury rumours shut down

Ahead of the reunion announcement, some media reports suggested the band would be playing a record 10 dates at Wembley, as well as a headline performance at Glastonbury .

However, the band ended speculation about the festival slot, saying in a statement: "Despite media speculation, Oasis will not be playing Glastonbury 2025 or any other festivals next year. The only way to see the band perform will be on their Oasis Live '25 World Tour."

Plans are in place for further dates outside Europe, the band confirmed in the original announcement, but no further details have been released.

'The great wait is over'

Following weeks of speculation, both of the Gallagher brothers shared the reunion news on their social media sites on Tuesday, saying: "This is it, this is happening."

"The guns have fallen silent," Oasis said. "The stars have aligned. The great wait is over. Come see. It will not be televised."

Fifteen years after the band's break-up, the brothers were pictured together for the first time in years to mark the announcement, with the photograph understood to have been taken in London in July. It is not known whether they had met up prior to that.

Revealing details about why the reunion is finally happening now after years without speaking to each other, the band's statement said there had been "no great revelatory moment", but rather "the gradual realisation that the time is right".

Today marks the 30th anniversary of Oasis's debut album, Definitely Maybe - something they said must have been a "subconscious influence" on their decision.

Details of who else from Oasis's previous line-ups will rejoin them for the tour, or of other musicians in the pipeline, have yet to be confirmed.

They have not said whether there are any plans to release new music.

Amid concerns about touts and ticket prices, the band have partnered with Twickets as their official resale platform, "to ensure their 2025 UK tour tickets are resold for no more than face value and booking fees".

The Oasis website states: "Ticket resale is permitted at no more than the price you paid (face value + booking fees). Please only use the official resale partners www.twickets.live and Ticketmaster. Selling tickets through unauthorised resale platforms will breach these T&Cs and those tickets may be cancelled."

Oasis ticket prices will not be announced until Saturday when they go on sale, a spokesperson has confirmed.

Earlier this morning, former feuding brothers Liam and Noel Gallagher have added three more dates to the UK and Ireland tour, with more shows being put on in Manchester, London, and Edinburgh.

In an exciting statement on social media, the reformed band wrote: "Due to unprecedented demand, three new UK dates will be added to Oasis Live ‘25 Heaton Park - July 16th Wembley - July 30th Edinburgh - August 12th Tickets on go on sale this Saturday, 31st August at 9am BST."

However, as fans gear up to scramble to get the most sought after concert tickets in over a decade, the ticket prices won't be available until they actually go on sale on Saturday. Given that there are four different seating options, prices will vary on where fans choose to stand or sit during the concert.

There will be one standing area, and three tiers of seating, with their three potentially having the cheapest ticket prices. It has not yet been confirmed if there will be a golden circle area for die-hard fans to be as close as possible to the Gallagher brothers as they make their epic return to stage for the first time since 2009.

However in another update, the band's Irish promoter has said their two Dublin shows will start at €86.50 (£72.80), not including booking fees. UK ticket prices include Platinum and VIP and fans will be able to buy four each.

The siblings spectacularly buried the hatchet earlier this week, taking to social media to announce the end of their 15-year feud - and the return of their band Oasis to the stage. Oasis confirmed they will be going on tour next year, with 14 dates across the UK and Ireland already penciled in.

Fans had feared there would be no pre-sale access as it wasn't confirmed until Tuesday (August 27, 2024) evening. Unfortunately, fans have already had complaints.

The Britpop band announced this week that there is a pre-sale for their upcoming tour. Fans had to sign up to be in with a chance of gaining early access yet many didn't receive confirmation emails sealing their entry.

In a message to anxious fans , Oasis stated: "We are aware that many of you are still waiting on a confirmation email. Rest assured they are on their way, as we process an unprecedented volume of entries. Everyone who has filled out the ballot form by 7pm BST today, Wednesday 28th August, will receive an email where they can confirm their entry in the ballot."

However, another issue quickly emerged soon after - with tickets set to be up for sale this Saturday, August 31, Oasis fans are gearing up for the big day but were left livid when they were greeted with a quiz while trying to sign up for pre-sale tickets.

The shows are set to be some of the hottest tickets of the decade with dates confirmed in five cities across Ireland and the UK, Cardiff, Manchester, London, Edinburgh and Dublin, in the summer of 2025.

* Tickets for the UK dates go on sale from 9am on Saturday, August 31st and will be available from www.ticketmaster.co.uk , www.gigsandtours.com and www.seetickets.com . Dublin tickets will be available from 8am that same day from www.ticketmaster.ie .

After years of rumour and speculation, Oasis have now finally reunited to announce a UK and Ireland stadium tour for 2025. Check out dates and ticket details below.

After recent weeks of reports that the Britpop giants would be returning , anticipation reached fever pitch this weekend with Liam Gallagher used his Reading Festival 2024 headline set on Sunday (August 25) to tease an announcement. The social media accounts of Oasis and brother Noel soon shared the same teaser , telling fans that news would be coming at 8am today (Tuesday August 27).

Now, they’ve launched the OASIS LIVE 25 world tour with 14 stadium dates set to take place between Cardiff, Manchester, London, Edinburgh and Dublin next summer. These will be the band’s only shows in Europe in 2025, but a press release states that “plans are underway for OASIS LIVE 25 to go to other continents outside of Europe later next year”

Along with a new photo of the Gallagher brothers side-by-side taken by Simon Emmett, the band have also shared a short statement about burying the hatchet following the very public feud that arose from the band’s split in 2009:

“The guns have fallen silent. The stars have aligned.  The great wait is over.  Come see. It will not be televised.”

The band have not yet revealed who’ll be in the rest of the line-up beyond Liam and Noel, but this week also saw newspaper reports c laim that “no other original Oasis member is expected to join the reunion”  and that “the members of Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds will step in for the concerts”.

News of the tour – reportedly set to make a colossal £400million – comes as the band release the expanded reissue of their seminal 1994 debut album ‘Definitely Maybe’ on Friday (August 30), after it celebrates in 30th anniversary the day before. The re-release comes with previously unheard and abandoned versions from the Monnow Valley session for the album, as well as outtakes from the Sawmills sessions – both mixed by Noel for the first time.

Liam has recently been playing the album in full on a solo tour throughout summer 2024, including headline sets at Reading & Leeds this weekend. His Reading performance saw him dedicate ‘Half The World Away’ (a classic song sung by his brother) to “Noel fucking Gallagher” , further stoking rumours of a reunion when the same song during his Leeds set  saw him tell the audience: “It is very interesting init? It is a very interesting situation we’ve found ourselves in.”

Liam and Noel Gallagher of Oasis

This was only fuelled by Noel sharing some rare complimentary words for his brother , praising Liam’s vocal ability over his own in a new interview.

Talk then gathered momentum when Liam responded to online fan discussion about a report by The Times over the weekend, in which the publication claimed Oasis would be playing a string of shows in London and Manchester in 2025 – including gigs at Heaton Park, 10 at Wembley Stadium and a rumoured Glastonbury headline appearance.

One user wrote: “Heaton Park terrible venue for concerts,” to which the frontman responded: “See you down the front you big fanny.”

  • READ MORE:  Noel Gallagher interviewed: “The world is a beautiful place – it’s just inhabited by c**ts”

Another fan commented: “this will last about five seconds,” with Liam adding: “You got a crystal ball cunty bollocks.”

As it stands, the tour date schedule still leaves the band open to headline Glasto 2025 – which takes place the week before from Wednesday June 25 to Sunday June 29. Other acts rumoured to top the bill include Eminem , Rihanna , Sam Fender , Taylor Swift , and Ed Sheeran .

Before the ‘Definitely Maybe’ 30th anniversary tour kicked off, Liam shared that Noel is said to have turned down an opportunity to reunite for the shows, and even  suggested that he would “send him a box of chocolates” as an apology for being “really mean” to him  around the time of Oasis’ break-up in 2009.

More recently, Liam told his audience that  Noel was “still playing hard to get” regarding a comeback for the band .

Speaking to NME  in 2020 , Liam said an Oasis reunion was “gonna happen very fucking soon”, before Noel revealed in early 2023 that he would “never say never” to the idea .

A dampener was soon put on any hopes though, as LG subsequently argued that  his older brother had “done a lot of damage to Oasis as a brand” , and Noel  claimed that his brother was too much of a “coward” to follow through  with the idea, later  accusing Liam of trying to “rewrite history” regarding Oasis’ “dreadful” final year together .

Since then,  Noel also discussed the possibility of an Oasis comeback during an interview with NME , adding that the reason why it hasn’t happened yet was because there had “never really been a serious offer about ‘The Big O’ getting back together”.

Noel Gallagher

Liam and Noel have not performed together since Oasis’ acrimonious split in 2009 , following an “altercation” between the pair at Paris’ Rock en Seine festival, just hours before their headline appearance. “It’s with some sadness and great relief to tell you that I quit Oasis tonight,” Noel wrote at the time. “People will write and say what they like, but I simply could not go on working with [singer, his brother] Liam a day longer.”

Looking back on the event that led to his departure in 2021 , Noel described them as a “shitstorm”. “Oasis tours were always about the struggle, anyway,” he said. “The incident in Paris, that was just the straw that broke the camel’s back, really.”

Noel recalled how he sat in the back of a car at the music festival after deciding it was time to quit the band.

“And the driver pulled off and that was it. I didn’t feel a sense of relief because I knew there was a shitstorm coming. And there was going to be a lot of nonsense talked about it,” he said. “One of the biggest bands ever imploded, finally. And I couldn’t go back to England because the press had descended on my house and my missus was there with my kids.”

He added: “So we had to kind of spirit her out in the middle of the night and they came to join me in France somewhere. And then when we eventually got back to England, of course all fucking hell broke loose.”

Since Oasis split, both Gallagher brothers have enjoyed successful solo careers and been crowned Godlike Genius at the NME Awards. Noel has released four albums with The High Flying Birds – the last being 2023’s acclaimed ‘Council Skies ‘ – while Liam released two albums with Beady Eye between 2009-2014 before finding much more momentum as a solo artist in 2017. As well as echoing Oasis’ success in selling out a huge show at Knebworth under his own name, he has released three chart-topping solo albums, as well as this year’s long-awaited collaborative record with The Stone Roses’ John Squire .

The last decade has also seen Oasis fans kept happy with the release of the now-classic documentary Supersonic in 2016 , and Oasis Knebworth 1996 – a live album and film which chronicled the band’s zenith of when they played to 250,000 fans across two nights in the ’90s, at shows that saw 2.7 per cent of the UK population applying for tickets.

Reports from The Irish Mirror have disclosed the ticket charges that approximately 80,000 fans will face each night to witness the iconic ensemble at Dublins Croke Park stadium, the Mirror has reported.

Music promoters MCD have verified that ticket prices will commence at €86.50 (£72.96), excluding the booking fee. This pricing structure puts Oasis on course to amass almost €15m from ticket sales in two nights at their Dublin shows alone.

These concerts promise to be among the most coveted events of the decade, with stages set in five cities across Ireland and the UK Cardiff , Manchester, London, Edinburgh, and Dublinin the summer of 2025.

Music industry insiders project that upcoming sales will "absolutely dwarf" those of Taylor Swift's Eras Tour. DJ Kevin McManus commented on the phenomenon, telling ITV News: "I think people forget but the two Knebworth shows they did almost 4% of the population tried to get tickets," He added, "They sold out 250,000 tickets, but it was a ridiculous amount of people who tried to buy tickets, they were that huge."

"But this, because people have been talking about it for the past decade, it's going to be even bigger. I think everybody is going to try and get a ticket. Taylor Swift was obviously the big deal this summer, I think it's going to absolutely dwarf that, just because it's them and there's that talk."

To manage demand, Ticketmaster has set a four-ticket per household limit and asserted that only transactions with sanctioned agents will be considered legitimate. Fans in desperate pursuit of tickets are being cautioned amid concerns about scammers exploiting the tour's popularity.

A grim reminder of such risks emerged in April, 2024, when over 600 Lloyds Bank clients reported scam cases related to Taylor Swift's Eras Tour, which arrived in the UK in June. The average loss was £332, with some individuals suffering losses exceeding £1,000.

Lloyds Bank's fraud prevention director Liz Ziegler has issued a stark reminder to Oasis fans eagerly waiting for the band's reunion, as reported by Mail Online: "Missing out on these landmark gigs would be devastating for Oasis fans who have waited so long for this reunion. But you can be sure that criminals are getting ready to 'slide away' with their hard-earned cash."

Ziegler warned: "Most of these scams begin on social media, where impostors create fake profiles to sell non-existent tickets. The simple rule for fans is always stick to official ticketing platforms and avoid deals which look too good to be true."

Oasis

First the good news: if you have any fantasy of snagging tickets to Oasis ‘ 2025 UK reunion tour now is the time to act. Since famously battling brothers Liam and Noel Gallagher shocked the world this week by announcing that they have put their legendary differences in the past for the comeback nobody thought was possible, anticipation for the on-sale for the run of shows across the British Isles has exploded.

Upon filling out the general details, fans will be led to a screen that reads: “Hate touts? Please help us keep this fair and fan-focused by answering the following series of questions.” And though they don’t have any bearing on whether the ballot will be accepted, the questions include, “How many Oasis shows have you been to?,” “Who was the drummer in the initial Oasis line-up?” and “Where would you like to see Oasis?”

Given the intense interest in the shows, a final message notes that due to the “extremely high volume of entries” confirmation emails may be delayed. All successful ballot entrants will receive their code by noon BST Friday (7 a.m. ET); if you don’t get a code your application was not successful. Those lucky fans who do get a code can claim only one and the small print notes that the codes have no cash value and are “non-transferable, case-sensitive and good for one-time use only for limited tickets during pre-sale window.” The code has to be used with the email address that it was originally sent to.

The rules also note that ticket resale is permitted at “no more than the price you paid (face value + booking fees),” with a warning that the only approved resale partners are Ticketmaster and www.twickets.live, with sales made through unauthorized platforms possibly leading to the tickets being cancelled.

At press time there was no official confirmation on ticket prices for the 14 announced shows, though the BBC reported that the costs for GA, as well as Platinum and VIP, will be announced on Thursday (August 29).

After calling it quits more than 15 years ago due to tension between singer Liam Gallagher and the band’s musical fountainhead, guitarist/singer Noel Gallagher, the battling brothers announced on Tuesday that they would be hitting the road for a series of 14 stadium dates in Cardiff, their hometown of Manchester, London, Edinburgh and Dublin next summer. So far no other international dates for Oasis Live 25 have been announced, but a press release promised that “plans are underway for Oasis Live 25 to go to other continents outside of Europe later next year.”

Supersonic: where will the money be made on Oasis reunion tour?

Band’s shows next summer expected to be most popular tour in British history – and a solid gold financial hit

  • Business live – latest updates

T he Oasis reunion is expected to be the most popular tour in British history, a solid gold financial hit for the band, managers, ticket sellers and stadium operators, as well as an economic phenomenon worth hundreds of millions for businesses cashing in on super-fans .

The news that Liam and Noel Gallagher have buried the hatchet – or at least put their differences aside for the sake of a reported £50m payday – has sparked a nationwide ticket scramble as the cost of living crisis is put to one side for the spectacle of seeing the band reunited after 15 years away.

Fans are set to make a mass pilgrimage next summer. Dates have been set for shows in Cardiff, Manchester, London, Edinburgh and Dublin, as Oasis look to follow in the money-spinning footsteps of recent mega tours by Taylor Swift and Beyoncé.

“The idea of big-concept live music tours having a massive economic impact on local economies is the new normal,” said Mark Mulligan, the head of music analysis and founder at Midia Research. “Superstar acts today like Beyoncé and Taylor Swift have turned tours into cultural events in their own right. Now it’s the turn of Oasis .”

When Beyoncé took her world tour to Sweden, prices in its capital, Stockholm, rocketed. Michael Grahn, the chief economist at Danske Bank, called the phenomenon the “Beyoncé blip” as it increased the country’s inflation rate in the month she played two gigs.

Similarly in the UK, fans desperate to catch Taylor Swift’s Eras tour booked out hotels and sparked a debate over whether the shows had pushed up the UK inflation rate .

Taylor Swift performs at Wembley stadium: she is wearing a sparkly leotard and fluffy cloak with knee-high boots, and two dancers are pictured behind her

Members of the public have already turned to the social media platform X to complain about hotels in Dublin and Manchester cancelling existing bookings that clash with concert dates and reposting the rooms at an exorbitant price increase. One user claimed Dublin hotels were reposting rooms at three times the original price, while another posted a map claiming to show prices before and after the tour was announced.

Sacha Lord, Greater Manchester’s night-time economy adviser, urged the Maldron hotel chain to “do the right thing” after receiving complaints.

Hey @MaldronHotels . I'm being contacted by several people who booked your hotel for the Oasis concert, to say their rooms have just been cancelled and are now back up for three times the price. I'm sure this is a "computer error"... easy to correct. Do the right thing. — Sacha Lord (@Sacha_Lord) August 27, 2024

The chain, which has two hotels in Manchester , said that the cancellations were due to a “technical error” with too many bookings taken for the nights of the Oasis gigs.

“As a result, we are unable to honour all bookings made on these dates,” the company said. “We are actively engaging with customers regarding their bookings. This is not an attempt to resell rooms at inflated prices.”

Premier Inn, the UK’s biggest hotel chain, only has rooms available at Manchester airport on the nights of the Oasis concerts. Travelodge only has rooms 5 miles from the concert venue, Heaton Park, at twice the typical price of dates when the band are not playing.

Andy Burnham, the mayor of Greater Manchester, has been quick to spy the commercial and cultural opportunity the band’s return to the live stage will bring.

“Oasis reforming is great news for the city region and another massive opportunity for the eyes of the world to be back on Greater Manchester,” he said. “Greater Manchester is in a different moment now with a thriving economy, and Oasis returning and playing these shows in their home city will only boost this.

“We saw this cultural boom in the 1980s and 1990s … Greater Manchester often has a tendency to talk about its past glories. I think this is a fantastic opportunity for a new generation of Greater Mancunians.”

While the band members are set to enjoy a hefty payday from the reunion, so too will a group of promoters and ticket sellers driving the commercial side of the tour.

Manchester-based SJM, one of the largest concert promoters in the UK, founded by the owner of the Warrington Wolves rugby league club, Simon Moran, has partnered with fellow promoters MCD Productions and DF Concerts for the shows.

SJM – which puts on more than 2,000 concerts a year – is likely to see a significant boost to its revenues. Its most recently available accounts filed at Companies House show the business made a pre-tax profit of £17.7m on £275m in revenues in 2022.

after newsletter promotion

MCD has revealed that 80,000 tickets for the Oasis performance at Croke Park in Dublin will go on sale this weekend starting at €86.50 (£73) plus a booking fee.

However, the biggest winner is likely to be Live Nation, the US giant that owns Ticketmaster and hundreds of venues globally, which has seen its business boom thanks to pent-up demand for live music after the Covid lockdowns.

The company, which is dealing with the continuing fallout of a cyber-attack in June when hackers accessed the personal data of potentially hundreds of millions of Ticketmaster customers, reported a 36% increase in revenues last year to $22.7bn (£17.2bn). Live Nation’s global revenues have doubled since 2019.

Alice Enders, the director of research at Enders Analysis, said: “The mega-trend in consumer music spend is not recorded streaming services but the experience of live music, which super-fan clusters especially will pay a lot for .

“Oasis have been completely off both the recorded music and live music scenes, and reforming will drive ticket sales as well as streaming of their songs.”

Signs are that Oasis are attracting not just a renewed wave of interest from existing older fans but a new wave of generation Z music lovers who are embracing the band.

Spotify has seen a 690% increase in the number of daily streams globally of Oasis songs since the reunion tour announcement, compared with average streaming levels.

Other businesses that may be hoping to benefit from a halo effect include the clothing brand Pretty Green, which was founded by Liam Gallagher in 2009 but is now owned by Mike Ashley’s Frasers Group , and merchandise sellers.

Birmingham City University has speculated that the 14-date UK tour could bring in £400m in ticket sales and add-ons alone. However, Enders is sceptical of such lofty projections on the basis that the initial tour is too small – unless fans are gouged on price. “Fourteen dates in the UK does not make a whale,” she said. “Unless the prices of tickets are higher than average [£100 plus booking fee], which would be dissuading to fans.”

The most lucrative world concert tour to date is estimated to be Swift’s Eras tour, which has grossed more than $1bn from 60 shows, followed by Coldplay, who made $945m over 153 shows between 2022 and 2024. Elton John, a perennial tourer, made $939m from 330 shows in his farewell extravaganza that ran from 2018 to 2023.

However, there is longer-term potential for Oasis to join the ranks of mega-earning tourers. There are plans to take the show international after the initial dates next year – if the Gallagher brothers can keep their long history of imploding on the back burner, that is.
