Orcas can be seen in the San Juan's all yea r, and are the most frequently seen whales on all of our tours.
Humpback and Gray Whales migrate through the Salish Sea on their journey between colder feeding areas in the north in summer and warmer breeding areas in the south in winter.
Minke Whales can be seen here year round.
Kayak Tours
Kayak Tours are fun for everyone from beginners to experts in our stable two-person kayaks with all the necessary gear and a professional guide.
Our Point Doughty Tour leaves from the North end of Orcas Island. No kayak experience is required for this tour and our guides will assist with gear adjustment and basic instruction. We spend about three hours on the water visiting rugged Point Doughty State Park where we commonly see harbor seals, porpoises, sea stars, and bald eagles.
For more experienced paddlers we offer a full day tour of Sucia Island checking in at 9:00 AM where you will be transported to the island on a high-speed powerboat and enjoy a leisurely paddle of this state park. This remote uninhabited state park island is the gem of the San Juans, full of coves and beaches and known for fossils and abundant wildlife. Pack a picnic lunch and water for your excursion that returns to Orcas Island around 5:00 PM

No trip to Washington is complete without a whale watch and Outer Islands Excursions is a great choice. Capt Jim, and naturalists Delaney and Sophia were friendly, accommodating and knowledgeable hosts. We saw Orcas, a humpback, seals, sea lions, porpoises and eagles. The boat was a perfect size with both inside and outside viewing opportunities. Such a perfect way to experience the natural beauty of the San Juans.

Whale Watching in Bellingham
A first timer’s guide.
Bellingham is known as the place where the mountains meet the sea. A place that hosts biking and hiking high in the mountains and kayaking, paddle boarding, and fantastic boating in Bellingham Bay. It is also a premium spot to do some whale-watching!
There are few better places in the country to try your luck at whale watching. From the diverse array of species to spot, the ease of hiring a private charter, and the wide variety of boat tours—you’ll find whale watching in Bellingham a breeze.
The area boasts pods of killer whales weaving through a patchwork of islands, migrating humpbacks breaching like aquatic acrobats, and glimpses of the whiskered friendly faces of Pacific harbor seals. Whether you’re a seasoned whale enthusiast or just hoping for a first-time sighting — here’s what you need to know about catching the gentle beasts of the sea while staying at one of our Bellingham vacation rentals !
The Best Season for Spotting Whales Around Bellingham
The whale watching season is typically Spring through Fall . The peak time to maximize your chances of seeing these gentle giants is during the month of May. The weather is good, the fish species they feed on are spawning, and Humpbacks are on their journey north toward Alaska.
While it’s still possible to see whales outside of these months, the spawning of anchovies and smelt brings whales closer to shore and out of deeper waters.
First-Timer’s Tips for Whale Watching in Bellingham
1. manage your expectations..
Whale watching can be a tricky endeavor. As with any wild animal, there are no guarantees. The vastness of their range makes spotting a whale even more difficult. Most reputable whale-watching companies have knowledge of popular feeding grounds and hot spots, but it’s important to accept that you may not get lucky the first time.
2. Disappointment Discounts!
Some operators offer discounts on return journeys if you want to try your whale luck again. Be sure to check your company’s policy in advance.
3. Choose Your Whale Season Wisely.
Choose the right season but understand that good weather is no guarantee. Although there are ideal seasons for whale sighting weather (May + the summer months), the Puget Sound area can be on the moist side during the Spring and Fall. Be prepared with warm gear because it gets even colder out on the water.
4. Don’t forget the sun hats and sunscreen!
The outer decks have little protection, and you’ll want to spend much time searching for whales. Being on the water intensifies the effects of the sun. Polarized sunglasses and high SPF are a good idea for those sunny days.
5. Binoculars are a good idea.
Binoculars are usually available for rent if you don’t have your own. If you have a camera with a telephoto lens, be sure to be at the ready for photos. Whales usually appear when you least expect it. But also be sure to take time away from the lenses and binos and enjoy the scenery around you. Sometimes looking out on the expansive horizon of the sea can be the trick to spotting a fin or blow.
6. Be prepared for choppy waters.
If you’re prone to seasickness, it’s best to bring some preventative medications in case of rough seas.
7. Talk with and listen to your guides.
They are very knowledgeable and can answer any questions about the wildlife you’re encountering. You will come away with a deeper understanding of the surrounding ecosystems, diverse wildlife, and the importance of whale conservation.
8. Bring your patience.
Any tour operator will tell you how often the whales make their grand appearance at the end of the trip as if leaving the maximum amount of anticipation possible. You’re out here to witness animals in their natural habitats, and while guides can’t always control when we see them in the wild, which makes a sighting so remarkable!
What Kind of Whales Will You Spot?
The cold waters of the Pacific Northwest are a haven for various whale species. Some live in our waters year-round, and some simply migrate through. The good news is that you can expect to see different whale species year-round in the waters of Bellingham Bay and beyond.
Biggs Transient Orcas (Year-round residents)
These orcas or “killer whales” have been sighted more frequently than the Southern Residents, roaming through the San Juan Channel and Haro Strait, but occasionally, they have been spotted in the bay near Bellingham.
Southern Resident Orcas (Year-round residents)
The J pod is most consistently spotted in the Salish Sea. This pod comprises 24 whales and is often studied and can be seen year-round in this area.
Humpback Whales (April/May)
Humpbacks are a migratory species in the Baleen family. In late spring and fall, these whales can be spotted making their way to and from the Alaskan waters they feed in during the summer months.
Gray Whales (March-May)
These whales hold the record for the largest migration range. In these spring months, you can find them moving north for warmers waters to breed and feed.
Fun fact: Some of these endangered whales are even found to live year-round on the northeastern edges of the Olympic Peninsula.
Minke Whales (Year-Round/Summer)
The Minke is technically a whale that can be spotted year-round if you’re lucky, but you’re most likely to spot these notoriously elusive whales in the summer months. They are known to roam around the Salish Sea, feeding on their favorite food, bait fish.
The Bellingham region is also famous for its bald eagle sightings as well as its adorable harbor seals and porpoises. Keep a sharp eye out; you might see more than whales on your whale-watching trip!
The Best Whale Tours Around Bellingham
Four stand-out whale-watching cruises offer group charters and private charters on half-day and full-day tours, depending on your zeal to hit the open water. Keep in mind the point of departure for planning your trip!
Spirit of Orca Whale Watching & Wildlife Private Tours
Spirit of Orca is a highly rated agency out of Anacortes that practices a guaranteed ethical approach to whale watching and wildlife. They offer private tours as well as photography tours. This is a great option if you’re looking for a more intimate tour instead of being on a large boat packed with fellow watchers.
Maya’s Legacy Whale Watching
Maya’s Legacy is a family-run agency specializing in small group tours and intimate encounters with wildlife while upholding ethical practices and focusing on conservation and research. Knowledgeable guides, small groups, and an array of tour options make them ideal for those looking for unique and up-close experiences with the Northwest’s most prized wildlife.
San Juan Cruises
SJC operates out of the Bellingham Cruise Terminal near downtown Fairhaven. They offer a Whale Watching Lunch Tour through the scenic San Juan Islands that includes a meal aboard as well as the best chances to see whales, sea lions, eagles, and porpoises.
They also offer a locally famous Chuckanut Cracked Crab Dinner Cruise and a Friday Harbor cruise with a full bar. While the latter options aren’t technically focused on spotting whales, they do float through whale waters, and there’s always a chance you’ll spot one!
Outer Island Expeditions
The Blackfish Tours with Outer Island Expeditions depart from Anacortes with 3-4 hour tours complete with trained naturalists on board. This is a great whale-watching adventure for the whole family. Snacks are provided, and they can accommodate groups of 1-100 people!
No Tour, No Problem
If you’re planning on visiting Bellingham or Seattle during the wintertime months when whale-watching cruises are limited, you can always head to Washington Park in Anacortes, Chuckanut Drive, and very occasionally Bellingham Bay itself to check for the tell-tale water spouts and whale tails.
Get Your Whale Watch On in Bellingham
The Pacific Northwest is one of the best and most underrated places to spot whales in the United States and one of the few places where they can be seen year-round. If you consider these tips and tricks when planning your trip, you’re sure to spot one of the elusive undersea creatures on your next stay at a Luxury Getaways vacation home!

We went out we'll watching with Captain Drew Brooke and Dana and they were an outstanding crew. Plenty of interaction with the guests answering any questions. Made sure that we saw wildlife on land and aquatic wildlife. The boat was big and comfy and there was plenty of room upstairs or downstairs depending on your preference. We saw two orcas which they identified as part of a transient pod and kind of gave a backstory of how they're helping researchers with pictures and sightings because they can be another set of eyes out in nature.
Where to start... 1. The boat was filthy! We were on the Blackfish III and there was garbage left behind from the prior tour. 2. The bathroom door was stuck and needed to be greased. Quite a few people needed a second hand to just open the door. On top of that it was dirty and it appears that they installed a Purell dispenser probably when the boat was new but never bothered to refill it. 3. They fell way short of the 4-5 hours advertised. We were picked up on Lummi Island and spend 30 min going back to Orcas Island. We were told that we would be picking up crew but we ended up waiting around for an hour for more people. That's 1:30 hours down plus the tour ended an hour early. When you also add the 30-45 minutes the boat is zooming past the other islands without slowing down to take a look at the wildlife (or any explanation what it is that you're seeing) that's 3 hours of wasted time. So far, everything is understandable: hey, we're not expecting 5-star accommodations--we were "camping" after all. No Purell and an un-greased door? who cares. Waiting for more passengers? It's a business. So far they are at 4.5 stars. So where do they lose the other 3.5 stars? on customer service! While waiting on Orcas Island for more passengers the owner/manager came on to the boat and sat down on a bench containing a bag of a fellow passenger. That passenger didn't know this person was the owner (you--owner/manager were wearing shorts, a blue shirt with white checkers and a baseball cap) and thought he was with a group. She asked if he wanted to sit there and if so she could move her stuff. He (operator/manager) responded with a rude "Why don't you just wait and I'll be out of here in a few minutes". The passenger was left awkwardly standing there, with nowhere to go so she decided to get here phone; she asked the owner if she could just grab her phone and this guy menacingly showed his finger in her face and yelled "I thought I told you to wait"!!! OMG, we could not believe it! We all sat there thinking we have a volatile, emotionally disturbed person on the boat! He then gets up, said some words to the crew and left the boat to load another boat. That's when we learned that he was the tour operator!!!! The boat left and there was silence for about 45 minutes. No one spoke to others in cabin. The mood was so tense and everyone was on edge. It wasn't until the tour was underway that the other passengers started talking (and were in disbelief that the unhinged person on the boat earlier was the tour operator). It was the topic of conversation for a good hour--and again after we spotted him when the boat returned to shore (speaking to the crew of another boat). In defense of the staff on our boat, they were absolutely pleasant. The captain was a gentleman. You could see in their faces that they didn't want to get involved and are probably used to the volatile nature of their boss. Even someone like me who comes from NYC the proprietor/manager of this company came off as a hot-headed thug! He is one person who should clearly stay away from the customer service side of the business.
This was an amazing whale watching tour on Outer Island Excursions. We had a once in a lifetime experience up close with a killer whale. Our tour guide Lindsey R. And captain were amazing, well worth it. We were on the Blackfin 2.
Worth every penny! My family went on a whale watching tour last weekend and really enjoyed our experience. We saw at least 4 different Orcas, several herons, many jellyfish, a few bald eagles, loads of crabs, and countless seals. The boat itself was quiet when we were idling, no unpleasant fumes from the engines, there was a bathroom on board (I didn't have to use it, but I was glad it was available). There was a cabin if you wanted respite from the wind/spray. There's an upper level (only fits 10 people at a time), but that was a nice option when one side of the boat was full of people looking at Orcas. The two men working on the boat had a lot of information about the wildlife, the islands, and were really friendly and open to questions. I don't know if our group was unusually small, but we saw other tour boats that looked totally jam packed wth people which didn't seem as conducive to everyone getting a good look at the whales.

In the shadow of snow-capped Mount Baker, Bellingham is a northern launching point for a wildlife adventure on the Salish Sea. Departing from the downtown waterfront, or picturesque Fairhaven Cruise Terminal, whale-watching boats cruise out to view family groups of the resident salmon-eating killer whales and solitary minke whales. From time to time, nomadic mammal-eating orcas will also pass through the area, as well as gray and humpback whales taking a scenic side trip during their coastal migration. Dall’s and harbor porpoises play in the currents where the straits of this inland sea converge, and the rocky reefs and shorelines are home to a large population of harbor seals. Huge Steller’s sea lions spend part of their summers here, feasting on salmon.
Rhinoceros auklets, murres, pigeon guillemots and cormorants summer here, and sometimes shy tufted puffins are spotted too. Over it all soar bald eagles, occurring here in numbers second only to Alaska.

Meet the Most Comfortable Boat in the Area
Island explorer 5 was built specifically built for whale watching..
Our goal is to show you as many whales as possible, and with the Island Explorer 5 , we do that better than any other company. To ensure comfort and quality, we don't book our vessels to full capacity. Every passenger has unobstructed front-row viewing. You won't be stuck inside looking through glass or forced to stand behind other guests.
Due to the design and stability of our vessel, we don’t force you to to sit down while we’re underway. Grab a hot cup of chili or a cold local brew while moving freely around our fully walk-around viewing decks. When you’d like to sit, however, we have plenty of options for everyone. The Island Explorer 5 has comfortable indoor heated cabins and outdoor, wind-protected areas with padded seating. No other vessel comes close to the comfort of the Island Explorer 5 .
Some of the features that set us apart from the pack are things you’ll never see. Our vessel is equipped with large, low-noise propellers and above-water exhaust to create a quieter experience for the whales. While watching whales, our vessel make less noise than the ambient sound of rain hitting the surface. We’ve modernized our boat by investing in equipment that not only meets but exceeds current emissions standards.
Island Explorer 5
Whale guarantee, we guarantee whales on every whale watching tour..
If you do not see a whale (orca, minke, gray, or humpback) with us, you can come again for 50% off your next tour. It’s that simple.
- Species Covered: Bigg's killer whales, Southern Resident killer whales, humpback, minke, and/or gray whales
- Date Range: Year-Round
- Sighting Success Rate: Over 97% since 1996. Our Whale Report shows a detailed account of every tour. We rarely miss!
Where do we see whales?
We've integrated SPOT satellite technology to upload the precise GPS coordinates of the day's sightings to an interactive map on our website. As you'll see from the map, whales don't live in one spot. In fact, whales travel more than 100 miles in a 24 hour period! The Island Explorer 5 has the largest range in the area with the highest whale sighting success rate. It's a common misconception that small boats get closer to whales. Each vessel – regardless of size – is required to adhere to state and federal whale viewing laws. Large boats offer more stability, comfort, and added amenities (real bathrooms, onboard cafés, and much more). Our spacious vessel with multiple viewing decks offer an unparalleled photography platform that small boats simply cannot offer.
Our daily Whale Report is the most comprehensive record of whale sightings by a whale watch company in the industry. Every day, our professional naturalists record an account of the day and upload images. Check it out –– the Whale Report dates back to 2003!
