Boeing is Missouri’s leading aerospace company that has shown its presence in the area for more than 80 years. Boeing’s St. Louis facilities are primarily based on defense work, including the manufacturing and assembly of fighter jets, unmanned aerial tankers, and supersonic training aircraft for specialized missions. Simple Flying explores some major aspects of Boeing’s presence in St. Louis.

1 Multiple fighter jet programs

Boeing st. louis produces various current-generation fighter jets.

  • The facility produces the F-15 fighter jets
  • The facility produces F/A-18 Super Hornet jets
  • Boeing St. Louis has the second-largest workforce of 60,200 people, behind Boeing Washington
  • The company plans to wind down production of existing jets in the coming years to focus on next-generation fighter jets

The operations at Boeing’s St. Louis are largely defense-related products. The company has F-15 and F/A-18 Super Hornet assembly lines in the St. Louis area. The company aims to slowly phase out the production of existing jets to focus on next-generation fighters.

The Indian Navy is one of the largest customers of the F/A-18 jets. A renewed order from the Indian Navy may extend the production of the jets into 2027.

2 Boeing T-7 Red Hawk

The aircraft is in the testing phase.

In collaboration with the Swedish Aerospace Company, Saab, Boeing is working on producing an advanced supersonic jet trainer, the T-7 Red Hawk . Various sections of the aircraft come together at Boeing’s St. Louis facility, including fins, wings, and tail assembly.

Boeing’s T-7 Red Hawk: An Advanced Military Jet Trainer

Boeing aims to sell over 2,700 Red Hawks globally.

The single-engine training aircraft has recently completed multiple tests. According to the Chief Test Pilot of Boeing’s T-7 aircraft, Steve Schmidt,

“The flight controls and commands to the fly-by-wire system were crisp and the aircraft maneuvered exceptionally well. Everything operated as designed and expected.”

The vice president of the T-7 program commented,

“Our priorities are developing this advanced trainer and getting it to future fighter and bomber pilots. This test brings us one step closer to the T-7A Red Hawk taking to the skies.”

3 Boeing MQ-25 Stingray

The Boeing MQ-25 Stingray is an aerial refueling drone built at the company’s St. Louis facility. With the new drone, Boeing aims to extend the combat range of various existing fighter jets, including the F/A-18 Super Hornet, Lockheed Martin F-35C, and Boeing EA-18G Growler jets.

The aircraft took its first flight in 2019 before the company conducted numerous tests on the aircraft. According to Boeing,

“The MQ-25 brings the right combination of refueling, autonomy, and seamless carrier deck integration to meet the U.S. Navy's goals.”

With its versatility, the aircraft is capable of performing a wide range of refueling missions of an aerial tanker.

4 Phantom Works Unit

A new facility for the next generation fighter jets.

Boeing is opening three new facilities in St. Louis, including an assembly building, a post-assembly center, and a specialized laboratory and testing center. The company aims to build the next generation of fighter jets. The major expansion project will cost $1.8 billion and create more than 500 new jobs.

After the new facility is up and running, Boeing will support more than 16,000 jobs in the greater St. Louis area through its work on autonomous vehicles and space and communication systems. Earlier this month, the Governor of Missouri, Mike Parson, expressed his excitement about Boeing’s expansion plan by stating,

“We’re proud that Boeing, our state’s top manufacturer and a global leader in aerospace, is considering St. Louis County as the site of such a significant investment. This company’s 80-year presence in the community is a testament to Missouri’s superior business climate and skilled workforce. We’re confident our state is the ideal location for Boeing’s next-generation expansion project and look forward to supporting the company as it finalizes its decision.”

5 Student Learning Programs

Boeing provides various programs for school students.

Boeing provides two major student programs for school-going children. The Mystery of Flight program is designed for fourth-grade and above students who learn the basics of flight through a 90-minute multimedia presentation. The interactive program shows the components of flight, aircraft design basics, and underlying theories of flying.

Another program is the Adventures in Space designed for seventh-grade and above students who learn the history of humankind in space and the future of space exploration. The program is aided by a 60-minute multimedia presentation, showing the principles of rockets and spacecraft, the constraints of space flights, and the basics of the International Space Station.

Both programs also provide a guided tour of the Prologue Room where lessons on flight are done. Students also see space capsules and a large-scale Sky Lab within the Prologue Room. Students also collect take-home souvenirs and activity books for continuous learning and reflection.

If you like planes and you like history, this is the place for you. Learn about Boeing's products, see the history, and enjoy fun facts. Did you know Marilyn Monroe was a Boeing employee?

This is a great free museum that nobody seems to be talking about! It's perfect for fans of space and aviation. Not a huge museum but they pack a lot into a small space. It's very clean, and air conditioning is always a bonus in the summer. Hours vary, so I'd call ahead and make sure it's open.

Lots to see! Expect to spend 20-45 minutes here, depending on how much you want to learn and explore.

Pretty cool if you're into planes and would like to know more about St. Louis aviation history. I do have to gripe a little bit that some setup looks a little haphazard as they tried to squeeze in all the Boeing stuff.. I would like to be the first non-Boeing employee review this place... but I can't really say that because... the times I've been there I've been there as a Boeing employee.... damnit! Anyway it's free. Get to know more about the 2nd largest employer (~16k people) in the area and likely the largest manufacturer in the area as well (post Auto plant exits)? Very few people know that Boeing Defense, Space & Security is headquartered here, let alone that the F-18/F-15 final assemblies are here as well. I've attended quite a few little events here as well and I actually don't know if that sort of thing is open to the public, but it's worth a shot.

Photo of Terry A.

I was only in the area for a few days and the Prologueroom was one of the places I was able to go. A hidden gem of St. Louis!

Photo of Alex B.

This place is a real hidden gem. It's a relatively small museum but it is packed with cool stuff. If you are in St. Louis and near the airport, this is definitely worth an hour or so. It's like the Smithsonian Air & Space Museum Lite. If you have kids that are at all interested in aerospace science (or you want them to be), bring them here. You won't regret it!

Photo of Sandy M.

For aviation fans, this is a fun and free piece of history. It's not a huge place and they have limited hours so definitely call ahead and set up a tour. Promotional materials such as posters and cards are usually free and sitting out in the lobby for you to take home.

Photo of Andrew K.

I agree with my boy Drew P. here. We get to see it all the time since we work at the company however, if you are a person who thinks planes are cool and have any interest in the history of aviation, this is the place to go in St. Louis. If you aren't into aviation or history this place would probably wouldn't be as exciting to you(both myself and Drew are prior Air Force/Navy so it's in our bones) You can't beat free.

Meet Elinor Otto

At 93, this Rosie is still riveting

Elinor Otto picked up a riveting gun in World War II, joining the wave of women taking what had been men’s jobs. These days she’s building the C-17.

Just another day at the office for a 93-year-old “Rosie the Riveter” who stepped into a San Diego County factory in 1942 — and is still working on the assembly line today.

Otto is something of a legend among her co-workers on the state’s last large military aircraft production line. And her legend is growing: She was recently honored when Long Beach opened Rosie the Riveter Park next to the site of the former Douglas Aircraft Co. plant, where women worked during World War II.

“She’s an inspiration,” says Craig Ryba, another structural mechanic. “She just enjoys working and enjoys life.”

Making a Difference

I’ve got a great idea.

Meet a Boeing engineer who’s discovered she has a knack for inventing, thanks to colleagues who have mentored her.

Screen Shot 2015-05-19 at 1.41.28 PM

Not long after Angela Li started at Boeing as a college intern five years ago, she was bitten by the invention bug.

With opportunities, such as Boeing’s Engineering Career Foundation Program, offered to her after her graduation, Li knew that technical development opportunities were abundant and out there for employees. So, when she joined full-time, she went looking for them.

Now an avionics design engineer for Boeing Commercial Airplanes, Li found such an opportunity in mentors who taught her the creative craft of innovation.

“Angela was great to mentor because she wasn’t just willing to learn, she was eager, and she had good ideas,” said Wayne Howe, a Boeing Technical Fellow, one of Li’s co-inventors on pending Boeing patents.

Working one-on-one and through Invention Workshops, the Technical Fellows inspire and coach other technical team members on turning their ideas into actual innovation. Workshops, which are half-day seminars that begin with group lessons, put learners together with Technical Fellows or patent consultants. The pairs then work through an idea.

“People often think that you have to be a rocket scientist to invent something here, but that’s not the case,” Tillotson said, adding that mentoring can lead to a treasure trove of ideas because mentored colleagues can offer fresh ideas and different ways of thinking.

Li said that she understands that it doesn’t take an Edison or Einstein to make valuable contributions to Boeing’s innovation.

Boeing Phantom Swift Selected for DARPA X-Plane Competition

Innovative design features fans in fuselage and wingtips to aid lift and control

Phantom Swift, a prototype Boeing initially built in less than a month, has been accepted to be part of the Defense Advanced Research Project Agency (DARPA) Vertical Takeoff and Landing (VTOL) X-plane program. DARPA is trying to mature a new aircraft configuration capable of both efficient hover and high-speed cruise. The design is a product of St. Louis-based Boeing Defense, Space & Security.

“Proving these capabilities in a single aircraft has been the holy grail for tactical military aviation,” said Dan Newman, Boeing Phantom Works Advanced Vertical Lift capture team lead. “We’re confident that Phantom Swift could be the solution.”

Phantom Swift features two large lift fans – inside the fuselage – that provide efficient vertical lift. Once the aircraft transitions to cruise mode, the fans are covered. It also features smaller ducted fans on the wingtips that provide forward thrust, and provide additional lift and control in hover.

Go behind the scenes at boeing: factory tours are back.

Boeing's Everett factory, renowned as the largest building in the world by volume, once again opened its doors to the public on October 5

by Enrique Perrella

November 1, 2023

After a lengthy hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Boeing Factory Tours are back, offering aviation enthusiasts and curious minds a chance to witness the magic of aircraft production.

For years, the Boeing Factory Tour has been a sought-after experience, attracting more than six million visitors from around the globe since its inception in 1968. The tour provides a glimpse into the fascinating world of aviation, with a behind-the-scenes look at the assembly line of iconic Boeing aircraft, which included the 747, 767, 777, and 787 Dreamliner.

Christi Medlyn, Boeing Future of Flight general manager, shared the excitement surrounding the reopening with Business Traveler USA .

“We’ve been closed for the tour portion of the experience for three and a half years. In the meantime, we invested in this space to give people a great brand experience for Boeing. It’s not just about airplane manufacturing; it’s about the full enterprise,” she explained.

A Renewed Factory Tour

Boeing’s Future of Flight location has undergone a transformation over the past few years to complement the factory tour. It now offers an immersive experience that covers various aspects of Boeing’s operations, including sustainable fuels, autonomous flight, and satellite technology.

In addition, hands-on activities and STEM learning opportunities have been introduced, allowing visitors to engage with drones and robots.

boeing tour st louis

Visitors will notice several enhancements to the Boeing Factory Tour experience. The new route through the factory offers a unique perspective, taking guests from the Boeing Future of Flight Museum to the massive Everett factory, where tens of thousands of employees support airplane production.

The tour also includes access to the site’s underground system of factory tunnels and an observation balcony providing an exclusive, sweeping view of the current 777 assembly line where Boeing’s future flagship, the 777X, will also be manufactured. Lufthansa and Emirates are the first two airlines expecting to take delivery of the new variant of the Triple Seven.

Furthermore, visitors are treated to a comfortable bus tour that takes them through various sections of the airport tarmac. The journey starts from the area where new planes are fueled for the first time and continues to where Boeing 737 fuselages arrive on train wagons from Wichita, Kansas.

Sometimes, brand-new Boeing 777s without engines can be spotted, and other rare planes like Boeing 767 military tankers can be seen as they are prepared for delivery. During every portion of the tour, a knowledgeable guide provides detailed explanations of every aspect and responds to any questions from curious visitors.

boeing tour st louis

However, the tour isn’t the only attraction. Boeing Future of Flight features the Boeing Gallery, showcasing nearly 150 past, current, and future Boeing products and services, including the intriguing Passenger Air Vehicle (PAV) or personal flying car.

The Above and Beyond exhibit offers immersive simulations, and visitors can snap selfies with the Destiny Module from the International Space Station.

boeing tour st louis

The open-air Sky Deck provides breathtaking views of Paine Field, the factory, and the enchanting North Cascade Mountains in the distance. It’s not unusual to spot brand-new planes parked on the deck, preparing for their journey into the skies.

And for those looking to take home a piece of aviation memorabilia, the Boeing store offers a wide range of souvenirs, from sweatshirts to scale model jets, coffee mugs, and vintage Boeing pilot jackets for kids and adults.

Overwhelming Response

The reopening of the Boeing Factory Tours has been met with overwhelming demand. Visitors have expressed their excitement and appreciation for the improved experience.

“It has been overwhelmingly positive, as we have been sold out every day. The pent-up demand and excitement around our product has been contagious. We are pleased with the positive visitor reviews received so far,” Christi Medlyn said.

“We’ve invested in every aspect of the experience, from the script to the exhibit content. We’ve added new elements and updated the storytelling.”

boeing tour st louis

“Even though the experience is a bit different from the last time, we have made significant investments in every aspect. You will see the difference even while walking down the booth hallways,” Medlyn added.

Focus on the Boeing 777

While the tour has shifted its focus from the 747 to the 777 experience, it continues to captivate visitors, old and new, with its rich history and innovations in the world of aviation.

With the entire assembly line for the 787 Dreamliner now operational at Boeing’s South Carolina plant, the facility at Paine Field is exclusively dedicated to the Triple Seven family of planes. This includes the present 777 Freighter, along with the new 777X, along with the occasional 767 Freighter.

“After the 747 and the 787 were no longer being manufactured in Paine Field, we had to alter our route,” Medlyn explained. “As a result, we are now focusing on improving the 777 experience while incorporating new elements that highlight the entire family of Boeing Commercial Airplanes. We aim to discuss sustainability and introduce fresh perspectives to our storytelling.”

“So, we looked at everything from the script to the exhibit content. We added a little bit of Boeing history that you’ll see in the theater experience through a video at the beginning of the tour.”

boeing tour st louis

Whether you’re a seasoned aviation enthusiast or just curious about the marvels of flight, the Boeing Factory Tours are ready to deliver an unforgettable experience you’ll be eager to share with your friends for months to come.

So, mark your calendars, aviation fans, because this is a rare opportunity to step inside the world of Boeing, where dreams of flight become reality. The Everett factory, Boeing’s crown jewel, is ready to inspire and educate once again.

Business | Boeing to build new ‘Phantom Works’ facility in St. Louis for future military aircraft

The Future of Flight Boeing Factory tour.

Phantom Works is the research, development and prototyping division of Boeing’s defense unit. The new building is in addition to the company’s existing Phantom Works site in St. Louis County, and will be located adjacent to it. It is expected to be operational in 2025.

Most of the work at Phantom Works is classified, said Steve Nordlund, senior site executive for Boeing St. Louis.

The company added a new advanced composite fabrication center in Mesa, Arizona, last year, and opened a lab and test facility in the St. Louis area over the winter.

“We’re not done,” Nordlund said Thursday. “We’re on a steady diet of investments.”

Nordlund previously served as general manager of Phantom Works. Nordlund said in February that Boeing’s recent, local hiring has had an emphasis on engineers, a sign that the company is looking toward its future products.

Boeing has about 15,800 employees in the St. Louis area, its second-largest workforce after Washington state. The St. Louis operations are mostly focused on defense products like the F-18 and F-15 fighter jets, the T-7A trainer plane and the MQ-25 refueling drone.

Earlier this year the company revealed plans to end new-build production of the F/A-18 Super Hornet in 2025. The aging fighter jet line had been on a trajectory to wind down for years, but the February announcement was the first publicly disclosed timeline. Production could be extended into 2027 if Boeing received more orders from the Indian Navy.

Technical groups, follow aiche, tour of boeing prologue room.

The St Louis Section AIChE December meeting will feature a private (after hours) tour of the James S. McDonnell Prologue Room.  The James S. McDonnell Prologue Room in St. Louis tells the panoramic story of a century of aviation progress from bi-planes to space travel.  Scale models, paintings, and photographs document this history from The Boeing Company perspective.   The men and women of The Boeing Company and the aircraft they have built have played a pivotal role in shaping the history of aerospace.  They have advanced technology, changed travel, defended our freedoms, and discovered new frontiers.   The nearly 100 year history of The Boeing Company, along with the companies with which it shares a common heritage, parallels the exciting history of humankind’s endeavor to fly.

Separate displays depict the evolution of technology through hundreds of varying scale commercial and military airplane models, full size missiles, and full-size and smaller scale rockets and spacecraft.  Actual-size mockups of the Mercury and Gemini capsules that carried the first Americans into space dramatize the vital role the company played in the early days of America’s space program.  Detailed models of Skylab, the world’s first orbiting laboratory, and today’s orbiting lab, the International Space Station, are also on display.  The James S. McDonnell Prologue Room has fighter jet, helicopter, and transport scaled models that document the military aircraft developments through the years.  Models of Boeing’s commercial aircraft product lines including the new 787 are also on display.  Don’t miss this opportunity to explore the history of flight.  Attendance is limited to the first 40 people to RSVP.

Contact John Waldrop at 314-232-5336 or  [email protected] .  Tour will be from 5:30 to 6:30 with dinner at 7:00 at Bandana's BBQ, 10800 Airport Road, St. Ann, MO 314-426-9955.

St. Louis Boeing employees tour 777-X they helped build

BERKELEY, Mo.—On it’s way back to its headquarters in the state of Washington following last week’s appearance at the Paris Air Show, a Boeing 777-9 landed at St. Louis Lambert International airport Sunday and on Monday, played host to St. Louis-based employees who helped build it.

boeing tour st louis

The 777-9, which has been in production since 2014, but won’t be delivered until 2025, is the only current commercial airplane built with St. Louis-made parts. The manufacturer’s defense unit here produces several military aircraft.

St. Louis-based employees build the 777-9’s folding wing tip and moveable elements on the plane’s tail for more than 500 composite parts for the plane, the largest amount the St. Louis facility has produced.

A company spokesman couldn’t confirm the exact number of St. Louis jobs connected specifically to the 777-9 because some of the work crosses over to the defense side as well.

“Folding wings tips are fantastic. There’s a whole lot of discussion about them but they work great. When they’re folded, the airplane fits into the same gate and taxiways as a legacy triple 7,” said Ted Grady, the Chief pilot. “They’ve been really reliable, really safe not really had issues with them.”

The plane which landed here is one of four test models the company has used since flights began in 2020. Grady described the one here now as the “workhorse”.

Employees were walking around and through the plane taking photos like tourists. The plane itself is outfitted with testing equipment and storage tanks to mimic weight, which themselves look like a tourist travel log, decorated with reminders of previous voyages, including last week’s trip to Paris.

The 777-9 will carry up to 426 passengers and is large enough to fit the fuselage for a 737 inside.

Boeing has more than 340 orders for the planes, including a deal announced last week in Paris with Air India for 10 of them. On the other end of the spectrum, Emirates Airlines has a deal for 115 planes,  USA Today reported in 2014 . Boeing has other deals with Qatar Airways, Singapore Airlines and Lufthansa.

The first 777-9 was supposed to be delivered in 2020, but there have been delays. The 2025 delivery “reflects an updated assessment of the time required to meet certification requirements. The company has paused production on the planes through 2023 to minimize inventory.

St. Louis Boeing employees helped make the wing components for the 777X test plane. It stopped at St. Louis Lambert International Airport on June 26, 2023.
