7 Day Uttarakhand Road Trip Itinerary

7 Day Uttarakhand Road Trip Itinerary

The Best of Uttarakhand in One Week

Uttarakhand Tourism saw a sharp rise in popularity the last couple of years. This northern state in India is a cornucopia of many hill stations and tourist attractions. There is so much to do and so much to see as Uttarakhand is blessed with natural beauty – jungles, rivers, snow-clad mountains and an inherent sense of divinity. The state is also called “Devbhumi” (“The Land of the Gods”) as it is home to many highly revered shrines like  Badrinath, Kedarnath  and so many others. And then there is offbeat Uttarakhand that we keep exploring whenever we can find an opportunity.

It can take a whole book to write about what are the best things to do in Uttarakhand . But that is for another day. Here is our humble attempt to create an Uttarakhand guide about what all can you do in 7 days, through this 7 Day Uttarakhand Travel Itinerary and Guide . We have tried to include destinations that you can reach within 6-7 hours of journey from each other.

  • How to reach Uttarakhand

The best way to reach Uttarakhand from any part of the world is by starting from Delhi. Delhi is very well-connected with Uttarakhand via road, rail and air. Though there are 5 airports in Uttarakhand, you may or may not get a direct flight. Once you are in Delhi, you can opt for road transport like a rented cab, bus or a self driven car. From our experience, Uttarakhand road trips are most convenient to reach some of the offbeat places.

Day 1 – Delhi to Haridwar

Day 2 – haridwar to mussoorie, day 3 – mussoorie to chakrata, day 4 – chakrata to lansdowne, day 5 – lansdowne to nainital, day 6 – kausani day trip, day 7 – nainital to jim corbett national park , day 8 – back to delhi, 7 day uttarakhand road trip itinerary – summary, share this:.

Haridwar is famous for River Ganges. It is a temple town in Uttarakhand and is famous for its Ganga Aarti that is performed every morning and evening. One can cover the 200 kms odd strech from Delhi to Haridwar within 5 hours and the road condition is good. The stretch is full of eating options like  dhabas , hotels and cafes. The good part is Haridwar is in the Himalayan foothills so one can expect decent weather.

uttarakhand travel guide

Things to do in Haridwar include Ganga Aarti  especially in the evening. It’s a spectacle like no other. Thousands of devotees gather around the river banks to offer prayers to Goddess Ganga. Priests with lamps in their hands chant mantras and the atmosphere looks blissful. There are myriad temples in Haridwar each with a different story. You can also visit Rishikesh from Haridwar which is barely 45 minutes drive and there are some famous temples and ashram in Rishikesh. The famous Beatles Ashram is also in Rishikesh. One can opt for hourly meditation and spa sessions in Rishikesh as well. This zone is also the most popular water rafting zone in North India.

Haridwar to Mussoorie is around 85kms and is not more than a 3 hours drive. Mussoorie is also called the “Queen of Hills” and hence from Day 2 your trip is going to be mostly on high terrain. Mussoorie is immensely popular with tourists because of many reasons. For one, Mussoorie has great weather throughout the year. Further, it has access to all sorts of hotel options from basic to luxury, from family friendly places to hostels and dormitories. Thirdly, this place has fantastic connectivity to other locations in Uttarakhand.

uttarakhand travel guide

Things to do in Mussoorie include pottering down the famous Mall Road , trekking to Char Dukan , St Paul’s Church and early morning walk to camel’s back point. While trekking, do look out for antique and cobbler shops that make handmade shoes on order. A visit to hill resort Rockby’s Manor and savouring cheese omelette at Lovely Omelette Shop are also highly recommended. You may shop for souvenirs from the Mall Road of Mussoorie. It is full of gift options for all tastes and budgets.

uttarakhand travel guide

You will drive 100kms and reach Chakrata in a span of 3 hours  from Mussoorie and see a completely different side of Uttarakhand here. While Mussoorie is extremely touristy, Chakrata is quite the opposite. It is an offbeat place and you may not see many tourists here. But it is breathtakingly beautiful and has retained its tranquillity. Chakrata is less explored but there are also many things one can do here in addition to soaking in the natural beauty. The most popular activity here is to visit Tiger Falls. These falls create sounds of roaring tigers when water drops from top of the hill to the pond at the bottom. It is a perfect picnic spot and you can frolic in the water. Apart from the waterfalls one can also visit  Mahsu Temple and Budher Caves.

For adventure lovers there are arrangements for water rappelling at Kimona Falls.

Start the day early and within 6-7 hours of driving from Chakrata, covering around 250 kms, you will reach Lansdowne, a sleepy hill station in Uttarakhand. Lansdowne is essentially a Cantonment Town, and is home to the eilte  Garhwal Rifles of the Indian Army and hence you can expect peace, cleanliness and order. It is one of our most favorite places in Uttarakhand, no wonder we have visited it many times.

uttarakhand travel guide

Things to do in Lansdowne include visiting Bulla Taal , a manmade lake which almost looks like a set from Indiana Jones movie, St Mary’s Church and trek up to Tiffin Top . We would highly recommend doing all these things by foot. All these things are under one hour trekking from each other and you will be able to absorb the beauty of Lansdowne better. Don’t forget to savour the famous chocolate  burfi  and Baal Mithai  – the specialty desserts of this region . We bet you will get these packed for friends and family.

A 6-7 hour drive covering around 250 kms will take you from Lansdowne to Nainital , which is perhaps the busiest hill station in Uttarakhand. Just like Mussoorie, Nainital also gets tourists all through the year. Summer vacations are the peak season in Nainital and if you don’t like crowds you should avoid holiday months for visiting this place. Nevertheless, it is a beautiful hill station any day.

uttarakhand travel guide

The Naini Lake surrounded by green mountains is the heart of this place. Boating in Naini Lake is just one of the things to do here. Apart from this, you can visit the Naina Devi Temple , enjoy cable car rides and visit Eco Caves Garden . The Mall Road is a perfect place for shopping. Look out for hand carved wax candles here. This is a local handicraft and the candles come in all sorts of shapes and sizes. We would also highly recommend breakfast and bakery items at The Sakleys, A Mountain Cafe on Mall Road.

Don’t check out from your hotel at Nainital when you start for Kausani the next morning. Kausani can be visited from Nainital and one is advised to come back the same night since there are not many lodging options in Kausani. The driving time from Nainital to Kasauni is less than 4 hours and Kausani will give you a much-needed break from the humdrum of Nainital. Start early in the morning and you can visit Neem Karouli Ashram and  Katarmal Sun Temple on route to Kausani. If you love history, Katarmal Sun Temple may turn out to be a spectacular experience.

uttarakhand travel guide

Kausani is a quaint little hamlet in Uttarakhand and would be loved by travellers who like peace and solitude. Apart from watching the valley from the binoculars from the highest point here, one must visit Gandhiji’s Anashakti Ashram in Kausani. It is a beautiful ashram cum museum displaying Gandhi memorabilia. Kausani is a perfect place to just be and not do anything. Just be one with nature and be awed by the variety of brightly coloured wild flowers. Start on your way back around sunset and you’ll be in Nainital by dinner time.

uttarakhand travel guide

Another interesting alternative, is to head out of Nainital, and drive to Bhimtal, an hour away, and check into Fredy’s Bungalow – A Colonial style bungalow , for the night, surrounded by nature, which is perfect for disconnecting and reconnecting with nature. Among the many things that you can do, the best of the lot is to go hiking which also involves plenty of bird watching.

Jim Corbett National Park, the last destination on this 7 Day Uttarakhand Road Trip Itinerary, is barely 2 hours from Nainital and this would be your drive downhill back to the plains. Jim Corbett National Park, which also happens to be one of the Best National Parks in India , is famous for its jungle safari which happens early mornings and evenings. Most of the accommodation here are resorts, such as Aahana Resort and there are barely any standalone restaurants.

It is highly advisable to pre book your jungle safari as the better zones get full very easily. If you are lucky you may see tigers in the jungle but it highly depends on which zone are you in and which month you visit Jim Corbett. Don’t focus too much on tiger sightings and enjoy the deer, nilgai, and host of birds like kingfisher that would surely come your way. The overall safari experience is beautiful.

uttarakhand travel guide

Apart from jungle safari, one can go for a village tour on foot or on a bicycle that your resort may provide. Since it’s your last day in Uttarakhand we would highly recommend taking it easy and Jim Corbett is a perfect place for that. The place has a very relaxed and laid-back vibe. Being forest area travellers are not advised to venture out in the night. That is the best time to chill in a pool or rejuvenate in a spa inside the resort.

Start after breakfast from Jim Corbett National Park and after a 5 hours drive, you will be in Delhi with your cameras full of beautiful pictures and your hearts full of amazing memories.

The state is home to a large number of Hindu temples that are situated in its remote corners. There are several holy rivers like the River Ganga which make it a sacred pilgrimage destination as well. Haridwar is one of the top pilgrimage destinations in Uttarakhand and serves as the Gateway to the Char Dhams of Uttarakhand. Har Ki Pauri is a major religious attraction in Uttarakhand.

The Kumbh Mela is held in Haridwar in Uttarakhand once every 12 years. The state is also home to the Panch Badri, Panch Kedar and Panch Prayag. It is believed that taking a dip in the confluences cleanses the body, mind and spirit, and takes an individual closer to mukti or liberation.

The famous Char Dham Yatra is a major pilgrimage for Hindus in Uttarakhand. The Char Dham refers to the four pilgrimage destinations, which are Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath and Badrinath. It starts from Yamunotri, then proceeds to Gangotri and Kedarnath and finally ends at Badrinath. The state is also home to Sikh pilgrimage destinations like Hemkund Sahib, located in the Chamoli district of Uttarakhand and is the highest gurudwara in India.

Uttarakhand

Uttarakhand is a place of myth and mountains. Hindus think of it as Dev Bhoomi – the Land of Gods – and the dramatic terrain is covered with holy peaks, lakes and rivers. Twisting roads and high-altitude hiking trails lead to spectacular pilgrimage sites where tales from Hindu epics are set. Though the presence of Shiva and Parvati (in a few of her forms) tower over the state, the imprint of British colonialism is equally apparent: the legend of hunter Jim Corbett lives on in the famed tiger reserve that bears his name; popular holiday towns were once Raj-era hill stations; and the Beatles turned Rishikesh into a magnet for spiritual seekers and yoga practitioners worldwide.

Northeast of Delhi , bordering Nepal and Tibet, the mountains of the Garhwal and Kumaon regions rise from the fertile sub-Himalayan plains. Together they form the state of Uttarakhand, which (as Uttaranchal) was shorn free from lowland Uttar Pradesh in 2000 after years of agitation. The region has its own distinct languages and cultures, and successive deep river valleys shelter fascinating micro-civilizations, where Hinduism and Buddhism meet animism. The snow peaks here rank among the most beautiful mountains of the inner Himalayas, forming an almost continuous chain that culminates in Nanda Devi, the highest mountain in India at 7816m.

Garhwal is the more visited region, busy with pilgrims who flock to its holy spots. At Haridwar, the Ganges thunders out from the foothills on its long journey to the sea.

The nearby ashram town of Rishikesh is familiar from one of the classic East-meets-West images of the 1960s; it was where the Beatles came to stay with the Maharishi. From here pilgrims set off for the high temples of Char Dham – Badrinath, Kedarnath, Yamunotri and Gangotri, the source of the Ganges.

Earthier pursuits are on offer at Mussoorie, a British hill station and now a popular Indian resort. The less-visited Kumaon region remains largely unspoilt, and boasts pleasant small towns with panoramic mountain views, among them Kausani, Ranikhet, and the tiny hamlet of Kasar Devi, as well as the Victorian hill station of Nainital, where a lakeside promenade throngs with visitors escaping the heat of the plains.

Further down, it’s possible to stay inside Corbett Tiger Reserve and take a jeep safari to search for elusive wildlife. Both districts abound in classic treks, many leading through bugyals – summer pastures, where rivers are born and paths meet.

From the pilgrim circuit to the four sacred sites of Garhwal to the Gangotri Trek beyond the tree line to Gaumukh Glacier, here’s what to do in Uttarakhand.

#1 Get spiritual at Char Dham

As the sacred land that holds the sources of the mighty Ganges and Yamuna rivers, Garhwal has been the heartland of Hindu identity since the ninth century when, in the wake of the decline of Buddhism in northern India , the reformer Adi Shankara incorporated many of the mountains’ ancient shrines into the fold of Hinduism.

He founded the four main yatra (pilgrimage) temples, deep within the Himalayas, known as the Char Dham – Badrinath, Kedarnath, Gangotri and Yamunotri.

Each year, between May and November, once the snows have melted, streams of pilgrims penetrate high into the mountains, passing by way of Haridwar and Rishikesh, the land of yogis and ashrams.

In addition to their spiritual significance, the hills have become a hub for adventure sports, offering all levels of trekking, whitewater rafting, paragliding, skiing and climbing.

#2 Witness devotion to the life-bestowing goddess Ganga in Haridwar

Split by a barrage north of Haridwar, the Ganges flows through the town in two channels, divided by a long sliver of land. The natural stream lies to the east, while the embankment of the fast-flowing canal to the west holds the ghats and ashrams around Har-ki-Pairi temple.

Bridges and walkways connect the various islands, and metal chains are placed in the river to protect bathers from being swept away. The clock tower opposite Har-ki-Pairi ghat is an excellent vantage point, especially during evening worship.

At both dawn and dusk, the spectacular ceremony of Ganga Aarti – devotion to the life-bestowing goddess Ganga – draws crowds of thousands. Lights float down the river and priests perform elaborate choreographed movements while swinging torches to the accompaniment of gongs and music

#3 Try yoga in Rishikesh

Rishikesh, 238km northeast of Delhi and just 24km north of Haridwar, huddles along the steep wooded banks of the fast-flowing Ganges as it exits the mountains of Garwhal to crash onto the plains.

The centre for all manner of New Age and Hindu activity, its many ashrams continue to draw devotees and followers, with the large Shivananda Ashram in particular renowned as a yoga centre.

Rishikesh has one or two ancient shrines, but its main role has always been as a waystation for sannyasis, yogis and travellers heading for the high Himalayas.

The arrival of the Beatles, who came here to meet the Maharishi in 1968, triggered the lucrative expansion of the yatra pilgrimage circuit; these days it’s easy to see why Ringo thought it was “just like Butlin’s”.

#4 Tackle the Gangotri Trek

A flight of steps beside the Gangotri temple begins the 20km trek to Gaumukh Glacier, one of the most beautiful and accessible glaciers in the inner Himalayas. Leaving Gangotri, the trail rises gently above the north bank of the river, offering increasingly spectacular mountain vistas.

About 7km further is the oasis of Chirbasa, where the skyline becomes dominated by magnificent buttresses and glass-like walls, culminating in the sharp pinnacles of Bhagirathi 3 (6454m) and Bhagirathi 1 (6856m). The path then climbs above the tree line, passing across a steep rocky area prone to landslides.

Just around the bend, beyond a stream crossing, 5km from Chirbasa, is the cold grey hamlet of Bhojbasa, cowering in the shadows of the surrounding peaks. Most visitors spend a night here before the final push to the glacier. It’s worth braving the cold to reach Gaumukh for sunrise.

#5 Admire The Valley of Flowers

Starting from the mountain hamlet of Govind Ghat (1800m), 28km south of Badrinath, an important pilgrim trail winds 15km up a steep stone path to the overgrown village of Gangharia (3048m), also known as Ghovind Dham. This one-street town is a stopover point for hundreds of Sikh pilgrims en route to Hemkund, as well as for a small trickle of visitors to the Valley of Flowers.

Starting at an altitude of 3352m, the valley was discovered in 1931 by the visionary mountaineer Frank Smythe, who named it for its multitude of rare and beautiful flora. The meadows are at their best during the monsoon, from mid-July until mid-August.

#6 Complete the Kuari Pass trek

The old route over the Kuari Pass (4268m) in northeastern Garhwal, also called the Curzon Trail after the British viceroy who traversed parts of it in 1905, provides some stunning mountain views.

Officially renamed the Nehru Trail after Independence, the popular five-day trek crosses the high ranges without entering the permanent snowline, making it an ideal expedition for those not equipped to tackle glacial terrain.

Following alpine meadows, crossing several major streams and skirting the outer western edge of the Nanda Devi National Park, the trail affords excellent views of Trisul (7120m), the trident, Nanda Ghunti (6309m), and the elusive tooth-like Changabang (6864m), while to the far north on the border with Tibet rises the unmistakeable pyramid of Kamet (7756m).

Camping equipment is needed, especially on the pass; guides can be negotiated in Joshimath or Ghat.

#7 Spot big cats at the Corbett Tiger Reserve

Based at Ramnagar, 63km southwest of Nainital, Corbett Tiger Reserve is one of India’s premier wildlife reserves. Established in 1936 by Jim Corbett (among others) as the Hailey National Park, India’s first, and later renamed in his honour, it is one of Himalayan India’s last expanses of wilderness.

Almost the entire 1288-square-kilometre park, spread over the foothills of Kumaon, is sheltered by a buffer zone of mixed deciduous and giant sal forests, which provide impenetrable cover for wildlife. The core area of 520 square kilometres at its heart remains out of bounds, and safaris on foot are only permissible in the fringe forests.

Corbett is famous for its big cats, in particular, the tiger – it was the first designated Project Tiger Reserve in 1973 – but its 215 or so tigers are elusive, and sightings are far from guaranteed.

Across Uttarakhand, better quality and more contemporary places to stay are primarily found in the larger cities. Towns and mountain villages often provide only minimal amenities. Here’s where to stay.

With a range of accommodations , from budget guesthouses and ashrams to luxury resorts, Rishikesh provides a perfect blend of spirituality, adventure, and tranquillity.

Perched at an elevation of 2,000 metres (6,500 feet), Mussoorie is a charming hill station nestled in the Garhwal Himalayas. It boasts a range of accommodations , including cosy hillside retreats and luxury resorts, making it an ideal choice for a rejuvenating mountain getaway.

Nestled around the sparkling Naini Lake, is a picturesque hill station known for its natural beauty and serene atmosphere. Waterside Nainital offers a variety of accommodation options , including lakeside resorts and charming colonial guesthouses.

For a serene and offbeat experience, stay in Almora. This quiet hill town is known for its panoramic views of the Himalayas. It has a mix of heritage hotels to cosy guesthouses .

Known for its breathtaking landscapes, rich cultural heritage, and spiritual significance, Uttarakhand offers a multitude of transportation options to help you explore its hidden treasures. Here’s how to get around.

Uttarakhand is well-connected by rail, with several important railway stations serving as gateways to the region. Major railheads include Haridwar, Dehradun, Kathgodam, and Rishikesh.

From these stations, you can easily access popular destinations in Uttarakhand via local transport options, such as buses or taxis.

Uttarakhand State Transport Corporation (UTC) operates an extensive network of buses connecting various towns and cities within the state. These buses offer a budget-friendly option for travellers and provide an opportunity to soak in the scenic beauty of Uttarakhand during the journey.

Uttarakhand's bus services range from ordinary buses to deluxe and Volvo buses, catering to different comfort preferences. However, be prepared for longer travel times due to frequent stops and winding mountain roads.

By shared jeep

Shared jeeps are a popular mode of transport in Uttarakhand, especially for short to medium-distance journeys. These shared vehicles operate on fixed routes, picking up and dropping off passengers along the way.

However, be prepared for potentially crowded seating arrangements and longer waiting times until the vehicle fills up.

By private car

One of the most convenient and flexible options for exploring Uttarakhand is by hiring a private car or taxi. This mode of transport allows you to navigate at your own pace, making stops at scenic viewpoints and lesser-known attractions along the way. Private cars or taxis can be hired from major cities and towns.

For a short but memorable visit to Uttarakhand, you will need a minimum of 4 to 6 days. During this time, you can focus on one or two key destinations and immerse yourself in their unique offerings. You may choose to start your journey in Rishikesh, experiencing its spiritual ambiance and engaging in yoga and meditation practices. From there, you can venture into the nearby towns of Haridwar or Mussoorie, or delve into the natural wonders of the Rajaji National Park.

Otherwise, you can truly embrace the essence of Uttarakhand and delve deeper into its wonders by allocating 8 to 10 days for your visit. This time frame allows for a more comprehensive exploration of the region, enabling you to experience multiple destinations, including a visit to the ancient temples of Kedanath or Badrinath, and soak in the spiritual ambiance of these revered pilgrimage sites.

Carved out from Uttar Pradesh, this enchanting region is a treasure trove where the majestic Himalayan peaks meet a profound connection with nature. This captivating scene is the hallmark of Uttarakhand’s natural beauty, a world untouched by the modern hustle and bustle, where tranquility and pristine landscapes await your exploration.

Best Time To Visit Uttarakhand

Pleasant summers, severe monsoons and harsh winters is the weather pattern in most hilly regions of India. It's no different for Uttarakhand. If you are planning a trip to the state, the best time to explore Uttarakhand tourism is during summer or winter.

Travelling during monsoon is discouraged since you won't be able to enjoy sightseeing tours or the various adventure activities. As per the Uttarakhand travel guide , monsoon in Uttarakhand begins in the month of July and lasts until September. We strongly recommend not travelling during this time.

Summer, on the other hand, is a beautiful time to explore Uttarakhand tourism. Beginning in the month of March and lasting until June, this is the peak season for Uttarakhand tourism. You'll not only be treated to warm sunshine but can also admire the verdant greenery around you.

For those who want to explore Uttarakhand tourism during winter, the best time to visit is between October and February. The day temperatures are at 15 degrees Celsius while nights are extremely cold with temperatures as low as minus one degree Celsius.

Typical Costs In Uttarakhand

Like most places in India, Uttarakhand offers experiences which can be customised to your budget and interests. So if you are a backpacker and want to explore Uttarakhand tourism, you can easily plan a budget trip. At the same time, luxury travellers can experience the best of everything in high-end, boutique properties which will take your breath away.

Luxury travellers can experience Uttarakhand tourism with per day costs of Rs.12,000 to Rs.20,000.

For mid-budget travellers, a trip to explore Uttarakhand tourism can cost between Rs.3000 to Rs.5000. It's important to remember that the amount will completely depend on the kind of places you are including in your Uttarakhand trip.

Budget travellers can expect to spend anywhere between Rs.700 to Rs.1000 per day. While Uttarakhand tourism has made efforts to make it easier for backpackers, there are a few factors such as transport, lack of hostels and unpredictable weather conditions which may increase your budget.

Top Attractions In Uttarakhand

There are numerous places to see in Uttarakhand tourism which offer travellers a perfect blend of beauty, adventure and spirituality. Rishikesh and Haridwar Rishikesh and Haridwar are two cities you can visit together. Located a few kilometres from each other, both Rishikesh and Haridwar offer different experiences. Haridwar is an important pilgrimage spot for Hindus and an integral part of Uttarakhand tourism. It's believed that one can wash away sins in the holy Ganga and you'll see a large number of pilgrims performing various rituals along the ghats. This is also the city where Hindus perform last rites and other after-death rituals. The city is home to numerous temples and is mostly visited by spiritual seekers. Rishikesh is popular with backpackers, trekkers and spiritual seekers. Home to numerous health resorts which offer yoga and meditation retreats, Rishikesh hugely contributes to Uttarakhand tourism. Owing to the presence of spiritual centres, Rishikesh also sees a large number of foreign tourists. Another reason Rishikesh is one of the most popular places in Uttarakhand tourism is due to the several adventure activities you can do here. From rafting, rappelling, rock climbing to bungee jumping, river crossing and trekking – there is a lot to keep travellers busy. One can book adventure tours focused on these activities or can also opt for yoga retreats customised to suit the needs of fitness enthusiasts. Among the best places to visit in Uttarakhand tourism, we recommend including Laksham Jhula, Triveni Ghat, Neelkanth Mahadev Temple, Bharat Mandir and Chaurasi Kutia, which is better known as the Beatles Ashram. It's important to remember that most campsites along the Ganga River are now closed and you will have to stay in hotels or guest houses if you want to enjoy the enthralling river rafting tour. Nainital Most people consider Nainital to be a busy tourist spot in Uttarakhand tourism. While that is true, Nainital is also an ideal hill station for nature lovers and peace seekers. If you travel during shoulder or off-season, you will have the opportunity to witness a different, much quieter city. For those who are planning a peaceful retreat to Nainital, we recommend visiting from December to March. The serenity and almost empty tourist attractions will allow you to explore Nainital according to your comfort. One can also combine a visit to Nainital with a trip to Bhimtal, Naukuchiatal and Sattal. In fact, this is one of the best ways to explore the region and you can easily spend up to one week here. While boating is unarguably the best thing to try in Nainital, we also suggest trekking, nature walks and of course, a fulfilling food tour. Naini Lake which is situated in the midst of town is a mesmerising sight and boating here is unmissable. Surrounded by the market on one side and craggy mountains on the other, Naini Lake is a treat for the eyes. It's almost surprising to see the contrasting views of the lake in the midst of bustling streets. Naini Lake, Naina Devi Temple, Eco Cave Gardens, Tiffin Top and Snow View Point are the best places to visit in Nainital. For shopping enthusiasts, the busy Tibetan Market and Mall Road are perfect for souvenir shopping. Don't forget to take back handmade candles, woollens and wooden items. Dehradun Dehradun is undoubtedly one of the most well-known destinations in Uttarakhand tourism. The charming Doon Valley and its sister hill station of Mussoorie are perfect getaways for locals as well as tourists. Dehradun is the capital of Uttarakhand and is surrounded by the majestic Garhwal mountains. The city is blessed with pleasant weather throughout the year, making it among the top choices for travellers from across the country. The city has a strong presence of Buddhist culture and one can witness this through the numerous monasteries here. The Mindrolling Monastery is one of the biggest and most important monasteries of the Nyingma School in Tibet and is frequented by travellers. You can easily spend a couple of hours here enjoying the serenity and quiet the monastery offers. Robber's Cave is one of the most popular spots in Dehradun. It is a natural cave and is surrounded by hills and waterfalls. Owing to its popularity, Robber's Cave is almost always crowded. Another equally beautiful and popular place is Sahastradhara (thousand springs) which is around 22kilometres away from the city. The water of the springs is said to have therapeutic and healing properties. Despite the rush of travellers, the valley has a number of unexplored places that are simply breathtaking. Recently the city has also gained popularity in Uttarakhand tourism owing to the numerous cafes which have opened. These cafes not only serve world cuisines but also offer the perfect mountain vibe with wooden interiors and cosy nooks. For shopping enthusiasts, Dehradun's Paltan Bazaar is the place to be. The market has everything you'll need, including artefacts, spices and clothes. The market is generally very crowded but offers great bargains. Mussoorie The hill station of Mussoorie is known for its winding roads, lush green mountains, boutique resorts and the majestic views of the Doon Valley. Mussoorie is one of the most frequented hill stations in Uttarakhand tourism, especially by travellers from the North Indian states of Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana and Delhi. Mussoorie is approximately 35 kilometres or one-and-a-half hours away from Dehradun. The drive itself is a great experience, with winding roads, majestic views of Doon Valley and small tea shops along the way. The hill station was established by the British, owing to its cool climate and beautiful views. Since then it has become one of the most famous hill stations in Uttarakhand tourism, especially for honeymooners. The Mall Road in Mussoorie is full of shops and hawkers selling local goods and local cuisine. The influence of Tibetian culture is clearly visible here, especially in restaurants so you can expect hot momos and steaming thukpa. For adventure seekers, the hill station offers a number of activities such as trekking, paragliding and rafting in Dhauliganga and Alaknanda rivers. There are a number of spots close to Mussoorie that are a must-visit for travellers and a big part of Uttarakhand tourism. The most famous among them are Lal Tibba, Kempty Falls, Gun Hill and Benog Wildlife Sanctuary. Badrinath One of the most important tourist attractions in Uttarakhand tourism, Badrinath is a holy town which attracts visitors from across the country. Situated near the Alaknanda River and between Nar and Narayan mountain ranges, the city is most popular for the Badrinarayan Temple. A part of the chota Char Dham yatra, Badrinath temple is dedicated to Lord Vishnu. The town is mentioned in most sacred texts and there are many legends surrounding its origin. Surrounded by mesmerising snow-clad Himalayas, the surreal beauty of this small town will captivate you. You must include a visit to the temple which is believed to be established by Adi Shankaracharya. The idol of Lord Vishnu in the temple is made of black stone and it’s said that the statue is self-manifested. The temple is also mentioned in the 108 Divya Desams which are devoted to Lord Vishnu. Besides the idol of Lord Vishnu, the temple is also dedicated to numerous other Hindu deities including Lord Shiva. Below the Badrinath temple is tapt kund or a hot spring which is said to have healing properties. It’s also considered to be the origin of River Alaknanda. Visitors can head here for a dip but it’s recommended to be careful since the area is quite busy. Owing to its religious and mythological importance, Badrinath is a huge attraction for spiritual seekers in Uttarakhand tourism. But, its geographical location has also made it popular among adventure enthusiasts. There are numerous trekking trails that begin from Badrinath and it serves as a base for these tours. Contributing to Uttarakhand tourism, trekking has become a popular activity here. The best time to head to Badrinath is between May and July and September to October. One should avoid visiting during peak monsoons and winters. Kausani If your idea of a holiday is spending time amidst natural beauty, then Kausani is the place for you. A part of offbeat Uttarakhand tourism, the small town is located 51km from Almora. The town doesn’t see too many tourists and this is part of its charm. Visited mostly by adventure enthusiasts owing to the numerous trekking trails, Kausani has gained popularity in Uttarakhand tourism in the last few years. Besides exploring the breathtaking natural beauty, one can head to Anashakti or Mahatma Gandhi Ashram, Baijnath Temple, Kausani Tea Estate and Rudradhari Falls. Anashakti Ashram will give you a glimpse into Mahatma Gandhi’s life when he stayed in the small town for a brief period. Housing books, letters and clothes, the ashram is a guesthouse, research centre and a museum for history lovers. For travellers who are planning to include Kausani in their tour of Uttarakhand tourism, it’s important to know that the town is unlike other cities in the state. There are no big hotels or restaurants to keep you busy. However, if you are looking for a laid-back, peaceful retreat which offers a glimpse into local life, then this is the place for you. We recommend heading here before monsoons begin. You can take a bus or cab from Almora since there isn’t any train connectivity. For those who are interested in local tours of the area, we recommend seeking help from locals. This will not only ensure you have a fulfilling trip but will also give you a chance to explore lesser-known spots of Uttarakhand tourism. Valley of Flowers Situated in Chamoli district, the Valley of Flowers is a beautiful national park which is a big part of Uttarakhand tourism. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the valley is located at the meeting point of Zanskar and Western Himalayas. The valley is also mentioned in ancient texts and is said to be the place from where Lord Hanuman brought the sanjivani booti. Since the Valley of Flowers is bordered by Nepal and Tibet, it’s slightly tricky to reach. The closest main town is Chamoli and one can start the trek from Pulna near Govind Ghat. Typically, the trek takes about eight hours, but the duration will completely depend on your fitness level. Though it’s not a beginner level trek since one needs considerable stamina, it’s perfect for moderate and professional trekkers. Before including Valley of Flowers in your Uttarakhand itinerary, you must make the required bookings. The valley is open from June till October and is closed for the rest of the year owing to heavy snowfall. Unlike the rest of Uttarakhand, the best time to visit the valley is between July and August, in the peak of monsoon. Before July, you won’t find any flowers and might be disappointed. It’s important to remember that camping is prohibited and you will have to plan your return on the same day.

Cuisine And Best Places To Eat

One of the best things about exploring Uttarakhand tourism is the local cuisine. While the cuisine is similar throughout the state, each city offers a different rendition of the same dish. Most of the ingredients used in the local cuisine are grown in the state and you can expect fresh food each time. With influences of the Garhwal and Kumaon regions, the food is cooked slowly over burning charcoal. This retains the nutritional content as well as lends it a smokey flavour. Kafuli which is a spinach preparation, phaanu which is made of pulses, kandalee ka saag, chainsoo and dubuk are some of the popular dishes in the region. While local food is easily available in small restaurants, it’s difficult to find in cafes and well-known restaurant chains. You can try local eating joints in Rishikesh, Bhimtal, Nainital, Kausani and Mukteshwar for a taste of the local cuisine.

Some of the best places to eat in Uttarakhand are:

  • Little Buddha Cafe, Rishikesh
  • Town Table, Dehradun
  • Sakleys, Nainital
  • The Kumaoni Farm Cafe, Bhimtal
  • Cafe Ivy, Mussoorie

Activities And Things To Do In Uttarakhand

Trekking One of the primary contributors to Uttarakhand tourism is adventure activities, especially trekking. The numerous mountain ranges in the state are a dream for enthusiastic trekkers. Offering opportunities for amateurs as well as professionals, some of the best trekking trails in India are located here. Valley of Flowers, Chopta, Har ki Dun, Gangotri - Gaumukh, Rupin Pass and Roopkund are some of the most popular treks in Uttarakhand tourism. Taking place throughout the year, these treks attract travellers from across the world. In fact, some travellers believe that the best way to explore Uttarakhand tourism is by trekking. Besides the natural beauty that you witness, trekking gives one an opportunity to interact with locals. There are several trekking packages for Uttarakhand that one can choose depending on your budget and interests. However, we do recommend thorough planning before booking Uttarakhand tourism packages. River Rafting Another huge contributor to Uttarakhand tourism is river rafting. One of the best places to try your hand at this thrilling activity, Uttarakhand has been a favourite with adventure enthusiasts for decades. While Rishikesh is the go-to city for rafting, cliff jumping and bungee jumping, there are a few other spots which are gradually gaining popularity. One of the biggest reasons Rishikesh is a prime spot for rafting is its proximity to major cities such as Delhi, Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan. Among other places which are great spots for rafting, we recommend Pithoragarh, Ranikhet and Kumaon. With rafting opportunities in River Kosi, River Kali, River Tons, these are the best places to try rafting in Uttarakhand tourism if you have already explored Rishikesh. The best time to try rafting is during summer and winter when the flow of the water is manageable. Rafting is closed during monsoon due to incessant rains. Earlier, camping and rafting were preferred activities in Rishikesh but owing to huge crowds, camping is now restricted in the city. Paragliding Nothing compares to a bird’s eye view of small towns, craggy mountains and countless lakes and ponds. Paragliding is a popular activity in Uttarakhand tourism and if you are planning a trip to the state, this should definitely be a part of your Uttarakhand itinerary. There are numerous places to try paragliding in Uttarakhand tourism but Naukuchiatal undoubtedly offers the best experience. Owing to the popularity of the activity, numerous other towns have also started paragliding. Mussoorie, Rishikesh and Almora are a few other places where you can experience the bliss of flying in the air. Paragliding is completely dependent on the weather and the best time to try this is during summer and winter. As long as the wind is in your favour, you can expect a beautiful experience. A paragliding experience in Uttarakhand will cost you anywhere between Rs.800 to Rs.1400.

How To Travel In Uttarakhand

In an effort to boost Uttarakhand tourism, the state has made efforts to streamline public transport. While this has improved things drastically and has benefitted travellers, there is still a lot to be done. Bus Buses are the easiest way to explore Uttarakhand tourism. However, erratic bus timings create havoc when one is trying to plan a Uttarakhand itinerary. The bus-stops are not permanent, the buses don’t follow a schedule and there isn’t a fixed route. If you are travelling on a budget, we recommend keeping aside some buffer time in case of unexpected delays. Train There is good train connectivity between the cities in Uttarakhand. You can book tickets for inter-city rail travel for those cities which have a railway station. However, we strongly recommend booking all train tickets well in advance. Taxis Uttarakhand has a strong network of roads and you can travel by taxi if you are moving from one city to another. However, this is an expensive means of transport and if you are travelling on a budget, it may not be the most convenient. This is also a good means of transport when you have to travel to cities which have no bus and train connectivity.

Uttarakhand (Hindi: उत्तराखण्ड Uttarākhaṇḍ ), until 2007 known as Uttaranchal , is a stunningly beautiful state in the Himalayan North of India .

Uttarakhand, which is in the Himalayan region, is one of the most picturesque states in the country and has tourist destinations that range from hill stations to popular towns to pilgrim destinations.

The local languages are Kumaoni and Garhwali , but everyone also speaks Hindi . English is not so common, but well-understood and spoken in some parts.

There are many ways to enter Uttarakhand. If you are interested in seeing the Garhwal region you can enter through either Haridwar or Kotdwar. Haridwar is the more popular entrance. For both options there are regular bus and train services available from New Delhi. Entry in Kumaon is through Ramnagar, Haldwani or Tanakpur. Major entry points of the state include:

  • If entering from Dehradun , you can head towards Mussoorie , Chakrata , Barkot and Yamunotri .
  • If entering from Haridwar , you can head towards Rishikesh , Tehri , Uttarkashi and Gangotri .
  • If entering from Kotdwar , you can head towards Lansdowne , Satpuli, Pauri, Srinagar, Rudraprayag and Kedarnath .
  • If entering from Ramnagar, you can head towards Ranikhet , Chaukhutia, Karnprayag, Joshimath and Badrinath .
  • If entering from Haldwani, you can head towards Nainital , Almora , Kausani , Bageshwar , Chaukori and Munsyari .
  • If entering from Tanakpur, you can head towards Champawat, Lohaghat, Pithoragarh , Askot, Jauljibi and Dharchula.

Public transport mainly consists of buses and shared jeeps that ply the major north-south pilgrimage routes during the day. Travelling between or away from these routes may require a long wait, hitchhiking, or hiring a private vehicle. In the higher mountains, most drivers are friendly and will take extra passengers if they have empty seats, often in exchange for a small payment (similar to the bus fare).

Rockfalls are frequent during monsoon season, and can delay travel for several hours. The main north-south routes are also the main access points for the Indian Army to its border with China, so rockfalls tend to be cleared quickly (i.e. within the same day) on these roads. Rockfalls on minor roads may stop traffic for days or sometimes even weeks.

Uttarakhand is an increasingly popular destination for motorcycling and cycling, and walking is an option in pilgrimage season, when thousands of pilgrims walk the major pilgrimage routes.

Private taxis and jeeps are available in most towns.

Nainital , Mussoorie and Ranikhet though it's better to treat these slightly overcrowded, touristy 'hill stations' as base camps to explore lots of other hidden jewels further afield in Uttarakhand. In Garhwal , Pauri and Gwaldam there are very peaceful & scenic places. In the Kumaon region, if you are near Almora and want to stay in a secluded area, try Peora or Mukteshwar .

Uttarakhand has high excise taxes on beer and alcohol: a bottle of beer can cost ₹150-₹250, nearly double the price of some other states in India. Quite a few holy towns including Haridwar and Rishikesh are officially dry. Cannabis is illegal, but widely used anyway.

The roads are a bit tricky, and taxi rides in the hills may appear dangerous, but otherwise Uttarakhand is a pretty safe place for tourists. However, tourists are known to encounter problems in the urban centres and the plains districts such as Haridwar.

One may take up one of the trekking tours to have a walk in Chopta, Tungnath, Deoria Taal and Chandrasheela. Or, simply dive into the natural garden of Buransh - a destination considered to be the Switzerland of India.
